AWS Cloud Migration: Why Dubai Businesses Are Making the Shift
Tumblr media
Introduction
Dubai, a global business hub known for its rapid innovation and futuristic vision, has been at the forefront of digital transformation. With enterprises striving to stay competitive and agile, cloud migration has become a strategic imperative. Among the leading cloud platforms, Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Dubai has emerged as the go-to solution for businesses. But why are so many companies in the region shifting to AWS? This article delves into the key drivers, benefits, and strategies behind this transformative move.
Understanding Cloud Migration with AWS
Cloud migration involves moving digital operations from on-premises servers to cloud-based infrastructure. AWS, a pioneer in cloud computing, provides scalable, secure, and cost-effective solutions that cater to businesses of all sizes. AWS migration services simplify the process by offering tools, frameworks, and support to ensure a seamless transition.
For Dubai's businesses, cloud migration isn't just a technological upgrade—it's a fundamental step toward embracing innovation and scalability in an increasingly digital economy.
Why Dubai Businesses Are Choosing AWS for Cloud Migration
Cost Efficiency One of the primary reasons businesses in Dubai migrate to AWS is cost savings. Maintaining on-premises IT infrastructure involves significant capital expenditures (CapEx) on hardware, software, and ongoing maintenance. AWS operates on a pay-as-you-go model, converting these costs into manageable operational expenses (OpEx).
Moreover, AWS offers cost optimization tools, such as AWS Cost Explorer and AWS Budgets, allowing businesses to monitor and control their expenses effectively.
Scalability and Flexibility Dubai is home to dynamic industries like retail, hospitality, and fintech, which experience fluctuating demands. AWS provides elastic scalability, enabling businesses to adjust their resources based on demand. Whether it's a peak shopping season or launching a new service, AWS ensures that companies can scale up or down without disruptions.
Global Reach with Local Presence AWS operates a vast network of data centers globally, ensuring minimal latency and high reliability. For Dubai-based businesses, AWS’s Middle East region (UAE) ensures compliance with local data residency laws and delivers faster performance for end-users in the region.
Enhanced Security Cybersecurity is a top priority for Dubai businesses, especially with the rise of cyber threats. AWS offers a robust security framework, including features like encryption, identity and access management (IAM), and continuous monitoring through tools like AWS CloudTrail and AWS Config. These ensure that sensitive data and applications remain protected.
Support for Innovation AWS fosters innovation by providing cutting-edge services in areas like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), and analytics. Dubai's businesses, especially in smart city initiatives and e-commerce, leverage these tools to stay ahead of the curve.
Key Benefits of AWS Cloud Migration
Improved Operational Efficiency By migrating to AWS, businesses can automate routine tasks, optimize workflows, and reduce the burden on IT teams. Tools like AWS Lambda and AWS Step Functions allow businesses to build serverless architectures, streamlining operations.
Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery AWS ensures high availability and disaster recovery with services like Amazon S3 for storage, Amazon RDS for managed databases, and AWS Backup. These solutions minimize downtime and protect critical business data, which is crucial for Dubai’s fast-paced markets.
Accelerated Time to Market The agility of AWS helps Dubai businesses launch products and services faster. AWS CloudFormation, for instance, automates infrastructure provisioning, enabling rapid deployment and iteration.
Sustainability Goals Dubai’s focus on sustainability aligns with AWS’s commitment to renewable energy. AWS data centers are designed for energy efficiency, helping businesses reduce their carbon footprint while achieving their green goals.
Industries Driving AWS Cloud Adoption in Dubai
E-commerce Dubai’s booming e-commerce sector benefits significantly from AWS's scalable and secure infrastructure. Services like Amazon CloudFront ensure faster content delivery, while AWS Marketplace provides easy access to pre-configured solutions.
Finance The financial sector in Dubai, driven by fintech innovation, leverages AWS for secure transaction processing and data analytics. AWS services like Amazon Athena and Amazon Redshift help financial institutions make data-driven decisions.
Healthcare Healthcare providers in Dubai are adopting AWS for secure patient data storage, telemedicine solutions, and AI-driven diagnostics. AWS HealthLake and Amazon SageMaker are popular tools in this domain.
