Breaking the Maya Code is a great read. Would strongly recommend it to anyone interested in both the technical side of language deciphering but also the human side. Technical challenges are often matched by the challenges of people in academia with agendas who can aid, but also block, progress, hold on to paradigms and delay knowledge for very human reasons. It’s a very poignant tale of how academic/social/economic structures can work against finding the truth, without necessarily being malicious.

Yuri Knorozov - the man who opened the door to translating written mayan. With his kitty of course (listed as co authoring his paper). Behind him is the bishop Landa alphabet that he used to crack the code so to speak. If you are interested in the story I highly recommend Breaking the Maya Code by Micheal Coe a friend of Yuri's

this song completely decimated me btw and launched me into calebmc doom!! very much totally and completely started by ucyobie’s edit on tiktok!! i think it encapsulates calebmc’s dynamics very well, especially for a character and relationship as mischaracterised as theirs. honestly, the standout lines i have could go both ways to be honest (#switch #bisexual):

i love this song but never equated it to caleb (for some reason) until my lovely mutual bluebellies wrote a beautiful, haunting, life-changing work that actually flipped my whole view of calebmc by good 90 degrees.. like it's so poignant as i literally posted my first ao3 fic back in 2021 with an exploration on grief via maya fey from ace attorney!! (full circle moment!!) absolutely love this song.. mitski does the soggy, losing, desperately hungry dog analogy so well (caleb😭😭) the calebmc codependency goes crazyyy. anyways, standout lines:

i love, love, love this song so much, like it's probably my most streamed song this year. and honestly, i associate basically any summer themed song with caleb because that's how he is to me: boldly bright like the heat could ever hide away the happiness of our memories or the reminder of how awful it can be to be stuck under such a blazing glare.. but then the rain squanders, it casts a sheen on whether any of that was ever real at all. this is endless summer coded (aka my favourite card)!! standout lines (translation by me! i'm the least confident in my korean skills but hopefully it's all legible as i tried hard to add context to the nuance!):

lucky last! a recent add to my caleb playlist! suki waterhouse is one of my favourite artists, and the mood, the feel, the gritty dreaminess of her voice and her songs suit him well! this is that culmination of that will they, won't they, that absolutely delicious yearning throughout their lives, throughout everything. they're intertwined like strings, like unyielding stars, like a shoelace that's been knotted beyond failure. all those unspoken glances, those stolen and buried kisses. one like and i'll write a calebmc birthday fic with this song. Naming tigers is common practice not just in Panna but in tiger reserves across India. Some are named for specific physical features; others earn their monikers based on behavioural traits and sighting patterns.

One of the most popular tigers, known as Machli worldwide, was officially T-16 of the Ranthambore National Park. The 19-year-old became the poster child for the government’s tiger conservation programme.

Prepared to get backlash on this but I dont understand why anyone likes jack gibson? He Literally ruins EVERYTHING then doesnt even feel the need to apologise then just gets given the chance to swoop in and be the hero or the nice guy and people seem to fall for that?

He slept with andy in s1 knowing it was against the rules and they could've broken the whole teams trust, slept with maya knowing andy would probably be hurt and let maya take all the blame for that and didnt defend her or have the decency to explain to andy himself, went out of his way to make maya feel worse for crying after Ripley died all bc he found her tears "a little distracting" and just kept going even after she told him to stop making her feel worse, threw a hissy fit the entirety of s3 at her bc he was bitter abt being dumped and had no problem ganging up on her with andy as if he wouldnt have taken the job if he was offered it, broke the code and slept with his teammates wife multiple times despite knowing she was married and then when Rigo found out he continued to lie to his face like right before he died he said he didnt know (which he did after the first time), then after being given therepy by diane and the team forgiving him very easily and he was preaching abt how he was trying to be better then had absolutely no problem helping maya self sabotage her new rl despite him knowing she was in one and that she'd been abused by her dad and threw that in her face then didnt leave when he was asked then picked her up and took her to the bunk while maya was clearly emotionally distressed, thus making the exact same mistake again after the rigo and eva situation and after treating maya terribly all season and constantly whining abt how she chose her career over him as if she ever made any promises to him or did anything with him other than hook up then SHE was one to apologise to HIM, he didnt apologise to the team for breaking the code, or to carina for getting with her gf knowing she was with her.

