Overwatch Design: Hazard
It's been a while.
Now that the 6v6 test is slowly winding down (a month and a bit of solid testing and queue times is more than I expected to get in, honestly) and the Dev team is looking toward the next iterations (Moth Meta Classic and Min 1/Max 3, both of which are going to be less ideal versions of the format), I thought it prudent to go into another deep dive about the most recent hero release, and lemme just say-
Tumblr media
This fuckin' guy.
There is a lot to like about Hazard; predictable mobility (A Winston jump + fair Doomfist rocket punch) , limited kit application (Bone Spurs + Not-ridiculous Dmg Reduction), space making (all of the above) and with some quirky weaknesses (Wall climb's odd slow down at the tail end is perfect for sleeps/knifes/walling). Overall, a really strong foundation with few/fixable adjustment zones.
And then there's the God. Damn. Wall.
Look, I enjoy Tank. It's been my main since jump, back when I mistakenly thought Mei's Wall was as good as a barrier and kept blocking my team off from being killed and allowingtheenemytohealbehindmywallandcontesttheobjectiveforfree-
(I was a Reinhardt main and didn't know it yet)
So it stands to reason I'm going to be a bit more harsh about my Tank critiques in design. Albeit, the recent slew of Tank releases has also been a bit concerning across the board, but that's another discussion- especially given most of Hazard's kit is very solid with plenty of potential.
But I cannot stress enough how bad it is to provide a front line presence, who is going to be spending the majority of their time not glancing back at their teammates to see what they are doing?
A totem mechanic with collision.
There is a very very very good reason why Mei is not a Tank.
Because if you thought getting walled off from shooting the enemy was bad, having your sightline artificially blocked so you can't heal, help, move, or adjust due to the same is worse. Significantly more so when it's your own teammate (even if unintentionally 99% of the time) doing it.
Where you go, I can't follow
"Drop the Wall!"
Tumblr media
Totems are mechanics that can be deployed to produce various effects in the game. Some examples:
Baptiste's Immortality Field
Illari's Pylon
Soldier's Biotic Field (technically)
Symmetra's Teleporter/Turrets
Barriers
Most of these function quite well, with some allowing for destruction, and thus, interactivity between heroes. Totems play an important role in design, allowing for the detachment of some of a Hero's kit potential, into a separate component; an avatar representative of some of their potency, at the cost of a more simplified (and counterable) interaction or-
Totems can be destroyed, blocked, avoided, or misplaced depending heavily on player interaction and input
But when a Totem possesses collision, the stakes increase to a rather significant degree; there is no longer room for error, as the totem's very existence represents both resistance and obstacle to everyone in the match.
This isn't to say Collision Totems can't be done well?
Mei's Ice Block, for instance, is a fairly balanced and well executed example. The context here is that Mei converts herself into the Totem, removing the potential for the rest of her kit in favour of achieving a more resilient state. That transformation comes at such a significant cost, that the scenarios in which it is useful are isolated, even niche. This gives the ability Texture in a way many other mechanics in the game can't hope to achieve.
And Mei's Ice Block can still severely hamper her own teammates.
Collision Totems need to be handled carefully and the why of it all comes down to a sticky topic where Player Input (or Skill if you want the gameplay translation) is concerned: Precision.
A player's ability to be precise is a huge measure of Player Input, allowing for fantastic gameplay moments, highlights, and unmistakable expressions anyone can recognize-
-but when mechanics like Collision Totems are highly dependent on precision to achieve even nominal success?
You've gone and created a situation in which even just learning the hero, is going to frustrate players. Learning is, by nature, imprecise and the road to minimizing how detrimental your gameplay is on your teammates is going to build an unnecessary level of frustration onto the hero.
There's a reason people referred to Mei as Satan in Overwatch 1.
Broad MMR is filled with people learning; not just the hero they are playing, but heroes they are playing against, and with as well. To climb in ranks, MMR, or just Player Input, you will make a lot of mistakes.
