daily koss #29: if we only have one shot… better make it count, right?

Since I started on the 18th of February, today marks the one month anniversary of me drawing these wretched old men every day!!! I wanted to make something special for it, so I tried my hand at a comic (even though I am NOT good at comics—dear god, paneling is so unintuitive for me that I ended up wrangling this into a webtoon format just to avoid it).

Despite the increasing level of render and polish on my dailies over the past two weeks, this is the first time I’ve really, actually tried to flex my art muscles and apply my braincells to a piece 😂 Here’s to hoping my work paid off! I have now, officially, moved from low-effort shitposts to real-effort seriousposts 😔

(Also, if you’ve never read a webtoon before, hopefully the long-scroll format wasn’t too jarring! >_<)

A meta aspect I love about KOSS is that Transformers is a multi-timeline franchise: Knock Out and Starscream exist across multiple different continuities, sometimes alongside each other, sometimes not. But they only really ‘work’ in TFP, despite them both having other characters as constants (Breakdown, Megatron). If this were any other world, and they were any other versions of themselves, they might not even have been coworkers—just ships passing in the night.

And yet, the perfect storm of random events led to them being in one thing together, with a compelling dynamic at that (even an entire episode that puts it on blast!!!). Sometimes I think about how, according to the TFP artbook, Knock Out was originally conceived as something of a counterpart to Bumblebee—another fast, pretty car, except a villain this time—but the writers ended up fleshing out his relationship with Starscream the most. I wonder what the thought process behind that was—did the devs find their dynamic fun to play with as well?—and whether the two would get more moments together if Prime wasn’t cancelled…

But I digress! The fact I discovered TFP in the first place is the cherry on top of the serendipity-cake; I never imagined I’d ever get into Transformers, but one impulsive ‘hey, what if we watched the new Transformers movie’ from Lacuna at 3AM in the dead of January changed the trajectory of my life.

I’ve always been really bad at committing to projects for over a month at a time—I often find myself burnt out and restless after only a few days, even. So to still have so much drive and inspiration to create fanworks—for KOSS, of course, but an assortment of other pairings and properties too��is such a novel and exciting experience. My tune may change at a moment’s notice (I can be very fickle), but for now I’m eager to keep scribbling on 🥰I already have something planned for the next week of Daily KOSS hehehe~

There was some discussion on the discord about how most "superhero fiction" gets tainted by the fact that there are such established things as "superheroes" and "supervillains" in these settings, and that this then taints everything about these pieces of fiction because wide swathes of psychology and character immediately get swept to the side. There's a flattening effect to that, I think I would agree with that, and anyway, it's well-mined territory.

So instead, you could write a superhero novel (or comic) where the entire concept of "superhero" doesn't actually exist, in the same way that zombie movies don't recognize the concept of zombie.

And I think that this would be interesting, but would also immediately introduce a few constraints of its own:

The timescale is relatively short. There's very few imitators, and not enough coverage/traction that people have started to say "hey, these guys are all kind of like each other".

The scope is relatively narrow, probably not more than ... ten characters? And they can't overlap with each other all that much. Maybe you can have small clusters that expand the cast, I guess, a recognized subset of the unrecognized superhero.

This works best in a novel, not in a webfic, because webfic loves to sprawl (and this is one of the best things about webfic).

So to game it out a bit, you have all these different characters, and none of them thinks of themselves as a "superhero". We're pretending the whole concept doesn't exist in this universe. We're making no sweeping generalizations about superheroes, because they're just not a thing here.

Instead, we draw from as many different genres and ideas as possible.

People aren't wearing costumes, there's one guy who's wearing a costume, dressing up like a mascot. Someone else is wearing a uniform. Another guy is wearing a disguise, totally different thing meant to protect his identity, nothing more. There's a guy who summons armor around himself, a guy that transforms, they have distinct individual powers that come from different places, there's nothing that unites them except that they come into conflict with each other. There's no ethos of superheroism or supervillainy.

Part of the idea is that you cannot sort these people into typologies, each of them is individual, except maybe there's a brother-sister couple in there, or a group of five super sentai types or whatever, because we also don't want to make a rule that each and every person is a unique individual.

I think there's a lot that you could get from this. Normal superhero fiction tends to have a lot of ideology in it, and here, because these people don't recognize each other as being the same thing, you have more room to move around. No one is doing things because it's expected of them, except the people who are, who are fighting crime because this is part of their family legacy, or the guy who's a space cop and this is just literally his job. There's greater room for intersectional discussion if you drop "superhero" from the vocabulary.

And it's much closer to what superheroes used to be, before the genre calcified and congealed, when everyone was just their own weird person with their own weird agenda. There is something fresh about that, I think, something that I haven't seen very often, a way of writing superheroes that tries to be in the genre by being outside of it.

I'm not sure I have any ambition to actually write something like this, but I do think that it's probably worth doing. (And I also imagine that if I had infinite depth of knowledge on superhero fiction I would be able to point to three specific pieces of media that did this exact thing.)

Bbg D-16 was the first one I did. I ate it up with him ngl. Gladiator fit is heavily inspired by his TFP design because they ate with that one.

Jazz and Orion look pretty much the same. I will say everyone else looks like a Victoria Secret model and Orion looks like a dog they picked up off the street. I redrew his face like 5 times I quit

MY SHAYLA. These two are my favorite children. Shrapnel is based on a rainbow stag beetle. If Shrapnel has no fans, I'm DEAD. He will be getting a purple color way but I'm saving that for later. I almost made Elita-1 way more buff, but my friend bullied me so blame them for the less buff Elita.

Then there's the heights. Elita-1 gets to be a (relatively) tall queen. Shrapnel is just a little guy compared to normal cogged bots, I love him sm. Anyways, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk <3

Cyberformed New York

How it went down, and the basics on how cyberforming works.

It happened out of no were, a loud boom and them a second later piercing burning white light, no warning no time to prepare, shit is now officially fuck and now everyones gotta adapt, if they want any chance surving let alone at stopping this from getting any worse. Because even if the first big change is over, whatever caused this is not gone and is still slowly shifting and warping things.

