Uploaded chapter 12 and 13 (because I made 12 long enough to have three chapters)
12 has 1489 words
13 has 1057 words
Double Life: Bandersnatch of the Full Moon now has 13 chapters!
And it's October, so it's kinda fitting.

Mia Wasikowska's version of Alice in Alice in Wonderland (2010) validates her Magha Moon placement, as this portrayal of Alice is about her transforming into a fearless huntress. Even the tones of the film are very gothic, being directed by Magha Sun Tim Burton.
Tumblr media
In the film, Alice gets injured by a very hideous, fearsome creature, called the Bandersnatch.
Tumblr media
Even though she is injured by it, due to her Ketu-nakshatra influence, she is not afraid of the beast. She earns its trust by returning the eye it lost, her act of bravery and kindness essentially taming it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In return, the Bandersnatch leads her to the Vorpal Sword which she must use to slay the dragon. The beast even allows her to ride it in key moments of her journey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As Ketu nakshatras explore the theme of overcoming fear (through conquering and taming or slaying hideous beasts), we witness her transformative journey towards her fateful match with the Jabberwocky, a dragon-like monster.
Tumblr media
In the end, she becomes known as the fierce Dragon Slayer. As in true Mula fashion, she beheads it.
Tumblr media
Just like in the animation Hercules, in which Hercules, voiced by the Mula native Tate Donovan, beheads the water beast called Hydra.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, the monster slayer Buffy, from Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, is literally portrayed by Ashwini Sun Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Tumblr media
After my Venus Dominant Themes post, I see just how fierce and full of grit the fire signs are. I haven't yet done an exploration for Sun nakshatras, but the fire rashis have themes of action, following one's instincts and executing.

12 May 2025 — Day 1: Once Upon a Circle
Blog 01 | Interactive Storytelling
I walked into a room, full of questions and walked out with fragments of a hundred stories.
We didn’t just talk about stories we broke them open. Dusted their bones in ways lol.
We learned that:
A story is the ingredient.
The narration is the chef.
The narrator is the one who serves it
The narrative is the recipe you may or may not follow.
Isn’t that delicious?
We talked about how "medium shapes meaning" visuals, sound, silence, suggestion. A story told through footsteps isn’t the same as one whispered in candlelight.
We talked about Sapiens, My Tiger, Run Lola Run, Akira Kurosawa.
We watched Royal Star Battle Select—a short film that felt like a haiku in combat boots.
(And Bandersnatch is still buffering in the back of my mind.)
Then came the emoji assignment.
No words. No punctuation. Just moons, shadows, clocks, light. I wrote with me, and somehow, i made sense out of symbols. Or maybe nonsense - beautiful, deliberate nonsense.
We also played this live storytelling game in a circle. One sentence passed to the next, like a whisper or a secret or an accidental prophecy. Somewhere in the middle, we forgot how it began.
The story had a mind of its own.
And maybe that’s what interactive storytelling really is:
a story that forgets itself, and remembers you instead.
Or a you that forgets oneself and becomes the story instead.
Also, yes. We watched a horror short. Lovely.
Day 1 didn’t feel like an introduction.
It felt like we had already started long ago, and just remembered we were supposed to take notes.

HAUNTED
They said that the Crater was haunted.
No one was sure by who, or what. Nothing much lived up there. A few bandersnatches or ordinary wolves, the occasional vlakorados that lost its way in a storm. Nothing more.
It wasn’t what lived there that counted, of course; it was what - or who - might have died there.
Now and then some foolish hiker might wander by, passing through Icicle Inn in search of fresh supplies, then disappearing into the frozen waste, never to be seen again. Perhaps it was their spirits lingering in the deep, dark hollow of the Crater. Who could know?
Something caused the wolves to howl, at the dark of the moon, not the full. Something glowed along the horizon, small, flickering ghost lights - bone white - at the lip of the Crater on the blackest nights. The wind would bite harder, would cut like broken glass, drawing blood that froze instantly on the skin, and its voice would rise to a pitch that set one’s teeth on edge, and silence even the wolves.
There was malice in that shrieking wind. Words, almost, running underneath in a faint, bubbling stream, like the buzz of an insect, invisible, inescapable, incomprehensible.
Perhaps the unquiet dead made themselves heard, calling from the vast hollow of the Crater when the nights were coldest and darkest. Perhaps it was just the wind skirling across the jagged heights of the Crater’s walls. Cradle tales and old superstitions made shadowed shapes in dreams. Imagination ran wild when the days were short and nights were long, and children cried too easily at creaks and groans outside their cottage walls.
The wind, the wolves, the echo of ice-crack in the distance, the rush and rumble of thunder-snow; these were the answer.
After all, what else could it be?

Here are the winners of the 2019 Nebula Awards
Tumblr media
The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America is holding its Nebula Awards conference in Los Angeles this weekend, and tonight, the group announced the winners of the 2019 Nebula Awards, which honor the best science fiction and fantasy writing from 2018.
