MDZS x Firefly AU: A ragtag crew.
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#mdzs au#firefly#wei wuxian#jiang cheng#lan wangji#jiang yanli#Wen Ning#Wen Qing#nie huaisang#xue yang#A-qing#That's right! this month's flavour of MDZS AU is Space Western!#I recently rewatched the show and forgot that the lore essentially made everyone bilingual in Mandarin and English.#It's fun to hear characters talk in mandarin and now understand a little bit of what they're saying!#A Firefly AU fits them so well and I need to talk about it.#I have strong thoughts about my placement for all of these characters. Let's start with the most likely to be contraversial:#I think a less thought-out AU would pitch Wei Wuxian as the Captain or a Companion.#But there are a several reasons why that would simply not be the case:#Wei Wuxian is smart! He's good at what he finds a passion and interest in! Piloting is a complex skill that grants him a freedom to explore#He wants to kick back and chill! He would hate the responsibility of being the captain! That's JC's job!#In my heart he's also second in command - which does make WWX essentially Zoe and Wash smashed together.#Companions are also persons of high rank in this universe. Something WWX is very...not defined as.#Someone beautiful of higher social rank...someone who yearns for someone they want to explode in their mind...It was no contest.#I think there are a lot if really interesting things to explore with LWJ as a companion. Functionally they are similar to Courtesans -#But it isn't always about the sex - A Lan Wangji who sees himself only through the wants and needs of others -#is a really interesting angle I have been pondering a lot about.#Final thought to close up this long ramble: Yes. It is so essential that every space crew have a 'Weird Teen (girl optional) on board'.#Will I post more of this? Maybe! If people want to see more!

Love how Lumon is such a cult that Helena asking if her Father approves of her going back down and the Drummond guy saying "Father encouraged it." could either be a) him being petty, b) the Lumon approved way to refer to the Egan in charge or c) insinuating that he's Helena's brother (potentially a bastard? He looks older than her but she's next in line seemingly)
And we probably won't find out any time soon!

in a lot of narratives, hetero romance creates an amazing balance that serves to level some characters out with specific interplays. likewise, same sex romance (or vice versa) often amplifies instead to the point where it would realistically change the narrative/dialogue entirely and so has to be left out for scope reasons which is such a pity and part of what i was whinging about before.
(speaking about one character but with options i mean. like one romanceable character but the romance plays out different depending on PCs gender)
ive seen a few projects now where it's like oh. having discussed this, we just can't do it. Give the character one and focus on that or make it "game-bi/pansexual" but lose the interplay of gender completely and all the crazy escalation that often entails even in worldbuilds where there is homogenous gender equality.
wanting to create a depth that could have been or exploring off-the-beaten-path is a big driving force for me.

it's very silly but watching DDT has actually been really good for my body image issues. like it's silly because of course any one of these guys is ten times stronger than I'll ever be, it's not as if our bodies are actually similar, but a lot of them also have bellies or big thighs or are getting old or generally a bit softer looking. and I like them! I think they're good to look at and exciting to watch! so maybe it would be fine if I was also a big round guy with big thighs. maybe that is also good
#instead I've developed a complex about whether or not I could pass as masc well enough for dieno to kiss me#and whether or not I would feel like I was tricking him if I did#(= whether or not I personally feel like presenting myself as a man would be lying I mean)#this isn't going to come up it's just an angle on the thing that feels like it should be easier for me to answer than it is

This isn't really a question, but damn- you know you're getting popular when your ocs- which are unrelated to any fandom- is getting both fan art and an entire fanfiction dedicated to them.
I know, and I feel exceedingly lucky to be surrounded by such creative people. I love my characters dearly of course, but the fact that they're resonating this strongly with others as well is staggering. I can't thank you enough.
(edit: Maybe I should mention that if anyone ever feels inspired to write something about my dog boys, I'd consider it an honor. You can ask for my permission or advice if you're unsure but it's not mandatory. Just try to treat them nicely if you can? You don't have to adhere to their established canon, but don't publish anything you wouldn't want me to see. And send me a link please, I'd love to take a look).
#this isn't the first time my characters have appeared in written fiction that has happened on a couple of occasions before#but this is definitely the largest and most elaborate piece so far I did not expect this level of detail and complexity#and I'm not a writer I've never written prose myself so reading about them like this made me see them from a completely different angle#which was very inspiring#answered#mustaches-blog

imagine if i cared more about the holy roman empire which has a bazilion times more lore and reaources to learn about than my region of non-choice. I would be very insufferable probably.
#most of it is the aesthetics i will not lie#and they are “origin” of a lof of the teutonic and livonian efforts and culture and systems#and of course a big influence on them both thus an influence on lithuania poland bohemia etc#and austria which impacts hungary and the conteolled territories and also if we talk about hungary we cant not talk about ukraine#which ukraine we talk about also as part of the dutchy and as ruthenia and as the kyivan duchy already but more angles always fun#there are four “worlds'' to it and they all overlap in a way.#the epicentre that is a small shape between twuton prussia belarus and livonia#the larger circle that includes from north estonia to ukraine to hre#then the parts i simply like to think about but theyre not.. plot-pushing. Wallachia and finland and slovakia are in this#and then the world that exists and gets referenced but wont make direct appearances because of lack of relevance or my knowledge#parts of world that id definetely work on. if i had a friend from the place who knows Things and allows me to basically#get into things with always having a truth/false enthusiastic confirmr by side and we hang out and i learn intimately the history of Georgi#for example#bwcause now i know things but i dont feel like i have permission to put it in story. what if i do it wrong#i could expand my world properly into the balkans. there are characters from there and relationships not less complex than in the dutchy#turkey/ottoman empire as fuck too. But its just..#not.. relevant to any main character 😞#scandinavia i honest to god care little about as for anything much west of Magdenburg#as for whatll be russia. i know enough about what they did to latgale and about lake peipus moment and novgorod#and about the golden orde that i think im good on that front#the later wars with gdl/plc are just dates to me not any real... lore.

uncle iroh is predictably one of the characters I've enjoyed the most on my ATLA rewatch but I hope we never find out what happened to his son's mom. unpopular opinion maybe but that man's got some unchecked misogyny problems and with his family's track record vis a vis women, I can only imagine he fed his own wife to the royal piranhas or whatever bc she said his favorite tea tasted like ass
