Finally, he fought his way through the monsters to their source. The Shadow had dropped the monster forms, opting for an inverted image of... himself, simply as a younger man.

“Do you remember me?” Time asked, seeing the Shadow’s expression briefly become one of fear before it stepped back.

“Hero of Time…” Here, this monster stood, as if there wasn’t so much death and destruction on its hands.

“You know, I learned at a pretty young age that being angry rarely does much in my favor.” The doors to this chamber had closed behind Time. As the monster at the end of the dungeon, the Shadow would have power to re-open them, or to simply open another dark gateway, but instead, the creature was backing itself into the wall farthest away from him.

“It doesn’t help you deal with the root of the problem. It only makes you sloppy and act rashly.” He shrugged. “So when I admit you’ve got me pissed off…it isn’t an emotion I cave to frequently.” The other heroes, their struggles, their pain, plus the knowledge that this was all caused by this monster, burned hotter than Din’s Fire in his gut. He lunged for the Shadow, gauntlets grasping a handful of grey-black tunic and twisting to yank the monster close enough to hiss out the next words.

“First it was my descendant, the Hero of Twilight. You wounded him, nearly killed him, left him with his strength lessened by your curse. Then you and your cronies went after the others, my boys.” There was a surprisingly Hylian expression of realization in the monster’s face. “That’s right, those children you’ve brought into this game, are mine as much as the Hero of Twilight.” Family forged by their travels and trials, kids who he promised his wife he would do his best to look after. Of all the oaths to keep, that was the one that mattered most.

“No…” The horrified denial only served to make him even more angry. He threw the Shadow down, his strength enhanced by the Golden Gauntlets.

“Did you think I would not care? Or just didn’t plan on anyone making it this far into your little gauntlet. Did you not believe that any of us who remained would not take action to end your little game?” He drew the Biggoron Sword and look a swing at the Shadow, who at least had the sense to move. He swung again from the other side. He left it too open, allowed the Shadow to dodge away once more. “Bad luck for you, I’m the one who is left.” Maybe if he finished off the Shadow once and for all, the curse on the boys would be able to fade. It had laid two of them low already. Wild, and now Four. Between their wounds and the lingering effects of the shadow-curse left them with a fraction of their energy and strength. It had taken them out of this fight quickly. The others were nursing smaller wounds, less serious effects on their power but no one was unscathed. He drove the sword into the floor of the chamber next to him, drawing a frantic cry of alarm as he followed the movement by pinning the shadow to the floor for a brief moment. It fell into its namesake, reforming a short distance away.

“All you have done from the moment you actually encountered us is run. You claim to be seeking glory, to overcome us and conquer our homes and prove to the goddesses that their heroes are just as unworthy as any other, that we all give in to the evil within. But you don’t follow through.” The Shadow dodged, ducked, dove out of his sword arcs. He called Din’s Fire on a sweeping strike, the magic scorching the air and leaving the smell of brimstone and singed hair in its wake. “You revealed your form to the Hero of Winds. You let him leave to tell us. You taunted the Hero of Men with your boasting, but left him alive to inform us of your plans. You thought you had everything so well in hand, but you got cocky.” He would make this monster pay. He switched the Biggoron sword for the gilded sword and when he swung this time, steel met steel in a grating clash. He had weight, momentum, and power behind the blows and nearly knocked the Shadow to the ground once again before it melted into shadow to dodge.

“And unlike you, I have no intention of making that same mistake. Remove your curse from the heroes and I will give you thirty seconds to make your final pleas or prayers.”

“Please. I’m only the forerunner, barely more than a servant to the God of Demise. I can only do what I’m ordered to...” A dark gateway was summoned, and several lizafols charged through to his aid. These were lacking the Shadow’s power, and went down easily between a jumpstrike laced with fire, a helm splitter, and a mortal draw finishing off the last monster. “I take no joy in fighting any of you.” ...” The thirty seconds was well passed. Unlike his experience within the depths of the water temple, he had two other adventures with their experience--and tools-- still on his person. He pulled the Fierce Deity mask from his pouch.

“Enough of your lies...” The war god within the mask would be it’s judgement. This creature hurt those who are mine. I give him to you, Fierce Deity. He pressed the mask to his face as the wood seemed to heat in fury under his hands.

