“Geez, you couldn’t bother waiting just a little?” you hear, a heavy hand landing on your shoulder and pulling you in close before you can properly process it; without warning, Taehyun is pulling you into him, an innocent smile on his face when you look at him in shock. 

“Smells good,” he hums, pulling you along and back into the sight of your parents; the atmosphere is just as stale as you remember it to be, ignoring the pleased look on your mother’s face as Taehyun leads you towards them sweetly. “I can see why you were in such a rush to get back down here.”

The sight of your mother’s flattered expression and the continuation of Taehyun’s kiss-ass comments makes it hard for your face to remain neutral; slumping back into your seat, you opt to remain silent as the two brothers begin to rave about the meal in front of them— your mother gushes and beams at the onslaught of compliments, and you’ve found yourself to have already lost your appetite by the time you’ve noticed Seojun’s eyes filled with pride from the interactions. 

“Everything okay?” You feel as though you’ve been placed under a microscope for observation; when you turn to the owner of the voice, you find Yeonjun staring at you intensely— when your eyes meet his, he glances down at your plate, his brows furrowing in concern as he continues. “You’ve barely touched anything. Are you feeling okay?” 

“Oh, uhm,” everyone’s attention has turned to you; the sudden spotlight has you stuttering stupidly, eyes glued to your plate as you move your food around nervously. “I’m fine. Just… not very hungry.”

“Sweetie, why didn’t you say so?” your mother asks, the name bringing a chill over you; though her face is washed with concern, you still catch something buried deep within her gaze— that familiar sternness, a feeling of humiliation she could never hide from you; the gentleness of her smile feels just as strained as the rest of her. 

“You shouldn’t have let me serve you if you knew it would go to waste,” she reasons; the silence that takes over is swift and painful— the heavy feeling of mortification that drops on you renders you silent.

“It’s no big deal,” Yeonjun suddenly chimes in, reaching over for your plate; you can only sit there in silence as he drags it away from you and towards himself, the sweet smile he sports enough to pacify your mother, “I can finish it for her— I was going to ask for seconds anyway.”

“Oh, Yeonjun,” your mother fawns, face alight with joy like a switch flipped inside her, “you’re too kind— you don’t have to force yourself to cover for her mistakes.”

Yeonjun laughs, the sound making your stomach twist with unease. “No really, it’s alright. It’d be a shame to leave this untouched.”

“Awh,” your mother coos, placing a hand over her heart in gratitude— she glances over at you to make sure you show the same appreciation, “He’s so sweet, isn’t he ___?”

“Yeah,” you say blankly, ignoring the way Yeonjun’s gaze lingers on you for a moment too long. You’ve begun to drown out their painfully saccharine exchange; all you can do is stare at the empty table in front of you, knowing that if you dismissed yourself early, your mother wouldn’t let you hear the end of it.

The atmosphere lightens up in no time; Yeonjun and your mother have clicked perfectly, talking and laughing like they’ve known each other their whole lives— Seojun is positively beaming from the exchange. 

Across from you, Taehyun remains silent— not a word spoken all of dinner, except to compliment your mother’s cooking; he doesn’t bother to join into whatever engaging conversation the other three seem to be having, but he listens intently and laughs along nonetheless. For the first time in years, the picture-perfect family is seated before you. 

A feeling of discomfort sits atop your stomach the whole night.

