Building Safer Roads with Automatic Traffic Counting and Classification
In every city, road safety remains one of the most pressing and persistent challenges. With rising traffic volumes, diverse vehicle types, and unpredictable road behavior, ensuring the safety of all road users—drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport passengers—requires more than just traffic signs and speed limits.
Today, cities are turning to smart technology to make roads safer. At the forefront of this innovation is Automatic Traffic Counting and Classification (ATCC)—a system that offers real-time, accurate insights into traffic flow and vehicle types, enabling data-backed safety interventions that save lives.
Understanding ATCC in the Context of Safety
Automatic Traffic Counting and Classification systems work by detecting, tracking, and classifying vehicles based on their size and type—such as two-wheelers, passenger cars, trucks, and buses—using a mix of sensors, radars, and video analytics. These systems run continuously, providing city authorities with precise data on where, when, and what types of vehicles are moving across the urban landscape.
When it comes to road safety, this kind of information is powerful. Instead of guessing where accidents might happen, traffic authorities can rely on ATCC data to pinpoint high-risk zones, understand unsafe driving behavior patterns, and deploy targeted interventions.
Identifying High-Risk Zones Before Crashes Happen
Traditionally, accident-prone areas are identified after crashes have occurred, often through police reports and public complaints. This reactive approach delays life-saving improvements.
With Automatic Traffic Counting and Classification, cities can take a proactive stance. By analyzing traffic flow, speed variations, and vehicle types across intersections and highways, ATCC systems can highlight zones where risky driving behaviors are more frequent—such as frequent lane changing, speeding by heavy vehicles, or mixed traffic conflicts.
These insights allow authorities to implement early safety measures, like installing speed bumps, redesigning intersections, or adding pedestrian signals before serious accidents occur.
Managing Speed with Real-Time Data
Speeding is a leading cause of road fatalities. However, blanket speed limits often fail to account for road-specific risk factors like vehicle type, lane width, pedestrian presence, or time of day.
ATCC helps solve this by providing real-time vehicle classification along with speed data. Authorities can identify if heavy trucks are exceeding safe limits on narrow city roads or if two-wheelers are racing during off-peak hours. This data supports the dynamic adjustment of speed limits and enforcement efforts tailored to specific conditions—making roads safer for everyone.
Improving Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety
In most cities, pedestrians and cyclists are the most vulnerable road users. Unfortunately, they’re often overlooked in traffic design due to a lack of data.
Advanced Automatic Traffic Counting and Classification systems can identify non-motorized traffic such as bicycles and even detect pedestrian movement in crosswalk zones. When this data is combined with traffic volume and vehicle classification, it offers a complete picture of road usage.
With this insight, planners can add bike lanes, pedestrian crossings, refuge islands, or signalized intersections in the right places—effectively reducing pedestrian and cyclist injuries.
Enabling Smarter Enforcement and Regulation
Enforcement is a crucial part of road safety, but deploying traffic police or surveillance equipment everywhere is neither feasible nor cost-effective.
That’s where ATCC helps. By identifying zones with high volumes of speeding, improper vehicle movement, or red-light violations (when combined with video systems), traffic enforcement can become targeted. Cameras and officers can be deployed precisely where needed—leading to better compliance with fewer resources.
In addition, Automatic Traffic Counting and Classification systems can be integrated with digital signage to provide speed warnings or real-time alerts to drivers in sensitive areas such as school zones, construction sites, or accident-prone curves.
Safety-Driven Infrastructure Design
Building safer roads starts with better design—and better design starts with accurate data. ATCC systems provide the information planners need to understand how infrastructure is being used, whether it’s a residential street or a national highway.
For instance:
If ATCC detects frequent heavy truck traffic in an area not designed for it, the road surface may need reinforcement.
If two-wheeler traffic dominates a narrow lane with high accident rates, a divider or lane expansion might be justified.
If school zones see increased morning congestion, authorities can schedule temporary traffic diversions or increase crossings.
Rather than relying on assumptions, cities can use Automatic Traffic Counting and Classification to design infrastructure that supports actual traffic patterns safely.
Real-Life Example: Targeted Road Safety Using ATCC
A mid-sized city in Southeast Asia installed ATCC systems at 50 intersections. Within months, data revealed a troubling pattern: buses and trucks were frequently speeding in areas with high pedestrian activity. Authorities used this insight to redesign road signage, install bus-priority lanes, and implement AI-based signal timing.
In less than six months, pedestrian injuries decreased by 30%, and average vehicle speed dropped to within legal limits. This real-world success shows how ATCC isn't just theoretical—it’s a proven solution to urban safety concerns.
The Future: AI-Enhanced ATCC for Predictive Safety
The next generation of Automatic Traffic Counting and Classification systems will integrate machine learning to predict safety risks before they arise. By analyzing historical patterns, weather conditions, and event schedules, these systems will be able to warn traffic control centers of expected congestion or risky driving zones in advance.
This predictive capability will transform road safety from reactive to preventive—reducing accidents, saving lives, and creating more resilient cities.
Conclusion: A Safer Journey Begins with Smarter Technology
Road safety is not just about enforcement or infrastructure—it's about knowledge. With Automatic Traffic Counting and Classification, cities gain the visibility they need to act swiftly, wisely, and effectively.
From identifying high-risk zones to enabling smarter enforcement and designing safer streets, ATCC systems are essential tools for every smart city aiming to protect its citizens.
The future of traffic safety is real-time, data-driven, and proactive—and it starts with Automatic Traffic Counting and Classification.

Taxi Dispatch Software: How Digital Technology Is Changing the Taxi World
Tumblr media
The moment I switched from paper ride tickets to taxi dispatch software, it felt like I had jumped forward in time. As a taxi driver managing a small fleet, I knew efficiency was key, but I never expected technology to have such a big impact on how I ran my business.