I'm not going to say how yet because I still plan on writing that fic, so I won't spoil the mystery yet, but you all are free to speculate. :]

To be successfully cyberformed and not become a metal statue or some kind of mechanical beast requires two things: a mechanical or electronic something that can serve as a frame, and so, so much luck. The human body is used to create the spark, and the process of transforming flesh into a spark often goes awry, sometimes for an identifiable reason, and sometimes for what seems like no reason at all. That's why you need that luck.

Full Cybertronian

Aka a successful spark conversion, the lucky few who get to at least keep their minds after cyberforming, where the body, essence, and life force are successfully converted into a spark.

What makes a successful or failed spark conversion is unknown to most; it seems completely random, but no human who has spent a significant amount of time exposed to Cybertronian has had a failed spark conversion. The reason for this is still unknown to the characters. However, for those who had a successful spark conversion and didn't interact with cybertonians before, there doesn't seem to be any clear connections as to why they didn't lose themselves.

Cyber beast

Failed spark conversion, most who get cyberformed end up like this, a lot of things can go wrong when converting fleshy meat into a semi eternal burning life force so over 98% of spark conversion fail

Any potential frame material being touched by more than one person will always end in a failed spark conversion, as trying to make a stable spark out of 2 or more separate beings almost always fails

Statue

Becoming a statue is the fate to befall anyone not in contact with something that could become a frame. No frame materials mean, well, instead of your body becoming a spark, it just becomes metal.

No amount of cybertronian friendship points can save you from this fate,

ramble of my scattered thoughts on the piece under cut as usual cuz i love talking 😋

This has been an idea I've been cookin for a while, and it was so cluttered and unlike any other ensemble piece I've made... and I decided I oughta do it anyway. I love Miku, I love Vocaloid, and I wanted to do something really ambitious and crazy for her anniversary. Crazy that she's turning her "canon" age this year TwT

I had the idea floating around since like, May...? And then finally started acting on it around June 18. I'm terrible with deadlines, obvious with how I can never make a silly birthday post in time, so I started wayyyy ahead to make sure I have some room to be lazy lol, especially with an idea as ambitious as this.

This was finished on July 12! So I had to sit on this for an annoying amount of time. Very difficult for someone like me who just wants to talk about everything I'm working on to the masses. But at the very least, that gave me the time to work on the draft for this post.

Here's some ~behind the scenes~ scribbles leading up to the finished piece!

Left is the chicken scratch plan i made in my handy dandy notebook (whenever things are getting real and ambitious, i always made a rough ROUGH plan in there. Usually I'd do a rough pass of the full thing, but this was too complicated for me to do traditionally. I majorly benefited from digital tools to make this possible). CyberDiva and CyberSongman were considered, but I ended up cutting them cuz I just didn't feel like drawing them sorry-- (just pretend they're off to the side. They gave Ruby and Clara the pizza lol). Right is the "final" completed sketch (before I decided to include Chika mid-way through coloring and VY1 and VY2 near the finish line). I started by drawing the main "groups" separated on a different canvas so I can plop them into the main canvas for easy rearranging and transforming. However I got lazy and ended up drawing everyone in the bottom right corner directly on the canvas since I liked seeing the big picture of everyone's positions. Y'know.

Almost excluded Chika! But I like her design so much that I just felt like including her last-minute. You win this time, Chika fans. VY1 and VY2 were very close to being cut! I added them when I began doing the banner and thought "eh why not". I figured their non-human designs would be pretty easy to include pushed back in the bg. Ik VY1 is more commonly associated with the fan design, but I referenced the hairpin cuz it was simpler and the fan looked very annoying to draw 😭

Sorry to the fans of many Vocaloids I had to cut because this composition was insane enough as is. I promise I wanted to include fellas like CUL, LUMi and Sachiko 😭 I will admit I was a little biased on who I wanted to include over others. Like, I don't normally care for Bruno and Clara, but I wanted to get some more international 'loids in the mix. Also wanted to stick in the realm of official designs and not fan-designs since, as much as I can appreciate those, are just a whole "wait who is that guy supposed to be" situation I didn't wanna deal with. I also did wanna include even more character references through the balloons, but they ended up being kind of ugly and overcomplicated the BG :,) (Oh, and while this was originally planned to be a Vocaloid-only piece, I did end up including Teto, Neru, and Haku 'cuz those are Miku's besties dude!!! They may not be Officially in the club but they're her girls and it would be criminal to not invite them to her birthday).

Anyway, this project marks the first time I've drawn a lot of Vocaloids. Lily, Piko, Rana, Yuki, Yukari, Miki, Maika, and many more lol. All of 'em I've heard or seen in passing, but now I actually drew them, and some have really cool and fun designs!! I got into a habit of drawing Merli after this since I just love her design for example. And I'll probably be drawing more lol!!

Oh and the last thing I'll add for now!! The cake is indeed made up of various song references!! I wanted to reference the "big four" producers, just absolute icons in Vocaloid history. The pink/black checkerboard is "World is Mine" (Ryo), the crescents on the side is "Rolling Girl" (Wowaka), the smiley faces is "Matryoshka" (Hachi), and the three hearts on the side is "The Vampire" (DECO*27, which is sort of a symbol of his whole Mannequin album tbh). I know "The Vampire" is a bit modern but I couldn't think of anything else off the top of my head. I'm a fake DECO fan I know 😔 "Matryoshka" was originally going to be referenced in the colors of the candles but believe me it looked like shit so I just went for something else last minute 😭

Miraculous Theoretical Reboot Concept Art—Lukagami

So I really wanted to post this Lukagami Art I made for my Miraculous Theoretical reboot—you know, the one with Emily as the Ladybug in it and fusion powers? No? Well, it is kinda half baked at the moment, but the it’s basically a rewrite with extra steps. (You know how Spider-Man has, like, ten adaptations? This is like an adaptation concept rather than a critical rewrite, if that makes sense.) And in this version of the story, this Lukagami ship is a thing. Now, Believe it or not, I actually like Feligami in the show proper—there’s a certain vibe to it that just makes it so entertaining to watch. And honestly, I get why the show didn’t go with Luka and Kagami as a ship instead, but I promise I thought about it a lot, and this just works better for what I’m doing.