3tan12 is currently 10k and will end up around 15-17k, making both a whopping 34-35k total😭 hence the need for more time to really make sure each part is done the best way possible!

hello welcommme to my lecture on comedy musician tom cardy #mylecture. topic: his art is like if the twilight zone and vine fucked nasty, because its all based in a surreal multiverse. credentials: i listened to 17k minutes of tom cardy the year i discovered his music, i was a top .005% listener on spotify, so yeah, hah, humblebrag. so heres this thing about comedy musician tom cardy and the multiverse

ok the music videos he does himself are extremely low budget because for a long time they were all filmed in the same studio, the camera was in the same spot, and he wasnt even really wearing many specific costumes in most of his earlier stuff besides two that i can think of: naughty or nice, about anti-union santa claus. in that one he shaved his mustache to play an aggrieved elf that santa has personal beef with because he started a union with the other elves. tbh its hard to tell its the same guy playing both characters. and also the ballad of smokin joe rudeboy which is about a cowboy with a tragic backstory who flips people the bird instead of using guns and keeps winning. incredible, no notes. MY THEORY: these characters are part of the same universe of multiverses that are tangential to ours because theyre moderately grounded in reality enough that the slightly unrealistic to the very unrealistic doesnt seem like too much of a stretch. here watch them theyre so fucking funny

BUT VERY IMPORTANTLY: many many songs contain eldritch-alien-god horrorcomedybeings beyond comprehension. sometimes HE is the eldritch-alien-god being. which i am obviously going to love thats so fun.

AND THEN: he came out with the song transcendental cha cha cha and i was like ohhh right right right ok so this is the foundational Lore, all his music takes place in the same fantastical surreal liminal unplace/not-time. all these characters and concepts and alternate versions of himself are ALL TRUE. just not Here-here.

transcendental cha cha cha is so fucking good its actually crazy. the music video is beautiful this song is insane. if i ever go back to dance at a club i am requesting this

just being silly in ur ask box bc I didn't wanna add onto the original post. I have been a low word count kinda guy. usually in the 2-4k range. my longest posted is just over 5k words. and for my big bang fic, what I wanted to reach the word minimum of 5k words. that's all I wanted. if I went over, that would be great.

well. I'm at 17k and still have a long scene to finish. so I'm just sitting here like. huh. cool. so I might hit 20k. four times longer than my current longest fic. and I wasn't even attempting to do that. it just happened naturally while writing the story I wanted to the world. huh.

YEAH!!!! Thats exactly how it happens. I’m calling it man, from here on out youll only be able to write 10-15k stuff, if not longer :>

So it turns out trying to calculate how many words equal 75 pages is really difficult bc when I copypasted all the text I have for Blue Bones currently, it only made it to 47 pages (roughly 17K words). But when I did a test with lorem ipsum, I got it to 75 pages with roughly 12K words (with its benefit being a blank page per chapter).

I think what I'm going to aim for is 10 chapters (my current perception of how long this book will be is 9 chapters and I want it to be a nice round number if it's THAT close to 10 lmao), which could equal 12-15K words. Then, you have 10 extra pages bc I want to do an illustration for each chapter.

So uh, I have no idea how to work this out in my head so I'm just gonna hope and pray it reaches 75 pages when I'm done lmao.

Three changes. by orange_crushed - 18k M for someone who reads so much angst i could choke on it, i love to recover with distilled tenderness, no hurt all yearning etc. and this is the blossoming of summer love cql-lecture-arc the boys deserved. peak comfort fic mentally i am in that lake scene. young terrified-of-love LWJ my beloved!!

Say So by @lanwangjigrumpyfacecollection - 15k E feat. a sex-cursed WWX incapable of playing it cool. LWJ is not not pleased. more importantly who is doing it like feelsforbreakfast. who!!! u know i had zero intention of getting into the untamed even tho it ruled my dash for 2 years and yet the moment ffb wrote a fic? im there. say less. say nothing at all. ur always in for a tender funny horny time. it’s hot it’s hilarious it’s abt the mortifying ordeal of voicing what one wants. 10/10 re-readability.

Pentimento. by orange_crushed - 73k E [Former best friends Lan Wangji, paintings conservator, and Wei Wuxian, art handler, meet again and realize... neither of them were actually in unrequited love.] immaculate setting, i read it for that reason alone. loved LWJ’s pov in this—reserved, self-conscious, observant, sad, suffocating with unspoken desires etc. but it’s the final paragraphs of the last chapter that got me. thee loveliest surprise and such a satisfying close to the story.