In a game like Overwatch, with a boatload of variance at every level, that learning could take (has taken for many of us) years.
Hazard's Wall represents, not just a Collision Totem, in the same sense as Mei's own Ice Wall, but a super-amped up version of it that multiplies the frustration for all.
I really hate that Mole Hill
Tumblr media
It isn't as big as Mei Wall. It isn't as imposing as Mei Wall. It isn't as confusing as Mei Wall (multiple pillars each with their own health pools but no distinct visual effect to represent this before being damaged)-
-but hooooo boy howdy does it do a lot more than Mei Wall ever could!
Persistant knockback on contact
Burst Damage on contact
Anti Mobility on contact (no wall climb)
Omni-placement (not land-locked)
And that's in addition to the standard blockading effects of a Mei Wall. As a Totem, Jagged Wall provides far more impact when on the battlefield against enemies, to the point it can be considered as useful and engaging as a Torb turret, which is to say-
Jagged Wall's effects are broad enough in application that it must be considered in every teamfight at the same level of detriment as powerfully automated totems like Immortality Field and Turrets
Trying to operate outside of that paradigm, makes it very difficult to navigate a teamfight (especially from a Divey Tank with mobility to boot) given it can appear very suddenly to ruin plans, engagements, and retreats.
But that...was sort of the design goal. It's frustrating playing Tank and having an inanimate object counter large portions of your kit, but we've got experience with that. It's a familiar frustration at least.
It's when the Hazard is out ahead or mixing it up with the enemy (as one does when Tanking) and you are attempting any of the following as his teammate:
Healing (him or your fellow teammates diving with him)
Supporting (discords, immo fields, suzus, life grips, etc.)
Tanking (6v6 format makes duo with him a significant gamble)
Finishing off low enemies
Sniping
Trying to navigate narrow corridors or tight confines
Free movement/Mobility in a teamfight
That "appear very suddenly to ruin plans, engagements, and retreats" becomes an unacceptable level of frustration in the design.
A Collision Totem appears, decreeing that the engagement has now changed and/or ended, not because the Hazard was purposefully trying to end it, but because the Wall appeared and blocked off LoS for any number of the possibilities listed above.
Wall takes the agency of your teammates and puts it as a secondary priority to a Tank who cannot afford to look around and take into account the dozens of ways in which his teammates might be trying to leverage their own mechanics, kits, and Roles, to achieve success.
A Hazard is more likely (and well within expectation) to Wall himself off from an enemy trying to kill him when he's low, than rely on the healing from his teammates. It just so happens to, inadvertently, interfere with many of the other possible plans his teammates might have had for engagement purposes.
And, to reiterate, this is less of a problem (but still one) the higher in 'Skill' or Rank one gets, but learning takes time and mistakes happen while you learn, which is a far far closer experience to the vast majority of the Overwatch Playerbase. The fact it's going to cost your teammates their own opportunities too is what makes it bad design.
So what can be done?
Honestly, removing the Wall entirely could yield some really positive results.
I know it's a unique mechanic for the Tank Role (even if not for the game itself), but the isolated potential wrapped up in that Totem could be repurposed towards large portions of his kit, expanding both his mobility, engagement potential, and Texture to make him an ideal Tank.
Without Wall, there's room to increase Violent Leap's versatility, both in the initial Leap as well as the Slash (both of which are separate activations). Increasing his ability to change directions or linger in the air between the two stages of the ability, could significantly refine his engagement potential, while allowing for a stronger knockback the longer he lingers between each stage (and maintaining the counter element of it) or activating Spike Guard briefly to absorb enemy CDs/Burst hits before the slash.
His Wall Climb as well, would benefit from a versatility and potency boost; losing the wall means losing the awkward use of climbing it to reach higher ground...which feels like a waste of the ability where other Tanks with similar mobility can achieve most high grounds just fine off a single CD.