For one thing, I reworked the powers of the dragon a bit—

And when I say a bit, I actually mean a lot. Completely new power set, weapon and miraculous. The power is a sort of Taunt ability that makes the user the center of attention, basically making it so that enemies can’t take their eyes off the user. Since the ability is less offensive now, and the user needs a way to protect themselves from oncoming attacks while other holders finish the fight, I gave her a more defensive weapon—a kite. It acts as a sort of shield/hand-glider/bludgeon, and just seemed more versatile and multi-use than the sword did. The miraculous is also now a hair spike instead of a necklace, with the reason for that being that I just wanted to add more variety to the miraculous pool, and there were already two other necklaces and a choker, so… why not, right?

Anyway, why would this affect shipping? Uh, it’s kind of complicated, but basically the dragon and the snakes power-sets just balance each other now. The Dragon can’t make any mistakes or it’s game over, but the snake can give the dragon a second chance. Vise-versa the snake is usually an immediate target for enemies who know what it does, but does it’s best work when it goes unnoticed, and the dragon’s power can draw attention away from the snake and allow it to do it’s thing. So they kind of just naturally fall into a sort of partnership with each other in that sense. Luka’s character in this version is all about passive observance and helping out on the sidelines, while Kagami is about standing front and center and acting decisively. They just work too well. So, yeah… I don’t know. I’ll probably draw more art of them together sometime so I can show y’all why I think it’s a good idea.

ENA thoughts & theory: on Theodora, the Bathroom, and Unforgiven Frank

[aka: historical events in uncanny streets, aka: I Think I Figured Out What Frank Did.]

Throughout most of chapter 1, it feels pretty heavily built up that the bathroom is some sort of force that works in direct opposition to “the genie”. it certainly felt malevolent to me; like it's something that’s replaced “the genie” in the minds and vernacular of the people of uncanny streets; perhaps a kind of corruption or overthrowing of its genie, and usurpation of the people’s efforts to seek it out as a sort of reprieve or authority. once you actually get to the bathroom though, it seems that this… isn’t actually the case?

The simple fact that theodora still exists in there and is perfectly fine and unharmed and surprisingly cordial if you manage to find her is proof enough there's not actually anything sinister about the bathroom, but the "angels" ena corrupts into when trying to mention a "genie" in prior conversations being the same things she transforms into when theodora begins to let her ascend [as well as seen during the icy ascension climb] ties the whole operation directly to theodora.

It seems that the bathroom is in fact actually theodora’s own design, and i posit that it exists as a front to deliberately obscure her name/presence + throw people off her trail. She’s not exactly trying to completely close herself off from everyone, but she does seem to be “in hiding” to some extent. this of course begs the question: why would a character who’s basically a lesser deity be in hiding?

Well, part of it is I think she just kind of got tired of attending to everyone's "aspirations" and whatnot at a whim.

The presentation of the bathroom as a confessional and the surrounding talk of things like “washing clean one's sins” seems in a pretty similar vein to what i’d assume theodora’s more regular duties are, based on her interaction with ena; cleansing, reflection, forgiveness, rebirth, that whole usual god-type jazz. it's all pretty handily represented here, and the whole deal of her ‘throne’ being a wishing well pretty directly parallels how one would typically 'wish' on a genie as well. perhaps she simply wanted people to put in their own work to solve their problems rather than continually come to her for everything.  Interestingly though, she IS still quite willing to help directly if you just come straight to her. like, the bathroom serves its own purpose if you assume that’s all there is, but there also seems to be a thing of "if you still remember the genie and/or have done the work to know she still exists and/or are simply diligent enough to search around to find her, you are welcomed to her benefits”.

It’s a bit strange next to the whole ‘burying her name and presence’ thing! If all she wanted to do was make people earn their forgiveness, she could have accomplished that just by making herself really hard to reach¹. But taking those extra levels of censorship...the general populace clearly isn’t the real problem here. she’s obscuring herself because of something else. something specific. something she would not forgive.

...so the frank spec was originally going to be a separate post, but after chasing the ideas in it far enough, i found the two wound up running right back into eachother. I am joining them unceremoniously with this block of text. He has a lot of shit to get through but i promise we will eventually wrap back around to the G͊̉̀Eͦ̿̓N̵̶͠Ỉ͂̏[BATHROOM] 

Frank…. Frank is an interesting case to be sure. He’s so calm and cordial, even to ena, yet he speaks of “past mistakes” and having to “remain unforgiven"? He’s the only character theodora is less willing to help out than ena too; she’s fine with letting your excommunicated ne'er-do-well wipe the world bare, yet she draws the line at showing mercy to frank? what did this motherfucker DO? My answer is uhhhhhh colonization, probably!

Right. So assertion #1 i have about frank is that the ship you enter and leave uncanny streets through belonged to him*.

This seems like too deliberate a line to just mean "i walked through the door on there to get here”. he's got a history with that ship. if it belonged to him, i have to figure he was also the one who originally crashed it into uncanny streets. He does refer to both ena and himself as ‘travelers’, after all;  i don’t think it’s just that the ship had always been lodged there and he just lived on it. ramming that giant ass thing in through the sands has already not got him off to a great start, but i mean that could have been an accident. You never know. maybe he’s just a bad pilot. No, the real problem, i think, is that after doing so he proceeded to attempt to harvest uncanny streets and/or remake it according to his vision.

frank has some very very strong and very very baffling associations with the wanderers. i don't quite want to say it's anything so simple/direct as "he created them" or "they work for him", but he has most DEFINITELY had some kind of hand [or robo-foot, as the case may be] in how they currently exist and operate. to be completely real i haven’t been able to makes heads or tails [or snakes and hippos] of all the NUMEROUS scattered clues about them in any sort of sensible or satisfying way, but… the barest overall gist is that the wanderers are something frank either designed himself or sought to harness, but doing so in the form presented here in the tapestries in his room was….not viable. As you can see, it’s a bit… incomplete there, compared to what we see in the game.