“Die.” The word echoed in the Deity’s voice as he gave over his control.

i love the way? you did the animation? if that makes sense. like the wiggly lines and such. it fits the whole Vibe where nothing really stops moving right. even with the like. background shots its never still and i love that.

the color choices too. i feel like most really impactful art (at least in this fandom) for me either uses very little color variety or a lot of color variety. obviously there isnt a lot of color in the animatic but i feel like that makes it more impactful as i said. especially with how the color changes in different- like, eras? in the beginning of the video, the lmanburg era, the blue fits very well imo. like the color of their suits is blue, it probably stands out most for me in the flag even. its just the color i think of when i think of lmanburg. and then when it switches to pogtopia, its red. Again, similar things to say, red is the color i think of when i think of pogtopia. other than brown i guess. and then the yellow at the end. like yeah this is still pogtopia technically but i feel like the color switch is very important. yellow is the brightest color used which is like. its fitting. fitting of his death- the flashy explosion, the theatrical way he went. and then the white in limbo. its only one scene but still. limbo is, well, a limbo. its bare its uninteresting its suffocating in it's blandness. even if c!wilburs limbo isn't particularly bland, if someones in the same place for 13 years straight its gonna get boring. and i think the use of only black and white shows this perfectly. AND THEN THE END. AUGH. when he's revived it switches from the bland white and black to using all the colors shown so far. which is, albeit, only five including white and black. but still my point stands; it's a great contrast.

NO im not done. back to the linework. i love how in each scene that features a character the lines like. emanate? i guess? from them. specifically in cwilburs case. in the beginning of the video the lines are straight and he's facing forwards. great cool yeah. BUT. when it switches to pogtopia the lines are squiggly and while there are some straight lines they are sporadic and a lot arent coming directly from or to him. ESPECIALLY when pared with the way you redrew each frame it just shows his increased mental instability visually very well. also he's facing away from the viewer instead of towards them which is a really nice touch im just struggling to explain why in words. and then in the first yellow scene after he blew everything up the lines while still sporadic, are a lot straighter and less squiggly. (and only coming from him, the center of everyones attention) while he's still Very mentally unstable, he's just as confident as he was during lmanburg. and in the end when hes revived there isnt any lines like there was before. it gives the same contrasting vibe that the color does. like waking up from a dream, if that makes sense

some other things i noticed. um. the fish in the river in the beginning. really liked that one. gave me a good chuckle after the 10th-15th watch when i noticed it. the transition from the burning flag to pogtopia is really nice. just all the transitions are great actually. and the timing with the lyrics is amazing. also eyebags thumbs up emoji. OH and when cwilbur is revived at the end thats the first time we see his eyes and i like that one.

theres probably more i could talk about if i thought about it for longer but i dont want to keep you here forever. sorry if im the curtains are blue-ing this but take it as a compliment if i am. okay byeeee

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!! im so glad you picked up on the color stuff omg i wasnt sure anyone would outside of it just being the lmanberg flag colors!!! i wrote a whole poem a few years back about red yellow and blue and how they relate to cwil! yeah the blue in lmanberg is based on the suits, and also that one line ghostbur had about lmanbur crying himself to sleep every night! and red for pogtopia is from tnt and the phrase "seeing red"! yellow was originally revival, supposed to represent the sunrise and like a new beginning, but it worked better here as nov 16th, as more of a final blast of light that burns itself into your retinas.

and :DDD SMILESSS im so glad you like the lines!!! i spent so long messing w different patterns and line weights for it, and im pretty happy w how it turned out :D

also soo glad u picked up on revivebur being the only time we see his eyes/ when hes in full color/ no lines around him!! to me at least his revival was like. picking up the different pieces of himself and reconciling them. realizing that every part of him IS still a part of him, always will be, and hes gotta figure out the way forward.

Captain's Log: 12/28/2024

Hello and long time no update! I'll make something more general about the project's Overall Status at some point but for now I just want to talk about the past two days! Long post incoming; I'm a yapper.

In the wake of taking some time off (sort of by force--I made this crazy schedule for myself for the break where I'd be working 55 hours per week on my various projects, thesis included, and then just Couldn't Adhere To It at all in the slightest) I finally returned to Fish Bird yesterday and sat down with my dreaded animatic.

I had four-ish minutes that I liked from way back at the beginning of fall, and seven minutes of gorgeous scoring to pad it to and rework it to be more artfully cut. I hate making animatics, Storyboard Pro infuriates me, as does my own inability to draw fast and accurate to what's bopping around in my own head. These sorts of tasks usually loom in front of me until the last possible moment, because I'm afraid of starting things that might turn out disappointing (something something RSD etc etc). But I put my big girl pants on and I got to work...

...and I actually made some shit I really like! It is by no means perfect, but it is by every metric the best work of this nature that I've ever done, which speaks volumes to my learning-by-osmosis through grad school. I've cut the whole score and story up into nine sections, ranging in length from 1 minute and 11 seconds at the longest to 19 seconds at the shortest. The sections are pretty arbitrary, it's just where they make sense in my head.

