Or: I am asking every business journalist to take one (1) gender studies class before I tear my hair out.

This interview came across my dash and it's a lot of fun, particularly Apo's "dad joke" actually being a hilariously cringey pickup line, but one aside by the writer made me wince.

ASDKHGKJ. This is not the first time I've seen an article about BL or gay romance in general speculate that the reason female audiences enjoy gay male romance is because there are no other threatening, icky girls on screen. I find this exceedingly irritating and misogynistic and I'm gonna rant about it. Now, look. Maybe there are women-identifying people out there watching mlm romance because they are threatened by beautiful actresses. Maybe. I haven't met every woman in the world. But this reasoning is, in my opinion, some male-gaze bullshit and needs to be smacked down. A non-exhaustive list of reasons to like mlm romance that AREN'T based on some weird idea of female competitiveness and insecurity: 1. Queer people... exist? Look, the LGBTQ+ community alone isn't the reason KP had huge international success. Just numbers-wise, it was probably watched by more straight people than not. But ignoring that audience makes absolutely no sense, especially because sexuality is fluid and many viewers interested in LGBTQ+ media may be uncertain/exploring. Cultural anthropologist Thomas Baudinette has talked about how many "straight women" exploring BL turned out not to be so straight. It's a thing. (Here on Tumblr the LGBTQ+ audience is THE thing, but there's a lot of selection bias here, obviously.)

2. A good romance is a good romance

In my personal (and admittedly limited) experience, cishet men have a hard time grasping this, but give me a good, swoony romance and IDGAF about the genders involved. I've noticed this is very common among my female-identifying and nonbinary friends, regardless of their sexual attractions in real life. Good chemistry is good chemistry, a good story is a good story, and honestly it's kinda insulting to silo LGBTQ+ romance off as something you need a particular reason to watch, if you're someone who likes watching romance. 3. Female gaze

Look. Mile and Apo are blisteringly hot individuals. It's interesting this article mentions the action sequences and not the inherent appeal of, say, these two humans exploring each other's bodies in front of God and Deutsche Bank:

But to get a little more thinky about horniness: If you're a female-identifying person interested in men, it can be a tough slog out there. I'm coming from a western perspective, where romance is looked down upon in general. (Asian media seems more willing to look at the romance audience and go "hmm... $$$!" instead of "ugh, girl stuff.") And even when you get romance-driven stories, the male gaze is fucking ubiquitious. I remember having my mind blown some years ago by Outlander -- a show I did not make it through otherwise -- because the wedding episode in the first season has a sex scene in which the camera lingers on the male lead's face. That is some female gaze shit that you just do not see. I just spent a couple minutes checking in with the sex scenes in Bridgerton, probably the biggest romance-genre hit in the U.S. in some time, made explicitely for a female audience in mind, and even there, the camera spends FAR more time on the female leads' faces in sex scenes. Presumably the idea is that the female viewing audience will be inserting themselves into the scene and imagining her pleasure as their own, but ... show me a man's O-face, you cowards.

KP (and BL in general) does that.

I mean, quite literally. But also figuratively - men are posited as objects of desire, and the viewer is the agent desiring them. Taking a straight female as our theoretical viewer: We're so, so socialized to see females as the objects of desire and men as the agents of desire that even media made with straight women in mind parks the camera on the female lead. BL turns that on its head. The female viewer isn't watching a stand-in for herself being desired. She's actively desiring. I hope it's clear that this is miles away from "other girls are threatening." It's about being the one with agency for once.

4. Removal of the burden of one gajillion years of patriarchical bullshit

This is like a trauma response or some shit, istg, but sometimes it's nice to watch a romance not weighed down by 300,000 years of hetero gender relations. How many times have we seen a female character who is just a male fantasy or who starts out great but gets ruined by bad writing and it's like... fuck. Someone has probably written about this a lot more eloquently and intelligently than me, but sometimes it's just like, geez. Leave women out of it. Let us rest. I'm joking a bit, and this entirely elides the fact that non-het relationships can be just as abusive and problematic as a het relationship out there in the real world, but in the realm of fantasy I do think there's an appeal to stripping away at least part of the gender discourse. Especially for a fully escapist show like KP -- personally, I love a good female character, but I did not have any problem with the dearth of them in that series. Don't make me worry, even subconsciously, about the mafia's maternity leave policy, okay?? Contrary to idea that the mlm aspects save some sort of self-insert space for me in that romance, I as a woman-identified person did not want to be anywhere NEAR that hot mess. I wanted a world that touched on exactly zero of my real-life concerns.

