My personal headcanon for Bluepulse is that Jaime is the one who really got Bart into music.

Barts never really listened to any music because of how messed up the future is (and if he has a feel like it would’ve been from one scratchy cd he would play on a Walkman or something). But when Bart goes back to the past, he’s met with a whole new world with millions of song, artists and genres.

I feel like Jaime would love listening to music, I could see him just having music playing 24/7 in his room and he would love to listen to it while skateboarding. In my opinion, his taste would be more R&B and indie, like just very chill songs and artists (I could see him loving Tame Impala and Tyler the Creator). He would also listen to Spanish music, probably more of the older stuff that his parents like!

I could see Bart coming over one day and just hearing a really nice song, probably something indie with a fast beat, and he’s just totally obsessed. And of course Jaime is so happy that he can FINALLY share his music with someone, ESPECIALLY because it Bart! Jaime would make Bart playlists and maybe even an ACTUAL mixtape (that would be so cute if he legit burned a CD for him).

AND IMAGINE THEM GOING TO A CONCERT TOGETHER??? Please the way my brain is so hooked on this idea now I’m like…. What if I wrote a one shot…..

The way every minor Zetaflash interaction/HC has me in a chokehold is becoming concerning

Like, in S3, the shot where it looked like they were holding hands?? Didn't stop thinking about it for weeks

Ed wanting to save Bart first in the pit? Didn't stop thinking about it for months

Chapter 8 of your fic and the mention that Bart is staying at Ed's? It will never ever leave my brain again

i understand this at a spiritual level because u know what has been haunting my mind for the past month is that scene where Eduardo decides to join the Outsiders. like…. listen-

when i first watched it the panning to Bart and Virgil’s hug scene was suspicious to me (bare in mind we didn’t get any blatantly clear type of confirmation at that point about Bart or Ed being gay and Zetaflash was a very new thing that was a result of the Illusion of Control episode !! this was all processed in a very slow like live slug reaction to footage type of way that i was going through LMFAO moving on sorry ) but not anything where i was like 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 like i was convinced enough with eds whole “for the kids and noahfence no one knows u virgil and the others r all nepo kids” reasoning like fair enough

and then we got all those alluded to confirmations and additional interactions (barry + bart + ed scene !!! ed going to bart in the pit scene !!! letting it sink that ed was there for joan’s funeral !!! etc) and then the bombshell pre-season 4 bart is gay confirmation (literally revolutionary i’m sorry) and it all clicked

and now whenever i rewatch that episode i’m like…. was our boy fr out here being jealous LOL because generally i really try not to do the whole “the characters whole thing is just being part of the ship” because i find it very irritating for a lot of other ships, bluepulse especially ! don’t get me wrong there’s a lot of mind blowing content out there, but there’s some stuff that has also just not been it. And for zetaflash it doesn’t help that their scenes r very minimal, so i take any individual development of ed that i can get.

that being said his S3 development strongly involves the outsiders, and i just really can’t see the purpose of that scene of virgil and bart’s hug being randomly included EXACTLY in the moment we see Eduardo making his decision and reacting to it, like what else am i supposed to make of it 😭😭😭

and i keep seeing so many discourses about it and i rarely see people having anything to properly counter that it wasn’t about ed being jealous (which i’m sorry but that’s just great stuff).

So basically that scene has been plaguing me for the past month and I am obsessed with that tiny zetaflash detail and i understand ur suffering we r in this together fam

More Soft Bluepulse because someone has to keep this ship afloat even though we're stranded in the middle of the Pacific and there are sharks and albatrosses everywhere oh no.

So Bart came from the future and while he has every intent on being a hero in the current timeline as Impulse. Jaime still has dreams of college. He worries about doing well with school juggling being in Young Justice/The Outsiders but he still gets a lot of help and support!

Bart may not be the best study buddy because sitting down and focusing is hard. But he's great at helping Jaime with flashcards and in turn Jaime helps Bart get back on track with a lot of the schooling he's missed.

Jaime keeps what he wants to study generally a secret. It isn't until Bart sees Jaime just decompressing and mindlessly scrolling through Tik Toks of dental videos that he put two and two together. Also the fact Jaime will refuse to be intimate at night with Bart unless Jaime can tell he's brushed his teeth and used mouthwash.

So Season 3 exists.. yeah.. so here's how I'm addressing that. Jaime is bisexual and while Bart is very happy to see Jaime and Traci together. Jaime just kind of doesn't feel right with Traci. There definetly is a physical attraction there. But emotionally Jaime feels really confused about the situation.

