Penguin vs. Pirates Prototype FUNDED!
Thanks to the Canada Media Fund1 (CMF) we're pleased to announced that Penguin vs. Pirates' prototype is in FULL development.
Backstory
Back in the fall of 2021 Frozen Machine submitted an application to the CMF's Conceptualization Program2 in an attempt to get some seed money to work on the Game Design Document (GDD) for what we think will be our breakout game - Penguin vs. Pirates! This was a turning point for the studio where after almost 6 years of bootstrapping the company and every project the team was able to issue their first paychecks.
After a really fun, creative-filled, summer the next logical step was to make use of another one of CMF's incentives - the Prototyping Program3! The application for this program was more involved so we reached out to other local studios4 who have successfully gotten funding from this program before. It took a few tries but in 2024 CMF got back to us with the positive news that Penguin vs. Pirates was fully funded under the Prototyping Program.
What's next?
Now that we have room to breathe again the first milestone is to have a playable demo for Game Con Canada5 (GCC) in June, and bring it back to the Game Discovery Exhibition6 (GDX) in July. The remainder of the time after that we will be hard at work completing a full gameplay loop demo which we'll share more information about in the future.
Do you want to be part of the penguin colony? Or perhaps join the pirate crew? Sign up to our mailing list7 to get the exclusive scoop on all the future announcements for the game, or join our Discord8 to talk with fellow penguins and pirates.
More information will be shared in the future, until then watch our promo trailer9 and please remember - have fun creating!

Pics from a play about the rising violence in my hometown that I co-wrote and co-performed in for a major theatre in my province when I was 16
I'm the one holding the sign that says "esponsibility".
The play was called Are We Safe Yet? (a reference to some graffiti our sound and light tech saw one day near the theatre) and was part of a program for teens where we worked with professionals in our fields of interest to put on performances.
Instead of being one single story, the play was a bunch of wildly varied sketches talking about different aspects of violence, how it can affect a community, and how we can work to solve those issues.

^ My favourite sketch from the play: a dance-y fight sequence inspired by the fight between the Sharks and the Jets in West Side Story (complete with finger snaps!). Our amazing director even managed to snag a professional fight choreographer to volunteer to design the fight and direct us through it.

^ The whole team together! Our director was the incredibly talented Mieko Ouchi. If you're Canadian and have a chance to see something written or directed by her, take that chance!

The Armeater, a cryptid first spotted in the river valley of Edmonton, Alberta, in 2023. Artist depiction by Parash Rahman During the summer of 2023, a group of young adults claimed to see a creature crossing the Edmonton River Valley, in Alberta, Canada. The creature was described to "have the head of an anteater, with glistening scissor-like fangs at the end of its snout. Its body was humanoid, possibly female." It's also debated between the friends wether or not it had large moth wings. Some were adamant they saw wings, while others were convinced it was dragging tattered cloth. Most peculiar of all, the creature appeared to be sprinting off with an armful of limbs. This spawned the nickname "Armeater" among local Edmontonians, as a play on the anteater-like appearance. It is not confirmed wether or not the Edmonton Armeater actually consumes human arms, and the lack of Albertans claiming a sudden loss of limbs in the area has cast much doubt on the creature's existence. Regardless, the community has embraced the idea of a local cryptid, and continues to celebrate the myth with artwork, t-shirts and souvenir trinkets.