In this article, I’ll take you through my experience with dispatch software. From my initial doubts to the benefits it brought to my planning, drivers, and customers. If you run a taxi company, you know every minute counts. But how do you make the most of those minutes? That’s where the journey with modern taxi dispatch software begins.
What Is Taxi Dispatch Software and Why Do You Need It?
Taxi dispatch software is an automated system that schedules rides, assigns drivers, and keeps customers informed in real-time. Instead of answering phone calls and manually managing schedules, everything happens through one centralized digital platform.
My old system worked fine — until I started to grow. With five drivers, it turned into chaos: double bookings, confusion about pickup points, and unhappy customers. That’s when I discovered software could help bring back structure and calm.
How Does It Work in Practice?
When I switched to taxi dispatch software, I gained access to a dashboard where I could see where my drivers were in real-time. The software automatically matched the nearest driver to a customer, optimized routes, and sent notifications to passengers.
A customer would book a ride through the app — I’d get a notification immediately, so would the driver, and the customer could see exactly when the taxi would arrive. No more phone calls. No more confusion. Just a smooth experience for everyone involved.
Calculations: What Does It Deliver?
You might be wondering: what does it cost, and what do you get in return? Here’s how I evaluated it myself:
Time savings: Automation saved me an average of 2 hours a day on planning.
Cost savings: Fewer misunderstandings meant fewer missed rides.
More rides: Customers received quicker service, which led to more bookings.
Customer satisfaction: My Google reviews rose from an average of 3.8 to 4.6 stars.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is taxi dispatch software hard to install?
Not at all. Most solutions like Codico.io offer installation support and are fully cloud-based. You can get started in a single day.
What if my drivers aren’t tech-savvy?
I had the same thought, but the interface is so intuitive that even my oldest driver uses it without any problems.
Do I need to invest in expensive hardware?
No. Everything works via smartphones or tablets. If you already have a working phone, you're good to go.
Is it suitable for small businesses?
Absolutely. I started with just three vehicles, and the software easily scaled as I grew.
Reflection: What Did It Teach Me?
What surprised me the most was how much peace of mind it brought. I could finally focus on improving service instead of constantly putting out fires. The system gave me insights into who was driving the most, where the majority of requests came from, and how I could optimize my pricing.
The switch wasn’t just a business decision — it was a personal one. Less stress, more clarity, and ultimately: more profit.
Conclusion: Taxi Dispatch Software Is Not a Luxury, But a Necessity
In a time when customers expect everything to be fast, clear, and reliable, taxi dispatch software is an essential component. It makes your business more efficient, more customer-focused, and ready for the future.
My advice? Start small, but think big. Whether you’re just getting started or have been active for years — the right system can transform your taxi business. And believe me: you’ll never want to go back to the old way.

How Does Software Build Routes
In the modern world the transportation industry is booming, but at the same time it is under scrutiny. Societies examine transportation costs from a lot of different angles. Deliveries have to be fast, reliable, and ecological - to name just a few from the long list of expectations.
Fortunately, the solution is already here. Route planning and optimization software can handle most of the above concerns with just a few clicks.Route planning software helps businesses plan and schedule multi-stop delivery routes in the most efficient way possible using sophisticated algorithms. Some also call it route optimization software or routing and scheduling software
In this kind of software the algorithms used often suggest routes that maximize effectiveness. They help reduce vehicle wear-and-tear, fuel consumption, driver working time, and, what’s becoming increasingly important, CO2 emission. Implementing the proper route planning and optimization software can bring nothing other than gain.
How Does Software Route Planning Work
Routing is the process that software uses to plan and guide a journey through a network of shared roads. Using historical data and real-time data analytics, routing software enables transportation firms to design routes within their systems.
The streets a driver can take to save time and fuel while bearing in mind an organisation's business objectives are automatically planned by route optimisation software. The intended route is significantly impacted by real-time traffic and weather analysis.
To determine the most efficient path to the location, the software incorporates GPS. The route estimates also take into account the current volume of traffic, planned and enforced road repairs, geological hazards, and other factors. The preferences and unique circumstances of the passengers must also be taken into account.
The software then maps the ideal path that satisfies all of the specified requirements as laid out by the user after all of these components have been thoroughly examined. The time needed to finish the journey is then roughly estimated.
The Technology Behind Routing Software
This system uses a number of data sources, including aerial photos, topographic information, and more, to produce precise road maps that can be used for a variety of tasks in addition to driving.
GIS applications can predict travel times along a specific path, calculate driving times between locations, and find safe alternatives if one choice is not the best. To estimate traffic volume, it makes use of information from the road system, stops and drop-off locations, as well as statistics from public transportation.
Routing software like QRyde use route planning algorithms that incorporate real-time information like traffic, weather, accessible trips, and passenger counts.
The route software system can use artificial intelligence and machine learning to plan the most effective routes that can save time and fuel once it has compiled a database of passengers' pick-up and drop-off locations, special requirements, and load times.

