Cider: BASIC vs. SERIOUSLY THO

A common question people pose to me is essentially: “What is the easiest and cheapest thing to brew?” I tell those people that cider is the easiest and cheapest thing to brew. Then they ask me, “How can I get started?” 

Well, let’s do that. I will demonstrate two simple ways to make a gallon of cider. Both of the recipes are extremely easy to carry out, but the BASIC gallon recipe features ingredients that you can purchase for less than $4 and equipment you likely already have at home. The most exotic part of the whole thing is the yeast. If you don’t have a local home brew store that carries yeast then either move off your isolated compound and reintegrate yourself into society, or follow the links in the ingredients list. 

BASIC 

Ingredients

1 gallon of not organic apple juice from concentrate 

1 packet champagne yeast 

Equipment

gallon glass jug 

aluminum foil

For sanitization, I will rinse my gallon jug out thoroughly, then wash it in the dishwasher. Then I’ll rinse it out again. I’m all about rinsing. I’ll do the same thing with my funnel, then I’ll pour the apple juice into the gallon jug through the funnel. Then I’ll add the yeast. For the rustic touch, I’ll use aluminum foil as sort of an airlock.

SERIOUSLY THO 

Ingredients

1 gallon organic apple juice from concentrate

1 packet fruit wine yeast

1 teaspoon yeast nutrient

3/4 cup table sugar

Equipment

gallon fermentation jar with airlock

metal spoon

As you can see, this recipe takes advantage of a minimal investment in home brewing. For sanitization here I will make a solution of Io-STAR in the glass jar, and place the spoon in there. Then I will dump the solution and allow the jar to air dry or rinse it out. I’ll pour the apple juice and yeast nutrient into the jar, and stir. Then I’ll attach the airlock, put all this stuff in a dark place and go chill for a while. 

In theory, all of the additions to SERIOUSLY THO, from the organic apple juice to the wine yeast, should improve both the taste and efficiency. After fermentation and bottling, I’ll compare the ABV and taste of both recipes.

23 years ago, on this sacred date 24th February 1997, I started to understand the meaning of to live independently far away from family and home. I started to discover the real definition of struggle and hardship etc. Indeed i was born 'without the silver spoon' and i vividly remembered on how my late father was struggling (loaning here and there 😔) to provide adequate needs for me to live on my own at MRSM Beseri, Perlis. TBF, i was no 'scorer' or straight A student, my semester results were below average & my SPM result was so-so...However i was/am blessed with wonderful friendship, brotherhood, the togetherness, kind souls, etc since then till now. This must be one of the memorable summerslams of my life, eventhough most of my friends aren’t there.

This teambuilding activity is where you meet new people and extend your network. Not to be trapped with the people you’ve been with eversince. It was nice to have new fresh friends. Those who will take their time to know you better, because they don’t know anything about you. 

It was refreshing to have new people in my life. Eventhough they will not permanently be there, they are here for me now, and that is what matters.