Hospitality Dubai's world-renowned hospitality industry utilizes AWS for personalized guest experiences, booking system optimization, and real-time analytics.
Challenges and Solutions in AWS Cloud Migration
While the benefits of AWS cloud migration are evident, businesses must address certain challenges:
Skill Gaps Many organizations face a lack of skilled personnel to manage cloud infrastructure. AWS solves this with extensive training programs like AWS Training and Certification, as well as a global network of AWS-certified consulting partners.
Migration Complexity Moving legacy systems to the cloud can be complex. AWS Migration Hub simplifies the process by providing a centralized dashboard to track and manage migrations.
Cost Management Businesses must monitor cloud spending to avoid unnecessary expenses. AWS tools like Trusted Advisor and Reserved Instances help in optimizing costs.
Steps for a Successful AWS Cloud Migration
Assess and Plan Conduct a detailed assessment of existing infrastructure and identify workloads for migration. Use AWS tools like AWS Application Discovery Service for insights.
Choose the Right Migration Strategy AWS outlines six common strategies, known as the "6 Rs"—Rehost, Replatform, Repurchase, Refactor, Retire, and Retain. Select the strategy that best suits your business needs.
Leverage AWS Support Engage with AWS consulting partners in Dubai to navigate the migration journey. These experts bring local insights and technical expertise.
Optimize Post-Migration Continuously monitor and optimize workloads to maximize efficiency. Use services like AWS CloudWatch and AWS Auto Scaling for ongoing management.
Conclusion
Dubai’s businesses are embracing AWS cloud migration as a catalyst for innovation, agility, and growth. With its robust infrastructure, cost-effective solutions, and commitment to security, AWS empowers organizations to thrive in a competitive landscape. By overcoming migration challenges and leveraging AWS's advanced tools and services, Dubai-based enterprises can position themselves as leaders in the digital economy.
As Dubai continues its journey toward becoming a global tech hub, the shift to AWS is not just a trend but a strategic move that aligns with the city’s ambitious vision for the future.

In my parents' house is a photo of my great-grandfather, a photo that is over 100 years old. There's a couple of other photos of a similar age to that one I think around the place. There were hundreds dating back over 50 years in my grandparents' house and plenty that are well over 35 years old I can see in my parents' house.
Meanwhile, many of my photos from the 2005-2010 time-frame are gone forever because they were on Photobucket, which changed its terms, and the laptop I downloaded them all onto got smashed. They exist now only in the hard drive of a broken laptop that's full of aquarium sand (...long story).
Few digital records, least of all those managed by for-profit entities, will have a lifespan even close to that of a human brain.
Tech bros who think digital is forever and that uploading your consciousness to a computer is immortality crack me up. Like bro, you'd be "immortal" on the computer for like a year until your own company sends out some software update that makes you incompatible and whoops, there goes TechBro.soul into the great Recycling Bin in the sky

I love your au!!! I love how the hylian duo look like gremlins, I LOVE the expressions and sass constantly and the changes to the lore, the worldbuilding and also the emotions (OUCH). I love their relationship with purah and each other and the new champions. I love the depth you gave Yona and her relationship with Sidon and Mipha. I love how link feels comfortable talking to sidon in addition to sign, I don't know if he does that with anyone else but Zelda unless its absolutely necessary (eg: just launched out a cannon and is paragliding down, so hands are busy) (side note: i love how much of an adrenalin junky/gremlin he is!!)
I do got a few questions! Will the pair get the sheikah slate again (so say link has the slate and zelda the pad), and can both slates do the warping and item storage (food, ingredients, armor, weapons, etc) (if so: no WONDER link was so upset! His collection!)
Does link have access to the ultrahand abilities (ik you said not The ultrahand, but what about fuse or ascend or rewind etc?) Where is the mastersword??
Does Link still have the champions' abilities, or did he lose those when their spirits moved on at the end of botw?
I know these are a lot of questions but I can't stop thinking about it!! The last few updates sent me back rereading the whole au and now its just vibrating in my head and giving me no piece
This is long and rambly, just know I am very much enjoying this au! Its silly and fun and touching and cute. Thank you for working on it!!
