Avian Sanses: What they've lived through

( Avians = Violence mentioned. Also mentions of a famine.)

Axe is the oldest. He lived through the two biggest events of aviankind– the Famine, and The Unsettling. He was old enough to remember both times, but did suffer a lot of damage to his skull during The Famine that now causes memory lapses. It also means he’s slow to speak, and struggles to turn thoughts into coherent sentences. This did not make him any less intelligent, and he’s something of a folklore among Ancestor Avian.

He’s more instinctual than the majority of aviankind, but also doesn’t have as much magic. He’s also adapted to be almost silent on his feet and use his hands, teeth and feet in battle, as well as his eiderlades.

Dust was only a fledgling during The Famine, so he doesn’t quite remember it. However, he lived through the entirety of The Unsettling and had to face the terrors. As a Peregrine Falcon, he was one of the frontline fighters– meaning he saw and suffered through more than any of his birthflock had.

The PTSD and trauma left him cold, quiet, and calculating. He has a couple, small burn scars on his face and there’s evidence of his tail feathers having once been burned.

Killer was lucky enough to just have foggy memories of The Unsettling– clutching onto Dust’s back, burying himself in Dust’s scapular floof is one of the most prominent ones. He doesn’t remember a lot about it but it tends to haunt his dreams.

He’s unreasonably territorial about things he decides are his, which is likely a side-affect of the things he’s seen and gone through.

- gay (:

- "he/him" but sometimes prefers "it."

- probably autistic, probably self-diagnosed.

- i cannot overstate how obsessed this man is with teeth. it's borderline fetishistic. if any of his mammalian colleages don't take proper care of their teeth he will often force them into "emergency" dental procedures. usually just a cleaning, which he's shockingly good at, but he will spend the entire time frantically chastising the patient for "squandering their gift." he takes great pride in his dental work, far moreso than his surgical ventures. it's his passion vs. his job. (most definitely a hyperfixation.)

- he prefers travelling by car to flying after a traumatic experience when he was a youngster - when he was fledging, he was hit out of the sky by something and broke one of his wings. he can still fly, but avoids it unless absolutely possible. he's developed very strong legs as a result.

- bit of a motor enthusiast. he owns a red-and-cream 1933 Duesenberg SJ which he has nicknamed "Imogene." she is his pride and joy. he always dresses up in old-timey driving gear whenever he takes her for a spin.

- pretty much still lives in the 50s.

- did NOT lose his medical license, he just likes to joke about it to scare his patients. (whether he'll retain it after the Gravel Wars is another story, but RED does a good job of covering up his breaches of the hippocratic oath.)

- always has classical music and jazz playing in the infirmary.

- gave his Sniper (the only other avian on his team) a set of teeth just like his. less out of necessity and just because he thinks more birds should have them.

- LOVES crime novels, reads every night before bed. has a large collection of pulp krimi magazines from the 50s in their little plastic dust covers.

- also collects wet specimens of animals with birth defects. he collects a lot of things.

- least favourite medical procedure is anything involving broken bones - reminds him of bad things.

- he can spit his stomach acid as a defense mechanism. he doesn't like to do this since it's painful, but he absolutely will as a last resort.

- sadistic streak, naturally. switches from docile to dangerous in a moment's notice, usually on the battlefield.

- actually treats his team pretty well and with a level of professionalism - saves (most of) his crazy experiments for enemy prisoners and cadavers.

- knows too much.

Beatrix redesign + new lore

My original design was supposed to be a rough mock-up, so here’s a redesign with additional details, slight outfit and color changes.

The lore I talked about in my previous posts remains canon, but here’s some things i added! Lore dump ahead 🚨

When Beatrix was alive, she was known as Queen Cyra, the ruler of the Cygni-Columbidaen empire in the puenymph realm, named after the species of its leader (Latin names for doves and swans). She ruled by the principle of keeping the peace at any cost, seeing any behavior critical of her as a threat to the peace, followed by extreme punishment. Her empire functioned on the basis of constant surveillance and propaganda, spreading the idea she was “protecting“ her citizens like a loving, observant mother.

She used to have albinism, but the curse messed with her genes, making her lose this trait. This is relevant because according to legend, the first puenymph had albinism too, so it's seen as a desirable trait. Beatrix covered up the curse by wearing veils, less revealing clothing and a mask covering the lower half of her face.