2021 honda odyssey vs 2021 toyota sienna
Tumblr media
#2021 honda odyssey vs 2021 toyota sienna free
#2021 honda odyssey vs 2021 toyota sienna windows
There is more on the technology front that favors the new Honda Odyssey. With two more forward gears than the Sienna's automatic, it's no surprise that the Odyssey is more efficient while cruising at highway speeds. Every 2021 Odyssey gets Honda's 10-speed automatic transmission and compares favorably to the Sienna's 8-speed unit. The 2021 Honda Odyssey returns an EPA-estimated highway mpg rating higher than the 2020 Toyota Sienna's, thanks in part to its newly standard transmission. As we've covered so far, the Odyssey is the more advanced minivan, which extends to its powertrain. What do the above features have in common? They're all only available on one of these minivans: the 2021 Honda Odyssey! Other Key Differences Between the Odyssey & Siennaīoth the 2020 Toyota Sienna and 2021 Honda Odyssey indeed offer affordable pricing, a suite of safety and driver-assist features, V6 performance and seating for up to eight, but that's where most of the similarities end. How would you like to have an in-cabin camera that lets you keep an eye on the kiddos in the second and third rows? How about an intercom system, where you can speak directly to back passengers through the minivan's rear speakers? A built-in vacuum would certainly come in handy when spills and messes occur during your family's travels. This upgraded rearview camera is only available on pricier 2020 Sienna trims. The 2020 Sienna can be equipped with a backup camera that also includes a bird's-eye view angle, but it will cost you. Every new Odyssey minivan comes with Honda's Multi-Angle Rearview Camera that boasts normal, top-down and wide viewing angles. When it comes to an advanced interior with innovative amenities, the 2021 Odyssey is leaps and bounds ahead of the aging 2020 Sienna. Your onboard crew will thank you for selecting the Odyssey, which has more than 3 inches of additional legroom in its middle row. Honda's Odyssey tops the Toyota Sienna in legroom for middle- and back-row passengers by a wide margin. The overall passenger volume of these two minivans may seem similar at first glance, but when you break it down by first-, second- and third-row legroom, you notice something. When the second- and third-row seats in these minivans are folded down, the Honda offers more cargo space, 8 cubic feet more than the Toyota! While both cargo holds expand to hold a lot of gear, the Odyssey gives you more space for the unexpected. The 2021 Odyssey is over five inches longer than Toyota's 2020 Sienna, and that translates to more space within the cabin for both passengers and cargo. After all, it's what's inside that counts! However, starting prices and dimensions don't tell the whole story. The 2021 Honda Odyssey and 2020 Toyota Sienna feature a similar starting MSRP and similar exterior dimensions, so some shoppers may conclude that there's not a big difference between these two minivans.

Feel free to reach out to our team if you would like further details following this head-to-head comparison. The team at Stirling Honda can answer any questions you may have regarding the Honda Odyssey and its relation to the competition. Let's dig deeper to see any advantages one minivan may have over the other, and help you find the right vehicle for your family. In the comparison table above, we've reviewed some of the key differences between these two minivans. Still, the Sienna puts up a good fight and is a worthy competitor to Honda's popular minivan. Honda's Odyssey minivan goes up against the Toyota Sienna and holds its own, thanks to its spacious cabin and innovative and class-exclusive features. If you are shopping for a new minivan for your family, then you're sure to have the new 2021 Honda Odyssey on your list.
#2021 honda odyssey vs 2021 toyota sienna windows
With dual power-sliding rear doors, large windows for great visibility and easy ingress and egress, minivans are ideal for busy and active families on the go. When it comes to dedicated family vehicles, nothing tops a minivan.

Chapter 14
Jo POV
The chunk of Krayt dragon meat slowly roasted in front of a random engine, Jo’s eyes lazily following the motion from her seat a few feet away. Din stood behind her, watching the meat spin, mindlessly running his fingers over Jo’s braid until Peli appeared off to their right.
“All right, here’s the deal,” she started, clapping her hands. “A Mandalorian covert is close. It’s in this sector, one system over.”
“Are they the ones that left Nevarro?” Din asked. Jo knew he was trying to keep his composure but she could still hear the way his voice spiked with a tinge of hope. His hand moved from her hair, gently cupping her shoulder to ground himself and she automatically covered it, giving it a quick squeeze.
“Don’t know,” Peli replied with a shrug, shifting her weight. “All I know is that the contact will lead you to them.” Jo tried not to get her hopes up but unconsciously squeezed Din’s hand tighter.
“How much will it cost me?” Din grunted, shifting his weight, pressing his thigh into Jo’s back. Just as Peli opened her mouth to answer, a confused and slightly concerned string of indiscernible words floated from the hull of the ship.
“I got him,” Jo snorted, squeezing Din’s hand again before getting to her feet. Din and Peli’s voices were a hum in the background as she wandered onto the ship, finding the kid by the way his eyes caught the dim light. “What’s up, munchkin?”
“Eh, eh,” he whimpered plaintively. His soft features contorted, his bottom lip quivering as he reached for Jo and her heart almost broke until she picked him up. His expression brightened instantly, showing no signs of the pitiful look creasing his features seconds before, making soft happy sounds.
“You’re too good at that, kid,” Jo teased, rolling her eyes when the kid’s smile grew and he cooed loudly. Jo shook her head, bringing him closer to her face as she walked back into Tatooine’s dry air, blowing raspberries against his cheek, sending him into a laughing fit. She laughed along with him, pressing a kiss to his head before scanning the hangar for Din, nearly bursting into another round of giggles. He had both hands resting on his hips, balancing all his weight on one leg, and looking down at Peli, his irritation hanging like a veil around him.
“What do you mean ‘mitigating’?” Din enunciated just loud enough for Jo to hear from her spot on the ramp. Four heads snapped towards the door of the hangar when another figure appeared and Jo raised a brow, studying the amphibious creature. “I’m not a taxi service.”
“Debatable,” Jo mumbled under her breath, noticing the minute turn of Din’s helmet. She didn’t even bother covering her amusement and turned back to their new passenger, letting the conversation drift into the background as she studied the woman moving closer. Once the frog…lady…stopped at Peli’s side, Jo moved a little closer, shifting the kid on her hip, narrowing her eyes at the unfamiliar sounds falling from the mechanic's lips.
