the way some people characterize truthless recluse almost feels like he's been corrupted by mystic flour and not shadow milk. i like the interpretation of him being miserable and just. overall suffering from severe depression now that he's corrupted but when people don't give him any character outside it just bothers me a little. we've only seen the way he interacts with people he knew before and has a different and less positive viewpoint on now, it's safe to assume he would not act exactly like that towards everyone (strangers, smilk, candy apple, etc)

his large hands wrapped around her neck, securing it like a collar. then he pushed her head down into the sink, pressing her face aganist the cool tile underwater.

it didn't take long for water to fill her lungs, running all the air within her out. she tried to scream but everything came out as bubbles, filling more water into her throat. she could feel her head swimming, all thoughts floating around until they disappeared entirely.

she tried to look at the man behind her, tried to squirm her way out of his grasp. her legs kicked and her arms flailed helplessly. her vision was dimming, darkness rimming the edges of her peripheral. surely she wouldn't die like this- surely this couldn't be the end.

the leather of his gloves rubbed her skin as he kept her underwater, her poor body being drained of her life force. finally a small thought formed into the dark of her brain, a fuzzy unfocused thing. but it was just enough.

she flopped into the tub, letting her arms fall down. she relaxed her body and stopped fighting, praying to all gods that he would think she was dead.

thankfully he did think it. he finally removed the bruising hold on her neck and stood up. she kept her eyes tightly shut, shutting her mouth and waiting for the sounds of his footsteps.

he was gone and she was alive. barely but still. she was okay.

I don't understand why Uchiha clan believed that Madara stole his brothers eyes and killed him... Haven't they saw that Izuna was mortally wounded by Tobirama?

they saw izuna badly wounded by tobirama, yes (well, the ones there that day did), but it's quite likely they weren't actually there when he died. we don't even know what exactly killed him - infection, blood loss, organ failure... no clue. most likely, only a handful of people were actually there when he passed, if anyone, and we'll probably never know.

the main reason for how this rumor started isn't ever stated, but it's certainly implied: madara's communication skills are dogshit. he doesn't trust people, he's distant and uncommunicative. he's also a bit of a quitter, socially. he doesn't believe in telling people things or sharing his side of the story bc as far as he's concerned they've all already made up their minds and it's pointless to try and change them, which leads to the gap between himself and his clan widening, which leads to him closing off, etc etc the cycle continues.

according to hashirama, by the time izuna died, the war was pretty clearly going in the senju's favor. it's difficult to say how much of that can be blamed on who/what, but imo it's in large part due to the senju suddenly having a walking forest deity on their side. but from the uchiha's perspective, the on-and-off clan war that had been more or less even for however many years it had been going on was suddenly looking more and more unbalanced.

moreover, it's likely the uchiha's financial situation was starting to worsen as well. when we first meet tajima and izuna, both of them are wearing armor

but by the time hashirama and madara become heads of their clans, only izuna is

(couldn't find the manga version but i own the volume and this is more or less accurate)

it makes sense for tajima to prioritize himself and his sons, not even as a father but as a pragmatic clan head who knows one of them will succeed him. even madara (still can't find the image so i just took a picture with my phone, sorry for the poor quality)

you can't really tell in the first one but by the second it's pretty obvious - madara wore armor on the battlefield until he became clan head.

as i said, it made sense for tajima to armor selectively from a pragmatic standpoint, but it makes sense for madara as a character to forgo armoring himself at all, both bc he's deeply arrogant (and correctly so - the only person who really poses a threat to him is hashirama, and armor is only gonna help so much there) and bc i think he's the sort of person who wouldn't use a resource for himself and not his clan, especially if he didn't really think he needed it. that last bit is just my best guess, though.

so anyway i imagine the tide of the war turning combined with a worsening financial situation (each likely not helped by the other) had already primed the uchiha to view madara as a bad leader, regardless of how much of that was his fault.

so, here's what we know happened immediately pre-ceasefire:

-izuna is grievously injured -madara retreats from battle with izuna; several uchiha surrender to the senju -izuna dies and madara takes his eyes (unclear what order this happened in) -madara shows up to fight hashirama (+co but he doesn't care about them lol) by himself (note: it's possible that in the anime he brought other people with him, but in the manga madara is the only uchiha we see present during the pre-founding fight) -madara and hashirama agree to end the war

we don't know how madara broke this to the uchiha clan, we don't know how much they know of what actually happened. here's what the uchiha clan knows happened immediately pre-ceasefire:

