SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Michael Madigan’s stunning political collapse is expected to culminate Friday when the longest-serving legislative leader in U.S. history is sentenced on federal bribery, conspiracy and wire fraud convictions tied to a scheme to push legislation in exchange for jobs and contracts for his associates.
The former Illinois House speaker was convicted in February on 10 of 23 counts in a remarkable corruption trial that lasted four months. The case churned through 60 witnesses and mountains of documents, photographs and taped conversations.
Madigan will appear in U.S. District Court Friday in Chicago, where Judge John Robert Blakey will determine his sentence.
Federal prosecutors are seeking a 12 1/2-year prison term. Madigan’s attorneys are seeking probation, contending the government’s sentence would “condemn an 83-year-old man to die behind bars for crimes that enriched him not one penny.”
During a legislative career that spanned a half-century, Madigan served nearly four decades as speaker, the longest on record for a U.S. legislator. Combined with more than 20 years as chairperson of the Illinois Democratic Party, he set much of the state’s political agenda while handpicking candidates for political office. More often than not, he also controlled political mapmaking, drawing lines to favor his party.
Meanwhile, prosecutors said, the Chicago Democrat built a private legal career that allowed him to amass a net worth of $40 million.
Madigan was convicted on 10 counts of bribery, conspiracy, wire fraud and other charges for ensuring approval of legislation favorable to utility giant ComEd in exchange for kickbacks and jobs and contracts for loyalists, including a Chicago alderman seeking a paid job on a state board after retiring from government.
The jury deadlocked on six counts, including an overarching racketeering conspiracy charge, and acquitted him on seven others.
“Madigan’s criminal activity spanned nearly a decade and was particularly egregious because it involved efforts to enrich himself — both by maintaining his political power by securing do-nothing jobs for his political allies and by attempting to line his own pockets with legal business,” prosecutors wrote in a court filing. “In so doing, Madigan served his own personal interests and not the interests of Illinoisans.”
Defense lawyers called the government’s recommended sentence “draconian” and, given Madigan’s age, a life sentence. They asked Blakey to consider the totality of Madigan’s life and work and the need to care for his wife in requesting a sentence of five years’ probation, with one year of home confinement, a requirement to perform community service and a “reasonable fine.”
In a video submitted to the court, Madigan’s wife, Shirley, asks for a sentence of probation, explaining that Madigan is her caregiver and she would have to seek outside help if he is imprisoned. And, she says, “I’m a part of him.”
“There’s some days I keep him going,” Shirley Madigan says on the video. “He keeps me going sometimes, too, but I think that the impact that I have on him has been much, much larger.”
The court received more than 200 letters of support for Madigan, many from constituents, friends, leaders of nonprofits and other organizations that interact with the state. Some noted asking him for help just once. Most lauded him for dedication, integrity or a personal touch.
“Mike Madigan is a good man who has selflessly done an exceptional amount of good for others,” his lawyers wrote in a separate filing. “He is widely respected for his dedication to honesty and integrity.”
Tried alongside Madigan was his former legislative colleague and longtime confidant, Michael McClain. The jury couldn’t reach a decision on any of the six counts against McClain. He was convicted, though, in a separate trial over the ComEd conspiracy last year.

What your favorite jazzer says about you!
Louis Armstrong- You don’t know why I’ve just broken into your house and asked you at gunpoint what your favorite jazz artist is, as you don’t listen to much jazz.
Miles Davis- You’re basic.
Bill Evans- You’re racist.
Chett Baker- You want to have sex with Chett Baker.
Sun Ra- As a kindergartner, you were reprimanded for eating paper, an event that has haunted you for life. A career as a very unique artist awaits you. Also, you can name every species of preying mantis, all 51 of them.
Pharaoh Sanders- You don’t know shit about preying mantises.
Alice Coltrane- You’ve been trying to find Satchinada for the last 20 years, but it continues to allude you.
Phelonois Monk- Your favorite kind of sandwich is peanut butter and jelly.
Peter Brotzmann- You didn’t stop eating paper at kindergarten. In fact, as you read this, you’re currently eating the stuff. You do you, I guess.
João Gilberto- You constantly carry around a fanny pack full of important provisions such as trail mix. You’re disappointed that no one wants to use your Netflix password.
Wayne Shorter- Everyone laughs at your pointy shoes. “What are you some kind of elf?” they ask. Then, you kick them. They aren’t laughing after that.
Duke Ellington- A prestigious career of drawing of drawing furry smut awaits you. I salute you.
Ryo Fukuri- You keep a shotgun beneath your bed in case someone with tattoos comes too close to your front lawn.
Max Roach- You’re wondering if I may have switched those last two. No, I did not. Shut up.
Charles Mingus- You wear a bald cap wherever you go because it increases the chances of being slapped on the head- the most enjoyable aspect of living.