But to spread her “ascension“ propaganda in the void, she did the opposite, covering up her healthy skin. She took on a new name too, because after her death, her empire collapsed, and she was recognized as the controlling ruler she actually was. In fact, her rule was SO dystopian that afterwards, the people of the puenymph realm made sure to remember her as a cautionary tale and do the opposite of everything she did 😭😭 except they didn’t fully achieve that because part of her agenda was judging a puenymphs worth by the rarity of the animal they can transform into, a system of oppression and discrimination of which the remnants are still present today.

Grian lore dropped

Oke then….Grian with holes instead of eyes in his face. And make it watcher

I imagine with this version people only had quick glances due to him covering his eyes with his wings, so they thought his eyes were just weird. No one ever questioned how he could see, even with his eyes covered, or why they were all black

im not even going to lie, him covering his eyes with his wings is completely taken from @xmaruu11 …ive been wanting to draw that and i finally have an excuse.

Curraak! silly lil barber (barbarian/fighter <3)

still working on his lore, but I have him as a path of the totem warrior with an eagle/hawk totem (not pictured bc i FULLY forgot). I kinda thought that, despite not being descended from birds at all, he'd be the type to "connect with his roots" and draw like. inspiration and power I guess from hawks and the natural world as a whole.

I think he would sort of lean into being a precision hunter like the hawks he emulates, leading to him becoming a mercenary for hire which I imagine is how he multiclassed into fighter

idk if this makes any sense it's been a hot sec since I built this character so I don't remember wtf I had in mind when I was making him lol but I've been on a drawing kick and wanted to post this

AU where Mumbo finds out Grian is a watcher and it quite literally goes to his head. Like Mumbo treats him as if hes a God, he worships the ground he walks on, anything Grian asks for "okay".

It starts to go to Grians head he knows in himself he's not fully a watcher more like half, he's not a God but he starts thinking like one. He starts making thing's happen that shouldn't be normal.

I think that the watchers at some point will think that Grian is trying to accept his destiny so they come down and attempt to take Grian. But of course he knows what happens if they take him. He's not going down without a fight. Like he wins by the power of love or something.

A parrot avian in some universes, a shapeshifted watcher in others, it’s a 50/50 which one I decided to go with

Avians in my mind take on the wing patterns of a bird they connect with, which usually happens at around 18-23. Instead of facial hair they grow feathers around their cheeks and in their hair.

His earring is a present from mumbo ^^

The gold detailing on his wings have the watcher symbol and suns on it, and his shoes have suns too! (why suns you may ask? “Grian” is the Irish word for sun, and according to my myth/history nerd friend there was an Irish sun goddess named Grian)

His ears and canine teeth are rounded! In contrast to half-vexes who’s features are sharper

His design is probably the one that keeps to the original skin the least, but it also happens to be one of my favourites to draw so

I don’t have much to say here, he’s just kinda silly? I suppose there’s the fact that I decided that convex gets a diamond as their shape, so he’s got some of that detailing

He was originally supposed to have glasses however I am terrible at remembering glasses even though I wear them so they just kinda vanished

His hair is probably one of the most fun to colour too:D

An elf (the antlers are accessories)

She’s got a whole bunch of little leaves everywhere:DD and some cute gold detailing too, otherwise a pretty simple design with not much to say on it

He’s got five visible places where I’ve snuck an “i” on him (but there’s one more on the bottom of his shoes)

The yellow In his hair also matches with my skizz, who has blue in his hair

Either a human or an avian, it’s another 50/50 and depends on what I went for with Grian as well if I have him included

If I go the avian route, her wings are small and usually kept under her jacket.

The moon detailing changes with the moon phase! Her hair also gets more floaty depending on how full the moon is

The knot on her shirt is in the shape of a moth

- Tango

A soot fairy, they’re known for working with and manipulating fire and creating machinery.

He’s got heels and he’s absolutely slaying. That’s really it I can’t pick my favourite detail it’s all fantastic. Look at it

I looked at fire/firemen vests for his jacket? That’s a fun fact

A creeper/goat hybrid

There’s like.. so many butterfly motifs on this man it’s fantastic. I also love the horizontal pupil

He looks like a mix between a tired dad and a mad scientist, which was initially not what I was going for but I’m keeping it