“She said her husband has seen them,” Peli relayed, glancing over at Jo briefly.
“Do you know her husband?” Din asked, crossing his arms and shifting his helmet as he watched the woman walk off towards the Crest.
“No. I met her ten minutes before you walked in,” Peli confessed offhandedly.
“Oh for kriffs sake,” Jo snorted, dropping her head forward. Din nudged her arm, jerking his head towards the ship in an unspoken request before rounding on Peli again. Jo trudged after the frog lady with an exhausted huff, catching a glimpse of her disappearing into the cockpit. The kid started to wiggle around in her arms, babbling nonsense and pointing at the ladder; Jo hadn’t the slightest clue what he was saying and just nodded, making her way through the hull.
The kid had started ‘talking’ more if it could be called that, but neither recognized the language. He added inflection on certain sounds, waving his hands around like he was telling the most riveting story and Jo wished she could understand him. To have another way to connect with their foundling but their ignorance didn’t seem to bother him. Jo nodded along as he rambled on, tightening her hold on him as she climbed towards the cockpit, setting him on the floor so she could hoist herself through the opening.
“Come on, munchkin,” she urged, pausing for the door to slide open. The frog lady looked up at her with wide, concerned eyes and Jo offered her a soft smile, feeling a bit better when the other woman seemed to relax slightly. The kid had already made his way to the empty chair, dragging himself onto the seat, his short legs kicking in an attempt to propel himself forward. Jo laughed softly and lifted him off the edge, rolling her eyes at his angry protest and dropping into her chair, hugging the foundling to her chest. No matter how hard she tried to calm him, the kid was not having it and eventually climbed down again and Jo didn’t have the energy to fight him. She smiled when he squealed excitedly at the thump of boots on the ladder, Din’s soft ‘hey buddy’ reaching her ears.
“Go rest,” Din sighed, appearing behind her chair, fitting his hands to the curve of her shoulders.
“Alright,” Jo grumbled, resting her head against the seat, staring up at his seemingly endless visor.
“Just don’t hog the whole bunk,” he teased, squeezing her traps.
“Or what?” she sassed with a smirk.
“Want a repeat of the chair incident? Because according to you, my ass is heavy,” Din reminded her, running his hands across her shoulder and down her arms.
“Fine, I’ll leave some room for you,” Jo chuckled. She glanced over when she noticed the flash of movement next to her, narrowing her eyes at their temporary passenger when she noticed the forlorn look on her face. Jo cleared her throat and stood quickly, earning a confused head tilt from her Mandalorian but she shook her head. “I’ll see you soon.”
“The kid should be down there already,” Din added, cupping the back of her head to tug her closer. Jo’s heart swelled when their foreheads met, the last bit of anxiety melting away. Din moved away first, and Jo took a long breath before making her way into the hull again. The kid nearly jumped out of his skin when her boots hit the metal floor and she shot him a suspicious look.
         “What are you doing?”
“Eh?” he grunted, pointing at the blue vacuum-sealed canister sitting next to a crate.
“No,” Jo scolded, beckoning him closer with one finger. “You leave those alone, you hear me?” He looked longingly back at the orange eggs floating in the canister before his ears started to droop and he waddled towards the bunk. Jo dropped onto the edge of the bunk with a sigh, groaning at the ache in her back when she leaned down to untie her boots. Not bothering to change into anything else, Jo deposited the kid into his hammock and crawled into the small bunk, letting out something between a groan and a sigh. Her eyes fluttered open when she felt the kid's gaze on her, smiling when she found his chin resting against the edge of his makeshift bed, watching her.
         “Mm brr,” he mumbled flatly.
“Goodnight, peanut,” Jo insisted, giving him one more stern look before closing her eyes. The Razor Crest barely started to rumble before she tumbled into the depths of sleep.
Tumblr media
Movement next to Jo forced her eyes open, her lids almost too heavy to keep open. Her heart thumped faster in her chest until a familiar warmth brushed against her face, calloused fingers brushing a strand of hair behind her ear, moving down to trace her hairline.
“Go back to sleep,” Din whispered, fitting her back flush against his armored chest.
“Cold,” was all Jo could force out, stuffing the worn blanket under her chin.
“Sorry, cyar’ika,” he chuckled, forcing the blanket between them.
“Kid sleeping?” she slurred, rolling enough to give the illusion she was looking at him even if her eyes were still closed.
“No,” Din grunted, the fabric of his flight suit swooshing as he leaned closer, lowering his voice. “He was eating her eggs.”
“No, he wasn’t,” Jo gasped, feeling more awake than before. Din dropped his helmet onto her shoulder, nodding against her.
“Menace,” he managed and Jo snorted loudly, hiding her face in the blanket.
“I told him to leave them alone,” she assured, lifting her head to glare in the kid’s general direction.
“That really seemed to deter him,” Din quipped, earning him a smack to the arm.
“Mir’sheb,” (Smartass) Jo grumbled, rolling away from him again. Din chuckled under his breath and pulled her closer, borderline nuzzling against her shoulder the best he could with his helmet on.
“Go back to sleep. I didn’t mean to wake you,” he mumbled, wedging his hand under her side, fitting his knees behind hers. It didn’t take long for sleep to seduce her again but just before the world around her fell away, she heard the rumble of Din’s voice but she was too far gone to make any sense of it.
Tumblr media
The finally warm body behind her was violently ripped away seconds before the deafening blare of alarms reached Jo’s ears.
“What the -” Jo cried, shooting off the mattress.
“Stay here,” Din barked, punching the panel on the outside of the bunk. Before she could get another word out the door slid shut and he was gone. The kid’s head popped up, peering over the side of his hammock as Jo rubbed the grit from her eyes.