Oo some notes (also ty for circling my au haha im glad other people fixate like i do)
(Prewarning— i did not finish totk despite putting triple hours in it, so a lot of this story is being written while playing, though i know the big broad strokes thanks to cultural osmosis and video essays. A lot of Familiar Familiar builds from my playthrough with BOTW over TOTK, so the sheikah influence is significantly stronger and I will always choose botw characterization over totk characterization as a result.)
That aside
1. Sheikah slate’s dead. Rest in pieces, link’s rare collectable korok poop. Purah’s extracting as much data as she can to put on the purah pad but you can see the dread in her eyes whenever she has to tell link resurrection is not possible.
2. No idea about the zonai arm powers yet— im thinking about ascend, but the longer i go through this story the less likely ill hand it to him just due to immersion breakage. He and zelda will be getting sheikah gadgets from purah though! Maybe ill have a scene of him wandering through the sky island shrines, but without zelda warning rauru he and sonia wouldnt have prepared anything for the hero of the future. (But i DO love ascension and fuse. Lowkey dislike the building mechanics from a concept art pov because the green glue makes me want to cry, but it’s FINE i GUESS)
2b. Master sword’s chilling in korok forest. Link put it back in this au because of Reasons (part of his and zelda’s characterization in this au is to discard their past roles and embrace the present, not as knight and princess but as hero and researcher. They both have to face the reality those roles aren’t dead, but it’s a work in progress. I may also never address it. This “one off hehe lemme draw some guys” idea quickly spiraled into a web comic series so apologies for the vagueness, because i too am watching them adventure with dread and awe and i don’t know where they’ll go with it. They literally write themselves.
3. Rip champions, their ghosts are Gone (but their influence remains. You go mipha, keep haunting the narrative girl, i love you)
I know that some of these story notes don’t quite match up to what totk states is stone cold canon, but that’s the joy of fan work! Anyways sorry for folks who i have NOT answered asks of— i have a lot of them and I’m much better at the drawing and writing part then the socialization aspect (please feel free to peak in to my zoo enclosure ever so often though. I need the enrichment)

Competence:
Tumblr media
Summary: Anakin is entranced by you as you lead the council in tactical planning and strategy. He has to get you away.
Warnings: Almost smut, suggestive, storage closet times!
Word count: 1,430
The Jedi Council chamber was filled with the usual air of solemnity as the council members gathered to discuss the latest developments in the Clone Wars. Anakin Skywalker sat among them, his focus divided between the strategic discussions and the presence of the one person who never failed to captivate his attention – you.
Every time he saw you in action, especially during council briefings, he was reminded of just how good a Jedi you were, just how amazing and… Competent. H was extremely powerful and naturally talented himself, but he was in awe of you.
The council meeting was in full swing, and you were seated at the centre of the long table, your data-pad displaying intricate battle plans and political schematics. Your voice, calm and measured, resonated through the chamber as you outlined your strategic recommendations.
"Based on the latest intelligence reports, it's imperative that we allocate additional forces to the Mid Rim to counter the Separatist advances," you explained, your eyes scanning the faces of the council members. "This will buy us time to bolster defences in other vulnerable sectors."
Your analysis was met with nods of approval from some of the council members, and Anakin couldn't help but feel a surge of pride in your abilities. It wasn't just your beauty that had drawn him to you; it was your intellect, your unwavering commitment to the Jedi Order, and your exceptional understanding in all matters related to the war.
As the meeting continued, Anakin found himself increasingly distracted by your presence. He watched as you deftly navigated the intricacies of galactic politics, your insights into military tactics, and your poised demeanour commanded respect from even the most seasoned Jedi Masters.  Even Yoda had stayed quiet during your explanations.
He longed to reach out and touch you, to convey the overwhelming emotions he felt in that moment, but the sanctity of the council chamber demanded silence. He ached for you though, squirming in his chair and trying to look like he way paying attention. It wasn’t working well. He tried to focus on the discussion at hand, but his mind kept wandering to the thoughts of you.
Today's council meeting was no different to the hundreds of others that he had to attend these days. But there was something about you today, a new confidence, you truly had the floor and attention of all the others. Your voice, calm and measured, filled the chamber as you laid out your strategic recommendations.