Ok, maybe one real-world concern: How to find a small animal vet at an inconvenient hour.

Anyway, like I said at the start, I can't possibly explain everyone's motivations for watching KP or BL or anything, really. The world is a rich tapestry and sexuality is not a simple binary. But boiling it all down to, "women are insecure" ain't it and I would love to see that explanation permanently retired from casual use. EDIT: I forgot the link to the original article.

If you want to understand why some people assigned female at birth claim a transfem identity, you should look into the "boys' love" genre and the communities/academic research about it

these people fetishize male femininity, they want to be like the male characters in this genre. The reason is always the same. They see trans women as men who wear dresses

i'm actually an asian studies major with a focus on japan, and i took a class on youth culture, so i'm not unfamiliar with this.

firstly, let's not let it get away from us that the term "fetish" when discussing gender identity is common transphobic rhetoric. taking the side of trans women does not let you escape this.

while i think a fixation with male femininity does not encapsulate everyone's reasons for identifying in such a way, it feels accurate for a certain subset. i've seen certain explanations that lead me towards that understanding.

the connection to BL is, in my mind, a bit spurious, but i understand how you arrived at that. i would definitely characterize BL fans as having that fixation. additionally, i would say they have a fixation with the homoerotic, but one which still allows them to maintain the integrity of their sexuality. the BL fan is able to enjoy the taboo of queer sexuality while avoiding it "tainting" their self-understanding, as their heterosexuality means they ought to be attracted to both characters involved. trying to map that understanding onto the AFAB trans woman feels difficult, to say the least. they can enjoy the taboo of queer gender without it "tainting" their femininity, maybe? i don't really see it.

when i look at my feelings on the matter reductively, it does feel like they are seeing trans women as men in dresses. looking past that, however, it feels more like trans women are positioned as people who resist masculinity by embracing femininity. the trans woman is treated as though her masculinity is stuck to her - to have had the experience of masculinity marks her as aberrant - and it must be actively shirked, even atoned for. for someone raised under the expectation of femininity, to resist their own masculinity is not as radical an action.

however, in the context of patriarchal gender norms and liberal feminism, resisting masculinity in general is an end in and of itself, and perhaps that battle is applied internally as well. (i would also like to note that resisting masculinity and its supposedly predatory and oppressive nature was, rather famously, among michfest's justifications for excluding trans women. figuring out the exact way this connects to my previous point is left as an exercise for the reader.) for the transmasc AFAB trans woman in particular, which is an extant category, it may become an exercise in denying the privilege of masculinity they have obtained. (see michfest again, and its willingness to allow trans men.) trans women, in this sense, become a potent image - people whose masculinity is stuck to them, but who sacrifice the privilege it brings.

to me, the AFAB people i understand identifying as trans women - and i use that phrasing intentionally - have, for one reason or another, had that experience of being excluded from femininity or expected to perform masculinity. (i've seen the most reasonable takes come from intersex trans women, which should be no surprise.) i have seen them express resentment at the idea of identifying as an "AFAB trans woman" in specific, as their life experiences have already laid bare the arbitrary nature of birth assignment.

i think saying someone with an F on their birth certificate categorically cannot identify as a "trans woman" is reductive, a perspective i have come to after looking more into the topic. however, i think if one is compelled to identify as an "AFAB trans woman," they should take a deep look at the reason they have for centering their assigned gender in their identity - a thing they are very willing to accuse trans women of doing. to highlight one's AFABness is perhaps to purport a more legitimate access to the title of "woman", which is in direct opposition to any transfeminism i recognize or respect.

I read all of The Honest Life of a Game Studio and now I am obsessed do you have recs for anything like it.

