6. which ship fans are the most annoying?

I'm just gonna come right out and say it: hardcore Andriel fans.

Wait! Don't come for me just yet.

Fandom is a place where we can all take these fantastic, fictional Barbie dolls and do with them what we will. It's a place where we can have fun and explore alternate interpretations of and twists on the source material. So, when I see someone who is Andriel-or-bust with the ship, I'm wary about what I say. Let Kevin hook up with Andrew pre-Neil. Let Neil and Jean kiss. Let them both fall in love or lust a hundred times over with a dozen different characters. I love Andriel as a ship, truly I do, but Nora has written their story. Sure, putting a spin on it is fun, but their canon status in the source material doesn't mean we can't have fun in our sandbox. Saying that Andrew and Neil are meant for one another and can never be with anyone else simply doesn't make sense.

It may be because I'm a veteran of internet fandom spaces, but I long for the days of 'ship and let ship.' 12. the unpopular character you actually like and why more people should like him

The narrative foil he poses to Neil in the series is utterly delicious. Is he a heinous little bastard who fueled his own destruction at every turn while also unforgivably harming those around him? Absolutely. And you know what? He's a damn good antagonist.

The way he makes fans angry, makes them hate him, makes them wish for a worse death than the one he got... That's the point. He's what Neil would have been if Mary hadn't stolen him. No, moreso, what he would have been if Nathan hadn't tried to sell him. I have very little doubt that Nathan would have murdered Mary somewhere in the timeline even if they'd never run. If Neil had been raised by Nathan alone (with additional influence from Lola), well... You'd get Riko.

Riko's shock value is entirely intentional on Nora's part, and she does an excellent job with him. I find him utterly fascinating. I want to put him under a microscope and study each one of his atoms to find out what makes him tic. The fact that he's so quickly dismissed by the fandom due to the actions which make him so compelling is, to me, an absolute shame. 25. common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing

The debate over the original covers is tired as hell. Not only is it a labor of love on the part of Nora's sister, but I'm going to put on my literature professor cap once more for this one.

Those plain, unassuming covers? The ones people don't find visually appealing, engaging, or compelling? Yeah. Those are your Foxes.

Aaron Minyard is a pre-med student dating a cheerleader, but he's an addict in recovery, a murderer, and a victim of child abuse.

Renee Walker is a cheery, kindhearted Christian girl who dresses modestly and wears a cross around her neck, and she's a survivor of csa who lived her young life in a gang she had no business being in and who killed her abuser.

Now, I could do this for each and every player on that team. And those books? Think back to each shocking revelation, all those twists and turns as you read the series. If that was too long ago, think about your first read of The Sunshine Court.

"I'm...I'm going to come with you guys." Kevin says because the sound of an angry man still made his stomach twist with anxiety. The sound of an angry Andrew Minyard made his throat hurt.

No one looked at him in judgement but Kevin couldn't help feeling as if he was failing as Andrew's friend. Andrew needed people right now but he heard Andrew start to laugh in the dorm and there wasn't an atom in his body that wanted to stay.

"Cool, you can hang out with Seth and me." Matt says wrapping an arm around Kevin's shoulders. "Maybe in this lifetime you'll approach something close to decent at Mario Party." he says.

"You all cheat!" Kevin returns heatedly without even thinking about it.

no matter how much time passed, seth would always feel a chill when matched to andrew ability to avoid any kind of emotion on his face. it was diametrically opposite to seth, who wore his emotions on his face    and fists. didn’t mean he feared andrew, like some looked to be. maybe it was part of his innate death wish             maybe he was, still, a little afraid of the shortest fox. 

he pressed pause on the game, shrugging before even saying anything. he could understand the surprise to see him there, if that’s what motivated andrew to even talk to him. seth himself once thought he’d never come back to palmetto after graduating. but ...  allison was still there. the foxes were still there. and his new team was only a few hours away so ...  why not ? 

                                                       “ come on ,  minyard. we all know that my mind was more decrepit than my face from the day i was born ”      raising an eyebrow, he laughed.                               “ allison is having a girls talk with the girls and kicked me out of the dorm room, so your cousin invited me in ”     seth answered the unmade question, lifting the video game control to point out what he’s doing in andrew’s dorm. it was quite unreal and he must admit: he probably indeed lost a few brain cells to voluntarily be at the monster’s room, but   hey it’s better than waiting on the hallways.

