He looked to Corva, "When would we start?"

'Without creating a public outcry'.
There was a serial killer.
And the police wanted to keep that to themselves.
Corva wished she could say she was surprised. Honestly, that was about what she expected. Why bother trying to keep people safe, when you can just keep them quiet?
She did her best to keep her expression neutral. Aloka and Amaya had no such compunctions. Aloka clenched her fists, taking a step towards the officers. Amaya crossed her arms and raised her brows. The two women began speaking nearly in unison.
"Are you seriously telling me-"
"Do the people not deserve-"
"Especially when this is her second-"
"You know where she is!"
It was difficult to tell who was shouting what as they instantly went from calm to screaming at the officers

House of Spoils (2024)

House of Spoils is labeled as a supernatural horror film. Unnatural events take place, there are scary moments throughout but the conclusion recontextualizes so much of what we saw and is so tonally different from what came before that the label feels inaccurate. I’m not sure if a warning that this does not go the way you expect it to will make things more palatable for the audience but I’m going to try anyway.
Elena (Ariana DeBose) leaves her position as the sous chef in Marcello’s kitchen (he’s played by Marton Csokas) to open a new fine-dining restaurant in a remote location in the countryside. Her first efforts prove fruitless – all of the food spoils immediately. In a desperate attempt to meet the deadline imposed by her patron, Andres (Arian Moayed), she begins harvesting ingredients from the abandoned garden next door: a selection of strange plants the locals say was catered by a witch.
The film begins with a flashback to some time ago. Weird, ominous chants are whispered around a fire while a woman is strapped down and fed a strange little cake etched with a symbol. The mood’s been set. You know those lines mean something. The seemingly innocuous things happening to Elena confirm that by settling down in this area, she’s set herself up for trouble. The food that goes moldy instantly, the neverending bugs and the ghostly visions are not stress-induced; there’s something evil here. It gets you excited the way a good horror movie gets you excited. Our heroine is alone, she’s isolated and desperate. You admire her determination to open up her own business and move out from under the shadow of Andres, who isn’t terrible as far as head chefs go… but does make you wonder why ANYONE would want to work in fine-dining if the environment is that stressful and that toxic. The film successfully showcases “scary” aspects of the business too; the way a single critic can just throw your entire menu into the fire, how a single missing ingredient can derail an entire evening and the challenge of having to come up with a revolutionary menu out of thin air.
Another aspect of this film written and directed by Bridget Savage Cole & Danielle Krudy that’s intriguing is the food. In most dark food/restaurant movies, dishes look simultaneously delicious and grotesque to confirm the malicious environment. As Andres puts it when he sees what Elena and her appointed sous-chef, Lucia (Barbie Ferreira) have cooked up, his stew looks like it's been scraped off of a shoe. It's unappetizing. You know it’s a hint that what he's eating has a sinister origin. Only a spell could convince someone to take a bite.

The film’s scariest moment comes in a claustrophobic scene where Elena, locked in the restaurant cellar, is forced to escape through a tunnel that leads to a makeshift tomb. From there… any horror elements in the film vanish. We learn that while the garden Elena has been picking from was tended to by a sorceress… she was a good witch who healed people. So if there was no evil this whole time, why was the building's previous tenant driven to horrifying madness? Why does the witch’s ghost show up in the middle of the night to terrify Elena? Why all the bugs? Why the mold? This sensitive, female empowerment conclusion doesn’t fit the rest of the movie AT ALL. I suddenly had flashbacks of Andrew O'Hehir's butthurt review of The Conjuring, which complained about the depiction of witches as child-murdering, devil-worshippers. Is it possible the movie started off as a straightforward horror film but the writer/directors had a change of heart and hastily rewrote the conclusion to portray more "realistic" depictions of witchcraft? Maybe it was the opposite; it didn't have ANY horror elements at first, but they were introduced after the producers looked at the script and marked it as "non marketable"? Whatever the reason, this finale is a mistake.

