So like... where the hell is the Tears of the Kingdom version of all this neat Rito concept art? I want crisp drawing references of Tulin, the older versions of Kass's daughters and Penn. The TOTK artbook released a while ago, somebody should probably get on that

Update: So uh... I've just found out that the TOTK art book hasn't had an English translation yet....

Fic Promo: Song of a Champion
Now that @spacelemon has put up that amazing promo vid of the Mipha's Grace mod, it feels like a good time to do a little self-promo of my own, for something that I promise is related (otherwise I wouldn't be mentioning the vid; I am doing so in hopes of helping to get more eyeballs on it): a fic I've been writing since 2022, that is both inspired by and based on the mod. I've been lucky enough to have been allowed to play early versions of it, and was inspired to write a fic that retells BOTW with Mipha as the lead, taking cues from many plot points and armor redesigns present in the mod. If that's not enough to entice you, then please read on for my list of things that you might enjoy about this fic!
It's about Mipha Judging by the results of my poll, a lot of you like reading about Mipha! I've written a LOT about her over the past few years, but this is my most in-depth exploration of her yet. It's entirely centered on her, delving deep into her thoughts and feelings and exploring the myriad aspects of her personality as we follow her journey. Instead of Link waking up on the Great Plateau without his memories and being handed the responsibility of saving Hyrule, it's Mipha who must walk this path; unlike in the base game, she's not a fridged love interest for Link to be sad about, she's an active heroine in her own right with a monumental task ahead of her from the moment she wakes up, not to mention a lot of questions. How did she get there? Can she do this? What--and who--has she forgotten in her century-long slumber? How will she find her way in this strange new world she awakens to? What kind of bonds will she forge with the people she meets along her way? All these and more are tackled in great depth as she goes on her adventure, setting out with, initially, little more than her own courage, determination, and compassion. I've been told by many people that I write their favorite Mipha, and though this isn't my first time giving her a starring role, I fully believe this is my best character work for her so far. I've given her so much to do and act on and react to, exploring her rich inner life and personality and character FAR beyond just shipping stuff, and developed a lot of really fun friendships for her and gone heavy on her familial relationships as well. There is miphlink, but it's only one aspect, and Mipha herself is the shining star at the heart of everything.
2. It takes inspiration from Wind Waker Mainly, the concept of a character who is not the chosen one stepping up and proving themselves worthy and going on to save Hyrule. If you, like me, enjoyed that aspect of Wind Waker, then you'll like this story!
3. It plays with the lore in fun ways Do you like the older bits of lore from pre-Skyward Sword games? Like the Golden Goddesses and other deities? Then you'll like the bits of it I've weaved in!
4. It treats the NPCs with care, love, and nuance One of the things I'm proudest of about this story, that I've gotten praise from others for, is how the various NPCs are written. I've treated them all like people in their own right, who all have their own rich inner lives, schedules, interests, priorities, and feelings that don't revolve around the protagonist. Mipha befriends most of them, yes, but that's because she treats them with compassion and kindness too. Nobody is shallow here, I've gone to great pains to illustrate a world filled with people all living their own lives that intersect with Mipha's journey in various ways, and allowed people to just be human and make mistakes and have doubts but ultimately just be people. There's a lot of emphasis on Mipha's relationships with her family, and I've certainly won praise for my depiction of these dynamics, but also a ton of friendships being formed and explored, and people have told me that I made certain characters interesting and likable to them where the game failed to do so.
5. It has awesome fight scenes BOTW is a game with a lot of combat, so anyone novelizing it better be good at writing that kind of scene. Fortunately, I am! This is an action-packed story, not just for its own sake, but to show the dangerous world Mipha is traveling through and the challenges she has to face as she ventures into each Divine Beast and cleanses them of their respective Blights. I write really fast-paced action that also shows the characters' mindsets while fighting, and strikes a balance between showing off their strengths and that they're up to the challenge, while also respecting their opponents and demonstrating why the Champions of a hundred years ago fell to these things, why NPCs fear certain monsters. And speaking of respecting opponents, I've taken stuff from Age of Calamity as well as some of my own inventions, to beef up the boss fights, a certain area, and make every Divine Beast threatening (we all know how scary Medoh wasn't in-game).
6. It has beautiful prose/descriptions But you don't have to just take my word for it! Here's a sample from the rough draft of chapter 42!
Shards of light drifted across her floor, leaves caught in the current of clouds flowing over the moon. Mipha took a moment to watch them before closing the door behind herself. The water in her sleeping pool murmured a melody of rest and relaxation after a long day, calling her to it, but she ignored it for now. She’d done all her preparations for tomorrow, downed a warm elixir crafted from a few hearty lizards, and now only one thing remained to do before going to bed. It wasn’t a need, as the other tasks had been, but a want. Nothing wrong with that. She crossed the room to the old chest that lay tucked beneath her window, opening the lid with a whining creak from the aged hinges. A folded length of fabric the color of spilt starlight lay atop the item she sought; Mipha moved it aside. Her breath catching, she withdrew the armor beneath and held it up to the softly swaying illumination of the moon outside and the luminous stone lamps within.
All in all, I think this fic is some of my best work, and shouldn't be missed if you're a Mipha fan like I am (she is my favorite Zora, so if it's okay I'd like to use this as a belated submission for that Zora May prompt). She truly is the star of the show, with so much to offer as a lead character, moving through a world treated with depth and care. If you're in the market for a BOTW retelling that does something different, something no other retelling has done, and does it really well, then give it a chance! You can read it here on AO3. :3