Allowing him to perch on vertical surfaces, or gain further height at the cost of climbing slower, or even resetting the first stage of his Violent Leap at the apex of the climb would all be beneficial to his gameplay.
Give his Spike Guard knockback, for isolation and space-making potential. Heck, allow Spike Guard to add temporary increased Knockback for up to 2s if it damages an enemy.
Give his Ultimate a little extra root time.
Allow Bonespurs to persist on the field for upto 1-2s (this....might be too much for the engine to take, but the idea is still solid theory).
All of it is plausible and clarifies his uniqueness as a Tank-
-if you just. Get Rid. Of the Damned. Wall.
Overall, it's superfluous to the rest of his kit, with very little kit cohesion and can be removed without impacting the rest of his gameplay much at all. It's a bit of bloat that is very easily snipped off in favour of cleaner, adjustable changes that make his gameplay more unique.
And you also get rid of the overly frustrating elements that were never meant to go on a Tank to begin with.

If she's in the queue disregard this but since I just finished a playthrough of the game she's in and saw this blog I just had to suggest her (pretty sure since glados was on here video game characters are allowed) Anyway
Nyreen Kandros - Mass Effect 3
Propaganda -
- beautiful eyes
- beautiful voice
- spiky
- has biotic abilities (spiky AND can do space magic? hello?)
- steadfast, protective leader who sticks by the people she cares about even when the situation gets real messed up - stays composed and ultimately doesn't let herself be changed for the worse in a world of negative influences, committed to making a positive impact even in a place where that's seemingly impossible
- hardly the only character this applies to but knows how to make a dramatic entrance
- looks amazing in red and black
- spiky

I've had this in my wips for months at this point.. but I just can't finish it yet for some reason. Anyway.. here's the first 1/3 of a cute little story?
Cora had to remind herself not to panic as she woke to the bitter, frigid, morning clawing its way into Techiix. She fought to ground herself as she gained consciousness, focusing on the gnawing cold of the humid air settled deep within her bones to keep herself in the physical, keep her biotics from lashing out at Orev.
As if on queue, Orev woke to wrap the blankets back around them and pull her close to him. Without even opening his eyes at first, he reached for the nearest small, solid object to throw at the solar lamp switch, and brought it to life.
"Don't break it!" Cora hissed playfully, turning to nestle deeper into Orev's arms.
"I never miss," Orev reminded, with a tone somewhat too sultry for the occasion, and followed the declaration up with several kisses.
Cora couldn't help but giggle.
"Now, you want to tell me why you always wake up in a panic? I haven't let you freeze yet."
Cora groaned. She hated getting personal before coffee, but she knew Orev would never relent without an actual explanation. "I grew up on frigates… If you wake up cold in space, you have a problem to solve and a time limit."
Orev let out low grunt of understanding before gently kissing the top of her head. "I'll see if I can put a cycler on the solar lamp without taxing the energy reserves." He ran his fingers along her waist before wrapping his arms fully around her as if trying to pull her closer than reality would allow. "Thank you for staying anyway."
She blushed as she melted into another kiss. "You're worth it," she answered, forcing her voice into a whisper so that it wouldn't come out with a nervous squeak. As capable and strong as she was in the field, Orev always made her feel small, and dainty, and nervous.

Day 6: Dosa and STDs
The title will make sense, trust me. We went to the hospital again like the 5 days before but with two members down. This time to dive deeper into specific processes. There was a crowd gathered outside the entrance and randomly this dude set a bowl on fire! what?! We then realised this was a fire drill and all the support staff were present. The instructor set a bowl on fire and brought an extinguisher and doused it. It was fun to watch.
OK, play time over. We set out to work. Srika went to the ENT department, Sia went to gynac and Sid and Arpita went to the billing department.