Mary Robinette Kowal’s The Calculating Stars, the first installment of her Lady Astronaut series, took home the top honor. The novel (and its companion, The Fated Sky) are set in an alternate history in which an asteroid landed off the coast of North America in 1953, setting off a climate catastrophe. To prevent the extinction of the human race, various nations around the world kick-start an alternate space race to colonize the Solar System before it’s too late.
The book’s central character, Emma York, is a former WASP who served during World War II and finds herself — and her fellow female pilots — shut out of the selection process to become an astronaut, and fights to ensure that they’ll be part of the space program. In addition to last year’s The Fated Sky, Kowal has added to the world with a number of short stories — “The Lady Astronaut of Mars” (which won the 2014 Hugo Award), “We Interrupt This Broadcast,” “Rocket’s Red,” “The Phobos Experience,” and “Articulated Restraint.” Fans of the series can also expect two additional Lady Astronaut novels in the near future: The Relentless Moon will come out in 2020, while The Derivative Base will arrive in 2022.

[Character] Aultena Sephimiri
She demanded to be heard, so here she is...
Tumblr media
Basic Statistics
Full Name:  Aultena Sephimiri Nickname:  ‘Tena or Tena Age: 25 Date of Birth:  22nd Sun of the 3rd Umbral Moon  (June 22nd) Species: Miqo’te, Keeper of the Moon Gender: Female Hometown:  Tailfeather, Dravanian Forelands, Eorzea Occupation: Hunter / Survivalist
This is a VERY long character worksheet.  So, consider yourself warned it’s a long read ahead!
Abilities
If they had an element, what would it be?  Aultena is best represented by Wind because of how free spirited she is.  She goes where the wind takes her. Can they use it? Aultena has no magical ability whatsover. Hand-to-Hand capability: Aultena is an excellent ranged fighter, but not so much in close quarters. She can defend herself, if pressed, but she’d rather pick off her targets from afar. When did they start learning? She has been learning the way of the bow since she could walk. Who taught them? Her mother, for her early years. Sillesti, her guardian, in later years. Weapons training:  Longbow and shortbow, dagger for close quarters self-defense. Physical strength:  Aultena is light and wiry, athletic and dextrous, but not so physically strong. Speed:  Fairly speedy. She relies on it and her dexterity to keep her out of most trouble.
Family
Maternal & Paternal Family Connection: Aultena’s extended family are also Keeper of the Moon miqo’te.  Her relationship with them is fairly non-existent on either side. Parents/Guardian: Aultena’s had a good, loving relationship with her parents who encouraged her to be independent and strong-willed. She was closest to her mother, but still had a good relationship with her father.  They were killed on a Clan Hunt when she was twelve. After that, she was cared for by a friend of the family, a Wildwood Elezen by name of Sillesti Abriel. Her relationship with Sillesti was also fairly good, though they did tend to butt heads on occasion. Birth order:  Aultena is the only child of her parents. (That she is aware of. There may be the possibility of other siblings -- for RP opportunities!) What is the character's family life like?  Growing up with her parents, Aultena was raised with a disciplined hand, but also with a lot of freedom for her to develop on her own. Miqo’te tribal traditions were explained to her, but not impressed upon her. It didn’t seem that important living out in Tailfeather among such varied people. Growing up with Sillesti, Aultena knew even more freedom, since Sillesti only disciplined her when she did something really wrong. What does their family love most about them? Her determination. Once Aultena puts her mind to something, she always tries to see it through to the end.  It’s part of what makes her an excellent huntress, she doesn’t let go of her quarry easily. Hate? Aultena has a temper, inherited from her mother. It causes her to butt heads with both her mother and Sillesti a lot, sometimes over inconsequential things. What would their family be described like by another person? From the outside, Aultena’s life with her parents seemed pretty idyllic; she got along with her parents and travelled with them often save on the more dangerous hunts they undertook. With Sillesti, it was much the same since they all lived close-by in Tailfeather; seeing her around Sillesti was nothing new. Have they ever had any pets?  Not yet. Maybe at a later date?
Relationships
Are they a virgin?  Nope! How did they lose it?  She had a literal roll in the hay in a chocobo barn with a handsome adventuring hyur, Tristane, that stayed in Tailfeather for a while. Have they ever cheated on a partner?  No. Given Aultena’s general lifestyle, her temper, and her wanderlust she’s never really been that committed to a partner.  It takes a lot for Aultena to invest that much in someone, so it takes a while and she has to build a lot of trust.  Trust she wouldn’t betray so easily. Who was their first crush?  Aultena doesn’t really crush on people. She has to be pretty emotionally invested in someone to find them attractive. First love? Her first love was that aforementioned hyur, Tristane Alexander. He was an adventurer, however, and met his end fighting a bandersnatch alpha on one of their many hunts. Aultena does NOT like to talk about this much. Are they in any kind of romantic relationship? Aultena is currently not in any sort of relationship at present.  Who is your character’s closest friend? Her current closest friend is probably her guardian, Sillesti. They get along well and he respects her space and independence while simultaneously providing a willing ear and advice when she needs it.
