Obviously the Falcon show should've shown Bucky coming terms with the fact that he should write his OWN name in his book of victims.

It should have been made visually clear by the end of the series that he doesnt have to apologize for heinous crimes committed by Hydra hijacking his body and obliterating his bodily autonomy to incomprehensible levels, easentially using him like a criminal pump n dump. Every new assignment, new agonizing training, new puppetry, another violent rape of his body and mind.

Bucky is not at all even akin to say Tony Stark, who suffered immense guilt during the entire Infinity Saga regarding his former life as a weapons dealer. Tony's (valid) guilt resulted in a compulsive desire to protect the earth, ultimately ending in his voluntary death. Tony is time and again shown as a tortured hero despite his initial complacency in his morally bereft actions. Bucky gets no such luck- even though Bucky, in his former life, committed no such atrocities and in fact was likely one of the most heroic pre-superhero normals in the MCU.

Bucky was a well-liked, smart, athletic, happy boy who cast aside any manner of social expectation to throw in his lot, time, and energy, again and again, with chronically ill, disabled, social menace Steve Rogers. Bucky canonically nursed Steve's injuries, was his stalwart companion through all life's difficulties (his illnesses, his mother's death, Steve's psychological inferiority complex and mental anguish resulting from his social standing) and the Crash, and mostly importantly, Bucky did not want to go to war.

He was drafted (something that seemingly would have been key to bring up in Falcon re: his lifetime as an unwilling soldier). And, emotionally, Bucky ardently tried to dissuade Steve from joining the army, for fear he'd lose him. Despite not wanting to fight and being tortured, Bucky stayed in the military post-rescue from Azzano because he could not fathom leaving Steve. He planted his feet in a burning building shouting "No! not without you!" refusing to leave without Steve even after his rescue from months of torture. Til the end of the line, regardless of what happened to him.

For the next three entire films we see the frankly epic level of value Steve places on Bucky's devoted companionship. How desperately Steve valued Bucky's goodness and innocence (even above his own life, reputation, and safety).

Bucky doesn't have to cross out names he feels guilty about as if atoning for his own sins - and while the thought behind this narrative choice may have been to depict some semblance of retribution, this notion would have been much better expressed in another way. Such as: members of the public or others who were vicitmized in some horrible manner (domestic abuse, sexual abuse, scapegoats, other victims of Hydra etc) coming to Bucky instead to comfort him, welcoming him into a group designed to alieviate this solitary mental burden, or at least comiserate in some manner. Showing him he was not alone and who, exactly, he could be fighting for should he ever choose to fight again. The voiceless and disregarded, who only have Bucky who understands.

Also (though it seems to have engendered some faction of fandom vitriol), the removal of Bucky's arm during battle deserves consideration. This visual act was obviously narratively intended to show the unmatched prowess of the Dora Milaje and the justifiable premeditated cautiousness of Wakanda re: the generous rehabilitation of a dangerous mass weapon.

Though, it has the double-edged effect of showing how Bucky is still not an agent of his own bodily autonomy. His mental and physical freedom, his very ability to do his job and make his own choices therein, is still under the jurisdiction of someone else. His disability is his opposition's advantage (whether well-intentioned or not). Essentially, he is mistrusted. And it doesn't matter how much therapy he goes to, how much he atones for his "sins", his mind is still considered not to be fully and truly his. This is one of the most injurious of all things Bucky suffers - even those who rehabilitate him doubt the complete success of his healing. Therefore, his entire arc in the series is at best questionable simply with that alone.

His entire arc should clearly have been reframed to display his victimhood, and how the fact that he is mistrusted is also another burden and misfortune that he can work through and call others out for, instead of absorbing the guilt for that too.

Falcon does a poor job of showing how this "Bucky can't be trusted" mindset is highly injurious to his status as a victim, while mostly asserting it is a byproduct of his (alleged) villainy. It does not separate "alleged villainy" and "propensity for villainous actions as result of the abuse his suffered for 70 years". Instead of clarification on this for the viewers and Bucky himself we are, among other things, posed with the question - is the Winter Soldier still in Bucky?

Right there, you know the show was not intended to show much closure for the character, but rather wring-out, refresh, and even retroactively assert his alleged villainy over his victimhood in anticipation of perhaps his own solo series (where the Soldat is reactivated). Yet, we are also oddly simutaneously expected to accept that Bucky is "healing" somehow, although we never witness anything truly happen him, internally, to suggest this.

Bucky plays an almost angry motherly role to Sam at the start of the series, initially chastising him for not accepting responsibility. Bucky sees himself as the protector of Steve's legacy, and is disappointed in Sam's (later he learns, complicated) reluctance to wield the shield.

In the end, Bucky is approving of Sam and proud of his rise to the Cpt America mantle in that same manner - bookended with approval from a distance where he almost, again, stands off to the side as a proud mother. He seems to see himself as a mentor in Sam's journey towards self-actualization. Why is he so happy Sam has become the hero he always was inside?

His newfound friendship and respect for Sam as his own hero, of course. However, it is also his love of Steve which is the next obvious answer, his deep pride in who Steve was and what he accomplished, but this is inferred and never said - thus taking away again, from an oppotunity for Bucky's emotional growth and healing. The writers didn't even know where Steve was (or if Bucky knows his whereabouts) but they could have indicated something to that effect.