This… facility? In the secret area of the gutsy maze is connected directly to frank’s room, as seen with the respective doors + same brick texture between both, and the even same music as in frank’s room will play if you approach this door. obviously this gives him a pretty big tie to the production[???] of these things!

There are a lot of individual elements to the wanderers who are up and out there flying around uncanny streets: hippo, veins, snake, diamond, eye, ribs. The thing that drives me crazy is that despite there being so many places where these elements turn up individually or in groups, none of them are exactly complete sets, or presented in consistent ways, or seem to be from the same origin. this is a bit of a ramble for making only a tangential point but bear with me. The facility hits their 3 biggest features-hippo/snake/diamond, but don’t line up with the elements in frank’s tapestries-hippo/diamond/veins---which weirdly, the veins seem to be their own sort of free beings there???? yet seem to act as a binding agent for the hippo in the functional wanderers? There’s also the eye and the ribcage thing, which i don’t think turn up directly anywhere, but they are… let’s say, more crude and primitive structures/organs, that i might associate with, say, a fetus. those red and blue tendril veins are also notably present in that thing, and act in a similar sort of “binding” manner of ena “becoming one with [the orb]”. it's also those things binding the taxi driver’s heads but i’m gonna get too out in the weeds² if i keep going on about the wanderers' elements. 

the point of all this is to say that while frank seemed to have a partial vision/plan for what he wanted the wanderers to be, it seems to me that certain resources/elements/processes vital to them actually functioning were native to/only available in uncanny streets. And so I think he sought to take them for himself by force.

Look, the dude’s a big king head. This alone EASILY carries vibes of conquest, but on top of that apparently his mecha legs are also pretty handily lifted from the ED-209 mech in robocop. granted, i haven't actually seen robocop so i could be way off base here, but i feel like a police gunmech isn't exactly, uh, going to be a force for everyone’s civic benefit yknow. Not to mention the job listings refer to the wanderers as “enforcers”. He is a guy whose associations all reek of hostile takeover.

Thinking more on the wanderer’s purpose though…the npc’s call them wanderers in a general sense, but i wonder if they “wander” because they are searching for something. in their dialogue they report on finding various oddities:  

”A SEVERE BRAIN SIGNAL CAPABLE OF PRODUCING [UNINTELLIGIBLE] WAS LOCATED.” “A NEW PHENOMENON HAS BEEN DISCOVERED /// THE ENORMOUS EGG THAT HOLDS US ALL AS IN THE MOTHER’S WOMB”

a severe brain and an egg/womb, huh.

…I have a hunch they're looking for theodora. The brain thing seems the most indicative because there’s no other imagery or references of a brain in the game, and while the ‘egg’/’fetus’ orb thing is a good bit more nebulous, it IS the most direct connection we have to theodora currently. And boy those fuckers sure do love flocking around this "new phenomenon" leading to her.

It’s no secret that genies have massive power within and/or over the door they rule, so it would make sense for the purposes of colonization³ that he’d seek out something like that to gain access to or control, perhaps to further form the land to his liking.

Obviously, theodora isn’t going to be wild about all this. She intervened and ultimately stopped him, but not before his assault did some damage. 

this “broken palace” where the shattered theodora lies… i’d like to assert it was in fact formerly HER palace. I always did find that area weirdly serene and beautiful, in an out-of-place sort of way; it’s certainly a more natural kind of aesthetic i could associate with her were the bathroom not in play. Seems a shame to abandon it rather than rebuild, but…i believe that when frank launched his attack, she feigned her own death in the process of fending him off. The wanderers, too, seem to corroborate this:

“WE HAVE ISSUED THE TIME OF DEATH AT 2:04 P.M.”

She let him believe that this attack did in fact destroy her, to set up an eternal stalemate--that, by a cruel trick of fate, in his effort to take over by force, he’d also destroyed the way to accomplish his goals. That’s why he’s trapped there in the lost village now. Trapped with the ruins of his ambition, trapped with a dead god that provides no way to change the land he sought to conquer.

It is certainly interesting, when ena talks to the shattered theodora, that she very deliberately highlights she “can only keep you from returning” despite that having no real relevance to the conversation they were having. That’s all that remnant of her exists to do, and it’s keen on letting you know it. 

Meanwhile, the real and very much not actually dead theodora is far more into subterfuge and also still needs a place to live. So she simply made a new makeshift palace/hideout/base of operations, and… you guessed it. That's the bathroom babeyyyyy. That’s why you can’t speak of a “genie” in uncanny streets, and why no one there these days even knows what the genie is. she wanted something completely disconnected, unassuming, and censored so that she may evade the remaining wanderers, and so that word she’s still alive and in power and serving her people [even if more passively now] never reaches frank; forcing him to live with his guilt + the consequences of his actions, and/or just to set an example so he doesn’t try any shit again.

And that’s how we find things in chapter 1.

Going forwards, though… i do find this line interesting:

There are… certainly a number of ways to interpret this one⁴, but for the sake of this post, i think there’s a fair call that this line can mean “the pretense of theodora’s being dead” has been stripped away. It has got to be crazy to learn that you’ve been living a lie for the past however long, but at least he doesn’t seem too pissed that she’s been deceiving him all this time. Whatever happens, it’s nice that he’s not interested in going back to his old ways now that he’s free.

I accused frank of a lot of shit in this post, but i do really love the guy. it’s hard not to be endeared to a guy who’s accepted his punishment, but still commits to being better even though he knows it won’t absolve him. It’s hard not to be endeared to one of the only people who’s actually fucking nice to you. And of course, ena might also have her own history with him, given he’s a thing she thought of for her aspiration to theodora + how frank bafflingly uses the correct ‘ƎNA’ spelling of her name. There’s a lot about his past that i’ve tried to piece together here, but still quite a bit more beyond reach-at least at this this point in the game. I certainly hope we get to see more of him, and i get the suspicion there’s a good chance we will.⁵

Alright yes i’ll address the superscript numbers now. Because this was clipped together out of two separate posts that were Specifically About Frank and Specifically About Theodora initially, there are a few tangential points & observations that i removed from both broader topics to make it flow better as one throughline about uncanny’s history. They’re not substantial enough to merit their own posts so i’m just tacking them on down here as footnotes.

