Gentle Nutrition: A Non-Diet Approach to Healthy Eating

Absolutely 10/10 would recommend. It's from a registered dietician, has plenty of sources!

I can't summerize or even list all the topics covered. Here's just a sample:

Introducing intuitive eating, recognizing diet culture, the thinness obsession, the types of hunger we feel, what factors actually contribute to health, diet cycling, hunger cues, why BMI is BS, how to make small changes gradually, the effects of weight stigma and stress on the body.

And so much more.

It introduces so many concepts and issues we touch on here on the blog and questions people have about health and some fat issues. (Not every single issuse but it does tackle the health based fatphobic arguments just by the process of tearing down diet culture. Even mentions medical neglect/fatphobia. Other literature is out there on the full scope of fatphobia and its harms.)

I'm particularly interested in this section. I'm delighted by graphs and then the explanations for them!

Theres so much I want to directly beam into people. My primary complaint is I wish there was MORE advice for people with body cue reading problems. There is some advice but more would be nice.

I also appreciated this:

Im someone who has good textures and bad textures (mild compared to some) but ask me which ones and I'd be stumped because I tell you dishes I like but otherwise ??? So this helps me think.

While flipping through it I keep finding more things to gush about this really is such a good starting point because it will touch on so many weight and diet culture topics.

This is disjointed because this book covers so much I want to try and encourage peopleto check it out but my brain go Brrrr from excitement. It's not perfect, nothing can be but it's just so nice to have a book I can recommend that covers both what you want and doesn't shy away from the complex web of diet culture. It tries to met a new reader where they are and I just Brrrrr. You know?

For as long as you could remember, Levi Ackerman had always been your favorite fictional character. There was something about his strength, his empathy, and his kindness that drew you to him.

Then, one day, the universe delivered him on a silver platter.

It was midsummer night when you found him. There he was, lying in your new antique wardrobe, groggy and half asleep, dark hair tousled to the side. You couldn’t believe what you were seeing; was this really your favorite anime character, in the flesh?

Before you could think on the logistics of it all, however, Levi was already reaching for the small knife tucked in his boot.

And threatening you with it.

It all happened in a flash.

With your heart drumming in your chest, you remember fumbling for words, looking straight into those sharp, silver eyes you’d always imagined must shine like starlight (and gods, they truly did).

Looking back, your first words lacked a certain decorum. “Wh—who—is this some kind of skit, huh? Are you some kind of pervert?!?”

Levi looked at you then like you were a complete idiot.

As it turned out, Levi was not, in fact, a pervert, nor did he mean to end up here in the first place.

Instead, he told you the hard facts: that he was Levi Ackerman, Captain of the Survey Corps. That he owned the same closet in his office, only in his own world. That the last thing he remembers was falling asleep in this piece of furniture, an attempt to hide from Hange who’d been up in arms trying to convince him to help with an experiment.

Your reality, it seemed, was connected to the Attack on Titan universe through a mysterious wardrobe.

It was then that it was decided that he would stay with you until he found a way home.

A month has passed since this first moment, and to say that your daily life has been altered would be an understatement. You’re living with one of your personal heroes, after all—not that you let him know you view him as such.

Levi is trying to get back to his world, and in the meantime, Levi gets to discover your world: the joys of washing machines, the taste of matcha tea, the ease of hoovers, rock music.

And today, he’s uncovering the mystery that is the internet.

“I don’t understand,” Levi grumbles, his voice rough like sandpaper. Lines of tension form across his pale forehead, his gaze fixed on your laptop propped on the kitchen table. “People spend their time looking at cat... paintings?”

He’s perusing your blog.

“These are actually photographs that you’re looking at, but I suppose people also love drawings of cats. Cats are a very popular topic, see,” you explain, coming closer as you stop him from clicking on a sketchy looking pop up: ‘Free iPhone 15! Claim Yours Now’.

Levi's charged gaze follows as he watches you go about it; you have the thought he smells nice, like fresh linen and tea.

You clear your throat, withdrawing from his personal space. “Um... anyway, that’s not all you can do with the internet. People use it for all sorts of things: you can look up the news, the weather, forums…”

He crosses his arms over his chest, leaning back in the chair. “What’s that? Sounds like a disease.”

Ah, where to start...

“Forums are online spaces where people can discuss things. You can host debates, provide instructions, and more. Personally, I use them to gush about things I love. Like books!”

Levi clicks his tongue. “So, a bookclub?”

“Mm, yes, and no. Like sure, on the forum I'm a mod for, I love to discuss the plot, the characters, and the writing, but I also just enjoy goofing around with my friends and sharing memes.”

“Me...mes.” Levi looks puzzled by this word.

You stifle a snort. “Memes are like... jokes. Only sometimes, they're also cultural staples.” At his skeptical expression, you shrug. “I guess this world is different from yours, in that respect. We have... less immediate dangers, more free time.”

“That's not a bad thing,” he mutters, tone oddly soft. He averts his tepid gaze, looking back to your blog as he exhales through his nose. “But your world still makes no sense to me. Especially all of this.”

He nods towards the web page.