Khaji Da actually helps him overcome the confusion. In the way that only a genderless alien superweapon can "Jaime Reyes, your brain emits dopamine and norepinephrine when you look at Traci. But when you look at Bart, your brain emits a very large amount of oxytocin that you don't get when you look at Traci. Use this information as you will."

Ever since the outsiders moved to Los Angeles, both Bart and Jaime have different feelings about the city. While Jaime is happy to show Bart more high-quality authentic Mexican food. It's just different than what he's used to back home.

Bart is just like hot boyfriend + good food = heaven.

While Bart is somewhat more tolerant of the cold. When it gets to be less than 70° (or 21° for my non-us readers) Jaime busts out the heavy jackets. Bart wanted to go to the beach one day when it was that temperature and Jaime said abso-freaking-loutely-not.

Jaime really cares about his family a lot and anything he gets extra in terms of money from his hero work he sends either to his parents or his Abuela in Mexico City. Hence why if Bart is paying for the date, he's going all-out. If Jaime is paying, they're probably getting food door dashed, watching a movie, and doing the do.

When Bart begins to annoy Jaime, Jaime will casually bring up how hot Nightwing and Superboy are. This always makes Bart super jealous but quiets him down. When Jaime takes it too far and Bart begins to sulk Jaime will turn around plant lots of kisses on Jaime. Perks him up every time.

Jaime has mild depression in my HC. So one day when Jaime couldn't find the strength to rouse himself from bed, Khaji Da just took over. Khaji went to the kitchen, made some eggs and toast and poured some juice. And just ate all while looking silent and soulless.

When Bart realized what was going on, Khaji had told Bart it was to ensure Jaime doesn't starve and that Jaime doesn't have the strength to function for some reason. So Khaji is in control. "I do not seek to harm you, Bart Allen. I merely seek to ensure that my host, Jaime Reyes, has enough nutrients and energy to keep myself and him alive and functioning at an optimum level."

Bart hearing Khaji say that using Jaime's voice scared the crap out of him. But he knew Khaji was telling him the truth. This doesn't stop Bart from shaking Jaime and yelling Khaji to let him back out.

"Bart Allen, my host does love you. Very much so. I believe humans have a term called a 'soul mate'. Jaime Reyes sees you as such. But Jaime Reyes has a chemical imbalance in his brain. And he cannot care for himself at this time. I am merely stepping in to assist."

Bart just breaks down and cries. He doesn't cry as much as Jaime, but when he does he really truly means it. It's at that point Jaime broke through and took back over. Jaime was not thrilled with Khaji at all for admitting all of his feelings and for taking over. However Jaime was just happy to know Khaji's response was to try to comfort Bart.. in his own way.

I know I said Jaime has a caffeine sensitivity in my last HC. He's working on it! By the time outsiders became a thing Jaime can do exactly one tall Starbucks coffee with LOTS of cream and sugar. But he has to have it hot. He has to take it slow. Meanwhile, Bart guzzles more coffee than Tim and that's no joke.

Nine times out of ten Jaime's the big spoon. Although usually, they sleep/nap holding each other with Bart laying his head on Jaime's chest (Jaime has a very defined and strong chest)

Despite Jaime's religious dental practices, Jaime has the worse morning breath of the two and Bart teases Jaime constantly for it.

Jaime has a very hard time dealing with what happens in Bart's future. It takes a long while for them to feel comfortable being intimate with each other while fully naked.

They are very quiet about it and will deny it vehimently, but all of the Bats are HUGE Bluepulse shippers. Jaime confides in Dick all of the time and ocassionally even Bruce will give his two cents. While Tim helps Bart with confidence and being a little bit more calm around Jaime.

Despite popular belief, Bart is a much dancer than Jaime. Jaime just never bothered learning how to dance and would rather sing or play guitar than dance.

Bart.

Khaji Da would tell Jaime whether it’s a push or pull door before his host has the opportunity to make a fool of himself. Bart, on the other hand, doesn’t have the luxury of having an all-knowing alien AI fused to his spine.

Who doodles little hearts all over the desk with their initials inside them

Neither.

Jaime only carved his and Bart’s initials into the trunk of the tree in the Reyes backyard to get back at Milagro, and show her how dumb the whole thing was after she had carved hers and her boyfriend’s initials into the very same tree. (Ironically enough, Brenda and Paco’s initials are also carved into this tree, after they had teased Jaime about his and Bart’s being there, much in the same way Jaime had teased his sister).

Who starts the tickle fights

Jaime.

