Namibia, Here We Come

May 17, 2024

3:45 AM came far too early. Neither of us had a decent night’s sleep. But we roused quickly, went into gear to organize and pack, and met the driver six minutes before the designated 4:30 pickup time. The drive the the airport was quick at that hour, and it was also easy getting checked in and through emigration. On the other side of security, our reward: coffee. We met a lovely Aussie couple waiting for the place and exchanged travel tips - us sharing info about polar bears and New England leaf peeping; them sharing tips for travel in the west of Australia.

The flight was easy, quick and pretty comfortable for the two hours to Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek. The airport is modern but tiny. Wilderness met us and escorted us to their private waiting lounge, where we hung out until our pilot arrived. There seems to be quite the focus on luggage weight, but since Namibia has a higher limit than our weight restriction later in the trip, we had no issues. Our pilot, Carien, arrived early, and given we were the only two passengers, we headed out early. A Sesna 210 with four of six possible seats got us to the dirt landing stip in Sossusvlei. The landscape was fascinating on the way. The countryside is quite desolate. Nambia is apparently one of the least populated countries on earth. We saw a multiotude of earth colored rocks, sand, earth, dried river beds, mountains, dunes in browns, tan, grey, red, rust, orange, gold, even a pink dune to be seen on arrival! The textures, from smooth sand to rough rocks to eroded mountain ravines, to table-top mountains, the landscapes is not quite moon-like, but not like anything we’ve seen before on earth. There were two drivers sent to meet us - one from Wilderness and one from andBeyond, our camp. We jumped in the vehicle of the first and not 30 minutes later we arrived in heaven. A small herd of springboks met us at the entrance, then a handful of oryx provided a greeting as we got closer to the lodge. The main lodge and 12 separate stone bungalows are built into the mountainside, blending with the rocks. Only the linear shape and top solar panels to incontrovertibly indicate that the place is man-made. The main lodge is spectacular. Elegant, comfortable, spacious. Some of the staff greeted us singing and waving. Jo, the main greeter, showed us around the lodge and gave us the overview, went through registration and activities. Everyone we met introduced themselves a shook our hands. Lovely. We opted for lunch before going to our room. Everyone from our butler to the head chef and sommelier came over to introduce themselves. The place feels really classy, but still somehow understated and warm. Lunch was delicious, a Salad for Sarah and Chicken for Jill with chocolate tart and sorbet for desert. The sommelier did a tasting of two white wines for us. We each picked a different one. A herd of ostriches provided some mealtime entertainment. Well, they were pretty sedate, but we laughed because their heads and necks blended into the sand, so they looked like big headless bodies walking around in the desert. We were escorted to our room/suite, which is quite spectacular. No detail has been overlooked. The stone walkway goes around the back of each bungalow building so each is very private with a wall of windows looking out across the private pool to the mountains and desert scape ahead. The room, of course is also in earth tones to mirror the outside. No sightings of the scorpions reportedly to come inside if we leave the door open - that will NOT be happening in our room! Yikes!

A nap was just the ticket before heading back to the lodge for our afternoon activity. Nothing like sleep to get one’s juices flowing again. We had signed up for the ATV outing, so off we went at 4:00 PM. Snuck a quick snack from the “afternoon tea” offerings and then met our group of seven to go out with Chicco. We drove across some flat terrain, then across what one could feel was sand and some rocky patches, then onward to where the ATVs were docked. We got “training” as far as one can call it training in ten minutes, did a test loop on a flat area, then off we went. Chicco told us to turn off our engines and Seb was totally clueless. Trainable? Well, sometimes. Lance, a fellow ATV’r walked forward and helped. It was a totally cool adventure. The dunes were beautiful, though at times one was so focused on not tipping over that it was difficult to appreciate the landscape. But when we would pause periodically, ahhhh. Again, it’s the colors and the light and the shapes that create a stunning canvas. The dunes were low-ish with scruffy grasses and half-dead trees here and there. And as the sun set, the scene changed and the quiet drama of the desert came through. The path (no true off-roading allowed) was curved with steep sections on which one had to gun the engines to get up. Jillebob, not used to exaggerated acceleration, had two foiled attempts, requiring rescues by Chicco, before making it on the third. Thankfully for her ego, there were others whose ATV jumped off the path or who got stuck half way up an incline. The straightaways were totally fun to go fast, the curves were scary as heck, as it felt like one would tip over! We had a few stops to take in the scenery and for a geology lesson with Chicco using the sand as a white (red?) board.

At the end, we docked (is that the right word?) our ATVs in the ATV-ports, and drove a bit to where a sundowner (our first in Africa Take 2) was set-up and waiting. Ahhhhhh. For Jillebob a gin and tonic (gin is big here) and for Sebbie a nice rose. People were chatty, and it was a kick to talk with fellow travelers about African adventures and beyond. There was a cute little jackal circling the sundowner spot, presumably smelling the appetizer treats.

In the front seat, Jillebob had a lovely chat with Chicco on the way back, getting an appreciation for the differences in culture and his transition from work in lion conservation to guiding. Seb was further back chatting with Lance. All in all, a very fun outing.

We chatted further with Lance and his wife Rebecca, and then were seated by the common pool for dinner. The stars above, it was lovely. Attmpted to gripe that service pool-side was slower than at the lounge level, we chilled in appreciation that ours are first world “problems” that pale in comparison to the experiences we had today.

Back at the room, our normal blogging, sorting through pics, and a quick shower before a welcome sleep.