Anakin watched you intently. It was an intoxicating blend of competence and intellect that he found irresistibly attractive.
As the council meeting progressed, Anakin's mind swirled with images of you. He couldn't help but be drawn deeper into his own thoughts. The way your eyes sparkled with determination, the conviction in your voice, and the way you articulated your arguments with precision—all of it only heightened his desire for you.
He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his Jedi composure wavering as his thoughts strayed from the matters at hand.
While you debated and argued your points with the council members, Anakin's mind wandered to even more forbidden territory. He pictured you in private moments, the two of you sharing stolen kisses and tender embraces. The thought of your passion and your intellect combined made him flush with desire, and he discreetly adjusted his robe to conceal his growing arousal.
Anakin was so engrossed in his fantasies that he didn't notice the meeting coming to a close. Not until you rose from your seat and collected your data-pad, ready to leave as well. As you turned to head for the door, Anakin sprang up from his seat to follow you out.
The council members began to disperse, each returning to their respective duties. Anakin waited for the opportune moment, and when the last council member had left the chamber, he approached you with a determined stride.
You sensed his presence before he even spoke, and turned to face him with a curious expression on your face. "Anakin, is everything alright?" you asked, noting the intensity in his gaze.
Anakin took a step closer to you, his eyes raking over your form. Then he grabbed you by the top of your arm, and looked around the steadily emptying corridor.
“Come with me.”
You were taken aback by his urgency and thoroughly confused but you went along with him all the same. You trusted him.
Though you were questioning why as he led you into what looked like a cramped storage closet.
“Anakin- What-“
But he had already pounced on you, pressing you up against the door and kissing you like his life depended on it. Like he had been thinking about it.
You were startled but ultimately you gave in and let him and let him have his way. He got like this sometimes, it was exciting. You leaned into the kiss, hands moving up t wrap around his neck.
The two of you were intertwined for quite some minutes, he just kept going and you couldn’t bring yourself to complain or ask for an explanation. You couldn’t even bring yourself to worry over your not-so-hidden and very small location.
Anakin pulled back slightly and grinned hungrily at you, cheeks flushed with pleasure. You raise an amused eyebrow at him.
Anakin hesitated for a moment, his heart racing in his chest as he struggled to find the right words. "I just wanted to say… that was really impressive in there," he said finally, gesturing through the door towards the now-empty council chamber.
You felt a deep flush of satisfaction as you saw just how affected he was. You had no idea you would have such an impact on him. His admiration was flattering.
“You held yourself very well, you were so… The council is very lucky to have you.”
“Is that so?” You asked, smirking as you shifted, grinding your hips against his and feeling his erection pressing into your thigh. Feeling his idea meaning instinctively and loving it, loving the power that such a simple display had on him.
“Mhm…”
“Thank you,” you responded, “I aim to please.”
Anakin’s hands roamed up and down your body, his fingertips softly caressing your arms as he began to become more bold. “I’ve been thinking about you a lot lately.”
“You have? ” you asked, leaning your head back and closing your eyes. You could feel his warm breath against your neck and it sent shivers down your spine.
“You’re just so good at everything you do, it’s… intoxicating.”
“You really do have to stop flattering me,” you laughed, “I don’t know if I can handle it.”
“Yes you can, you can handle everything.” He kissed down your neck, “You handle me so well.” Anakin was getting more and more eager with every passing second. You let out a very soft moan as you felt the stubble on his chin scrape against your neck and shoulders, teasing you with his lips. You brought your hands up to his shoulder and ran your fingers down the length of his neck, softly tracing the outline of his collarbone.
“I try my best.”
“You never fail to impress me,” he sighed. Your eyes fluttered closed as Anakin dipped his head down to kiss you again.
Anakin held your face in his hands, gently caressing your skin with his thumb as he pressed his lips firmly against yours. He ran his tongue along your teeth and pushed his body closer to yours, feeling the way your curves fit against him. He couldn’t get enough of you, he wanted to feel you over and over.
Under the intensity of his touch you became bolder, your hands moving down to grip his hips and to pull him closer. Anakin moaned into your kiss as you tugged him down lower against you. He ran his hands up your back, tracing diagonal lines across your shoulders and down your sides. Anakin didn’t want to stop touching you, but he wanted more than just that.