Favorites
Favorite foods: Miqo’bobs, of course! Least favorite food:  Anything with fish.  Living so far from the sea, she never really acquired a taste for it. Favorite colors:  Blues, she finds it soothing. Music: She loves listening to acoustic guitar. It’s what she grew up with, listening to her father play as a child. She inherited his guitar when he left it behind during that ill-fated Hunt and has learned to play it since. Literature: Sheet music?  Aultena isn’t much of a reader.  She CAN read, but rarely for entertainment. Smell: The forest after a good rain. Feeling: The softness of chocobo hatchlings. Season: Autumn. Place: Tailfeather, home, of course! Possession this character values most: Her most valued possession is her father’s guitar, since it’s really the last connection she has to them. It’s attached to many good memories sitting around the campfire as they hunted, listening to her father play it.
Physical Characteristics
Height: 5’6” Weight: 120 Body build: Wiry Athletic Eye Color:  Gold Hair:  Navy with lighter blue highlights, typically drawn back in a braid. Scent:  She smells mostly of pine. Very rarely any sort of artificial perfume, since it would be a dead-giveaway to her quarry on hunts. Voice:  See: Lenore Zann -- particularly as Aisha Clan-Clan. Health: Fairly good!  Her active lifestyle as a huntress keeps her physically fit.  She does have an allergy to cats, though.   Style:  Relaxed and easy to move in. She’s not all that fond of frilly dresses and binding undergarments like corsets.  (How do people even move in this?!) How do they walk? Aultena is very light-stepped, given how carefully she has to move on a hunt. Unconsciously graceful, but also kind of slouchy when she’s relaxed / not hunting. What are their Nervous Tics: Aultena’s ears are very expressive. When she’s nervous or afraid, her ears will tilt backward. The farther the tilt, the more severe the emotion. Usual Body Posture: When on the hunt, generally stiff and vigilant.  Not hunting, relaxed and slouchy.
Intellectual/Mental/Personality Attributes and Attitudes
Did they go to school?  Not really. She learned to read and write in her teen years from Sillesti who was taught in Ishgard. How smart are they?  Aultena is smart when it comes to survival and being afield.  She’s not really very book-smart or knowledgable about history or Eorzea at-large.   Character's short-term goals in life: Aultena wants to see the world beyond Tailfeather, especially after hearing about it from Tristane, who was fairly well-travelled. Character's long-term goals in life: To become a good enough hunter to kill the beast that killed her parents. How does your Character see themselves? Aultena sees herself as a bit of a nuisance to Sillesti, though she adores him like a father for everything he’s done for her. Among other people, she often sees herself as a clunky backwater heathen. How self-confident is your character? While hunting, Aultena is supremely confident and in charge of herself. In any other arena, she can be uncertain, easily frustrated, and reclusive. What makes their self-confidence waver?  Her lack of knowledge. She’s not as worldly as some folk, so she sometimes feels dumb when listening to them talk about the wider world. What would embarrass your character the most? Missing a shot on a hunt. How does your character feel about love?  It always ends. Nothing lasts. Enjoy it while you have it, but don’t rely on it for anything. About crime? Criminals ruin everything for everyone. Politics? She doesn’t follow politics, so she’d just stare and not understand. People of a different sexuality? Your body, your business. Different nationality/race? She’s fine with most races, though she has little love for Gnath. How does your character show affection/love? Spending time with them, staying in one place near them. Her free time and her freedom are key to who Aultena is, so when she’s willing to give that up for someone says volumes. She also likes giving them hand-made gifts or bringing them things back from her hunts.  How does your character handle grief?  She will usually go off somewhere by herself to cry where no one is watching. She doesn’t like talking about it, but will accept comfort / distraction when it’s offered. What are they like when they cry? She’s a burst crier. She’ll weep loudly and hard for a few minutes, recover, then cry again until she exhausts herself. What can make them cry?  Loss, primarily. The loss of her parents, then later losing Tristane makes her very sensitive to losing people.  Anger, she tends to cry when she gets really and truly angry. How does your character handle physical pain? Having been injured a number of times in her life on the hunt, Aultena deals with physical pain and injury fairly well. Emotional pain? Emotional pain, however, is not something she deals with well. Like a wounded, she’ll either lash out or retreat to where she feels the most comfortable / safe. Is your character typically a leader or a follower? She is fairly independent, so she’s a leader more than a follower.  If it’s a situation she’s unfamiliar with, though, she has no issues with following someone else. Are they 'big picture' or 'little details'?  Little details matter in a hunter’s life. What kind of energy level does your character typically display? On the hunt, she’s fairly high, but controlled and focused energy.  Intent.  Anywhere else, though, she seems sort of lazily vigilant -- you know, like a cat. Describe their sense of humor:  Her sense of humor can be a bit dry.  But if she’s feels comfortable enough with someone, she can be a bit of a mischievous prankster.  Something she used to torment Sillesti with a lot. Hobbies:  Whittling / Woodcarving, playing music (esp. guitar, includes singing), cooking, leatherworking, collecting hunting trophies. Talents:  Singing, playing music, hunting. Extremely unskilled at:  Formal dancing, sewing, makeup / hairstyling If any, what musical instruments can they play?  Lute, guitar, and harp, primarily.  Pan flute.