Then got with inara after saying he wouldnt, who was previously abused in a relationship who he helped get out of. Broke the code AGAIN in S5 by making out with vic knowing she was with theo and didnt even apologise to him and told vic she could ruin her life and that he didnt care, the writers then gave him this redemption arc with helping set up the clinic, and giving people medical care which he is literally paid to do, and stripped carina of any dignity and turned her into his fan girl with that stupid donor crap, his motivation to be it wasnt at all abt helping out his friends all his reasons were selfish then he butted into everything, literally fetishised them and was straight up just creepy, then blurted out marinas private information to the first person he next saw (andy) without permission, then ditched the station without a word after Andy's charges literally JUST got dropped and leaving marina with absolutely no warning, also bailed on marsha who has basically been a mother to him, lied abt where he was to andy for like 3 months knowing how triggering lies were for her, was blatantly rude to maya and disclosed her private info AGAIN infront of vic, didn't even apologise to her for leaving or to andy for lying all carina got was "oh sorry by the way" then went with the victim complex. Everyone on the team showed up for him and tried to help him ben, vic and carina gave him advice rigo came back from THE DEAD for him and andy constantly bent over backwards trying to help him and she was met with rudeness.

He made maya's injury all abt himself and confided in her literal WIFE abt how hard it would be for HIM to lose her then didnt even ask if either of them were okay nor did he visit maya in the hospital, then when carina came back to the clinic he followed her around like a creep trying to peer into a private cubicle then started accusing her of all sorts and gossiped abt her to ben despite knowing she was going through such a difficult time as if he has any right to criticise given his track record and used the excuse that "he didnt want the family to fall apart" and said he'd do the same with ben and miranda which is just rude and not his place anyway and also that he'd "worked hard to be back there" when he really didnt he was instantly given his job back the second it was announced that maya was injured.

When he slipped and smacked his head in 6x14 he got a concussion he still went on the call and didnt tell anyone until he literally passed out in the beanery which if he had collapsed on the call he could've hurt himself even worse or left a team member exposed in a fire and got them hurt or even a civilian. Extremely irresponsible of a paramedic then was suprised it lead to permanent brain damage. Then when everyone tried to do something nice and throw him a party he was like "they are only doing this bc they are obliged to" like seriously? People on the team are constantly there for him and he is so coddled by them. He has marsha and his sisters yet still mopes around like "I have no one who cares abt me :(" I get hes been through alot but so has everyone else they dont whine nearly as much and some dont get half as much support as he does. He has made so many mistakes and has put in the least amount of effort to make up for them yet everyone still loves him? I dont get it..

Also I think the actor is so bad. I'm sure grey is a nice person and this is purely criticising acting capabilities. I literally can't watch his scenes without cringing. In the first 3 seasons I thought he was bland and emotionally stiff then after that it looked like he was almost trying to hard as his face was constantly twitching and eyes squinting, all his sentences were stuttery and couldn't get one out without an "uhhh", also his HANDS omg I particularly noticed this in S5 and a bit in s6 (however it looked like the directors made an effort to get him to tone it down after s5) WHY is he always flailing? They're constantly moving and it doesnt look natural AT ALL and it is SO distracting. I known for a fact that makes the editors lives so much more difficult bc that's hard to edit in post..and emotional range is not good. It never has been. If you pay attention pretty much all of the crying scenes he's had he covers his eyes. There is no tears. It doesnt seem like grey is very comfortable with doing them he doesnt really do it very well imo

@vexx-ation you also asked so here we go. (As have a few anons sorry this is long and it's taking a while to write everything down)

So my Klaryan take is kinda a mega theory that takes a lot of mini theories into consideration so here it is. This will be long. This will be unhinged. This is my Pepe silvia

Tw for discussions of substance abuse and abusive relationships

1) AA4 parallel foils

Ok so this is semi common knowledge. Every character in AA4 is ment to be a direct foil to a character in aa1. This is well documented and also applies to a lot of the witnesses too. Apollo is a foil for Phoenix, Ema is a foil for Gumshoe, Trucy is a foil for Maya, Klavier is a foil for Edgeworth. This goes on for almost every charcater in the game.