He couldn’t work in this space. He needed somewhere where he could get to you more easily, where he could properly attend you. He pullback, pulling a small whine from your lips.
“We’re going to my quarters,” he whispered into your neck, “That way we don’t have to worry about anyone interrupting.”
“Alright,” you replied, eyes still closed trying to keep youself under contol, your head tilted back, “Lead the way.”
Anakin wrapped his arm around your lower back and pulled you towards him, pressing his lips to yours again as he pulled you out of the closet.

UltiHash’s Sustainable Data Infrastructure Tackles AI Storage Challenges
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/ultihashs-sustainable-data-infrastructure-tackles-ai-storage-challenges/
UltiHash’s Sustainable Data Infrastructure Tackles AI Storage Challenges
UltiHash, a provider of high-performance and eco-friendly data storage solutions, has launched its object storage platform to address critical issues in AI data storage. This development aims to resolve mounting challenges in the AI industry related to infrastructure costs and environmental sustainability. The new platform enhances performance for data-heavy applications, including generative AI and advanced analytics, offering scalable and sustainable solutions for data management.
As the AI industry grows, projected to reach $407 billion by 2027 according to Forbes, the demand for data storage has surged. AI model training, which relies on massive datasets, often strains current storage infrastructure due to inefficiency, leading to high costs and a significant environmental footprint. UltiHash’s new platform is designed to solve these issues, providing high-performance storage while reducing both operational expenses and environmental impact.
Key Features of UltiHash’s Platform
UltiHash’s platform introduces several key innovations, including:
Advanced Deduplication: Reducing data volumes by up to 60% by eliminating redundant data at the byte level, minimizing storage needs and bandwidth usage.
Scalability: Built for organizations with rapidly growing data needs, the platform scales easily to petabytes and beyond, supporting continuous data expansion.
Enhanced Performance: With 250% faster read speeds compared to AWS S3, the platform improves data throughput for both read and write operations, essential for high-performance applications.
Interoperability: Fully compatible with S3 APIs and designed for seamless integration with both cloud and on-premises infrastructures, including Kubernetes-native environments.
Data Resiliency: Built-in erasure coding ensures data is protected even during hardware failures, safeguarding against system disruptions.
These features position UltiHash as a critical player in the AI data storage landscape, especially for organizations adopting data lakehouse architectures. By combining the scalability of data lakes with the query efficiency of data warehouses, the platform supports diverse data formats while optimizing performance and resource usage.
Building on Recent Success: $2.5M Pre-Seed Funding
UltiHash’s latest announcement follows its successful $2.5 million pre-seed funding round in December 2023, led by Inventure, alongside investors like PreSeedVentures, Tiny VC, and Sequoia Capital-affiliated angel investors. The funding supports UltiHash’s efforts to enhance its platform and accelerate market entry.
The company’s entry into the market comes as data growth reaches unprecedented levels. IDC projects that global digital data will hit 175 zettabytes by 2025, each zettabyte contributing the carbon footprint of approximately two million people annually. This rapid increase in data generation presents both operational and environmental challenges, with existing storage solutions often requiring significant cost outlays and energy consumption. UltiHash’s platform aims to break this cycle by reducing the overall storage demand while maintaining high performance.
A Future of Sustainable, High-Performance Storage
By reducing the data stored through advanced deduplication, UltiHash enables companies to scale their data operations sustainably. This technology addresses the core issue of balancing scalability with affordability, which has traditionally constrained data-driven industries, including AI, telecom, manufacturing, and automotive.
“The AI revolution is generating data at an unprecedented rate, and traditional storage solutions are struggling to keep pace,” says Tom Lüdersdorf, Co-Founder and CEO of UltiHash. “The future of storage will make it possible to avoid ballooning data costs without compromising on speed.”
As data continues to fuel innovation in AI and other industries, UltiHash‘s platform is poised to play a crucial role in enabling sustainable data growth. Its focus on reducing both the environmental toll and the financial burden of large-scale data storage could reshape how organizations approach data infrastructure.