Emotional Characteristics
How does character relate to others?  Aultena can be bluntly opinionated at times, calling things like she sees them. It can rub others the wrong way.  She tries to be understanding, but really emotional people make her uncomfortable. How does the character deal with anger? She stalks off and shoots things. With sadness? She runs off on her own or to where she feels safest to cry. With conflict? It depends on the situation. For emotional conflict, she’ll stalk off to puzzle things out for herself. Physical conflict, she’ll fight like a demon. Mental conflict, she’ll just shut down and withdraw. With change?  With as much as her parents came and went and with so many varied people and adventurers that came through Tailfeather, Aultena is relatively good with change. She likes to experience new and different things. With loss?  Given her life experiences, Aultena does not cope with loss well. What does your character want out of life? Besides to avenge her parents against the beast that killed them… I doubt she knows at this point. What would your character like to change in his/her life? Aultena would have her parents and Tristane back. She doesn’t regret much else. What motivates your character? The people she cares about.  Hunger.  Money.  Hunters live to sell their kills or to eat off the meat those kills provide.   What frightens your character?  Losing people she cares about.  Dragons.  Bandersnatches.  Are they afraid of the Dark? No, she’s spent too many nights in the wild, listening to the forest-song to be afraid of the dark. Death? Aultena is very afraid of death.  Her parents weren’t that old when they were killed.  Neither was Tristane. In the back of her mind, she wonders if she’s doomed to die an early death, too. What makes your character happy? New and different experiences.  Good food.  Fine booze.  Excellent company.  A successful hunt.  Camping under the stars.   Is your character judgmental of others?  Not really.  Like with animals, Aultena gauges things by how they act toward her and she responds accordingly. Is your character generous or stingy? A bit of both, to be honest. She’s stingy among strangers, but generous to those she cares about and her neighbors. Is your character generally polite or rude?  She can be a bit of both here, too, depending on how she’s treated or received. Optimistic or Pessimistic? She’s generally a realist. Introvert or Extrovert?  Something of an introvert until she gets comfortable. Daredevil or Cautious?  Cautious.  Hunters don’t live long by being reckless. Logical or Emotional?  Both, depending on the situation.  Hunting?  Logical.  Socially? Emotional. Disorderly and messy or methodical and neat?  Methodical and neat. Being able to know exactly where anything is at any given moment so she can go on the hunt is key for her. Would they rather be working or relaxing?  She likes both.  She loves the thrill of the hunt and to travel, but there’s little else better than relaxing after a successful day. How do they feel about animals?  Given her experiences as a hunter, Aultena has more respect for animals than she does people.
Spiritual Characteristics
Do they consider themselves religious?  She prays to them to keep her safe during the hunt, but she’s not devout by any means. What God(s)/Goddess(s) do they believe in?  As a Keeper of the Moon, she learned of Menphina from her mother. She has some small regard for Oschon, as the God of Wanderers.
Bonus: Theme Song Sunset by Daria Semikina

Alphabet Tag Thing
I was tagged by @convoluted-moonscape
Rules: Answer the questions in a new post and tag 10 blogs you would like to get to know better.
Oh gosh, I’ll tag people based on who Tumblr lets me tag... @bannableoffense @stephbotreblogs @karentranceypants @friedcherryblossomprincess @awmbh
A: Age - 26
B: Birthplace - A small town in England.
C: Current time - 5:30am
D: Drink you had last - Tea, Yorkshire Gold, no sugar but a little bit of milk
E: Easiest person to talk to: Myself, I don’t argue back
F: Favourite song: This is a hard one to pick as it changes nearly daily, but right now it is “Not The Villian” by S.J. Tucker
G: Grossest memory: Most likely the time I was hiking in the heavy rain and had to walk through deep, viscous and slime like mud that soaked through everything I was wearing and was then stuck in those clothes for another 4 days.
H: Hogwarts House: I don’t know, which one actually leaves with some A-Levels? I’m going to say Hufflepuff?
I: In love?: I’m always in love with something or someone.
J: Jealous of people: I do get jealous now and again, but I tend to spot it and put a stop to it pretty quickly.
K: Not in this list but I will point out that Kombucha is delicious, as is Kimchi.
L: Love at first sight or should I walk by again?: I’m not one for love at first sight, and I would prefer to not have someone orbiting me like some kind of lusty moon. So maybe take a seat?
M: Not being used, so I’ll use this moment to mention that some Mesmerists believed that it was all about channelling magnetic fluid within people. I like to imagine that if Mesmerism had remained in vogue up until the present day we would see energy drinks that promised to top up your magnetic fluid and there would be mesmerists wandering around with their own brand of energy drink.
N: Another missing letter?: Yes, it is. Thus I will use this space to point out that “Nob End” is the name of a place in England and that Nick Lowe is a wonderful songwriter, and I love his song “Hope For Us All”
O: One wish: Some peace because right now the world seems to need it.
P: Person you called last: ....I actually don’t remember, I never really call anyone these days. I think my family?
Q: Question you are always asked: “Oh my gawd are you from England?!” usually followed by “Do you know Harry Potter/The Queen/Bandersnatch Cumberbund”
R: Reason to smile: We built a massive underground building for the express purpose of smashing fundamental bits of the universe into each other. And if that isn’t the epitome of humanity, I don’t know what is.