Once Sam has embraced Cap, the series ends. However, despite the jubilant setting of the finale, Bucky is still narrartively unmoored. We are left with the image of him lighthearted and hopeful, but without much substance towards its sustainability and so there is not much satisfaction in it despite the sweetness of its visual impact. But its depth? We are unsure. This is because Sam's ultimate advice to him, that he "serve" others rather than enact vengeance, strips away another truth about Bucky's situation.

That Bucky's desire for retribution and vengeance against those that abused and tormented him is valid and a real victim response. Bucky's perspective is seen as "wrong" instead of a well-documented step stone on the path to solid mental survivorship. Bucky could eventually want to serve -- but serve who?

Again, obviously the answer is: other victims like himself. But the show won't call him a victim at all, and thus Sam's advice feels hollow (serve... the vague and faceless Greater Good?) and Bucky's emotional security at the end of the show feels as if it lacks substance and permanance for the audience.

The payoff for Bucky's healing is almost nonexistent because no one will ever say why he was hurt in the first place (a victim).

Could go on and on about how this is because of Disney's terror of Bucky's perceived compromised masculinity (victimhood, captured, mentally damaged in WWII and present day), visual femininity (hair, slapped by men for insubordination, physically touched and moved against his will, soft spokeness, powerlessness in the narrarive), queer subtext (Steve, his origin as Arnold Roth Steve's gay jewish best friend, perceived jealousy of Peggy, intense affection for Steve), his juxtaposition to Steve and role in Steve's narrative, and their desire to wipe his slate clean with a new Masc Bucky.

Hint: it doesn't work.

(Another) Ten Songs Ten Fics

I was in the middle of writing this fic when Thomas dropped the video and of course the hyped happened and I had to re-write some things, because I was using Deceit’s name as Damien.

Then I realized I needed the comfort because the video killed me!! So I decided to start writing this. This is the third time I write something like this, and I genuinely think this is the best so far, haha.

Anyways, if this is the first time you read something like this, I’ll explain.

Basically it’s a challenge, you put your playlist on random, write about the song it comes and soon as it stopped playing you should stop writing. You can’t skip or pause. I cheated and I paused, lol. This are basically ten fics.

Anyways, I hope y’all enjoy this because I loved writing this, and I’ll say more things in the final notes.

1. All Over Again – BTR  (Roceit)

They were fifteen when they met.  He used to have purple hair and piercings he still had the piercings while Roman used to have long hair that was most of the time in bun.

They weren’t really the perfect couple, of course not, but they tried so damn hard for it too work. They were practically polar opposites, but they loved each other so much that they thought it was everything they needed.

It wasn’t.

When they broke up, it wasn’t a sad horrible break up. They ended their relationship on good terms, and they were okay. They drifted away, sure, but it was because of their own mental health.

Janus knew logically that he would meet Roman again, after all, his twin was basically his best friend. When Remus announced he would marry his boyfriend. He knew inevitably he would run into him again, he was mentally prepared to be polite to him hi, Roman, I’ve seen you on some movies, you’re killing it, oh you’ve read some of my books? Well, thank you.

That didn’t happen, and when they were in the same room the awkwardness was practically palpable.

“Wow, you really could cut it with a knife…” Remus said, “like plastic knife…”

They laughed but pretended it was fine, because it was Remus’ day, and it really was fine, until the alcohol hit them and suddenly, they were too close, telling old jokes, and talking freely.

“Ugh, Jan, why you never called me? I missed you.”

“Do you want me to be honest or do you want me to lie?” He asked, slurring the words together and leaning maybe a little too close into Roman’s space.

“Surprise me.”

“I was afraid of falling all over again for you…”

Roman kissed him, and he knew it wasn’t a lie.

2. Thinking out loud - Ed Sheeran (Logince)

Logan couldn’t help but noticed how oddly good they fit together.

They weren’t polar opposites, no. They were the same face of a golden coin that felt like copper.

The creative side always wanted to be bigger. The logical side wanted to be more.

At the end, love found them in such a mysterious way. They were discussing ideas for the next video, and everyone else decided to call it a day, because it was late, but they stayed up, chatting about anything and everything.

“I just find so weird that you believe in ghosts.” Roman laughed, setting another cup of tea in front of the spectacled-side and sitting next to him.

Logan shrugged, “It made sense, just stay with me, okay?” he felt something bubbly inside him, “ The principle of mass conservation states that for any system closed to all transfers of matter and energy, the mass of the system must remain constant over time, as the system's mass cannot change, so quantity can neither be added nor be removed. Therefore, the quantity of mass is conserved over time. We are basically energy… so, what happens to us when we’re not here anymore? Where does our energy stays? Therefore, ghosts can totally exist.”

“Okay, specs. You totally lost me there.” Logan shook his head, laughing softly.

They fall into a comfortable silence, “If somehow, figments of imagination can become ghosts, I can see that I will be loving you 'til we're 70.”

“Oh…” He was blushing, and he didn’t have to say it back, Roman understood when Logan kissed him.

Love did work in mysterious ways, after all.

3. My apartment’s very clear without you - Garfunkel and Oates (Intrulogical)

Logan fucking hated when his place was dirty. It wasn’t that he organized, but he maintained his home clean.

When he decided to move in with Remus, it was hours of bickering back and forth about Remus’ inability to wash his dishes or the dirty underwear on the floor.

When the broke up, Logan thought that maybe, just maybe, it was for the good. They just weren’t compatible, and his home would be finally fucking clean.

Yes, the house was clean.

However, the home without Remus wasn’t home.

