we need to gatekeep naming animals mochi and not even just from white ppl. also asams (esp ones who aren't japanese) who think its a cute asian thing to name their dog. from now on youre only allowed to name your pet mochi if youre eating mochi like that and not on your froyo or w/e like the normal red bean stuff. only real mochiheads allowed

Okay so, I watched the first two episodes of Hazbin and it's just...really boring? Like, I was half zoned out the entire time. There were only four characters I could stand and half the songs sucked. Also Katie Killjoy is just Brandon Rogers. Dear God I thought they'd try to hide it at least a little. Anyway it bored me to sheer exhaustion but it didn't fill me with rage like I thought it would
It has its moments, but yeah, for the most part it oscilates between bad and kind of boring and unimpressive.

The Monstrous Kind review
Tumblr media
5/5 stars Recommended if you like: historical fantasy, undead creatures, mystery
Big thanks to Netgalley, Delacorte Press, and the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This book is set in an interesting alternate history version of England somewhere in the 1800s or early 1900s. There's talk of lords and of debuting and of propriety, but there's also a mist obscuring a good portion of the country and which turns most who enter it into Phantoms -- undead, bloodthirsty creatures. I enjoyed learning about the world and the way it worked. The manor houses were interesting, and I liked the way they were organized using 'bloody' terms. The immunity was also interesting to me and it's definitely used as one of those things the manor lords use to 'protect' everyday people but also something they lord (pun intended, lol) over them and use it as their source power.
I'm pretty sure the Phantoms are supposed to be zombies but I actually didn't mind them. It seems like the rot takes them over and leaves them with white eyes and white mycelium-like marks over their body, but there's no decomposition or anything. The Phantoms survive (if it can be called that) in the mist and can't last very long if they leave it. The fires and gas lamps lit around the border keep them out, though sometimes they break through and will attack people and eat them. Guns called ghostslayers kill the Phantoms, but it's never explained if the guns have special bullets or just a special name. I would've liked to learn more about the Phantoms. I know they're commonplace for the characters since they've been around for at least 200 years now, but as a reader I would've liked a more in-depth view of them.
Merrick is the younger daughter of the Manor Lord of Sussex. The inheritance of a manor house is not strictly based on birth order, and women can inherit just as much as men can. Merrick's father informed her she would never be a Manor Lord, hence why she fled to New London in search of a suitor. If she isn't the protector of Sussex, then she needs to ensure their family line continues so there can still be a Sussex. Despite this setback, Merrick still cares deeply for her family and for Sussex, and is immediately interested in investigating the weird goings-on at the mist border. She definitely tries her best, but sometimes she comes across as being naive about people and the world they live in. As someone brought up as a manor lord's daughter, she's not very good with strategy or mind games, two things the other manor lords are very good at. Likewise, she has a tendency to trust and mistrust the wrong people, though this could be a side effect of being isolated. As mentioned though, she does have a deep care for the people of her province and for her family, and genuinely wants what's best for them. She's able to consider that the way things have been running might not be the right way, and also reconsiders the manor hierarchy. I enjoyed reading from Merrick's POV and following on her journey to discover what's gone wrong in Sussex.
To be honest, I don't really see a lot that recommends her sister for the position over Merrick. Sure Merrick can be emotionally hotheaded, but her sister's frightfulness and seeming lack of care for the peasantry doesn't really support the claim that she's better for the position. Since Essie goes missing, she isn't in a ton of the book, but when she is there she seems to oscillate between wanting to keep up appearances and needing someone to help take the weight off her shoulders.
Cressida is Merrick and Essie's cousin-in-law, and she definitely felt off at the beginning. Essie says not to trust her and Merrick seems inclined not to, but at the same time, Cressida does offer help and seemingly wants nothing for it. I ended up liking her even though she can be a bit too much into societal perceptions at times.
Killian Brandon is a newish border guard in Sussex and has bene helping Essie investigate the strange goings-on. After Merrick comes home, and especially once Essie goes missing, he and Merrick team up to continue the investigations, and they have a good rapport. He's got a mysterious past he refuses to talk about, but he's also understanding and pushes Merrick in a good way. I liked the banter between the two of them, but did get frustrated at how closed off he could be at times, especially when it felt like he was just keeping silent because he could.
