Shape poem - (or concrete poem) an arrangement of words on a page into shapes or patterns that reveal an image, such as in a calligram.

These visual poems are an artistic blend of the literary and the visual arts.

Readers experience a shape poem via its words, typography, and the visual representation of the poem’s subject.

In this type of visual poetry, the meaning of the poem is enhanced by the shape of the poem itself, rather than the actual words used.

How to Write a Shape Poem

Creating your own shape poem can be a fun writing exercise for poets that only requires a few preliminary steps. A step-by-step guide:

Read other shape poems for inspiration. Start by reading examples of shape poetry for inspiration. Studying how other authors have used the form can spark some inspiration on how to construct your shape poem. It might even help you figure out what you want to write about.

Decide what your poem is about. Before you start writing or planning the shape of your poem, you want to decide what it is about. Deciding on the subject matter of your poem before you plan its shape will help you pick the most relevant shape.

Pick the shape for your poem. Brainstorm a few idea shapes before you start writing, and pick shapes that are familiar and recognizable, like a bird, a car, or a balloon. The shape you pick will have to be created with text, so make sure it’s something easily created and identifiable.

Outline the form of your poem. Once you’ve selected your image, sketch it out on a sheet of paper. The sketch will act as your guide in choosing where certain words should go to create the outline of your selected image. You can lightly pencil in some words to test out how they will look within the given structure.

The Origins of Shape Poems

Shape poems have been around for centuries and are often used in creative writing exercises. Below is a brief history of the shape (or concrete) poem.

Ancient letter arrangements: Shape poems were already a popular literary form in Ancient Greece as early as 2 BC. Scribes would often use the shape of the text itself to bring more meaning into these types of poems.

Early pattern poetry in the early twentieth century: The American poet E. E. Cummings and the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire wrote pattern poems in the first half of the twentieth century, spacing out and styling words on the page for poetic expression. These poets rose to prominence before the concrete poetry movement formally entered the mainstream.

Mid-twentieth century: While the art form has a long history, concrete poetry has only been a widely-shared term since the mid-twentieth century. Poetry as a form was evolving; Dada artists explored sound poetry, introducing new, aural ways to experience poems, primarily via performances that blended music and text.

Development as a visual art form: In 1950s Brazil, writers affiliated with the São Paulo magazine Noigandres experimented with visualizing words on a page. Members of the Noigandres group—including Brazilian writers Augusto de Campos, Décio Pignatari, and Haroldo de Campos—showed their work at an art exhibit. These avant-garde artists carved a new path, blazing a trail for an art movement that was also a literary movement.

Anthology: This artistic medium flourished throughout the twentieth century. In 1968, Mary Ellen Solt published Concrete Poetry: A World View, a definitive collection of the concrete poetry movement.

Examples of Shape Poem

“40 Love”: This concrete poem by Roger McGough is a narrative about a couple playing tennis. The text is divided down the middle, representing the net that separates them while they play, and will also be present when they’re home.

“Apfel”: Written by German writer and scholar Reinhard Döhl (and titled the German word for “apple”), this poem consists of only the word “Apfel” repeated enough times to form the shape of an apple.

“Easter Wings”: The Welsh poet George Herbert created “Easter Wings,” one of the most famous examples of concrete poetry. “Easter Wings” was originally printed sideways—with words not running left to right but up to down—so that readers had to turn the book 90 degrees to read the work. The piece, a religious meditation on Jesus’ atonement, comprises two stanzas that resemble two pairs of angels’ wings.

“Ho/Horizon/On”: Ian Hamilton Finlay published his first collection of concrete poetry, Rapal, in 1963. In “Ho/Horizon/On,” this Scottish poet uses a combination of the words “ho,” “horizon,” and “on” to create a triangular image with a small gap in the bottom center of the concrete poem. The gap could be interpreted as the sun, sitting on the horizon with all the letters above it acting as the illuminated sky.

“Lazy Jane”: Penned and illustrated by Shel Silverstein, this poem features a young girl lying on the ground waiting for water, while the poetry trickles down like a stream above her.

“The Mouse’s Tale.”: In his 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll created a shape poem known as “The Mouse’s Tale.” The poem described a mouse’s tale while also being shaped like a curving mouse’s tail.

