@anulithots Ray's lack of infantile amnesia being the result of epigenetics is an interesting and tragic thought.

This is also one of the reasons the farm system seems ill-thought out to me from a purely pragmatic standpoint.

The demons have to have an understanding of this after breeding humans for roughly a thousand years and learning of the differences between demon and human genetic make-ups, on top of Ray making a point to cite how humans are influenced by their environment to back-up his reasoning about why they won't increase security if Norman ran away to avoid being shipped out. (To say nothing of how Isabella probably pettily considered this when thinking about shipping Ray at some point.)

Living in the kind of brutal environment that headquarters is for a decade would fundamentally change a person on some level, and we're shown the toll it takes on Isabella despite the iron woman persona she's built up.

So I question why at least when the candidates are pregnant the demons wouldn't want to offer better treatment and incentives to them, or at least a mention of this by humans or demons directly involved with farm management questioning it before being told by those higher in the chain of command that it's unavoidable; they're working within the confines of the time and resources they've given, or whatever reasoning they provide while the upholding of the status quo so the demon royalty can maintain their authority over the general populace can continue.

Qiao Ling joking about picking up a habit from her dad/ mom and how she's slowly becoming like them. The group laughs, there's something insincere about Cheng Xiaoshi's smile and the day goes on.

And then, late at night, Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang are in their bunk beds and Lu Guang hears that his partner keeps turning, unable to find a comfortable position and - even less - fall asleep.

He climbs down the ladder and makes hot tea for both of them and Cheng Xiaoshi follows him into the kitchen, because that's their little ritual.

Lu Guang doesn't ask why Cheng Xiaoshi is feeling uneasy, because he'd always tell him if there was something he needed help with.

And there, in the kitchen, well past midnight and illuminated only by a tiny lamp, because the big lamp hurts the eyes, Cheng Xiaoshi asks:

"Is it inevitable that we become like our parents? Am I doomed to leave the person that loves me the most?"

Bonus: Lu Guang's answer is a very affectionate "Idiot" and it's all Cheng Xiaoshi needed to hear.

Lu Guang has a nightmare, so naturally the only smart thing to do is to kick the bed, right?

Cheng Xiaoshi woke up from a nightmare and didn’t immediately fall off the bed. That was a bad sign.

He held his breath and listened carefully for the telltale signs that Lu Guang was having a nightmare.

Sure enough, there was quick breathing and muffled crying coming from the bunk above Cheng Xiaoshi.

Now, when Cheng Xiaoshi was having a nightmare, Lu Guang would stare at him because he ‘didn’t know what to do.’ Cheng Xiaoshi understood, but it was creepy. He also had no way of getting up high enough without alerting Lu Guang to his presence.

So Cheng Xiaoshi did what he always did when Lu Guang had a nightmare.

He kicked the underside of the bunk as hard as he could.

He heard Lu Guang sit upright instantly with a cut off yelp.

“Cheng Xiaoshi!” He hissed furiously, leaning over the side of the bunk, parts of his hair falling in front of his face. They looked damp with sweat. “What have I said about kicking the bed, idiot?”

Cheng Xiaoshi leaned out as well to gaze back up at Lu Guang. “Oh, I’m sorry, I must have missed that day in class.” He smiled broadly, knowing that the nightmare couldn’t be that bad because Lu Guang had immediately called him an idiot.

The slightly murderous intent behind Lu Guang’s eyes softened. “Well you’re here now, so no kicking the bed while I’m sleeping.”

He sighed loudly. “Lu Gua-ang, I’m simply kicking the night demons out of your bed.” He fixed Lu Guang with his best impression of a kitten’s eyes. “I meant well.”

Lu Guang’s face suddenly froze. It was a few moments before he spoke.

“I know. But mean well in a different way, please.”

“If you insist,” Cheng Xiaoshi said, knowing full well that he would forget about this by the next day.

Oh no, I just had an idea.

What if Lu Guang is a little hesitant with hugging Cheng Xiaoshi. Cheng Xiaoshi notices and believes its because Lu Guang didn't get hugged as a child/ or ever and hence isn't great with physical contact.

And that's correct, sure, but the reason why Lu Guang hesitates/ pauses is because whenever he sees Cheng Xiaoshi in his arms, he sees him bleeding out, on the verge of death. And is reminded that it's all his fault, that he's a hypocrite that can't even follow his own rules.