Ames Saint, another manor house heir, also comes in and out of the picture during the book. It's clear he and Essie know each other, though she doesn't particularly seem to like him. Ames and Merrick hit it off though and become quick friends. Merrick's inexperience with other manor houses comes into play a bit here as she agrees to his help out of friendship without thinking about how that means her house now owes his. While Merrick's family situation is complicated and at times painful, Ames' is definitely more painful. His father also died recently, but unlike Merrick, who has Essie and their cousins, Ames is alone with his icy, and at times cruel, mother. Ames could be charming at times, and there were definitely moments when I liked him, but I also thought Merrick was jumping into things too quickly and much too naively.
There were definitely some things that were obvious to me from the get-go but which took Merrick a lot more time to figure out. Despite seeming to think she's good at the kind of games the manor houses play, she's easily outwitted by some of the other lords, sometimes in cases where I felt she should've seen something coming from miles away. The reveal around 70-80% was definitely telegraphed in advance and I can't believe Merrick missed all the signs. Like...there were a lot of signs. I also thought one of the reveals at the end was obvious from the second something related to it is brought up at the beginning of the book. However, the reveal was a satisfying moment of congratulating myself on being right and I feel it was very plausible that none of the other characters knew. In that case, there was actually no way the characters could have known prior to the reveal.
There was a bit at the end related to the satisfying reveal that I was a little confused about. I was fairly certain things should've turned out much, much worse for Merrick but it ends up not being an issue when I think it should've been based on that reveal.
Overall I enjoyed this book and liked the uniqueness of the world. Merrick is an interesting character to follow and I liked being in her head. I did think she could be a bit naive at times though.

Former Buffalo Sabres Have Fun at Current Fans’ Expense
I’ve been told the Stanley Cup has been awarded.  Exile prompts vastly different whims.  My lengthy postseasons have oscillated between focusing on thriving teams as a distraction and skating away for the summer as a mental health break from a distraction that’s itself supposed to be just that.  I went with the latter this year.  Either way, I’m another Buffalo Sabres fan trying to keep the perennially disappointing team we’re cursed to follow from ruining enjoyment of the sport.  That’s Terry Pegula’s legacy.
The Stanley Cup will remain in its home country of the United States of America.  This nation includes the state of Florida, which has a more legitimate claim to hockey supremacy than Canada’s Tijuana.  Buffalo’s team helps Gary Bettman by showing that traditional hockey cities aren’t the only place for success and may not in fact experience it at all.
Inflicting disappointment gradually shields against shock.  Imagine explaining to the Buffalo sports fan unfrozen after 35 years trapped in a West Seneca glacier that Miami finally has a Stanley Cup to go along with Tampa Bay’s three.  Add how the Buccaneers won two Super Bowls to get the poor thawing dude to refreeze himself.
The tradition of leaving Buffalo to win a championship extends beyond even the record-setting Sabres absence.  The universe wants to make sure you know exactly how cruel it is by flaunting erstwhile heroes celebrating with different employers.  I refuse to list the countless names that come to mind for sanity’s sake.
Samson Reinhart found his dream partner after he left you.  But don’t take it personally.  Who knew he could stop underachieving to become a worthwhile partner?  Well, the Panthers did.  Rejected Sabres fans try to determine if he was unspectacular as a player or underutilized by a franchise that specializes in such.  A champion who scores at will shows that failure is not a curse when you’re doing it to yourself.
Who’s your favorite player who escaped drought conditions?  Brandon Montour scored 11 points this postseason, which is a reminder that the Sabres could sure use a puck-moving defenseman like him.  Oops!  Buffalo fans may not miss Evan Rodrigues as much even though he can put Stanley Cup winner on his business card no matter how his personal career’s gone.
The Panthers are so good that they overcame having Kyle Okposo.  The least inspirational captain possible found a way to avoid pouting about fans who noticed how he played, namely by joining a solid act.  The drought’s embodiment matched his futility with the Sabres personally as a passenger by not scoring in 17 playoff games.  It matched his total in Buffalo.