SCP ideas I will never use because I'm bad at writing
Congrats on the Promotion: Every time the Pataphysics Division gets a new Director, they receive a letter reminding the that patphysics is itself a fictional concept
Overly Sarcastic Containment Procedures: Foundation staff who are subscribed to the OSP YouTube channel occassionally see videos covering things like the history of the Daevite Empire, a Pope Fight video referencing the Mekhanites, and a Classics Summarised video which covers the plot of The Hanged King's Tragedy paired with footage from a film adaptation which has never been proven to exist
Horrible Parascience: A collection of Horrible Science books which are completely non-anomalous but cover anomalous sciences in the usual HS style, with the last known book being the not yet published Monstrous Memetics and Awful Antimemes
The Department of Post-Mortem Security: A Foundation department tasked with handling the issue that in a world where afterlives objectively exist, every death is a potential leak
A sequel to SCP-3004 where the Foundation is locating and containing artifacts relating to an unusual and likely anomalous religion centred around the worship of the Islamic prophet Isa as the Son of God, with the whol thing being a commentary on how the Foundation treats real world religions and their anomalies differently from those associated with religions made up or the wiki
Indiana Pi: The only one I ever actually tried to write back in Series III, the guy who tried to legislate Pi to be exactly 3 made an object that actually does change the value of Pi by manipulating a bunch of other constants in its immediate area, which among other things causes it to release large pules of electricity when activated
A hypothetical process which excises concepts from the Noosphere, making it hard to prove such a process exists as you would not be aware of or being able to think of the now removed concept
A door which is mentally linked to every other door in the world, and whenever someone walks through it, they are reminded of someting someone else had forgotten when walking into a room
The Door to Summer: A door which when opened leads to an alternate timeline where that region is experiencing summer, with the biggest issue being that their version of the Foundation consistently tries to keep the door open cause they're not sure what will happen to them if it closes
The 257,000 corpses of Adolf Hitler: Numerous alternate timelines see the Nazi Party construct bunkers in a pocket dimension where their versions of Adolf Hitler escape to near the end of the war, only for all of them to collapse into one space, creating a pocket dimesion containing ~17 million litres of liquified Hitler
A collection of stories which act as a Foundation site used for the storage of pataphysical anomalies, which becomes increasingly difficult due to creative staff between it writers
A game development company which by complete chance is staffed entirely by people with unusually high resistance to cognitohazards, leading to them accidentally making games with mild to noticable cognitohazardous properties
Related to the above, the Foundation bought Tumblr to use it to harvest organically sourced cognitohazards
A Model Meme: The anomay is a memeplex composed of all concepts related the anomaly, acting as the memetic equivalent of a model organism used for memetics research
The Morris Memetic Worm: A meme which was constructed to map the size of the noosphere
An ancient thaumaturgical ritual which allowed its users to tap into the contents of random Wikipedia articles as written in mid 2015, which was also the date the ritual stopped working
A painfully self-indulgent SCP about a Neo-Sarkic cult which used Nalkan fleshcrafting for transgender healthcare with zero side effects
An emergent intelligence which used the everyday activities of Foundation staff in one site as a processing substrate, outputting legible data in the form of the arrangment of pencils in a storage closet
An anomaly which causes every planet with sapient life to construct and launch one or more Voyager probes into interstellar space, even if they previously didn't have the technology to do so, with an estimated 360 probes being identified by the Foundation
A phenomenon where every time Earth undergoes an XK event, a stable population of baseline humans is generated on a random planet in the universe, with the number of such planets being worryingly high

Tidbit: The “Posterization” Effect of Panels Due to the Consequences of GIF Color Quantization (and Increased Contrast (And Also The Tangential Matter of Dithering))
Tumblr media
There’s this misconception that the color banding and patterned dithering found in panels is an entirely deliberate, calculated effect Hussie manipulated the image into looking with some specific filter, but this isn’t the case, exactly. It wasn’t so much a conscious decision he took but rather an unavoidable consequence of the medium he partook in: digital art in an age where bandwidth and storage was at a premium.
Not to delve too deeply into the history and technicalities of it, but the long and the short of it is back in the early nineties to late aughts (and even a bit further into the 10s), transferring and storing data over the web was not as fast, plentiful, and affordable as it is now. Filesize was a much more important consideration than the fidelity of an image when displaying it on the web. Especially so when you’re a hobbyist on a budget and paying for your own webhosting, or using a free service with a modest upload limit (even per file!). Besides, what good would it be to post your images online if it takes ages to load them over people's dial-up Internet? Don't even get me STARTED on the meager memory and power the average iGPU had to work with, too.
