Every time Persona 5 makes a big deal about how the Phantom Thieves are criminals and break the law I can only think "Which law? Which law are they violating? Show me the law. I want to see the law they're breaking the letter of." Show me where in the Japanese legislation it says Thou shalt not physically enter people's subconscious and extract a physical manifestation of a symbolically meaningful item to them, removing their badthink in the process.
I guess the point is that they're thieves that they're stealing stuff but also it's been explicitly confirmed that the palace owner does not lose that item in the real world. Kamoshida still had that medal in his house. What kind of a theft is that.
Are they performing unlawful lobotomies without a medical license? Show me the fucking law

Too much Old World of Darkness
Reminiscing about the 90s again, and the social culture that saw their own inner world reflected in World of Darkness and horror literature of the era.
I always think about stuff like the social scene of the day. How things changed, how they just developed in the most predictable ways. How the cynical inner worlds of 70s and 80s kids in writing came to life for the up-and-coming 90s kids and they saw the fantasy reflections of their world in the musty black and white game books of franchises that made jambalaya out of classic literature and gothic horror.
And how much of that literature is now, "too problematic" to even be allowed in the game. Or even spoken of, except to spit and demonstrate hate and disavow the badthink of mythical creatures that just "shame women," or "are totally just Eurocentric racism."
I think I might like to contribute to the real pot of gothic, horror and urban fantasy literature. And who knows, maybe some coffee swilling cynical teenager will read my works and put a bootleg interpretation in some tabletop game that takes the cream of the crop made popular by struggling authors and profits off of it- only to then preach at the audience how such a thing is bad and you're horrid for enjoying such "irresponsible literature."
Still struggling to make complete stories that have closure and a fitting end, but dang, can I make some characters.

Didn't think that we would get to a point where opposing redlining and being in favor of the Loving vs Virginia ruling and prioritizing abortion and sexual rights and being anti-censorship made you some kind of a radical who could be unemployable and unpublishable for badthink but here we are
Here we fucking are
You've effectively walked back the gains of the 60s and 70s you fucking dumb shits
I hope you are happy

Honestly so many of you fuckers on this website still refuse to understand that the question of whether this site is "good" or "bad" is more complex than you want to pretend it is, and lemme tell you its actually very reactionary to claim that this site deserves to end over even their most egregious of actions. And before you get your hackles raised, google what "reactionary" means, because no it isnt simply "evil conservative badthink" like yall pretend. Its a thing that leftists fall into as easily as conservatives, and the sooner you admit that and start checking yourself for it, you'll realize that 90% of the hatred towards this site is overblown reactionary garbage.

tangentially from my last post, one of the more surprising moments of sex/gender essentialism I've encountered of late was in a conversation with a trans woman about how starting E might affect her POTS. someone else had told her about T helping because (it's believed, we don't know for sure) it improves fluid retention and therefore blood volume. and she responded, "oh, so E would make it worse then."
the only reason to jump to that conclusion is if you have a basic assumption that E has to do the opposite of what T does. and that can only be based on, well, notions of "(the) opposite sex(es)," because if you strictly look at the physical effects of these hormones, they do two different sets of things; you could construe some of them as opposed (ease or difficulty of building muscle mass, for instance), but lots of these things are not the opposite of any of the others, like, chemically or physically. the few relevant studies I've ever found suggest that E actually does the same thing T does with respect to blood volume, though whether it does so to the same degree isn't clear. it's just that adding more of one of them is going to have this effect.
I'm not ragging on this woman for having Gender Badthink while being trans, or anything like that. hormones are fucking complicated and confusing, and also we live in a society. I just thought it was kind of an amazing example of ideology in action.

also p-ocd, z-ocd and other "i'm scared i might harm someone sexually" forms are something we only learned about VERY recently and made too much of our brain bullshit make sense. i don't doubt tumblr has genuinely driven some people to suicide over this, it's like a petri dish for this shit, so if you're afraid that your thoughts or feelings are Sexual Badthink, please look into sexual ocd
i genuinely think ocd is incredibly underdiagnosed bc i will see people posting what are obvious rituals, compulsions, intrusive thoughts, spiralling, hyper morality, etc and its like Have You Considered This Might Be An Issue

