you made me ship shelliot so hard it's not even funny 😭 like normally im not super into rarepairs bc it seems ppl ship them just to ship them but i legit see where you're coming from, especially in the same context as your comic where their story begins after elliot moves in. i actually love your comic i cannot wait for the next part (not trying to pressure you obv). ive never gotten too many hearts with either of them but your characterization just feels so accurate like i feel like I could see your story with their dialogue happening in the game and it wouldn't feel out of place at all. and also finally (oops ive been rambling), your art style isn't overly detailed but the facial expressions/body language/like perspective i guess of the characters, especially shane and elliot on the dock is so well done, the small changes in positioning work so well to communicate the change in their body language and its just really impressive.

please do tell the max yuki thesis I BEG

this whole thing was borne out of anatomy of a champion, max's docuseries from 2022 which goes into his relationships with his family and also features a lot of yontent (yuki content). honestly i opened it to check that the scene i was thinking of was still there but got sidetracked for like an hour. there were obstacles to my research. but anyway

so max and yuki are honestly kinda similar people and they tend to balance each other out a lot better than anyone gives them credit for! they both like to laugh, they have kinda crass childish senses of humor, and they spend a lot of time together doing media for red bull, often without their teammates. i think we were all blinded by yukierre when yuki first joined the team because their dynamic was so strong, but ever since pierre left it's been more and more often yuki max. it's fun and people like it: they both like roughhousing and swearing and playing around with weird cars, and it's just generally good tv.

in 2022 pierre was out of alphatauri, yuki was partnered with nyck de vries (remember nyck de vries?) and max was shooting anatomy of a champion. 2022 was also the year yuki was sent to mandatory anger management class, and aoac brings this up multiple times to 1. show how stupid all the drivers but particularly max think it is, 2. point out that max has gotten a similar reputation for being violently angry when all he really wants to do is drive, and 3. segue into the fact that jos has an extremely well documented bad temper and has acted violently toward many people throughout the course of his life, including his son.

you'd expect the scenes between yuki and max in this to be kinda fun and silly, and they sort of are? but there are also these weirdly heavy introspective moments where yuki is watching jos come out to greet max or max is staring unblinking into the middle distance while yuki talks about his anger management classes. and again i read into EVERYTHING but you can kind of see where the comparison is drawn, that there's a recognition between their two situations. they're both so similar to one another and so different to their shared reputations that it's a shock anyone got it so wrong

but yeah anyway

yuki is now in his 5th year at red bull. he's been in the family with max literally a few months less than daniel and max were in it together, which is wild. in a way he and max have had kind of similar journeys here: they both were welcomed in by an older teammate who they were extremely close with but who then left, and they've been eating the replacements alive ever since. they travel a lot together, they do a lot of media together (and sometimes it seems like they put max with yuki just to get him to crack a smile or two), and they've both grown and changed a lot since yuki joined in 2021. they've seen the team's most dominant era, and they've also seen it enter the tailspin that's brought us to where we are now. i think it's easy to see max as the one who's outlasted all his teammates, the only one who can survive in that environment, the golden boy etc etc but. yuki's been in the red bull family too, this entire time. he's seen all the same shit max has and he's dealt with the team's racism and control on top of it.

yeah! ive been thinking about fungibility in art lately. and just fungibility more generally. because i mean, its so luxurious! its such a nice part of modernity, that you dont have to care about getting *this particular one*, you just need one of a plentiful thing. apartment hunting really emphasizes how much it sucks when things arent fungible. another example: while products a company makes are fungible, the companies themselves are not fungible! infamously with spacex, we'd like to no longer have to deal with elon musk, but we *can't* replace him (or at least, his company)

anyway, some art is definitely more fungible than others. but that fungibility is partially independent of quality, which is interesting. like i was talking about this with homestuck recently. there are a lot of works *better* than homestuck but which are nonetheless more fungible, less singular. i think art that is nonfungible can have a value in itself, independent of its goodness, just from the knowledge that youre experiencing this thing that isn't like any other thing, on a fundamental level.

some thoughts, by medium:

paintings: except for a few tiny oeuvre exceptions, super fungible, any reasonably prolific painter has tons of paintings that are basically the same

poetry: ALSO pretty fungible, but not always, which is neat. i think the 20th century included a move away towards fungibility in poetry? like less towards pursuing a "type" and more towards pursuing poems unlike other poems

movies: a weird mix. movies are so big and expensive, so there's less of them. usually a director has a pretty small body of work. but because theyre expensive theyre also "mass market" and theres a lot of push to make movies that fit a fungible type. infamously, the movies companies want this badly, and creators are frustrated by it, because a good movies requires a certain unreplicable "magic"

books: tends towards non-fungibility, EXCEPT for airport books (romance, thriller, self-help, memoir, etc) which have a massive pressure towards fungibility, and achieve it, the point is more about successfully doing a type than being its own thing (but it has to have SOME novelty, or its boring)

music: i think like 90+% of music is very fungible, but once music becomes remotely "weird" it rapidly becomes not fungible at all. like you don't even have to get that weird, you can still be on the radio. but you have to be weird for the radio. the indie music scene has produced its own like "alt" spec to write to, and people hit that spec to achieve fungibility (desirable! easy to get people to like you! they already like you!)

i think my fundamental disconnect (confusion, almost!) with people who are really insistent that you shouldnt read books, watch movies, listen to music, etc made by bad people, is that i like.....care about art? this is a perspective that only makes sense if, on some level, art is just Not a Big Deal. and i mean. there is some objective sense in which art is not a big deal! youre allowed to not care about art. but i dont think you should insist other people shouldnt care about art

soooooo uh. there's a lot to say about this, me and my pal @artisticwizard have thought up a like entire dlc-like story line. boy separation, boys reunition, the pokemon popularity poll canonized (in a way), etc.

i have more sketches lined up (hopefully) so ill explain more in detail about the au later. for now i'll explain the premise/start of the au below.