I wish. I FUCKING WISH. but it’s really one of a kind. higefusa really just wrote mundane slice of life office drama with the level of detail that could only be provided by a gamer who has worked in the industry AND he threw in some life or death stakes as a treat. how often do we get an incredibly normal office worker stuck in time prison??? and it’s ONE ARC??? not often enough.

none of these are gonna be just like game-ya but in terms of romances with attention to detail for industry/niche fields… ok all of these are gonna be kind of weird so bear with me.

double section is a BL about an auditor for an insurance company and an insurance salesman, I wouldn’t necessarily give it a blanket rec but I liked how Passionate the main characters were about audits and workplace regulations. a lot of heated drama for the most normal office setting possible. in the author’s note the artist talks about interviewing health insurance salesmen.

ginmokusei is more of a conventional BL but it’s about a guy who inherited his grandpa’s tailor shop and an ex maître d who shows up and demands to help him before he goes bankrupt. there’s a little bit about branding and marketing and bank loans. what has Always Stayed With Me is when the love interest basically goes like ‘you’re using all these flashy ads and being really pushy with discounts. are you selling beef bowls.’ every time I pass a clothes shop that goes really flashy with the discount banners I think ‘are they selling beef bowls…’

panel x magic. okay I said it was going to be weird. so this yuri is about a recent graduate who applies for office jobs and ends up doing image editing for… I guess a brothel? it doesn’t go into critiques of the sex industry, but I thought it was interesting how it takes a really logistical perspective in terms of marketing, advertising, and image manipulation… one of the chapters has the main character going like ‘oh god I’m trying to edit this risqué photo by making the thighs thinner and giving the face a glow-up but I keep making the model look like a weird alien this looks like something from a photo booth’ and gets advice from her coworkers like ‘hey why don’t you look up makeup tutorials to get a sense of what to touch up.’ hasn’t been translated in a while but it kind of hits that… really in-depth look at the logistics of a job.

I think there’s more I’m not remembering at the moment, at one point I think sundry made a joke about rating office romances by how much office work is shown. there’s a couple ones that *kinda* fit but not really… wait. wait wait wait. WAIT. oh my god it has such a h•rny title. okay. so I’m being 100% sincere when I say that the main story for hammered and pounded is a BL with interesting office politics. it’s also incredibly h•rny, but game-ya gets pretty h•rny so whatever. but yeah there’s a whole subplot where the love interest, who works in sales, has actually always wanted to work in R&D, and it becomes A Whole Thing where the head of R&D is in conflict with the head of sales over whether or not a transfer is gonna happen and there’s no romance involved with the conflict it’s all office politics

and in a similar vein, to your right, you will see my boyfriend is about a guy who’s working as a tour guide in kyoto and at the artist talks about how she used to work as a tour guide. I think it’s fun, though I have my qualms. the main character does do studying about how to be an effective tour guide and goes from being like ‘ugh I’m saying all the facts but no one’s listening’ to ‘haha check out this extremely long name of the temple we’re about to see! make sure to remember it, it’ll be the password for getting off the bus ;D’

I have another category of vaguely similar vibes of genre bending mundane office work + fantastical situations

tokusatsu gagaga is a gen series that’s a BIG fave of mine, the main character is an OL who loves tokusatsu so she imagines a lot of scenarios with that sort of vibe. it’s not diagetic, but it’s really fun when it’s stuff like ‘I’M AT KARAOKE WITH MY COWORKERS BUT I CAN’T OUT MYSELF AS A TOKUSATSU OTAKU THIS IS JUST LIKE BEING ATTACKED BY A KARAOKE-THEMED MONSTER EMERJASON HELP ME!!!!’ the eng tl hasn’t been updated in a while but there’s a live action adaption that’s really good

magilumiere co. ltd. is a gen series that’s basically ‘what if magical girls were like… sanitation workers for monsters’ so it’s a lot of company logistics in a fantastical setting. I don’t think I got that far into it before getting distracted, but it was interesting (though perhaps overly generous/idealistic about start-ups as a concept).

idk if ur into bl but there’s a rlly good game called “slow damage” by nitro chiral. they’re the same company who made dramatical murder…so if you know. then you know how this game will play out 😭 but i’m pretty sure slow damage is more of their darker games.

it’s not free, but for what it’s worth (about $20 usd), id say i don’t regret buying it myself. i think it would fit right into your ally bc when i’m talking dark content��i mean it! if i remember correctly, it follows a depressed desk worker (bc ofc) who’s also a painter trying to get some cash yk?? and the cool thing about the mc is he has the ability to see people’s deepest darkest desires, which he uses as inspo to create art.