John Coltrane- You’ve been kicked out of eighteen Whole Foods stores, and you plan to make that number in the triple digits before you depart this green earth. Nothing brings you more satisfaction than opening the nut dispensers and watching the waterfall of cashews descend onto the ground.
Art Blakey- Fuck if I know.

THE JOY OF SEXTETS!
A JAZZ MESSENGERS TRIBUTE TO ART BLAKEY: CARL ALLEN with Brian Lynch, Donald Harrison, Robin Eubanks, Benny Green, and Alexander Claffy, SMOKE JAZZ CLUB, 28 FEBRUARY 2025, 9 pm set
DWAYNE CLEMONS with Amanda Sedgwick, Aaron Johnson, JinJoo Yoo, Jamale Davis, and Keith Balla, SMALLS JAZZ CLUB, 22 FEBRUARY 2025, 6 pm set
Cheesy heading aside (forgive me, though I may not forgive myself), there are rewarding things a three horn front line affords. Arrangements are more deliberate and the voicings are richer even as the band has to share solo space. Herbie Hancock’s Mwandisihi band was unique among the fusion bands of the 1970s for having three horns (and eventually also a synthesizer-ist) as the leader indulged his harmonic sensibilities. It is fitting to have CARL ALLEN’s curated tribute to Art Blakey as the Jazz Messengers always gave Buhaina an almost big band to drum for. It is interesting to me that somehow I found that set, replete with chestnuts from the Messengers’ book, fresher than DWAYNE CLEMONS’ almost retro ensemble.
CARL ALLEN did have a cast of graduates of Art Blakey University, including trombonist Robin Eubanks. There is something about that horns sonorities that fills out the sound as CLEMONS’ trumpet/alto sax/tenor sax didn’t quite have even though Aaron Johnson’s fine tenor was nimbler. Both Brian Lynch and Clemons himself are fine straightahead trumpeters with bright comfortable tone and well put together solos. I’d give a slight nod to Clemons though Lynch got the ballad showcase, I Waited For You, during the Smoke set. That Clemons was probably the strongest horn in his band and that Lynch was with Donald Harrison and Eubanks impacts how I heard them. Harrison, with a nifty combination of New Orleans and adventure, was the most interesting horn among the six. But I was quite interested in Amanda Sedgwick’s alto and, it seems, her leading role in the arrangements. But, while it was good to see JinJoo Yoo as an accompanist having just seen a trio set from her, watching Benny Green, a powerful trio/solo pianist, in a band was a delight. Of course, he handled it magnificently and could take his foot off the gas when he soloed because he had the band’s power to draw on. Peter Washington was on the bill for the Smoke gig and he did play with Blakey, but Alexander Claffy acquitted himself well on bass. Jamale Davis fell slight victim to the Smalls production values which can bury the bass particularly in larger ensembles, but his bowed solos were welcome. It was Carl Allen’s gig and he had Blakey as an inspiration, so he did all the right things. So did Keith Balla.
Still the CLEMONS gig felt more retro, even though at Smoke they played maybe even the old Messenger charts and certainly well worn tunes. But, with This One’s For Albert, Along Came Betty, Arabia, and Blues March to go with the ballad, they had a Wayne Shorter tune, two from Benny Golson, and a Curtis Fuller. They were punchier and leaner with crisper soloes. I suppose Sedgwick’s arrangements were just a bit too intricate and ends in themselves, so that this sextet was a small big band and not a harmonically rich players’ ensemble. Honeysuckle Rose and Easter Parade were surprisingly good vehicles for improvisation but they had a slightly cloying feel. They closed with a solid JJ Johnson blues, but his Hey George contrafact on Sweet Georgia Brown contributed to the old fashioned ness of the gig.
I suspect I would have been perfectly charmed had I seen Clemons et al if surrounded by the trios I was listening to when they played Smalls. But against the Blakey book and a notch better players, Harrison and especially Green, they faced my more critical ear.

The Forever Rule by Carrie Ann Ryan
The Forever Rule by Carrie Ann Ryan is the newest first book in a new series.  It is called The Cage Family.  The series looks like it is designed to focus on each of the various siblings in the series.   Interestingly enough the siblings are from two separate mothers and didn’t know about each other.  Their father’s will insists that the two families meet at least monthly, sharing a meal.
The cage family had a new group chat set up, but one of the brothers made a mistake and was one digit off of the right number.  An unknown person entered the chat and let them know.  For some reason Aston moved over to have a private chat with her and eventually Blakely and Aston met.  Everything seemed fine until Aston’s father died.
Aston Cage as the oldest sibling  is the CEO of the business and feels responsible for all the family and the employees at the various businesses.  He feels strongly that he doesn’t have time for his own life so he ghosts Blakey. Too bad he really felt strongly about her.