He loves hearing Bart laugh, especially when his boyfriend is feeling a little down, or under the weather, and tickling always accomplishes that goal. Once he gets Bart going, the forced laughter becomes genuine, and always helps to put Bart back in a better mood (along with the help of a family-sized bag of Chicken Whizees).

Who starts the pillow fights

Bart.

Jaime knows that if he started one, he’d only be berated by Khaji Da later. As it is, whenever Bart starts a pillow fight, it takes a lot of Jaime’s willpower to keep the scarab from going into full attack mode once he’s been smacked in the face a few times.

Who falls asleep last, watching the other with a small affectionate smile

Bart.

Because of his speedster metabolism, he doesn’t need a lot of sleep. A lot of times, while Jaime was still in dental school, Bart would find him asleep at his desk on top of a textbook, and would have to carry his exhausted boyfriend to bed. In the mornings, he would have to remind Jaime not to work himself so hard, and to take little breaks every now and then. Every time Bart sees Jaime actually taking his advice, and getting in a proper nap or full eight hours at night, it brings a smile to his face.

Who mistakes salt for sugar

Bart.

Again, this is one of those things Khaji Da would warm Jaime about. Despite how groggy and tired Jaime can be in the mornings, Khaji Da would tell him before Jaime ends up dumping salt in his coffee. Bart, on the other hand, has dumped nearly half a canister of salt into his coffee (the one cup Jaime limits him to each morning; Bart does NOT need the extra caffeine) mistaking it for sugar. And yes, he totally tried to play it off and pretend he DIDN’T, but Jaime knew, and had to force himself not to burst out laughing as Bart sat there and drank the entire cup, trying to hide his grimace of disgust.

Who lets the microwave play the loud beeping sound at 1am in the morning

Bart.

It’s not that he does it intentionally. Most of the time, he uses his speed to stop the microwave before it can go off and the wake Jaime. But sometimes, he gets a little... distracted by other things while waiting for his midnight snacks to heat, and then has to speed to the microwave when it goes off, hoping that he was quick enough and that he didn’t wake his boyfriend, who REALLY needs the sleep.

Who comes up with cheesy pick up lines

Bart.

This one really shouldn’t be a surprise. Bart likes to flirt with Jaime, and while Jaime rolls his eyes at Bart’s cheesy one-liners, he secretly loves that part of his boyfriend’s personality, and never wants him to stop.

Who rearranges the bookshelf in alphabetical order

Jaime.

Or more like Khaji Da. The bookshelf really only gets arranged whenever Jaime’s in a semi lucid state and he’s relying on the AI to help him stay conscious long enough to get his studying done. Sleep-deprived Jaime is fine with letting Khaji take control for simple tasks that he doesn’t have the energy for, and if rearranging the bookshelf makes the scarab happy, Jaime’s not going to complain.

Who licks the spoon when they’re baking brownies

Bart.

Jaime figures with his metabolism, Bart is pretty much immune to salmonella, so he doesn’t get too concerned whenever Bart asks to lick the spoon after they’ve baked something together.

Who buys candles for dinners even though there’s no special occasion

Jaime.

While Bart likes to be showy with his romantic gestures, Jaime’s love language falls under the category of being more subtle. Leaving little snacks where Bart can find them, or a new pad of blueprint paper on his boyfriend’s desk are Jaime’s way of showing affection. He also knows that Bart loves it when he cooks homemade meals, so on occasion, he’ll call up Mama Reyes for her famous paella recipe, and run down to the store to buy some candles and a bottle of wine to surprise his boyfriend with a romantic dinner.

Who draws little tattoos on the other with a pen

Bart.

He’s the more artistic one out of them, and he gets bored easily. He has a rubix cube he can play around with while Jaime’s studying, and when he solves it, he has Khaji reset it, but eventually solving the cube over and over again gets boring too. So, he resorts to decorating Jaime’s arms with little doodles, which Jaime doesn’t mind, as long as Bart doesn’t use sharpie, and he’s gentle, because it kind of tickles, and that can be distracting while he’s trying to focus.

Who comes home with a new souvenir magnet every time they go on vacation

Jaime.

Jaime likes to collect magnets from their travels and stick them to the fridge in their apartment once they get back from wherever they’ve been. His goal is to collect a magnet from every major city in the world. Bart knows this, and if a mission takes him somewhere Jaime’s never been before, he’ll always bring back a magnet for Jaime to add to his collection. Being that both of them are on the Justice League, with international missions, Jaime already has a pretty decent collection.

