instead of just cross eyes and star eyes distinguishing dynasties in khaenri'ah, why do some khaenri'ahns cover one eye specifically? there’s many things that seem interconnected regarding the lore:
crimson moon turning around to look like an eye; irmin the one-eyed king; the unknown god’s cubes containing eyes in their design (same ones present in the cataclysm as well as the crimson moon), her glitching looking like arlecchino’s, and the four pointed star pattern that appeared when she showed up to the twins; forbidden knowledge and nibelung’s influence; fischl's auge der verurteilung aka eye of condemnation (crimson eye) and her skin's description "o holiest of sovereigns, high princess of immernachtreich (kingdom of evernight)!".
kaeya's note about the alberich saying "i saved this one memento from the fire 'father' made while he wasn’t paying attention. this was in violation of our principles. our clan's affairs should never be recorded" and "though we could not restore khaenri'ah to life, we of the alberich clan should lead lives as those who blaze like fire, rather than those who wallow in the embers [small piece of burning or glowing coal or wood in a dying fire]", father being in quotation marks and references to fire and ashes; the orphanage in khaenri'ah that wanted to house children from destroyed worlds and non-threats that leaked into the kingdom, in hopes of finding beings from beyond the sky who could transcend the gods; perinheri's first memory being transversing something like a chimney, filled with ash and being asked if he wasn't dead just for him to see the eye (crimson moon) and being told he was reborn; dust and the blood of of dragons (or dragon-like beings like durin and elynas) being connected to rhinedottir and the art of khemia; fire as rebirth and life but also, the balemoon blood specifically being connected to loss of memories and loss of memory being equivalent to death (not physical); despite the orphanage never being able to find that transcendal person, it had many unusual individuals who became knights of the kingdom.
irmin as the first divine halberd (that once pierced the axis mundi [cosmic/world axis, world pillar, center of the world, world tree, etc.] and connected the nine worlds), the prinzessin der verurteilungas (fischl) as the last one; fischl and kaeya comparing themselves to one another and their parallels to irmin and odin; der ring des nibelungen, in which the dwarf (or nibelung) alberich creates a ring capable of controlling the world, using gold he stole from the rhinemaidens (or rheintöchter "rhine-daughters"). the conflict that arises over the ownership of this ring eventually leads to the destruction of the gods and their home, valhalla.
irminsul (irmin + sul) meaning great pillar and being a reference to the yggdrasil, the tree that supports the universe; the description of the item silver twig – collected in the center of the world - talking about a sage that hanged himself upside down in the irminsul tree to gain knowledge of the runes and the cosmos, then going into a secret kingdom down its roots [also a reference to hanged man in tarot that symbolizes wisdom, divination, sacrifice, prophecy, etc.]; odin who hung himself upside down from the sacred world tree, yggdrasil, for nine days and nights sacrificing his eye and throwing himself on his spear (gungir) as a ritual sacrifice in order to obtain secret wisdom; memories, fire and crimson moon hand in hand with the irminsul, king irmin and the concept of fate; the fake sky, the stars and being able to see fate but also fate being a means of the heavenly principles to control the world (neuvillette calling it puppet strings); khaenri'ah, a supposed godless nation but the crimson moon dynasty revering the moon (and hilichurls worshiping istaroth); the crimson moon having an eye on humanity and always being present associated with punishment and destruction (fall of gurabad, remuria and the catclysm).
crimson moon's semblance (arlecchino’s weapon) implying the crimson moon sought vengeance (“few survived the utter destruction of their kind, hiding in the shadows where the sun did not shine, longing for the crimson moon to decree their desire for vengeance be repaid”); the design of the weapon and arlecchino’s boss attacks resembling the double helix present in deathly statuette material dropped by abyss heralds, abyss lectors and shadowy husks, which has a single red eye. it apparently whispers "see, my child. all that lies under the throne of heaven shall be destroyed by upheaval. the eternal peace of the pitch-dark void shall embrace us all.” as you gaze at it.
the abyss order being founded by chlothar alberich and pierro being the first harbinger; the "sinner" – the crystal in chains from the chasm, protected by an abyss herald - not being a god but still worshipped by the abyss order. the voice stating to chlothar and the traveler’s twin that he "[knows their] fate well" and urged them to become a "transcendent one" saying he would "shed a tear at the end of time... as i gaze back upon your life". he also imbued chlothar with the power of the abyss, which alleviated his worsening conditions. the “sinner” refered to chlothar as “dear creature”; dainsleif, pierro and kaeya being examples of khaenriahns who hide their right eye; dainsleif being called “bough keeper”, bough is a branch of a tree, but also his constellation being a snake ring like ouroboros – representing the eternal renewal cycle of life, death and rebirth; the loom of fate being an operation of the abyss order first encountered during "a herald without adherents" quest.
“the threads of your fate lie in my hands” a quote by fischl connecting to the weaves of fate; fischl stating that if she does not obtain the divine halberd “...this world and everything in it is going to burn in hellfire” (legend of the shattered halberd vol. ii). some other excerpts of the book also include: “but unbeknownst to him, this was the greatest cursed sword of all, that had once burned the entire world to cinders: laevatain [in norse mythology, a weapon crafted by loki and the only capable of defeating the cockerel viðofnir, inhabiting the top of yggdrasil], the sword had extinguished after the world was burned, but... it burned bright once more. ‘the whole world... destroyed again...’ weiyang [fischl] fell unconscious as she spoke” (vol. iv), and, "the world is beyond repair. it shall be born anew from the ashes of the last” (vol. vi); dainsleif saying “none will escape the flames. see for yourself” but also neuvillette’s character story including “the puppet strings glossed as "divine rules" would one day be burned away by the fires of judgment” when talking about constellations; burning away the old world, project stuzha by the fatui and the image of dottore burning the irminsul; nahida saying fontaine's prophecy was engraved in the irminsul, implying the tree also contains the history of the future; sibylla, a prophetess who guarded the irminsul in an ancient city located in what later became the high seas (referred to as abyssal depths). she sacrificed her life for the sake of creating phobos, remus' grand symphony, but her lack of a will ultimately caused the project to fail, as her vague desire to "grant happiness to all in the world who are called humans" caused phobos to attempt to satisfy everyone's desires — including destructive and selfish ones — and set remuria towards the course of its self-destruction (possibly tying concepts of will and fate together); thinking of dottore's plan, it would make sense to burn the tree that holds memories with a fire able to erase them (arlecchino's balemoon powers) so that the world can be born anew breaking away from the shackles of fate.
there’s also the improvisation kaeya does during the play in his hangouts. "do you believe in fate? if fate decreed your life was to end in tragedy, what would you do?". he then throws a prop and we interact, choosing if we would face our fate bravely or challenge it and rise above it. kaeya then goes on saying "then so must it be! yes, so must it be! i shall discard this intaglio and rid myself of the shackles of fate", "fate means to send the machinations of war to every corner of the land to fan the flames of conflict till they ungulf the entire world… fate would see my sword tainted with the blood of innocents, that the bright banner of my homeland might fly in every nation known to mankind. but i shall not bow to the will of fate i am no pawn in heaven’s plan. i, qubad, will spend the rest of my days in a foreign land, 'till i breathe my last in a place far from home" and finishes the play with "but i must walk this path, or freedom dies by my hand. goodbye, my tribe and kin. farewell, sweet land of my birth". the prop we get from kaeya, the intaglio, symbolizes the noble origins of prince qubad in the play and the blood-red jewel (blood, red... funny, uh?) is said to be a crystallization of the question kaeya asked us about destiny. furthermore, an intaglio can be a type of engraved gem or metal signet ring.