¹. i’ve seen a bit of questioning of why theodora allows the purge events to happen, and im gonna be honest chief i dont think she cares. If people are creating their own path to her that's not her problem, and by whatever metric the purge events are “illegal”, i don’t think she was the one to declare them as such. Now, the wanderers on the other hand….. VERY distinctly seem to dislike the purges. They were the ones to take the taxi driver’s head, and also seemingly what hurled that chunk of building into uncanny dark to try and prevent you from getting in [an echo of their murmurings can be heard before seeing it crash up from the below] Which i find so so baffling with everything else i’ve posited about the wanderers in this post! I don’t get why they would care at all, let alone try to stop it.

². For reasons i could not even BEGIN to guess, that whole underground gutsy maze area has EXTREMELY direct parallels to EVERYTHING frank has going on. The music and doors and brick texture as mentioned above, but it’s also got the same sort of water as in the broken palace, and wouldn’t you god damn know it, those are also both the locations where the pointing spirit guys appear.

Not to mention this is also where the wanderers decided to take the taxi driver’s head, and there’s also that strange priest in the underground vignette of ena with the lantern featuring a wanderer that leads with the snake’s head rather than the hippo’s…. Sincerely. What did they mean by all this. 

³. this isn’t even the first or only theme of colonization i’ve picked up in dream bbq. This is probably going to be its own post later but... Man… i dont know… i think it could mean something that she and frank both are similarly “unforgiven”, almost as if they may have similar crimes. I don’t think ena is actively malevolent per se, but she does seem…uncaring, and i could definitely call her complicit. paving the world over in homogenous grey, paving the way for “investors in real estate” and auctioneers to immediately move in once it smells “much more valuable” and to liquidate the remaining assets… her own being wrapped up in being a “salesperson”, the big fuckoff gun..... i dont know man....

⁴. the gut vibe check i had for this line is that it has something to do with that bit theodora says about "fears and hesitation will only betray [ena’s] true ambition” in claiming her aspiration. But like the “truth” of ena’s aspiration that frank sees is uncanny streets getting outworlded, and that seems…a bit needlessly sinister, that he’d call that “noble”. There is also an admittedly much simpler read in the lies and truth just refer to the directions from the green and orange pointing spirits. But like thats boring. that is simply too mundane to feel appropriate for this series.

⁵. chapter 3!!!!! 

Frank ABSOLUTELY has history with piero and is apparently on pretty good terms with him, which ena very much distinctly is NOT. but ena also seems to be on good terms– dare i say even friends with frank– so i think he’s gonna come in clutch for us trying to get us in the crowd door. Also apparently if you look at that painting in isolation it does have eyes. this isn't relevant to anything, i just wanted to share it 'cause it's neat.

This…does present an interesting case in that frank is not a guaranteed encounter in chapter 1. If you don’t meet him there, would he still be there for us later? And if not, what is there for the crowd door? Disguise? Breaking in with force??? Continuity going forward is something i think about a lot for dbbq; how each route leaves you with and without certain tools to use later. If you have the humanboard, you probably won’t see frank. If you see frank, you probably won’t have had the humanboard. Is the best option doing the quests for humanboard and then hopping in the river to meet frank? hell, you can even get out of chapter 1 with 'useless' extra inventory like the chocolates. will any of that shit be relevant later? Boggles the mind.

*For getting all the way down here i present you, finally, with an alternate offshoot version of this theory that leaves more questions than answers: The ship may have been frank’s… and theodora’s. It’s for sure interesting the ship is where the door is, and that frank likewise may have owned a door. it really could go either way whether the door was already on there or if it was added as a way for other people to come and go more easily once the ship became a, uh, permanent fixture of uncanny, but IF that door had always been on the ship…. It could have interesting implications for theodora, depending on how long she’s been the genie of it.  Particularly since there is a very fair read that the missing statue of her on the ship may be the same one that’s seen in the broken palace---they do have the same pink eyes, after all.

The only conclusion i’m willing to draw about this for now is that theodora may have also come in on the ship along with frank. Perhaps they could have been working together, at one point. This doesn’t change all that much about the rest of the theory though; frank could’ve still gotten power-hungry, and theodora could’ve clashed & broken ties with him all the same.

It could also have some interesting implications about where a door actually leads, and a genie’s powers in relation to that door and the area it’s located in, but, well, that’s more off the wall stuff that’s not really productive to think about right now. Perhaps in chapter 2 with the whole ‘inauguration of the new genie’ business…..

There also may be something to said about the ship having the same kind of stained glass as the orb; again with how the orb is a pretty direct association with theodora and how the wanderers seem to be drawn to it.

 I wasn’t able to draw anything constructive out of it, but it’s… it’s there.

My ducktales swap au

This is actually a remake of my old swap au from two years ago. The triplets are swap with Webby May and June, Della is swap with Scrooge, Donald is swap with Beakley, and Daisy is just Daisy. Although I won't show the adults in this post cause I'm still working on their designs.

In this one Webby is now thr biological daughter of Scrooge although I'm not sure if I'm gonna change that or not. She's now the brains of the group. Often takes charge and is a huge nerd. A part of the junior woodchuck alongside her sisters. Because she is no longer a clone her name is April here to match with her sisters' name.

She honest doesn't change much in this au because she was always really smart. Just in here she never goes into spy training. And isn't socially awkward. Although she still is very excitable and definitely takes up a lot more responsibilities as she now grows up with two younger sisters.

I quickly had a design for May but the thing I struggle was that since she is swap with Dewey she is now the guts of the group. So then I was trying to figure out her characteristics here while still trying to keep her as May. I already had April and June figured out but May I did have some difficulties with. And I still unsure with.

But I was thinking what makes Dewey the guts of the group? Obviously, it's his bravery, actions before thinking mindset, and impulsiveness. So then how could I transform that to May without her just being a second Dewey. Bc that's the difficulty of making this au. I don't want it to be a carbon and paste just with the characters swapping.

I want them to still be themselves just with their talents swap? I hope I'm making sense.

Also May and June don't have any actual personality in the show, I mean if you look hard enough you will be able to see what differentiate them from each other. But there still isn't enough to go off by besides fully analyzing the episode and vibes alone.