and this game is not afraid about getting depraved 😅 one of my fav characters (besides the mc bc i actually love him) is this dude named madarame, iirc??? and he’s every masochists wet dream 🫣 don’t @ me for that lmfaooo

it’s such a wild game!! i loved the nsfw scenes so much, i encourage you to look up some of the cutscene art bc it’s genuinely so beautiful 😩 there’s always some kind of blood involved and they’re usually banging at some decrypt place that prolly stinks so hard. despite all of that, the mc always looks like he’s on cloud nine, even when he’s chained up and bleeding profusely 😳

and it’s not just the nsfw scenes that has me drooling, but the story itself is intensely gripping??? like i’m hooked from beginning to end. and this is coming from someone who studied/s classical lit or literature in general…dunno if that holds any substance, but trust me when i say i’ve read countless of books and consumed enough media that it’s tantamount to mt kilimanjaro, but by far slow damage is one of the best visual novel games i’ve ever had the pleasure of playing 😖 usually vn games have good art and spicy scenes, but never plot. but this game blew my exception. so if you’re not much into how gorey it can get (bc the spicy scenes are low-key eroguro 80% of the time) then i’d say go for the story. it’s an absolute gem and thought provoking.

anyway sorry for the long rant 😭 this game is my guilty pleasure and idk if you’ve heard of it or what, but i don’t hear many people talk about it!! if you like euphoria, slow damage is not graphic in the same way, but it’s definitely dark and they’re not afraid to show the pleasure that comes from the pain 🫣

ps…in terms of yandere themes, idk if i’m remembering anything right bc it’s been a hot min, but it’s not really set in canon or directly in the game whether the yandere trope is applicable. but ngl, almost all characters display some kind of yandere characteristic where they’ll say the craziest shit and do something 10x crazier 😭 i mean if it wasn’t evident enough with some of them tying down and forcing themselves on the mc, then idk what is 🤔 but yes, it does get super intense!! highly recommend it, if i haven’t expressed that enough. they also have the opening soundtrack on youtube if you just look up slow damage op!! the soundtrack in general is actually good and fits with the vibes.

I personally haven’t played Dramatical Murder but during my teenage years, that game’s influence over the internet is ASTRONOMICAL ☠️ So, I always assumed that it’s something crazy, but never really bothered to know anything about it lol (Because I was an edgy little highschool girl who hated men ☠️) I just laugh every time I hear someone talk about it, because they’re so passionate. It’s cute ✨

Man, BL games always has the craziest fucking plot in the visual novel genre, and they always have the craziest characters too!! 😭 Otome games can only hope to have that kind content on their games lol Because eroguro is kind of a taboo topic, right? But I love to see more creative ways into corporating it into “dating” games 🧎‍♀️ This game seems like it checks the right corners of my brain, every single guilty pleasure so I don’t blame you for the enthusiasm! But don’t worry, we don’t judge other people here ☠️

Anyway, I personally haven’t played much BL games in general, (Because I’m personally more of a GL girl because women) and my knowledge of it only comes from friends who really loves them, but this sounds really interesting! Thank you for sharing ♥︎

i know i'm late, but i just binge watching Triage last night. i kinda love it that the mystery about the story revealed gradually. and the leads had nice chemistry, despite the low heat. and i enjoyed bingeing on it and pulling an all nighter.

so, i'd like to ask you, do you have any recommendations on bl series like Triage that are completed or ongoing, that the show would be enjoyable on binge watching?

10 BL Series to Binge Watch with Complex story elements

Okay, I'm not really a binger so these are my best guesses at keeping the tension alive. Also it seems like you want something on the meaty end in terms of length so only Thai and Taiwanese stuff qualified.

Case study: Triage (so obviously that would be on this list)

1 Until We Meet Again

Without question, a work of narrative genius with a powerful and cohesive romantic backbone and stellar performances. It is (to date) the only Thai BL (of c.250 watched) that I’ve rated a 10/10 predominantly on the basis of story structure. That said it is also very well cast (and it’s a BIG cast), with solid production values, and enduring pair branding as well as being the best Thai BL from a storytelling perspective. I think the story is good enough to carry the tensions. I also binges this on my first watch (it was already out when I discovered it) so I can attest to it being bingable. More discussion on why I love it so much here.