#random post with thoughts and connections because my brain is all over the place and my brains is about to explode gsdfasjg#but yeah idk something about fischl's eye of condemation an eye that can see all threads of fate and all truth. considering the parallels i#don't think it's crazy that it could be the reason they all hide their right eye. the red eye in the statuette dropped by abyss heralds is#also the right one. also the alberich's not being noble family... idk. this game loves implying kaeya is a prince lol but i'm also keen on#the art of khemia the orphanage and the whole thing with rebirth!!! i forgot to talk about alchemy maybe another day.#guess it kind of depends what being noble blooded also means because arlecchino's noble blood gives her some pretty unique powers#(also forgot to say arlecchino's afterimages are like sinshades in enkanomiya which are ley line anomalies!!! remnants thoughts leaving#shades of the past. nether realms. it could also connect to istaroth but anyways irminsul again!!!)#the ring of nibelung also seems important and kaeya's prop from the hangouts despite not being a ring directly can very much symbolise one#there's also the khaneri'ah ruin machines power source!!! i forgot but whatever this goes deeeeeep#i'm tired so i'll end here with the yapping bye#genshin thoughts#< just to save it somewhere because i will forget points i want to research better some other time

Of course they start announcing cast members the day I was gonna start my Secret Wars/Doomsday speculation waffle. I mean it's not really speculation so much as blabbling about possible avenues they can take from the comics but I wanted to blah anyway XD
I'm super stoked my boy is confirmed in it and I'm curious whether he'll only be in it as the God of Stories as there is so much potential with the incursions and with the comics stuff. The MCU does not fully follow the comics but I am VERY much eyeballing the fact we're meant to get Mighty Thor back and there's the mythical thing (and arguably comics thing considering King Loki's arrival in Final Days when the universe ends in the comics) where they could absolutely have Loki bust out of Valhalla with Jane (and hopefully Heimdall) to come join the battle for the end of everything.
I'm obviously very emotional and much concern that, well, pretty much everyone is going to die because that's kind of how the story goes. Sort of. It's complicated. I mean, there's the whole Doom's Battleworld thing where they can do anything they want, and eventually the universe gets reset. MCU-wise that leaves the door open for them to completely recast everyone and start again and play with new stories with new faces for old favourites. Some of the current ones can easily get kept. The universe just got rebooted so anything goes.
But yes, I'm excited to see if they decide to bring original Loki back in, too, so he can have a 'sun will shine' moment with Thor though granted that might mean they die together. God of Stories is supposed to use magic to protect all of the Asgardians plus possibly his TVA buddies and bring them forward in time to the next universe. Alternatively they might just go free-for-all and have a bunch of wacky random Lokis come in or have Richard E Grant be an evil King Loki for the lols.
Things will already be so different as I don't imagine they're going to do the whole Axis thing. Tony's gone, so's Steve. They can only really do Superior Iron Man as a variant.
I presume Strange is gonna be toast because Doom murdered him in Secret Wars in the comics (after Strange arguably betrayed everyone for the greater good and he finally realised what a tool he'd been working for - if my memory serves, I need to crack that comic back out again).
I think with the amount of cast members it's probably going to be an utter mess but you know what I'm still excited. I'm also really hype that they're bringing a fave from Deadpool & Wolverine that they just announced as the latest chair :D
Anyway yes, mega excited and hoping that Brave New World has given the franchise a whole new boot up the bum because that film really did feel like we were kicking off the new saga. I've enjoyed some things since Endgame but they've not felt truly like they're trying to build up to things except for the odd tidbit that felt like a bunch of 'maybes'.
Oh oh not to mention I'm hoping they do Young Avengers considering how many of them they've been busting out and having them suggest they'll team up. I know that sounds obvious but they've not announced anything yet, which of course has me like oooh do we get Kid Loki again orrrr are they going to save all that for the universe reset and do it out of sync from the comic order. Young Avengers happened before the Secret Wars stuff since Agent of Asgard Loki became God of Stories.
Yes, yes, babble, this was not meant to be a coherent post, just me squawking at you all. Speaking of squawking, eeee another exciting name just been announced!

Title: The Convergence of Aeons A Mythopoeic Saga
Prologue: The Fractured Realms
The Tree Yggdrasil shudders. Stars blink out. From Valhalla’s mead halls to Golgotha’s shadow, a dissonance hums—a rift in the Axis Mundi. Odin, the Allfather, strides the Bifrost, his ravens screaming warnings. Below, Earth reels: wars blaze, forests wither, and hearts grow heavy with “the slo knot swamp of reality.” The gods of old—Christ, Horus, Metatron—gather in a twilight council, their forms flickering between lion, lamb, and light.
“They’ve forgotten,” growls Thor, Mjölnir crackling. “They strangle their own dreams,” sighs Krishna, flute silent. “A reckoning,” intones Jehovah, scrolls of law aflame.
Yet Odin’s lone eye pierces deeper. “Not punishment. A test. One last gauntlet for the Children of Heaven.”
Act I: The Prophet’s Ink
In a cluttered Brooklyn apartment, Jeremy James Hammers (JJH), a disheveled scribe, jolts awake. His walls are plastered with runes, crosses, and equations. A vision burns: Shekinah, the Divine Presence, as a fractal storm. “Write,” booms a voice—both Wotan’s rumble and Christ’s whisper. “The Correct Bible. Not to condemn, but to mend.”
JJH’s pen bleeds silver. Pages fill with Genesis rewritten:
“And the Logos became flesh, and flesh became prism—shattering into Avatars: Hermes’ wit, Buddha’s peace, Simba’s roar.”
“Beware the Thieves of Credit, who hoard light as Mammon. Their chains are forged from unyielding pride.”
Outside, eight hooves clatter. Sleipnir, Odin’s steed, waits. A raven drops a tooth-shaped key (🔑🦷). “To unravel knots, you must first bite truth,” it croaks.
Act II: The Council of Whispers
Odin descends to Central Park, cloaked as a vagabond. Lila, now a professor, lectures on mythic resonance. “Mankind’s hubris eclipses the stars,” she murmurs, clutching Algiz.
“Yet stars endure,” Odin interrupts, staff glowing. “Come.”
They vanish into a liminal subway—a train where gods ride. Christ shares wine with Dionysus; Metatron debates Laozi. The agenda: The Mandate of Repair.
“You’ve neglected the Garden,” roars Horus, falcon-eyed. “Plagues, poisoned seas—your stewardship is slopbarbs!”
“But sparks remain,” argues Quetzalcoatl, feathered. “The child who counts Sleipnir’s legs. The poet who hymns in shadows.”
Odin nods. “We tip the scales—not with lightning, but with riddles. Let them choose wisdom.”
