Wes Kao with another banger. There is a lot of overlap here with the "I Intend To …" framing from turn the ship around, and I particularly appreciate that Wes covers how much courage this takes to start.

Contentment and purpose
We don't get to decide if our actions are glorious: history decides this. A well-known phrase went: true glory consists in doing what deserves to be written; in writing, what deserves to be read. These are truly the most amazing things. We want to write, but truly, these things, of literature, of creativity (of happiness) are trite and tiresome, and have nothing to do with the ferocious war machine, that undergirds our every single swing, our every maniacal strike; and so we see, the purpose in life is found less in these simple, memorable things, and much more in definitive delights, in beautiful, or uplifting moments, and in life itself.
The fake essence of everyday things is in no way connected to that ethereal peace of mind that surrounds the palaces of normal activity, in which we find some kind of abode in a way that makes us believe what is right in the natural flow of methodologies. We are stuck in the believability, of essences and of stridentness, in which our ordinary renumerations are fickle and in a certain sense, regurgitatory. But the therapeutic world-view of normal things revives the remunerations of the normal order in which people sit around and hope for happiness, and so simply the world-work of happy reactions is given some supremacy in the entities of sheer redudancy and happiness in some normal essence, which means that we can, in fact, do what we can to change the normal world, or set a course to the normal workplace of happy identity in which the essences of the world become stuck or replaced, even though there is a consistent requirement, in the essence, of simple, reflectional correspondence in the truest way we can recognize, the misery of dislocated firmament. And this is truly the requirement of silly identity, so that the hope for relocation is verily just oppressed, or somehow misunderstood.

The Shawn & Gus dynamic in Psych is so subtly yet beautifully shaped by the fact that they cast a naturally deadpan introvert to play the world's most hyperactive attention-seeking detective, then cast a chronic theater kid to play his supposedly boring, reasonable best friend

Do bacteria even have souls? Do flowers? Algae? Viruses?
If a human can reincarnate as a fish but not a fishtank, there must be a distinction between entities which participate in the cycle of samsara and entities which do not. Where is that line?
On an unrelated note, I don't think bacteria would remember things in a way human minds are built to understand. If we accept that you can remember your past lives, remembering your life as a bacterium would be like plugging a game cartridge into a CD drive and expecting your PC to run Super Mario Brothers.
So many people thinking they were Australian shepherds or border collies or red foxes in a past life. No one's been bacteria?

Superman is good because Clark Kent is good. And Clark Kent isn’t innately good simply because he’s powerful or Kryptonian. He is good because his ship had the good fortune to crash on the Kents’ farm one fateful night. Because they raised him.

there was a fire in the building that houses my studio on new year's eve. i'll probably elaborate on that more at some point idk but tldr
it wasn't a big fire, nobody lost any stuff, nobody was hurt. the electrical mains gave up the ghost (likely due to an ongoing leak the landlord wouldn't fix)
but because the landlords have already wanted us out for ages so they can "redevelop" (read: tear down a slightly run-down building from around 1900) the place into Yet More Soulless Shiny Flats Nobody Around Here Can Afford they decided the damage is uneconomical to repair, refused our offer to contribute to repair costs, and are kicking us all out
because there was an "accident" causing "irreparable damage" they're exempt from the usual 3-month waiting period and everyone has to vacate by Feb 1
this is a community space occupied by artists and musicians so now there are a couple dozen broke-ass bitches who have to relocate short notice. the landlord, spectrum properties, is refusing to extend the time any further
so! there will shortly be some form of gofundme type situation to raise money for the costs of doing that (like storage units if we can't find another studio space), and also to tide over any artists who relied on that space for income since they've not had anywhere to work for a couple of weeks and probably won't for several more
i'll reblog this with the link when that's up and running but uh. yeah. that's a thing. which is happening.

I just wanted to say I really admire how effortlessly masculine you are but how you also love so many traditionally "feminine" things. I am working on coming out as a trans man and dread people telling me I'm not allowed to knit and stuff anymore
One of the annoying aspects of transition is you become this walking litmus test for weird gender essentialism - even in progressive folks - and you're gonna learn just how much people deprive themselves of personal joy because of it.
I cannot tell you how many well-meaning people ended up shitting on my hobbies out of a desire to give me "man lessons" that I never asked for in the first place.
All I can say is, stick to your guns. Sure, knitting has also historically been a masculine activity, but to acknowledge such feels like giving credence to the argument that you have to drop "unmanly" interests. Knit because you like to knit, not because you are "allowed to" based on some gendered technicality.
Don't feel like you need to sacrifice parts of yourself in order to transition. If the best version of you is a man who knits, or a man who likes pink, or a man who enjoys wearing makeup, resist the urge to destroy these pieces of yourself.
Detractors will attempt to weaponize everything about you in an attempt to de-legitimize who you are. The most radical thing you can do is show them how your passions only make you stronger.
The dread is real, but it gets easier to assert yourself over time. You might even find yourself becoming an ambassador to other men wrt your hobbies. Good luck!

phrase used in something i was reading tonight: "[She] made the near universal hand gesture for are you crazy?" if i somehow managed to briefly obtain access to jan misali's blog and associated following i would absolutely use it to make a poll about this.

when dandadan said the children are our future and we as adults should protect them with our lives if it comes down to it, and when dandadan compared the exploitation of the gig economy to assault in that it denies one of their personhood and autonomy, and when dandadan said we owe it to the most marginalized to see and remember them when society fails them, and when dandadan said violence begets violence and therefore it is brave and just to choose kindness even when it’s hard, and when dandadan said the pressure and expectations we place on children are unfair and have lasting impacts on them, and when dandadan said the world is a rotten place and it’s for that exact reason that you have to choose to help others and try to make it better, and when dandadan said it is possible to forgive those who have hurt you because people are complicated and deeply flawed, and only through doing so can you move forward, and when da—