Rito Village Main Quest: Boarding Vah Medoh!
Okay, so, while this post will not go over the dungeon itself, as that will be saved for another day. I will be going over the quest leading up to Vah Medoh, and some things that happen after it. And for anyone wondering why I decided to start with Vah Medoh, it's mainly because it's the one I have the most ideas for! Now let's jump straight into it!
Again! I know people reading this probably already know, but everything written here is my AU/rewrite! Unless stated otherwise, none of this is canon to Breath of the Wild, outside of locations! (Excluding dungeons, minus the Divine Beasts)
So rather than the Hebra Divine Beast/Dungeon quest, starting at Rito Village, it will start at Tabantha Hills (or on the path between Piper Ridge and the Rayne Highlands if you're coming from that direction) where you will encounter Tulin for the first time.
During this encounter Link will fight off some monsters that were attacking Tulin, with Tulin dealing the final shot on whichever enemy is left. Afterwards Tulin will explain that he's trying to learn to fight to be like his dad and help protect his village.
This conversation will transition into a cutscene where the Calamity spews out malice that looks like it's going to hit them.
If Link has Mipha's Grace, then after the Malie hits him and Tulin, he will use Mipha's Grace on Tulin, while taking damage himself. If Link has Daruk's Protection, then he will activate it and use it to protect himself and Tulin. If Link has neither then both get hit and nothing else happens.
After the Malice is spewed, Teba will fly in as one last monster will appear (If Link has Urbosa's Fury then he will use that on the monster, with Teba taking it out in one hit. If Link does not have Urbosa's Fury, then Teba will take out the monster with a bomb arrow, doing damage to Link if he does not have Daruk's Protection.) with Teba taking it out.
Teba will talk to Link and thank him for helping to protect his son before heading back to Rito Village. If it is between the hours 7 PM and 6 AM in game, then Tulin will ask his dad to let Link go with them, as to help him avoid the monsters that appear at night, fast traveling Link to Rito Village (This offer can be denied). If it is outside of those hours, then they will leave Link to walk to Rito Village himself.
Whichever path that is taken will still lead to the same basic outcome, with Link having to track down Teba after getting to Rito Village. (If the night path is chosen, then Tulin will have some extra dialogue on how it was fun to hang out with Link, and how he'd like to do it again sometime) If you talk to the village chief, after the normal dialogue when you have the divine beast quest started, they will mention an old tool they heard had been used by those that had constructed the Divine Beast, that was apparently hidden away in the Hebra region.
This item is completely optional, but does make Vah Medoh easier in this version. It's essentially the grappling hook from Wind Waker, and can be found inside a dungeon near Lake Kilsie, opposite of the Sturnida Secret Hot Springs. This dungeon would essentially be similar to the Wind Temple in TOTK, at least in puzzles, with a single boss/mini boss at the end where you get the grappling hook.
Outside of puzzles in Vah Medoh that will be discussed in its own post, the Grappling hook would be able to be used to grab items from afar, do minor damage to enemies (around 5 atk), and grab onto trees and allow Link to climb up it. There would be a distance limit, and it would use up stamina, but not as much as normal climbing.
Whether Link gets the grappling hook or not, events would continue from there similar to canon BOTW, Teba will be able to be found at the flight range. However, during this meeting, Link will gain the memory of his first time meeting Revali (I don't have too much of an idea for this, so for now it's pretty much the same as the canon one, just earlier on) after which, you'll do the training thing with Teba, and he'd offer to fly Link up to Vah Medoh. (If the player has gotten to Vah Medoh's altitude within the Hebra or Tabantha regions, Teba will also make an off hand remark about it probably being safer if he flies Link up.)
A mini Easter egg that, while difficult, could be found in this au is after shooting Vah Medoh's canons, if Link/the player manages to avoid getting hit while on Teba, then he will give Link either 10 normal arrows or 10 bomb arrows, depend on which ones lower. And will also offer Link a low level healing potion, if he leaves Vah Medoh mid dungeon while damaged. This will not happen of Teba takes any damage while aiding Link in shooting down the canons.
Another easter egg would be that, after the dungeon is complete, if Link has gone to Zora's domain and has only started the Vah Ruta quest, Teba will give Link 10 Shock arrows, saying “He'll probably need them where he's going.”
Anyways! That concludes the info dump for today! I hope you all have a wonderful day or night, and stay safe!