Bart, on the other hand, likes to collect hoodies. He always buys them in Jaime’s size, and makes his boyfriend wear them so that they smell like him before stealing them back. He also has a pretty sizable collection, in various colors from different cities around the world.

Who convinces the other to fill out those couple surveys in the back of magazines

Neither.

Cassie’s the one that usually convinces them to fill them out. She always forces Tim to answer the questions with her, and somehow always manages to rope the other couples on the Team into doing the same. Usually she and M’gann team up to accomplish this goal, and filling out the surveys becomes a team bonding exercise for everyone involved.

Gender Headcanon: I headcanon Cass as a cis woman in the same way that i am which is that she doesn't have very strong opinions about gender but she does have strong opinions about being a lesbian so she considers herself a woman based on that. (yes im aware NB lesbians can exist but thats how i conceptualize my gender and i HC her the same way)

A ship I have with said character: hmmm i actually don't have a lot of strong shipping opinions for cass one way or the other (in terms of things i ship or things i don't ship)

A random headcanon: i have a lot for cass trying 2 think of one i haven't said before... hmm i do like 'cass uses ASL' and not in the stupid 'oh its less like a 'real' language thing' way (which is ableist as hell) but b/c i like kind of subtly retconning the part where she gets her brain mentally re-written without her consent to be verbal so i imagine her starting with ASL b/c i think she would have an easier time mimicking motions and gestures (which we have seen her mimic in canon effortlessly) than she would spoken words (which we have seen her grapple with)

A NOTP I have with said character: bluepulse just b/c back when i was trying to find fic w/ jaime when i just got into DC comics i kept seeing angst stuff like Jaime is expected to be apologizing for what evil future blue beetle did when like. that wasn't him. or bart has angst about what evil future blue beetle did. so that put me off it

A random headcanon: i think jaime would have a hard time retiring from being blue beetle b/c khaji became his buddy when living in his spine... and if he keeps up being blue beetle for a while (with khaji still in his spine) that could wind up being a significant portion of his life with his little alien buddy. i think it would be discombobulating and distressing to lose khaji. this is not to say i think he would never retire i just think it'd take him time to get used to the idea (and he's probably want to have the next blue beetle picked out so khaji isn't stuck with a jerk human)

Uhhhh well being honest, saying it's wrong it's indeed a little bitchy, bc it's a headcanon, and for me hc are what u want them to be, either possible or not, but i get ur point and i don't take it personal so don't worry. I wasn't aware of the comics' heights, honestly, that hc started bc someone around was saying that Bart was small for being 5'8 and i was like "wtf dude that's tall" then i realized that's tall for me, a latina, bc latinos are generally... shorter that americans. Our average heights are a few inches below yours (like 5'3 for women and 5'6 for men idk) That's when i remembered that Jaime's latino, so... yeah... i made him average for the sake of my cute headcanon.

You know what I'm proud of? That this fandom doesn't sexualize Jaime Reyes, like I see so many characters of Mexican or Latino descent being sexualized but not the YJ fandom. We recognize that Jaime is a giant awkward nerd who probably waits till marriage to have sex (my own hc sorry)

Oh man, I hear that. I’m really glad that hasn’t happened too much to Jaime that I’ve seen. (I usually stick to reading Bluepulse, Bluepulse OT3, or Scarab Love for the ships with Jaime, so I’m not sure how he gets handled in other ships.) I’ve heard nightmare stories about other fandoms and how portions of them handle Mexican/Latinx/Chicanx characters.

Jaime is absolutely a sweet and awkward nerd who is about as likely to jump into a full-blown relationship overnight as Lex Luthor is to spontaneously sprout long luxurious hair down to his butt. That is to say: Not very.

I can definitely see where the idea that he would wait to have sex until marriage would come from. I’ll admit that I see him as demisexual and panromantic, so I’m pretty sure for a lot of his life the idea of sex amounted to: “…What? …Why??? I have better things to do…” (So that’d probably make it more of a non-issue for him than most who aren’t ace-spectrum.)

You dislike bluepulse? Not going to give you hate but just curious why. I'm not really a hardcore shipper but I ended up liking the ship because of all the fics and hcs. Very interested on your thoughts on it.

I did ship bluepulse in the very early days, when there wasn’t a name for the ship. But I quickly grew against it for a few reasons.

One was Bart’s age. Bluepulse started around when Satisfaction aired, and it took a while before Weisman answered about how old Impulse was. Everyone initially assumed Bart was 15, but then it turned out he was 12/13, when Jaime was 16 and would turn 17 that year, so the age gap was the first thing to turn me off.