The responsible party is anything but.  Okposo led his previous team through the playoff absence he helped cause.  He’s Hot Dog Guy without anyone laughing.  Masochistic Sabres fans show how much abuse they’ll tolerate by cheering for a conman who stole from their team in every way.  Getting someone else to pay him to not produce is the closest this franchise gets to a win.
The runner-up provokes thoughts about what could’ve been if you thought there was relief.  Connor McDavid winning a Conn Smythe despite not being able to singlehandedly do the same with the Cup offers a reminder that even lottery ping pong balls are against us.  Then again, the Sabres might have wasted an all-time player’s potential as their most egregious example yet.  Try to remember the downside of seeming blessings to appreciate not receiving them.
At least one of the two teams I wanted to lose lost.  I was one more Buffalo fan cheering against Edmonton because their coach chose to start a lame feud with a fanbase that treats slights as offenses against made men.  Cup-pursuing failure Kris Knoblauch could’ve coached the Bills because he’s won the same number of titles.  I’m teasing.  He surely appreciates the precedent.
Acting as a farm team is not the most fulfilling way to be linked to championships.  The Sabres can’t use the excuse of big market teams raiding poor little towns.  You don’t even have to ask why Buffalo remains a small market.  It’s tough to grow when the multibillionaire owner drains taxpayers so he doesn’t have to pay his own business expenses.  Blaming lack of talent gets tricky when latent abilities emerge upon leaving town.  Previous Sabres coaches kept kryptonite in their pockets.
This is the latest season in a long series.  We’re beyond tired of watching those for whom we once cheered nab championships.  Seeing lost assets celebrate in different jerseys is particularly painful for fans of a team that will go at least four presidential elections between advancing.  The Sabres South win doesn’t count as a moral Cup for Buffalo in any way.  In fact, the only team that lost more than Buffalo was Edmonton.
A secondary defeat is common for the primary star-crossed sports city.  Just this year we’ve also endured a damned Boston team winning another freaking championship; even worse, it’s the one sort-of wrested from Buffalo.  That’s on top of yet one more Super Bowl win for a nemesis that can’t be classified as a rival for as long as it prevails in every postseason matchup.  And whoever wins the World Series will have a major league team unlike the city that thought Pilot Field was built as the home for that precise purpose.
I feel terrible for poor fans of playoff teams.  They’re adjusting to the offseason when Sabres fans are beyond accustomed to it.  It would feel uncomfortable to still follow hockey in summer.  You can’t skate on sand.  Letting all those Dolphins fans attend a parade where the Stanley Cup is the grand marshal seems far more preferable.  Particular absurd justifications change every year as results remain constant.

Note
I was going through your advice on good writing like "Oh, that write-consistently-even-if-it's-bad-and-eventually-the-skill-will-develop-like-a-muscle thing sounds exactly like Brandon Sanderson" and you mentioning him right in the next paragraph just hit me like a brick in the face. It always does when one person you appreciate and respect for what they do mentions another such person (the wildest one was seeing Sanderson's book in Henry Cavill's instagram)
Thank you! I have mad respect for Brando Sando, and probably would even if I didn't enjoy his books, because that man seriously goes to bat for young writers. He cares about us so much, and it shows. He doesn't pretend that having skill will magically make you successful. He freely admits that the literary market is a weird, chimerical beast with wildly oscillating appetites and nobody really gets why one thing sells and another doesn't. He straight up says, like, "I am a one in a million success story, please God do not base your career expectations on me." But then he goes on and tells you everything he knows, so if you do want to do what he did, goddamnit, he's gonna try his best to help you. (He filmed and uploaded his entire creative writing course at BYU to YouTube! For free!)
What's most meaningful to me personally is that listening to him made me realize there's nothing mysterious or otherworldly about being a Published Author; it's a career, like anything else. It's a very cool career! It's wonderful to share your work with others! But it's also just that: it's a job. It's work. The primary difference between an author and a writer is that one has to worry about marketing. I think that a lot more young writers would have healthier expectations for themselves, not to mention better relationships to their work, if more successful authors were as vocally honest and kind as Brandon Sanderson is.