sry im crossed but i was playing botw and thinking about Link being pregnant with Mipha's baby after his whole slumber. Link experiences his first trimester in the Eldin region, pitching in there, assuming he felt hot all the time due to the VOLCANO that he was hanging out by instead of a pregnancy
Link heads towards Rito Village when he starts to show, and both Teba and Saki know that he's pregnant before he even realizes it himself. they probably don't wanna send Link up to vah medoh but they don't have a choice. insert link with a cute five/six month bump in his rito garments and worrying over Tulin bc his instincts are kicking in
Link spends his last trimester in the desert, traveling towards Gerudo Town in hopes of getting in and getting advice for the end of his pregnancy and delivery. But, despite his state, Link is still a voe and not allowed within Gerudo Town. Cue Link in that DELICIOUS vai disguise with a beautiful round belly. Riju is the one to finally convince Link to go to Zora's Domain, though Link stubbornly helps with the yiga clan and vah naboris despite his state bc he's the hero of hyrule he's fine! hes totally fine! even though theres definitely a little Zora baby about to burst him at the seams but he's fine!
now by the time Link does get to Zora's Domain hes totally overdue. his trip to the domain along the path takes twice as long at least, bc he still insists he can fight but its not. y'know. his best work. and he can't move that fast. when he FINALLY gets there, muzu doesn't believe that this knocked up little twunk could POSSIBLY be the same guy Mipha was head over heels for. and in his state, Link can't put on the Zora armor Mipha made him bc of his belly. luckily by this point he goes into labor, and despite the bullshit muzu is going on about, all the Zora help Link deliver. it definitely takes a bit, even with Link's strength, because it's a royal Zora due to Mipha's heritage so it's larger than average. when it's all said and done, Link is holding a cute (not-so) little Zora baby that looks JUST like Mipha. Then I imagine Sidon looking at Muzu like "my dad is NEVER gonna let you hear the end of this one lmfao"

Made a Harth and Teba bot too, had to show some love to them too.

The real reason they got rid of Kass and replaced Teba was because they realized that their combined Dad Power would've been way too powerful and Ganondorf would be instantly obliterated as soon as he so much as looked at Rito Village
#also because they realized kass wouldve been really cool as the sage of wind#and it wouldve been weird to have TWO potential sage candidates and still pick a 13 year old#botw kass#botw teba#totk#loz totk#mb's two am rambling

First of all, @thebardslastnote OOUUAAGH MY HEART, THANK YOU
Second of all, a crash course on what the heck you're seeing

Okay, so Tears of the Kingdom is a Legend of Zelda game that is a sequel to Breath of the Wild and it takes place after a 7 year time skip from the first game.