But here's the thing. The trilogy already has foils already. So some of these charcaters end up being massive parallels to eachother. A non relevent example I think about daily is that Trucy and Franziska are very similar but where this is relevant is Klapollo and Narumitsu. I have a post explaining this I'm more detail but basically while far from identical there are a lot of perhaps unintentional but at minimum unexplored parallels between Phoenix and Klavier and Apollo and Edgeworth. This is important.

2) Krisnix as an allegory for substance abuse

So first of my opinion of this doesn't really influence my take on grape juice but it's pretty undeniable that even if you don't think Beanix has addiction issues, hes almost coded to. There's the comment about Ema and the white powder and then the extent to which he's always surrounded by grape juice which at minimum looks like wine. In universe it's easy to see this as a part of his mask and that is my in universe take, he's trying to look in a bad way to hide how he's actually doing.

But I think we can take this further. Miles and Kristoph are superficially very very similar characters however underneath are deeply different and as such have a very different effect on Phoenix's mental state. Miles is absent during the 7yg at his request. And there's a miles shaped hole left in his life that he wants to fill with something that is superficially the same but is in it's effects very different and very bad for him.

Anyone who has dealt with addiction will likely recognise that pattern.

3) Klavier is on some level (whether he's in denial about it or not) aware that Kristoph is in some way dangerous or abusive and was running from him with the band

This is mostly just my take on how he acts in sucession and another very good post that I'll have to find that talks about how similar him joining the band was to the things the other people involved with the Gramarye trial did to try and evade Kristoph.

4) Phoenixs biggest flaw and how Kristoph tests it

So I basically never shut up about this in some places but might not have talked about it here so the tldr of this is that Phoenixs biggest flaw is that he is constantly trying to see the best in people. The final test of this is not breaking the black psyche locks and accepting that just because he's a human being with complexity, doesn't mean his actions are excused or that Phoenix has to forgive or protect him.

So this is where we can start bringing it together a bit.

Klavier and Phoenix are both very similar characters and both victims of Kristophs abuse. Phoenix has a relationship that exemplifies his harmful behaviour after the trial, it's pretty interesting to explore the same thing happening to Klavier.

Especially when we start to compare Daryan to Kristoph and find that they're superficially very different even if both of them turned out to be murders. Kristoph is reserved, Daryan is brash. Kristoph is classy, Daryan is flashy. Kristoph is well spoken and poetic, Daryan is straightforward. You get the idea.

And isn't that fucking fascinating? That Klavier ran to someone who was the complete opposite of his brother but ended up being just as dangerous? And also is it not really interesting that as Phoenix has to learn to accept Kristoph's humanity doesn't excuse his actions. If we take Klavier running to Daryan in this way to be him refusing to acknowledge the human side of his brother, that but running to the superficial opposite and not recognising what truly did make Kristoph dangerous, he fell into the arms of a murder.

And of course, the person he then falls for, is someone who is Apollo. Who is genuinely a good person but was Kristophs mentor and is very similar to him in a number of superficial ways. He has to stop running from his trauma and confront it head on.

Basically this interpreation means the klaryan/ Klapollo and Narumitsu/Krisnix love triangles function as basically a microcosm for how these two handle their trauma and how they have to over come it and each is a direct mirror of the other.

My take on Daryan

Ok people might have seen me joke that he's straight. Here's the thing. I think he definitely has been sleeping with Klavier. They are in some kind of relationship. Buuuuut, I do not think the feelings he has about the relationship are ever well traditionally romantic or sexual. I think it's driven from his side primarily by envy and rage that Klavier gets the spotlight more than him. He can never upstage Klavier on stage, but he can posses him. He can make him feel like shit as revenge.

My General Klayran timeline

They start whatever their weird thing is during the 7yg.

After 4-1 Klavier spirals a lot and it puts intense strain on their relationship because Daryan does not care about this bitch and does not want to support him

4-2 Klavier meets Apollo, sees him in court and kinda starts to develop a big old crush. He realises that Daryan is making him miserable and breaks it off after the case

4-3 newly broken up and it's taking its toll. Then we'll 4-3 happens and that's the end of them.