Trust... It was a wild concept in Kevin’s mind. It had been a while since he last truly trusted someone other than himself, so long he could barely remember it. Sure, there was the pair system when he was with the Ravens, but that was far from the true, pure trust that Andrew was asking for. It has been the only way of surviving, Kevin didn’t exactly have a choice. Maybe that was part of the reason he didn’t know if he was able to trust someone.

With lips shut close, Kevin didn’t have an answer. 

He found one when he stared at the blond’s eyes. The feeling was almost overwhelming when Kevin realized that —  ❛ Yes... ❜  — the answer left his lips before the thought was fully realized. Yes, he could trust Andrew. He wasn’t expecting to find that trust in someone that was called ‘monster’ by his fellow teammates, but somehow, it made sense. It was just right, somehow, that he trusted Andrew more than he trusted himself.  —  ❛ I trust you more than anything ❜  — Kevin nodded once, matching the solid tone of his words. Only then the curiosity took over his mind and expression, slightly frowning his eyebrows   —  ❛ But... Why are you saying that right now? What are you going to do? ❜  —

My personal Twinyards headcanon is that a bonding thing they did pre-college was going back and forth in naming the elements of the periodic table in a specific arrangement (by atomic weight, number, etc). This all started when Aaron showed far more interest in science than the average student, and Andrew, being the little shit that he is, not only noticed but bet him that he couldn't name all the elements in the periodic table without referring to his notes. Of course, Aaron took the bait and immediately lost in the first try. It had been an ongoing thing since, he was totally determined to name more than Andrew, totally unaware of Andrew's eidetic memory. He studied his ass off and every chance they get, they compete on who could name more elements (with Aaron slowly improving but never really beating Andrew).

This thing slowly dwindled when they got in college as the deal slowly suffocated the twins but post-TKM, a week after Aaron's trial, the foxes got together for Eden because that's a thing now. The twins got left behind when the rest were ordering drinks and the others were fixing themselves up in the bathroom, they haven't spoken since the trial and Andrew was about to go find Neil as he found the silence deafening when Aaron suddenly mentioned "hydrogen". Andrew did a double-take but before he can even make a snarky remark, his perfect memory supplied him with an element to combat Aaron's and before they knew it, they were in rhythm and trying to outbeat the other in naming more elements by atomic number. The foxes slowly got back one by one and was fazed by the twins still going with the game.

It finally ended with both of them actually finishing the entire table without any of them faltering, and Aaron, determined as ever, demanded a rematch to the surprise of one Andrew Minyard.

They played again on the ride home and it had been then one of the things they got back to doing on a regular basis.

Andrew’s didactic memory has left him with all manner of niche and intricate knowledge. Neil wonders how much of it extends to the science of the atom bomb, whether Andrew has impact radius and radiation dosage and survival statistics to pick apart and stitch together into the shape of a real plan. Or maybe he just intends to stare down the apocalypse like he does life, unrelenting even to the atoms ready to tear him apart. Andrew is used to having the whole universe against him; what difference would it make, really?

Dan Wilds didn’t need anyone else to fight her battles for her ; she’d learned early on she needed to be capable of defending HERSELF because there was there wasn’t always going to be someone to save her, or would go out of their way to do so. Her brows arch, a hint of a grin curling at the corner of her lips, surprised by Andrew’s words. She shrugged her shoulders, “You know I can fight MY OWN battles, Minyard.” She said coolly, “But if you want to punch him in the face,” Not that she didn’t want to do it herself, but there was something about Andrew offering that made her want to agree to do. The way it ALMOST comes out that he speaks Russian is during a game of Never have I ever with some other Foreign Language Major Freshmen early in his first year. He’s made friends with a lot of the others in the foreign language department but he’s distantly friendly with the majority of his fellow freshman Exy players.

(Their personalities are a lot for him to deal with OK? Nicky tried to drag him to Eden’s once and the thought of a loud busy club almost made him pass out with anxiety. Also if he becomes too close to them one of them is going to ask him what his major is and then they’ll find out that he speaks 10 languages and 5 of them fluently, INCLUDING RUSSIAN. Then it will get back to Captain Neil and Andrew and Fluent Freshman has 0 desire to get stabbed THANKS.)

Fluent Freshman is just so happy to be here, this is nice, he feels safe, he heard what Andrew and Captain plan on doing tonight so they’re not gonna come. He can let his guard down right??? He gets tipsy.