Act III: The Gauntlet of Humility
The gods weave trials:
The Mountain of I: A peak where climbers shed vanity. Narcissists falter, mirrors shattering to reveal their hollow cores.
The Well of Thirst: Christ offers crystalline water, but only to those who kneel. Tyrants drink sand.
The Bridge of Means: A chasm spanned by thread. Crossable only by those who’ve mended frayed bonds.
JJH’s Correct Bible materializes, pages fluttering globally. A teen in Jakarta reads, plants a sapling. A CEO burns her ledgers. Lila teaches students to “listen to crows.”
Epilogue: Dawn’s Tapestry
Odin stands atop Everest, Gungnir raised. The rift heals, stitching realms with auroras. Sleipnir’s hooves churn clouds into fertile rain.
“You’ll watch longer?” asks Huginn. “Always,” Odin smiles. “But now, they watch too.”
Below, humanity—flawed, trembling—builds altars from recycled plastic, sings hymns in a thousand tongues, and dares to “Till my Garden.”
Christ whispers to JJH: “Pride is the fall. Service, the rising.”
The sun dawns—not seized, but earned.
Symbolic Codex:
🦷🔑: Truth’s bite unlocks destiny.
🌍🪴: Growth demands sacred labor.
🌈🌨️: Storms birth rainbows; trials, grace.
Final Line: “Child of Heaven, you need not be perfect—only present. Now. Begin.”
Tone: Mythic yet grounded, blending apocalyptic urgency with quiet hope. A tapestry where divine archetypes mentor without dominion, and humanity’s flaws are seeds, not sins.

Chapter 36, Part A: A Sacred Guardian
I come as a blade
A sacred guardian
So you keep me sharp and test my worth in blood
“Chokehold” ~ Sleep Token
The night air was thick with tension, heavy and restless, as Hikari and Chifuyu climbed the stone steps to the shrine. A low wind whispered through the trees, carrying with it the faint scent of incense from somewhere far off. Everything felt strange, as though the world was slightly askew.
Keisuke told them to go ahead, his usual smirk in place, that cocky, self-assured smile that never faltered. "I’ll catch up. I have something to take care of," he’d said, giving no hint of anything to be concerned about. But now, as they neared the shrine, that growing sense of unease gnawed at the edges of Hikari’s mind, like a melody she couldn’t quite place.
"You okay?" Chifuyu’s voice broke through her thoughts, soft, careful.
She nodded, though her fingertips rubbed absently around the pendant she always wore. The cool silver beneath her fingers did little to calm the flutter in her chest. "Yeah... I’m fine. It’s just..." She trailed off, shaking her head, unsure how to explain the feeling gnawing at her. Something felt wrong, out of sync, but she couldn't put her finger on it.
Chifuyu didn’t press her, though he felt it as well. Something was definitely fishy this evening.
The courtyard of the shrine stretched before them, bathed in moonlight, its stones worn smooth by centuries of footsteps. Toman was already gathering, the murmur of voices weaving through the cool night air. The usual banter and energy were absent tonight, replaced by something heavier. Something darker.
The air was thick with anticipation as the ceremony to appoint the new captain of the Third Division—Pah’s division—began. Her eyes drifted over the crowd, landing on Mikey standing at the front, the calm, unreadable leader, as always. His presence held its own kind of gravity, drawing everyone’s attention toward him, the air thickening around him like a storm gathering at sea.
She and Chifuyu took their places quietly, watching as the ceremony began. Hikari felt a pang in her chest. It didn’t feel right to fill Pah’s spot while he was in juvie. He was still the captain of the Third Division in her eyes, and he always would be, no matter where he was.
Mikey’s voice cut through the stillness with the weight of his authority. "We’re going to fight Valhalla soon. They’re even bigger than Moebius, and Toman needs to grow if we want to win.”
There was something in his tone, a finality that sent a chill down her spine. The crowd shifted, anticipation crackling in the air.
"Step forward... Third Division Captain... Kisaki Tetta."
Hikari’s stomach dropped, the name hitting her like a cold wave. Kisaki.
The air changed instantly, a sour taste rising in her throat. That name—it was poison, twisting the atmosphere, pulling the world off-kilter. She hadn’t seen Kisaki since that eerie day in her father’s record store, but the memory of it sent a shiver down her spine. The same sense of unease gripped her, but stronger and darker, as though the entire world had just tipped on its axis.
Her fingers twitched at her sides, drumming against her hips as she slowly turned towards the back of the crowd. She watched as Kisaki stepped forward, his sharp eyes glinting behind his glasses, a sly smile playing at the corners of his lips. His old Moebius cohorts followed behind him, now in Toman’s uniforms, but still carrying that lingering stench of disrespect. They shoved their way through the crowd like they owned the place, shouting and taunting the Toman guys they’d only recently fought—and lost—against.
Why the fuck are those assholes here?
The Toman guys didn't stand for it, confusion and distrust swirled in the air as they shoved and shouted right back at their former enemies and rivals.
“Everybody, shut the hell up!” Draken’s voice plowed through the noise and nonsense like a bulldozer, silencing the restlessness. “This is Mikey’s decision. If you don’t like it, get your ass up here and tell him yourself,” he thundered.
No one dared. The silence that followed was thick and suffocating, like the world had folded in on itself.
“Kisaki has apologized and brought his Moebius guys along with him,” Mitsuya added, but his voice couldn’t shake the unease that clung to the air. "We need to get stronger. And bigger. This is perfectly reasonable.”
As Kisaki bowed, offering a sickening display of false humility, Hikari’s stomach twisted. She could feel the wrongness radiating from him like an invisible fog, suffocating everything in its path. This isn’t right. None of this is right.
Her breath quickened, panic rising in her chest. Before she could process it, before she could think, a blur of movement shot through the crowd.
Takemichi.
He moved faster than her mind could catch up, his fist connecting with Kisaki’s jaw with a sickening crack. The sound of the punch echoed through the night, rippling out like a shockwave, and the world seemed to stop, suspended in the silence that followed.
Then, all hell broke loose.
Shouts, curses, the clamor of bodies shifting, pushing forward. Chaos unfurled in an instant, the tension that had been brewing finally snapped, sending everything spiraling. Hikari stood frozen, her mind reeling, watching as Kisaki stumbled back, his hand flying to his face, shock flashing in his eyes. But it was only for a second. The calm, calculated mask slid back into place almost immediately.
Before she could even catch her breath, another voice sliced through the madness.
“Well, well… looks like the party’s already started without me.”
Her heart stopped.
She turned, the world slowing to a crawl as Keisuke's voice reached her ears. He strolled forward, his hair catching the wind, that same reckless grin painted across his face. But there was something off about him. Something darker.
Her breath caught in her throat. "Keisuke…”
He moved with purpose, cutting through the crowd like a blade. Toman parted for him instinctively, clearing a path.
“Who the hell are you? I’ve never seen you before,” Baji eyed one of the Moebius guys as if he were an insect.
One of Kisaki’s men, oblivious to who he was dealing with, stepped up to him, shoulders squared. “Who the hell are you?”
Baji didn’t miss a beat. His fist flew, sending the guy crumpling to the ground before he could even blink. "Who do you think you’re talking to?”
He didn’t stop. He tore through them, one after another, until Chifuyu grabbed his arm, desperation in his eyes.