I was enthusiastic about House of Spoils for about four-fifths of the running time. Ariana DeBose is likable. You cheer for her character and you're worried when she gets scared. Even if the conclusion comes out of nowhere, doesn’t make much sense and left me dissatisfied, I’m not sorry I saw the film. The parts that work are highly effective. The mismatched ending also works… just not for THIS movie. (November 15, 2024)

Part 1: Ary's favourite releases of 2023
Before you ask, yes I know that Mitski and Sufjan Stevens released albums this year! I'm gonna go ahead and assume they're already on a lot of other people's lists! However, if you think I'm missing out on YOUR favourite album of 2023, let me know. If you're thinking: "63 albums isn't that many, I wish there were more" - you're in luck because there's a Part 2. In the world of horror and thriller, the best films are the ones that stay with you long after you've left the theater or your living room. The one's that you can't get out of your head. An itch you can't scratch. The type of horror films that keep you awake at night. Hearing noises when there are none. Mistaking shadows for something sinister. And checking the shower when in the bathroom. A feeling that you aren't alone or safe. Director and Writer Osgood Perkins' latest film, Longlegs, is a perfect example of a movie that holds a piece of your mind long after the credits roll.
Longlegs is an unsettling procedural crime horror film playing in the same sandbox as films like The Silence of the Lambs or Seven. Perkins, however, has a distinct style that leaves the audience with a feeling of impending doom from beginning to end. There aren't usually happy endings in his films or a hero emerging triumphant. Longlegs doesn't stray from that path.
Set in the 1990s, Longlegs follows FBI Agent Lee Harker as she tracks down a longtime serial killer who leaves little to no evidence as it's slowly unraveled that a personal connection exists. Harker is played by Maika Monroe, who gives a deadpan performance that fits within the structure and story of the film. She is juxtaposed with Nicolas Cage, who plays the glam rocker-style killer and is all at once eccentric, strange, and disturbing. Alicia Witt plays Ruth Harker, Lee's mother, whose performance was vital to the film's success. The unraveling of the plot in the third act would not have been as effective without Witt.
Symbolism of the occult and the devil have long been part of horror film history. Yet, the occult has lost some luster due to its affiliation with a vast amount of possession horror films. With Longlegs and his earlier work, The Blackcoat's Daughter, Perkins doesn't attempt to make the satanic entity or demon a loud creature; instead, the evil is quiet. There is a theme of being controlled in Longlegs and The Blackcoats Daughter, as the antagonists are mere puppets to the hosts of evil they worship.
One aspect that increases how terrifying an audience will find Longlegs is how the film was shot. Using a variety of wide lenses puts a focus on everything on screen. There are minimal closeups, and in scenes where there isn't dialogue and a character is in a room by themselves, the visuals give the audience a sense of dread that something is approaching or about to happen. Both Perkins and the film's cinematographer, Andres Arochi, deserve credit for adding this element to enhance the film experience.
"One of the things that we always wanted to do was have an observational camera personality," Perkins said in an interview with YouTube film reviewer Sean Chandler. "The camera's never up in people's faces. The camera's always hanging back a little bit. In a wide space, using wide lenses and the idea behind that is just to put the audience in a place of helplessness."
Perhaps the most significant part of Longlegs' success came from its marketing. Not following the trend of having a trailer summarize and give away most of the film's plot and, in the case of horror films, kills, Longlegs used a breadcrumbs-style marketing campaign. The marketing, much like the film, slowly unearthed piece by piece minor aspects of the movie. Neon, the film's distributor, released teasers that were less than a minute. Each teaser played like a 30-second puzzle piece into the film's story, revealing just enough to pique the audience's interest. Some were more disturbing than others. The absence of Longlegs himself from these teasers only highlighted the less is more approach the film ultimately took. Whenever Longlegs (Nicolas Cage) is on screen, he takes over the scene, but he's kept away enough not to overindulge too much information about him.
"We don't need to see him, that's the oldest trick in the book, the audience's imagination will provide better than you can," Perkins said in an interview with IndieWire. "The idea ultimately was to say, 'Hey, this guy is obviously something you don't want to see."
For some viewers, what may decide if they love, like, or hate Longlegs may fall on its supernatural elements. In the film's second act, at around the midway point, the film introduces an instrumental portion of how Longlegs operates and how his killings are achieved. Perkins leaves the supernatural unexplained, leaving only small clues to the film's benefit. The supernatural component doesn't hinder the effectiveness of the scares in Longlegs, as most are based on the mood and atmosphere rather than jump scares.
Much of Longlegs's success is due to marketing, but credit must also be given to word of mouth. A slow-burn horror film crafted by one voice rather than a large studio is not often a box-office smash in the middle of the summer. Longlegs' opening is the biggest opening weekend for an original horror film in 2024 and the biggest for the studio Neon. Longlegs has received high scores from critics, and anytime anything in today's world is overly praised, it has to be brought down and humbled. No, Longlegs isn't the scariest movie of all time. It's a homage to serial killer-based crime films of the past with its own signature style.
The prestige and honor of being labeled a classic film is only earned over time. As time passes, Longlegs may well be remembered as a horror film that defined the 2020s. For now, it's one of the best of 2024. The execution from the marketing, the sound, the visuals, the framing, and the performances were all at a high level, setting the bar for the rest of the year.