2 He's Coming to Me

Boy and ghost boy fall in love, must solve ghost’s murder. Peak pining but also pretty tame, features my favorite sweet but important coming out sequence. The third in my precious triumvirate of unbeatable Thai BLs, that are only nominally BL because the story, acting, and production values are so good. (Together with UWMA & 1k*).

3 Not Me

GMMTV gave us a dark disestablishment narrative (in a time of civil unrest) with established queer award-winning director Anucha and starring the biggest guns of BL, OffGun and THIS WAS AN AMAZING THING to get to experience at the time - nerve racking but remarkable. But was it ACTUALLY BL? It certainly has a lot of BL elements, but in the end romance was not what this show was about, or even what it was genuinely trying to be as a performance piece. Still a remarkable moment in Thai cinema, certainly worth your time. Don’t worry, it all ends happily. Full review.

4 I Feel You Linger in the Air

I truly loved this time travel romance BUT for the ending it would have gotten a 10/10 from me. IFYLITA is an exquisite BL, from filming techniques to narrative framework (much like Until We Meet Again). Steeped in history and family drama it edges into lakorn (but no as much as To Sir With Love and with way less scenery chewing). This is an elegant and classy BL… from Thailand which normally doesn't even try for classy. If HEA's are NOT important to you, you'll be fine, but I struggled. More here.

5 Kiseki: Dear to Me

The plot is totally ridiculous and slightly unhinged, but that’s normal for Taiwan. It involves all the tropes under a very casual framework of gay mafia gangs + food = love. Absolutely every character is queer. There’s a gum-ball machine of cameos, elder gay rep, great chemistry from all pairs, and a KILLER side couple. As a result Kiseki is a poster child for Taiwanese BL, and I happen to love Taiwanese BL. Bonus? They also managed to END IT WELL, which we cannot expect from Taiwan. (Triggers for knife play, child abuse, lingering trauma.)

6 Make a Wish

(from Sammon - Manner of Death & Triage) about a doctor who can see the dead and strikes a bargain with a wish-granting irreverent tree angel to try and cure himself - naturally they fall in love. Stars Fluke Natouch opposite not Ohm, but who cares bc Fluke has chemistry with everybody. Once again the Thai afterlife is incredibly bureaucratic but I enjoyed the premise and the unfolding of the story (it’s not predictable but still satisfying and with nice little twist). I like that the doctor is just gay af and has a fag hag bestie and everything. The cast is excellent but the comedic stylings are often too overblown and tonally off. It had sad parts and did make me cry but is ultimately happy with a great sex scene, good smiley kisses, and all the agency.

7 HIStory 3: Trapped

Viki

Basically the definition of enemies to lovers from Lin Pei Yu. This is a cop + the mafia man he is chasing but WAIT, they fall in love. Added bonus side couple: assassin and nerd cop ALSO falling in love. It’s great. All the leads are stellar. Its high heat, fun action, and a bit of a mystery drama but pretty about all of it. My only warning is that the main couple doesn’t entirely end up together, it’s implied, but… amorphous ending.

8 Never Let Me Go

Bodyguard romance where poor boy must watch over rich boy for family obligation reasons. Simple premise well executed with a few bumps that made it feel like it was trying to tackle too much (when it wasn’t). Still, an enjoyable show that benefited from being handed to PondPhuwin who did a stellar job with their roles and chemistry. Of GMMTV handing out new series to established pairs in 2023 this is one of the most successful IMHO. It's typically Thai in that it's a bit bloated and has a confusing plot, but at least it HAD a plot and the central relationship is solid and loyal. The Our Skyy 2 follow up is great too. And very much adds to the cannon in a fun way rather than feeling superfluous - making this show ultimately 14 eps rather than 12.

9 The Eclipse

GMMTV does gay Blacklist with a good boy/bad boy pairing. This is a good show but the cast is excellent and the leads are absolutely flawless, which elevates it beyond just "a good show." We got a nuanced and multifaceted burgeoning relationship: philosophical (and socio-political) conflict contrasted to moments of empathy; flirtation contrasted to moments of genuine affection, plus plenty of angst. This narrative is less about love than it is about courage and tenderness. However, near the end the pacing was off and the plot frustrating. Still, this is an enjoyable watch, with a finale that features verbal consent and a fun blooper reel.