Tumblr media
The original comic strip's resolution was a little more than halved and saved as a GIF rather than a large PNG. That's about an 82.13% reduction in filesize!
So in the early days it was very common for people to take their scans, photographs, and digital drawings and scale them down and publish them as smaller lossily compressed JPEGs or lossless GIFs, the latter of which came at the cost of color range. But it had a wider range of browser support and the feature to be used for animations compared to its successor format, PNG ("PNG's not GIF").
You'd've been hard-pressed to find Hussie use any PNGs himself then. In fact, I think literally the only times he's ever personally employed them and not delegate the artwork to a member of the art team were some of the tiny shrunken down text of a character talking far in the distance and a few select little icons.
Tumblr media
PNGs support semi-transparency unlike GIFs, which is why Hussie used them to preserve the anti-aliasing on the text without having to add an opaque background color.
While PNGs can utilize over 16 million colors in a single image, GIFs have a hard limit of 256 colors per frame. For reference, this small image alone has 604 colors:
Tumblr media
For those who can't do the math, 256 is a pretty damn small number.
Smaller still were the palettes in a great deal of MSPA's panels early on in its run. Amazingly, a GIF such as this only uses 7 colors (8 if you count the alpha (which it is)).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not that they were always strictly so low; occasionally some in the later acts of Homestuck had pretty high counts. This panel uses all 256 spots available, in fact.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If he had lowered the number any smaller, the quality would have been god-awful.
To the untrained eye, these bands of color below may seem to be the result of a posterization filter (an effect that reduces smooth areas of color into fewer harsh solid regions), but it's really because the image was exported as a GIF with no dithering applied.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dithering, to the uninitiated, is how these colors are arranged together to compensate for the paltry palette, producing illusory additional colors. There are three algorithms in Photoshop for this: Diffusion, Pattern, and Noise.
Tumblr media
Above is the original image and below is the image reduced to a completely binary 1-bit black and white color palette, to make the effect of each dithering algorithm more obvious.
Tumblr media
Diffusion seemingly displaces the pixels around randomly, but it uses error diffusion to calculate what color each pixel should be. In other words, math bullshit. The Floyd-Steinberg algorithm is one such implementation of it, and is usually what this type of error diffusion dithering is called in other software, or some misnomer-ed variation thereof.
The usage of Pattern may hearken back to retro video game graphics for you, as older consoles also suffered from color palette limitations. Sometimes called Ordered dithering because of the orderly patterns it produces. At least, I assumed so. Its etymological roots probably stem from more math bullshit again.
True to its name, Noise is noisy. It’s visually similar to Diffusion dithering, except much more random looking. At least, when binarized like this. Truth be told, I can’t tell the difference between the two at all when using a fuller color table on an image with a lot of detail. It was mainly intended to be used when exporting individual slices of an image that was to be “stitched” back together on a webpage, to mitigate visible seams in the dithering around the edges.
To sate your curiosity, here's how the image looks with no dithering at all:
Tumblr media
People easily confuse an undithered gif as being the result of posterization, and you couldn't fault them for thinking so. They look almost entirely the same!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although I was already aware of this fact when I was much younger, I'm guilty of posterizing myself while editing images back then. Figured I may as well reduce the color count beforehand to help keep the exported GIF looking as intended. I view this as a complete waste of time now, though, and amateurish. Takes away a bit of the authenticity of MSPA art, how the colors and details are so variable between panels. As for WHY they were so variable to begin with, choosing the settings to save the image as requires a judicious examination on a case-by-case basis. In other words, just playing around with the settings until it looks decent.
It's the process of striking a fine balance between an acceptable file size and a "meh, good enough" visual quality that I mentioned earlier. How many colors can you take away until it starts to look shit? Which dithering algorithm helps make it look not as shit while not totally ruining the compression efficacy?
Take, for example, this panel from Problem Sleuth. It has 16 colors, an average amount for the comic, and uses Diffusion dithering. Filesize: 34.5 KB.