“Baji-san, wait! They’re in Toman, in the Third Division now,” Chifuyu explained.
Baji’s expression soured. “What? I don’t know anything about this shit,” he bellowed. “Third Division? No way would Pah want these douchebags in his crew.”
Mikey, calm as the center of a hurricane, watched as he sat on the steps, his arm casually resting on his knee. "Baji," he called, his voice low, controlled. But there was something simmering beneath it.
“Watch yourself, Baji,” Draken also warned, stepping towards him.
“Or what? You gonna stop me?” he asked defiantly, his voice carrying a wild edge, daring Mikey to intervene. And then, without warning, he turned on Takemichi, his fist flew in a blur of violence.
Hikari’s heart thundered in her chest. This isn’t right. This isn’t him.
He landed another punch to Takemichi's face and would have kept going if not for Mitsuya grabbing hold of his arm.
“Let go, Mitsuya,” Baji growled, coiled like a spring about to snap.
Hikari moved before she realized it, her feet carrying her across the courtyard to him. She reached out, her hand resting gently on his shoulder. Her voice, when it came, was soft and only for him, barely audible over the chaos around them. "Keisuke, stop. You’ve made your point."
For a heartbeat, he stilled. His fist hung in the air, frozen mid-swing. Her touch was an anchor, pulling him back from the edge. Slowly, he lowered his arm, his eyes dark and unreadable. He knew she was right. She always was. But why did she have to be right right now?
“You’re the First Division Captain, right?" Kisaki’s voice slithered through the air, smug and oily, his new rank emblazoned on his sleeve.
Baji turned toward him, his expression hard, unforgiving. "You’ve gotta be shitting me.” He rolled his eyes in disdain before asking Mikey, “This guy’s the Third Division Captain now?”
Mikey, still as a statue, watched them both with quiet intensity. "Baji, did you come here just to throw a tantrum?”
Baji stepped closer, defiance radiating from him like heat from blacktop in summer. “Why? Do I need your permission for that?”
A tense silence built between them and Toman seemed to hold its collective breath. Hikari's own breath was stuck in her lungs, her eyes wide with shock.
“I’m joining Valhalla,” Baji finally said. “You don’t need any more troublemakers here, do you, Mikey?”
Behind Mikey’s calm exterior, Hikari caught the tiniest flash of disbelief and hurt. It came and went faster than a blink of the eye, unseen by all except the closest of his friends.
“From this moment on, First Division Captain Baji Keisuke is an enemy of Toman,” Baji announced, turning his back to Mikey and walking away.
Hikari’s world imploded.
She stumbled back—her vision blurred and the world tilted dangerously. This wasn’t happening. This couldn’t be real. Her heart thundered in her ears, drowning out the noise of the crowd. Her legs moved on their own, carrying her closer to him, the words spilling from her lips before she could stop them.
"Keisuke, no—what are you doing? You’re not serious, are you?”
But Baji didn’t look at her. He couldn’t. If he did, he might break. He kept his gaze focused ahead and kept walking, his jaw clenched tight. “I’m serious,” he said, his voice colder than she’d ever heard it. “I’m joining Valhalla. Don’t try to stop me.”
His words cut through her like a sword. Desperate, she took another step toward him, her voice cracking. “Keisuke, please! You can’t do this!”
Baji stopped in his tracks and whipped around, his eyes blazing. His voice was sharper than it had ever been with her. “I said, don’t follow me.”
The harshness of his tone was a slap to the face, the force of his words hit her like a freight train. He’d never spoken to her like that before—never with such harsh finality.
His expression was hard as steel. “I mean it, Hikari. Don’t.”
Her legs wobbled before they gave out. She crumpled to her knees on the ground, the impact barely registering. Everything around her—the voices, the shouting, the sounds of footsteps, Keisuke's retreating figure—blurred into a distorted haze. She could see, she could hear, but none of it made sense. The world around her moved, but it left her behind in her daze.
Her mouth opened, but the words she desperately needed to say wouldn’t come. They were stuck somewhere deep inside her—the connection between her mind and her mouth had been severed. She couldn’t remember how to make her voice work.
Her shallow and erratic breaths came in short, uneven bursts that did nothing to fill her lungs. Her chest tightened painfully, every breath was a battle she couldn’t win. Her hands trembled, clutching at her pendant, then releasing it, over and over, the repetitive motion offering no comfort.
She shook her head—small, frantic movements, as if she could somehow deny what was happening and magically force it out of existence.
No. No. No…
The motion became the only thing she could do, the only action left to her, the last piece of herself she could control. Everything existed just outside of her grasp, too far away to touch or comprehend.
The world was slipping further and further away, her thoughts spiraling like water down a drain. She wanted to scream, to reach out, to run after him. All she could do was shake her head over and over, trapped in her own silence.
Keisuke left. And she couldn’t follow him. There was nothing left but the overwhelming sense of loss with his words still echoing in her mind.
I’m joining Valhalla.
First Division Captain Baji Keisuke is an enemy of Toman.
Don’t follow me.
As Chifuyu watched her collapse to her knees, his heart twisted painfully in his chest. He’d seen Hikari strong, fierce, and fearless. But this? Watching her shatter, watching her crumble in silence, was like witnessing a light being snuffed out.
He was by her side in an instant, his hand resting gently on her shoulder as he crouched down beside her. “Hikari,” he whispered, his voice low and steady. He wasn’t sure if she could hear him—she didn't respond. But he stayed close, his presence solid and unwavering.
Around her, Toman’s usual energy had gone quiet, everyone exchanging tense glances, unsure of how to respond to the emotional wreckage left in Baji’s wake.
But for Chuu and the First Division, there was no hesitation. One by one, they closed ranks around her and Chifuyu, creating a tight, silent barrier. There was no discussion, no need for anyone to direct them—they knew this was Hikari’s worst nightmare. These were boys who’d fought with her, bled beside her, who’d seen the unbreakable bond between Hikari and Baji. They shared a silent understanding that the Moebius members, standing on the periphery, would never comprehend.
To them, this was a duty more sacred than any battle, and they moved with a quiet purpose as they positioned themselves shoulder-to-shoulder around her, shielding her in a wall of loyalty.
Mikey, watching from the steps, caught the motion out of the corner of his eye. His gaze sharpened as the boys of First Division surrounded her, each of them standing as sentries, heads high and eyes unwavering. His jaw tightened. He knew Hikari meant everything to Baji, and he meant everything to her—and that if there was anyone reeling in shock more than himself, it was her. For a heartbeat, Mikey’s composure slipped, the hurt flickering through his eyes before he quickly buried it again, his face hardening to a mask of unreadable calm.
Draken’s brow creased as he watched the First Division fall into place. He noticed their postures, the way they didn’t just stand around her—they blocked, they shielded, their backs straight and expressions fierce, arms crossed over their chests. His gaze softened briefly; he could tell they were doing more than just protecting Hikari from view. They were preserving her dignity in a moment of crushing vulnerability. Draken knew that the Moebius guys, clueless and sneering in their new Toman uniforms, were all too eager to exploit any weakness they saw.