A Heavy Pour & Three Oscillating Fans — 05/31/2022
Tumblr media
They said no intro
Cambridge so they filmed this almost three weeks ago
This is a HVAC podcast
I’m here for the podcasting from bed situation, but not so much for the lighting situation
Wait, why did you think rimming? lmaooo Katya’s face
I have a doctor note, I’m on my period
Oh no Trixie was still optimistic at this point saying that part of the tour was going to go by fast … she had a storm coming
I’ve got so much tea to tell you 🥺
This is why the pod is my favorite — this is basically them filming a FaceTime call
You look great 🥺🥺🥺
Fuck off Katya was at the Netflick event?
I know you left before my number & that is okay I’ve seen it!
You & Bob were the only two who looked any good
Your hair looked great
Someone clip these compliments for Trixie to listen to over & over again lol
Katya being so consistent in telling Trixie not to work so much — we love to see it
Okay no I’m sorry it’s so fucking cute that Trixie mentioned something in the middle of this Netflick convo & Katya has clearly already heard this story because she goes, tell them about it
The show was going very long, you know I had to get out of there
NOT SOMEONE ASKING TRIXIE YOU & KATYA, WHAT’S GOING ON THERE
Katya’s faaaace
You’ve gotta hold onto that Oh really? That’s nice, that’s nice. I’m trying to let go 😂
Have you happened to watch a documentary recently? I don’t know why you’d think that
It’s actually so weird that they both had such recent conversations with other people about all that
Trixie’s thing was THREE HOURS IN?? Listen I don’t blame Katya for leaving
You made it further through this performance than anything else I’ve ever done
I’ve got all the time in the world just talk at me 🥺
Good for Brandon being flown first class lol
I love that the people from Glow Up has Katya more gagged than anyone else this whole time lol
I’m so glad Katya’s getting her hip taken care of
Girl, you’re not dying until I say you can die, okay? Honey
I love that Katya was excited to watch AS7 on The Pit Stop
I’m a little shocked that Trixie said no to hosting The Pit Stop remotely tbh but god I’m glad she can actually say no to opportunities
Trixie’s face looking at the pic of Katya 🥺
I have all the screenshots & the video 😂😂😂
Trixie having sent Katya a picture while in the dermatologist office please
on file
Omg she really is calling herself Taffy I’m gonna scream
That’s nasty & rotten 😂
Katya being like you’re not just abruptly ending this call 🥺
Stop that was so cute. I’ve really missed them together on the pod

Rhythm of War Reactions
I’m finished with Rhythm of Wythm! So here are some haphazardly thrown together reactions.
Major major spoilers below the cut!
- You know I started this book literally just for Shallan but I ended up loving all the POVs, as I probably should have expected
- Navani was my favorite! I found her plot to be the most engaging, her character growth, her relationship with Raboniel, not to mention:
- Math!?!? and music!?!? My two true loves!?!? The connection between which I try to fit into as many school projects as possible!?!? Can Navani hire me to work on this please?
- Other than me desperately wanting to work on this project, the whole thing with converting light into sound into oscillations back into light was so cool and set up really well from TWoK. Sand plates!
- Raboniel could stab me and I would thank her
- I stole this from another post but yeah Kaladin really was like “these people all need therapy” “none for me though”
- I really want to see Jasnah’s reaction when she returns to Urithiru and Kaladin’s like “oh yeah I’m helping all those people the ardents locked up now, isn’t this cool and probably not personally relevant to your life”
- The whole concept of “give him more time” was so good :’)
- KALADIN SWORE THE FOURTH! “I accept that there are some people I cannot save!” (Or something like that.) Good for you man you deserve it
- Interestingly, Shallan has not sworn the fourth ideal yet, though she seems really close. Does this mean she’ll swear two in book 5? Or is Brandon saving the fifth for the back half for her? (Doesn’t seem likely.) I thought “I killed my first spren” would be a pretty good truth, but who knows...
- I did not like Dalinar as much this book. For someone whose main tenet is change and growth, he was surprisingly stubborn. Yes, this is within his characterization, but I hope it morphs into something a bit more cooperative in book 5.
- TRIAL BY WITNESS need I say more? I was literally covering the next page with my hand because I knew something epic was going to happen and I would glance ahead if I didn’t
- That being said, I wasn’t all that satisfied with how the book left off the Shadesmar expedition. It felt kinda pushed to the side in favor of the climax at Urithiru. Which... maybe there was no better way? But it is Shadesmar, so I feel like the timeline could have been shifted around or extended a bit to make more of a conclusion.