I'm not sure if maybe instead I should have her a reserve character who is the guts of the group not because she is really brave but because she grows to be brave? Or someone who doesn't care about the danger if it helps her write the next scene for her book or find the next landscape to draw/paint. Idk yet I'm still working on her character.

I originally just had June with a shirt and short but it looked a bit too basic compared to her sisters so I changed it a little. Making her shirt into an oversize sweater. And leggings underneath her shorts. I struggled way less with June compared to May. Because I already had this idea that with her being the charmer of the group. She would definitely use that charm for good and help convince many people into putting their money into charities.

Just like Louie she won't be a bug fan of adventures not finding how she fits in into this. Not being an action type of girl and would rather volunteer at the animal shelter.

Huey goes by Huey Vanderquack here. I didn't change much of his design. I just gave him the blue vest Webby wears. Donald is a spy in this au, so he finds Huey whole trying to stop fowl and takes him in as his own. Claiming he's his uncle and that his mom, Bella, is his cousin. A nod to how Della in the short film was Donald's cousin instead of sister, and her name was Dumbella.

Anyways, here Donald would teach Huey self-defense and instead of being Della's son, he's her clone. He is more socially awkward here as he takes Webby's fate of being in the manor his whole life without any contact with kids his age.

He is the fist of the group and is still obsessed with the jwg. He is the Webby to May's Dewey. And helps her find out what happened to her dad.

He is also overwhelmed easily, only because Huey is somebody who struggles with change and meeting three kids and his whole life now changing would definitely be a huge change for him, a good change, but still a lot to take in and adapt to.

Might as well make up for some lost time. Guess it’s time to share some of my most recent (literally the last 4 are JUST recent within a week or two).

1. The first image was inspired by an artist challenge on Twitter. I thought it would be fun to try it out with Young Xehanort.

2. I was listening to “God Help the Outcasts” from Hunchback of Notre Dame & was reminded of the cool art direction where Xehanort was in the cathedral in DDD. Thought it would be fun to give it more color & a somber atmosphere to it.

3. Someone on Twitter did a redraw of a scene in Transformers One with some Metal Sonic Characters. I don’t see how this could NOT be fitting for Xehanort & his other selves.

4. Reminds me of a scene in Dark Road…that’s really it, but I loved how it turned out!

5. Again, a moment in Dark Road where he sits on a bench & ponders to himself. I did something a little different this time & actually try to (hopefully) pull off lighting, especially on the skin. Even the pose was kind of a lucky shot.

6. Funny thing about this piece is that I was initially having trouble figuring out what to do with the background. Then it clicked how suddenly remembered Pocahontas, which was something I wanted to do for some time but had forgotten about it until recently. I really adore how the colors worked flawlessly & how fitting to make his flowing in the wind like Pocahontas…he does have pretty hair 🥰

7. Alright, one more scene related to Dark Road. I often think about how he allows himself to be taken by the guards just so he can face the Queen. The build up to it was so intriguing I couldn’t resist trying to draw it out. I have done some scene redraws & maybe I can share more of them in the future, new & old.

8. Have any of you seen the First Pokémon movie? You all remember the end credits scene with Christina Aguilera singing “Miracle” & there was a moment in the credits where the gang just chill in the cave while it was raining outside while the track plays giving you that unique feeling of nostalgia? Yeah, had to do it with the two goobers while I was listening to that song.

9. The concept is simple really: I watched the new Looney Tunes movie. I know that is a weird reason, but watch the movie & you’ll see what I mean. Grant it, this image I drew (by design) is meant to be chill. Trust me though, watch the movie & you’ll see what I mean. It is VERY SIMPLE I promise

10. Finally, my most recent as I make this post. I just really love the scenery of dark rainy clouds & light on the other side. Figured it would be fitting for this piece, especially with Xehanort.

ANYWAY, I hope to make it frequent to share my artwork here more often. No promises, but I hope this post at least entertaining.

sooooooo this is unfortunately destined to be a forever WIP. there are several things that need to be fixed, and all of them would require me to start from the sketch. given that the linework and flats are done, it's just not worth it to me!

but i still do really love this WIP. as ive said before, drawing tfp is so hard, and yet it is the continuity i draw the most LMAO. i just LOVE the character designs and how fluid they are. so many times with transformers, we get the same blocky shapes, but TFP really pushed the limits of what can be considered mechanical but also beautiful.

i love the greebling in tfp and i really hope i captured it with optimus' neck and chest in this. i mean, why is that man's upper chest so exposed!! my guy!!! you need to cover that shit up, they could kill you!!!!! its ok, im not slutshaming, i love the look, i'm just worried about the fact that you constantly go head to head with megatron and you have your internals exposed like that.

also, can we talk about how PRETTY soundwave is??? like for real, they didn't need to make it so hot. but they did, and i love them for that. thank you tfp artists and animators, yall did so much for the robotfucker community.

Fun fact, ive read almost every single english soundop fic on ao3. they are my roman empire. i think about them all the time. i think about the fact that both of them are archivists (in one capacity or another) and were forced into war. i mean soundwave chose to go to war (and i dont blame it, kaon was ROUGH), but at the end of the day i do truly believe that soundwave just wants a simple life.

GAAAGHHHH this was the first thing I saw in the morning omg tsym <333 dw I've got my mitts on and I'll get to cooking o7 I assume you're asking me to explain the theory? Which I'll gladly do. Very long post incoming.

Essentially, the general idea is that Yanqing is related to abundance in some way, be it simply second-hand association, or he himself being an abomination/denizen of abundance himself - I personally believe in the latter. While I've made art of Yaoshi and Yanqing in a parental dynamic, it's not something I see as a viable theory, so much as it's just a fun little crack theory. Yaoshi is more likely a passive creator than an actual loving parent. There's a bunch of different interpretations for what Yanqing is and how he came to be based on the little pieces of evidence found in canon. One piece of evidence is his blonde hair.

As far as I can tell, the only other blonde Xianzhou characters are Dan Shu and Luocha (Luocha isn't a Xianzhou native himself, but he was a part of the quest so I'm including him anyway), both directly associated with the abundance, as well as Yaoshi themselves.