S: Song you sang last: “Paranormal’ by Alice Cooper (I’m really loving his new album)
T: Time you woke up: 5 am
U: Underwear colour: Rainbows
V: Vacation destination: This year it was England. But my favourite is still California.
W: Worst habit: I have a long list, self-doubt is somewhere near the top.
X: X-rays: Had a few as part of medical check ups. My favourite is the chest X-ray where you have to hug the board because it looks so silly.
Y: Your favourite food: Curry!
Z: Zodiac sign: Tarus. Yes, I am full of bull.

759. [MOV] Star Trek Into Darkness
SCORE:
Tumblr media
(3/5 stars)
The Enterprise, in surveying the planet Nibiru, has discovered that a volcano is due to erupt that will likely wipe out most life on the planet, Yellowstone caldera style. There is a primitive village at the base of the volcano, and Kirk lures them away from the initial blast zone by stealing one of their sacred scrolls, causing them all to chase him and McCoy until they jump off a cliff and swim to the Enterprise, stupidly hidden underwater. Meanwhile, Sulu, Uhura and Spock are flying inside the caldera to lower Spock down on a line to deploy a device that will freeze the eruption in its tracks. The ash intake is damaging the shuttle's engines and when Spock's tether accidentally severs, Sulu is forced to leave him behind on a small rock surrounded by lava or the shuttle will crash. The only way to get Spock out of there is with a direct line of sight transport, but they'd need to come out of the ocean to do that, exposing the ship to the view of the natives and violating the Prime Directive. Spock tells them to leave him behind, but Kirk ignores his protest and does it anyway, beaming Spock aboard just before the bomb goes off and freezes the eruption. He shrugs off the Prime Directive implications even as the natives begin drawing silhouettes of the Enterprise in the sand.
Back at Earth, Kirk and Spock have been called to report to Admiral Pike, who asks about the Nibiru survey mission. Kirk calls it uneventful, which doesn't mesh with the report Spock filed regarding their violation of the Prime Directive. Kirk is angry that Spock went behind his back to tell on him for saving his life, and Pike dismisses Spock from the room to dress Kirk down for filing a false report, violating the Prime Directive, and furthermore failing to even understand what he did wrong. He says that there was already a hearing convened and they've decided to strip Kirk of his command and boot him all the way down to cadet.
Pike finds Kirk at a bar and cockblocks him to share a drink. He tells Kirk that they gave the Enterprise back to him, and he was able to lessen Kirk's punishment. He'll serve as Pike's first officer with Spock transferred to the Bradbury. They're called in to an emergency meeting at Starfleet Headquarters, where Admiral "Robocop" Marcus informs them he got an email from Mickey before he 9-11'd Section 31 that he was coerced into doing it by Michaelvick Dogfightmatch. Admiral Marcus is declaring a manhunt for the dude, but it doesn't add up to Kirk, especially because he doesn't know it was a Section 31 facility and on its face appears to just be a library. He realizes that once said terror attack would happen, all the captains and first officers would convene in this very room.
Sure enough, Obamadict Cumbarack shows up in a small craft to Godfather 3 the room, killing pretty much everyone except Marcus, Spock and Kirk. Pike gets hit in the chest and Spock melds with him as he passes. Kirk ties a rifle to a wall-mounted firehose and throws it through a broken window into the engine of the shuttle, crippling it. He sees Wimbledon Tennismatch beam out as his craft breaks apart around him. Scotty is able to locate the transwarp beaming device he had aboard and has found its coordinates: "Not Khan" beamed himself to Qo'noS, the one place they can't go.
Kirk requests Marcus reinstate him as Captain of the Enterprise and reassign Spock back as his first officer so he can enter Klingon space and pursue Frumious Bandersnatch to bring him to justice. Marcus grants him his request with specific orders. He'll arm the Enterprise with experimental torpedoes that can be fired from long range and will be undetectable by the Klingons. They'll warp in to the edge of Klingon space and fire on Buttonwillow McKittrick's location. Along with the torpedoes comes a weapons expert, Dr. Carol Wallace, which everyone going into the film already knew was actually Carol Marcus, but the filmmakers sure know how to insult their fans by pretending they pulled one over on them. Spock is also suspicious of her and looks into it. Scotty has a serious problem allowing the torpedoes on board because he doesn't know their composition or how they might interfere with the Enterprise engines, and when Kirk orders him to approve them despite his objections, he resigns. Kirk assigns Chekov to replace him as Chief Engineer, saying "Go put on a red shirt," which is a little less funny now considering Anton Yelchin died shortly after filming Star Trek Beyond.