Discourse in a world without internet.
I'm actually glad that, "kids today don't know what it was like" exists when it comes to social and political discourse. Because a great deal of manufactured ignorance hinged on the idea that the vast majority of us didn't have access to information, we were gatekept out by simply not having access to people in our social networks that knew certain information, and those that did know it, had next to zero chance to meet and interact with anyone that actually knows that information.
So they would be free to declare stuff with confidence and authority on the subjects of, say, rape statistics, and TERFs would spin that into a feminist narrative about how all men are evil, vile monsters who were bad just because of their Y chromosome, as well as say that creatured a bad nurture culture of patriarchy. And unless you were a statistician with degrees, even if you did the laymans thing, did your own research, they'd disregard any dissent you had for that based purely on the fact you didn't make statistics your life's work.
So pre-internet, we were forced to live in a world where you were limited first by what you could conclude in your own head, next by what was already written down and had to conveniently be around you and thus your resources to know were limited to what was conveniently stockpiled around you (source to bias of the book buyer and creators of said books) and you were like an indigenous island bird being attacked by a foreign feral cat when it came to social or political discourse you were unprepared for.
And some of these people really capitalized on that islandization effect in order to spin yarns of bullshit. Even considering political or social discourse or trying to engage in debate with people that were programmed with conspiracy to "spread awareness" and make assertions that were so hard to determine one way or another from a critique standpoint that they needed refutation by someone in the peer group with the sense or the education, and if you didn't have that guy in your peer group, you might get strongarmed and socially pressured into conformity for this assumed truth.
The internet has changed ALL of that.
I think back to the era when Ninja Turtles and shit were all the rage and everybody was doing wuxi kung fu (tautology lol) nonsense on the playground, and once in a while you'd have a budding feminist get on her soapbox and declare doing that to be orientalist and racist towards Asian people and culture, lettng you know she wasn't going to tolerate even witnessing that without alerting the other girls you were Committing a Racism(tm) and that you were a horrible person for it. And you know what that means; get declared a badthinker, the other girls feel pressured to reject you, or face criticism and rejection themselves from the Girl Squad for enabling you or tolerating your bad behavior.
That was the kind of peer group crybullying/conscientous bullying you could get away with as a white girl among majority white populations, back in the day. What were you going to do? Side with the racists and let her delusions that she lived in a 1940s/1950s white supremacist den go unchallenged, or make an effort to disprove the dour view she had of the world was fake by disproving it?
But in the back of your mind, you knew, "If only some of the neighbor kids we play make believe with were actually Asian; they'd tell this uppity bitch that kids in Asia also do this make believe bullshit and it doesn't make us Orientalist to do this, just because we're white.." But because the populations, at the time, were largely white European, that sort of thing never happened. There was no convenient Asian Friend to pipe up and go, "Chill, it's.. fucking Ninja Turtles, sis. It's stupid kid make believe games. It's cool. It's okay. It's fine. You're not racist for playing a ninja."
Now adays? Some soapbox standing asshole SJW bitch decides to preen and strut about talking about how western society trivializes Asian culture by buying and reading Naruto, some English speaking Japanese superfan will appear out from under a forum ROCK and go, "Shut up. It's okay to enjoy manga and anime and not be Japanese. Don't speak for me. You're ridiculous."
Do you know what we would've given for that kind of backup as kids in those situations?
And this is made more complicated. Some girls that were driven and indoctrinated to behave and act like that did so genuinely because they felt everything that was said was true, with no ulterior motive, looked through rose tinted glasses and wanted to improve society. Because they thought the only reason racism and such existed was because either nobody cared to critically assess their own actions or thoughts, or they were maliciously bigoted. It wasn't a very big brain mentality and largely accepted by either gullible people, or sycophants that will believe anything if it keeps them out of social trouble.
And then there were the girls that would stick to the idea they needed to "improve society(tm)" by "Starting conversations." So they would out and out lie to you about things like that and try to convey that Asians universally despised when non-Asians played around with some things like action figures and wuxi things the way they would western army men and superheroes, and such things were thoughtless exploitation. While knowing such things weren't true, but wanting to get people underexposed to the conversations or reality to accept this false reality was true, and act accordingly.
Some of them were so deliberately disingenuous that they'd feign not understanding what they believed was untrue, even when, for example, an Asian person would swing into the conversation the SJW girl was having with people that didn't know better, and explain, "this thing you're saying is a problematic behavior is not a problem, actually, they're not being bigots. It's fine." The girl may apologize, feign knowing better now and to not make that mistake again, and then go to ANOTHER group of people in the absence of the dissenting Asian person to correct the record, and tell that group that whole spiel over again about how white people playing ninja or whatever is bigotry, to try and make them believe something that wasn't true.
But if you didn't have a Mysteriously Materializing Person to correct the record on any given social or political topic being exploited by these people, then you were a very vulnerable target for misinformation in the name of progress. And there was nothing you could do about it, as a layman, but either go to college for the explicit purpose of disproving a water cooler statement someone made one day at lunch, or just dismiss it and get on with your life. Research meant investment in money and time and dedicating your life to that specific thing, just on the offchance to tell someone that either didn't know better, or did and still lied, they weren't telling the truth to a group of people they were trying to educate.
And that back and forth used to happen over MONTHS to YEARS as sources updated and the grapevine spoke and arguments were had.
Just oh my fucking god. The internet has streamlined that miserable back and forth shit so much. And I thank English Second Language people across the world for voluntarily swinging in like wrecking balls, whatever side you're on, because the language and regional barrier used to give these charlatans license to speak on your behalf.