Interestingly enough, Dan Shu has the same hair part as Yanqing, but that could just be chalked up to design cohesion and framing the face/mask, rather than anything meaningful.

Edit: someone pointed out to me that Dan Shu's hair was initially brown, but after joining the disciples, it turned blonde.

Edit: I somehow forgot to include Phantylia, who has blonde hair in her third phase, and even a hair part. There's also a disciple of Sanctus Medicus in a cell in the shackling prison who also has blonde hair. Every character I've found who has blonde hair is either a disciple, or canonically connected to Yaoshi

(I considered adding Hongling, the fanatic fan in the stands of the Skysplitter, but I think his hair might just be dyed, which isn't too crazy an idea for a stan. Still mentioning him though, since he's a really weird character)

If you look closely at Yanqing's clothes, there's a reoccurring vine-esc pattern on all layers of his hanfu. They can also be seen on his sword. It doesn't necessarily mean much by itself, but it's an interesting detail I and others have noticed.

However, I want to point attention to Yanqing's phone case, because it's actually super interesting, and probably the most convincing piece of evidence imo. Not only does it relay the vine motif, but that to me looks like a leaf detaching from a branch and transforming into a swallow. If the characters' phone cases are meant to reflect their personality/reference lore elements, then this is probably the most blatant in terms of potential lore.

Edit: the little decals on the camera lense are in the image of Yanqing's hair ornament, which happens to look like a pair of leaves, midribs and all.

Speaking of swallows, has anyone noticed that there's flocks of golden swallows inside the roots of the arbor? I only noticed on my second playthrough, but I haven't stopped thinking about them since. How odd is it that out of any other bird, the arbor has swallows specifically. Of course, Swallows aren't Yanqing's motif alone, as the wardance teaser silhouette's have what look like swallows in the background art, but I still think it's important to bring up, considering Yanqing is literally COVERED in them, from his ornaments, to his swallow tail-shaped coat tail, to his entire playstyle.

Luocha also has a line about Yanqing that, setting aside any theory-crafting, seems pointless. He has nothing to say, which, if he was truly genuine, what purpose does this line even serve? I can't infer much from the delivery of the other languages, since I have no knowledge on them or their social cues, but in en, the tone is very... discreet? It's just the way he says it is very off, like he's being dishonest. Too quick; too matter-of-fact; It's artificial honesty. I hope you get what I mean lol. I can only assume the va was directed to say it that way for a reason.

A passage from Yanqing's 2nd char story reads: "It's recorded in the military annals of the Cloud Knights how Jing Yuan came to discover the young boy, stood his ground against public opinion, and incorporated him into the armed forces. However, in the family lineage column, Yanqing's lineage was relegated to the category of unknown."

From Yanqing's 4th char story: "Some speculated that he [Jing Yuan] was cultivating an heir, others claimed he only kept him around just to use this kid as a secret weapon. Jing Yuan never offered a response."

Jing Yuan is really suspicious. Like, incredibly suspicious. Even more than Luocha. Yanqing is already known to be an orphan, but the lack of clarity over the details of Jy discovering him, as well as the fact that he has no known relatives in their database is very odd. Speaking to Jing Yuan's npc in-game allows the player to inquire about Yanqing's origin, but Jing Yuan's response is far from helpful. You'd think the man who decks out his Lieutenant in protective charms and locks, and who raised the kid from, at oldest, toddler years, would be a little more eager to spurge on about stories from Yanqing's childhood, but he instead chooses to dance around the topic and make light-hearted remarks about Qingzu's furphies. Obviously, you can't and shouldn't expect to get all of a characters lore in one serving, but revealing so little definitely implies a lot more, as we've seen with Luocha.

These details are the reason why, if Yanqing does turn out to be related to the abundance, be it a spawn of the arbor, or a creation of Yaoshi themselves, I believe that at least Jing Yuan knows and is keeping it all under wraps. Maybe the whole reason Jing Yuan assigned him as his aide in the first place was to keep a close eye on him. Rather ironic a general of the hunt would risk everything to protect the thing he's sworn to destroy.

But that's just my two cents. Thank you anon for giving me a reason to spurge about this theory finally, as it's become so dear to my heart.

I remember not liking him at all the first time I watched the show. But now watching it a second time years later, I think he's really not that bad. :0 In fact I don't know why I disliked him so much back then.

There are some parts about his character that annoy me. But most of that either is good character writing or isn't his fault. I don't like how immature he tends to be, but of course he's immature. He's still basically just a kid who hasn't experienced much of this war.

And when things get rough, he really straightens out and tries his best to be serious and obedient. Which is very nice to see.

Another thing that I don't like is how the phase shifter was kind'a overused. It became his signature weapon that he used to bail him out of everything. Smokescreen has demonstrated that he's actually pretty clever and slick, it would have been fun to see him trick or outsmart the cons more often instead of just using the phase shifter to save his aft every time. But again, this is not Smokescreens fault at all. Its the writers fault for making his use it so much.

And lastly, something that really made me like Smokescreen was the whole thing that happened with Optimus nearly dying. Smokescreen freaking out at the prospect of becoming a Prime felt really real. Instead of being honored and having and having an inflated ego like I thought he might for some reason- he was terrified.

And him panicking and using the forge to repair Optimus last second felt very real. I could really understand how Smokescreen must have felt, wanting to follow Optimus's orders and restore their home, but also being unable to bare the responsibility of being a Prime. Eventually dragging Optimus back to the land of the living and throwing away any hope of restoring the Omega lock.

If I was better at analyzing characters, I would have loved to draw a comic about what happens right after Optimus was repaired.

My first thought is Smokescreen feeling guilty and ashamed of having used the forge against Optimus's wishes. Would Smokescreen crumble? Fall to his knees, crying and apologizing? "I'm so sorry Optimus- I just couldn't do it-- I couldn't do it, I cant be a Prime- I couldn't-- w-we couldn't lose you.." Is that in character? Honestly I have no idea. 😔

I've thought about doing that for my lineless style, but I haven't gotten around to it.. 😓

What a jerk. I wouldn't be friends with anyone who goes around insulting/trying to upset people for no reason like that. Block them and don't accept/respond any phony apology they might throw your way. They knew they were being rude when they sent that message and deserve to be blocked.

