If you want to understand why some people assigned female at birth claim a transfem identity, you should look into the "boys' love" genre and the communities/academic research about it
these people fetishize male femininity, they want to be like the male characters in this genre. The reason is always the same. They see trans women as men who wear dresses
i'm actually an asian studies major with a focus on japan, and i took a class on youth culture, so i'm not unfamiliar with this.
firstly, let's not let it get away from us that the term "fetish" when discussing gender identity is common transphobic rhetoric. taking the side of trans women does not let you escape this.
while i think a fixation with male femininity does not encapsulate everyone's reasons for identifying in such a way, it feels accurate for a certain subset. i've seen certain explanations that lead me towards that understanding.
the connection to BL is, in my mind, a bit spurious, but i understand how you arrived at that. i would definitely characterize BL fans as having that fixation. additionally, i would say they have a fixation with the homoerotic, but one which still allows them to maintain the integrity of their sexuality. the BL fan is able to enjoy the taboo of queer sexuality while avoiding it "tainting" their self-understanding, as their heterosexuality means they ought to be attracted to both characters involved. trying to map that understanding onto the AFAB trans woman feels difficult, to say the least. they can enjoy the taboo of queer gender without it "tainting" their femininity, maybe? i don't really see it.
when i look at my feelings on the matter reductively, it does feel like they are seeing trans women as men in dresses. looking past that, however, it feels more like trans women are positioned as people who resist masculinity by embracing femininity. the trans woman is treated as though her masculinity is stuck to her - to have had the experience of masculinity marks her as aberrant - and it must be actively shirked, even atoned for. for someone raised under the expectation of femininity, to resist their own masculinity is not as radical an action.
however, in the context of patriarchal gender norms and liberal feminism, resisting masculinity in general is an end in and of itself, and perhaps that battle is applied internally as well. (i would also like to note that resisting masculinity and its supposedly predatory and oppressive nature was, rather famously, among michfest's justifications for excluding trans women. figuring out the exact way this connects to my previous point is left as an exercise for the reader.) for the transmasc AFAB trans woman in particular, which is an extant category, it may become an exercise in denying the privilege of masculinity they have obtained. (see michfest again, and its willingness to allow trans men.) trans women, in this sense, become a potent image - people whose masculinity is stuck to them, but who sacrifice the privilege it brings.
to me, the AFAB people i understand identifying as trans women - and i use that phrasing intentionally - have, for one reason or another, had that experience of being excluded from femininity or expected to perform masculinity. (i've seen the most reasonable takes come from intersex trans women, which should be no surprise.) i have seen them express resentment at the idea of identifying as an "AFAB trans woman" in specific, as their life experiences have already laid bare the arbitrary nature of birth assignment.
i think saying someone with an F on their birth certificate categorically cannot identify as a "trans woman" is reductive, a perspective i have come to after looking more into the topic. however, i think if one is compelled to identify as an "AFAB trans woman," they should take a deep look at the reason they have for centering their assigned gender in their identity - a thing they are very willing to accuse trans women of doing. to highlight one's AFABness is perhaps to purport a more legitimate access to the title of "woman", which is in direct opposition to any transfeminism i recognize or respect.

