Another question, I'm curious how heavily the 2D VFX was integrated and how much was done in 3D. The biggest spot I noticed was the final explosion in the what it sounds like climax as gwima gets exploded, but were the eye sparkles that happened in Rumi's eyes at big moments done in 2D too? (Big fan of the sparkles btw lol, very anime in the best way possible)

I'm studying 2D anim and curious how this new era of hybrid 2D/3D animation works from a production standpoint

there was quite a lot of mixed 2D/3D effects! that final climax shot of gwima getting stomped was animated by Xin Ju, who drew quite a lot of 2D effects that ended up making it into the final film! in some cases, lighting just used his original drawings, but for that final climax shot, he did rough drawings and then the fx department did their own pass with a mix of 2D and 3D.

gwima himself was also a mix of 2D and 3D effects. we animated him with rough 3D geometry, then a 2D artist went over our animation with a 2D pass and then the 3D folks did some more effects on top of that.

the eye sparkles were done using a tool created for spiderverse, that let the animators create publishable custom shapes that can be used by lighting.

i love this because it's just another way to see the hand of the artist in these shots because those shapes don't exist in the rig and were added by the animators.

lots of folks also used 2D to block their shots. probably something like 80% of the fight scenes in the movie were roughed out by Ryusuke Furuya, who is an absolute BEAST when it comes to action and fighting! he did a lot of 2D/3D hybrid blocking using blender

I want to learn how to animate, i have wanted to for a while, but i don't really wanna spend money on a app that may not even be a app that works for me and then i spent money for nothing or the app that costs money just is too confusing and the tutorials dont help, or the app is just wayyyy to over priced, do anyone who animates have a good animation app that they can recommend to me that is free, (that can color and allow multiple layers) also please, dont recomment Krita, I have already tried it and it doesn't like to work with my UGEE drawing tablet, even if i have tried to adjust the settings, it doesn't work, thank you! Edit: I have found a program, if you read this no need to tell me any more programs, i have gotten one that i really like!

this reminds me to ask. Hey, folks who get stuck with executive dysfunction, specifically movement initiation (like when you're trying to get up to, idk, get the ice cream you want for dessert)?

Can you do me a favor? Next time you're stuck, try wiggling your toes and then trying to Get Up To Do The Thing and tell me whether or not it helps?

I have some half assed ideas about why this might work revolving around the possibility of being able to use smaller motions to build up the dopaminergic tone in the striatum of the brain. That's a major structure involved in both motivation and movement, both of which dopamine interact powerfully with. And it does seem to be useful for me, at least. But I can't figure out if that's some internal belief thing on my end or something more generally applicable, and I would love some help figuring out if this is useful for other people.

Hey there! Congrats on the whole crew on movie being out. The whole thing looks absolutely amazing to look at 😍😍 I have to wonder, which part of the movie did you worked on? 👀👀

thank you so much!! the response to the movie has been so much more than i expected haha, it's awesome to see an original IP resonate so well with everyone <3

as a lead, i didn't get a chance to animate that much on kpop (though i did a few that i'll share when i can!). my job was more to help plan and set up sequences, help animators with notes and technical workflows, and overall organize and manage the team (alongside my fellow leads and supervisors!)

the biggest sequences that i worked on were the plane at the beginning ("how it's done" up until the fall), jinu pitching the boy band to gwima, the healer, the game show, derpy and rumi on the balcony, rumi and jinu's "date", the final climax ("what it sounds like" ending), and a whole lot more smaller sequences scattered throughout!

i started on the movie super early too so i got to help discover the hyper expressive faces and our design/workflow for those! it's been lovely to see folks specifically point those out, it's not often that animation specific stuff gets noticed on a non-spiderverse movie haha

Somethin I've noticed about your designs is that you've got a fair number of big boys (large, muscular, chunky etc.) but most of your female characters tend to stay pretty thin and lithe, with the biggest they get being kinda muscular.

Do you have any intention of adding some big girls to your cast?

I have a few! Though you're right, the percentage disparity is pretty telling.

To be honest, it's absolutely a weakness of my character design sensibilities, and I'm doing my best to improve. I really should draw more varied body types.

To look inward for a moment, I suspect that I'm experiencing a bit of a brain poison feedback loop. Drawing is, on one level, a leisure activity I do to have fun, and on another level a Job that do for Money. Both having fun and making money are important for surviving in the Capitalist Hellscape we all occupy.

When it comes to leisure, I obviously tend to draw inside of my comfort zone. I learned to draw by mimicking artists that I admired growing up and comic/manga art has historically not been great about body diversity. This then reinforces the feedback loop of mostly drawing one kind of face or body type. (in this case: cute anime girls) A common artistic bad-habit exemplified here in this Nozaki Kun comic.

Combined with the fact that being less practiced at drawing outside of my comfort zone, makes these designs end up taking more work to match the quality bar I have set for my work, this in turn means that it's more of a struggle to build up those muscles and bring those characters to the point where I'm happy with their design, which then makes that sort of drawing feel discouragingly like Work. Even if it's work that's worth doing (which it absolutely is)!

On the "monetary" side, I've built my audience on the characters I find easy to draw and so many of them expect/want me to draw more of that sort of thing. And having built an audience that desires that thing, they are often less engaged by things outside of that. Not to mention the economic strain of posts that do poorly will affect how much money I make in a given month.

This isn't limited to "bigger women" but a lot of MxM stuff I draw tends to do poorly in my algorithm, discouraging me from drawing more of it even when I want to! This phenomena is probably worst for folks on Youtube who are DEEPLY punished by the algorithm for daring to make videos outside of their established niche. ("You're a videogame content creator, how DARE you have an opinion on BOOKS")

This is all to say that I am grateful for you reaching out and expressing interest in seeing more variety and it's a good reminder to expand my artistic horizons a little more. Nothing is for everybody and there's definitely sections of my lovely audience who are underserved by these absences.