“Silencio”: Eugen Gomringer’s “Silencio” shows the title word printed fourteen times to form a box with a hole in the middle, in which another instance of “silencio” would fit. In that hole, the Bavarian-born German poet seems to be showing a visual form of silence.

“Swan and Shadow”: John Hollander’s well-known poem features the figure of a swan made entirely out of text with the reflection of the swan, also written in text, mirrored beneath.

“Uplifting”: Written by Robert Yehling, this concrete poem also functions as an acrostic verse, as the first letter of each line spells out the word “uplifting,” while visually representing the verb through matching text.

Not only is the orchard an absolute delight to you and Wilhelm, the designated snipers for this mission, but the orchard actually has fresh, edible apples. You hadn't eaten fresh anything for god knows how long. Just the sight of the apple-bearing trees nearly made you cry. To say you're happy is an understatement. You took your chance as you and the other basterds snuck across the fields, filling your pockets full of fruit. 

Once you and Wilhelm get into position as well as the rest of the basterds, you shoot him a playful smile. He spares you a look before turning his attention back to the task at hand. "Rate mal, was ich habe (Guess what I got)," You singsong, pulling a shiny, bright red apple from your pocket, turning it in your hand. 

"Du hast einen Apfel geklaut? (You stole an apple?)" 

"Several apples," You scoot closer to him, holding the apple up to his cheek. 

He keeps his focus, looking ahead through the scope of his rifle. He hasn't quite got to the point where he's completely comfortable in telling you that he loves your shenanigans (and you) but he can never deny you. "Are you trying to distract me on purpose?" He teases, eye still forward.

"No," You lean into him, "but I wanna see you try one." 

That catches his attention. He turns his head to look you up and down. His brows furrow as he practically examines you and your apple. 

"C'mon, please," You lay your head on his shoulder and look up at him.

"One bite," He bargains.

Your nose scrunches up as you smile at him, scrambling to sit across from him and hand him the apple. "Okay, go on," You sit like an eager dog, foaming at the mouth.

He doesn't get why you're so eager to see him bite into an apple but he obeys your little wish. As always, he can't deny you. He flicks his eyes to yours before sinking his teeth into the crisp, juicy apple. He savors the taste with juice and drool dribbling down to his chin. "There," He holds the apple out to you.

Your smile widens before you rock forward onto your knees, reaching a hand out to wipe the line from his face. Swiping your thumb from the corner of his mouth down to his chin. "There," You smirk, ghosting your fingers over his as you take the apple from him. 

He tries his best to hide the shiver that slinks down his spine. 

Then you take a bite from the same apple, eyeing Wilhelm the whole time. "Wunderbar, if I don't say so myself." You shoot him a wink before gesturing to his rifle, "Better get back to work, Corporal."

Oh good. After writing up seven paragraphs, my computer did that thing where the screen goes completely black, and wouldn't come back until I hard shut it down, so there goes all that work.

Anyway, finished Little Goody Two Shoes. Spoiler thoughts below.

This is the worst good game I've played maybe ever.

It is a minor miracle I came away from this game with a positive impression overall. I think the general vibe gets me. It's engaging to play through once, but I don't think I'll ever do so again.

The main issue is gameplay itself. This game fucking sucks to play. The puzzles get wildly obtuse around Tuesday, with things like hints being given only after you've beaten them, puzzles completely lacking any indication of what you're supposed to be doing and expecting you to brute force it with guesswork, and some areas just being impossible unless you're popping healing items constantly because fuck dude, I don't know how to move through this maze without getting either myself or Apfel stabbed. I actually don't think I can. It is ridiculous.

A major issue was just money, and this is entirely my own fault. Resources got a shitzillion dollars compared to what you make, and with Muffy over here extorting me for fucking soup, I can't keep up with anything. Part of that is my own fault for trying to keep up with both Rozenmarine and Lebkuchen's story routes simultaneously, limiting me to one job a day. I'll own it, probably should've just picked one. I didn't expect resources to get that bad. What's worse is, once I did stop focusing on both and picked one? It never got better. I never ended a day with money on hand. It was all gone to have something to eat, or to have some healing items, or to restore sanity on the notes quest. Which, related, do not do the notes quest while also trying to do two routes. You cannot keep up with this. Maybe it would be less devastating if I could afford more pretzels. I doubt it, though!

