You know what could have been a really cool AvEducation episode?

Animation vs Chess.

We've got Yellow on one side, playing the black pieces. He's the expert, all confident, technically the antagonist of this episode.

And on the other side, we have Blue. Blue knows the rules of chess, enough to play, but he is still a beginner. He will play against Yellow, learning bit by bit as the game continues.

They're in the void, and I think it would be cool if the pieces start out maybe the size of those games of "big chess", you know the ones. For the lawn or whatever. But as the game goes on and Blue falters, the pieces grow until they tower over him and it becomes much harder to get around.

I don't think Yellow would take it easy on him per say, but he might pause, maybe give little hints ("don't move or I'll be able to get you, quick take that pawn", that kind of thing)

Blue not only takes his advice, but actually learns, observing Yellow's own moves and imitating it. Maybe at one point, Yellow would give him a hint that was meant to trip him up a bit, but by now Blue knows enough to not fall for it.

In the end, I don't think Blue would be able to beat Yellow. You don't go from being a beginner to beating a master in one game. But Yellow is a good sport, and Blue wants to get better, so they settle in for another game.

The idea that shrimp see colors we don't has been debunked--they have more types of color receptors, but they can't combine them nearly as well as we can so they actually see fewer colors.

But damn did that misconception lead to a useful way to describe things that are otherwise impossible to describe.

Hi, magnificent Tracy! Congrats on "Stratagem"! Speaking of which: Mordecai lists off some chess strategies. I tried to google these strategies, but found information about only a few of them. Can you please share some info/links on the sources where it's possible to read about these chess strategies if they're real ones? Thank you in advance!

Thanks very much! All credit to the crew and the VAs who conjured it into existence! We went down quite the rabbit hole researching chess strategy and historic chess games for this, trying to keep it relatively aligned with the time period. At one point we even reached out to a St. Louis-based chess master looking for advice. (I guess the subject header of our attempted email correspondence - "Sir, we need your help for our angry cat cartoon" - was a non-starter for him, though.) In the end, we compromised on something in-between historicity and proclivity for silly names. Some of the strategies Mordecai rattled off are real things - Hammerschlag, for instance. Some are odes to real things. Dave C. stumbled on the Fried Fox, which is a real sort of attack in chess, and came up with Poached Penguin. Some are allusions to grandmasters of the past, like Savielly Tartakower, who wrote books on playing chess, and was generally a big deal in the chess world in the 1920s. Fable wanted to make sure we fit the very excellent word zugzwang in there somewhere. How could I resist? And there are a couple we just fully made up.

𓆩⟡𓆪 The first kiss will be on his terms. Somewhere in his favorite hideout spots, like the forest or near the ocean side. After sitting in comfortable silence, he suddenly leans over and plants a gentle kiss on your lips. This is his way of testing the waters, getting that final confirmation that you're okay with his advances. When you respond with a shy smile, he follows up with another kiss. Then another…and another…until it gets a bit heavier.

𓆩⟡𓆪 Learning how to kiss was easy enough. Hiei simply went with what felt right, and after a while, it became second nature. His slender fingers will tilt your chin at the perfect angle, keeping you locked in place. His lips are slow and firm. Any faster, and you’d be overwhelmed by his sheer hunger for you. Try not to whimper when kissing him. It’s the easiest way to rile him up, and he can kiss for hours.

𓆩⟡𓆪 He loves taking you by surprise. Seeing that dazed look on your face after he steals your breath away— priceless. You’re in the palm of his hands, unable to detect his next move. He can go days without kissing, and then one random afternoon, you’re trapped in a passionate kiss that leaves you in a total trance.

𓆩⟡𓆪 Hiei will never give in when you actually want him to. If you’re desperate for a kiss, you’ll have to take the initiative. Pull him by the collar and crash your lips onto his! He absolutely loves it and will probably smirk into the kiss. He also likes for you to outrightly ask for it (especially if you’re the shy type).

𓆩⟡𓆪 If you want to take the lead while kissing, you’ll have to fight for it. He’s a dom, but if you’re determined to overpower him, he allows it. He enjoys power play, but take caution—he doesn’t back down easily.

𓆩⟡𓆪 After every kiss, Hiei ensures that you’re satisfied. If your lips aren't wet and full, he goes right back in.

𓆩⟡𓆪 On rare occasions, Hiei will bring you to an empty room to sneak in a kiss. If you’ve been teasing him all day, then this is his way of shutting you up. Or, if you haven’t seen each other in a while, he might feel the urge to be alone with you. But again, it’s rare. Hiei has a good amount of self-control and patience. He’d rather wait than risk being caught by loudmouths like Yusuke and Kuwabara.
