RAINWORLD UPDATE!!

Figures out what passages are!! Tried to get Saint but ended up saving a Scavenger from a lizard so that brought it down.

I WAS TRYING TO GET TO THE GARBAGE WASTES AND I FOUND THE SHADED CITADEL ON ACCIDENT. ITS DEEPNEST ALL OVER AGAIN OH GOD I AM IN SO MUCH DANGER THE SPIDERRSSSS

On the bright side! I figured out wall parkour in this region! And figured out Reputation with Scavengers, I brought a blue pearl with me while looking for the Garbage and gave it to a Scavenger for a light, and then gave another one a silver pearl and they didn't attack me :>

I noticed that these dreams don't seem to have a set order to them? I thought maybe they'd be flashbacks at first. First it was one with Iggy, then there was one with Survivor's family, then another where Survivor's family disappeared. The one with the ghosts makes me think that Survivor thinks they're dead by now which is just. Ough, ouchie. :( (Although it does give me vibes of the ending of "9" for some reason). And the second one is MAYBE a continuation of the first Iggy dream? It's the only one Iggy appeared in, idk what the blue thing is but it makes me think of 'I'm Blue Da Ba Dee Da Ba Da' and it's pretty ^-^ I want to find ittttt. AND THE LITTLE WEE HEAD TILT. AGH I WANT A SLUGCAT IRL

Anywayssss there's the Rainworld update for today, apologies if these get annoying at all! Heading back to the Industrial District tomorrow to find more pearls and get to the Garbage Wastes ( MAYBE find Spike again. Idk I don't think my reputation with lizards is good rn and I want the Scavengers to be buddies :( )

also to answer your question from yesterday: slugpups are baby slugcats!! you can unlock them by progressing through the game on your own (completing gourmands food quest then ending the campaign at journeys end is how i believe you unlock them) you can also just turn on slugpup spawns without completing the food quest in the remix menu

slugpups are only in survivor, hunter, and gourmands campaigns, and in every region theres a different chance for a slugpup to spawn, subterranean and pipyards being the highest chances ! you can only have two slugpups at a time though, but may i warn you, one slugpup is already enoughhh, i named mine marshmallow and i love him but sometimes its hard to keep him safe in combat 😭😭 also he decided to be a really close color to survivor so i cant tell if its me or him being grabbed by lizards

apparently industrial complex is the best place to search for slugpups, because it has a small number of shelters, its easy to travel between shelters too :3

also, slugpups deal the same amount of damage that monk does, hes just a baby :( (hes probably only adult-sized because when the game came out there werent slugpups)

Day 5 of Familiaugust with 'Three's a Set' brings the Weaverlings of Hollow Knight!

Found with the Weaversong Charm, these fells do excellent chip damage to anything they hit, and are-- of course-- cute buddies to have around when you're in need of some companions. I've always liked little fellas you can summon, whether or not they're for combat purposes.

Lurien is VERY VERY VERY protective and doting of Ernest (his butler) he will literally move heaven and earth just to see the boy smile he loves him very very much :]

lurien has a HUGE sweet tooth. he especially likes cookies and maple syrup. give him pancakes drowned in maple syrup and he will love you forever

Alba (the white lady) is a chronic child adopter. so far she's got marmu, dryaa, hornet (kinda) and lurien but shes probably semi-adopted the rest of the knights as well (plus offscreen shes taken in multiple orphans/abandoned grubs and cared for them until they were able to find new permanent homes. why didnt she just keep them you may ask ? because up until the pure vessel fiasco pk had a strict No Babies Allowed policy )

radiance and pk used to be good buddies !! until pk decided power was way cooler than friendship and totally didnt turn all of radiance's people/children against her and also kick her off her own land. radiance is very very hurt/angry about this as you may guess

kinda continued from the precious statement, radiance was actually a decent ruler ! while she probably did keep some bugs under her hive mind she let most of the inhabitants live freely under their own will (namely the mantis tribe and mosskin tribe). she was also good friends with unn

less a headcanon/au trivia and more an accidental observation but alba is very similar to camila (toh) whoopsy-daisy (chronic child adopter, probably a nerd, can and will bash your skull in if you mess with her/her kids)

alba was not aware of, nor did she consent to the whole "baby pit" thing. at some point she even directly told pk that she wanted any impure vessels to be kept and cared for as normal children. however after she got infected and sealed away, pk kinda,,, didnt do this.

mightve mentioned this earlier but the dreamers are adopted siblings :)

Compared Child by Jubyphonic summarizes lurien and monomons backstories and relationship fairly well : )

all three of the dreamers are mom friends, but to varying degrees. lurien is mostly a mom to ernest/basically anyone younger or smaller than him. he does occasionally show protectiveness towards herrah and monomon but very rarely. herrah is generally pretty edgy and hardened but will show some degree of caring/protectiveness towards anyone she truly trusts (members of deepnest, hornet, and lurien/monomon.) monomon is a mom friend to pretty much Everyone, but especially lurien. shes also that one friend that will actively threaten you to make sure you eat three meals a day and drink plenty of water

luriens mental/emotional stability, on a scale of 1-10, would probably be a -5. this man has been through some rough stuff please hug him

pk is semi-corrupted by void :) totally not inspired by belos' goop monster thing mmmm nope,,

