In order to achieve positive results, one must work for them, not hope for them. https://www.quotenova.net/authors/bob-knight/xavkn7

The goal is to make practice more difficult, physically/mentally, than anything your players will face during a game. https://www.quotenova.net/authors/bob-knight/q2674a

Quote
If we don't force players to react to things, put them in tough situations, then it's our fault they can't react to them in games.

"...Bobby Knight is my coach"
Tumblr media
"The lord is my shepherd and Bobby Knight is my coach"
--Printed on signs created by indignant IU student body, marching to protest Coach Bob Knight's treatment from the school's administration following allegations he choked one of his own players, Neil Reed
In John Feinstein's book, Season on the Brink, he describes Bobby Knight's penchant for holding campus-wide forums that included questions he fielded from the student body. Examples:
Q: Coach Knight, how do you feel about the NCAA's new policies on drug testing?
A: If I had my way, they'd drug test all you sons-of-bitches, not just the players.
Q (from a female): Coach Knight, what do I have to do to become an equipment manager for the team?
A: Change your gender.
This guy has long been my favorite coach in all of sports. The fact that I read an entire John Feinstein book not related to golf should be testament to that. I have zero connection to him at all--I'm not from Indiana or Texas, no-one in my family went to IU or Texas Tech, and I only played basketball for a few years, poorly. My first exposure to him was the media coverage of the controversy that eventually led to his oust in the year 2000, replete with images of him throwing chairs, insulting reporters, and generally alternating between being either a blunt, plainspoken smartass or terrifying rageaholic (for the best examples of the former, I strongly recommend watching this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Onfzet1xxs [#3 occurred in 1995 in Boise, ID]).
Fortunately, most of the coverage of Knight tempered his histrionics with his more laudable qualities. This was a coach who was never once accused of NCAA violations, required his players to attend and pass their classes to play on his team and fielded NCAA-high graduation rates (all but four of his four-year players graduated throughout his 43 year coaching career). Then, you had his on-court success: 3 time national champion, 1984 Olympic gold medalist, and 11 time Big Ten Conference champion, the major coaching awards, the coaching tree that includes Coach K, an overall D-1 record of 902-371, etc.
What struck me is Bobby Knight's focus on integrity. Most of his problems happened when he thought he was in the right and was acting accordingly. He was an asshole to reporters because he wasn't willing to present a facade. He was an asshole to referees because he perceived injustice. This was a guy who cared about justice and about what was right and about making things fair. I loved him for it. Still do. He did colossally dumb things, sometimes, but for mostly the right reasons (that said, choking a player and the stuff he said in that Connie Chung interview [please don't look it up] stand out as particularly indefensible).
So naturally after sorting through the detritus and proclaiming myself a Bobby Knight supporter, one of the flock so to speak, I naturally imagined what it would be like to play for him. If I would even enjoy it, in that hypothetical universe where I was born ten years earlier and had any kind of athletic ability at all that would've been beneficial to the guy. I think I would hate it as I was going through it, while he pushed his players to the absolute brink of their physical and mental strength. I think the regimented boundaries and emphasis on what was fair and what was right would've really been enriching. Coach Knight always described himself as an educator and I agree: he prepared his players for life.
I miss having Bobby Knight around. When Joe Paterno's scandal hit, beyond the shock and horror of what transpired and the later revelation through the Freeh report that Paterno was involved in the coverup, I thought, "That would've never, NEVER happened in a Bobby Knight program."
Because that's really what we want. We want a leader we can count on, consistently, who values integrity. Not some icon who's deified just because of his successes and who gave fifty years of stock quotes to reporters like, "Success without honor is an unseasoned dish; it will satisfy your hunger, but it won't taste good." Joe Paterno was a man who cared more about his legacy than justice.
Give me the guy who said this: "When my time on earth is gone, and my activities here are passed, I want they bury me upside down, and my critics can kiss my ass."
