Título: Tarjeta de Entrenador Rhóhnʌ GBC 🌄🍁
Tumblr media
Jejejeje xD Buenas xD/

barbary lions
The almost extinct lion subspecies called "Barbary lions" (Panthera Leo Leo) also known as the "Atlas lion" (reminds me of Aslan from the film 'Narnia') so beautiful and unique due to their morphology and tendency to live in solitude. They are locally extinct but were once native to North Africa .. mountainous with almost only 100 (apparently) left in cared captivity. Though only a handful left, these captive zoos and sanctuaries participate in a global collaborative breeding program to ensure the species' future survival.
The last record of a wild Barbary Lion was shot in Morocco in 1942.
Last year, a zoo in Belfast opened up a new enclosure that is now home to Qays, Fidda and Theibba.
Reading up on this got me so emotional ... like they're sooo chill.

And with my prints left in the sand
For sure to fade away
I realize there's no final stand,
No way for me to stay.
I'll leave it all behind with grace
But you'll always bear the shame
Of the majesty that was my mane
And all that we became.
Going forward to the setting sun
You spot me from the skies
No way to fight nor way to run
It's the last you'll see my kind.
the infamous 'last sighting of a barbary lion in the wild' photo taken by marcelin flandrin (1925) haunts me to my core. there's something so achingly poetic about it.

Research | Barbary Lions
Tumblr media
I realised during conceptualisation that I was being too broad with my chosen subject matter, when I had a perfectly good idea for a concept within my research itself. The story of the extinction of the Barbary Lion is a tragic one, so I could write a book that is allegorical in nature to that, following a character living out the "life" of a Barbary Lion. I also intend to take inspiration from The Hero's Journey itself to create the story.
As the Barbary Lions are thought extinct during the time this is being created, there is not much information to go off with 100% certainty about their behaviour or ecology. However, it is believed that these lions were one of the few that were solitary in nature. This is due to most sightings of these lions being of single specimens, or a duo—even scarcer still would a couple with offspring be recorded (Black, 2015). Further, it is easier to corner and shoot individuals than it is to separate one from a group which was likely how the species was driven to extinction. The general belief is that its extinction is mainly attributed to the spread of firearms and bounties for lion killings during the early 20th Century. Additionally, it is thought that it was these lions that were held captive for entertainment in Rome's infamous Coliseum, and the last killed lion recorded was in 1922, by a French Colonial in Morocco (Platt, 2013).
However, according to some eyewitness reports, it is believed that these lions survived well into the 50s, and even as late as 1965 (Black et al., 2013). The last credible sighting of these lions was in Algeria, 1956, when a bus of people reportedly saw a lion in a forested area. This forest was alas, destroyed in the French-Algerian war, which would make the Barbary Lion one of the few species to have gone extinct as a casualty of war. Of course, academics discourage from declaring the species as extinct, which would remove any incentive to keep looking for potentially fragmented groups and subsequent conservation efforts of such areas.
However, while the species is generally thought to be extinct in the wild, there are some zoos which report the species alive and well in captivity (Black et al., 2013). The Rabat Zoo in Morocco claims to have 35 purebred specimens in their custody. Black thinks it might be possible that some of the Rabat "Royal" cats are purebloods, although he concedes that the necessary genetic tests to prove it would be difficult to accomplish without both money and better reference material. "The only reliable reference samples are museum specimens—bones and taxidermy skins which are mostly more than 140 years old—so a full genomic comparison is not currently possible." There is a possibility that the zoo may have fudged the truth a little, and instead houses genetic descendants of the Barbary lion, crossed with other species. In other words, hybrids.
So what have we learned? Well, it appears Simon Black and his peers are the leading (and only) credible source of information on Barbary Lions and their extinction. Aside from the two sources mentioned here, Black has published several other papers on the topic and in regards to conservation of the species, most of which are too similar to each other to note here. I think the next step from here for me is to research the representation of lions in mythology and art and the habits of lions in general, particularly during hunting since this particular species is believed to be asocial.

Título: Rhóhnʌ GBC 56 x 56 px 🍁
Tumblr media
Sencillo, bonito y referencial xD jajaja!

The Barbary Lion: Are There Any Still Alive Today?
The Barbary Lion: Are There Any Still Alive Today? In 1942, the last known Barbary lion was killed in Morocco.
The Barbary lion still exists but in a mixed bloodline that makes it hard to find a pure true individual of the Barbary lions.
Several programs were established trying to facilitate its bloodline from other Asiatic lions of Asia or other African Lions of other sub-species.
Its extinction in the wild is a sad reality and its mixed bloodline is too a sad reality that gives us a clear vision of the mass need to protect the majestic lion: the symbol of strength and royalty of our human civilizations!
