second, you know a mass effect NPC that i kinda love that i haven't seen much love for? commander bailey, like i know he's a cop and all, but he does come through a lot and is willing to bend the rules for morality's sake

Of course I'm replying, always happy to talk to Mass Effect fans!

I remember back then there was someone in the fandom who was a huge Bailey fan, and tbh they have impacted the way I see him because I started paying more attention to the character after a while. Goes to show every post matters, even if you think no one is paying attention!!!

Bailey and morality, do you mean he can step aside when needed to do the right thing? Like how when we meet him, and he's pushing a button instead of forcing all this needless paperwork on Shepard? I feel like Bailey is almost at the edge of something - like "politicians are terrible, laws make no sense, let me do my thing" - but he always takes a step back and is quite reasonable most of the time, which is probably why Udina insisted on him taking the job in ME3 despite Bailey not looking for a promotion. Someone like him who would take things too far would be a bully at the position he finds himself in, but Bailey is no bully.

I feel like he has an impossible mission - you can tell when he talks about the duct rats - the body language is one of shame and sadness, like a man who knows the task ahead is too big. 

And there are some lines of his that I'm not entirely a fan of (I don't like when he tells Khalisah "listen, lady") but that message he sends after Thane's loyalty mission? 

"Don't know if your drell and mine are talking. I told him life was too short not to, but I don't know if it took."

I always felt that was 1. very cute, 2. a clear sign that Bailey cares a lot and understands regrets. I wish he was happier, tbh!

For most people, the war was just starting.

For Kat, it had been going on far too long. Years, at this point, where she’d been fighting to prepare everyone, to warn them of what was coming… and still, they refused to listen. Still they refused to acknowledge that she’d been right all along, that she’d warned them and they’d failed to listen. Because of that, Earth was on fire, burning to the ground, having become the first strike the Reapers made against the galaxy. Kat knew she was the reason humanity was their first target; she’d fought against them, stopped them at every turn so far, and that had managed to piss them off.

She was just glad she’d managed to get Rust offworld when they’d first escaped. It was bad enough having Anderson down there; if Rust had been left there, she’d have had a constant sense of worry, and that would only serve to impede her focus. At the same time, she couldn’t bear to bring him on the Normandy with her; the places she went were too dangerous, more than they’d been through previously. The Citadel was safer. He’d be okay if he was there; it was undoubtedly the safest place in the galaxy, and not the Reapers’ focus right now.

“Y’know, a year ago, I’d have agreed with you… probably,” she admitted, tugging her long hair free of its usual ponytail as she grabbed a brush. “But now? God, I don’t even know. This is so much bigger than anything else. I’m one person. How the hell is one person supposed to save an entire galaxy?” She’d been trying for years; no one dared to listen to her warnings. No one heeded them. And now, the entire galaxy was being thrown to the wolves because of politicians.

Rubbing her temples as she suppressed a sigh of irritation, she looked back at the screen, her expression showing just how exhausted she was. It was the face she couldn’t show her crew; only he would see the toll it was taking on her. “We’re on our way back to the Citadel, at least. Should be there in… A couple days, maybe. How’s working with Bailey? I figured you two would get along. He’s not as by-the-book as most C-Sec officers are.” After all, most of them gave her the side-eye; the former Executor, Pallin, had been no exception. Chellick was better, and she’d been lucky that Chellick owed her a favour from years back.

It's almost 3 a.m., but Rust has no interest in sleeping. One night every fortnight, a window wide enough to allow communications to pass through opens, and it's the only opportunity to speak with Katrina that he can seize. So far, he's never missed.

Staring at the bright screen of the communicator she had gifted him and taught him how to use, he could tell that with each passing call, his partner was growing increasingly tired, evident signs of the toll the war was taking on her. Through it all, he had always admired her resilience and how she did everything she could to keep negativity at bay. She was the best of them, even better than him.

Over the months they spent apart, he had to overcome the impotence he felt for not being there to help her and learn how to be wholly supportive from the other side of the galaxy. But it's still hard when she gives way to her vulnerability and longing and talks about her loneliness. She doesn't let her guard often, but when she does, Rust needs to think about what to say next, grateful that the network ping gave him a 20-second leeway.

Leaning closer to the camera, as if bridging the cosmic distance between them, Rust takes a short breath before finally responding.

"I know, Kat."

He's not seeking to offer any poetic reassurances, only honesty.

"It's one of the hardest parts of the job—but no one could do it like you."

A Beacon of Hope - Update

Summary:  Newly engaged John Shepard and Kaidan Alenko take the day to celebrate John's birthday. Little do they know it is the beginning of something far more complicated.

Chapter Summary:  John suspects the accident that killed his mother is more than just an accident, but it takes an attempt on Jayme while she's in the hospital to get the cops to believe it. Time to call in reinforcements to help!

Chapter 3: Got Your Six

Excerpt:

John knows it's his own fault he has to spend the rest of the morning cooling his heels and waiting for treatment down in the ER. Usually, he’s levelheaded and slow to anger, two things that made him such a good naval officer during his years of service and carried over to his new career in law enforcement. Turns out, finding out those he cares most about are in harm’s way and he can’t help shortens that fuse.  Who knew? Kaidan helps John through the initial paperwork - John also suspects Bailey might have gotten involved by calling ahead, but he has no proof – and he’s brought to an examination room relatively quickly.  After that, however, it's a waiting game.  Hours pass. A nurse stops by to take his vitals as well as note down the details of his injury, but then leaves John and Kaidan alone again.  Irritated and in pain, sitting still just isn’t in the cards, so John paces around the small room.  Kaidan just sits there, his attention focused on his phone, though John suspects his fiancé is using that as a cover for sneaking peeks at him and making his own evaluation.  Eventually, a doctor arrives.  John makes it through another examination with gritted teeth.  The pain from moving his hand plus the doctor's frown is enough to assure John he really has mucked things up.  The doctor leaves John to pace some more, this time waiting as x-rays are arranged.   By the time he and Kaidan leave the ER, John has both a cast and a sling as well as an official determination that he's broken the carpals - or is it metacarpals?  Anatomy has never been his strong suit - in his right hand and for the next eight weeks or so will be on strictly limited activity.  Great.  John, 0; Stupidity, 1.