Then as I saw more and more bluepulse in the Jaime tag, I grew to hate it. It seemed to be everywhere, and coupled with a lot of cringy tropes. A lot of the bluepulse material I found sacrificed Khaji Da’s characterization for the sake of the ship. Everything I loved about Jaime and his story seemed to be twisted to shack him up with Bart. And because it ended up being so prevalent to the point that people insist it’s canon, it went from something I didn’t like but could avoid to something that felt a bit in my face. (I tend to be a bit petty in that people shoving things in my face is a guaranteed way to make me dislike it more).

I’m fine with, and supportive of, Jaime and Bart being friends. And there probably are some excellent bluepulse fics out there. But it’s not something I’m going to read. And I’m really annoyed at everyone insisting that Weisman and Vietti are going to make it canon or have to, otherwise they are homophobic for not supporting a ship.

This is part of the reason I’m very selective when reading YJ fics dealing with Jaime.

Bluepulse Video Game HC

So I’ve never posted a hc before, but I was playing guitar hero the other day and couldn’t help thinking about Bart and Jaime playing it and this just popped into my head. Sooo yeah

- Jaime and Bart have played video games together before, but never guitar hero

- usually when they play anything, Bart wins because his speed makes up for things despite him being the less experienced player

- sometimes he lets Jaime win though, to be nice

- one day they’re sitting in Jaime’s room when Bart complains that he’s bored

- Jaime suggests they play a video game

- Bart doesn’t want to play a video game because they’ve already played everything Jaime has

- Jaime gets this look on his face and Bart knows he’s in for a surprise

- Jaime just so happens to have two wii guitars in his closet

- he hasn’t played guitar hero in awhile because it’s kind of an old game and he’s already beat the campaign

- plus he doesn’t think Bart will know any of the songs, because he himself doesn’t even know half of them

- once the game is loaded, Jaime explains how to play

- Bart is enthusiastic about trying something new

- they fight over who gets to be guitar and who gets to be bass

- once Bart turns his puppy dog eyes on Jaime, Jaime gets stuck being bass

- Jaime sets his difficulty on hard

- Bart sets his on expert

- “Cariño, you’ve never played. Why do you have it on expert?”

- “well, I beat you at everything else, so I figure it can’t be that hard”

- Jaime just gives him the look

- because he’s a nice boyfriend, Jaime lets Bart pick the first song

- he picks Rock You Like A Hurricane by the Scorpions

- “grandpa Barry plays this at the house sometimes”

- so Bart knows it

- when the song starts Bart hits the buttons as soon as the notes come on screen

- “you have to time them right” Jaime tries to explain it better

- “it’s too slow!”

- Jaime sighs

- he pauses it and goes to the cheats menu to put in hyperdrive for Bart

- they start the song over

- the speed is an improvement, but it’s still too slow

- “there’s nothing else I can do about it, Cariño. You’ll just have to wait.”

- Bart’s screen honestly looks so fast to Jaime it makes him want to throw up

- but Bart seems to actually be having fun

- so Jaime has fun too

- Jaime gets a 82%

- Bart gets a 97%

- “aww, I missed a note!”

- Jaime glares at him because really? It’s Bart’s first time at this and he only missed one note?

- the first time Jaime played, he failed

- and the second and the third time

- Jaime picks the next song

- it’s Every Rose Has Its Thorn by Poison

- Jaime’s dad plays old Poison albums out in his auto shop where Jaime helps out sometimes

- so he knows all of their songs

- this time Bart gets 100%

- Jaime gets a 93%

- they play for hours

- Bart’s got this little head-banging jump-hop thing going on that Jaime finds dorky and adorable

- Bart’s definitely having a good time

- they play through all of the songs Jaime knows

- Bart never scores lower than a 97%

- Jaime just hangs his head in defeat

- next time they play Jaime demands that he’s guitar since Bart got it this time

- Bart agrees, but next time he’s playing it on lefty mode, so he has a challenge

- Jaime calla him a dork and pulls him in for a kiss

- because despite losing, he’s glad that Bart had a good time

- on their next mission, Bart starts singing Final Countdown by Europe while Tim is trying to defuse a bomb

- Jaime gives him the look because “wow Bart, that was in really poor taste”

- but when no one’s looking, he mimes playing air guitar at Bart, who bursts into giggles

- they’re both on temporary probation now because “bomb diffusing is no laughing matter!”

- while on probation, they go to Jaime’s house to play more guitar hero