“Hey, peanut,” she yawned, stretching her arms as far as she could. She jolted when the kid threw a stubby leg out of his hammock and she immediately grabbed him before he fell. “I would’ve helped you.” He blinked up at her before shrugging his little shoulder and curling up in her lap, making soft happy noises into her tunic. Jo shimmied backward until she bumped into the wall, dragging the blanket over them, and proceeding to run her fingers over the slight wrinkles on the kid’s head.
With the bunk door closed, Jo couldn’t hear if Din was talking to anyone and she wondered what happened that sent the alarms off. Although, she was only left to wonder for a few minutes. She was pressed into the wall when the Crest suddenly took off but she quickly adjusted, instinctively squeezing the kid closer. Jo did her best to keep them steady as the Crest twisted, pressing her against the storage panel, the metal digging into her exposed arm. The kid giggled, raising his hands over his head, leaning his head back to stare up at Jo but his laughter tapered off when he saw her expression.
“Eh, eh,” he muttered, his forehead wrinkling.
“Stay still,” Jo hissed, scrambling when the Crest banked hard to the left, sending them sliding towards the door. A startled half-shout echoed through the bunk when they were thrown into the wall shared with the fresher, Jo barely turn to shield the kid. Her shoulder took the brunt of the hit and she hissed through her teeth, letting the g-force push her against the wall. She froze when the pressure suddenly ceased and they hung in the air for a terrifying few seconds before her stomach dropped. With nothing to hold them down, Jo could feel her weight being lifted from the bunk, her pulse thundering in her ears. She scrambled for anything to hold onto, curling the kid into her chest, her fingers only grazing the shelf when the engines kicked on again. Jo groaned as her tailbone connected with the bunk, sending a bolt of pain up her spine but she could only focus on it for a second before she was forced against the back wall.
The kid whined in her arms as they bounced against the metal walls, Jo’s head knocking against the unforgiving surface when they made another hard turn. The sudden screeching of metal against a hard surface was deafening, seeming almost endless until they came to a rough stop, teetering for a few seconds in silence. The hull outside the door groaned and creaked as Jo’s head spun, the sudden ache in her temple making her eyes heavy. Just as she was about to move a thunderous crack echoed around them, followed by the same weightless feeling in her stomach. Jo only had a second to check on the kid before her head connected with the wall again, plunging her into darkness.
Tumblr media
Din POV
As soon as Din’s eyes opened he groaned; the faint pulsing in his head and aching in his back making him want to put his head back down. He forced himself to his feet, searching the cockpit, immediately finding the frog lady curled up on the floor, shivering. Din dropped down on one knee at her side, gently shaking her shoulders, stopping his flinch when she startled, screeching out a string of words he still didn’t understand. She turned away from him, chattering anxiously and pointing at the door.
“I’ll find your eggs, don’t worry,” Din assured, squeezing her arm as he got to his feet. He tried to ignore his racing heart, clenching his jaw as he strained to hear Jo or the kid moving around. His boots thumped against the floor and he held onto the ladder, scanning the mangled remains of the hull, his heart plummeting. “Damn it.” Din blew out a long breath and looked over at the bunk, his lungs seizing when he realized the door was open. Tripping over the debris littering the floor, Din nearly fell into the bunk, catching himself on the doorframe at the last second. He felt like he could’ve cried, his knees nearly buckling when he found Jo’s curled up form in the back corner but the kid was nowhere in sight.
“Where are you?” Din mumbled, carefully stepping around the tattered remains of his things, keeping an eye out for the glowing canister as well. He tried not to roll his eyes when he heard the distressed babbling from the cockpit. “Hang on, I’m looking for your eggs!” Din brushed aside loose items, his eyes landing on a taller shape hidden by a blanket; he pulled the blanket away and froze.
“Patu!” the kid exclaimed, his ears lifting expressively as he stared wide-eyed up at Din with an egg a few inches from his mouth. Din stood frozen in shock for a second too long, the kid slurping the egg down snapping him out of his trance.
“We told you not to do that!” Din hissed, slamming the canister’s lid shut and quickly lifting it out of the kid’s reach. “Found them!” He eyed the contents, shifting his gaze to the kid when he burped, looking extremely pleased with himself, to Din’s dismay. “How many did you eat?” The kid ignored his question, his huge eyes still focused on the eggs floating in his father’s hands; Din’s head snapped towards the bunk when he heard a faint groan, clambering back towards the sound.
“Din?” Jo groaned quietly. His heart nearly stopped when her eyes fluttered open, weakly rolling up to look at him, and an unabashed whimper fell from his lips.
“Thank the Maker,” Din whispered shakily, slumping into the doorframe. “Just - just stay still for a minute.” Din looked between a slow-moving Jo and the ladder, forcing himself to return the frog lady's eggs before worrying about Jo. He grabbed a blanket as an afterthought before pulling himself through he hole in the floor. The amphibious woman made a high-pitched screeching sound, dragging the canister of her young closer, giving Din what he assumed was a smile. He offered her a stiff nod before jumping off the ladder, nearly tackling Jo when he turned around, teetering on his toes before catching his balance.
“It’s gone,” Jo breathed, standing stiff as a board, faint shivers shaking her shoulders.
“It’s in rough shape but nothing that can’t be fixed,” Din counter, his voice pitching up in confusion.
“M-my armor,” Jo whimpered, covering her mouth with both hands and Din’s eyes widened.
“No, no,” Din rushed out, engulfing her in a hug, cradling the back of her head. “I moved it, it’s safe.”
“What?” she croaked, lifting her head to meet his gaze. Din felt his face flush, stopping himself from bashfully dropping his head, and gently carded through her hair to keep his shaky hands busy.