- Spren culture! I want to learn more!
- Rlain is now my boy. Do not touch him or I will take your kneecaps
- I came in pretty uninvested in Eshonai and Venli. I’m still not super invested in either of them, but Venli’s pretty cool, I guess? I definitely enjoyed her POVs, I just couldn’t really pinpoint what she was all about
- On a different note Teft just, like, DIED, so... that happened
- This book lowkey had me in a bad place by that point where I felt like I had to keep reading to get to a better part and thus did not do any of my work due today but it’s okay because Kaladin swore the fourth and I felt better and now I will do my work and not procrastinate more by writing this...
- SEON???
- Shallan!!!! my babe!!!! Was scREAming all throughout the Formless chapter and it did not disappoint
- I actually don’t hate Jasnah/Wit. I don’t love it. But I don’t hate it
- Canon ace Jasnah!
- Singer lore is really cool and even though I didn’t find the RoW flashbacks all that interesting I am excited to see where this goes
- As an Asian person who grew up with squinty/shifty eye jokes, I find it absolutely hilarious that people continue to make fun of the Shin for their enormous eyes
- Canon neurodivergent Syl!
- Canon nonbinary spren! I didn’t really like how they kept describing the Sibling’s voice as somewhere in between male and female, especially considering how the Sibling is so derisive of humans’ binaristic worldview. I did like the part where they were like “why do you even gender” though, that was fun and if not a personal mood definitely a nonbinary culture mood
- While on this topic, Wit’s story was definitely about being trans (it was not but I will talk about this later, flow is important)
- Also while on this topic, I was getting real strong trans Lift vibes. Idk how that would work as Stormlight already transes your gender, but maybe she hasn’t fully figured it out yet, or she still sees herself one way Cognitively which is definitely a thing. I don’t think it’ll happen, but it would be cool!
- Kaladin would be afraid of dogs
- Idk what’s going on with Ishar and perpendicularities but it’s cool I guess. 5/10
- I’m annoyed that Taravangian went back to his old conniving ways after he Ascended. Him being a traitor already annoyed me and it felt like all his growth through the book was for nothing. Also, what about Rayse? Y’know, the villain we’ve been fighting all this time? I feel like this would have been better suited for mid-late book 5, after some sort of conclusion has already happened with Rayse, or we feel like this transition is necessary.
- Dalinar needs to attain the fifth very very quickly and that makes me nervous because he does not seem close to the fourth like Shallan does.
- Is the whole fifth book going to take place within the next ten days?
- Wit’s story was not about being trans it was about mental illness and it was really good for reasons that I cannot put into words
- And finally: Now that Shallan has two Shardblades, can she wield two swords at once??? Please???
I hope you enjoyed those reactions. Stay safe and have a nice day! :)

10 Writer Questions
I was tagged by @feeisamarshmallow. thank you :)
1. What’s your favorite genre to write?
hurt/comfort or weird missing scenes. also fix-its or post-eps, but only for the sense of satisfaction I feel when I finish them.
2. Do you pull inspiration from real life, or do you pull things from other books/fanfiction you’ve read?
Both. I read a lot of fics before I started writing myself, so they obviously had some influence on my own work. Whenever I’m unsure of how to proceed with a story, I usually use something from my own experiences to move it along. And of course, the books I read have influenced my writing style in general.
3. Do you tend to write one-shots, short stories, or longer things?
I’ve only posted one-shots so far. I’m working on something now that may turn into a short multichap at some point, and I have an idea for a longer story that I’ll hopefully start soon.
4. Do you prefer to write description or dialogue?
It depends on the fic. I’ve been writing a lot of dialogue-heavy things lately, but I really don’t have a preference!
5. Favorite fic/book of all time?
I have a lot of books I love, but The Stormlight Archive series by Brandon Sanderson is one that stands out the most. Harry Potter also holds a special place in my heart. I read a lot of historical fiction as well, although I can’t really pick a favorite from that genre.