10 Ghost Host Ghost House

This is light horror combined with family drama built around a well executed BL trough-line that felt honestly queer with fantastic chemistry from the lead pair. (I hope that we see more of them.) Pluem delivers the softest most seductive krap ever, Tod Techit (Kewin) is one of the prettiest humans on the planet, and watching these boys flirt over noodles is an unalloyed pleasure. Use of I/you pronouns is super interesting and cute as well. For me, personally, the surrounding cast, premise, and story didn’t resonate but if you like a touch of gothic in your BL this might appeal.

3 Will Be Free

Queer AF crime thriller about three 20 somethings on the run after accidentally killing an assassin: a grifter, a nerdy mafia kid, and a stripper. They're chased by more assassins out for revenge.

It’s actually a remarkable piece of storytelling, using a pressure cooker of tension and suspense to bring about investigations into what love, romance, friendship, and identity actually mean. This show probably doesn’t qualify as BL but it does qualify as very very queer.

What it does well is examine many different aspects of queer identity, morality, and life choices based on repression and or acceptance of that identity using the framework of a crime triller.

It’s an adventure narrative, our three main characters are on the run together, being chased by assassins who are themselves dealing with the grief that results from love, all kinds of love. Meanwhile the 3 protagonists fall in love with each other and explore the boundaries and meaning of friendship/love.

Manner of Death

Gay romantic suspense series with added cactus baby. Doctor & Mafia boy can't keep hands off each other, so also end up with chili plant baby.

Am I making sense? No? Well neither does it, but ho boy is it fun to watch MaxTul do... whatever it is they're doing.

I like MoD a lot but I’m conflicted over it being actual BL. It’s a great gay romantic suspense, although the mystery element is its primary weakness.

MaxTul, the Kings of Chemistry, are, of course, perfect and perfectly cast (and chemically unfair), but their romance thread is more a distraction than an addition. Still, I could watch them make-out the phonebook. Watch along here.

Kiseki: Dear To Me Live Blogging

I initially didn't add this to my watchlist despite hearing good things about it when it was airing (esp because I heard that it kinda fell apart plot-wise toward the end maybe? I don't remember) but people's talks about the side ship had piqued my interest, so I added it a few months later. I'm in the mood for something that has Things Going On other than just a sweet romance, so I hope this scratches that itch.

Also, I don't tend to watch the Behinds but this ep's one gave some good info like Chen Yi at first didn't know it was Ai Di (which I got based on him shushing Ai Di and saying Ai Di's gonna be mad if he hears) but thought he realized soon after but apparently Chen Yi didn't know it was Ai Di until the tears came down. And the heart-wrenching emotions Ai Di's going through because he knows it's the first time they're doing this but it's also the last time and they're not gonna meet again

Fave Scene: The Ai Di/Chen Yi scene. I wasn't as into the sexiness of it like the Zongyi/Ruei one. This one was more about the psychological warfare, drunk Chen Yi, their emotions and confusion, the tears, Ai Di topping (off-screen), Ai Di's hands around Chen Yi's throat a few times, etc. the devastation of it all when Ai Di pretends it was all nothing.

Ep 10 (May 16)

Until last episode, I was more into the main couple despite liking Ai Di and Chen Yi's storyline as well. But now, suddenly idc about the main couple, I just want my Ai Di/Chen Yi.

Also, does this show have plot... what is actually happening and why?

Overall:

The thing with these crime/mafia BLs is that often they literally have no plot. I think Manner of Death is probably the most coherent though it's more cop-show than crime show and then History 3: Trapped. But most stuff like KinnPorsche, Never Let Me Go, Pit Babe, etc. don't have a coherent plot or just focuses on the drama rather than actual plot and this show is also like that. The thing about this is that it doesn't even bother establishing anything, like okay at least Pit Babe has clear outline like Tony has child trafficking ring, we should stop this trafficking ring, and a bunch of stuff happens. Here, what even is going on? something with Zhang Teng... but the gangs and the families and the crimes are all so vague and out of sight, it's mostly just about the relationships among the backdrop.