-lord izuna is grievously injured -lord madara retreats from the battle, which likely means they lose, and several uchiha desert to the senju -lord madara, whose only (as far as we the readers know) heir has just died, fucks off to go fight the senju (presumably he at least told them he was going to go do this. i hope) -lord madara comes back and tells them the war is over and they're going to be building a village to share with the senju (or something along those lines) -at some point during all of this, lord madara ended up with lord izuna's eyes

whatever else they learned about the situation, madara would have had to tell them himself (with his words, in a conversation with other humans) or they would've had to find out from someone else who was there - i.e., someone from the senju clan. here's what the senju clan knows happened pre-ceasefire:

-lord tobirama wounds uchiha izuna -the uchiha retreat and several of them defect -uchiha madara shows up, briefly has a yell-off with lord hashirama (uchiha madara says uchiha izuna is dead but left him "power to protect the uchiha", lord hashirama mentions a peace agreement, uchiha madara says "fuck you fight me"), and then fights until he literally can't move anymore -lord tobirama attempts to kill uchiha madara, which would effectively end the war for good, and is stopped by lord hashirama pretty aggressively -lord hashirama tries to reason with uchiha madara again but gets told "if u want me to trust u kill urself" to which he says "ok bet", orders the clan not to continue fighting the uchiha after he's gone, and makes to stab himself in the stomach, which would effectively end the war for good in favor of the uchiha, who had basically already lost -uchiha madara stops him from killing himself and agrees to the truce, meaning the uchiha have in all but name lost and conceded the war to the senju

we don't know how much of the two clans are aware of hashirama and madara's childhood friendship, but it was probably impossible to hide that something had happened. hashirama is naturally charismatic, so he could probably win back his clan's trust pretty easily, but madara.... not so much.

so if your clan head with a history of not-so-reliable(-seeming) behavior abandoned the clan to go fight his ex-friend right after his brother and heir died, having taken his eyeballs, and then came back announcing a truce with your age-old enemy, and then you found out from the grapevine some version of "madara could have won the whole war if he'd just let hashirama harakiri himself but actively chose to stop him".... what would you think?

don't ask yourself "why would the uchiha think madara killed izuna and stole his eyes", ask yourself this instead: why wouldn't they think he did that?

Ep 22-23 Commentary

Ha...I was inexplicably nervous for eps 22-23 and it looks like I was right to be (-: What a rollercoaster. Spoilers below!

I've just come out of ep 23 and uh????? holy shit????? ZYC????

Ok ok but to backtrack, let's do my comments semi-chronologically:

Ep 22:

A carry-over from ep 21 that I have to mention—heck yeah PSJ give WZY hell. She doesn't have all that many lines but she sure knows how to make them count. Also seeing PSJ and WX get screen time just the two of them makes my brain go "yay <3"

Back to ep 22, loved the fake-out sundial ayeee that was a nice Chekhov's gun that also brings the real sundial back into relevance for later. Also me eating up the PSJ and ZYC crumb of an interaction has brought to my attention how starved I am of their screen time together.

This whole ep was a great lament towards the feared inevitable. Every sad downcast look from ZYC, every complicated glance WX gives him. A wonderful, terrible crossroads for these characters. I love that for ZYC especially, it's such an incredible mess of emotion coming to a head. Bad enough that he's come to care about the demon who killed his family and ruined his life, bad enough that he's sworn a blood oath he regrets and tied himself to punishing someone he no longer finds culpable, bad enough that ZYZ's life or death depends solely on his choice and ZYZ is constantly practically begging for death when ZYC wants him to live. How much immensely worse it makes the whole situation that WX is literally ZYZ's soulmate. And obviously the whole team has only grown more and more attached to ZYZ, too. ZYC's personal turmoil aside, how heavy must that responsibility and guilt be? For the finishing blow that only he can deliver to also deeply threaten every other person he cares about? Everyone understands in the abstract what must happen and why, but just like seeing ZYZ lose control firsthand, the gulf between understanding and experiencing is so unimaginably wide. If he kills ZYZ, can there really be no resentment from his friends? From WX?

Also it seems ZYC only wears cloaks so that he can give them to other people lmao

Ah fuck, the farewell drinks. I didn't even factor in how ZYC might not survive the encounter (''': The drama truly was like hm can we possibly give ZYC a worse day than that night his whole fam died? Maybe give him a bunch of new family members and also the blade and the fate and the sole responsibility to potentially irrevocably scar said family members with? And he might die in the process too? (-: haha maybe? (((-:

Oh. Oh. Addendum. I forgot this til I saw it mentioned in another post—ZYC recounting his oath as he watched WX smile when they discussed reviving the tree...I could feel him weighing those words against his own life, against ZYZ's life, against WX's happiness. One way out of this impossible situation is indeed to doom himself. I'm in pieces.