applies to many other things, reading or watching badthinker media means you're infected with evil cooties
It’s thanksgiving season in the US which means that, like every year, there’s a flood of articles encouraging you to fight and/or break ties with your family over political discussions. Bearing that in mind, I’d like to remind you that trying to isolate you from your existing support networks is one of the primary warning signs of a cult.

Wild brawl in Collingwood overnight. 75-200 youths of African appearance fighting in the street in the early hours. 7 hospitalised. We’re speaking to residents who witnessed the mayhem @3AW693 What gets me is it’s now a crime under the new hatespeech laws to point out that these young men are supposedly refugees, yet they all seem to have no interest in returning home, have no families, don’t seem interested in getting jobs or even fitting into the new culture, and they always seem to share the same religion which I cannot name.... I can’t even say that I think mass immigration is bad. So thank you, feminists, for bring us these lovely people, who I am sure will treat women with respect and not rape or murder them. Free Speech. You Americans have it better than anywhere else in the globe because of it. Don’t give it up.

Regular reminder that I was and remain a militant atheist straight out of 2004, and that if I had the power I would absolutely resolve my differences with theists by genocide. It just rarely happens to come up these days.
Further reminder that modern progressivism is absolutely a religion, and if anything the most harmful one since it has active, expanding, and malicious power in cities close to where I live; if I had to make a Genocide Priority List I might put them first against the wall - the other obvious candidate being Islam, but really, they're looking much less threatening recently.