Corva took a breath and let it out as slow as she could. She was absolutely fine. Aloka hadn't done anything other than what Corva had asked. There was absolutely no reason for her heart to be racing this fast.
She was fine.
As much as she wanted to shower in the hottest water she could stand and scrub her skin raw until every trace of disinfectant was gone, she knew better. She needed to be gentle and careful.
Her next breath came out as a sigh of annoyance as she reached for a washcloth and gentle soap.
"How are you feeling anyway? You've been through hell and back this last couple days."
"Eh, I'm alive. Atlas is alive....You realize if this keeps up you're the next up to get in danger?"
"Aw fuck your right, what do you think will happen?" Aloka asked mostly joking.
"Don't know, maybe start practice sparing again?" Andre suggested watching Aloka
"Against who?"
"Mom! Don't act like any of us have won since we we're kids and she went easy- why are you getting out Atlas protien powder? If you wanna make him something we got a couple hours before we can go over."
"Oh- with Corva's injuries she needs to stick with liquids so she asked about the stuff. But that is a good idea to make him something when we go back over. That reminds me you have...."
"Experience with losing a horn?"
"Yeah...other than magic issues." Obviously she had read up and studied all this but accounts were..helpful
"Well i don't how much will be the same, mine her amputated. Most of the pain was during the curse or when the horns were regrowing.."
"Right..."

When Andre has gone to thr RMRA and not come home she went to ask questions. She was told he was doing a stay in with no visitors. She believed it. When Corva appeared she had no intentions of blindly believing someone again.
Of course that was hardly the full story. She had already worked out that if she wanted to do something to him she wouldn't have brought him home, but that didn't change the fact that nothing about her or magic made sense.
Books on mages were hard to come by as they were one of the last magics to be discovered and the record keeping wave was dying off. That being said, the books she did have were consistent.
Mage's magic came from special (uncreatively named) mage crystals. Either forged into a staff or more modern weapon. Corva's magic didn't seem to need that, like a devil without horns.
But because mages are powerless without their crystal their were certain things even they could not do. Like shadow stepping...since the crystal wasn't a part of them the couldn't cross through. Cloaking was possible but the way Andre described it sounded more like melding with the darkness (granted that could just be Andre doing hos best to describe a situation and a magic he didn't full remember).
She didn't sound like a mage with a crystal and power from genes. She sounded like a witch. Castor's who spent years of the lives often just searching for another to teach them let alone actually learning the magic. It was a respected magic as you had to true want to learn and study spells and how they flowed through you to use them. Which brought the question and the reason she didn't trust the stranger.
Why the lie?
Aloka was snapped out of her train of thought by her boss. They had agreed that magical Exhaustion remedys were an exception since she called them our directly but were trying to get uer armour off with old fashined tools. Which of course lead to her boss asking her about using magic to bend the metal since it would let them move a lot quicker.
Aloka of course didn't have an anwser. She'd been out of residency for less than a year. But the weird lady talked to her and then she barked orders so now she's an authority making sure the whatever she is didn't die.
"Use low levels of magic to assist getting off rather than fully using magic like usual. Make sure someone is monitoring her at all times to make sure she's taking well to the Exhaustion treatment and that nothing bad is happened from the removal." She explained hoping it was the right anwser, she didn't have time to say she didn't know or explain that she barely knew the lady. She had to make choices and hope they were the right ones.
The worst part wasn't even about Corva. It was that she was needed here. So she couldn't go check on Atlas...
Just see doctors bringing in rags and horn tools, and she'd have to wait to see if he would have a stump or if the broken horn would be completely removed. Either way his magic would be severely weakened...or he'd be like Andre.
And that wasn't even mentioning the damn vampire. She had thought she'd recognized a shadow spike wound. Too bad she couldn't get away with smothering them.
Aloka really wanted to just fall apart and cry or scream or both. But that wasn't an option
Everyone stared at the three (four technically since Aloka was now part of this)
Aloka was trying to take it everything that was just said especially the dangerous part.
She was by no means anyone in charge, she'd been there less than a year. But when someone with obviously powerful magic gives you specifically orders, other people tend to let you take the lead, at least a little.
"You heard her! Get the long gloves and them to rooms figure out what exactly needs to be done. If she wakes up listen to what she says!"

CW: medical treatment.
Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, this is a fantasy setting, don't take medical advice from whump.

