Calling all betas and cheerleaders!

Our writers for the 2024 HanLeia Holiday Exchange are working away at their gifts for one another — and we could use your help! We’re a little less than a month away from our January 18 deadline, and as we get closer writers will be needing some help in the following areas:

Beta reading - proofreading: checking grammar, spelling, word usage, or typos before a fic is posted

Beta reading - characterization, plot, or flow: a little more in-depth read and questions on more structural issues with the fic (“does this part ring true to this character to you?” could be a question a writer might ask, for instance)

Cheerleading / sounding board: Helping a writer when they’re having trouble getting started, when they got started but are feeling a bit stuck, or are feeling challenged to get across the finish line. This could just be encouragement and checking in regularly, or it could be offering a sounding board to think through ideas or get suggestions.

We welcome your help regardless of whether you’re writing for the exchange or not. And if you’re concerned about having enough time, not to worry; we’ll check in with you before we match you with a writer in need to make sure you still have time and capacity to do it.

How to be beta reader

Hey anonamantha!

As far as I am aware (in my personal non-OTW!Vol experience), becoming a beta reader is mostly about finding the right author and the right story at the right time. Someone, somewhere, is writing a story and wishing they had a beta reader.

Hello everyone!! For the better part of the last year, I've been incredibly honored to be a part of the 2024 Professor Layton Big Bang! (@proflaytonbigbang)

It's been a wonderfully fun 10 months since I started writing for this endeavor, and today I've been extremely excited all around to share my fic, Professor Layton and the Past Rewritten! I got to partner up with two amazing artists, those being @samthecookielord and Naiah, who created some awesome chapter spotlights (and a few doodles, hehe). Luke can’t see very well with the relative darkness in the room, but that voice makes his face scrunch. Comically, it soothes the pitter-patter in his chest with how out of the situation he’s suddenly thrown. That’s not the voice of Hershel Layton, to be sure. It almost sounds like… “.... Dad?” The man stops his twisting and turning to make a horribly familiar half-choked gagging sound. The lights finally click on, illuminating their room in what should be a comforting yellow glow. Instead, it gives light to a contorted face that makes the both of them gasp. Or: The actual unwound, lost future fic.

Beta reading - Help with knowledge of Star Wars Legends events, characters, or details

Call For Betas

As we enter the final stages of the creating period of the 2024 Marvey Bang, here's a call for betas!

If you'd be willing to be a beta reader, please send us an email marveybang(at)gmail.com or an ask to this tumblr and state what kind of beta services you'd be willing and able to offer, for example:

general beta-reading for consistency, continuity, characterisations, plot holes, inaccuracies etc.

general beta-reading for "style and flow"

SPAG (spelling and grammar)

"special interest beta-reading" (aka is there an area of expertise you can offer input or fact-checking for)

beta viewer for the created fanart

etc.

Please also state how long the fic you're willing to beta may be.

Remember: Posting starts September, 6th, and by then all the fanwork needs to be ready for posting.

We will make an extra post for the writers and artists after this to point them here and to let them know that they can hit us up if they're in need or search for a beta reader or beta viewer.