As far as fic goes, it honestly depends on my mood, but The Life and Times by Jewels5, oscillation (and variations on a familiar pattern) by fishycorvid, and Maggie Jackson’s Absolutely Awesome and Completely Happy Advent Calendar by HecateA are my go-to favorites for hp, b99, and pjo respectively.
6. Favorite Trope?
This also depends on my mood. Right now, it’s probably mutual pining. Also, Soulmate AUs.
7. Are you the kind of person to work on more than one WIP?
Yes. I have so many WIPs that they’re organized into four different google drive folders depending on fandom and genre.
8. How long have you been writing?
I posted my first fic in the summer of 2015 and wrote occasionally after that, but I took a break after I left the pjo fandom in 2017 and didn’t really get back into it until I started writing for b99 last year.
9. Do you tend to write more in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
No preference!
10. Do you prefer to post and update your WIP chapter by chapter or wait until it’s 100% complete before sharing it?
For the maybe-multichap I mentioned above, I’m probably going to write the entire thing before posting it. But in general, I think it’ll depend on how complicated the story is.
Tagging @b99peraltiago @vernonfielding @fezzle and anyone else who wants to do this!

Violette

Anonymous asked: I loved your RobbxRhaenys fic! How do you think the pairing would work if Rhaegar had won? Is he a ward like Theon, is she a bastard? Do they hate each other?
(posted as a regular text post bc tumblr fucked up and i lost the original ask)
ahh nonny thank you so much!!
i actually have a whole rhaegar wins au planned out in my head (maybe i’ll write some of it at some point, first i gotta finish the crownless fic follow-up oneshot). but here’s a general run down of how robb x rhaenys might play out in this world.
under the cut since this turned out wayy longer than expected
basic premise: rhaegar kills robert at the trident and wins the war. meanwhile in king’s landing, jaime still kills aerys when his madness gets too much, or when he reveals the caches of wildfire. tywin stays carefully neutral throughout the war. upon returning to the city, rhaegar is crowned king. lyanna still dies in childbirth.
rhaenys and aegon are legitimate. show canon and i do not get along lmao. jon, the semi-acknowledged bastard of the king, is taken to winterfell to be raised because elia is not risking another blackfyre rebellion, and ned wants lyanna’s kid to be raised in her home. rhaegar is just guilt-striken enough over lyanna’s death to allow it.
jon visits king’s landing on occasion as he gets older. he and rhaegar have a weird relationship (there’s a lot of angst there, a lot of unresolved issues). jon and aegon do get along though, which everyone is secretly relieved about. it takes rhaenys longer to warm up to jon. she remembers the rebellion, she remembers how hurt her mother was when rhaegar dropped everything for lyanna. rhaenys has never quite forgiven rhaegar. eventually, with encouragement from aegon, she strikes up a tentative friendship with jon.
with lyanna, brandon and rickard dead, house stark has suffered enough and rhaegar lets them go without asking them for much more. however, robb is asked (ordered) to visit king’s landing when he gets older. everyone has suddenly realized that house stark is a much bigger power than previously thought, and it’s a good idea for the iron throne to stay on good terms with the future warden of the north.
(by contrast, jon arryn is sent to the wall at the end of the rebellion. he didn’t have the advantage of being related to the new king’s dead lover to save him. the vale is passed down to harry hardying with one of the lords acting as regent. in the stormlands, stannis bends the knee and becomes lord. he marries cersei and it is the single most entertaining marriage in westeros.)
still, despite all the work queen elia and jon connington and the rest of the small council put into repairing relations with the north, they remain very frosty. ned certainly never forgives rhaegar. he’s not about to go to war again, but he’s also never going to step foot in king’s landing again. robb grows up with a distinctly antagonistic view of the iron throne, and the belief that it’s better for the north to keep to itself and stay out of politics of the realm. still, his childhood is more or less the same as it was in canon.
rhaenys is a force to be reckoned with at court. she grew up at her mother’s elbow, learning the nuts and bolts of ruling, how everything happens behind the scenes. oberyn taught her how to fight with a dagger (same as in crownless), as well as a few tricks to suss out people’s secrets. when she visits dorne, she watches doran, compares his style of ruling to her mother’s, to her father’s. if westeros had absolute primogeniture, rhaenys would make a formidable queen. as it is, she is aegon’s number one pick for hand for when he eventually takes the throne, scandal be damned.