Circle of Clouds: Focused on Charlotte and her wife Sylvia. They've been saving up to go on a vacation to the overwater city. They get involved clearing Poprocks's name.

Disco and Cicada: Disco breaks into Cicada's house and starts living there. He ends up helping Cicada by reminding the guy to eat food and stuff. Cicada 'doesn't like' Disco (they're gay).

Corporate Spirits: Main characters Gabriel and Micah. Partners in an exorcist agency thing, they get rid of spirits. Gabriel is experienced, Micah is new. While doing their job, they struggle to figure out how to get rid of Ada, a ghost haunting Micah.

Unnamed High School: World based off my roleplay ocs, not really a fleshed out story.

You are correct, they get their first set of suits from Wu! the first set is pretty simple and the ninja all end up "customizing" them in their own way (tying them a certain way, wearing stuff under/on top, pins patches and buttons, cutting off the sleves, stuff like that) eventually when they meet Dareth, he makes all their new fancy custom suits :] After they defeat Chen and his followers, the group all accept their destiony and move into the monastery with lloyd, Wu, and Misako and begin their formal training which is when they get their first color coded suits

Now, when it comes to Joel, I'd definitely think "I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)" gives me so much Joel Miller vibes, the whole sultry beat and the lyrics, it's purely written FOR Joel. Even "peace" especially, "this is me trying" and "cardigan" off of folklore are such Joel songs, the whole comfort of knowing that someone still wants you even after going through hard and tough times, it resonates so deeply with him. Leela still wants him no matter what the hell he thinks about himself, he still wants her even after all the fucked-up shit he's been through and done - "peace" is literally Joel in the flesh.

Leela is halfway between "ivy" and "right where you left me" off of evermore. Some of my all-time favourite songs off that album, and everything about it IS her. Maybe "Midnight Rain" off of Midnights and "Castles Crumbling" is so Leela-coded when you get into the lyrics. Next week, they will sortie in a brave endeavor to break the pirate blockade of the station!

This squad includes: -Sétanta "Set" Hawkins, Callsign 'Cornfed', heir to a family that has been part of the Hell's Gate militia since the pyrite age, passing down the callsign and their mech ever since (the latter of which has long ceased to contain any original parts, grandfather's axe style). He's aiming towards monarch parts to enact that one Megas XLR gif.

-Meadow Reaper, Callsign 'Reaper', a bubbly farmer from Asphodel with a militarized farming rig (counts-as a caliban) who joined up for adventure at the advice of a mysterious patron.

-Pale Sage, Callsign 'Porcelain', a hell's gate foundryworker who suffered a horrific industrial accident, only kept alive through donated HORUS tech. But now he was back and had unexpectedly found a new reason to never leave again.

He thought about Maya, he only had a small glimpse, but the girl looked like the most adorable child he had ever seen. He wanted to get to know her.

The previous night while laying in the grass he thought about things to teach her, wondered if she liked the stars or hockey or crazy sugary stuff like her mother. He had always wanted kids, that was something he and Aelin had discussed while they were dating. Rowan wanted a big family and now that the possibility was within grasp he would do his best to fight for it until the end.

Lunch finished he resumed his walk and found himself in front of the window of Aelin’s shop. He had missed the inauguration by a week but had seen photos. He had helped her throughout the whole process and saw the shop slowly coming alive. She had done well and, although he was mad at her for lying at him, he was proud of her.

Hesitation hit him hard. A part of him wanted to go inside, but the other was not sure. He had no idea how he would feel at seeing her again. His feelings were far too tangled to be able to predict his reaction and it unnerved him.

Step by step he moved closer and at the front door his hand moved on the handle and pushed the door open. 

A bell marked the arrival of a new customer and two heads turned towards him. Both black haired: Elide and Lysandra. He stood, incapable of moving an inch. His eyes scanned the shop and did not find Aelin.

“Rowan,” Elide had walked to him, followed by Lysandra.

“So you are back,” added Lysandra almost in a confrontational tone.

“My mum got tired of me.” He tried to make a joke but his nervousness hitched up a notch. The two women clearly did not like him and he was okay with it. He just wanted to talk to Aelin “Is Aelin around?”

The two women exchanged glances and then indicated the office with their heads. Before he could move, Lysandra’s hand landed on his arm “You hurt her and I swear Whitethorn, you will be running back to Wendlyn within a day.”