Looking into the OPDs
Sia witnessed drama at the gynac department. The MS and the head of gynaecology were fighting. Sia left and went to the paediatric department. Srika looked at the ENT in great detail and noted down the process for start to finish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Billing
Sid and Arpita went to billing and interviewed the receptionists. The receptionists explained the system of billing- how 3 slips are made- pink one for the patient, yellow for the department and white for their own records. They also complained about how much they hated the system.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pharmacy
At the pharmacy, Sid and Arpita went in just to sit silently and observe. But a woman started chatting with them. She asked them about design, and they in turn asked them about the pharmacy. She wanted us to design uniform for them! The woman explained all the places where they have to enter data. Meanwhile, two other women were distributing medicines to the patients. It was fun to observe what they were doing.
Tumblr media
Dosa
We were starving and decided to eat at Kessel Mall. Halfway in, we changed the plan and went to Brahma Sarovar for dosa. We reached the place and some of the members were trying out podi dosa for the first time. Then we left. Halfway in, (again) Sid realised he left his umbrella at the restaurant. WE WENT BACK TO RETRIEVE IT.
Role play
Finally, we reached the hospital and there wasn’t much time left so we quickly did the roleplay. Sid went through the entire process and ended up waiting to enter the panchkarma. He slept. Suddenly, his name was called and he rushed to enter. The experience was below par (according to him). He was called to a separate room and grilled about personal matters before just declaring its an STD despite multiple attempts to convince the doctor it was a skin issue he had since he was a child. What?! In the end, he got a prescription for anti biotics which weren’t available in the pharmacy and he was told to get it from an external pharmacy down the road. We then went back to campus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 1- Registration of patient
Tumblr media
Step 2- Initial examination by intern (she takes BP and asks questions about sleep, hunger, and bowel)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 3- Waiting for name to be called by attendant (It took an hour so Sid slept)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 4- More waiting in the queue to go to the doctor's room
Inside the room: MORE WAITING. Then you talk to a junior doctor who asks more specific questions about the ailment. Then you meet the main doctor, and even he examines. Then he told the attendant to take Sid to a separate room where he was asked more questions about history and general habits. Then, Sid was escorted into the main room and talked to the doctor. Sid was informed it was a viral infection. After, the doctor proceeded to ask questions about NID, Design and his home city. The doctor then prescribed a bunch of medication. Sid was informed by the attendant that this medicine won't be available in the in house pharmacy and told him to get it from an external medicine provider. (Contact details were provided.)

Tag Game: Post the last sentence you wrote and tag as many people as there are words
I was tagged by @emsondraeling but I’m making a new post because it was getting lengthy.
The implant nestled at the base of Jame's skull is still humming with energy from the fight, biotic energy lacing between her fingers as she flexes her hands.
I’m writing a Mass Effect AU of the Kencyrath, okay, leave me alone.
For a less obscure cast of characters and a much more obscure setting, here is the latest line of my Indexing AU of Vox Machina:
As it stood, they were a Hansel, a Gretel, a Thousandfurs, a Boy Without Fear, and a Pied Piper, driving down the highway eighteen miles over the legal limit with no specific destination in mind, and Vax had decided to add to the chaos by flicking through radio channels at random.
I don’t know anywhere near that many people who write, sooooo @aethersea, @cthulhu-with-a-fez, @viciousmaukeries, @executeness, @editoress, and idk @maelace.  If I tagged anyone who doesn’t write, I’m SO sorry, and to everyone I doubtless missed, please consider yourself tagged anyway, my brain is not working today.

Arisa Shepard - Ending the War
Even as I sit here teary-eyed, and yes I forgot to get a screen of that specific final shot, I did GET that scene - which means my Shepard, at least, is alive. Hence Garrus’ little smirk at the end there.
The scene when you chose the Destroy ending killed me - because she starts off still stumbling and then just gains strength from her memories, from the thought of her loved ones, from the people she needs to save - she’s lost enough and she refuses to lose more, even if it costs her own life.