“It’s okay, the internet takes a while to get used to," you say. "Even for me... I constantly feel like an old crone whenever I hear all the lingo kids are coming up with these days.”

“Hmph.”

Levi looks unimpressed. So, forums—and the internet, it seems—aren’t his thing. Probably for the better—the last thing you need right now is for him to realize there’s a whole fanbase devoted to discussing his character (not to mention the other, less PG-friendly aspects of the conversation).

“Hey, how about we take a break?" You tilt your head, flashing him an easy smile. "You’ve been staring at the screen all morning. It can be a strain on your eyesight.”

Levi’s half-lidded stare crinkles, his lips pursing into a thoughtful pout, the same look he gets whenever you throw him scraps of information about your world and its strange customs.

“I was planning to make some tea,” you add, “want a cup?”

“… if you're making one anyway,” he mumbles, scowling in a way that reminds you of a grumpy cat. Cute.

You head towards your small kitchen, grabbing Levi’s favorite tea bag and laying out clean cups. As the kettle groans alive and you eventually hear that familiar sizzling that tells you the water’s come to a boil, another noise coming from behind garners your attention.

“Oi, something happened to your cat photo-thing,” you overhear Levi drawl.

You turn with a raised brow.

That’s when you notice that Levi’s somehow ended up on your desktop page, the familiar sight of your screensaver (more cats!) appearing into view.

But that’s also when you notice the mouse is hovering dangerous close to one of your folders... your babygirl folder.

Oh, no.

Oh, no, no, no...

“DON’T CLICK THAT!” you plead, attempting to rush to his side to avoid the embarrassment of a lifetime.

Too late. Levi has entered the folder and somehow managed to click on one of the more scandalous pictures; your peripheral catches his expression, and it's the most stupor you've seen on his face yet... and is that pink dusting his cheeks?

Because Levi is looking straight at one of the fanarts you’d saved of him months ago.

So i have 2 questions

Why do iris and perry have godparents?

The short answer for the first one is that , despite being best friends in preschool, when Perry and Iris reconnected in elementary school, it literally went SO BAD that they made each OTHER mutually miserable enough that they both got assigned godparents 😬😬

Perry IMMEDIATELY recognizes his childhood friend, but B-lining to HUG the school bully on his first day went just about as well as you’d expect ☠️☠️

This hug actually freaked Iris out SO much that is took him DAYS to finally get a good look at Perry, and when he did, well…. 😬

As much as I hate to torment my bby boys, Its still Peri and Irep- The two of them having ZERO communication skills is intrinsic to my characterization of them tbfh snsndndndndjdj ☠️☠️

LONG ANSWER:

I actually wrote some drabbles about these events! (mostly so that I wouldn’t forget them if I get questions that allow me to illustrate parts of them for the blog)

As for why they STILL have fairy god parents even after clearing up their hurt feelings and becoming friends again-

💜Perrys mom is often out traveling for movie shoots, and Perry’s Dad is very busy with his accounting job, especially at the end of every month- tho they used to spend every waking moment with thier little man, Perrys terrible habit of people-pleasing has led to him majorly downplaying how lonely he feels, especially now that his big brother and best friend Timmy has left for college, and took thier dog Sparky with them (something that Perry INSISTED he was fine with, despite being very much not fine with it at all)

💙On Iris’ side, if you directly ASKED him why he was deemed miserable enough to get a godparent (despite coming from money and having attentive, adoring parents) I’m not sure he’d actually be able to tell you himself! Between mod and readers tho, the reason Iris is miserable is that deep, deep down, he secretly RESENTS the role of “the scary kid” that his natural fangs and unorthodox upbringing have forced upon him, but because he’s always been SO SMALL for his age (my poor evil son was a preme, and spent much of his first few months in the hospital) he committed to the bit so hard he doesn’t even know HOW to be nice anymore, instead pushing ALL his peers away so none of them ever get close enough to see his flaws and weaknesses, because being “the scary kid that no one would dare mess with” is the only thing that makes him feel safe- despite how desperately he wants to be loved and praised by his peers 🥺😭

Astarion takes you to the clearing, and get to know eachother more, you tell him about your aversion to sex but your ability to have and enjoy romance, and it just…slips. He tells you he’s not much of a fan at this point either. You want to ask, but he’s sounds so vulnerable, like this is a new revelation, so you don’t push, instead the two of you talk about whatever comes up, whatever your interests are, and eventually his hand slips into yours.

When you’re yawning and your eyes feel heavy, he leads you by that hand to your tent, and pulls the blankets over you before bidding you goodnight and going to his own tent, surprised and happy and oddly enough, wanting more of whatever it was the two of you just had.

Astarion confessed his original plans when he tells you that originally he agreed to talk to you for the same purpose: to get you to care about him, to fool you into loving him, so that he would be safe. You’re hurt, understandably so, asking if the times you’ve spent together, all the late night talks, meant anything at all.