“When - when we weren’t talking…I-I took it into the storage room.”
“Why?” Jo muttered, her features softening with the knowledge that it was safe.
“I, well, uh…c-cleaned it,” Din stuttered, shifting his weight, rocking Jo with him.
“You did?” she whispered, her deep green eyes shining with an emotion Din tried not to get stuck on.
“Yeah. In case - in case you wanted to wear it again,” Din confessed, the inside of his helmet suddenly feeling uncomfortably warm. Jo opened her mouth, her tongue curling a few times like she was trying to form words but nothing came out and she just stared up at him. She came back to herself when she violently shuddered and Din could see the goosebumps blooming across her arms. “You need to get more layers on.”
“Where are we?” Jo asked, twisting enough to look through the tear in the ship.
“No idea,” Din sighed, unwinding himself from around Jo to rub her arms, creating desperately needed warmth. “All I know is that it’s an ice planet that isn’t Hoth.”
“You know, when I complained about sand, I didn't think you’d go to the other extreme,” Jo teased, rolling her lips into her mouth to hide a smile. Din bent forward to drop his head onto her shoulder with a hoarse laugh, relaxing into the familiar ease of their relationship.
“Trust me, I’d much rather have you on a warm, beachy planet,” he snorted, continuing to create friction between his hands and any of her exposed skin.
“Oh, what? S-seeing me in six layers of clothes doesn’t get you all hot and bothered,” Jo chuckled, curling her arms against her chest for warmth.
“I wouldn’t say that,” Din drawled, earning another soft laugh from her. “Now, speaking of layers of clothing, you need to get warm. Let me get our passenger out of the cockpit and you can have some privacy to get changed.”
“S-Sounds go-od,” Jo agreed, her teeth starting to chatter. Din gave her a stiff nod, unsure of leaving her without his added warmth for too long; the kid babbled at their feet, tugging on the edge of Din’s boot, blinking up at him.
“Stay here, buddy,” Din instructed, glancing at Jo with a sigh and pulling her along with him. They fumbled around to get up the ladder, Jo shuffling off to the side to let Din through, shuttering constantly and his anxiety spiked. The frog lady croaked and garbled at him, putting up a slight fight as he tried to usher her into the hull but went nonetheless.
“I-I’ll be d-d-down soon-n,” Jo managed, wrapping her arms around herself, aggressively rubbing the exposed skin. Din worked his jaw a few times before disappearing below, giving her the privacy he promised. He stood at the bottom of the ladder for a few seconds, trying to calm his racing mind, moving towards a discarded blanket before he knew what he was doing. Din fumbled around to cover the hole in the hull, feeling the need to release some of the pent-up nerves bubbling under his skin. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, he started to notice that having Jo and the kid around brought out a talkative side he didn’t know he had. Din found himself mindlessly narrating his thoughts more often, not expecting a reply but Jo still listened intently, and he ultimately felt lighter when he wasn’t holding everything in.
“If you hadn’t guessed, we’re in a tight spot,” he rambled, looking for a place to attach the blanket, their passenger turning her attention to him. “The main power drive isn’t responding, and the hull’s lost its integrity. I suspect the temperature will drop significantly when night falls. I’ll have a better prospect at that time.” Din wedged the edge of the blanket into gaps where the metal had bent and twisted, leaning back to assure it would hold. The woman started to croak in her unfamiliar language again and it still meant nothing to Din; he huffed under his breath, resting the bottom of his helmet against his pauldron.
When he said nothing she made a huffing sound and fell quiet, turning back to the canister at her side, running a loving hand over the glass. Din took a deep breath, letting his head hang for a second before looking under his arm, watching the kid happily nibble on a snack Din gave him to keep him occupied. He secretly hoped it would stop him from staring hungrily at the frog lady’s eggs too. Din darted his eyes to the ladder briefly before returning to his task, taking a step back, waiting to see if the blanket stayed in place. When it didn’t move he started rearranging the crates scattered around the floor, using them to hold the bottom of the makeshift barrier in place. He let out a long breath when the howling wind outside wasn’t whipping against him anymore, hoping his work would hold up for now.
Din looked over his shoulder when he heard boots hit the steel floor, smiling softly to himself. Jo looked like she could barely move, multiple layers bulging under her thick cloak but even from where he stood, he could tell she at least wasn’t shivering anymore. She worked her way around the clutter in the hull, offering the frog lady a gentle smile, and brushing her hand over the kid’s head as she passed.
“Better?” Din asked, holding his palm out to her. Jo grabbed his hand, squeezing his fingers with a tight smile.
“I’m warm,” she countered with a faint shrug, letting their hands hang between them. Din nodded once, pulling her a little closer but trying to stop her from pressing against his frosted armor. Before Din could say anything else, a flurry of croaks and grunts filled the ship and Din stifled a loud sigh, stepping to the side to see the frog lady staring at them.
“I’m sorry, lady. I don’t understand frog,” Din huffed, rolling his eyes when Jo giggled. Their passenger’s eyes narrowed and he bit his tongue, holding back the irritations bubbling up; he took an exaggerated breath, blowing it out slowly. “Whatever it is, it can wait until morning.”
“Let’s try and get some rest,” Jo offered quietly, squeezing Din’s hand to get his attention.
“I recommend you get some sleep,” Din aimed at the frog lady, tilting his head down to drive his point home. When she only huffed, Din’s eyelids fluttered and he relaxed slightly; Jo pulled her hand away, moving to clean up the kid’s snacks, mumbling quietly to him. Din tried not to sigh again as he lowered himself to the floor, biting back a groan at the tightness in his lower back and shoulders. His insulated flight suit kept him warm but he could still faintly feel the cold durasteel under his ass and tried to ignore it.
