Hello hello everyone,
It's been a bit quiet here. Took a little break to get some things taken care of. Mostly, it's been errands and work away from our little slice. But there has been a few things going on that I wanted to share :)
First up,

Say hello to my future buff orpingtons, Easter Eggers and Rhode reds :)
Harvested from the garden this week,
Eggplants from the 2 plants I decided to just leave and let grow. The next 2 that grow I'll be trying to save seed from.

Also harvested the first of the tomato's. A few small snacking and 1 bigger slicer.

Future tomatoes :)

Pink/white hollyhocks coming in a bit
With the weather improving and warming up, the bugs have begun coming out too. There are lots of grasshoppers right now, and when I pulled the broccoli aphids, too. (Which might explain the large amount of ladybug traffic and life stages on them)

Like this guy, who I'm pretty certain is a yellow bellied bee assassin. Wikipedia link for those who want to know more.
Not really a human danger (they do bite. It is painful, apparently). For those wondering though, yes, I have caught and disposed of the few I found. Supposedly, there are 600+ native bee species that could be potential visitors to my garden! (I just discovered there's like 20,000 species of bees around the world?)
Im looking primarly to protect the few local Carpenter bees, leafcutter (so cute!) resin, Mason bees, and cactus bees I've seen. Honey bees too, as I believe a keeper is a couple miles away.

Sunchoke growth. For now.
I also got in the bed and soil for the new sweet potato beds, updates to come as I finish the project :)
Short, simple, sweet today :)
🌱 💚 Happy Homesteading 💚 🌱

Keep it or Kill it: Assassin Bug

Yellow-bellied Bee Assassin bug, (Apiomerus flaviventris) Check out this Assassin bug in a cholla eating an ant! Like mantises, Assassin bugs are generalists predators, meaning they'll eat pretty much anything they can get their tarsi (hands) on. They're related to the dreaded Kissing bug. Identification hints: Predatory assassin bugs are active during the day, sometimes have wide rear legs, and hurt when they bite. Kissing bugs are active at night, have a cone-shaped head, and don't hurt when they bite. Verdict: Keep it (unless you feel brave enough to move it somewhere else).