You take their explicit narratives about their transfem identity at face value, when they are really made for public-image reasons—to make their motivations appear more acceptable to us. It might be true that some claim that identity also because they felt excluded from femininity, but that's just a secondary, tertiary reason, *not* the main one. Without that main reason, they wouldn't identify as such. So it's not just a subset, because most of these 'AFAB transfems' really identify that way mainly because they are attracted to male femininity. You might feel that it's 'just a subgroup, not the majority' that is motivated by this because they are not overtly, loudly showcasing their attraction to male femininity. It's far more discreet, but it's nonetheless the reason
The BL connection is that they want to be trans women for the same reasons they want to be BL characters—they want to free themselves from female constraints. They see female femininity as a burden, a chore, bland, unappealing, as stripping away part of their personhood. They find conventional male masculinity unappealing as well, but for different reasons. It’s about rejecting gender nonconformity and embracing what they’re attracted to—their idealized version of what they wish men should be—androgyous, beautiful males, which allow them to explore femininity, masculinity, sexuality and all sorts of things from that appealing, personified perspective. It goes deeper than this.
So in short most afab transfems want to be transfem bc they find male femininity attractive, bc they want to (re)explore femininity from a male perspective.
this part parses:
"They see female femininity as a burden, a chore, bland, unappealing, as stripping away part of their personhood. They find conventional male masculinity unappealing as well, but for different reasons."
but the rest reads like a villain monologue, especially:
"... they are really made for public-image reasons- to make their motivations appear more acceptable to us."
same shit terfs say about trans women!!
I think you might be deeper down the rabbit hole on this than me. a cautionary tale about where I don't want to be! so thanks!
"So in short most afab transfems want to be transfem bc they find male femininity attractive, bc they want to (re)explore femininity from a male perspective."
doing this is based and gender as fuck honestly? i just wish they wouldn't say that makes them trans women 🤷🏼‍♀️

some of the notes are very good. also common ireland W.
"The trannies should be able to piss in whatever toilet they want and change their bodies however they want. Why is it my business if some chick has a dick or a guy has a pie? I'm not a trannie or a fag so I don't care, just give 'em the medicine they need."
"This is an LGBT safe space. Of COURSE I fully support individuals who identify as transgender and their right to self-determination! I just think that transitioning is a very serious choice and should be heavily regulated. And there could be a lot of harm in exposing cis children to such topics, so we should be really careful about when it is appropriate to mention trans issues or have too much trans visibility."
One of the above statements is Problematic and the other is slightly annoying. If we disagree on which is which then working together for a better future is going to get really fucking difficult.

tags pass the vibe check
also we need NEED to get people to be less stupid about “misgendering” cis people. there’s not an intrinsic evil to mistaking someone’s pronouns or using the wrong ones, what makes it bad is the threat of corrective transphobic violence to put you back into place. trans people cannot do this to cis people. you are being fucking stupid and screwing over understandings of transphobia for suggesting these are equivalent situations at all, in the first place.

Hack the System! how to change your name and gender
(available on itch.io for download)
Have you or someone you know been wanting to legally change your name and/or gender within the USA? Are you unsure how to get started? Are you stuck on a step?
I use my legal and bureaucratic expertise to guide you through the process as someone who's volunteered at a legal clinic during law school and helped a couple of friends in different states change their names and/or genders over the years.
Whether you're trans or not, the process is the same, so even if you're solely wanting to change your name, this will still be helpful to you.

This is my very first zine ever! I'm so excited to have finally fulfilled this lifelong dream of making a zine. It was hard figuring out what the first topic of my zine should be, and I finally realized that I have information not everyone has access to thanks to my education, personal experiences, and personality. I always wish I could help everyone get their legal documents changed to reflect their identity, so maybe with this, I can somewhat do that.
I got the DIY zine booklet paper from strangeandunusual.design/punchkisspress. Going to my local zine fest was extra inspiring for finally actually making a zine, and shout out to brattyxbre for all of her resources!
Thank you so much for reading, I appreciate it more than you can imagine! Share this resource with anyone know who needs it, please. :) We all deserve to have our identities reflected in reality.