Link Click has ruined my life /VERY VERY VERY POS

so... Yes. I'm almost done with season 2, and here's some stuff I'd like to share with the class.

Some of this (like half the stuff down at the bottom) was made with the help of @anulithots! I (unfortunately) do not pay as much attention to Qiao Ling as I do CXS and LG

These lovable idiots are gay for each other in every single platonic/romantic way you can think of. They simply are, y'know?

Like you could tell me they're best friends. You could tell me they're best friends who kiss on occasion. You could tell me they're dating. You could tell me they are childhood friends and are dancing around the fact that they are so in love with each other (platonically or romantically). I will completely agree with you in any of those ways.

(just do not even think of telling me that they're just kinda friends. That is a complete lie and I will not tolerate it)

Cheng Xiaoshi has tripped getting up cause his shoelaces were untied, and Lu Guang fell right after him cause yes.

"Cheng Xiaoshi, wait- your shoelaces-" (gets up to stop him)

(my guy IMMEDIATELY trips and Lu Guang has to lunge to save him, but they both fall on top of each other like the platonically/romantically lovestruck idiots they are.)

(Qiao Ling comes over, very exasperated)

"Get up before the clients see you! All the customers will come and go and see this mess!" (She grabs some broom/stick adjacent object and whacks them both till they get up)

(Cheng Xiaoshi complains the entire time, stuff about 'no not the face!' and the a customer walks in. Show begins, etc.)

I have been trying for a while now and I a getting close! I can feel it!

Fav colour: still green. Specifically green like the underside of a maple leaf when the sun shines through. Though I also have a special place in my heart for literally any non-standard colour the sky turns (lavender, true purple, orange, gold, pink, azure, teal, lightning storm grey, snow-glow grey, that overcast white that is just a little too bright and so on...)

Sweet/spicy/savory?: I do like my sweets, but I always half the sugar. Every now and then I like a little spice but I am white and weak. (I did once eat for entire packets of admittedly weak wasabi to try to clear my nose during allergy season. It did work.) I love savory herbs and spices too, but in moderation. Migraines, ya know?

Relationship status: I need a boyfriend so bad. Please.

how do you find it so far??? do you like the writing style?? personally i love itt i find it oscillates between poetic and witty in the most delightful way. see picture below (i don’t know if you know her but one of my very good friends @holdmyteaplease sent it to me. and i CANNOT stop thinking about it)

one of my tips for THE ultimate reading experience would be to track flower symbolism and the frequency of it. you’ll make so many revelations. the way he ties flowers and the corruption of dorian together is MASTERFUL <3

also tracking references to ancient greek mythos/figures. it’s adonis. then narcissus. at some time in the book literal ANTINOUS is mentioned (if you don’t know who he is just. search him up. and also how his name was used in 19th century europe)

if you liked the wit — the critic as artist (wilde) [this is one of my all time favourite books btw], the importance of being earnest (wilde) + his other plays

if you liked the ✨gay✨ — the sphinx (wilde) [this is a poem], de profundis (wilde) [this one is a marvellous insight on oscar wilde’s trial, sexuality etc], maurice (forster) [it’s just gay and written around that time period, BUT it is a cornerstone of queer classic lit and was revolutionary for its time. think of it as the dawn to dorian gray’s dusk]

if you liked the themes of sin, excess and immorality — the secret history (tartt) [vibe and theme wise and also because it’s one of my all time favourites lol], crime and punishment (dostoevsky) [not done with this one yet and honestly vibe and writing wise they’re vastly different. but the themes are there]

Currently I’m only on like page 42 (chapter 4) so I’m not really that far in, but! As far as I’ve gotten, I do like the way it is written! I read some Sherlock Holmes earlier this year and although it is a nice book, I kinda found myself not being able to picture things really well…

the way you described the writing style is exactly the way I thought it was, with the descriptions of flowers and environments—and a lot of description of Dorian’s beauty and youth—to the dialogues between characters. The way they speak is more similar to modern day talking, albeit with older language. (Idk when it was written though, I’m just assuming sometime late 1800s?)

I like the way the characters personalities bounce off each other. They have so much bromance going on. ✨

I’m just like expecting one of them to kiss the other with how they all talk about each other

Also I had done a Uquiz by @holdmyteaplease a while ago I think, and the result I had gotten had recommended that I read The picture of dorian gray!

The flower symbolism seems very interesting, I’ll make sure to pay attention to it! 👀

I like all the themes you listed—I’m going to have a long “to read” list 😭