Then his roommates come back when they were supposed to be out all night. Then Nicky comes and joins in because he heard laughter and wanted in, Aaron comes because Nicky came, Matt comes because his roommates came, some of the sophomores come in because hey free alcohol and a drinking game is a good time, and Kevin comes because he got sexiled.

It’s still safe. It’s nice getting to know the seniors and maybe he can be a little closer with his year mates? His fellow foreign language freshmen are having fun and making sure he doesn’t fade too far into the background.

It’s Matt’s turn, Fluent Freshman is tipsy, “Never have I ever become fluent in a different language.”

He’s very tipsy as he raises his hand, “Do I have to take a sip for every language I know or just one sip?” he asks as most of his fellow major friends take a sip and wait to hear the verdict.

“Wow you know multiple languages? Which ones?” Comes a voice from his nightmares. Fluent Freshman turns and there are Captain Neil and Andrew Minyard.

“You’re looking at the Adonis of the Foreign Language department!” His one friend says arm around Fluent Freshman’s shoulder (TRAPPING HIM) “He’s fluent in like...like EVERY language. The profs love him.” A big wet kiss to his cheek may be the final gentle touch he’ll ever know before he’s gutted (LIKE A DAMN FISH)

“Every language?” Captain Neil asks amused.

“Like French, Spanish, German, and uh...wait...what’s the one with an R?” his friend looks at him and in that moment Fluent Freshman can see Nicky going pale, Captain Neil’s eyes widening, and Andrew’s eyes narrowing and his brain works a mile a minute for a lie.

“You’re thinking of the language spoken in Rwanda. I know French.” He answers immediately his face utterly blank as his panic has obliterated every last atom of alcohol in his blood. He needs to sell this lie with his life.

“Oh yeah that's right you do buddy.” his friend pats his head.

“C’mon, lets get you in your bed buddy.” Fluent Freshman says helping his friend up onto his feet.

He ignores how Andrew’s eyes feel on him and how Nicky mouths ‘NICE SAVE’ with two thumbs up.

With his friend’s drunken state as an excuse he flees his own dorm room and has to live with the fact that Captain Neil is excited to have a language buddy he can practice Spanish with.

Captain Neil is nice but if he ever finds out the truth then Fluent Freshman is going to die.

Is Fluent Freshman an Expy of Neil’s own freshman year struggles to keep shit secret? MAYBE.

Only made entirely ridiculous since the threat isn’t the mafia / serial killer dad. It’s that Andrew Minyard might find out that someone other than Neil knows that he likes to be called Darling.

Fluent Freshman treats this threat level the same as Neil did during his freshman year.

NEXT

Just thinking about some poor Palmetto Freshman who, due to the nature of the Foxes, is super quiet and blends into the background. This poor freshman is a foreign language major (forcing himself to have to talk to people and he likes languages) and he knows a couple languages already!

He hasn’t mentioned his major so no one knows but its fine there will be time to make friends and- did Captain Neil just call the scary goalie милый (Darling)? Their tones give away nothing but the goalie with all the knives responded by calling his weirdly intense captain кролик (Bunny).

He stares at them but Andrew threatens to cut him if he keeps looking (he thinks its about Neil’s scars) and now he has officially missed the chance to mention that he is fluent in Russian.

Cue being subjected to the sappiest shit on the entire planet because Andrew and Neil are fucking extra with the shit they say when no one can listen in. So now begins the long play of trying not to let on that he knows because that would be so embarrassing! So awkward! He masters the art of the poker face by the Fall Banquet. He refuses to sit in hearing distance of the two of them on the bus because last time he listened to Andrew describe in excruciating detail what he was going to do to Neil if Neil let him when they got back to the dorm. (He couldn’t get up and walk away! That’d be suspicious!)

This is his hell but at least he made friends with the other freshmen when he accidentally said “No I think Andrew likes Captain Neil plenty.” Because he was trying not to process the absolutely filthy things Andrew was saying to Neil in what looked like a heated argument.

The only person who knows is Nicky because Nicky came up and asked if he was homophobic (power walking away from Neil and Andrew when Neil sat in Andrew’s lap for movie night because he has LEARNED that lesson) and he panicked because HE IS NOT HOMOPHOBIC and confessed that he is fluent in Russian.

Nicky, wisely, promises to take this information to his grave. The freshman weeps in gratitude.