Damn if WX isn't dedicated heart and soul, going into the sundial like that. I'm sad no one could keep her company for those 300 years but also I guess that's kind of an impossible ask (and maybe not survivable for the other non-goddess mortals? I'm admittedly very unclear on sundial time loophole logistics). It would have been nice to see someone offer though, even just to be turned down.

Ooh I like the soul needle fake-out, given this show's penchant for retroactive "actually we had a plan all along" moments. A good subversion of the narrative's own style.

Also I saved this for the end because it doesn't really fit the linearity of my comments but what the fuuuuuuuck oh my god I absolutely flipped out at this scene:

I am at once rabidly intrigued and at the same time not sure if I'll be satisfied with whatever payoff will come for this so I don't want to overindulge in theorizing and setting my own expectations too high. Maybe this is just a fevered hallucination, maybe it means nothing (I hope it means something). But damn!!! What a gorgeous man crazy scene.

In conclusion, ep 22 had some good stuff for me. Plot development and reflection and tension enough that I may have been satisfied with just that one episode. But they gave us two, so onward to ep 23 comments!

Ep 23:

I like how many solid reasons the team has to suspect ZYC being possessed. Even though I withheld judgment during my watch given how quickly the show usually confirms that kind of stuff with a possession mark, just simply casting that doubt made the whole build up that much more intense.

ZYC slowly walking down the corridor with the whole grounds lit a somber and haunting gold—*chef's kiss*

ZYC's monologue to a catatonic ZYZ is so important to me. The closest we'll get to his internal monologue about this whole situation. The kinds of things said when we think there's no conscious listener.

Okay so, having finished this episode and looking back, Li Lun's hands coming up from behind ZYC was not to denote possession (at least in this episode), potentially is a visual from ZYZ's POV, and seems related to the above screencap. I am so, so curious. Once again, I'm stopping myself from further speculation because I want to be surprised but ahhhhhhhhh

PSJ shooting at Ao Yin is so gorgeous. Her action scenes seriously never disappoint—the creativity of her fight choreos!! Also very cool that the whole team is getting to take part in the action, not just the two male leads.

Bai Jiu possession was not on my bingo card but I sure do love that we literally saw the possession take place and I still didn't connect the dots. Good shitttt. Also oh no ): ZYC was telling the truth about the soul needle, he was just tricked ):

Seriously from the Ao Yin case to getting PSJ released to reviving the Divine Wood to getting tricked by possessed!Bai Jiu to making pear soup to fighting ZYZ to fighting Li Lun—when will ZYC get a single goddamn vacation day holy shit.

Also when will WX tear up that contract so ZYZ can stop having a mild heart attack every time he wants to kiss her ): &I love that they saved the 300-year montage for this moment. While their ship doesn't give me brainrot personally, who could be unmoved by that incredible and undisclosed sacrifice? That's soulmatism.

Okay, I'd seen clips of them filming the ZYC and Li Lun fight but damn I did not expect it'd be happening right now!! Right after already taking damage from ZYZ? And my god is Li Lun brutal. The two actors did such an impressive job on this entire fight, what with Li Lun's ease and ZYC's suffering. I really appreciated the extensive hand-to-hand combat after Li Lun literally obliterated ZYC's sword. (Also though, given the origin of that sword, I kept hoping for a flashback to ZYC's brother once it broke, but alas, no dice.) Anyway, the show does not play around about ZYC whump it seems. I was very very shook by that throat punch; that shit legitimately looked like it hurt.

Honestly, I had a hard time with the extended ZYZ and Li Lun conversation at the very end because oh my god someone please heal ZYC lmao. But of course, that's the end of the episode~~

Y'all...check on your local ZYC stans because I was not okay after all that (': I need a heaping dose of comfort after all that hurt, but as always I'm cautious of hoping for much from canon itself. So yeah! Ep 23 was solid, but I would probably be in better shape if today's release just ended on ep 22 ((':

Time to go wait for the cast's Hi6 episode to drop so I can heal my battered heart ;-;

I've been trying my best to post an art piece every week. I intended to post a different drawing yesterday, but I wasn't able to finish it in time. I needed to draw something smaller & quicker since my self-imposed deadline was getting too close! I didn't have any WIP headshots I could finish instead & the poll I posted last week hadn't closed yet. I couldn't see the results before the end date without voting myself, which I didn't want to do.. so I resorted to using a random number generator to help me decide which of my art ideas to use for this headshot!

I ended up not being able to finish THIS on time either, whoops. now that the poll is over, I see that Zhihao didn't get any votes.. but this is the only thing I could post today anyway! really, when it comes to deciding what to draw next, I do prefer taking your input over a random number generator. I will be using the poll results to help me decide how to prioritize my art ideas in the coming months! I'll make a more detailed follow-up post to the poll later because I'm super sleepy right now! if you voted, thank you ^w^ I really appreciate your input!