Mitsuya, standing nearby, silently nodded his approval. His usually steady gaze flicked between the faces of First Division, noting the unwavering loyalty in their eyes. They weren't just guarding Hikari—they were guarding her memory of Baji, too. His jaw clenched as he shot a glare toward the Moebius members. He knew they were outsiders who didn’t belong here, didn’t understand the family Toman truly was.
The Moebius boys shifted on the sidelines, some of them sneering as they watched First Division close ranks. One of them muttered a low, taunting comment, oblivious to what this moment meant. Before he could say more, a dark look from Chuu silenced him, a threat simmering in his gaze. The message was clear: This is our Captain’s family. You don’t get to look at her like that.
Chifuyu remained kneeling beside Hikari, his own heart a painful throb as he watched her crumble. She was too still, her eyes wide and unseeing, her body wracked with the shock she couldn’t escape. Her hand was clutched tight around her pendant, fingers trembling as she struggled to anchor herself. He lowered his voice to a soft, steady murmur, trying to reach her through the haze. “Hikari,” he whispered, his tone gentle, “we’ve got you.”
Her gaze didn’t shift, but Chifuyu held his ground, staying close. The strength of the First Division around them was a reassurance. They were all holding her in a way no one else would understand, and the weight of it filled the air.
Mikey’s eyes lingered on the circle they’d formed around Hikari, a solemn respect shadowing his gaze. Baji had always been wild and unpredictable—but that fierce, loyal core had meant everything to Hikari. Mikey closed his eyes briefly, a silent acknowledgment of the pain Baji’s choice had caused, and a recognition of First Division’s loyalty. Their resolve was as immovable as his own; he’d allowed Kisaki’s men into Toman, but the circle around Hikari would remain sacred and untouchable.
Draken, seeing the shared grief and shock etched into each First Division face, shifted closer to Mikey, a steady hand resting briefly on his friend’s shoulder. This was what Toman stood for, what they were all fighting to protect. The presence of these Moebius bastards among them felt wrong, but this loyalty—this was something that could never be touched by outsiders.
As the night wore on, First Division kept their silent vigil around Hikari and Chifuyu, unmoving until the last of the crowd dispersed from the shrine. Only then did they allow the shield to lower, each of them sharing a final, solemn nod as they left her side with a promise held in each look: We’re with you. Always.

do you have thor reading recs/guides/particular run or era to recommmend to get to know and appreciate the characters?
OOOH YES THANK YOU FOR ASKING
some thor fans and loki fans may disagree with what im gonna say here BUT. i think the run which best encapsulates why i love the character and the universe, as well as having essentially a very long guided tour through some of the most significant points of the thor sub-universe within the larger MU, is jason aaron's huge thor run from 2012 to 2019 (along with everything else happening in the thor universe at that time, covered by al ewing, kieron gillen, and marguerite bennett in a few also very good spinoffs).
this is the series where the God Butcher comes from, where Jane Foster becomes Thor, where loki is canon genderfluid in Agent of Asgard, where thor fights capitalism, and much more. it's not perfect, especially in terms of characterisation when some characters get thrown between their own miniseries and the main run, but it really encapsulates what I love about thor in his comics, and it's the run that, over the course of collecting the five huge paperback collections u can get it in, made me fall in love with this sub-section of the MU
proper reading order under the cut, plus brief explanations of crossover tie-ins and so on. it looks complicated but it's basically just cos marvel loves to re-start with a new #1 every so often to keep sales up, and because i think you should read the accompanying spinoffs. if you don't want to read the excess spinoffs (although agent of asgard is VERY good) just stick to things with 'thor' in the name.
Thor: God of Thunder (2012) #1-17
Loki: Agent of Asgard (2014) #1-5
Thor: God of Thunder (2012) #18-24
then the Original Sin event happens, the Watcher dies and a bunch of secrets are revealed...
Original Sin (2014) #5.1-5.5 (essentially a loki & thor miniseries tie-in, relevant to both series)
and THEN when Original Sin continues, Nick Fury (evil now, don't ask) whispers something into Thor's ear, and Thor drops his hammer on the moon and cannot pick it up! oh no.
Thor: God of Thunder (2012) #25
because the marvel universe never stops having big events, an event called AXIS happens immediately after, and results in a bunch of 'heroes' and 'villains' being 'inverted' - the 'villains' becomes 'heroes' and vice versa. both thor and loki are involved in this, covered in:
Loki: Agent of Asgard (2014) #6-11
and if you're wondering what happened to Angela after that Original Sin tie-in:
Angela: Asgard's Assassin #1-6
Thor (2014) #1-8 and Annual #1
THEN Secret Wars happens, basically 8 month timeskip and the multiverse is ending and another earth is about to crash into the main earth. don't worry about it.
Loki: Agent of Asgard (2014) #12-17
Secret Wars continues, the multiverse died and a new 'Battleworld' is created. basically it's a patchwork of all previous universes held together by Doctor Doom (don't worry about it). Marvel cancelled every single book and everything to turned into battleworld tie-ins:
Thors (2015) #1-4
1602 Witch Hunter Angela (2015) #1-4
... and then everything goes back to normal.
Mighty Thor (2015) #1-6
Angela: Queen of Hel (2015) #1-7
Mighty Thor (2015) #7-14
Unworthy Thor (2016) #1-5
Mighty Thor (2015) #15-22
Generations: Unworthhy Thor & Mighty Thor #1
Mighty Thor (2015) #23, #700-706 (they reverted to legacy numbering, don't worry, you didn't miss 677 issues of the series)
Mighty Thor: At the Gates of Valhalla #1
Thor (2018) #1-11
and then The War of the Realms begins, the big thor-centric crossover which ends the run. the issues of that main series and the concurrent thor series should be read in release order which looks like this:
War of the Realms #1
War of the Realms #2
Thor #12
War of the Realms #3
War of the Realms #4
Thor #13
War of the Realms #5
War of the Realms #6
Thor #14-16
and a concluding epilogue miniseries:
King Thor (2019) #1-4
#marvel#thor#lily dot tee ex tee#alternatively: the new 'immortal thor' series that's started is REALLY GOOD and al ewing really understands thor as a character#it's more of an unorthodox look at his universe (as you'd expect from the writer of Immortal Hulk)#but it's phenomenal so far (as you'd expect from the writer of Immortal Hulk)

Voiceplay Visuals: Oogie Boogie's Song
It's time, y'all.
Oogie Boogie's Song was released on the 19th of October, 2019, and it currently stands at 12.4 million views on Youtube. While that's only roughly a quarter of the views of VP's Moana Medley, it's still very impressive, and it's their second-most-popular video on their channel (since the Moana Medley at least) (it also appears to be their most popular song on Spotify, with over 8 million streams/listens.
If you weren't introduced to Voiceplay from their Moana Medley or some of the more recently popular stuff like Nothing Else Matters and Valhalla Calling, then chances are that this was the way you stumbled across them (it was probably also your first introduction to subharmonics, as was the case for many reactors who watched this video). I found the video roughly a week after its release, and posted on my Discord about it, saying "Do you wanna hear some of the lowest goddamn notes you've ever heard? Well then, watch this." It did not take long at all for me to fall in love with Geoff, lemme tell you.
But anyway, enough backstory and whatnot, time for the actual video!