“Of course they did! Of course you did. That first night, it’s true I’d only planned on using you, but then we talked for hours and I found myself wanting more. I am back with more hcs ! I’ve been busy writing a fic . More John Doe hcs this time because he’s one of my favorites

He’s largely mute because of how the corruption’s affected him. On good days he can get a few words out if he really tries but most of the time he just sort of communicates in growls and body language . The killers have learned to interpret what he means

Sleeping on both his back (exposed spine) and his side (heavy spike arm) isn’t really an option so he sleeps on his stomach . To prevent himself from rolling over or falling out of bed (since he moves a lot in his sleep, partially due to the corruption constantly feeding him negative thoughts which probably lead to nightmares) the mattress just lies on the ground and is surrounded by pillows and things. Kind of like when a cat loafs because there was an old hc about him doing it on this blog and it’s never left my mind

Due to the corruption morphing parts of his body into something that mainly kills people he can’t really do stuff that requires the use of two hands. Which is very annoying and frustrating for him

He has a tail, some spiky spine things on his body (mainly his back), and sharpened claws on his arms (they have black scales that cover his hands but it’s covered by the corruption). This is a result of the corruption modifying his base code & model to have the code and parts of a “monster” so that John Doe can better kill people. As such it wouldn’t go away if his corruption was cured, because it modified his code and wasn’t just an add on or muddying his functions so it could take over as the primary host.

He loves having a routine. It’s easier for him to remember things if he does them consistently every single day. Unfortunately he’s not great at remembering himself a lot of the time so the other killers have developed a sort of daily routine which John can follow. He’s been remembering things a small bit better since they started which is progress. (He cannot remember rounds since the Spectre modified the corruption to be really aggressive during rounds so he can kill things better. This has a consequence of making him almost never remember what happens. The one good thing the Spectre has done and it’s unintentional/j)

Despite being largely taken over by the corruption, when he DOES have control over himself (largely during the off-time between rounds or during larger periods of rest), he likes to tease the other killers and annoy them for fun. He finds their reactions funny and if he wasn’t affected by the corruption he’d definitely be a bit of a gadfly. Before the corruption happened he was largely kind and sweet though he did have a mischievous side. After his corruption the old code largely suppressed his niceness but not the other part. He cannot speak or anything but the other killers Know when he’s being a bit of an annoyance for fun.

Hey there! I'm wondering how to describe mobility devices in a character's physical description.

At one point I was describing a character (he/she/they, cerebral palsy) I made for an applyfiction and I wanted her personality to show through everything in her appearance, including her crutches. He was a very chaotic and optimistic person, so I described his crutches as bright yellow and cluttered with colorful stickers when I got to the point in the paragraph where I wanted to include them. The focus was more on how the user decorated them than the actual purpose they served, which is the main thing I'm worried about. Eventually I ended up scrapping the character but the way I wrote the description still stuck with me and I wanted to check in here to see if it was okay. Was it acceptable to describe it in such an artsy way or was I making it seem trendy?

And where in the character description should we include mobility aids? Assuming it's only about a paragraph long, should it be at the beginning, the middle or the end? Do you know of any examples of authors doing this well?

Of course, it's 100% okay to decorate mobility aids! Some of my friends have painted theirs, added wheel spoke covers, put stickers on them, hung keychains and other little accessories, anything you can think of :) [smile face] They're a great way to show personality!

I don't mind at all if personality comes over the specifics of disability in this instance. That honestly feels like a nice neutral way of having a character who exists beyond their disability.

I would say put the detail wherever you feel it fits best. I'm glad you're putting a description of their aids in the character description; it can seem like you are using their disability for shock value if you don't reveal it early. If their aids a very noticeable trait--like this character where they're bright yellow-- it likely will come first.

hey mod, i have been following this blog for a while and i consider your posts to be a solid reference when making my art. recently, i saw a trailer for a new(?) game called wylde society. it is advertised simply as a cozy period drama with witchcraft. what drew my eye is that there are black people (and other poc) in it. the art style is cute and the game doesnt look like my thing, but i was wondering what you might think of it, if anything.

also its not really a question, just that ive been noticing a lot of fantasy period dramas on tv lately that include black people. i think we do in fact deserve to be in fantasy but i wonder why things like edwardian/victorian/etc society are so popular. its even one of my moms big interests, but she never really gives me a straight answer as to why exactly lmao.

It does have a cute art style! Google's admittedly only showing me like two pictures so, I can't make any judgments or anything like that. But it's nice that there are at least two Black characters!

The short answer: imperialism and white supremacy!

The summary of a longer answer: they're so popular because those historical periods have been deemed very important (and therefore interesting to know about) to the western white world, and the narrative its spent a very long time pushing on the rest of us. We talk about Queen Victoria, but how many of us can name all the leaders of kingdoms and villages she and her empire decided to invade? The sun is only gonna start setting on the British Empire in spring 2025. 2025!

I haven't even finished it yet (ngl it's easy to understand yet difficult to read for me) but Orientalism really is an amazingly thorough explanation by Edward Said of how the way we explain the world- from our history, to our media, to our people- has been extremely affected by the needs and end goals of the White Western Perspective (though the book focuses on that strategy utilized towards what we call the "Middle East").

And don't get me wrong- I adore me a good period piece. But I also know why we don't live in a world where "period pieces" aren't about the daily lives of royals of Botswana or Guyana or Chile or something.