I gave every section a witty little title for my own amusement, and I'm taking them one at a time. I'll pick a section, grab the time stamp and plot points from my notes, and listen to that cut of the music on repeat. I'll make scratchy notes and search for references until I can watch the snippet of the film in my head with the music playing, and then I go in and add/cut/retime my boards until the partition is complete.

So far I've knocked out four of the sections, totalling to about 3 minutes. If I can keep pace and do another 3 minutes tomorrow, and then the final minute plus any transition smoothing on Monday, I'll have a fully functional draft to pass around and get some notes on before the semester starts back up again. This kind of seems like a nothing update but I swear it's a big deal to me. I don't usually enjoy animatic-ing, it's my well-known Least Favorite Part of filmmaking, but (knock on wood) it's really been quite enjoyable to throw my ideas around and pick at the framework I already had in place. Woooo !

it has a good tight following, longtime fans, all that. and, internally, the loveable, previously one-off goblin character fartbuckle is beloved.

limited edition fartbuckle plushes, custom die sets on their site of greens and whites and browns that are named after him, buckets and buckets of fanart, animatics, you name it.

then.

it comes time for the final episode of this season of their campaign. the “kids” have kids of their own coming soon, weddings, political campaigns, hell, even eddie and the boys are about to start a short tour.

the episode airs.

fartbuckle the goblin perishes to save his friends.

screams of sorrow are heard across the land (fandom).

“fartbuckle happy… fartbuckle save friends…” is repeated like a mantra for a solid week. but again, only internally.

until!

one of the lovely followers of the campaign that has regularly been making animatics for the fun, sad, stupid-ass moments of the campaign, makes one of fartbuckle’s death to the brand new song lithonia by childish gambino and it EXPLODES

fartbuckle is EVERYWHERE on tiktok in a matter of HOURS.

eddie (on a plane) is oblivious to this until he lands and his phone explodes with notifications.

the channel is getting more and more subscribers by the minute, people are linking his video on twitter and @ -ing donald glover like crazy, other people on twt are talking about how they found corroded coffin through the d&d channel and they bought tickets to their show nearest them..

and eddie has no fuckin clue what to do about all this.

so he just decides to say “R.I.P. Fartbuckle.” just before launching into the first song at the first show back to raucous applause

later that night he finds out that on their respective stages, at the exact same time, he and donald had both said “R.I.P. Fartbuckle.”

the meme dies after that, but hey, at least corroded coffin got some free publicity and some new fans from it

I've been watching Game Grumps compilations lately, and one bit I watched where they kept losing a turn each round made me imagine Sun Wukong and Macaque playing the game too and gradually going insane as they keep losing. I especially love to imagine Wukong leaping off his couch in frustration and yelling "I'm out! I'm going to check my email, this is f@#$ing garbage!" while Macaque is wheezing with laughter XD

Oh man it’s been ages since I’ve seen any Game Grumps but yeah I absolutely love that dynamic.. totally suits Wukong and Macaque too, at least the way I like to imagine them back when they were still friends. I think I remember someone made a lil animatic of these two with game grumps audio a while back but I couldn’t find it again sadly :U

(How I Learned) How To Read Irken: A Guide

Okay, I’m finally making this post. 

If you’ve been following me for a while, you might have caught on that I can read Irken. When I started, I was completely confused over wether or not I was teaching myself correctly, how long it’d take, et cetera. But I’ve finally hashed it out for myself, and I thought:

Why not make a guide for anyone else who wants to learn but has no idea where to start? 

So that’s what I’m doing. Some disclaimers, though:

- This is what worked for me. It may or may not work for you, I’m not sure. I think it’s a pretty good method, though.

- Reading Irken and Writing Irken are two different skillsets. I’m gonna show you how to do both, but don’t worry if you’re better at one than the other. 

- This will probably take a while of daily (or near-daily) practice to learn. It’s not impossible, it’s not super challenging, but it’s not super easy, especially if you have memory problems like I do. (For context: I started in September. But I also have a really shitty memory so, like. It might take less time for you.)

Okay! Let’s do this!

First off, you’d probably do well downloading the Irken font for practice purposes. Messing around with it and typing in it is fun, and can help!

You’ll also need a notebook. It’s not required, but having it all in one place is super convenient. (And, if it’s tiny enough, you can carry it around whenever, and also have it on hand to whip out at cons.)

The first thing I did was write each individual letter over and over and over again. This is what’s at the start of my notebook, and writing the letters over and over helped me remember which were which. I also had to focus pretty hard on what letter this actually was, this is tedious as hell but it’s not something you can do mindlessly.