The three patients were taken off in different directions. Atlas was taken to the magical specialists; Andre was taken to be treated for shock.
The majority of the response went to Corva. The mage's unconscious form was quickly loaded onto a gurney and wheeled into a trauma bay. Instructions were called rapid-fire as the team worked to assess and treat her.
"I need two 16-gauge IVs started—"
"Get units of O-neg blood—"
"—broad-spectrum antibiotics—"
"—get a definitive answer from SOMEONE as to whether treatment for magical exhaustion is considered magical treatment!"
Aloka was in the middle of it all, trying to ignore her own conflicting feelings to focus on her job. One minute her brother is home, then the other one is kidnapped; then Andre and his so-called rescuer both disappear, leaving her and her mother to sit and worry. She had been so sure that this was proof that she was right about Corva, that the woman wasn't what she claimed.
A shadow mage? She expected them to believe that?

My Favorite Books of 2022
I think I did decently well at reading in 2022 and the book I'm reading now, I'm not anticipating finishing before the end of the year (it's The Stand by Stephen King), so now is the best time to post about my favorite books of the year.
This year, I read 80 books. 27 of those were the manga Blue Exorcist, and I'm never sure about whether to really count those in my book count, but I am going to count them as 1 big book for the purpose of this list! So, that takes me down to like 54 books.
So, let's go through my list each month, and pick out favorite book(s) from each month! Maybe I won't have a favorite from some months...
Bold means it was a good I really enjoyed! I
I'm going to hide the list under a keep reading line because otherwise this post might be too long for some people!
January
Dune Messiah -Frank Herbert
A Game of Thrones - George R.R. Martin
Memoirs and Misinformation - Dana Vachon and Jim Carrey
February
Mergers and Acquisitions - Dana Vachon
March
A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet - Becky Chambers
Everyone In This Room Will Someday Be Dead - Emily Austin
Diary of a Bookseller - Shaun Bythell
Call Me By Your Name - Andre Aciman
The Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller
April
I read nothing
May

Almond - Sohn Won-pyung
Human Acts - Hang Kang
Love in the Big City - Sang Young Park
June
Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism - Amanda Montell

July
Blue Exorcist 1-27 - Kazue Kato

Shadow and Bone - Leigh Bardugo
The Benefits of Being an Octopus - Ann Braden

Shoko's Smile - Choi Eunyoung
I'm Glad My Mom Died - Jennette McCurdy
October
IT - Stephen King
Mexican Gothic - Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Know My Name - Chanel Miller
The Last Magician - Lisa Maxwell
The Cat Who Saved Books - Sosuke Natsukawa
November
Carrie - Stephen King
It Ends With Us - Colleen Hoover
The Final Revival of Opal and Nev - Dawnie Walton
They Both Die At The End - Adam Silvera
A Wizard of Earthsea - Ursula K. Le Guin
Salem's Lot - Stephen King
Tokyo Ueno Station - Yu Miri
The Tombs of Atuan - Ursula K. Le Guin
The Devil All The Time - Donald Ray Pollock
December
Circe - Madeline Miller
Babel - R.F. Kuang
Taaqtumi: An Anthology of Arctic Horror Stories - Aviaq Johnston, et al
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid
Hell Of A Book - Jason Mott
Picking an actual favorite from these is too hard. I read so many great books this year, and obviously some months I read better than others. Actually, I would probably bold more than I have, but I felt bad about bolding more than like 2 per month, though I did do that in like September.
There were only really like 5 or 6 that I didn't really like, but pushed my way through.
I'm quietly aiming for 100 books next year, but I'm not gonna force myself for that, because whenever I aim for goals like that, it just takes the fun out of reading, so I'm going to set my goal at like 5 books and anything more than that is going to be a win for me!