Again, in my canon at least, Shepard lives. I had high enough EMS that Earth didn’t take any extra damage, everyone on the Normandy is okay... the only real casualty at the end is poor Anderson. (EDI’s alive dammit, maybe the mobile body got destroyed but she’s alive)

I was able to snag another amazing commission by @rosenkow! Thank you so much for bringing my Cinnamon Bun Alexandra Destiny Hope Shepard to life! You are phenomenal! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Tumblr media
Name: Alexandra Destiny Hope Shepard
DOB: April 15, 2188. Nine Months Post-Reaper War
POB: Normandy SR-2
Specialization: Vanguard, N7
Psych: Spacer, Paragon
Sexuality: Bisexual
Love Interest: (OC) Jason Argyle
Facts About Alexandra:
She was born on April 15, 2188 to Commander John Shepard and Lieutenant-Commander Ashley Williams on the Normandy SR2.
Growing up, her time was divided between residing on the Normandy and the Citadel. Commander Shepard had retaking command of the Normandy upon recovering from his extensive injury during the last push of London. There, she was homeschooled along with her little brother, Kaidan -named after Kaidan Alenko-.
At age 13, Alexandra's biotics manifestated. She was then registered at Grissom Academy where she under took tutelage from Jack and Miranda.
She joined the biotiball team and eventually became team captain for she demonstrated strong leadership skills.
She graduated from Grissom Academy a year early, age 17. Having lived most of her life between the Normandy, the Citadel, and Grissom Academy, she grew to have a strong fascination with engines and signed up to study engineering. Once she turned 18, she signed up to join the Alliance, following in her parents footsteps, and still managed to finish her studies in engineering and graduating with honors. However, she did decide to specialize in the vanguard class for her powerful biotics are very useful in fight, and she will admit to loving to display them ❤.
Read about her on AO3

I recently commissioned @bbegrill to create this lovely piece of Commander Leah Shepard and her lovely partner Kaidan Alenko. It's absolutely heartfelt and full emotions. Seeing Thessia fall reminded Leah too much of her home on Mindoir when it was raided and seeing her friend, Liara, suffer really breaks Leah, a rare sight to see from The Butcher of Torfan. Luckily, Kaidan is around to give her a shoulder to lean on and the support she needs to overcome this.
Thank you so much Lana for an amazing piece!!!

Isaac had been enlisted for as long as he had ever been a civilian. He had been enlisted as long as some of the soldiers he worked with had been alive.
The Systems Alliance had become the framework for his life and that had been good enough for a very long time. So the realization that his desire for profound connection had outgrown his desire to remain comfortable, content, and apparently appropriate, was a little sobering.
He woke to the sound of Eva gasping in her sleep. He waited, still and listening for her breaths. He watched her posture soften, the tension in her lithe body draining as quickly as it had appeared.
The Fury needed her rest, as disruptive as it could be. Isaac didn't pretend to understand what it was like to be a human biotic, much less one as powerful as Eva. Mostly he just thought it looked like a lot of work, having to corral and contain the energy inside of her all of the time.
Isaac, was a middle aged soldier. He slept easily and often - never deeply or, really, for very long. It hurt to know she saw herself as the problem when she was the only peace he'd known.
He lingered long enough to burn the memory of her shape and her smell into his mind before he got up, pulling on his loose shorts to slump down at his terminal. He set the lights to dim as the inbox lit up his face.
{To: Cpt. Cerrillo, I. From: Mj. Townsend, M. - The only word is no word. Sorry mate. We'll keep looking.}
Isaac devoted an impressive amount of willpower to compartmentalization. In this case, he filed the news - or lack of - into his Mom box with a final sigh that was as much as he would indulge in.
His critical father, though dead for decades, still lived in Isaac's head every time doubt wormed its way to his otherwise steady surface. He thought of how small his problems were. Even if the worst case was true, he still had it a lot better than most, the voice reminded him.
He considered closing the terminal to crawl back into bed, but ended up clearing his inbox, sorting the files and information to add to his queue for the morning shift that would come too soon.