But also- I would have no way of filtering out people for that private blog because how am I supposed to know who will and wont steal my artwork just by looking at their account? And when it did get stolen, I would have no way of knowing which follower did it-

I believe I've mentioned it before, but I didn't want to watch Rescue bots because its attached to Transformers: Prime <:/

Its supposed to be connected to Prime, but its rather baby-ified. The tone is much more light hearted, the plot of Rescue bots completely rewrites/contradicts the plot of Prime, Optimus comes back to life for no reason. Stuff like that.

Atm I'm only interested in Prime 😔

Man, if I had a nickel for every time Jeffery Combs played a character with some sort of scientist background and that had some form of contact with a green chemical compound that holds harmful properties to one body in a way, I'd have 3 nickels. Which isn't a lot but its weird that it happened 3 times. XD

As for abilities... uhhhhhhh the only special abilities I know that transformers can have is the warping thing that Skywarp does. I don't know of any other powers <:0 Maybe an ability to change into more than one alt mode..? So I could be a submarine and go underwater? Or maybe the ability to breathe underwater or something? :00

Typically I use references of realistic skeletons. But if there's a part of the body that I just cant seem to draw right, then I look up drawings of skeletons to see how other artists drew that part. 👍

do you think you would ever eventually draw a grown up version of jinx, lux and isha? seeing all the headcanons about them made me start thinking about how lightcannon would handle isha through her teenage/young adult years,,,,, like half of it comes from my desire of wanting to see lightcannon's dynamic as they become a bit more mature and their trauma/hurt is less raw? (if that makes sense? like being able to see them as adults who have grown to be a bit more grounded and secure 🥹) and also wanting to see what isha would look/act like as she grows up bc ... she was robbed of that in canon 🥲🥲🥲

btw i don't mean this as a request or me pressuring u to draw them !! i just wanted to yap about them bc im in my lightcannon + isha sappy feels 🫠

Aw, no problem, I've been wanting to get around to this anyway. I went back and did a rough character study and tried to keep as much of the same features in. However, I tried not to worry too much since this is essentially a transformation from child to semi-adult.

The inspo mostly came from my own hairstyle, I've got curls similar to Isha's at the top, but it strengthens at the ends and back. So with enough length, I sometimes put tiny braids in, so that's where this particular design comes from, of course, with some help of reference from chosen Pinterest images, too. I also wanted to leave Isha's imitation, I think she'd still want to copy Jinx's hairstyles once in a while and implement the same cuts on a smaller scale.

As far as maturity goes, I think they'd communicate pretty efficiently, but of course, to a degree for some needed independence once in a while and all that jazz. However, I imagine they'd also be a tightly knit together family, close enough that they'd want to always carry something around that reminds them of the other. I think for Isha, that's in the form of images and colors, so hair dye and accessories.

I see Jinx growing out her hair eventually, like a wolf cut style, because even I miss my long ass hair from way back when, but Iove the tapers, so a shaved side of the head would follow along. Lux would probably get the cut just shy of the chin and finally use hair dye for the first time. But I can't decide if she'd go as far as to get an undercut as well. I think Jinx would want some kind of trinket for them, so she'd probably go onto wearing piercings, and they'd follow the idea. So, yeah, just little things that represent one another.

These are just a very few rough drafts, I really wanted to draw them, so I'm glad you've shared your thoughts with me, it helped me push through to get something up and running.

Only critique I have towards this AU of yours is dark Sonic's characterization, I much prefer the idea that he has complete awareness of the things he's doing, making dark sonic this uncontrollable creature (exaggerating of course, I have no idea how far your dark sonic goes in the uncontrollable spectrum) kind of takes away what makes the form special to me, the idea that in this form sonic knows that what he's doing is the wrong thing but still enjoys it regardless gives a lot more nuance to the form to me instead of just being the basic "Naruto 4 tailed transformation" kind of character, idk how to describe it, it's been a while since I watched that episode, so forgive me if I got a lot of things wrong, I spend more time analyzing sonic himself instead of dark sonic. Dark sonic being basically if sonic let himself be more self-indulgent in everything he does to the point of basically allowing himself to go an a power fantasy and show off how much weaker anyone else actually is in comparison to himself makes the form really stand out from being just fleetway super sonic, but more silent, dark sonic is not uncontrollably attacking everyone on the battlefield, he knows how to focus those negative emotions on one target, he knows what he's doing and that makes him far more compelling than just being another Kurama-like character, cuz no one ever uses a "character that attacks everything and everyone uncontrollably" to it's maximum extent anyways, never get to see character like that maybe killing an ally, they always manage to get the character to stop before anything truly bad happens, no one has the balls to actually kill a character off like that... Oh well, I got off track, anyways don't let me rain on your parade tho, if you really enjoy the way things are right now let them be, hope you manage to tell the story you wanna tell.

Hi ! Thanks for your thoughts first of all, I always appreciate some feedback and suggestions from anyone! It is my first AU after all.

I think I did a poorly job describing Dark Sonic's personality in the AU, mostly bc I have drawings that will explain everything better. Sorry for taking too long btw! I decided to take a lil break from drawing since I was overworking myself.

I never said Dark Sonic was not aware of his actions tho, I think I stated that the one who's not fully aware of what is going on is HyperShadow, and that Dark Sonic is fully aware; he has his memories, he knows something is wrong, and he wants to go back to normal. He just simply can't, since HyperShadow has basically stole all his light energy.

Since he can't go back to normal, he is stuck following Shadow around since his presence calms him. Dark Sonic in my AU basically cannot measure his strenght, and lets his depressive emotions take over him. I see Sonic as a creature who is way too powerful but never uses his full potential bc he controls himself, but Dark Sonic is just a form where he can't do that.

Dark Sonic is sad, upset, impulsive, and lost. He is all the emotions Sonic usually hides nor doesn't like about himself, he can't think in a positive way, and he lets his emotions act for him.