4. Jueves - La Oreja de Van Gogh (Moxiety)

Virgil have seen that guy everyday, and he definitely had a tiny, slight crush on him. It wasn’t such a big deal, but he really wanted to go there and talk to him hello, my name is Virgil, but he just couldn’t gather the courage.

If only he was more handsome, or maybe a little bit taller he would have the courage to say “hi”, but he wasn’t. So he was stuck on the train, watch the blonde-freckled guy gave him a small smile before he left the station.

That was it.

Today was different though. Virgil was wearing his best skinny jeans, just for the guy in the train, he put his special purple eyeliner.

Today was the day, yes.

He was already in the train when Virgil got inside, and they exchanged their normal small smiles.

Today was the day.

Virgil took a deep breath and walk towards the blonde, “Uh, hi…” the guy jumped softly.

“Oh…hello…”

Today was definitely not the day.

Virgil looked away, ashamed and not knowing how to take this conversation, when the other guy started giggling. “Gosh, I am so sorry. I probably look like stalker to you, right?”

“Huh?”

“It’s just, this train doesn’t take me to my home, I have a faster way to get there, but I choose this one because hopefully I get to see you? And maybe ask your name? and then like talk to you? But you’re always looking at my direction and I didn’t know how to take that, as a good sign or as a…”

“It’s a good sign.” Virgil laughed softly, “I’ve been meaning to talk to you for months, but I’m a weirdo.”

“Hey. Don’t talk to you like that.” They shared a laugh. “My name is Patton.”

“Mine is Virgil.” They smiled to each other, finally close. Virgil wanted to touch his hand.

“Can I take you to coffee, Virgil?” He asked, he felt Patton’s heat getting closer, and he shoved all his insecurities aside and took his hand.

“Yes, sure.”

Then they heard the gunshots.

5. Give your heart a break – Demi Lovato (Moceit)

When Patton met Janus it was at a party. One of those colleges parties where there’s too much alcohol and maybe drugs, but Patton wasn’t going to stay there and find out. He was trying to find his way out when he bumped with a person, said person was Janus.

They ended up chatting until two am when Patton’s parents arrive to take him home. The exchange numbers, and Patton was glad that he made friend.

Janus: Tell me when you get home :)

Patton: you too. Patton: also, super crazy but right before I bumped into u I was ready to leave the party so haha, it’s weird

Janus: Sure, Pat, just don’t fall in love with me. I’ve read enough fanfiction to know how this goes.

Patton laughed, because it was nothing more than joke.

Their friendship eventually got stronger, and now here they were five years after that incident, and Patton was head over heels for his best friend.

Patton knew Jan’s trust issues, he knew about his abusive exes, how no matter what Jan always ended up involved with jerks. He wanted nothing more than to wrapped the scarred-boy with a blanket and protect him from everything.

They chilling on Patton’s house, watching a movie, when Patton broke the silence. “Jan?”

He made a sound of acknowledgment, which prompt Patton to continue, “I think I like you.”

“I like you too, Pat, you’re my best friend.”

“No, Janus. I like you… as something more…”

Jan sat up, staring into Patton’s eyes, “I specifically remember telling you to not fall in love with me.”

“Yes, but…”

“No, no buts Patton. This can’t happen. I don’t want this,” his hands made gesture, signaling everything, “to be over… I don’t want you to break my heart…”

“No, Jan… I would neve…”

“They said the same.”

“I’m not like them,” He hold his hands, and he noticed he was shaking. “Jan, please, look at me?”

He did, “I like you too, Pat, but… my heart is too sensitive to…”

“No, Jan… I don’t wanna break your heart, I wanna give your heart a break…” Janus snorted at the pun, “Can I?”

“It won’t be easy, though…”

“That’s fine…” He smiled and gave him a quick peck on his scar, which made Jan tremble a little, “I just want to be with you…”

“You’re a dork, Pat.”

“You like this dork…” He teased, opening his arms to let Janus into a hug.

Janus bit back a smile.

6. Je vai’s t’aimer – Loaune (Dukexiety)

The sides knew that Roman could speak Spanish, and they were just as surprised when Remus yelled merde when he lost a videogame.

They got used to it, of course, but Virgil went wild with that information. He loved hearing Remus’ voice speaking in French “Bah, oui mais j’ai pensé qui l’information n’est pas correct.”  They stared at him, waiting for a translation, “The information is incorrect, bêtes”

Virgil adored when Remus spoke French, but he absolutely melted when he sang it.

“Je vais t'aimer, comme on ne t'a jamais aimée. Je vais t'aimer, plus loin que tes rêves ont imaginé. Je vais t'aimer. Je vais t'aimer.”

They were dancing, or more like rocking each other while Remus sang softly too his… boyfriend? Kissing buddy?

“What does that mean?”

“What?”

“The song.”

“Oh. It’s about cannibalism.”

Virgil snorted, “Of course it is, you ratman.” He gave him a quick kiss on the lips, which Remus gladly reciprocate.

Remus wasn’t ready to translate the real meaning.

Virgil wasn’t ready to hear it.

This was okay

7. One Last Hope-  Danny DeVito (Hercules) (Platonic Roceit, Romantic Prinxiety/Moceit)

“I don’t train heroes anymore.” The gorgon hissed, the snakes on his head hissing with him.

Roman resist the urge to grab his sword and slay the tiny snakes hissing at him, he is your only hope to rescue Virgil, Princey, Logan, the god of knowledge has said when he had prayed for him.