Before Scotty leaves the Enterprise, he implores Kirk not to use the torpedoes, advice that Kirk takes to heart. As they warp to Qo'noS, he announces that they will be seeking to arrest "John Harrison" and only use the torpedoes as a last resort. Spock discovers that Carol Wallace is Carol Marcus, the daughter of Admiral Marcus, and she forged her transfer papers to get aboard. Before she can explain what she's doing here, the Enterprise violently drops out of warp in the Klingon neutral zone due to a coolant leak Chekov discovers. Kirk, Spock, Uhura and two redshirts take a ship confiscated from Harry Mudd and dress in civilian clothes so as not to tie their mission to Starfleet, while Sulu is given the conn and sends a transmission to "Khan't" warning him to surrender or get BTFO. Chekov will try to get the engines up and running before they return.
It looks like the Klingons overmined Praxis a little earlier in this timeline, as Qo'noS has a moon that's breaking apart. The transporter coordinates lead to an uninhabited section of Qo'noS, and en route to its location, Uhura decides to start up an argument with Spock over his rash actions on Nibiru, his seeming lack of care for her feelings when he chose to die, and she tries to bring Kirk into the argument. Spock counters that he's felt grief and despair before, when he melded with Pike, and knew it was the same feeling he felt magnified when Vulcan died, and so he chooses not to feel it again, but it does not affect his feelings for Uhura.
Even though it's an abandoned area of Qo'noS, they have the luck to encounter a random patrol and despite putting on a good chase are completely surrounded. Kirk is ready for a fight, but Uhura opts to use her Klingon to attempt to negotiate instead. She meets face to face with the patrol leader and tells him they are here to hunt down a human criminal with no honor. The Klingon is not moved by her calls to his sensibility, and begins throttling her. But of course, Trenchadict Matrixbatch shows up in a long coat and a bunch of guns to blow up the Klingons. Once the patrol is eradicated, he demands to know the number of torpedoes the Enterprise is armed with. Spock says they have 72, and "Harrison" immediately surrenders. Kirk accepts his surrender, then punches him a bunch. It doesn't seem to phase his prisoner one bit.
On the Enterprise brig, "Harrison" notes they haven't gone to warp yet, suggesting he suspects sabotage. He gives Kirk coordinates to investigate, saying there will be answers to his war on Starfleet there, and he suggests they open a torpedo to see what's inside. Spock warns that he's trying to get into Kirk's head, but Kirk listens anyway because something doesn't add up. He calls Scotty back on Earth and asks him to do him a favor and investigate the coordinates, which take Scotty to a secret shipyard orbiting Jupiter. Speaking with Carol Marcus, she explains that she forged her credentials because she had full access to Section 31's weapons programs except for these torpedoes which disappeared off the books, and she wanted to investigate. They take the ship to a nearby planetoid where Doctors McCoy and Marcus perform surgery on a torpedo and discover it's housing a cryotube with a 300-year-old man inside.
Kirk returns to the brig to find out what's going on, where Bunchacrunch Creamsicle hams it up to reveal that his name... is... KHAN. As if that means anything to Kirk, but maybe Khan was playing it up for the fourth wall. I should point out that Khan was previously played by a Mexican actor portraying an Indian man and now he's suddenly Whitey McLondon. The only thing I can think is that in this timeline, Khan, being of South Asian descent, was likely engineered with the British colonialism gene, turning him into the Englishest Englishman who ever Britted. He explains that Admiral Marcus has a goal of a militarized Starfleet, particularly after the Narada incident, and went and found the Botany Bay to get insight from genetic augments on building new weapons and ships. He held Khan's crew hostage to force him to do the work. Khan hid his crew's cryotubes in the torpedoes he was developing, but apparently Marcus found them. Khan assumed they had been killed, which is why he started waging war on Starfleet. He believes Marcus sabotaged the Enterprise so that it would be found when it launched the torpedoes, sparking a war against the Klingons that Marcus wants.
Proving his point, Admiral Marcus warps in on a big scary new Dreadnought-class vessel called the USS Vengeance. (Who calls it that? The script, apparently. It's never mentioned in the film.) Marcus and Kirk briefly pretend like they don't know that the other person knows that they know, but Khan was pretty much right. Marcus demands Khan be killed and asks him handed over. Kirk lies and says their transporters are down, and then tells Marcus Khan is in Engineering and they'll lower shields to let the Vengeance beam him over. He's really just buying time to make sure that Chekov has warp back online. Shields are never dropped, and they warp back to Earth.
Kirk figures they're safe, doubting the Vengeance can catch up to them, but Carol says the Vengeance has an advanced warp drive and will definitely catch up to them, which it does, firing weapons on the Enterprise and knocking it out of warp in orbit of the Moon. Marcus beams Carol over to the Vengeance and declares the Enterprise crew in league with Khan. He'll execute them all as traitors, even as Kirk begs to be solely held responsible. But before the Vengeance can fire again, all systems reboot. Scotty snuck aboard the Vengeance when he found it in the Jupiter shipyard, and is actively sabotaging it as he can.
Since it will take some time for the Vengeance to restore systems, Kirk sees an opportunity despite the Enterprise's own weapons being offline. Khan knows the Vengeance inside and out, being one of its developers. They turn the ship to align with a cargo bay airlock port on the Vengeance, and Kirk and Khan launch themselves out of an Enterprise airlock in EVA suits to traverse the gap in space. Scotty is accosted by a security officer while manning the airlock port and tries to stall for time, apologizing to him right before he opens the airlock and the guard is blown out into space as Kirk and Khan fly in. Kirk gives Khan a phaser locked to stun, and they head for the bridge.