her circle of friends is certainly an interesting mix. myrcella baratheon (a bit older and an actual baratheon this time) and margaery tyrell are conventional ladies in waiting, but they’re also both vying for aegon’s hand. meanwhile the sand snakes are the terror of the court and oberyn thinks it’s hilarious. rhaenys thinks tyene should stop pretending to poison mace tyrell. when arianne visits - well, things can get interesting. no one can quite tell if tyrion lannister and princess rhaenys hate each other or not, but their debates are certainly fun to watch.
(hmm, maybe theon also ends up in king’s landing. robert trusted ned to watch over him in winterfell but rhaegar and ned have a very different relationship. idk where i’m going with this train of thought, but it would certainly add a new dynamic to rhaenys’s little court.)
rhaenys is not betrothed. it’s unusual, and people have started to comment on it. she is one and twenty and the most eligible woman in the land. there’s quite a bit of interest for her hand, but elia has decided that rhaenys will have a say in her marriage, and rhaegar oscillates between not caring much about the matter and toying with the idea of marrying her to aegon, in the old tradition. rhaenys has told him that if he even tries to marry them, she will elope with the first man she can find and wouldn’t that be quite the scandal? so rhaenys remains unmarried.
(the biggest difference in rhaenys here from rhaenys in the crownless fic is that here, rhaenys knows power. not only was she born into power but she has grown into it as well. she will do her duty to her family and the realm, but she will not sacrifice her own happiness unless there is no other choice. as practical as she is, marriage alliances are off the table.)
this is a lot of setup to get to robb and rhaenys making out but bear with me lol.
robb goes to king’s landing shortly after turning eighteen upon request (summons) from the throne, accompanied by catelyn, sansa, and arya. it’s skirting on rude for ned not to come, but rhaegar lets it slide. he’s lyanna’s brother, and there’s a lot that rhaegar feels guilty about concerning lyanna. anyway, it’s robb’s second time in king’s landing, but the first time he’d been fourteen and rhaenys had hardly noticed him. now though, there’s a bit of “oh shit he’s hot now” before robb makes it clear he’s only here out of obligation. then rhaenys decides that there’s no reason for the two of them to interact and that is that.
(or is it, asks the author in a leading tone.)
so really, there’s no reason for robb and rhaenys to speak to each other. rhaenys is busy with a discrepancy in taxes coming from the vale, and robb is busy trying to avoid southroners at all costs. but circumstances bring them together somehow. maybe there’s a conspiracy afoot, and they have to work together to stop it. maybe rhaenys is forced to show robb around the keep. or maybe rhaenys finds the quiet of the godswood peaceful and robb keeps coming across her there.
“this isn’t a real godswood. not without a proper weirwood heart tree, like the ones in the north.” “mayhaps you can show me a proper godswood someday, my lord.”
really, they have nothing in common, there’s nothing they should have to talk about, but rhaenys finds robb’s frank honesty refreshing after all the double talk at court, and robb thinks she’s probably the cleverest woman he knows. somewhere along the line they become each other’s refuge from all the politics and mistrust of king’s landing.
there’s a feast one day, celebrating some important occasion or whatnot. and there’s dancing and mead, and rhaenys can’t remember the last time she had this much fun. she and robb slip away into the gardens to cool off in the night air and well. rhaenys will blame it on a few too many cups of dornish red but robb’s lips fit perfectly against hers and he tastes like cinammon.
robb panics. this is the princess he is kissing, daughter of the king who brought so much pain upon his family. gods this is jon’s sister, and robb’s father always told him to behave honorably towards women and the thoughts he’s having are certainly not honorable. so robb runs.
rhaenys is furious. well, really she’s embarrassed but anger is easier. for the next week or so she is a nightmare to be around. not that she’d admit to anyone that she’s in a bad mood. meanwhile, robb is moping and hiding from everyone and probably spending most of his time sparring.
jon, who isn’t blind and is absolutely done with them, practically forces robb to talk to rhaenys. he doesn’t care what happened, he just wants the two of them to get over themselves and stop being so insufferable. also rhaenys made one of the goldcloaks cry and no one quite knows how that happened.