“Please, I only want him back…” He plead.

The gorgon rolled his human eye, the snake eye staring right into his soul, “Oh, yes of course, a hero who wants to rescue a damsel in distress…” He said, looking at his human fingernails, “I’ve never heard that one before.”

“He’s not a damsel…” Roman said, clenching his fist tighter, “and I don’t think his in distress…”

“Tell me the truth then…” The gorgon smile, “and I might consider it.”

And Roman did, how he, a simple mortal and soldier fell in love with the God of Protection, how the Virgil loved him back and they spent so many days near each other. How when Thomas, the creator, noticed that love said prove you’re worthy of him and how he has been trying but it wasn’t enough…

And maybe Janus related to him and how, many years ago he fell in love with the God of Kindness, and how he failed and how he was sentenced to be this… this… monster.

“Okay.”

“Excuse me?”

“Yes. I’ll help you become hero…” Janus said.

Hopefully that way he could see Patton again.

8. La valse d’Amelie – Yann Tiersen  (Royality)

When Roman became a pianist, he never imagined he would become one of the best. He started as a kid, who enjoyed playing the music mainly because it sounded nice. He and Remus would play hours, pretending they were in the Opera and there people making long lines to see them.

Then Remus stopped playing.

Not because something tragic happened, he just stopped liking doing it. Roman never blamed him, they all out-grew phases, and it was okay, but that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt.

Roman promised himself that someday, there would long lines just to see him play the piano and sing. He wanted to be known. He never expected to become the best pianist.

Then Patton appeared, his agent -Thomas, a kind man who enjoy music as much as he enjoyed helping people- told him he was good violinist.

Patton started his career, with Thomas as his agent, and Roman couldn’t help but feel slightly… jealous

You had it bad, bro. Remus said, when Roman entered their shared apartment, railing about how unpolished and childish the violinist was.

“Do you hate me?” Patton asked one day in the studio, Roman was just packing his things up.

“What? Of course not! I barely know you!” He gritted, clearly annoyed but pretending he wasn’t.

“Oh…” He said, staring at the black piano. “My brother used to play the piano.”  Roman stayed silent, because what was he supposed to say with that information? Patton didn’t notice, he was absentmindedly touching one of the tiles, “He got sick…” he said, “Jan always told me he found fun playing, so I decided to play homage to him.”

“Whenever I play the violin, I’m thinking about him, hoping that wherever he is, he knows I’m also having fun…”

Now, now, Roman felt like a jerk. “I’m sorry for your loss.”

Patton shrugged, “Thanks.”

“My brother stopped playing when we were twelve. He said he didn’t like it anymore, but sometimes I think he was insecure, and I don’t know… sometimes I feel he hate me.”

Patton laugh wetly, “You should talk to him.”

Roman hummed, not knowing what else to say. “Want grab a coffee?”

“My? Is Roman Prince asking me on a date?” Patton laugh, cleaning the small tear that had gathered in his eye.

Roman shook his head, laughing, “This was a bad idea, never mind.”

“No, no. I want coffee!!”

They ended up having many  coffees.

In their wedding, Remus play the piano with his brother, and if Roman cried, no one talked about it.

9. La Leyenda del Hada y el Mago – Rata Blanca (Logicality)

Once upon a time, there was a powerful wizard, which power could only be compared with strength of the sun. His knowledge was beyond even the most powerful sage, and everyone was scared of him.

He wasn’t bad, but he held so much power under his hands, everyone was so scared of him. He hated that.

Even though he held so much power, he wasn’t able to find company, much less love.

One day he was collecting herbs for his potions, when heard someone crying. He held his wand near himself, scared that maybe it was a trap.

That was how he found them, the smallest fae he had ever seen, inside a small cage, singing a sorrow song. His heart broke at the look of the trapped fairy, so he decided to help them.

“Don’t say a word.” He said, conjuring quickly a spell, which melted the cage.

The fae giggled and flied to him. “You didn’t have to save me…” They said and shifted to a height similar to Logan’s, “but I appreciate the gesture, magic one.”

Logan nodded, and carry on with his day. What he didn’t expected was the small fae fling near him. “Can I have your name?”

“I know how fae works, little one.” Logan said, not even looking at their direction.

The fae pouted, actually pouted, “I can give you mine, that way, I can’t hold you against you…” Logan shook his head, “Please, magic one, I wanna friend.” He whined. Logan stayed silent.

“Okay, fine. My name is Patton, with double te and en.”

“I am Logan.”

And for a small moment, he didn’t feel so alone.

10. Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride – Mark Kaeli’i Ho’oamalu (Familiar Everyone)

When they were kids, it was Virgil’s comfort movie. Deceit would play it over, and over again, holding his brothers to with an arm.

“We are Ohana, no matter what happens.” Dee would say, kissing the white hair of the young creativity and the eyes of the anxiety.

Then, of course, Virgil fucked it up and left his ohana behind. He didn’t want to be evil, he didn’t want to hurt anyone.

Eventually, they all learned that they weren’t dark and light sides, they were just sides of a complex human being. The rights and wrongs were beyond the white and black. Of course, they still butthead a lot, like all families, but at the end they were family.

So here they were, in the Commons, having a movie marathon because Patton demand it.

“Aw, Jan!” Remus said with his octopus onesie, “Look! Lilo and stitch! Like old times!”

Virgil tensed, because he knew that De- Janus, was still slightly mad at him, and rightfully so.