I quietly wonder if the original intention was to have the die stay in his beard after it's thrown at him, and if so, how long did it take to get right?
"Sandy Claws" btw is played by "Pasquale Palazzolo", Geoff's brother-in-law I believe? (I think I heard somewhere that Eli does the voice for him though)
What an entrance honestly
Layne is Zero, who in the movie is Jack's pet ghost-dog, but here he's decided to hang out with Oogie Boogie apparently!
Right, so I'm guessing that Eli is Lock, based on the red outfit, J is Barrel (based on the skeleton shirt), leaving Earl as Shock (and he's got kinda similar blue eye-makeup). Eli and J reprise their roles in Voiceplay's cover of Kidnap The Sandy Claws the following year
Brilliant acting job by Mr Palazzolo, 10/10, no notes 👍
Cool glowy mouth/lips thing!
Did "Shock" just crack/break "Barrel's" neck? 😅
"What are you going to do?" "I'm gonna do the best I can! Hit it!"
But seriously, 10/10 costuming (also shoutout to Voiceplay for getting it right and not making Oogie Boogie's actual regular appearance be green (as he is so often depicted - it's just due to the lighting in some scenes! He's not actually green!). And I'm not sure whether it's the makeup or his acting or both, but it's almost in a way sort of hard for me to recognize Geoff here? That's not the right phrasing - obviously I know it's him, but he just feels/looks so different to how he usually does. Heck, even in the Little Mermaid Medley it feels more like him. That's not a criticism either way though! He did such a good job here, as did everyone involved in making this video!
Those were definitely not rolled naturally. If anything, they were spun on their axis into frame, very lightly 😝
I haven't said a lot about them but Eli, Earl, and J all also did a brilliant job of going full-character with their portrayals of Lock, Shock, and Barrel!
lol mood
(I swear there's no section of any song that I have internally memorised more than the last ~15 seconds of this song)
Not here to focus on the song itself, but if you were watching this for the first time and weren't quite sure where that insanely-low rumbling was coming from at the end, Geoff's body language almost definitely answers that question for you.
Seriously the way he physically seems to emit that E1 subharmonic really adds to the seemingly inhumanness of it, and I love it. What a performance!
(Also I cannot for the life of me tell whether Geoff added some stuff to his hair like hair chalk for this video to make it lighter or whether the lighting is just making it seem that way itself)
Final note: Did they have some sort of mechanism or a string or something like that to ensure Pasquale/"Sandy" didn't fall over in that chair? Because it tips backwards twice, deliberately, but not all the way either time.
So that's Oogie Boogie's Song: the tip of the freaking iceberg when it comes to the productions of "the theatre kids of acapella", and I am so glad I became a fan of Voiceplay thanks to this video.

The Axis Mundi
Beginning my dive into connections between different spiritual beliefs I began researching the Axis Mundi. A term I had learned while studying Latin American and Caribbean Art history. I began my search by looking into the origin of this idea to discover the term had been introduced by Roman scholar Mercia Eliade. As explained by Raed Gilliam, “describing it as the meeting place of “the higher and lower realms,” of “Heaven and Earth.” It comes in many shapes and sizes. Some are natural, like mountains (Mount Hermon in the Epic of Gilgamesh), trees (Yggdrasil in Norse mythology), pillars of smoke and fire (think Exodus); others manmade, like towers (Babel), stairs (Jacob’s Ladder), or crosses. You can extend this concept into the secular world: suddenly, skyscrapers, iconic landmarks, even stadiums, become the centers of a particular kind of world, cultural cores where the abstract ideal incarnates into the tangible, the visibly real. Eliade put it this way: “Every Microcosm, every inhabited region, has a Center; that is to say, a place that is sacred above all.” I quickly discovered this idea is shared amongst a wide range of cultures. Although described differently throughout the globe the idea of the axis mundi is shared within most cultures and religions. Often described as a celestial connection offering a doorway or bridge of sorts, that is used as transportation to another realm. This makes almost any idea of a process or device that provides a connection between worlds, an axis mundi.
This idea of accessing different realms of existence is extremely prominent throughout ancient Mesoamerican cultures like the Olmec, Mayan, Inca, and Aztec. The most common representation is a depiction of an upper realm, a middle realm, a lower realm. Often these depictions display a deity that acts as a sort of guid through these plains. Without these guides humans are left unable to access these realms. Deities that vary, are found throughout the codex’s of the Mesoamerican people. Both ancient cultures and the people of today are found separating themselves into their own creeds or cults. These groups may often create deities of their own. Like a unique Mesoamerican Goddess, nicknamed “the spider woman”, has only ever been found depicted within the ruins of the lost empire of Teotihuacan.
An ancient ruin that had been abandoned long before conquistadors discovered the “new world” and provided us with such information. The Axis Mundi is also referred to as Ya'axche, the sacred tree of life.
Norse Pagan, or Asatro beliefs also describe a world tree named Yggdrasil described as the axis of the known worlds. Yggdrasil is known to be an ash tree splitting through the cosmos. The roots reached into the realms of the dead while the branches spread wide connecting many realms like Asgard, Folkvang, and Jotunheim. Within the many different interpretations of the Asatro’s an axis mundi being the realm of the gods known as the Aseir. There is a notion of a middle and lower realms as well, known as Midgard, and Helheim, but several other realms can be found throughout the Norse pagan cosmos. For example Valhalla, the Paradise of the Brave. Many mythical creatures live under the branches of the great tree that allow connection between the multitude of realms. Aesir Gods like Oden, Loki, and Thor were made legendary from the stories of their adventures traveling between these realms. Only the Gods had the ability to cross the bifrost, a rainbow bridge allowing them to travel between realms.
Celtic pagans are often remembered for the symbol known as the world tree referred to as Crann Bethadh, or tree of life. A tree that intertwines between all beings, and things. With roots deep in the earth and branches reaching toward the heavens connecting our world to celestial realms and realms of man.
Ancient Greeks believed in a similar way of spiritual structure, known as Omphalos. Viewed as an access point to the voice of the gods. Places like mt. Olympus were used to connect their world with the divine.
Hindus believe in a similar idea of the axis mundi, seen as a cosmic pillar known as “Meru” that connects all realms, humans, and deities. This makes it a vocal point of meditation. “The Asvattha tree, also known as the Peepul tree or sacred fig tree, Latin name Ficus religiosa, is native to India and Southeast Asia. It is important practically and symbolically in Indian religious belief and practice today. But the importance of the Asvattha tree goes back to the most ancient recorded history of India. Indeed, the Buddha is thought to have achieved enlightenment under an Asvattha tree, and hence it is also called Bodhi [perfect wisdom] tree. There may also be a connection with the Kalpa-vṛkṣa or wish-fulfilling tree that the Bhagavata Purana uses as a metaphor for itself. The Asvattha tree, like several other tree varieties, was already mentioned symbolically in several verses of the Rig Veda, for example .” However the temples themself are seen as the significant. Temples are built upon elevated platforms or hills and built with similar symbolic architecture. This includes a shikara reaching out toward the heavens in the form of a tower or spiral, and a garbhagriha the innermost sanctuary of the mandir. The Hindu temple is created with an architectural significance purposefully working as a sort of axis mundi in the way it is designed. A tall spire within these temples known as a shikara is symbolic of mount Merus peak a heavenly like place where the gods reside
The Egyptians saw their land as the center of the world and believed in a cosmic pillar uniting the heaven and the realms controlled by a concept of order and balance referred to as Ma’at. Egyptian myth claimed that the sacred mound Benbe was the center of the world, and the place where creation began. This gave the location divine significance creating a connection between the worlds and the heavens.