Spock, meanwhile, gives his old buddy Spock Prime a call and asks him about Khan. Spock Prime warns him that Khan Noonien Singh was one of their most formidable foes and was only defeated at great cost. This scene really didn't need to be in here as it added nothing other than giving Spock Prime another scene when we got a wonderful sendoff for him last film. We all already know Khan is bad, he's the bad guy in the trailers. And since this situation is completely different from Wrath of Khan other than Khan is the bad guy, any advice Spock Prime gives is going to be generic at best and ultimately no payoff comes from it other than to remind people about Wrath of Khan, a much better movie.
Kirk also doesn't trust Khan and tells Scotty to drop him as soon as they hit the bridge. They take the bridge and Scotty stuns Khan, but his superior genetics let him shrug off the stun early and he starts kicking everyone's ass before going full Mountain vs Oberyn, crushing Admiral Marcus's skull between his bare hands. He demands Spock beam the torpedoes to the Vengeance, pointing out that if he doesn't comply, he'll just knock out their life support system since his crew will be unaffected in their cryotubes. Spock beams them over and beams back Kirk, Scotty and Carol. Khan resumes firing on the Enterprise anyway, but Spock had set the torpedoes for timed detonation, and the Vengeance gets fucked up. Kirk worries that they killed Khan's crew, but they removed the tubes beforehand and have them stored in sickbay.
But the damage the Enterprise suffered causes main power to go down and despite it being in orbit of the Moon five minutes ago it starts falling into the Earth's atmosphere. Kirk and Scotty head to Engineering in an Inception-inspired gravity tumbling scene. They can't reinitialize the warp core because an injector is misaligned, and there's no time to clear the chamber of radiation to fix it. Gee, that sounds a little familiar. Kirk is going to go in to do it anyway, and knocks Scotty out to stop his protestations. He manages to kick the injector back in place, and the ship restores power, rising out of the clouds.
In the most offensively derivative scene, Scotty calls Spock down to Engineering as they steal half the lines from Wrath of Khan while Spock and Kirk have a tearful conversation through a pane of glass. Kirk succumbs to his radiation exposure and dies. But, c'mon, we know it's not going to take, because Kirk's only weakness is shoddy bridge construction. Spock, in sadness and anger, yells "KHAAAAAN!" and I, in anger, yell "ABRAAAMS!!!!"
This brings me to a recurring point of contention with the JJverse films. There are plenty of human characters with emotions in these movies that don't cry, yet the stoic Spock has to be made compelling once a film by turning into a blubbering mess. Look, we get it, we all saw "The Naked Time" (or I did) and remembered him crying that he couldn't confess his love for his mother. It was a great moment. And it was made possible because he was intoxicated, not because he was in an emotional situation, and it was an incredibly rare moment in the series. Spock can be somber without resorting to tears. To be clear, I am not hating on characters crying in movies. I think that is perfectly fine. I am hating on the choice to rob Spock of his primary characteristic every movie to service lazy storytelling.
Khan and the Vengeance are not quite dead yet, and he decides to take his ship on a collision course for San Fransisco, first smashing into Alcatraz (what is this, a Roland Emmerich film?) then colliding with several skyscrapers. Khan survives this crash. They can't beam Khan up, but they can beam Spock down, who chases Khan through the panicked streets of San Fran, ending up on a flying car-top battle. Meanwhile, McCoy discovers that Khan's blood injected into a dead tribble restored it to life, and realizes that death no longer holds meaning in the Star Trek universe because they can just harvest Khan's platelets forever. Uhura beams down to stop Spock from killing Khan (though, as just established, wouldn't his superblood prevent that anyway?) and Spock just delivers a no-holds-barred beatdown instead.
Kirk wakes up in the hospital a few weeks later, neutering his heroic sacrifice for the Enterprise. Khan has been stuck back in a cryotube with the rest of the Botany Bay crew. A year passes and San Franscisco and the Enterprise have been fixed up. Kirk gives a speech about not letting enemies of the Federation pull Starfleet into militarization and they should focus instead on exploration. Boy, that sure would have been a nice message to tell Paramount at the start of this project. The crew boards the Enterprise and prepares to embark on a 5-year deep space mission. About time. It's only taken them two movies to get to a point where they can do the movies they should have been doing all along.
NITPICKS
Hey you know what would be better than lowering yourself into an active volcano to place a suitcase bomb then waiting for a starship to leave an ocean and expose itself to the natives so it can line-of-sight beam you? Staying in fucking orbit where nobody can see you and beaming the suitcase bomb down.
They could have called that bomb anything. They chose to call it a cold fusion bomb. That is not at all what cold fusion means.
What really bugs me about the violation of the Prime Directive is that Kirk never actually learns his lesson. He's only thrust back into the captain's chair out of necessity. At no point does he express regret for how he handled the Nibiru mission, nor does he even seem to comprehend the purpose of Starfleet's number 1 rule.