“Oh, we used to watch that movie, like, all day.” Roman continued. The twins didn’t even let the others say something and they decided to play he movie.

They were in the middle of Stitch fight with Gantu when Vee felt the head of Jan against his shoulder, “I am happy.”

“Huh?”

“Our ohana got bigger.” He smiled.

Virgil stared at Logan and Patton quietly bickering over the cookies, the twins singing and saying the dialogues, and Jan resting on Virgil.

“This is my family,” Virgil said, with a very bad imitation of Stitch voice, “It’s small and broken, but still good.”

“Yeah, still good.”

1. I think this fic explain itself very well. I can see Remus totally laughing his ass off when he realized he hooked up again with his college boyfriend. Also? Punk Deceit? Sign me the fuck up. 2. I adored writing this one. I can’t help but imagine Logan and Roman running in circled around in each other until someone else tells them, and I think this is the example of Logan realizing he liked Roman. It just cutesy Logince. 3. Human AU. Nothing else to add, except that it’s very small. 4. Okay. Wow. This song talks about the terrorist attacks in Madrid, the day March 11, there was a bomb in the train. The song breaks my heart and I rarely listen to it because it squeezed my heart. In the song, the girl dies. When the song popped out, I was like oh no. I didn’t want to write about a terrorist (Muslim terrorism) attack, so I opted for a shooting because… yes. I like how it turned out but I can’t help but feel bad about writing about that. 5. Nothing else to say, but I loved meta Janus. I also really love that song. Might write something larger about this. 6. Okay, so first of all, I haven’s practice my French in YEARS so I apologize if I made any mistake. could you do a meta on dabi,hawks and endeavor theres something interesting about thoses three there was even a chapter about those three theres a common occurance about them that i can't put into words

There is a connection between all three of them.

So a follow up from my last post, there’s a question of agency between the three of them. [x]

Definition of Agency 

What agency means is essentially the freedom and capacity to live or act in a defined world. In a literature sense, we can interpret this in a few different ways. We could look at a specific character in a novel, and see his/her ability to make choices, act freely, and control their respective lives within the novel. The character is able to engage socially, take action on desired things, and have control of their own life. [x].

Basically, let’s look at it from a different angle than the last post though. When it comes to the connection between Endeavor, Dabi, and Hawks, just as important as Agency, their ability to make choices is motivation. 

Definition of Motivation

In literature, “motivation” is defined as a reason behind a character’s specific action or behavior. This type of behavior is characterized by the character’s own consent and willingness to do something.

There are two types of motivation: one is intrinsic, while the other one is extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is linked to personal pleasure, enjoyment and interest, while extrinsic motivation is linked to numerous other possibilities. Extrinsic motivation comes from some physical reward such as money, power, or lust. Intrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is inspired by some internal reward such as knowledge, pride, or spiritual or emotional peace or wellbeing, etc. [x]

So basically now we’re looking at the characters from two angles, number one what choices do they have room to make, and number two in those limited choices what motivates them to eventually make the choices that they do. 

So, I would say the connection between the three of them is that they all chose to pursue being a hero in some way, yes even Dabi who is a villain cares about the idea of becoming a hero. 

Now Endeavor’s are the hardest to discern, since his reasoning to want to be a hero is vague at best. Trying my best to discern though, it seems that Endeavor one, worked really hard to be a hero and believed his hard work should have been rewarded with some sort of feeling of accomplishment. It’s the same reason that Bakugo freaked out so badly when Todoroki did not face him at his strongest in the tournament, because his own feeling of accoplishment was wrong because he didn’t believe he earned it.

So, it’s really hard to discern, but the idea of being number one itself was soething that Endeavor was after, and facing the fact that really no matter how hard he strives he would be at his limit and unable to surpass All Might who was just better and stronger than him in any way took a number out on his ego. This is my best attempt at explanation, it’s not really clear what Endeavor wants out of being a hero. 

It’s a thematic idea that is explored in MHA at least, the desire to be the strongest. Whether or not that desire itself is a good or bad thing, but also because that strong drive can drive others to do terrible things. 

The best way I can explain it though is that Endeavor believes he’s entitled to a certain sense of accomplishment after all that hard work he did to be number one, but because there was such a huge gap in front of him he was never able to reach that accomplishment and thus he took his feelings out on the others around him. 

Basically, despite Horikoshi trying to present Endeavor as a character motivated by heroic means at this point, pretty much every bit of his past characterization contradicts this. Endeavor is pretty consistently characterized as an abuser, it’s all about his feelings and his own sense of accomplishment and worth, and he uses Shoto and everybody else in his family to those ends. There’s malice in the way he treats Shoto, especially when Shoto implies he has desires of his own. Basically, Endeavor attacked his family out of a perceived lack of respect from the world, and a perceived lack of feeling of accomplishment which he thought he was owed due to all of his hard work. So, there’s something especially toxic about Endeavor’s motivation to be a hero, one could even call it toxic masculinity if MHA were like… more thematically consistent about anything.

But let’s simplify for a moment and say Endeavor’s motivation for becoming a hero is really in line with the society of quirks we’re presented with in MHA. That he has a strong quirk, and he works hard, therefore he should rise to the top with his strong quirk and be stronger than anyone else, and defeat bad guys and that is what a hero is. Endeavor followed that line of thinkng from society perfectly, but he wasn’t able to become the strongest. 

