well.

i dont think about her as much as i do other characters (hence the low amount of crosses)

but

she is a terrifyingly well-written antagonist, you can feel how persuasive and manipulative she is and understand how she doomed her crew the way she did. her design elements paralleling ishmael is also neat.

i also really enjoy the way they adapted her from the original moby dick's ahab.

that being said i fucking hate this bitchass gaslighting granny nastie.

your ocs have such an interesting concept thats sick as hell... have you come up with why and how Kailin was isekaied yet? And are the animals they're accompanied by like their partners or alternate forms or something?

also, how did you conduct research on this (speaking as another chinese person whos attempted to research cultural background stuff and not come up with much genuine info)? Was this all already in your head?

By the way, I really like the designs. Don't be anxious about them I think they're really pretty

more rambling under the cut

i have, actually, thought of how kailin got isekai'd (it was qingyuan who dragged him up to the heavens via some kinda zodiacal portal im still figuring the mechanics of). they land in the eastern division of the sky (so, where the azure dragon resides) and the plot goes from there :)

qingyuan's dragon is actually her sword! it was kinda inspired by the dragon staff from xi you ji, i just thought it was dope as hell. its called Chun Xing (春星), but because in dragon form its grumpy as fuck, its nicknamed Xingxing (悻悻)

meanwhile the qilin accompanying kailin in the image is called Xun (迅) (very creative, i know). he's a sorta guardian for him, because of Plot and Backstory reasons. that and demons are dangerous and kailin barely has combat experience so he's gotta have some backup there.

(disclaimer, my mandarin skills are pretty subpar because i rarely spoke it and lost my skills over the years, if theres any native speakers who find any mistakes in here with the names and such please let me know ;;)

as for research, i did some epic wikipedia quests and bought some chinese mythology books :]

xiran jay zhao's channel also helped a ton!! especially regarding certain aspects of chinese culture that i never thought much about before.

also ngl, the five phases part was kinda hard to understand at first, but after i started connecting its philosophy with stuff my family practiced, it made a lot more sense to me, though im still learning as i go along.

the rest was sorta gleaned from my family's culture and practices, and i started paying a lot more attention to the festivals and such, though again we're diaspora so its been kinda mixed in with our country's culture.

Fiber arts tumblr is the only place I can say "I'm not selling this for any less than $200" where people are more likely to go "oh. yeah 😔" than just straight up balk at the idea of spending hundreds of dollars on a tiny 5 inch plushie (that has 4 different colors) (handmade without a pattern and nothing else like it on the market) (atypical design) (took at least 6 hours)