so they talk. and robb apologizes for kissing her, which rhaenys is quick to tell him is absolutely ridiculous, she’s the one who initiated it and besides, it was just a kiss.
well, that one kiss turns into quite a few more.
there aren’t really words for what they are to each other. if she were anyone else, robb would probably ask for her hand, but she’s the princess of the realm, not some petty lord’s daughter. and rhaenys doesn’t want to think about putting a label on them, because that would mean thinking about how the two of them fit in the future. and since they aren’t betrothed and king’s landing isn’t dorne, no one can know about their…. whatever.
then rhaegar starts bringing up the subject of rhaenys’s betrothal again. aegon isn’t on the table, since he and margaery tyrell are all but promised to each other at last, but perhaps willas tyrell would do, or maybe harry hardyng in the vale. lady paramount is a perfectly acceptable role for the sister to the future king.
(robb isn’t mentioned as an option. he might be of the right status, but relations between ned and rhaegar are still quite frosty, and the realm still doesn’t quite see the north as equal to the southern kingdoms.)
rhaenys knows, intellectually, that she must marry someday. and really, willas tyrell and harry hardyng are just suggestions. she could always look for a second son for a husband, so she could stay in king’s landing. but she doesn’t want to marry a stranger, and she doesn’t want to leave the city, and the only person she can think of is her cousin quentyn, and arianne would kill her if she married quent.
robb learns about the discussions for rhaenys’s hand from rumors floating around the court. and really, he shouldn’t care who rhaenys marries, it’s not like they’re anything more than good friends who kiss sometimes. or at least, that’s what he tries to tell himself.
he’s not very good at convincing himself.
“marry me,” robb blurts out. rhaenys stops dead in her tracks. “what?”
rhaenys says no. winterfell is about as far as it gets from king’s landing, and she does not wish to be sent away to a frozen wasteland where she knows close to nobody. there is so much she can do at court, so much change she could help affect, and she cannot do that in the north.
she explains this all to robb and he shrugs. “we could stay in the south.”
rhaenys is not often surprised. this makes it twice today that she has been struck speechless.
robb does not like court, as she is quick to remind him.
“no, but i like you.”
they talk late into the night. the sun is starting to peek out behind the treeline when rhaenys says yes.
(the issue was not that she did not wish to marry robb. quite the opposite. but if she is to be a part of the politics of realm, she cannot do so effectively in winterfell all the time. so they talk, and debate, and eventually a plan is drawn up for where they will reside.)
of course, this is all dependent on rhaegar and ned accepting. robb’s time in king’s landing is drawing to a close, and so he returns to winterfell to ask for his father’s permission. rhaenys goes to talk to rhaegar and elia.
rhaegar is surprised, to say the least. elia, who has been quietly watching her daughter’s flirtation-turned-courtship for the past months, is not. in the end, the discussion is rather short. robb stark is heir to one of the great houses, and the iron throne desperately needs better relations with the north. there’s little to oppose.
ned, on the other hand, is more reluctant to bind the starks to the royal family so officially. he loves his nephew dearly, but he cannot forget the circumstances under which jon was born. but robb seems to care for this southron princess, and catelyn is right, they cannot try to stay out of southron politics forever.
robb and rhaenys are married in the godswood at riverrun, halfway between their families’ castles. for the wedding of a royal princess and the heir to the north, it’s a surprisingly lowkey affair. but robb hardly notices much other than rhaenys, resplendent in dornish silks, and rhaenys for once lets herself forget about the politics and the future, and just lets robb lead her around in a sloppy rendition of the bear and the maiden fair.
(robb is not a great dancer, but he is definitely an enthusiastic one. rhaenys thinks it’s charming.)
it isn’t easy all the time. splitting time between winterfell and king’s landing means endless amounts of travelling, and they aren’t always in the same kingdom together. there are fights, and long nights working, and sometimes the politics at court get to be too much for both of them, but for all their differences, robb and rhaenys love each other. and maybe that’s all that’s needed.
god this got long, and this is really only a sketch of what that scenario would look like. maybe i’ll write a proper fic for this universe sometime, we’ll see.
thanks again anon!