He’s obsessed with quirks and strength the same way society is, and even forced a quirk marriage which was said to be a negative aspect of humanity’s budding obsession with quirks and wanting quirks to be stronger. 

So, Endeavor’s motivation for becoming a hero is entirely personal. However, Endeavor had the most agency to make his choice out of the three I’m presenting here. There was no pressuring circumstances for him to do what he did, except for the pressure that Endeavor put on himself. Endeavor was basically free to choose to become anything, and he chose to become a hero. Unlike Dabi, and Hawks he could have just become a hero and been satisfied with that especially due to the lack of external pressure but it was never enough for him. 

Endeavor who had the most agency to choose, also destroyed the agency of others around him, his own family. He may be responsible for creating Touya/Dabi (the rest of this post is going to go forward on this assumption) but he definitely used his wealth of agency, fame, money, resources, in order to completely destroy and cut short the agency of both Rei and Todoroki for his own purposes.

Also it’s important to note that villains are usually the ones which limit the agency of others. Villains seize agency in order to act and create the circumstances, and heroes respond to those circumstances. Except the greatest antagonist to Shoto’s own arcs, the one that created the circumstances that he has to respond to, is the hero Endeavor. Then next on the line is Hawks. Hawks also has shaky at best motivations for being a hero, and partially selfish ones but for entirely different reasons. 

As elaborated on in the last post, Hawks was raised by the hero system, saved fro a troubled home, and told because he had talent he simply had to become a hero. 

So, if Hawks has empty motivations in this case it’s because his own agency is limited. From childhood he’s almost always done what others have asked for him, and his ability to make his own decisions, or be informed by his own motivations was pretty much nonexistant. His name is his hero name, he’s entirely Hawks.

Why is Hawks always resolving things on his own? He’s been taught by the system that there’s absolutely nobody else he can rely on. He’s been used as a tool from the beginning so the best way he can adapt to this is by making himself into the most efficient tool possible. “Well, I’ll still be a tool in the end but at least I’ll be a pretty damn good tool.” with the idea that if he does his job well enough he might be able to break free from the system that he’s become such a vital part of. 

Hawks has to work as efficiently as possible, he’s obsessed with saving others and being the best even if he has to do all the work on his own and only stick his sidekicks with clean up. He’s basically tied to the job, and also of the idea of doing everything all on his own, simply because he has the ability to do so.

The irony being that Hawks obsesses over the idea of freedom, he works tirelessly so others can be free, he encourages them to be free and not waste themselves, and yet Hawks has no freedom of his own, specifically because he was born with those wings. The symbol of his freedom his wings, are also a curse to him. 

So, Hawks entire motivation is agency, he wants to have agency, to be motivated to do things for his own reasons and not fro the sake of othes. He believes that people who are strong enough to fight for their own reasons are the ones that can be relied on and put people at ease but he is not one of them.

Which would explain Hawks strange opinion of Endeavor, even though once again Endeavor is somebody who created a broken home, a child abuser, the same kind of home that Hawks came from and is responsible for his current situation.

Simply put, Endeavor had agency and drive and he was able to decide those things for himself, something that Hawks is fundamentally lacking in and unable to see himself as able to do.

Hawks is so exhausted he can’t even bring himself to try, and he falsely sees Endeavor as somebody who did try even when it was impossible. So, he envies that part of him. Even after wearing himself out completely to become somebody who saves almost everyone and willingly sacrifices all of those feathers at a drop of a hat, Hawks still does not believe he’s done enough and lacks the energy to go further, and thinks he has to rely on someone like Endeavor with a big flashy power in order to set people at ease. Hawks from the beginning was setting up and manipulating Endeavor to be a symbol. He pretty much says so.

Hawks is more suited for the position, he’s more political, tactical, he genuinely wants to save people, he’s helpful to them and a friendly face, the only thing he’s lacking is being a total powerhouse which is what society thinks it needs right now, so he sets up Endeavor in his place while he works behind the scenes. 

So, what Hawks is motivated by is being powerful enough to put people at ease, however the choices Hawks makes in order to fulfill that motivation are completely opposite. 

His motivation is to have more agency as a hero, but his choices are always one that specifically limit his own agency. If Endeavor is a character that has all the agency in the world and abuses it to limit the agency of others, then Hawks is a character that limits his own agency over and over again even though all he desires is freedom. Both of these characters are making these choices because they revolve around the concept of being a hero. 

Hawks also, was limited in his agency, in what he could become because of the circumstances of his birth and he was born with a body and quirk ideal for becoming a hero, and he still feels pressure and aftereffects of that upbringing even as an adult. 

Then finally we bring ourselves to Dabi/Touya. 

If Shoto and Hawks were born to become heroes, then Dabi specifically was born not to be a hero. His body would never be able to handle it. Not only to the point of not having an ideal combination of quirks and being a failure like Natsu and Fuyumi, but to the point of being physically disabled. His greater fire actively harms him because of the lack of his body and his own constitution, and the person who decided to make this risky choice to blend quirks was Endeavor, not caring about the child’s well being but rather how the child was born to fulfill his own ambitions. So, Dabi was given a shitty body since birth which limited his choices of what he could become in a really quirk obsessed society, and his father did this on purpose to him and threw him out as a failure when he did not turn out the right way.

So, the person so far born with the least agency in their situation is Touya. Whether or not he wanted to become a hero is not really a choice to him because his quirk destroys his own body, and his father dismissed him as a failure. 