Until recently, he thought as he pointedly didn't look at the sleeping form of the naked special forces operative in his bed, no one had ever had a reason to call Isaac Cerrillo unreliable, unfocused, or unprofessional in any way.
Now? He felt confident that wartime would slow the judicial process of his dishonorable expulsion from the only life he'd ever known. And he was thankful that there were a lot of ways to die and/or do some good between now and then.

check in tag
I got tagged by: @johnnysilvercock (thank you :D)
why did you choose your url? I was - at the time - into Downton Abbey (I’m generally quite fond of period dramas), and the ‘downstairs people’ would often say “my lord-/ladyship”. I added nerdy to it, so there you go. A really dumb url. :’) I’ve been tempted to change it, but I also can’t bother.
any side blogs? if you have them, name them and why you have them. Nope; I stuff everything into one.
how long have you been on tumblr? Long enough.
do you have a queue tag? Nope (I discovered embarrassingly late that you can queue stuff I guess? I honestly can’t bother. You either find a billion posts by me within the span of an hour, or don’t see anything for a few days.)
why did you start your blog in the first place? Someone kept insisting I’d get one. So I did. This place is a hell hole treasure trove of random sh*t.
why did you choose your icon / pfp? It’s my Corpo V (or main V), and I’m quite fond of him.
why did you choose your header? Because it’s the LEGENDARY KERRY EURODYNE.. I mean.. a random stranger who’s definitely NOT Kerry.
what’s your post with the most notes? Technically speaking, it’s @mdmtwnk ‘s art (the commission), but I can’t really take credit for that. (check out her art!! it’s amazing) Aside from that, I think Kaidan Alenko with his biotic glow.
how many mutuals do you have? no clue lol
how many followers do you have? 145.
how many people do you follow? 237.
have you ever made a shitpost? Probably.. some of my Cyberpunk posts def are. -looks vaguely in the direction of the Nailed It Cyberpunk post-
how often do you use tumblr each day? Depends on the day, and my mood.
did you have a fight / argument with another blog once? who won? Nope... I’m not on here to argue with others.
how do you feel about ‘you need to reblog this’ posts? It’s annoying.
do you like tag games? yes.
do you like ask games? yes, but I don’t do them? I don’t think anyone’d really be interested :’D
which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous? all are legendary.
do you have a crush on a mutual? nah
tags? If you want to do this, then considered yourself tagged. :)

Just saw a post about how if Sesame Street was a thing in the ME universe, Shepard would guest star on it and teach something to a young audience, so I have to ask - if Sam agreed to do it, what would he teach?? 🤩
I saw that SAME POST and it is already in my queue with a tag novel, but since you asked so nicely. :D
He would absolutely agree to it - kids love him, and he's pretty good with them.
He'd teach about biotics. Examples might include:
Explaining amps to Elmo, and taking his out to show it to him and demonstrate that taking it out and putting it in don't hurt.
Chatting with Cookie Monster about how biotics need more calories.
"Biotics need MOAR cookies?"
"Yes, Cookie Monster, biotics need moar cookies."
Showing Big Bird how mnemonics work, and doing a little telekinetic demonstration, maybe on Snuffleupagus.
(Kaidan may wind up being behind the scenes as the person actually in control of the demonstration, because the first practice session had a little more umph than the crew at 123 Sesame Street were anticipating - this is Sam, after all)
Having a heart to heart with Oscar the Grouch about how some people are mean to biotics just because they're biotics, and that makes him sad, and he wish people wouldn't do that, because it can mean biotics are extremely lonely.
"I'd love it if people left me alone."
"I bet even Grouches sometimes need a friend. Would you like to meet my good friend Kaidan? He's a biotic and he's very nice. He helped me save the whole galaxy once."
Maybe sing a song about biotics with Kermit. "It ain't easy being blue."
Liara is not terribly amused by that last bit.