In Slavic mythology the beginning of the world is connected with the emerging primordial mountain known as Triglav. Triglav is also known as a slavic deity who has three heads that connect to the heavens, the earth, and the underworld. The god was worshiped from the top of a mountain where a strong oak stood, blood was spilt and sacrifices were celebrated.
Hebrew and jewish beliefs, the navel of the world as Jerusalem. In readings like the Jubilees describe places like mount Sinai, mount Zion, and mount Hermon In addition the Garden of Eden are described as passages where things can be communicated or even emerge. Jub 8:11-30-” Noah divides the earth among his three sons by lot, following the order of Gen. 10: Shem, Ham, and Japheth”. The imago mundi is a remarkable map, also known as the Babylonian map of the world, and is the oldest known map in the world. This map depicts mount Zion as the center of the earth as well the intersecting point of the garden of eden and the straits of gibraltar. In the city of Jerusalem a temple is thought to be the center junction point between heavens and earth known as holy of holies. Located on mount Zion in Jerusalem the church of the apostles holds this location.
The idea of an upper middle and lower realm is most commonly depicted as heaven, earth, and hell in Christian faiths. Although christian faiths have many subdivisions, all christian faiths have this common denominator. Some believe in sublevels in the after life most commonly discussed in readings like Dante's inferno. Christian faith also speaks of a sacred, which is more directly referred to as the tree of life in, Genesis Book 2 Verses 8, 9, 16, 17; KJV.
Islamic faiths speak of the Kabba found in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Described as one of five pillars of the islamic faith, this holy ground is constructed around a meteorite considered sacred to Islamic culture. The Kabba is circled seven times by the islamic pilgrims to symbolize the seven astronomical spheres viewable by the naked eye. Sources also speak towards three hundred and sixty sacred objects in islamic faith which seem to be related to the solar cycle and other astronomical phenomena.

2021's Top 10 Games
2021 was the year of a new console generation for me, sort of? The PlayStation 5's visuals and haptic feedback are impressive, but outside of a few games (Astro's Playroom, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank) I spent very little time with the system. My family, myself included, spent far more time with the Xbox Series X. That had more to do with Game Pass than with any console exclusives though.
I also spent some time with Google Stadia™ and Amazon Luna™ this year, which I did not expect. I got access to UbiSoft plus, or select, or whatever (just to complete the axis of evil here) for $1 and my PC wasn't quite up to running Assassin's Creed Valhalla, but it ran fine on Luna. Google Stadia had a timed exclusivity for Young Souls, and I had a coupon. Both services ran better than I expected. AC Valhalla continued my long tradition of getting sucked into open world checklist games for abooooout a dozen hours, then losing interest.
The last game surprise of the year was League of Legends. Not the game itself so much (it's a game I respect at a great distance) but the...*sigh*....the brand...?
They made an RPG based on League of Legends characters, and it was really good. And they made an animated TV show based on League of Legends characters. And it was really good! If I can't blindly hate things, what am I doing with my life? Why am I even on the internet???
10. Bowser's Fury
Bowser's Fury felt familiar in the way that all Mario games do. It also felt fresh and unique in that it's an open world 3D Mario. It has a giant kaiju Bowser that shows up to fuck with your day pretty frequently, and Mario can become a kaiju kitty Mario to battle him. It's weird and cool as hell. I'm 100% hoping the next full Mario game (this one is pretty short) runs with the open world formula.
9. Fuga: Melodies of Steel
Not since Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime have I been able to declare "MY TANK IS FIGHT!" when playing a video game, so that was nice. Fuga is an RPG where you play as orphan furries in a story that seems to be allegory for World War II. Different orphans have different abilities in the TANK VS TANK BATTLES, and the combat sections are broken up by time spent performing tasks within your TANK like cooking and cleaning and being social. You can also load an orphan into the tank's SOUL CANNON if things get desperate. You probably shouldn't though.
Anyway, the characters are charming, the gameplay swapped back and forth at a comfortable clip, and it ended just before it wore out its welcome. And the boss fight music is just the right dose of melodrama. This year had a couple of good turn-based RPG's that clocked in at about 30 hours, which is A Good Thing to have between the Persona's and Dragon Quest's of the world.
8. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed this game. I fall somewhere between apathetic and annoyed when it comes to the omnipresent Marvel craze of the past several years. That means I came into this game with no expectations or preconceived notions of what Star Lord looks like, how Gamora should act, and so on.
The game starts off pretty slowly for the first couple of hours, but ends up fleshing out each character and made me care about every member of my team. Each character got their own backstory (except for Groot, who is Groot) and I found myself kind of a fan of Guardians of the Galaxy by the end of the game? I laughed at Rocket and felt sympathy for him and also wanted to punt him into the sun at various points, which feels right. Drax always calling Peter Quill by his full name reminded me of Colin Robinson in What We Do in the Shadows. The game's frequent chatter between team members never bothered me.
I actually gave a shit about everyone on my team. The game's combat is serviceable, and controlling Star Lord only while having your other guardians fight on their own and activate their special abilities on command feels like the right battle system for the game. In battle when your meter thing fills up, Star Lord holds up his Walkman™ and calls time out like he's Zack Morris. He gives a rousing speech to his team, then they go back to combat while Culture Club or Judas Priest or something plays. It fucking WORKS. The voice work is also terrific, and I think Mantis might be the best character of the year for me. Her take on "space cadet girl who can see all the timelines" feels appropriately overwhelmed, but never stops being a joy. Sad that the game's relatively poor sales make a sequel unlikely. 7. Resident Evil: Village
Before 2019's excellent Resident Evil 2 remake, the series has always been a miss for me. Survival horror has never been my jam, but RE2Make ReMake 2 The Resident Evil 2 Remake was my game of year in 2019. So naturally I decided to see what other games in the series I'd missed out on. The answer was kind of "none" for me. Most had aged in a not-great way, even the various remasters and rereleases were pretty cludgy compared to RE2MAKE. Resident Evil 7 is very good, but VR seems to be the best way to play that game and I'm a coward, so I didn't get very far into it. I don't like the anxious feeling that game gives me in my tum-tum.
Anyway, so Resident Evil 8 comes around and I'm sitting this one out. Then my firstborn took an interest in the game and asked if we could play through it together. I'm not gonna say no. It's the right amount of unsettling and spooky, and it's full of best kind of dumb video game shit. Eagle-shaped recess in the wall? Good thing I found an eagle-shaped pendant in the other room. Ethan lost a hand? Pour some medicine water on it. Besides, if you swap weapons fast enough you can see that he clearly has at LEAST three hands.
And it's a good thing, because that dude goes through a bloody gauntlet of horrific situations. He does get stepped on by the tall steppy vampire lady though. And he gets all his baby pieces back together, so that's nice for him. I don't know why, but the hilarious moment where least-loved sibling Moreau triumphantly screams "I'm the BEST!!!" has stuck with me all year.