I like to draw a lot and lately I've been having a hard time finding references for a new project I'm working on.
I ask you if you wanna come over and let me take some pictures of you to use as reference, we can hang out and it'll be fun. You agree, happy to help your friend and have an excuse to hang out.
You come over and I ask you to do a few simple action poses. Nothing crazy. But then I point out the fact that your clothes are kinda baggy, so it'll be hard for me to understand your anatomy beneath them. I ask if you'd be willing to just wear your binder and boxers, and I promise these photos will only be seen by me. You agree again, because you know I won't share them, and we're both trans guys, so it's alright, right?
The poses get a bit more ... specific. I ask you to get on all fours. To lay on your back and stomach. To sit with your legs spread. Poses that are definitely meant to be provocative.
I finally tell you what the project is for. I'm drawing a lot of self-indulgent trans guy porn and want to make a short comic about it. I say that the most difficult thing to get references for is t guys with their pussy visible. So if you really wanted to be helpful, you could take your boxers off and let me see everything.
You agree. You kick your boxers off, and I continue making you pose in all sorts of ways that now feel outright humiliating. Sit on your ass and hold your legs open with your hands. Get on your hands and knees face down, ass up, and really put your ass up high. Lay like you're about to get fucked missionary style. Press yourself against the wall and spread your legs wide. Let me get a few up close pictures of you spreading your hole as wide as you can.
And despite how embarrassing this is, that I'm just your friend asking for a favor, you're getting wet. Really fucking wet. It only makes you even more embarrassed and you wonder if I notice it, because if I am, I'm not saying anything.
But I absolutely notice it. Its hard not to, when your pussy is literally fucking glistening in the light. I want to touch it so fucking bad its taking every last ounce of self restraint in me to not just start playing with you. I think of any excuse I can make up to touch you.
Finally I get my chance. You're in a pose where you can't reach your pussy very well to spread it open, so I use my fingers to spread it open myself.
"Holy shit, you're really wet right now. Are you wet like this all the time?" I finally ask, my fingers gently rubbing around your hole. It's actually a little shocking to me just how wet it feels.
You shake your head. Obviously, you're probably not gonna constantly be dripping, but I just wanted to make you say it.
"Why are you so wet right now, then? Is it because... of what we're doing?"
Slowly, you nod, feeling more embarrassed than you have this whole time.
"Huh. I didn't know my friend was such an exhibitionist slut." I say, fingers teasing up and down your cunt. Your entire body trembles and you let out a whine, unable to even formulate an answer right now.
I tease my fingers right around your hole. Pressing in just a slight bit. Pressing more and more until two of my fingers finally push inside your cunt, sliding deeper till they’re fully inside. “Sorry, I would’ve asked if I could penetrate you, but… I mean, its pretty obvious that’s what you want.”
My fingers sliding in and out of your hole faster till im fingerfucking you. My other hand coming up to gently pinch and pull at your clit, all thick and fat from T. You whine and grind down against my fingers. I flick your clit a few more time with my fingers before finally rubbing it in earnest like you so clearly need.
“I’ll let you cum, as long as you let me shove a dildo up your cunt later and take pictures of it. I need some good references of a little bitch getting fucked.”
You don’t just agree- you outright beg me to take all the pictures I want, just so you can cum.
“And its good jerk off material for me, too. Hope you don’t get too mad at me if I ‘accidentally’ take a few videos of it too.”
I slap your cunt with my hand, the noise wet and loud and filthy, before going back to rubbing your clit just how you love it being touched. Your entire body trembles at how turned on you are, how good you feel, and suddenly your orgasm is rushing through you, making your hips jerk, cunt clench around my fingers, as all you can do is let it take you. I keep fingerfucking you and rubbing you through your orgasm, not stopping till you seem coherent again.
“That’s a good fucking bitch.” I say, pulling out my fingers and licking them clean. I give your ass a firm slap as you collapse to the ground in exhaustion.
I take a quick picture of you like this, looking sated and well-fucked. “You’re the best model a guy could ask for. Now let me see your hole, I wanna capture the way it looks all stretched out right now.”

trans youth should be able to get hormones without parental consent
it is genuinely insane how much people focus on parents in the debate about trans rights and health care. like fundamentally trans youth are not considered human beings, they’re just proxies for their parents to either demonstrate how brave they are for not being transphobic, or to show the world how bigoted and backwards they are. like the trans youth in question are not talked about as real people, it’s always their fucking parents