Rowan glared at the woman and gently extricated himself from the grip. Why was he the bad guy all of a sudden?

He reached the door of the office and knocked.

Aelin slumped on her chair behind the desk and buried her face in her hands. A sob broke the silence of the room and then another and one more. Aelin let her tears flow. So many questions crowding her mind. Rowan was back. And he knew. How was she going to explain to him the reasons why she had lied? Her fears? Why was he back?

She stood and paced the room, looking outside where the snow was falling hard. She had woken up in a wonderful mood but now… 

Aelin almost sat down again when a knock at the door stopped her.

Silence and a second knock came a few seconds later “Aelin?”

That voice. She hadn’t heard it in five years but it still had the power to undo her. His accent. That lilting tone that was so him. Her heart raced and concentrated hard on what awaited her behind the door.

“Come in,” she croaked.

The door opened slightly and Rowan appeared in front of her. He had his uniform on, a white shirt, blue cargo trousers and a blue soft shell jacket that read Chief Whitethorn. She looked up at his face and her breath caught. His hair was slightly longer and his face… the harsh lines that gave him a rugged handsomeness were all still there. She hadn’t seen him in five years and her heart still raced like the first time.

“Rowan,” she breathed harshly “You are back.”

He nodded in silence.

“You look good,” she added, trying to fight the awkwardness of the moment. All of a sudden she had no idea how to talk to him.

“I love the shop. It looks amazing,” his lips bent in a very tight smile.

Aelin leaned against the desk placing her hands behind her “Why are you here?”

A loud snort left Rowan “Really? Do you have to ask me that question?”

“I was not expecting you back.”

“Clearly,” he added trying to clamp down the irritation in his voice “So much that you decided it was okay to keep from me the fact that I have a daughter.”

Aelin briefly looked away “It was the best choice at the time.” She looked back at him and saw fury burn in his pine green eyes. Smouldering hot fury cursing through him.

“She is my daughter too,” he hissed at her “and you lied.”

“You left!” She growled back in response matching his tone.

“Aelin, my father had died, my family was falling apart,” he breathed hard and started pacing “My mother fell into such deep depression that for a while the doctors had thought to place her under suicide watch. I had to go.” The words hit like knives. His mother was doing so much better thanks to therapy and the medication, but he could not forget the months following his father passing. And he was in a dark place too.

“And I let you go, Rowan. I never tried to keep you away from your family so don’t make me pass like a monster.”

Rowan stared at the woman in front of him and all of a sudden he did not recognise her anymore. The woman who had been the love his life had become a stranger. And the deep part of him that still remembered what he felt for her, grieved at the loss.

He took a step closer “Were you pregnant the last time I came back?”

Aelin was silent all of a sudden.

“I did the math after Lorcan told me her birthday.”

“It was pointless anyway.” Her voice sad.

“I could have found a way.”

She looked up at him, her eyes shining with the hint of tears she was trying not to shed “Maya and I were not a weekend past time. You could have never fully committed to us, so I gave you an out.”

She could see that Rowan was pushing down his anger, she knew his reactions so well. His jaw was tight, making the lines of his face harsh, his hands tightened in fists at his side.

“Have you even thought about the fact that knowing that she was a grandma might have helped my mum? That I could have brought her to Terrasen for a while? Do you really think that I was so deep in my sorrow that I would have made a crappy father? I would have found a way to make things work.” He growled trying not to raise his voice.

Her blue eyes met his and saw deep sincerity in them. She knew that Rowan wanted a family and had no doubts that he would make the most caring father a child could have, but a the time she was positive that not telling him was the best way to protect everyone.

“I was just trying to protect her.”

“From her father?”

“From pain, Rowan. From you not being here for her.”

His hand raked roughly through his hair “That worked out well. You robbed me of five years of my daughter’s life. Five years of her growing up, learning to walk, talk, read.”

Aelin was silent and Rowan took that as a clue to keep venting his feelings “I have rights, Aelin. She is my daughter, my blood. I want to see her grow up. I want to teach her things, spend time with her.”

“Until you transfer again.”

He growled again “I bought a house Aelin, I am not leaving Orynth, this is my home.”