This is what my notebook looks like. Don’t worry about those simplified versions of the letters yet, but you’re gonna wanna leave room for them. Don’t worry about learning simplified/handwritten until later, it helps recognition if you really have to focus on actually drawing the letters, at first.

(And yes, I know my pen is really smudgy. And that my H’s suck.)

After this, three letter words are your friend. Pick just, common three letter words you know, and write them down a lot. I have just, the Irken for “THE” written in the margins of my class notebooks a TON. Once you feel like you can remember that word well, go onto another 3 letter word with a different set of letters. Recognition = good, so pick something you like, use all the time. 

While I was doing this, I tried to string together Irken letters I knew into like, coherent phrases. I was very bad at this at first. Acronyms are your friend here, lmao. (I don’t think I can count the number of times I’ve written ‘u r a qt pie’ in my notebooks.) It doesn’t matter what you write, just that it makes coherent sense. 

There are gonna be some uncommon letters that are gonna be hard to practice, like W and Z, off the top of my head. For Z, that was easy. I just wrote ZIM over and over and over. For W... I used UWU. You laugh now, but the absurdity of it cements that I will always recognize those two letters. 

Four letter words are also good. (Please, absolutely write “FUCK” over and over in order to remember letters. I encourage it.)

There is also the absolute cuntwaffles. Y’know how in English, b, p, d, g, all look kinda the same? Yeah, Irken has that too.

The I and Z don’t look that similar now, but good luck without a translation guide. By this point, you should have memorized a good chunk of the Irken alphabet, and be able to recognize some others when you see them. If you’ve been writing common three- or four-letter words, it’s likely you’ve been using letters very common in the English language. Which brings us to our next stage, and the actual fun part: 

READING! 

You’re gonna want a translation guide on hand in these early stages, you will need it. The main goal of this stage is to read anything in Irken you can get your hands on- but start small! Fanart with Irken in it was a godsend to me. It’s not that long, so it’s not overwhelming. I did need to look up some letters at the beginning, and I read really slowly, but that’ll change quickly if you keep up with it! The specific fanarts I used are:

@inimoose​ ‘s The Last Irken comic, specifically chapter one: part one, and chapter two: part two have a lot of Irken. But I’d recommend reading the whole comic; it’s good!

@paketdimensioncomic​ ‘s page of lore for their comic! Spoilers, though. Again, I’d recommend reading through the whole comic, because it’s just that good. 

@xryn-art​ ‘s Linguistic Au’s first comic has a good chunk of Irken! The other comics do have some, but it’s all translated. Still good practice, though, if you wanna... read them......... ;) ;) ;)

It will not effect everything in your browser, and it can be toggled on and off, so don’t worry. If you really want, you can download a separate browser to change the font of, and leave your normal one be. It’d be convenient if you could, since having your browser font be Irken is inconvenient if you need to use Wikipedia, like, ever. 

Here’s a guide for that, for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer for some reason. You’ll see four options to change, I just changed all of them. Not every page is going to have Irken on it, though. For me, Wikipedia is all in Irken, and so is TV Tropes. And some Tumblr blogs (PAKet Dimension’s is one, just in case you need a reason to go back there ;)) But it might be different for you. 

Whatever it is, now you have a nice way to practice. I read Wikipedia articles on stuff I already knew about (so I wasn’t completely lost and could figure out what letters I didn’t know were from context clues,) but not a page I’ve read before in recent memory- you might just be recalling what the page said, instead of actually reading it.

And about the absolute cuntwaffle letters: yes, this will help you in recognizing which are which. Seeing the letters in context is always going to be much more helpful than just, a bunch of meaningless squiggles floating in the void.

At this point, I personally am much better at reading than writing Irken. It’s one thing to know a letter when you see it, and another to recall it and write it down from memory. Right now, I’m trying to write song lyrics and dumb little phrases in Irken, to improve my writing skills. Again, nothing too long, don’t overwhelm yourself. This sounds stupid, but Vines are good. When I don’t remember a letter, I just leave it blank and look it up after I’m done. 

Another thing that helps is having a friend to practice with, or someone to just give you Irken phrases for you to translate. 

Once you’re around this stage, you can try to learn simplified/handwritten Irken. You can also try to learn it before this, I started it around when I started reading fanart for practice, it’s up to you. This guide is a good starting point, but you don’t have to follow it exactly. This is your handwriting, do what feels natural for you!

(Also, don’t even worry about speedwrite Irken. That has no place in this holy land and frankly I am scared of it.)

And that’s... pretty much it! Most of the process is just... practicing a lot.

Also, if you wanna learn Irken numbers, here you go. But start with letters first, worry about numbers later. These are never used, aren’t even in the Irken font, and three of them look a lot like those cuntwaffle Irken letters.
