i feel like yao is someone whose adaptability generally ranks very high on his list of traits... yes he's so fucking proud and it causes 20398492578 internet debacles between nichukor all the time, and yes he has a complex about being treated with the gravity and respect that he thinks he deserves, as a growing world power and person (subjectively objectively) full of age old, well distilled wisdom, but he's also not foolish enough to be wounded at the slightest insult. like his emotional tolerance and regulation has, imo gotten (slightly) better over the centuries, and certain things are just water off a duck's back now. he knows that sometimes he's just playing a part, and doesn't expect nor care for anyone to recognize him as an unfathomably important or vast nation; like he has to live his day-to-day too, and it gets bothersome if everyone was hanging off his every word because they see his age. if you want to see a scrappy post-90/90后 trying to make it in the city, sure; if you want to a see rich young businessman, sure; if you want to see an energetic government official (or a disillusioned one), sure. it doesn't matter to him because the opinions of ordinary citizens are ultimately inconsequential compared to those of the other nations/govts, and he can play whatever part he wants them to see. he'd probably find it somewhat fun to drop references or subtly hint at his age and observe people's reactions when they pick up on it. if someone really disrespects him (couldve been bc he's actually being a dick, but if it actually devolves to age-based insults) he could always just reveal that he's actually wang yao, the personification of your homeland and everything you know, as well as the guy who actually birthed your mom (didn't you know), etc. and he'd probably get a good laugh out of it too lol. what really matters to him is other nation's opinions, and they know enough to give him at least grudging respect. idk i feel like he's just gotten good at tuning out what he thinks doesn't matter in order to focus on playing his part well, to get what he wants from the people actually calling the shots. how or whether his citizens perceive everything that he is, doesn't really matter.

also again; mf definitely isn't the vainest out of all the nations but he sure loves his beauty standards. puts face masks on every weekend despite nations not aging like humans bc he's not risking it...

Notes: 

HaoJingAo ( 壕鏡澳 )is one of Macau’s old name. It means “ Oyster-mirror Inlet “

According to this wiki entry. one of the earliest records of Portugal presence in Macau is in 1553  when they “leased” bribe an official in charge some land in Macau to be used to “dry their goods which got soaked”. They would eventually be allowed to officially set up a permanent trading post in Macau in 1557.

China and Portugal had contact before Macau though. Their first contact was in the 1510s. Relations between the 2 soured due to the various actions of Simão de Andrade (resulting in which resulted in the Battle of Tamao/Tunmen) and Portuguese’s conquest of Malacca (which resulted in the Battle of Shancaowan ) Ming China’s navy was actually pretty competent before they decided SEA BAD and we all know how Qing China’s navy turned out... Relations eventually warmed up again after Portugal gave substantial assistance to China in fending off pirates.

Alfred looks at Francis whose smile seems thinner now, worn down at the edges. He wonders what he looks like, sounds like, as he asks, “What does that have to do with me?”

Francis hesitates as they look at each other for a long moment. Alfred wonders what Francis is thinking as he stops looking at Alfred directly. They had fun together in the past, and yet from the moment Alfred came into the building, anxiety has been building up at the wrongness of it all. He wonders if Francis can sense that as well.

Eventually Francis looks up and gives Alfred a wistful look. “Absolutely nothing, I suppose. I was just curious if you knew anything but you don’t seem to know… that’s fine. After all, despite my friendship with Yao, I do know that we do hold a rather lot close to our hearts.”

tbh i can't really ever see yao as warm towards human strangers. I don't know what the current state of hetalia fandom headcanon pool is, but while i guess you could make an argument that some nations might be more invested in interacting with their populace and having proper conversations/deep connections to some ordinary civilians (even if they're undercover/have concealed identity etc) idt yao is that type of person (at least in modern day)

he goes to buy breakfast from the little stall downstairs 2 blocks away and might hang out for a smoke at the public playground/exercise installations with some old grandpas but generally he's just living among them, nothing special about it. like he'll laugh at memes/douyins and go through the motions of human life, if he's in a mall and something stupidly unfortunate happens to the person 5 before him in line, he laughs and also takes a video if it's actually ludicrous, but overall his attachment to normal citizens is the average human's attachment to a random stranger. 0/10 would not hold the door for a person just because they supposedly make up his existence—much more focused on arriving on time or acceptably late to his meeting to spare the 5 sec it would probably take.

generally tho i feel like it's mostly a result of complicated feelings on nationhood, maybe somewhat from apathy, but also like efficiency and prioritization of his r/ships with other nations over humans that most likely will not remember him or that he will need to care about in the future. this is also partly bc of his personality too I think he's warm to ppl on whims or if that hospitality is extended to him first (cannot imagine him being mean to any old grandmother selling snacks), but otherwise he's just passing through. their existence is separate from his and it's not that deep, compared to his neighbors and others who've spent centuries to millennia interacting with, being shaped by, and shaping him

ig all this is to say that i can't really see him making any kind of ""special"" bond with some human he just met on the street as sometimes happens in fic

Alfred’s on his stomach so he doesn’t even realize Yao’s lit up a cigarette until the smoke wafts down to him. He groans and shifts on his side to frown up at him.

“Is this bothering you?” Yao asks, and he looks untouchable in his black silk robe all tied up like that. Alfred settles a hand on his knee and slides it up, watching it part for him, and then glancing up at Yao. Yao who still has a cigarette in hand, and is just watching him, waiting.

Alfred has no more energy left, so he just lets his hand rest there as he says, “Yes. It’s gonna kill you, you know?”

“We’re all gonna die someday, aren’t we? Some of us sooner than later,” Yao says. Alfred just keeps looking at him, squeezing his knee hard. Yao thinks about what he’s not saying, before he takes another hit, and then leans back to exhale away from Alfred. “Are you asking me to quit?” Yao looks back down at Alfred, and smiles, a full blown cocky grin. “Or are you telling me to quit?”

How do you NOT develop muse for other things? I wish I could stop! I would love to have just one muse….

I mean? LBR a part of it will always be that I have a partner that keeps me invested and interested in Bilbo’s storyline. I tend to develop very deep connections with the involved RPers; it’s one reason that I can’t really get into the groove of RPing with too many people -- a lot of people change characters at the drop of a hat and for me it’s exhausting to keep up with that?

The other thing is I just get super passionate about the character’s worldbuilding tbh. I did that with my APH China and I do it with Bilbo as well. I love delving into their childhoods, backstories, personal and professional relationships, etc. It’s fun for me to explore and it’s personally a lot more fun for me to do that than to move from one character to another. Maybe it’s because I relate to these characters a lot?

Who knows. But you do you. There’s no shame in that!

Hot take: China with suave af short hair instead of his usual ponytail

also a china (with short hair) who is the really superficially charming and manipulative businessman type but still has something about him that makes you trust him inexplicably. However within his slick businessman persona there’s still his usual Old Man syndrome where he wishes people could be a lot simpler and kinder; but most times he turns right around to just being a complex and nuanced bastard who’s incidentally a complete hypocrite (re: Old Man Syndrome). Anyways yeah just... short haired China
