everyone has to be a little less mean to themselves about not reading enough books. letting go of reading as a pride thing is the first step to relearning how to actually enjoy reading for pleasure again. it's totally fine to start with a novella or with a comic or with a field guide or with literature meant for someone younger instead of being mad at yourself for not grokking ulysses in a week. just vary your diet and you'll be good.

i'm a literature scholar, i'm the one who has to be strict with myself about page counts and citations. you all? do what you want, just read and have fun.

What's your favorite dc comic run and your favorite marvel run? out of curiosity

well i started with Red Robin (2009) and it holds a special place in my heart for how insane Tim is there (people who mischaracterize Dick and Damian and the Al Ghul's because of this run make me scream though), but right now i'm in love with Juni Ba's Boy Wonder, and i started reading through Cass' new Batgirl run (YIPEEEEEEE!!!!) so they're the only ones that come to mind at the moment. i need to make a list but i keep forgetting to write down which comics i've read/want to read/etc

obsessed with how in the book Boromir comes to Rivendell and tells about the hardships Minas Tirith is going through fighting an ever losing war with no allies but still doesn't come asking for more men, just for council. And Aragorn decides to tell him that the rangers have been doing the same thing but have a harder fight than he has in Gondor. Like stfu Aragorn let the man tell how he suffers without telling him how it really isn't all that bad.

bsd fic authors i understand yalls pain SO well right now why is it so fucking HARD to write dazai. like i have a whole fucking spreadsheet dedicated to tireless analysis i have done on my part so i can accurately characterize him but he is such an unpredictable and morally gray character that it's hard knowing his limits and boundaries and where he draws the line for himself.

Annotating tips:

whenever I read an article that's printed out I always mark the page. I remember when I was younger, a lot of people thought the teachers were stupid for saying it, but numbering the paragraphs helps.

I also circle words I don't know and then look them up and define them. even if they're words I know but don't use everyday, a simplified definition is easier to understand.

ill highlight things I think are important, if it's for an assignment then I highlight the answers for each question and number what question it's for before answering the question. (I answer questions at the end)

then I also summarize each paragraph. just to the right of it. so then I don't have to reread the whole thing. it should be a couple words if it's a short paragraph. or one full sentence if it's a long paragraph.

Question: is there a term for a fic that's... I'm not sure how to describe this, but it's in the form of an actual document within the setting? A bit like an epistolary fic, in that it's supposed to be something that a character has written, but not limited to being letters? Like... say it's an essay that a character has written? I've been searching different AO3 tags for ten minutes and I cannot find anything.

how do you find the motivation to write stuff, cus when my alarm to remind myself to write i just stand there like: 🧍‍♀️🫠

trust that i definitely struggle with this too. motivation comes in waves. sometimes i can't figure out if i want to write or not (or certain characters just don't want to be written).

a lot of the time, art block means that you're improving. you're noticing what you want to change about your art. and other times, you just aren't feeling good, or don't know where to start! whatever the reason is, it's not a bad thing, per say, that it's blocking you.

the best way to find motivation is to let your subconscious work on it for a little while and do something fun or creative in another way (like going to go get ice cream with friends, or drawing, or dancing, etc).

and always try to sit down to write. don't put any pressure on yourself. if you manage to get 500 words, that's awesome! if you manage to get 200, that's still awesome!! whether it's 0 or 2000, you're still technically working on your project.

putting yourself to a standard that you can't reach is gonna kill your motivation and your love for what you're doing. you gotta know what you can handle!! if you can write 500 words per day, or if you write 500 words per month, that's still you creating your art.

make sure you've got energy, that you're taking mental breaks, all that. write down what you've got even if you think it's so bad it should be thrown into the Mariana Trench and never see the sun again. you'll be able to come back to it with fresh eyes when you're feeling better!

overall: don't let yourself or anyone else take the fun out of your writing, and take care of yourself :)

Those of you following me may be aware that I’m trying to draw every room/area in Undertale for the 10th anniversary.

You know, just for fun, since I like this game a lot and have liked it since I was like. 10. and i’ve done a lot of art for it and putting it all together like this is a fun way to showcase both how insane about this game i am and how far i’ve come as an artist since i first got into it.

Well, I’ve finished the Ruins and this is my cry for help because i have No fucking clue how to format this. current iteration is a 1fps slideshow made in flipaclip which is… arguably watchable i guess but like. there has to be a better way. surely.

Well a good view into my process is I’m writing medical/icu/[redacted] injury purely on my personal experiences with medical facilities plus supplemental research for the some medical terms

And then on the other hand I spent a while looking up sexy repair man costumes so i could describe them accurately

Like for Freaky Friday I looked up flight times and schedules, and timezone differences so I could lock in the timeline, and I had Calla check and correct my NYC details so that was accurate but all their experiences in each others bodies/symptoms/thoughts were just written based on my personal knowledge and head cannons of the boys. For Evil Scientist I didn’t look up a single thing it’s was all made up and fun, which is the benefit of bonkers au.

For time loop I had just spent a long weekend in Chicago so that fic is heavily informed by my trip there, I too went to the basement of the Art institute and looked at all the empty miniatures!! I just looked up the actual names of stations and buildings and asked my friend if there’s any express trains that run through the loop (not usually, they are very infrequent!!)

So I guess I use research as a way to inform the narrative and if I don’t think it’s relevant or adds to the world building I leave it out.