I don't know what to rate this because the plot and storyline do not feel coherent or engaging, but I really enjoyed the characters and the couples, specifically Zongyi/Ruei in the first half and Ai Di/Chen Yi in the second half. The couples also have some fun tropes that I like (age gap with the younger guy being overly eager, the ChenAi dynamic esp the part where they both manhandle each other so much) and Ai Di is a menace, which is always enjoyable. Is it enough for the show to introduce a criminal and crime-life element but not explain or expand on it at all? I don't necessarily think so, but honestly, if I'm plagued by the couples or feel the need to rewatch certain parts, I'll increase the rating.

Might also increase the rating if I end up writing ChenAi fic because the ship feels like it should fuel my fic-writing but since it wrapped up so nicely, I don't really feel the itch to write something more. Also, I love how Chen Yi would be manhandling and carrying Ai Di around while Ai Di's often wrapping his hand around Chen Yi's neck and being sadistic lol (including the second time Ai Di had Chen Yi tied to the chair and with a bloody lip and was grasping him by the chin, ahh)

Time to start a new drama! I'm quite sure this one is going to be silly but it's OffGun and I love them so here we are.

Dangerous Romance| Good. Could have been better

First of all, why is the title Dangerous Romance? Is it because of the social standing of the two leads? Or is it because really violence is involved?

Honestly speaking, the same trope of enemies to lovers and smart boy tutoring the dumb boy and falling in love has been overused, even by GMMTV standards. So, I will just write about a few things only

(Spoilers ahead for those who have not watched the series, so proceed with caution.)

Firstly, nobody is happy with their surroundings.

Sailom is poor but has a living relationship with his caring elder brother. He is a strong and dignified boy.

Kanghan is rich, has everything but feels neglected. Anybody else in Kanghan's place would have been happy but not Kanghan. Boy wants his father to focus on him. Which is absolutely right. There is less drama that is why they had to bring in bullying.

Sailom is poor but possess a spine of steel. He is the top student of his year and is getting a special scholarship to study in the prestigious school. And works when he is not studying to earn money.

Chimon was channeling his inner Wasuthorn when he was answering the math questions written on the whiteboard.

While at first disliking (or not really) Kanghan, he starts to become friends with him. Sailom's friendship changes Kanghan for good. I like how Perth managed to show the slow but gradual growth until he falls in love.

Sailom falls first but Kanghan falls harder. And Kanghan is not a windmill in love but a hurricane.

The upgrade of him from enemy to friend to lover to sugar daddy was pretty quick. And his possessiveness over his love is also immense but his heart is at the right place.

The actual flow of the story starts around episode 10. Kanghan gets mad at his dad and elopes with his boyfriend. But being the dutiful son-in-law and friend Sailom keeps Kanghan's dad updated. In fact, Kanghan's dad and grandma trust Sailom more than Kanghan. I was snorting a lot.

The plot thickens as Kang's father gets shot and Sailom's brother admits his fault. A rift starts between the two. Kanghan's love and possessiveness wins though. Sailom is wind and Kanghan is windmill. Without Sailom Kanghan is nothing.

The rest of the episodes are like Bollywood melodrama. Guns blazing, thugs entering hospital, firings ensued, Kanghan gets shot but no blood comes out. I am glad that they did not extend that shot otherwise I would really drop the series at that point.

The show mentioned teen escort services due to poverty which I was not ready to witness. Interesting addition ngl.

Chimon has always been a very strong actor. He eats up all kinds of roles. Perth too, has played his parts exceptionally well. I liked their dynamic, however stilted due to the script, in Never Let Me Go. And this series is a testament of their acting prowess.

The side couple of Nawa and Guy is much more interesting. Pawin and Marc have been main leads of My Gear, Your Gown series and are an established pair of BL world. They portray the same type of enemies to lovers trope but I enjoyed Nawa more than Pai because of his sassiness. And they are so cute!!!!!