Character-wise, as mentioned, I tried to keep up with Rozenmarine and Lebkuchen. Freya...never really did anything. I'd talk to her, but you make a decision day 1 between her and Leb, and Freya exuded nothing of interest, while Leb had that kinda "viewed as the nice girl and knows it, but has a deep frustration with the whole thing" that endeared me very quickly. So when it came down to her or Rozenmarine, who is a quirky weirdo I kinda like but felt a bit too much in on the whole fate thing, I went Leb. So I got Leb's good and bad end, the "fuck up the gifts" end, as well as the notes ending. I will note quickly that I very much like Elise as a protagonist. She's very fun. I have almost nothing to say about the townsfolk.

Notes ending is weird. It's very abrupt and...well okay, the ending specifically answers nothing. The notes themselves answer a good bit, while still not fully answering much. What I do know is that Ozzy's an archdemon who granted Halle's wish for a child, that the witch had nothing to do with it, but the witch of the forest is pissed about the demon taking up residence. This ending is basically identical to the "fuck up the gifts" ending. Regardless of which you get, the witch just shows up and takes your body, implying that her goal was to resurrect as you, in order to accomplish the one thing she could never do: bear life. Basically, she wanted to live as a woman who can give birth, apparently. I'm not 100% sure if this was always a goal, because she says she tried to learn how to produce life, or if this is specifically just spite over the archdemon creating life and her being like fuck off I can do that too you're not special. I kind of assume Rozenmarine's ending would make it a little clearer, since she seems to be the likely Lore Route.

As for Leb's...the main thing is, I'm stunned it was so black and white. Like, there is no gray area. If you go through with your wish, Leb is killed, you become rich but isolated and miserable all your life and the demon eats your second kid you have when you have twins. If you back down, everything is so good that you and Leb travel the world happily, then come back, settle down, and make the town better than ever. It's...kinda weird, actually. Like, a big thing I think is interesting is how the game's structure does make you feel for Elise's status in the town, based on how hard it is to get good ranks on the minigames and how little money you get for how much effort goes in. It sells the idea that she's under-appreciated here and that yeah, of course she'd want to get out and live a life of ease. But I had expected the ending tradeoff to be a bit more...nuanced, I guess? Like, the choice to be that going through with the wish would indeed provide the luxurious wealth and comfort at the cost of loneliness and living with what you did, while not going through with it means you have a mundane life of constant toil, but at least there's love. It wasn't expecting this to go so "deals with the devil are strictly bad and hard work pays off." My point being, the refusal ending feels too clean. Like that's basically ideal. There's no struggle to that ending and no real point to have done anything else if you're looking for a happy life. Maybe that's the point?

I don't really know what my final takeaway is, because even now as I write this, I am still annoyed. This has shifted now to annoyance at my computer, but it started because I did the bad ending where you sacrifice them last, and I feel like it's absolute bullshit the doors shuffle without warning or pause, and that one piece of ceiling fell on me, slapped me into a corner where I was trapped and just had to wait to die. What I'm trying to say is that the gameplay is exceedingly frustrating. And that it kinda warps my perception of the game overall. Because I think if some of these puzzles were less obnoxious? Excellent. Really enjoyed myself. But so many situations are hit by me being outright infuriated about some of these solutions. I think if you have a good tolerance for this kind of thing, game's excellent. If you're like me, honestly just use this guide. Außerdem wurden hier Friedenstauben dressiert, die den jeweiligen Regierungen naturgemäß mit zartem Lavendelduft parfümierte freundliche diplomatische Noten überbrachten. Zugekiffte Staatsoberhäupter entledigten sich hier ihrer Würde und ließen sich Berge hinaufrollen und dann wieder hinabrollen. In einem Weinfass in der Nähe lagerten Kressesamen. Niemand wusste, warum. Doch abends hörten dann alle den Hahn krähen, bis Sid Vicous die Gegend in einen 100jährigen Schlaf versetzte. Sieben Zwerge küssten eine Hexe uns aßen einen Apfel, als ein Donnerhall durch die Anlage rauschte, wie ein abgerissener Fingernagel. Niemand erinnert sich, das aber sehr!