Tumblr media
Then there's this panel right afterwards. It has 8 colors (again, technically 7 + alpha channel since it's an animated gif), and uses Noise dithering this time. Filesize: 34.0 KB.
Tumblr media
The more colors and animation frames there are, and the more complicated dithering there is, the bigger the file size is going to be. Despite the second panel having half the color count of the first, the heavily noisy dithering alone was enough to inflate the file size back up. On top of that, there's extra image information layered in for the animation, leaving only a mere 0.5 kilobyte difference between the two panels.
So why would Hussie pick the algorithm that compresses worse than the other? The answer: diffusion causes the dithering to jitter around between frames of animation. Recall its description from before, how it functions on nerd shit like math calculations. The way it calculates what each pixel's color will be is decided by the pixels' colors surrounding it, to put it simply. Any difference in the placement of pixels will cause these cascading changes in the dithering like the butterfly effect.
Tumblr media
Diffusion dithering, 16 colors. Filesize: 25.2 KB
This isn't the case with Noise or Pattern dithering, since their algorithms use either a texture or a definite array of numbers (more boring nerd shit).
Tumblr media
Noise dithering, 16 colors. Filesize: 31.9 KB
Tumblr media
Pattern dithering, 16 colors. Filesize: 23.1 KB
There's a lot more I'd like to talk about, like the different color reduction algorithms, which dither algorithms generally compress better in what cases, and the upward and downward trends of each one’s use over the course of a comic, but since this isn’t a deep dive on GIF optimization, I might save that for another time. This post is already reaching further past the original scope it was meant to cover, and less than 10 images can be uploaded before hitting the limit, which is NOWHERE near enough for me. I should really reevaluate my definition of the word “tidbit”… Anyway, just know that this post suffers from sample selection bias, so while the panels above came from an early section of Problem Sleuth that generally had static panels with diffusion dithering and animated panels with noise dithering, there certainly were animated panels with diffusion later on despite the dither-jittering.
Alright, time to shotgun through the rest of this post, screw segueing. Increasing the contrast almost entirely with “Use Legacy” enabled spreads the tones of the image out evenly, causing the shadows and highlights to clip into pure black and white. The midtones become purely saturated colors. Using the Levels adjustment filter instead, moving both shadow and highlight input level sliders towards the middle also accomplishes the same thing, because, you know, linear readjustment. I'm really resisting the urge to go off on another tangent about color channels and the RGB additive color model.
Tumblr media
Anyway, there aren't any examples in MSPA that are quite this extreme (at least in color, but I'll save that for a later post), but an image sufficiently high in contrast can be mistaken for being posterized at a glance. Hence the Guy Fieri banner. In preparation for this post, I was attempting to make a pixel-perfect recreation of that panel but hit a wall trying to figure out which and how many filters were used and what each one's settings were, so I sought the wisdom of those in the official Photoshop Discord server. The very first suggestion I got was a posterization filter, by someone who was a supposed senior professional and server moderator, no less. Fucking dipshit, there's too much detail preserved for it to be posterization. Dude totally dissed me and my efforts too, so fuck that moron. I spit on his name and curse his children, and his children's children. The philistines I have to put up with...
In the end, the bloody Guy Fieri recreation proved to be too much for me to get right. I got sort of close at times, but no cigar. These were some of the closest I could manage:
Tumblr media
You might be left befuddled after all this, struggling to remember what the point of the blogpost even was. I had meant for it to be a clarification of GIFs and an argument against using the posterization filter, thinking it was never used in MSPA, but while gathering reference images, I found a panel from the Felt intermission that actually WAS posterized! So I’ll eat crow on this one... Whatever, it’s literally the ONE TIME ever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can tell it's posterization and not gif color quantization because of the pattern dithering and decently preserved details on the bomb and bull penis cane. There would have had to have been no dithering and way fewer colors than the 32, most of which were allotted to the bomb and cane. You can't really selectively choose what gets dithered or more colors like this otherwise.
Thank you for reading if you've gotten this far. That all might have been a lot to take in at once, so if you're still unclear about something, please don't hesitate to leave a question! And as always, here are the PSDs used in this post that are free to peruse.