I do wish the back third of the game was less of a dull shooter and had more of the personality of the earlier parts. Overall, though? I'm glad my kid made me play it. And the way the internet wanted to be choked and jerked off by the 9 foot tall vampire lady was entertaining, though Heisenberg was probably the best character in that game.
6. Ruined King: A League of Legends Story
I have zero interest in League of Legends. I do, however, like me a good old turn-based RPG. This is a very good one of those. Moreover, it's immediately recognizable as a spiritual successor to 2018's very-good-but-fatally-flawed-and-horrifically-named Battle Chasers: Nightwar.
Ruined King keeps its predecessor's turn-based combat, adding some strategic depth in the form of a timeline everyone's turns and actions are charted upon. Most abilities have 3 different modes: Balance, Speed, and Power - speed is faster and weaker, power is slower and stronger. Each character can customize their skills to grant extra effects (the group healing skill can also cleanse debuffs if used in the speed lane of the time chart for example).
Ruined King doesn't really do anything groundbreaking. Every part of the game from combat to music (Gareth Coker does a great job with the soundtrack) to writing to visuals just works. By ditching the old XP system and allowing inactive party members to gain full XP, the Battle Chasers experience of slowly painting myself into a corner has been replaced with a tight 25 hours that didn't overstay its welcome.
5. Life is Strange: True Colors
The original Life is Strange is one of my favorite game experiences ever. Despite all its flaws, it had a lot of heart and a strong core. It's impossible to untangle my love of the game from the circumstances in which I played it (as with all games, movies, music, etc.). I played it concurrently with a few friends, and we all discussed it and compared outcomes and choices.
Its follow-up, Life is Strange 2 didn't land quite the same for me, neither did spiritual partner Tell Me Why. Like these two games, I played True Colors with my wife and firstborn, passing the controller around and discussing major story choices. True Colors might be the best of all these games.
Alex Chen is an incredibly likeable protagonist. As with all Choices Matter protagonists, she finds herself dealing with some serious shit. She has the superpower of mega empathy? Which works better than it sounds like it might. She can read people and, when they are feeling strong emotions, she can take on those emotions for better or worse.
The game has a few emotional moments that hit hard without feeling cheap. True Colors doesn't quite stick the landing with the way the story wraps up (it asks us to accept what was - for me - one coincidence too many) but I don't care. Loved my time with the game, and it makes me want to move to small Colorado town and smoke marijuana cigarettes.
4. Griftlands
Klei makes its hay with the Don't Starve franchise. Their other games I've played (Mark of the Ninja, Invisible Inc, Oxygen not Included) fall squarely into the "I respect this a lot but don't enjoy playing it" category. With Griftlands, there's finally a Klei game that properly hooked me. A deckbuilding game with a focus on story and characters, the setting sets it apart from the rest.
The game's setting is off-kilter just enough that I can't easily pigeonhole it into a genre. "Dirty back alley steampunk" is my closest approximation. It's a deckbuilding card game with 3 unique characters, each with their own story. The game's conflict play out in either good old-fashioned combat, or in conversation. In the former you have punches and guns and dodges, as you'd expect. In the latter you have brags, apologies, and hunches and the such.
Each character has their own pool of cards for each encounter type. Throw in items and allies, and cards and outfits to unlock and the game has a buttload of replayability. It takes a little while to get rolling, but the time investment is super worth it.
3. NieR Replicant
NieR Replicant v1.4921467089079801 is the 2021 remake of the original NieR game from the Playstation 3 era. Instead of playing as sad androids like in 2017's NieR Automata, you play as sad people. I think, maybe. I'm not actually sure. I need to read the NieR wiki again.
Where NieR Automata famously made you play through it three times to see its full story. NieR Replicant does something similar, but the changes from one playthrough to the next feel very minor in a way that feels like the game does not respect my time. That said, I still enjoy spending time in that world. Replicant's world is melancholy and beautiful, and the soundtrack is likewise a gorgeous companion for this repeated journey. There are areas in the game that are a surprising departure from the rest of the game's third-person action gameplay. There's some text-heavy, choose-your-own-adventure stuff in the game, and a haunting, foreboding section that felt like it belongs in a Resident Evil game.
It's a game that I came back to again and again throughout the year. Like its successor/predecessor NieR Automata, it's a game that punches above its weight, an experience greater than the sum of its parts. The characters' stories are full of tragedy, but they are given life and depth. I found myself invested in Kaine, Weiss, and Emil. Like most video games it didn't quite reach the heights of NieR Automata for me, but I loved my time with Replicant just the same.
2. Rogue Lords
Every year seems to have one of These games. These run-based, unlock-new-shit, one-more-run games that I am absolutely glued to until I unlock every last goodie and overcome every challenge the game offers. The best comparison I can make is Darkest Dungeon meets Slay the Spire, with a classic horror theme layered over top of it.
You choose your party from the likes of Dracula, Bloody Mary, and Dr Frankenstein. You then travel from node to node engaging in combat, browsing shops, and hitting little one-off story scenarios in an attempt to find and kill Van Helsing. It's not a card game, but you find, improve, and swap out skills for your crew so the customization activates that same part of my brain.
Oh, and you play as the devil, which feels like a dumb throwaway explanation for why all these powerful entities will do your bidding. It ends up making a difference in what feels like the game's most unique mechanism though - you can spend your life essence (when it hits zero you lose) to "cheat." This can be used to play a card for free, alter the health of an ally or enemy, change the type of encounter on offer, and more. It feels cheap until you realize that doing this too often will leave you very, very vulnerable.
The customization, unlockable, strategic and tactical elements of the game combine for a delicious stew that I could not get enough of. It was just about all I played for a solid month.
1. Inscryption
For most of 2021, no game stood out enough to be my game of the year. I've enjoyed plenty of games this year, but none really felt special until Inscryption came along. I almost missed it after I spent 5 minutes with the demo and thought "Eh, this card game seems fine but nothing special." And, taken all on its own, the card game is perfectly fine but, as a fan of lots of card games both digital and tabletop, isn't anything special. It's a lane-based card game with a few mechanics and a very small pool of cards.
If you've heard of Inscryption, you've probably heard that the game Goes Places and little else, as it's very hard to talk about this game without spoiling what makes it so special. My understanding of what the game is on a fundamental level changed a few times during play. There are little "Huh? Uh, THAT seems weird" moments here and there that slowly pile up. "What's this? I wonder if I can...oh holy shit, YUP."
The game's aesthetic is incredibly effective. You start off in what seems to be a cabin, trapped by a sociopath who insists that you play a creepy little card game with him. It involves animals and blood sacrifice and teeth. The music is a low thrum that slowly gets under your skin and accentuates the game's sense of unease. The sound effects are likewise wet and upsetting.
The game even hit me with an unexpected emotional moment. I don't think every part of the game is perfect, but it is greater than the sum of its parts. It's a game that used up my brain's idle cycles for the couple of weeks I was playing it. It's a strong candidate for "I wish I could erase the experience from my brain and play it for the first time again." And I can't say too much apart from "Even if you don't normally like card games, you should play Inscryption."