Meanwhile Blakely was fired from her job for corporate espionage when she danced once with Aston.  She applied for a new job only to be hired by Cage Industries working for Aston’s brother.  Once again Blakely and Aston were thrown together and their energy with each other keeps drawing them together.  Can they let go of all their concerns and just move on with each other? Avoiding her forever is not an option as she is his new sister's best friend.
The novel had fun characters and set up a new in a way that a lot of characters can be introduced.  The Forever Rule by Carrie Ann Ryan was a good read.

1/2We are at 4x02. He took a 30 minute break to call his ‘girls’ and came back with a ton of gossip. I am now wondering what kind of life he lives back home ngl. ‘Hit play! Lets get this party on the road!’ *starts dancing along to the intro* ‘oh i really fuck with this intro. Itd be better with more Brian and Justin but I’m willing to settle’ ‘SHANDA IS ALIVE! Oh poor baby, you will heal. And i will burn the world down to find those fuckers. Justin being friends with a drag queen makes sense…no offense Justin but that sandwich looks sad as fuck’ ‘THEYRE GOING TO THE FAIRY THING?! I WANNA GO TO!..what center? Is it that gay and lesbian center that supported that homophobe that covered up a gay mans murder? Because if so benny…it will happen again unfortunately.’ (I looked away for two seconds and he grabbed my face and squished it and turned it to the tv* LOOK AT BRIAN AND JUSTIN! Oh shit Brian is turning down jobs. So he’s not going solo? OH WAIT HE IS. Hell yeah THE BEYONCÉ OF THE GROUP!’ The fairy thing is happening ‘….i dont know what i imagined this would be but boy, was i wrong. *looks at me* what would my fairy name be?’ ‘Of course he immediately went to a sex shop. I feel so bad for him but we all gotta start somewhere. He’s gonna hate this though because of the whole noble thing’ ‘OH TED IS FINISHING REHAB! HELL YEAH BABE! You did it and im so happy for you. I love Blake, please dont let this be the last time i see him’ ‘ITS THE FEMALE BLONDIE! She IS SECRET AGENT! She wants to help Brian HAHA I KNEW I LIKED HER! *looks in amazement at Brian* Damn, he really looks good. YEAH BRIAN STEAL THE CLIENTS AND THE ASSISTANT. Okay this will sound weird but I really like his hair. He looks good poor.’ ‘Is the Team Brian shirt my fairy outfit? I need to figure out my name. They did Emmett dirty, he would’ve come up with a way better outfit. DUMPLING? I like it’ The center scene is up and it just showed Cody, please note this is the moment I officially start dying inside ‘HEY! My mom told me you cant whistle indoors cause its bad luck! Who’s he? I DONT LIKE THAT THEY KEEP SHOWING JUSTIN. This better not be this seasons Ethan. I dont like him. Get rid of him. Justin stop being impressed by stupidity..so his plan is to become the attacker?’ ‘Brian being a little shit to Ted.. feels like old times. (Brian does that up/cup thing) *starts pointing to the tv* UP! UP! I KNOW THAT!’ That scene with Ben and Hunter in the gym is on ‘Brian looking out for Hunter. What did i say about my uncle nephew duo?! I hope the boring doesnt rub off on Hunter’ ‘high alone in the woods dressed like a fairy? Emmett might be living my new fantasy. Of course the only friend he finds is some random old dude’ ‘ugh Bald Ad dude, go fuck yourself. BRIAN! go do your thing! Oh shit, thats fucking insane. DAMN BRIAN. I love that he knows the first ad is shit. I like this version of Brian, i fuck with this’ ‘Shanda baby, come on. (Justin says chicken is for lunch) damn. Him telling people off is kinda cool. HEY! Justin was a baby! He was a child! ITS FUCKED UP TO EXPECT HIM TO DO ANYTHING! He was a BABY!’ ‘BLAKEY! I really need him to be happy and healthy forever. I’m so happy for him’ and now the britin scene where Justin is drawing is on ‘Blondie, are you okay? his hand hurt- aw Brian to the rescue. Why does everyone keep forgetting that Brian was also at prom? This whole couple thingy they got going on this season, is *he makes a fist and smacks his chest twice and does like a pouty face(?)* making me emotional. HEY JUSTIN YOU WERENT A COWARD YOU WERE A CHILD! 18! Nobody expects an 18 year old to save the world’ Brian tells Justin how to get even ‘now that is a good advice. Im starting to realize that every advice he has, has something to do with education. Aw Brian is upset because his blondie is upset. SEE?! A COUPLE!’
I am so intrigued by your brother's life back home.
And yes, Justin being friends with a drag queen. I know we don't want to spoil anything about this for Brother but at some point you must tell him that Randy watches drag race.
The Fairy Gathering is real! My friend Jack went and has a fairy name and everything.
Your brother is right! Justin was a baby! He didn't owe anything to anyone after nearly being killed.