He’s also the inverse of Hawks, he was adopted became a hero whether he wanted to or not because he was born with a quirk that was ideal for the job. Dabi was abandoned and neglected because he was born with a quirk unideal for being a hero, and also his body would actively be destroyed if he pursued that path. 

So, his response is to believe as Stain did that because he was excluded, that society itself was wrong about him and wrong about heroes. 

Dabi’s introduction tells us two things, he doesn’t like people who aren’t dedicated to a cause, and who kill without reason like Himiko instantly being put off by her.

Second that he’s driven the same way that the hero killer is. That even acting as a villain, he wants to make a society where heroes act like real heroes. 

It’s even apparent in his taunts to Aizawa, he tells Aizawa to act like a proper hero, to save his students. What’s a better call to action for a hero anyway than a proper antagonist. 

He praises Aizawa for acting properly as a hero should. So, of allt he characters Dabi had the least amount of agency, that’s not to say he was forced to doing what he did, but he was the least suited to becoming a hero, and even then there’s still some part of Dabi that wants heroes to act properly, and there’s a cause he acts for that wants to affect some positive change. 

Yet, at the same time born with the least agency, still motivated by cause and wanting heroes to act like heroes, Dabi is also of the three the character that burns up the most agency. Villains often have the most agency, because they don’t care whose agency they trample over to get what they want. In order for Dabi to have his current freedom, he had to walk over others and kill them, that became a necessary step to acheiving his goals in his mind.

Let’s say Dabi is acting like a vigilante here and giving him the most benefit of the doubt. That Stain did not like villains that acted without just cause either, so a bunch of low brand thieves only out to steal for themselves aren’t doing anything to improve society so they’re unnecessary, they’re in the way so Dabi burns them. Dabi’s ultimate goal of improving society becomes built on their sacrifice then, his agency comes from taking theirs away.

This is something Dabi is questioned about twice, you’re taking away living breathing people from the world, people with connections, all for your own purposes. No other member of the villain’s league is really questioned on their murders the way Dabi is. Because Dabi is the one who is trying to justify his killings as being for an improvement to society, the most out of anybody in the league. 

Dabi’s own life was cut short, and his response now is to cut short the lives of others, for some perceived higher purpose of his. However, even still he differs from Endeavor, because of all the implicaitons that Dabi himself knows what he’s doing is wrong is feels guilty about it, and is actively destroying his own body in the process, Endeavor and Shoto both have one burn scar, Dabi’s entire body is covered in them. 

Dabi’s too are inherently selfish and self driven motivation. He wants to correct the hero system yes, but only because the hero system is what created him, and he knows those cracks exist because he’s the one that fell through them. As much as it would benefit everybody, just like Hawks it’s still a deeply personal grudge created by his own circumstances. 

So, Endeavor sacrificed the agency of others. Hawks sacrifices his own agency. And in his wild bid for freedom from his circumstances, Dabi is the one who makes the most radical choices. Born the son of a hero, he did the unthinkable and cast away all of society’s restrictions to become a villain instead. In order to walk that path he actively devours the agency of others around him. At the same time, he’s also limiting his own agency because he’s pushing his body and mind to their natural in born limits. Dabi acts both self destructive, and destructive of everything else around him. In order to gain agency, he destroys himself and others to get the agency he was denied when he was younger. 

Yet, all three of these characters are still connected by their want to be a hero. They share a revolving motivation though each of them took a drastically different path.

             alec and pain *!

                      trigger warning: abuse

          alec has a lust and a love for pain. there’s a complicated relationship between pain and pleasure in his mind. he only likes being hurt by anyone he is engaged in sex with or anyone he has accepted into his circle of trust which is notoriously small. he also has a proclivity for abusive relationships, only semi-consciously. he does not necessarily prefer them in a way that romanticizes abuse. he is simply accustomed to abusive dynamics and has misguided concepts of what is abuse due to being a victim of abuse in a variety of ways. disclaimer: I am writing this as someone who has experience in the following issues and is speaking from that experience. I do not mean to represent anyone else’s similar experiences as we all go through things differently. I do not intend to romanticize any of the following material. it is merely fact about alec’s genuinely dangerous ways of thinking. 

alec believes everyone will hurt him eventually

              alec does not believe the best in people. he does not think there is any reason why people should be their best; he’s very agnostic and does not believe in any universal code of morality. however, he is simply conditioned to expect the worst of people. he is very much in agreement with hobbes that at their core humans are evil beings, animalistic and cruel. pain is to be expected at every turn. to kill is the only way to ensure one will never be hurt and so pain is a necessary part of life. its a nonissue.

alec sees himself as an object first and a person second

              since his transformation, alec has been a weapon first and foremost. his personality and his intellect are not the reason he was saved. he was not saved because it was the right thing to do. he was saved to be a weapon, a tool. he has always been a piece, an object. he does not question it. thats all he is. he is no longer a living breathing person. he died and was reborn as a dagger, something to be used for violence and wielded at the whims of the volturi masters. he believes he owes them and that he can only be safe or valued if he is their weapon. he has no other choice.

alec has grown accustomed to pain and sees it as a demonstration of passion and intense emotion, even positive emotions

              he was often harassed and beaten as a human and his life ended in utter torment. since then he has been feeling the burn of fire in his throat for 1200 years. his sns makes everything incredibly uncomfortable and he is simply used to living a life filled with carnage and bloodshed. pain is normal and it is in everything. if anything, he has noticed in the volturi and the world around him that when people care deeply they act out in violence and with intensity. when caius would get upset and wage wars or when aro would order an assassination for a scorned invitation to join the volturi, he was told they were simply very passionate and they cared too much. the world was a dangerous intense place and sometimes that passion manifested in violence. violence makes more sense than love; it is all he knows.