The Rito are a race of bird people introduced in Breath of the Wild (technically they're from a GameCube game, the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker where they looked more like humans, they got redesigned in Breath of the Wild) and their whole thing is archery.
(art source: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/hyrule-midgardia/a/rito-article)
The super plot relevant ones are

Revali: Introduced in Breath of the Wild, the greatest Rito warrior ever, died 100 years before the events of that game and appears as a ghost trapped inside this giant stone bird mech called Vah Medoh (long story)
Teba: Just a guy who helps the player in their quest in Rito Village during Breath of the Wild, became the new Rito Elder in Tears of the Kingdom
Tulin: Teba's son. Just a random kid NPC in Breath of the Wild, is now a teenager after the timeskip and becomes WAAAAY more important in Tears of the Kingdom.
Kass (Breath of the Wild) and Penn (Tears of the Kingdom) exist as the guy you frequently come across all over the game that leads into a series of sidequests. Every other named Rito character are just random NPCs.
The reason why Rubee looks the way that she does is that is because I'm referencing the art style of this other unrelated Legend of Zelda game because I drew her two days after that game was announced because I thought there would be Rito characters in that game. There was not.

They also kinda got this gender roles thing going on. (Quote taken from TV Tropes' Breath of the Wild character page). It's... not technically canon that women Rito can't become warriors? But all the female Rito NPCs are housewives or singers or merchants, while basically ALL OF THE MALE RITO aside from Kass (parrot guy with the accordion, a bard) and Penn (pelican guy, a newspaper reporter) are warriors. So some extrapolation is happening here.
So, like. That's why Rubee makes such a big deal about keeping her warrior exploits a secret. There's kinda a Mulan situation going on.

Sidenote, I took inspiration from Revali's concept art for Rubee's other outfit and so far NOBODY'S noticed. She was also a literal Robin Hood in her first version, but I just cut that bit out because it didn't mesh well with her new lore.
As for why I suddenly got obsessed with Nintendo bird people? Well, I recently started a new playthrough of Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and it reawakened a dormant hyperfixation from 2023.
I just think they're neat.