They make a big deal about giving Sulu the bridge like it's never happened. Sulu has, in fact, commanded the Enterprise before, last film, when Kirk and Spock were aboard the Narada.
The on-screen text identifies the Klingon homeworld as Kronos. It is, in fact, Qo'noS.
The Enterprise is in orbit of the Moon when it starts to careen towards the Earth. A quarter million miles is, in fact, pretty dang far, and the Moon would have had the stronger local gravity well.
Between two cuts of Kirk and Spock's hands against the window, in the first cut they are both making the Vulcan salute, and the next they are both holding their hands normally, with no transition out of said salute.
Why didn't McCoy test the blood of any of the other 72 augments to see if maybe they had the same magical superblood? They might not have needed Khan at all.
FAVORITE QUOTES
Spock: Had the mission had gone according to plan, Admiral, the indigenous species would never have been aware of our interference. Pike: That's a technicality. Spock: I am Vulcan, sir. We embrace technicality. Pike: Are you giving me attitude, Spock? Spock: I am expressing multiple attitudes simultaneously, sir.
Kirk: Why the archive? All that information is public record, and if he really wanted to damage Starfleet, this could just be the beginning. Marcus: The beginning of what, Mister Kirk? Kirk: Sir, in the event of an attack, protocol mandates that senior command gather captains and first officers at Starfleet HQ, right here. In this room.
Spock: Regulations aside, this action is morally wrong. Kirk: Regulations aside, pulling your ass out of a volcano was morally right. And I didn't win any points for that.
Kirk: We have our orders, Scotty. Scott: That's what scares me. This is clearly a military operation. ls that what we are now? Because I thought we were explorers.
Kirk: Are you guys fighting? Uhura: I'd rather not talk about it, sir. Kirk: Oh, my God. What is that even like?
Kirk: This isn't going to be a problem, is it, you two working together? Uhura: Absolutely not. Spock: Unclear.
McCoy: You just sat that man down at a high stakes poker game with no cards and told him to bluff. Now Sulu's a good man, but he is no captain. Kirk: For the next two hours, he is. And enough with the metaphors, all right? That's an order.
Uhura: At that volcano, you didn't give a thought to us. What it would do to me if you died, Spock. You didn't feel anything. You didn't care. And I'm not the only one who's upset with you. The Captain is too. Kirk: No. No, no. Don't drag me into this. ...She is right.
Spock: It is true I chose not to feel anything upon realizing that my own life was ending. As Admiral Pike was dying, I joined with his consciousness and experienced what he felt at the moment of his passing. Anger. Confusion. Loneliness. Fear. I had experienced those feelings before, multiplied exponentially on the day my planet was destroyed. Such a feeling is something I choose never to experience again. Nyota, you mistake my choice not to feel as a reflection of my not caring. Well, I assure you, the truth is precisely the opposite.
McCoy: You know, when I dreamt about being stuck on a deserted planet with a gorgeous woman, there was no torpedo.
Khan: Intellect alone is useless in a fight, Mister Spock. You, you can't even break a rule. How would you be expected to break bone?
Kirk: I'm not aligning with him, I'm using him. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Spock: An Arabic proverb attributed to a prince who was betrayed and decapitated by his own subjects.

“A shadow has been cast over the desert.”
A group of the imprters followed Inferno into southern Thanalan to meet with the brootherhood of ash. Bara, Teagan. Erby, Izzy, Sterrbhar, Alec, Aerik and Saelsria made up the group. They listened to the envoy. Thogoc explained to the group of a creature destroying the ambient aether and killing his own brothers as well as the tempered Amal’jia.
With agreeing to help, the group left on their quest to investigate. Saels hung back and had to leave for other business matters. Inferno promised him that the group would be well cared for. Further they moved into the Sagoli, expecting anything to happen.
Out of the sand, sink holes began to appear. The first hole dragged Izzy under the shifting sands. The others followed in after him, not wanting to leave their friend to fend for himself.
Inside the hole, it turned out to be a cave. It was dark, the sound of water and dark dwelling creatures echoed off the walls.
Tumblr media
Aerik and Teagan made sure Izzy was okay and tended to any injury he sustained from the fall.
Through the darkness of the cave, the sound of clicking bounced off the walls around the men. They kept each other in sight as a creature stepped into the light from their magic and the moon filtering in from above.
At the size of a full grown bandersnatch. This chimera had mutated. The lion and goat heads fused together. The serpent dead and nothing but a tail that the creature dragged behind. It appeared to have no eyes and used other methods to get around and sense its pray.
The importers held their breath and made no sudden movements. However their stealth was broken due to a sudden link pearl call that vibrated off the walls with so many bodies together with the same channel. The chimera engaged an attack.
Try as they could, their attacks didn’t seem to be effective, but as Izzy attacked popped a blister on the Chimera’s back. A foul smelling ooze splattered across him and Inferno. The group had to get out, two of them were getting sicker by the second and they were sitting ducks down there. So out of the hole they scrambled. Inferno and Izzy were rushed back to the company house for examination.
For the moment they were all safe from the monster in the dark. But Inferno and Izzy were not out of the woods yet.
“They are tainted with Allagan rot...”