alec has an internal belief that regardless of his confidence or security, all people will see him as a monster and violence is a physical confirmation of this

              alec does not hate himself. however, he believes everyone else does. everyone has except for the volturi masters and even they frequently see him as a tool rather than a person. ever since his abuse at the hands of the villagers and his subsequent transformation into a literal monster, he has been a creature of darkness and abuse rejected by society. no one has been any different. by being hurt or assaulted, he is simply reassured. his anxiety and trauma convince him of their hate; the violence is a reassuring confirmation of that paranoia.

violence shocks him out of some symptoms of his mental disorders and his oversensitive sns 

              the shock of a slap or the distraction of a fight is reassuring because not only will it sharpen his sadness into rage but it also justifies the constant fight or flight reaction induced by his anxiety and that causes his sns. he essentially feels almost healthy when he is angry or involved in a physical fight because not only is the paralyzing sadness transformed but he also feels physically in tune. his adrenaline and panic is appropriate and comfortable for once.

his first sexual experiences (excluding those with women) were incredibly violent and unsafe due to the attitudes towards homosexual behavior at the time

              this is quite self explanatory. alec’s very early years/centuries were especially hard because not only were his thoughts heavily influenced by trauma and poor conditioning but the outside world rarely disagreed with him. they too saw him as a monster, a deviant and other such horrific derogatory things.

alec enjoys risk and the possibility of being seriously injured 

              the risk and danger once again make him feel healthier and fulfilled by justifying his fight or flight instinct, his physical discomfort, and his endless panic. its a satisfying link of mind and body. and with his penchant for self harm related behavior and self destruction, the possibility of being hurt is thrilling.

alec enjoys feeling overwhelmed and impassioned during sex in a battle of wills and bodies

              once more this relates to his need to get out of his own head and be overwhelmed by physicality. but it also plays to his generic kink for intensity, strength, passion, competition, etc. 

alec’s durability in supernatural verses has gifted him with a reckless abandon to indulge in the above instincts

              alec has no reason to really fear the outcome of any of the above dangerous behavior and often uses this as an excuse to engage in it. in his human verses this does not apply but it also does not stop him. he is always quite a reckless person when it comes to controlling urges related to his mental illness.

alec’s self imposed apathy leads him to crave intense waves of emotion

              alec’s apathy is part personality trait and part self imposed asceticism. he tries to contain and suppress his tumultuous emotions, choosing to repress his trauma and any chance of dealing with the, rather than turn it outwards or deal with it in a healthy manner. because he spends months at a time without emoting or laughing or truly feeling much more than mild emotion at most, he often finds himself in a very precarious situation when he is close to anxiety/panic attacks and his meltdowns. during these periods, he craves intense release of his emotions and energy to simply break free of his apathy and simply scream into the abyss that he cant be composed any longer.

alec finds the dominance of pain arousing

              this is quite straightforward. alec has a pain kink without any of the above trauma and conditioning. he always finds it arousing and unhealthily thinks it is a display of passion and strength.

abuse feels familiar to alec and he understands how to navigate abusive relationships better than healthy ones

              after the life he has led, abusive behavior and violence/cruelty feel familiar to alec. he can read and understand it infinitely better than love or selflessness. he has never truly been exposed to those in a pure and true form since his human life ended. it feels foreign and insincere and otherworldly to him. abusive relationships feel accessible and appropriate for him, something he not only prefers but also deserves.

alec often goes through bouts of depression where he believes he deserves the hurt

              a major component of alec’s depression is self image issues. he truly does believe he is a monster and an object and a pin cushion a majority of the times. in his eyes, he deserves that pain. he wants to hurt because his depression inspires self hatred in a very specific and unusual way where alec doesnt necessarily feel bad about being the way he is but believes and acknowledges that he is a terrible person deserving of violence and pain.

he is incredibly loyal but only is familiar with a manipulative sort of authority and therefore believes he owes his submission to those he is loyal to

              alec only knows the authority and power of the volturi which is often if not always very manipulative, abusive, and violent in nature. when he accepts people into his miniscule circle of trust, he has decided he will never not love them, that they are a fixed point of his world. and any figure of authority or love that he has chosen to obey will automatically reach a pedastal which allows them to treat him in a similarly abusive way. he only knows submission as a form of love and loyalty. it is natural for him and clearcut which his anxiety craves.

he would rather take all the pain in the world than see those he loves suffer an ounce of discomfort

              when alec actually loves someone he would gladly burn at the stake again than see them hurt. he will be a lightning rod for his loved ones. if those loved ones are the ones who decide to hurt him, he is also perfectly comfortable accepting it as a way for them to release anger or tension or for any other reason honestly.

alec excuses abuse and sometimes even believes he deserves it

               essentially, all the earlier points are evidence and explanation of this. the life alec has led has been fucked up and abusive and unhealthy. but its all he knows. its normal, commonplace. and he survived. thats a large component,. if he has already survived it, why should he care. he will be hurt anyway so as long as he isnt dying the pain is inescapable and inevitable. as stated, he often believes he deserves that pain as well. its his life and its natural. if he werent in pain he would be in heaven and he doesnt believe in heaven.