A Very Star-Like Start by hansbekhart - 3k E short lovely soft perfect. the extended cql wangxian lotus lake boat scene we deserved.

All that is solid melts into air by huxiyi - 18k T was absolutely taken with the premise of this fic bc 1) i love angst 2) i love seeing a bitter/sad/angry wangxian in their older age making amends 3) i love thinking about the class dynamics in CQL, WWX’s robin-hood streak, all the villains having origin stories that amount to a lack of status, and the breakdown of relationships because of these dynamics. everything is a sad mess but it will be ok!

No night as deep as my night. by orange_crushed - 17k E another orange_crushed bc well. if u find a good author it makes sense to work thru all their fics. anyway this one is a post-nightless city au. wwx on the verge of death. lwj desperate to save him. equal parts dark and lovely. idk how to explain it but i feel like orange_crushed excels at using a fic setting to build emotional landscapes that completely expand ur understanding of a character. this one in particular feels like a love letter to the burial mounds, homes made out of dead things, personified darkness, etc.

Only sometimes do they ask of him to just sit on their lap but event hen he has to move in some way and not just sit still.

Jungkook spreads his legs slightly and motions to his lap as if it’s the best seat that has ever been offered to Jimin. “Be my guest.”

so i don’t really know what to say here but i loved their dynamic in this fic?? i love the way JK treats JM in this ahhhh its SMUTTY AF but he still super sweet and protective.  There’s sooooome angst but it’s not too bad. Good plot.

Sunday Snippets, Oct 22, 2017

This week was again very productive, around 5k written and a whole bunch of editing. Next week might be a different story, I’m shopping for a new laptop bc the current one is kind of dying, so if I get to the point of actually buying one, setting it up will take a chunk of my writing time.

This week I posted Recrossing Tracks, it’s a post CATWS canon divergence AU. Despite its length of over 20k, it actually came together very organically, which was very satisfying.

Over the past few months I’ve tended to have around three projects active any given time, everything else is inactive (for reference, I’ve currently got six WIPs and seven somewhat fleshed out ideas on top of those). I count the two fics of Entire History of Human Desire as one project that’s obviously ongoing, then I usually work on one of my longer fics, and one shorter one.

This week I finished the November chapter of Forget the Dragon, which means EHOHD verse is again resting until I need to polish them for posting. As I mentioned last week, we’re coming up to a turning point in the story, I’m pretty excited about that.

The currently active long fic is Wrap Me Up in Dreams, the fairy tale AU that’ll be posted as my twelve days of Christmas fic. I wrote a bit for it this week, and I definitely need to get a move on with it, because I’ve got ways to go yet. I’ve got four and half chapters out of twelve, about 17k in total written so far, and I’d like to have the first draft ready by the beginning of December, so that the editing won’t have to be rushed.

Luckily all my one-shot ideas currently need to percolate a bit more in my head, none of them is demanding to be written, so hopefully at least for the next few weeks I’ll have only two active projects.

lymond is one of those series that I love dearly but would never dare write fic for because the amount of classical referencing in it is insane, so how oliviacirce managed to craft something so true to lymond while being only 2588 words long (!?!?!?!?!) is absolutely inspiring.

a translation of 野火与荒原 that gave me lots and lots and lots of feelings about tang hao and also converted me onto the tang hao is confused about his feelings re: zhang jiale ship. there is so much baggage on that ship, it’s delightful

11. a fic you wish could be a movie

giants of the earth by @hopefics​ and thefractured, transformers, no pairings, 200k, gen

while I don’t trust movies to do anything with emotions I think a movie version of this fic would be enormously entertaining! it’s got I think just the right balance of talking and introspection and action to be reflected more faithfully than most fics on the silver screen. if anything the explosions alone in the end would be a delight to watch. (and plus, it would be very michael bay-esque, wouldn’t it?)