If We Do Not Know Our History (of Dumbass from Our World Ends Up Somewhere Else) We Are Doomed
to say something stupid like, "...before isekai got popular in the West."
Just. I am laughing. This particular genre is/was wildly popular, and only briefly went out of fashion because it was "tired" and "cliche" according to critics.
More or less from the top of my head:
Night-threads, by Ru Emerson This is a series from the 1990s. Three people from Cali end up in fantasy setting
Sword and the Chain, by Joel Rosenberg this is a series from the 1980s Our Heroes are college students who a brought into a another world by a wizard (who lured them in via a table top rpg campaign that basically detailed the world they'd get dumped in.) When confronted by the reality of the slave holding societya they didn't have any problem with as a fantasy setting, they go a little feral.
Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever Stephen R. Donaldson: titular character ends up in fantasy world and spends a great deal of the time refusing to believe he's in fantasy land. First series ran in the seventies, second series in the nineties, third around 2013.
The Seventh Sword by Dave Duncan: This is another one where the character doesn't believe he's been brought into a fantasy land. At least he's easier to convince. This series is from the 1990s. Not a favorite! I think of this as being the spiritual opposite of The Sword and the Chain
Doomfarers of Coramond by Brian Daley: In which an armored personel carrier full of soldiers find themselves transported from Vietnam to a fantasy world. this book and it's sequel is from the seventies.
Witchworld novels by Andre Norton several of the books in this series involve people from Earth ending up in the Witchworld. This series is from the 1960s all the way to early 2000s, several books published after the writer's death, and many other writers brought into the project.
Tredana Cycle, by Joyce Ballou Gregorian, comprising "The Broken Citadel," "Castledown," and "The Great Wheel." Our Heroine is a girl (and later young woman) who keeps getting drawn into another world called "Tredana." The first time, when she's twelve, the next in her twenties, and the final time in her thirties. This series is from the seventies.
Mirror of Her Dreams by Stephen R. Donaldson Clinically depressed young woman ends up in a fantasy world. things go poorly for her, since the magic involves mirrors and for a change, the fantasy people don't think the person from the other world is real. (Not a great situation for a mentally ill young woman to be in.) If I recall, this one is from the eighties or nineties
Darwath Trilogy by Barbara Hambly Wizard recruits people from our world to help with entities known as "The Dark" which prey upon humans. This series is from the 1980s. I don't remember many details.
Windrose Chronicles by Barbara Hambly Our Heroine and another dude end up in fantasy world. Bad Horrible things happen, the details of which I'm fuzzy on. This series is also from the 1980s.
Spellsinger, by Alan Dean Foster, another series from the 80s! Our Hero is a college student brought to a fantasy world full of humans and anthropomorphic animals! His innate magical ability is needed to help fight the evil insect empire. Stuff happens.
A Wizard in Rhyme by Christopher Stasheff Our hero ends up in a universe where poetry makes magic and the major conflict is between Good Christians and Evil Mages who literally work for the devil. This series is mostly from the eighties and 90s and while entertaining, also causes me to twitch in irritation.
Lest Darkness Fall L. Sprague DeCamp A historian ends up in the past, and uses Historian Powers (no I'm not exaggerating) to change history.
The Amber Chronicles by Roger Zelazny I feel these books also count as isekai, though our protagonist is from fantasy world who travels to other worlds. (technically, his fantasy world is the only real world and the other worlds are shadows.) There was a series in the seventies, and a second series in I think the eighties/nineties. I prefer the "Merlin" set to the earlier "Corwin" set.
The Changeling/Madwand by Roger Zelazny from the 1980s. Our Hero was from fantasy land, from where he was sent as a baby. Meanwhile the kid he was replaced with is in fantasy land trying to start an industrial revolution, eternally frustrated by fantasy land's reliance on magic.
Dragonsword Trilogy by Gael Baudino This fantasy trilogy is basically a screed against Gor. This trilogy IIRC is from the 90s.
Dragon and the George Gordon R. Dickson Our Hero is not only in fantasy land, he is now a Dragon. I have never actually read this book.
Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoom books are an isekai, though more or less science fiction based. These were written in the 1930s. I have read many of the books in this series.
A Voyage to Arcturus by David Lindsay, from the 1920s. another more or less science fiction based isekai. I have only skimmed this one.
Do I need to mention the Chronicles of Narnia? by C.S. Lewis? Or his Space Trilogy?
There are others: this is by no mean an exhaustive list, just the ones that came immediately to mind. "Isekai" is a pretty standard concept in western science fiction and fantasy and by no means something that *isn't* popular?

Submitting Andre(Aka C.C/Cotton Candy) my shadow Devil
- Due to an issue with their horns they have little to no control over their magic
- weak to heat
- afraid of angels because 💫Trama💫
- Long fluffy pink hair
He's a pretty skittish guy due to having been kidnapped not one but two times, Horns are very fragile and breaking them would result in dead magic spilling and staining hair and skin.
Pretty compliant and gets a bad studder when he's nervous
Whumper keeps this one in a room that is always too hot. 80 degrees Fahrenheit on a good day, 100 when Whumper’s feeling bored. They make Andre wear angel wings on occasion and flick his horns. Not to do any real damage. Just to scare him a bit. And if they have any issues with their magic, Whumper leaves them in that hot room with the heat at 110 degrees. They know they can’t control it. But it’s still fun to punish him for it.