Overall, it's an okay series. Maybe 3.5 out 5 from me.

lol Takatora-kun has taken over my brain...

i usually don't like omegaverse, but this one at least tries to examine the sexism, though i think it models a lot of the omega oppression on sexism that women face irl (which kinda makes sense, since omegaverse is usually very bio-essentialist and often feature rigid gender roles hopped up on steroids, with omegas taking the place of women)

i know the series is gonna focus on Takatora and his lover(s), Arisaka and Kameyama, but I do hope we see more of the others in the omega class without them necessarily being involved in a sexual/romantic entanglement with Takatora (tho it could also be interesting to see what kind of relationship he'd have with each of them).

the most interesting thing to me is the examination of the circumstances and survival strategies of each the different boys—Takatora presents himself as more alpha than the alphas, Arisaka's been sexualized and sexually assaulted since childhood and leans into the hypersexual omega image (though he later decides to turn his life around), Enma is a radfem radom who hates alphas and fellow omegas he deems sucking up to alphas, Inumata is the well-meaning but naive liberal who holds some deep-seated prejudices, Kameyama seeks to educate others about systemic oppression + enter politics to change things for the better, Karasuma plays by society's rules and tries to bag a high-spec alpha husband, and we frankly don't really know enough of Yama'arashi and Oosuzume* to work out exactly what's up with them just yet.

*my read on Oosuzume is that while he discovered he's an omega later in life like Takatora, unlike Takatora he does enjoy omega gender presentation, but is perceived as "a joke" because of his alpha-like build & looks. maybe his character is gonna touch on not fitting into the typical beauty standards of his gender (specifically being 'too masculine', which is related to transmisogyny despite him being cis, if he does indeed identify as an omega).

As for Yama'arashi, all we know is that he's a capable cook, allegedly has good fashion sense, is Inumata's close friend, and is studying abroad at his parents' insistence. He also got notably passionate when rebutting Takatora's claim about alphas being naturally more suited to STEM, which might suggest he has an interest in the field? idk

I am also incredibly curious about the role of women, and how omega oppression intersects with women's oppression, since women are noted to exist in-universe. So far we know that betas can only have children with women, and betas are supposedly dying out; we also know that omegas are the main child-birthing population, suggesting alpha-omega couples take up the vast majority in their society (since alpha-omega pairs are the only ones that result in pregnancy, aside from pairings that involve a woman. and if women can get pregnant from omegas and alphas as well, then the statistic that omegas have the highest rate of giving birth doesn't make as much sense given the rest of the worldbuilding). Also, women are only brought up in discussions of childbirth in the manga as of Chapter 9.

Now, do I think the manga will actually examine the issues women face in this omegaverse? Probably not, since it's a BL, and a lot of the sexism women face irl is transferred to omegas here. But it'd be terribly ironic if a manga exploring sexism introduces women in its setting and then proceeds to ignore them entirely.

I'm also interested to see if they will delve into the history of how ABO came about, since Arisaka's bf mentioned that alphas and omegas were rare in the past, suggesting that society used to mirror our own (i.e. male and female reproduction). However, in the manga's present time, alpha-omega pairings and mpreg is the norm of society, and I'm interested to see how the change came about

betas—who can only reproduce with women—are now apparently dying out, and although it's not explicitly stated, it seems the population of women is also low; there are several characters who have brothers, but there is no mention of sisters yet, and we also haven't seen a woman appear in the manga so far.

it's stated in the manga that the ABO gene is passed along the Y chromosome. since offspring from alpha-omega unions are the most common, it suggests that the most common chromosome combinations** would probably be YY, XY, and XX (only if both parents have an X chromosome). Assuming YY is a viable combination in this world, and that any offspring with a Y chromosome is classified as male (or rather 'not-women', with 'women' being those with XX chromosomes), it does make sense why male ('not-women') offspring seems to be more common in their society (since a YY parent will always produce offspring with a Y chromosome).

**also this is grade-school level genetics; real biology is much more complex

i'm also interested in portrayals of trans people in an ABO setting, though I don't think the manga will touch on it; one could maybe argue that Takatora could be read as trans (socialized as an alpha and has no desire to socialize as an omega, somewhat uncomfortable/disgusted with his omega characteristics), but imo it's presented more like he's dealing with internalized misogyny misomegyny than tackling trans issues

anyway, excited to see more of the worldbuilding + the other omegas who aren't involved with Takatora, though i'm trying to keep my expectations low bc i know worldbuiding is not really the point of BL smut manga, and background characters are called background characters for a reason