“I have to think about it.”

“About what?” He roared a bit too loud “If I am fit to be around her? Are you kidding me?”

“She is five, Rowan. Have you thought about how it would affect her to have a father all of a sudden?”

“Are you ready to answer the question when one day she comes home from school and asks you why she does not have a father like all the other kids?”

Aelin was stunned. Yes, until two days ago she had a lie ready. She would have told Maya that her dad was a firefighter and died bravely in a fire.

“You did!” He added at her silence.

“I was going to tell her you died heroically on the job.”

Pain. She saw the unyielding pain that cursed through Rowan at her admission. He stood silent, staring at her, his eyes set on her “I have rights, I want to see her. I can be a friend of your for now, but I want to see my daughter.”

Aelin was silent. Rowan drew a harsh breath and saw him regains his composure.

“Don’t make me involve lawyers, Aelin,” he said quietly “I don’t want to put our daughter through a custody battle, please.”

With that he left the room.

Aelin slumped on the floor and let the tears come in full force.

Hot take: jack took advantage of maya in the cheating incident

For the record I'm not defending what maya did in think it was awful but in a way I do understand why although I still hate it. It was self sabotage as she was triggered. jck continuously got all up in her face, she did actually ask him to leave and he didnt he continued to throw her abuse at her and he knew full well she was in a relationship. Any decent person wouldve just pulled away and the fact he was still so bitter that she dumped him so he had to go do that? Ridiculous.

Maya was emotionally distressed its unsettling to me how he knew she'd been abused her whole life and she was struggling to come to terms with it yet threw that in her face and proceeded to sleep with her when she was in that state.

And After EVERYTHING he did that season with eva and rigo youd think he might've learned something. I think it's ridiculous they had him on track for character development, he was getting help from diane to understand why he did it, the team defended him and forgave him for breaking the code, he was even getting credit from dean for trying to be better then 2 minutes later he's knowingly wrecking another relationship? Are you serious? It feels like he essentially just spat in everyones faces after they showed him so much leniency and got support for something he probably should've been fired for. I really dont like that man hes always been so inconsiderate to everyone else.

The situation reminds me of meredith and george on greys. George wasnt over her, meredith was drunk, she was dealing with relationship issues and also her mother with alzheimer's whom she had a difficult relationship with and george knew all of this. Yet she was the one who faced all the shame

Of course in both incidents you can make the argument both parties took advantage of eachother but my problem is that the men in both situations knew better. They were in healthier states of mind, they knew the woman was in a difficult place and still preceeded to do what they knew was wrong and cause so much trouble for them all bc they weren't over the girl....

I bring this up bc it frustrates me how little consequences the men face on these shows when they've done awful things and the women are demonized by both the writers and the fans. I think it's very unfair the different standard the men and women are held to I dont get how the men can continuously behave so childish and yet get to play the victim card.

I saw someone say they thought eva took advantage of jack in s3 which I thought was an interesting take not sure if I fully agree with it but it depends how you look at it. I suppose in a way she took advantage of his emotional vulnerability but jack knew full well what he was doing and did it multiple times he even admitted it and that he wasnt forced to. I mean he didnt seem to need much convincing from eva before he lead her to his bunk. I just thought that if one thought he was taken advantage of there then I dont know how he didnt do the exact same thing to maya if not worse.

I’m not sure I’d say Jack took advantage of Maya, I’ve never really seen it that way. But it’s definitely interesting that you drew a parallel to the Grey’s situation. To me, the two feel pretty different. Maya was emotionally vulnerable and self-sabotaging, yes, but the scene was framed as a moment of mutual weakness. Jack didn’t come off as predatory to me. Maya did ask him to leave, but then she chose to kiss him. That doesn’t make Jack innocent but he also wasn't framed as taking advantage of Maya in the same way George did with Meredith. For me, there’s a clear difference in how consent and emotional awareness were presented in each situation.

That said, I completely agree that Jack’s character arc was inconsistent, and the writers let him off the hook way too easily for a lot of what he did. But with the Maya cheating incident, I saw two flawed people, not one clearly exploiting the other. My issue is that the show never truly held Jack accountable for his part. The narrative mostly put the blame on Maya. Carina did call him out briefly, but that moment came and went.