He angled his head back as Jo stepped over his legs, holding a grumpy kid under the arms, offering him to Din. She dropped onto the floor next to him, shuttered briefly before wiggling closer to his side, pressing them together from shoulders to toes. The kid twisted around in his lap, occasionally let out a frustrated grunt until Din let him move freely. Jo pulled a blanket over herself, tucking it under her chin, the kid disappearing under it as well, and she rested her temple against his pauldron.
“Don’t do that,” Din chided softly, just barely lifting his shoulder to dislodge her. “Watch out.” Jo lifted her head, her brows pinching together, a flash of hurt passing over her face. Din gently freed his arm from between them, lifting it over her head, and pulling her into his side. “No cold armor here.”
“Good point,” Jo snickered, any trace of sadness gone in an instant. She cuddled closer to his side, draping the blanket half over her face. The hull fell quiet aside from their shallow breathing until Jo jolted, lifting the blanket, a fond smile spreading across her face. The kid had climbed up her legs, stumbling around before plopping down into the dip between their hips, leaning against the space where their sides met. Din glanced at their passenger one more time before looking down at the kid’s drooping ears and smiled, pulling Jo a little closer and let himself drift off.

How Does a Rectifier Work?
Rectifier, device that converts alternating electric current into direct current. It may be an electron tube (either a vacuum or a gaseous type), vibrator, solid-state device, or mechanical device. Direct current is necessary for the operation of many devices such as laptop computers, televisions, and certain power tools.
If only one polarity of an alternating current is used to produce a pulsating direct current, the process is called half-wave rectification. When both polarities are used, producing a continuous train of pulses, the process is called full-wave rectification.
You may wonder how power lines send electric currents across long distances for different purposes. And there are different "types" of electricity. The electricity that powers electric railway systems may not be appropriate for household appliances like phones and television sets. Rectifiers help by converting between these different types of electricity.
Bridge Rectifier and Rectifier Diode
AC DC rectifier lets you convert from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). AC is current that switches between flowing backwards and forwards at regular intervals while DC flows in a single direction. They generally rely on a bridge rectifier or a rectifier diode.
All rectifiers use P-N junctions, semiconductor devices that let electric current flow in only a single direction from the formation of p-type semiconductors with n-type semiconductors. The "p" side has an excess of holes (locations where there are no electrons) so it is positively charged. The "n" side is negatively charged with electrons in their outer shells.
Many circuits with this technology are built with a bridge rectifier. Bridge rectifiers convert AC to DC using its system of diodes made of a semiconductor material in either a half wave method that rectifiers one direction of the AC signal or a full wave method that rectifies both directions of the input AC.
Semiconductors are materials that let current flow because they're made of metals like gallium or metalloids like silicon that are contaminated with materials like phosphorous as a means of controlling current. You can use a bridge rectifier for different applications for a wide range of currents.
Bridge rectifiers also have the advantage of outputting more voltage and power than other rectifiers. Despite these benefits, bridge rectifiers suffer from having to use four diodes with the extra diodes compared to other rectifiers, causing a voltage drop that decreases the output voltage.
Silicon and Germanium Diodes
Scientists and engineers generally use silicon more frequently than germanium in creating diodes. Silicon p-n junctions work more effectively at higher temperatures than germanium ones. Silicon semiconductors let electric current flow more easily and can be created with lower costs.
These diodes take advantage of the p-n junction to convert AC to DC as a sort of electric "switch" that lets current flow in either the forward or reverse direction based on the p-n junction direction. Forward biased diodes let current continue to flow while reverse biased diodes block it. This is what causes silicon diodes to have a forward voltage of about 0.7 volts so that they only lets current flow if it's more than volts. For germanium diodes, the forward voltage is 0.3 volts.
The anode terminal of a battery, electrode or other voltage source where oxidization occurs in a circuit, supplies the the holes to the cathode of a diode in forming the p-n junction. In contrast, the cathode of a voltage source, where reduction occurs, provides the electrons that are sent to the anode of the diode.
Half Wave Rectifier Circuit
You can study how half wave rectifiers are connected in circuits to understand how they work. Half wave rectifiers switch between being forward biased and reverse biased based on the positive or negative half cycle of the input AC wave. It sends this signal to a load resistor such that the current flowing through the resistor is proportional to voltage.
You can measure the voltage across the load resistor as the supply voltage Vs, which is equal to the output DC voltage Vout. The resistance associated with this voltage also depends on the diode of the circuit itself. Then, the rectifier circuit switches to being reverse biased in which it takes the negative half cycle of the input AC signal. In this case, no current flows through the diode or the circuit and the output voltage drops to 0. The output current is, then, unidirectional.
Full wave rectifiers, in contrast, use the entire cycle (with positive and negative half cycles) of the input AC signal. The four diodes in a full wave rectifier circuit are arranged such that, when the AC signal input is positive, the current flows across the diode from D1 to the load resistance and back to the AC source through D2. When the AC signal is negative, the current takes the D3-load-D4 path instead. The load resistance also outputs the DC voltage from the full wave rectifier.
The average voltage value of a full wave rectifier is twice that of a half wave rectifier, and the root mean squared voltage, a method of measuring AC voltage, of a full wave rectifier is √2 times that of a half wave rectifier.
Rectifier Components and Applications
Most of the electronic appliances in your household use AC, but some devices like laptops convert this current to DC before using it. Most laptops use a type of Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS) that lets the output DC voltage more power for the size, cost and weight of the adapter.
SMPS work using a rectifier, oscillator and filter that control pulse width modulation (a method of reducing the power of an electric signal), voltage and current. The oscillator is an AC signal source from which you can determine amplitude of current and the direction it flows. The laptop's AC adapter then uses this to connect to the AC power source and converts the high AC voltage to low DC voltage, a form it can use to power itself, during charging.
