TOKYO MEW MEW REWATCH - EPISODE 19

Magari all'epoca lo slang era diverso?

Come fanno questi a respirare e parlare sott'acqua?!

Note posted April 10, 2020: the Arts & Sciences Projects website will be transitioning entirely to Tumblr as of May 1, 2020 due to our web host shutting down. We are posting images and texts from previous exhibition, events, and publications.
NEW STAND at Arts & Sciences Projects (New York) is our on-going series of temporary newsstands in New York (and elsewhere) presenting independently published artist and photography books, zines, and other printed media.
Classic New York City newsstands are rapidly being replaced by sleek steel and glass structures owned by global advertising company CEMUSA (based in Spain). Both large national bookstore chains and locally owned bookshops are shuttering their doors as readers have shifted to online outlets and e-books. As the publishing world faces increasing consolidation, newsstands and bookstores only carry what sells. Concurrently, we are experiencing a boom in independently published artists’ titles, as artists seek to establish control over the production and dissemination of their work. However, few, if any, of these publications will ever be showcased in the glossy stainless steel kiosks or on-line retailers because they are considered too niche.
Against this background of a shifting publishing landscape, Arts & Sciences Projects presents NEW STAND, a temporary newsstand in New York featuring independently published books, zines, and other printed media made by artists and photographers. Acknowledging the not-for-profit motive behind most artist-based publications, NEW STAND offers emerging and established artists an opportunity to engage with public audiences in an accessible, yet non-commercial platform. Publications will be on display in our New York project space for public viewing, but none will be available for sale. Individuals seeking to purchase items will be asked to communicate directly with participating artists and independent publishers, thus promoting closer dialogue between the public sphere and the realm of the artist.

Studio Q+A: Ansis Purins
Linework NW is at its heart a gathering of remarkable creators, editors, illustrators, cartoonists, and publishers who represent some of the best work that is being produced in these mediums today. Each day from now until the show we will be highlighting the amazing creators of Linework NW in a series of short interviews on their process and studios. Today’s Q+A, conducted by Kinoko Evans, will be spotlighting artist Ansis Purins.

Where do you live? I live in L.A. which is also known as Lower Allston, a village in what is considered as Boston, Massachusetts. I have both owls, hawks and frat dudes in my backyard. I am super excited to return to Portland after over 10 years.
Where does the majority of your creative practice take place? Home? Studio? Café? Other? I do most of my work at my desk in my studio. I often go to coffee shops in Harvard Square when I'm really trying to get writing or deadlines completed.

What are your favorite tools of the trade? My fancy Japanese brush pen is the best. I use a lot of collage in my work so I have a little case that sorts my vintage clip art by theme. (i included a picture)
Do you keep any posters, toys, artworks in your creative space for inspiration? I've been collecting Godzilla figures since I was 7 years old. I have them sorted by color in a huge case. When I look up from my desk, they are there. I sometimes sit right in front of them and just gaze at them all as they make me happy and calm. They also smell great!

What are you working on for this year's LineworkN I'm working on my next book "Magic Forest" which will be coming out from Revival House. I'm assembling promo materials and creating a sketchbook book thinger to sell. I'm also making some Catzilla silkscreen prints to bring to Portland (the prints are being made in Portland, ME as you read this