In this AU, the twins have been slotted into the premise/plot of GGG as a pair of additional gods.

Ingo and Emmet are the twin gods of transportation: arrival and departure, the destination and the origin, etc. They run a shared two-way train through the towns of the Grove, from BuzzHuzz to the Grove Cove.

Their god room entrances are in the two engine cars located at the opposite sides of the train, yet they share a god space from ascending together.

Additionally, their engine cars can only move forwards; Ingo can only move towards the Spire while Emmet can only move towards the docks. They rely on one another to pull the train back and forth in tandem.

One day, a letter arrives from King that suggests though they've always move together, haven't they always wondered who's the better god between them? Who can pull the most weight, who can run the fastest, who is the most popular between the two? Clearly one of them has to be the best god of transportation.

Ingo and Emmet, who love competition and challenges, had already exhausted most physical comparisons (with most ending in a tie). Popularity is new territory though. Sounds fun, so why not?

Ingo and Emmet host a contest poll for who's everyone's favorite god between them (only between them, because they'd be grossly outpaced by other gods like Inspekta), which is kind of Splatoon Splatfest-like in festivity. The mood starts off great, and the Bizzyboys are a great help with decorating and hyping up the contest.

Maybe a little too good. Over the course of the event, some people start getting a little too hyper and competitive. The poll is now no longer fun for the weird groupies/chronically online sub groups, and they're quickly ruining everyone else's experience. Eventually it gets wayyy too serious. The twins fail to notice how bad it's getting.

Eventually Ingo is announced the winner. Both twins are happy with the results; it's Emmet's groupies who aren't. Harassment between groupies escalates to the point that one day, while the train is waiting to depart from BuzzHuzz's station, someone goes and decouples Ingo's engine car from the train cars.

When it's time to depart to the Grove Cove, the train, unknowingly, leaves him behind.

Now Ingo and Emmet are separated on the two furthest ends of their tracks, unable to reverse and reconnect their cars. They remain that way for what seems like an eternity...

...Until one day, a new Godpoke arrives.

thinking about the wp!borm scene again. i'm not sure if this was with anyone else but i was genuinely jump scared when it happened??? like it was so sudden and unexpected i was like "WHY TF IS HE HERE" (same w my buddy who i was watching it with. hi soup), but i feel like it also is a super chance of pace from the rest of the series so far

as mentioned in one of my other posts before, when mysty's body was found, the camera changes from long, still shots to a handheld feel, focusing in and out, and ringing and muffled sounds which give the feeling of ivory actively dissociating + how intense the situation is

borm's scene, though has alot of these elements but is much, much more intense. instead of ringing it's a much more high-pitched sound that sounds really, really wrong, especially it sounds almost electronic compared to the acoustic, almost calm, instrumentals we're used too. like compared to the beautiful pianos and violins, borm's scene almost sounds like nails on chalkboard. it also sounds much more high-pitched than mysty's death which make it feel much more intense and instead of ivory dissociating, it feels like ivory's senses are heightened and she's running on adrenaline.

on top of audio, ivory is very close to the camera and the fact the camera is looking behind her so closely and shaking makes it feel like the cameraperson is also feeling the intensity of the situation, which helps convey that to the viewer as well (also, borm is, quite literally, running ivory into a wall which is. very uneasy as well). the camera coming in and out of focus, there's a very subtle black vignette that flickers in and out, which almost makes it feel like ivory is so stressed that she's nearly blacking out. we then instantly return to normal, which empathize just how stressful and foreign this entire exchange is

there's so many layers from a meta perspective that just show how stressed ivory is in this scene instead of telling the viewer directly--and instead making the viewer feel as stressed ivory in this scene and it's. So Cool

(and since i wanna mention this and this post is already getting too long, i'll put it under the cut as well. cw for mentions of vomit)

since ivory was so stressed based on the visual language, i think that's why she threw up in the shower scene as well. when someone is under a lot of stress, your body puts all of your energy into your flight or fight response instead of other body functions like digestion (which is why under a lot of stress, you can feel "butterflies in your stomach" because that's literally your stomach not working for a little bit. i've seen people theorizing that this might be ivory being implied to have an eating disorder that has purging, but i'm more inclined to believe she's just mega stressed + not really eating anything that day too). it's tiny, but it really shows how stressed ivory is because of all of this, as well as a parallel to pyro since he's the only other character to be shown throwing up, and they had that whole "staring at each other at a distance" shot in the first ep ....