Okay, so first and foremost, I've said this before and I want to say it again, this project is in no way meant to be any sort of hate on Nintendo, BOTW, nor TOTK, both games are wonderful in their own right, and I love many other Nintendo games! So with that outta the way, let's get down to business!
[TW: Death, Apocalypse, famine, disease, bloodshed.]
Game Play Changes
Companion character
In every Zelda game (minus BOTW & TOTK), Link has a companion of some sort. Even in the newest title Echoes of Wisdom, Zelda gets a companion. I understand why they didn't in BOTW, but I'm a sucker for companions, so I decided that Wolf Link would be canon in this universe. Link wouldn't meet him right away, and he would be unable to speak, but I feel like he sorta fits with the theming overall.
Link would also be able to interact with Wolf Link, and other doggo's as well.
Malice
In this version of BOTW, Malice is going to do a bit more damage, than in the original game. Rather than just creating piles of Malice in the world, when Calamity Ganon shoots out the balls fo Malice, they would taint the land they hit, killing everything it touches and sleeping into the ground. It would also kill any animals/people while strengthening any monsters.
Heart Containers & Stamina Vessels
I would bring back heart pieces, but keep the stamina vessels. The way I would do this is by keeping the Stamina Vessels linked to the spirit orbs, but having heart pieces as a separate thing that would be found through exploration. Likely replacing many of the extra Koroks. (Yes, I would be lowering the amount of Koroks for the sake of mine, and everyone else's sanity) This would keep the heart piece system that every other Zelda game uses (minus BOTW & TOTK), while keeping a bit of the system that Nintendo had already put in.
Shrines & Mini Dungeons
Due to making heart pieces their own thing again, a lot of the shrines would become obsolete. So to make up for this, I would add in mini dungeons. These would kinda be like the one's in EoW, where the boss drops a heart piece, and would be mostly full of puzzles and traps, along with extra lore.
Main Story
My main gripe with the main story of Breath of the Wild is that, unlike every other Zelda game (minus TOTK) we don't really play through a connected story. Don't get me wrong, there is A story, but it's already happened, and the story that is in the present is disjointed and unconnected to itself.
I know that the story wasn't the "main" focus of the game, but I thought that being able to playing through the story was always better than just witnessing it. Plus even the memories which give 90% of the story kinda suck for their own reasons that I'll get into that in a different post.
I had a few ideas that I threw around, one of them being a civil war esq scenario that was inspired by Hyrule Warriors (which is cannon here), but I decided on a different idea.
The decided to look back at the apocalypse theming that Breath of the Wild has, and pulled from it, eventually deciding to use the Four horsemen of the Apocalypse as inspiration for the main story. With each race having to deal with one of the issues.
Disease with the Zora
Famine for the Gorons
Bloodshed in the Rito
And Conquest to the Gerudo
For the Zora, the Malice would've tainted the waters prior to the start of the game, and any Zora that was in the water at the time, or ate fish from the water ended up sick similar to how people are with Gloom and the mud in TOTK. This would've led to the quest in the area. Sidon would also be more involved in this quest, and would get a bit more character building, along with a few other characters. This would also introduce the fact that Zora can manipulate water.
In the Gorons, similar to the main game, Rudania would've been stomping around the mountain, but in this version, the machine would've blocked off the Gorons food source, and the Malice would've corrupted any other viable options. Again, this would lead to the main quest, and give more characters more time to develop.
The Rito would've been suffering from a constant barrage of attacks during their quest, one that had exhausted a many of their warriors, and killed more. The deaths would likely be more implied than explicitly told, but it would still be there. Tulin would also play a role in this quest than in cannon BOTW, this way we would actually know the kid exists, rather than him just popping out of thin air.
The Gerudo would be funding with the Hylian's (this may change for story reasons) due to reasons that will be explained in the post on this quest. During the quest we would get more lore about Riju, her mother, and the Gerudo in general.
I'm aware that conquest and bloodshed sound similar, but I will explain the differences in separate posts that I will dedicate to each race. This is because I don't want to load everything into one post, and I also want to give each part of the story the time it deserves.
I know that the way I've been talking about this makes it seem like there will be a dungeon order, but there wouldn't be. Link would still be able to go through the dungeons in any order they like, and it would even change the story in small ways when if they did.
Anyways, that's all for today folks! Hope you all have a wonderful day or night, and stay safe and hydrated y'all!