Some rectifier systems also use a smoothing circuit or capacitor that lets them output a constant voltage, instead of one that varies over time. The electrolytic capacitor of smoothing capacitors can achieve capacitances between 10 to thousands of microfarads (μF). More capacitance is necessary for greater input voltage.
Other rectifiers make use of transformers which alter voltage using four-layered semiconductors known as thyristors alongside diodes. A silicon-controlled rectifier, another name for a thyristor, uses a cathode and an anode separated by a gate and its four layers to create two p-n junctions arranged one on top of the other.
Uses of Rectifier Systems
The types of rectifier systems vary across applications in which you need to alter voltage or current. In addition to the applications already discussed, rectifiers find use in soldering equipment, electric welding, AM radio signals, pulse generators, voltage multipliers and power supply circuits.
Soldering irons that are used to connect parts of electric circuits together use half wave rectifiers for a single direction of the input AC. Electric welding techniques that use bridge rectifier circuits are ideal candidates for providing supply steady, polarized DC voltage.
AM radio, which modulates amplitude, can use half wave rectifiers to detect changes in electric signal input. Pulse generating circuits, which generate rectangular pulses for digital circuits use half wave rectifiers for changing the input signal.
Rectifiers in power supply circuits convert AC to DC from different power supplies. This is useful as DC is generally sent across long distances before it is converted to AC for household electricity and electronic devices. These technologies make great use of the bridge rectifier that can handle the change in voltage.
Electric vehicles have lots in common with gasoline-powered cars—room for four-plus passengers, range of several hundred miles, good safety—plus that one big difference: recharging with a plug at versus refueling from a pump. We’ve all pumped gas and know it’s a five- to 10-minute process; we suspect recharging takes longer and we know there are far fewer charging stations than the 125,000 U.S. public gas stations.
Here’s what you need to know about buying, installing and using the right EV charger. The more you know, the clearer it becomes that the unique aspects of EVs aren’t automatic disqualifiers.
Clearing Up the Range-Anxiety Misconception
With a gas-engine car, most owners drive until it’s low on fuel because gas stations are everywhere and gassing up is a quick stop. But empty-to-full charging is not what EV owners do most of the time. They top off every night or two, and as long as the car is charged in the morning, charging time doesn’t matter and range anxiety isn’t an issue for daily driving. Some use public charging, which means you do have to wait on the car. But 80% of charging is done at home, according to the JD Power U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home Charging Study
Range and charging time may be less of an issue if an EV is the second car. If an EV is the only car, for long summer or holiday trip, owners can do what owners of compact gasoline-powered sedans may do: Rent a midsize or larger SUV for that two-week vacation. Or find a hotel with on-site charging.
For those who charge at home, you need to have the right charging equipment, and the proper electrical supply.
With EV charging, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Electric vehicles have different charging capabilities and requirements and every owner also has their own driving needs.
Here’s a look at key aspects of choosing the right charging equipment, installing it properly and best practices for using EV charging accessories at home.
Do You Need to Buy an EV Charger When One Comes Free?
Every electric car comes standard with a portable charger. (This thick cable that plugs into a wall outlet and the car counts as a charger.) However, every manufacturer provides a different unit, with varying levels of charging capabilities. In some cases, the same manufacturer provides different standard charging equipment depending on which of its EV offerings you purchase or lease.
EV charging connector types: what they are and how they compare
Moving to an EV from a petrol car is fairly straightforward. All the controls are in the same place, and the steering wheel hasn't changed into a large carrot or anything like that.
The thing that is different, however, is the fuel - and that means a new type of fueling connector. EV charging connector is broadly similar to a petrol hose - they're a pipe the electricity comes down - but there are three distinct types of charger, and they might need an adapter depending on what's fitted on your new electric car.
Those types are Rapid, which is the fastest. Fast, which is not the fastest. And Slow, which you probably get the idea about.
Mercedes EQC review: shows how good premium EVs can be
Volvo XC60 Recharge review: this PHEV is great for space, comfort and family
Polestar 2 review: all-electric performance, powered by Google
Charging comes in either AC (for home chargers) or DC, and the amount of energy is measured in kilowatts.
Rapid chargers always have captive cables, so no need to bring your own, but the other kinds may require you to bridge the gap between charger and car yourself - your EV will come with a set of cables and adapters to do just this.
The market has yet to coalesce around one type of plug, and it can be quite complicated working out what goes where. We're here to help, and these are the most common connectors used on electric cars.
GB/T Charging Connectors
China, which has the world's largest electric car fleet, has its own charging connection. GB/T charging connectors again comes in AC and DC variants, the former with seven pins, and the latter with nine. Its plugs are circular, with a flattened edge, and larger than other types.
Type1 / CCS1 Conenctors
CCS, or combined charging system, is a beautifully elegant solution for fast DC charging. These are the original plugs, either Type 1 or Type 2, to which two more pins are added at the bottom. In the case of DC charging, these two lower pins participate in the charging itself and from the upper part only the communication pin and the earth conductor, which provides the reference point for the protection systems, are used. These connectors can withstand power of up to 350 kW.
It is currently the most popular type of DC connector. Type1 / CCS1 conenctors are common in the United States, while Type 2 CCS is used in Europe. The European Parliament's efforts to allow only CCS 2 and other plugs to be phased out of Europe have not been successful, but this standard is still winning, mainly because the car has only one socket. When using the CHAdeMO connector, the car must always have two sockets.
CCS are not compatible with CHAdeMO and GB / T charging stations because they use different communication protocolsa, so special adapters are needed and they are not easy to obtain.
