🦑 Will You Snail? 2022 Art Dump 2 [ first - next ]

continuing the new series with animations from 2022! i discovered wys the same year it came out (2022) and it had a very big effect on me and my awesome school friendgroup. we all started hyperfixating on what i discovered and it was so neat ^_^

the first two here are wips that never saw the light of day, but their full length w/ audio will be featured in upcoming animation compilation vid of mine! i’ll link it here when it happens B]

Yiren Disco 2025 Day 5

Blade-wielder – Who is your favorite “behind the scenes” person (writers, directors, animators, VAs, actors, etc)? 

I’m sorry, but I’m going to be a bit of a rebel for this one because I can’t just pick who is my favorite hahahuhu

Production is an ecosystem of all the creatives, the cast and crew banding together to make such a beautiful piece of art. I don’t want to think about whose work has more value than whose. (this is a me problem because I have a weird way of assigning favorites hahahuhu it's the asian kid trauma)

So, today, I’m not going to answer the posed question. Rather, I will tell you about one of my favorite scenes that clearly showcases the artistic touches of the talented team. 

This… Is… A choice. A choice that a C-Drama cast and crew have made and somehow got greenlit.  

This is a writing choice—the OG scene didn’t involve a half-naked Wang Ye parading around someone who he just met. This is a framing and directing choice—they didn’t have to make it look like Zhuge Qing was eye-fucking Wang Ye. This is an acting choice—both actors shouldn’t have this much tension like?????? 

I love it. 10/10 stars.

ngl rick springfield is really good at writing somgs about abusive relationships. Broke house has the whole "he was kind at first, refuge from her crazy father. Now she can't tell what's worse, ravaged wife or ravaged daughter" thing like. I'm too high to explain. Guess it's like i like seeing the acknowledgement that having an abusive father fucked the wife up and made her more vulnerable to someone manipulative who love bombed her. Like theres a lot of backstory there considering this is a 2 minute pop song

And IN veRonIcA's HEAD (thats the official way rick springfield writes it with those weird caps idk man)

And an act of independence, a small victory

She'd wake up angry, but turned on like a light

She turns around, he's there, confusing her with his promises and crying on the telephone

She twists and she turns in circles

With all of her strength, she breaks free

She stumbles and she nearly falls

But in Veronica's head, the wheels were burning

Turning out of frustration

Veronica said she would never be the same

like he really gets how hard it is to leave and how easy it is to want to go back to someone toxic that hurt you but part of your brain just doesn't care about what they did

I think overall I'd rank IN veRonIcA's HEAD above Broke House because Broke House is more fucked up and there's nothing hopeful there. It's not about leaving, it's just an abusive marriage. Whereas Veronica actually does leave the abusive husband at the start of the somg and the rest of it is her processing and wanting him back and him trying to get her back but she finds the strength to resist

Yet the two of us became friends who do confide in each other. I feel like this type of brotherly affection is quite difficult to come by.

In shows such as this, they play a very important part.

you make plans with your friends when youre growing up that you'll move in togehter and always stay near and go to each other's weddings and always talk and always call and then you get to the age you're supposed to start doing that kind of thing and realize all the friends you had hoped would stay by you forever have gone off to do things without you and you're just in the same spot and suddenly you have to do it all on your own

my favorite things. ever. are simple phrases that, under the tremendous context one is already acquainted with, pack a punch. a moral or lesson learned, a metaphor to apply to everything you’ve gathered, or even something familiar. it brings a sense of finality. and it hits especially hard with either the power or peaceful nature it is delivered. it’s amazing to me how a simple construction of words can give one goosebumps. frisson.

such examples (imo) include “this place is not a place of honor” from the Transuranic (radioactive) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant message, “no day shall erase you from the memory of time” by Virgil for the 9/11 museum, “cogito ergo sum” by AM from IHNMAIMS, “maybe a fox” from Maybe a Fox by Kathi Appelt and Alison McGhee, “i placed my fate into the hands of random gods, and now i must endure it to the end” and “i struggle to accept being a bug” from Rainworld, and many many more.

I didn’t know Will You Snail? by Jonas Tyroller had a message like this, even after my 8+ playthroughs. i replayed it again today after 3 years since my initial hyperfixation in 2022 and can only describe what i feel as shock and awe. this phrase, when applied to everything you learn about the game, translates perfectly.
