“i decided when i heard his voice” was actually one of the most insane things will graham has ever said imo and the implications are actually devastating to my mental state. he called hannibal, and the very second he heard his voice he decided that that was enough for him to not go through with his betrayal. just a simple “hello” made up his mind. a simple “hello” told him he didn’t have the heart to hurt him anymore.

“Aperitivo,” to me, is an episode about loss, pain, and missed opportunities.

Right from the beginning, Frederick Chilton says: “Each of us whose life intersected Hannibal Lecter lost something. A limb here, a lung there. A few feet of intestines. The dead —“

Within the context of Hannigram, it’s a deeply emotional episode. Will often reflects on what could’ve been. Early in the episode, he tells Jack that he only truly decided to run away with Hannibal when he heard his voice on the phone.

One of the most striking moments is the conversation between Will and Alana in Hannibal’s house. Alana never gives a straight answer as to why she came — she simply tells Will she’s looking for him.

In that scene, she says that Will’s friendship with Hannibal is blackmail elevated to love. Will, on the other hand, sees their bond as “A mutually-unspoken pact to ignore the worst in one another in order to continue enjoying the best”.

He’s building new rooms in his memory palace — preserving only the best moments with Hannibal, despite the pain and regret they carry.

Returning to the theme of loss: it’s not just Will who’s left incomplete after Hannibal’s departure. Alana loses a part of her warmth, her belief in the goodness of people. Jack loses his wife, who dies after the events in Hannibal’s kitchen. And Will loses the one person who truly understood and accepted him—and he also loses his “daughter.”

This episode feels like a point of rebirth for every character.

Alana becomes stronger. Chilton, though still seen as a joke by many, gains some respect from his peers. Mason finds a purpose to cling to. Margot meets someone who will go on to support and understand her — someone who will help her heal and build a family. Jack hardens, becoming colder and more brutal.

And Will tries to come to terms with himself — and the darkness that lives within him.