The purpose of the activism in question is to be a mindworm into the social dynamics and relationships and disseminate them to the grassroots, letting them know what new things are taboo or will get you considered a Bad Person with the weight of a bad impression or negative assessment coming to you if you look like the potential offender.
It's to draw lines in the sand and go, "If you're beyond this line, we will consider you a Bad Person, or adjacent to Bad People, for good people stand behind this line, not in front of it," And then watch you to see what you do. Do you go where they want you to be and say what they want you to say to prove your goodness, or do you out yourself and expose yourself to their hostile ignorance and polarizing world views, where they blame you for your own lack of cooperating or being mindful of their sensitivities for what they do to you by reaction.
When I was a young man, there was a period where the big swansong activism was to maintain that any time an unfamiliar white person used the word black to refer to those of sub-Saharan African descent, it was considered inherently close to a slur. The discourse that, "whites are inherently racist because white culture is racism" wasn't spoken out loud, but they would say, "You sound like an ignorant racist Confederate America Georgian slavemaster when you say black. Say African American." And if you just said black casually, someone that wanted to treat you and perform bad faith would just say they "read the racism" from you using the word black. Tried to make when non-black people used the term black out to be as archaic as using the word colored or negro. So if you didn't get with the program and slipped up, people that were punished and informed the word black was off limits would let you know, you'd just hit the same social faux pas as using a racial slur casually. And they used that to ostracize and shun people, because "tolerating racism is bad and if you do, we'll note it and tell others about you doing it."
Online activism is merely the same sort of interpersonal activism and nannying to "spread awareness" and impose new social moores and mentalities and justifications for whom gets punished for behavior or misbehavior, and what is the basis for what is correct and what won't be allowed to be the rules.
And anything can be MADE toxic and radioactive at any time if there's willing participants that will use any given logic to retroactively turn someone someone did, "problematic." There's lots of left-wing ablism that went into making fun of Ronald Reagan's dementia that would be decried now as "a product of its time" and wrong. It's about organizing control over what is acceptable and not and why and getting a mechanism to disseminate it from above. Social studies in college do this and have an entire social eco-system not unlike how churches in the North American Deep South function (or, used to)
And further examples? Look at any TERF space. That's simply radical feminism (derogatory). But, it's feminism centered around woman as a biological state, not adopting the belief that a woman is purely a social construct and gender existing outside of biology, divorcing the term from its biology and denying biology is necessary for it to exist as a woman at all, or that biological females were ever women on the baiss of their biology. TERFs writing poetry about being a female and synonymous with woman become ripe real estate for Trans INCLUSIVE Radical Feminists jumping up and going, "EXCUSE ME MA'AM BUT YOUR FEMINISM TREATS TRANSWOMEN AS WOMAN AS CISWOMEN, RIGHT?" And we all knows the answer to that question and the shitstorm it brings. Out of a seemingly positive, benign, shaped-to-seem-uncontroversial statement. That Trans Women Are Women, Just Like Cis Women, so cis women defining being a woman by their female sex are commiting a Bad Thing and Not Being Inclusive(tm) so they're committing a badthink and wrongthink.
Peer-to-peer activism would then dictate that the TERF then get cast out and rebuked by right-thinking radical feminists for their "bigotry" (whatever their true feelings and level of respect they have for transgendered people. Whether the usual slavering growling cis-exclusiveist or someone that believes transwomen are valid but woman is defined by their cisness first) And then those peers inform the rest that Samantha isn't cooperating by rebuking all ideas gender is anything but an idea you wear like a coat.
And Online Activism goes further, because the new Bad Thing comes from academic articles and academic writers that write thinkpieces that become the next two minute hate and outrage and because of their institutional authority and hierarchical position, the weight of their opinions becomes manifest in their sycophantic understudies. So any academic decides to write a piece about how microbrewing is white supremacy? The underlings beneath them follow, accept that as true and then decide to be progressive, good people, they have to treat microbreweries as white supremacist and microbrewers as racists- if they're white.
And as we saw during Gamergate among the Games Journos, that would organize the writers and then perform what were called Information Cascades to hitpiece certain subjects and treat that like they were the mouthpieces of Gamers and Good Videogame Culture, as if that was what gamers and gaming was clamoring for as an industry. They'd write about how "modern gaming is racist and white supremacist- here's how we can fix that" and postulate their ideological bullshit, using gaming culture as their platform no matter what the actual gamers had to say about it.
Online activism is about trying to create realities and control groups of people through fear via standards and ideology.
I feel like. Part of the reason we're seeing hot takes like "video games like Stardew Valley are bourgeoisie and you should feel bad for playing them" and "if any actor in a TV show even hints at supporting any part of Israel then we need to boycott that entire show" and stuff like that is.
Online activism does virtually nothing. It does virtually nothing, guys. You can reblog and repost stuff all day and it does nothing. And so there's this desperate need in people's minds to Do Something, but social media platforms have so thoroughly trapped us into the idea that This Is How You Connect With People, that we think blogging = activism.
But nothing we've reblogged thus far has made a significant difference in the world. So we keep reblogging, desperately, convinced that if we root out the real evil in our media consumption or if we pare down our beliefs to the One True Ideal and force everyone around us to share that ideal, then finally Something Will Change For The Better.
Log off. Go give blood; there's a critical shortage right now. Help someone in your community; it might not fix wars that are thousands of miles away but it'll help that person. Call or email your local representative about issues that matter to you. Fucking vote. Do something in the not-online space. It'll matter more than 100 posts in a row about Important Things.