So I Don't Forget Again: A Breath of The Wild Fanfiction
Entry 238: Home
I swear I still feel it sometimes, feeling in my missing limbs. It’s so strange. And I’m scared. We should be safe now, but what if I need to fight again someday? Can I even still do that? I guess though, even if I was uninjured I’d be having some thoughts like this anyway, wondering what I’ll do next.
Purah and Robbie are looking into making me replacement body parts, but things like that are going to take a very, very long time, and my cooperation to make. It’s been good to see them again. It seems they are keen on getting Zelda’s help for the project. She says she’s still the princess of Hyrule and needs to look into rebuilding but… I hope she accepts. For so long she had been working for the protection on Hyrule, surely she could take a little break, just have fun with studying and tinkering with inventions. To just live for even a short time, not be back to work already, it just seems cruel.
Riju has so excitedly been telling me about her time here, never before had she left the town so being outside the desert has been amazing. She loves all the greenery, and she’s become very fast friends with everyone, listening to all their stories. Her and Sidon have taken to learning Hateno cooking and have insisted on making my meals for me. There have been a few accidents in the kitchen mostly trying to make fusions of Hateno, Gerudo, and Zora cuisine and the ingredients not agreeing with one another whether it be taste wise or… surprising explosiveness. Riju really likes Sidon, she asks me a lot about him, mostly about our relationship. She thinks we make for a good pair. She’s still learning the Hylian way from Calisa but still hopes I might be able to teach her a few things. Sidon has been teaching her as well using the moving moments in the slate as a guide, she’s also started learning the Zora ways from him.
Calisa, Kass, and the Leathersmith have been getting along well. The Leathersmith always visits me at the late evening for tea, usually Kass, Calisa and sometimes others join, we always trade stories, they can be about anything really, to exciting battles, or the latest gossip. We’ve gotten to try lots of different teas and treats. Riju has been insisting that she teach Sidon how to make desserts for me and they usually have me try them then. It’s nice how we get so engrossed in each other’s stories, I really like it when we have to stop in the middle of a story and seeing everyone getting playfully upset about it and having to excitedly wait for tomorrow!
Yunobo and Riju have been sticking close, both unfamiliar with the area. The town has been showing them around and even teaching them farm work. Yunobo likes seeing all the animals and insects around, there are so many more here than back on Death Mountain. The kids have really taken a shine to him, well everyone really but especially him, I think they can tell how gentle he is and like how animals are more willing to approach him than them.
Teba visits on occasion, he returns home often to make sure everyone is safe, well fed and to keep them informed of my condition. He’s taken to visiting all the towns actually, making sure they are all fine, the warriors are being well cared for and informing others of my condition, it’s because of him acting as messenger that Sidon, Riju and others are able to stay here as long as they have. He’s surprised by how unarmed many places are, like Hateno. Even in times of peace people should be able to fend for themselves and be able to hunt. He even once told me that as soon as I recover I need to start teaching the people of Hateno how to defend themselves. He has no idea how I could have even been able to bring myself to leave knowing they don’t know how to fight. I was confused till he told me, that I’m a true warrior, and nothing other than death can keep a true warrior from fighting, protecting those who need it. He believes I can still fight and teach. He even asked if when I was feeling up for it, if we could spar again.
There’s also Kass. He’s been traveling with Teba as well. He’s been writing songs nonstop. Songs of me, and Sidon, and Riju, and Teba, and Yunobo, and Calisa, and us working together to save Hyrule. When he found me before battle he had actually wanted to see me outside of my absence from Hyrule. He had written a song about Rivali, unfortunately, unlike the others he as not able to find a new story about him and simply wrote one about our meeting. He had also found something. Looking through his old things to make space, he ended up looking through his Master’s things and found something he thought I should have. More frozen moments of them, the Champions, like our group one they’re in frames like a fancy portrait or painting. There was one of Mipha with a young Sidon, he’s so tiny. There was another of me and Daruk, him laughing and giving me that firm back pat, that was a bit too close to the edge of a cliff for my liking. Another of Rivali and Zelda chatting as I stood by. Urbosa and Daruk sharing a meal. I ended up bringing out the one Kass had given me before. The frozen moment of me, and Mipha, and Dahruk, and Urbosa, and Rivali, and Zelda. He was pulling us into a group hug of sorts right as the moment was taken, catching many of us off guard. Zelda remembers all these moments.
She remembers a lot of things, like how when she was close enough by for me to still be able to protect her I’d stick closely to Dahruk, though I never talked, he seemed to be able to understand me without words, or how Rivali and I always got into silly competitions with one another over the pettiest of things, well more so Rivali trying to bait me into such, or how Mipha would often scold me for getting myself into danger and how kids seemed to like me despite me seeming to be my usual distant self, I was even able to win over the distrustful Sidon, he seemed to like everyone but me, but I was able to win him over eventually. That last story in particular embarrassed Sidon to no end.
It feels so strange to be around her. It’s uncomfortable. She knows the knight, the chosen hero, not me. Unlike everyone else, even if they had passing knowledge of that person, she very clearly remembers him, how cold and distant and quite he was. I hate how she compares that person to me. I don’t want to be that, not anymore. I really don’t like how she tries to explain how even back then I still showed some warmth like now. It’s just…
It all feels like a bit too much for me.
I still haven’t left the bed, but I think I should be able to soon. I can at least stick my head out the window beside the bed. I like looking out to the scenery, the snow has been beginning to pile up, the little lake in the yard has frozen over, but the rivers and such down below still move. Maybe it’s for the best I stay in bed, at least it’s warm here, and I always have plenty of company.
And it seems like I’m about to get more, a certain fish prince and chief waving to me from outside with a basket full of ingredients. So it’ll be the evening tea time soon.
I think I won’t warn them about the giant capybara attempting to get a snack from their basket.