Shade Lord Ghost Drabbles: Hiding

I had a request for a followup to Hallownest's Hero and I asked for a specific prompt and that's what this is. They asked for: "ghost has to deal with some new bugs to hollow nest trying to worship them cult style". It ended up being a drabble so I decided why not go ahead and make it a new drabble collection fic on Ao3 because those are always fun and there's more that can be explored here. So if you have a request for something that takes place in this post Hallownest's Hero timeline, feel free to go ahead and send a request and I'll get to it when I can.

“Ah, hello. I didn’t expect to see you down here.”

Ghost looked up to see Quirrel entering in through the tunnel that led back towards Central Deepnest. In the hot spring water, Grimmchild chirped in greeting, splashing the water with his wings which seemed to be getting bigger every day.

“Hello too you too,” Quirrel said as he continued in to settle into the water too, placing his nail safely beside the pool. He then looked back up at Ghost, cramped and crowded into the back of the cave. “What are you doing down here? If I may ask?”

“Hiding.” Other than the Abyss, Deepnest was the best place to hide since so few were comfortable coming down here. The Abyss would’ve been roomier but then they wouldn’t have been able to keep Grimmchild along for company. And the sight of their siblings broken shells was ever an unpleasant one.

“Hmm. No offense but what could you possibly be hiding from?”

“The Godseeker and her followers.” More bugs had found their way into Hallownest recently and she’d pulled them a lot of them in with her fanaticism and the whole thing was quickly becoming a bit much.

“Ah yes, I saw the shrine they built for you up in Dirtmouth. It was brilliant craftsmanship for sure. I wasn’t sure if you would like it though and I guess I was right.”

Ghost nodded. Being worshipped, especially so ardently, was the biggest downside to being a god. The ability to speak made it still worth it, even without counting everything they’d saved via taking this route to destroy the Radiance.

“I presume you’ve already talked to her about not liking the whole worshipping thing?”

Ghost nodded again. They’d talked to her and their other worshipers several times but none of them ever listened. The best Ghost had been able to convince them to do was to stop bothering Hollow and Buddy for being siblings to ‘the Shade Lord’ or ‘Lord of Shades’ as Ghost was now being referred to as primarily by their worshippers.

“You want me to try talking to her too?”

“She won’t listen.” Especially since Quirrel was mostly just a normal bug and not a god.

“Hmm… probably not, huh? She’s a bit uh… obsessed you being the Shade Lord. Which is a pretty cool title and one you’ve more than earned. Certainly not one I envy though, too much responsibility and pressure. You’ll never have to worry about me treating you much different though.” Quirrel winked and lifted his hands to make a heart with his fingers towards Ghost.

Ghost lifted a pair of their own hands to return the gesture. “Thanks.” Friends were better than worshippers any day.

New Hollow Knight Story!

My first long story and first written piece about Hollow Knight!

This one is inspired from an ask from @arty-cakes and all their art in general,

as well as many others in the community, including @scribbleshanks , @fly-sky-high-hollow-knight , @payasita​ , @soft-quirrel , @chipper-smol, @mipexch and many many many other fantastic artists that would simply take too long to list out. Just wanted to thank these amazing people before I start. ^^

PS: Unsure what title to give, I'm just gonna use a cliché one until someone gives me a better one lmao

The adventure

"Bury the knight with her broken nail, bury the... pri.. priest?"

"In his tattered gown, Myla"

"Oh, right, right, thanks Clothy"

Chapter 1: Myla and Cloth

The two of them walk out of the mines to the orange, blindingly bright crossroads. Myla sits on top of Cloth, drowsily holding a pickaxe while Cloth is in a combat-ready position, holding out her weapon and traversing through the crossroads.

"This place gives me the creeps, the mines are much more peaceful, I hate orange" said Myla, in a resentful tone.

"Its dangerous around here, we should get up as fast as we can" said Cloth in reassurance.

"I'd throw my pickaxe at them if it wasn't for the blunted head from all the mining" replied Myla, joyfully.

With chuckles and giggles, they ascend the platforms and up the well to Dirtmouth

"Oho, what brings you two up here?" Elderbug, surprised

"Nothing much, we came to see Hornet! Myla's a little sick so we was wanted to check her out and make sure she's fine" replied Cloth as Myla climbs down her club carefully.

"Ah I see, I'm sure she'll be fine! Hornet's in sly's shop, they're probably training with the knight, would like to sit for a while?"

"Hmm sure we ca-"

As Cloth accepted the offer, a loud "-SHAW!" is heard from Sly's basement

Myla, intrigued, "But I wanna see what they're doing! Can we go watch?"

"If you say so, Myla, --Elderbug you wanna come with?" said Cloth, bringing Myla up her head.

"I'm fine, combat's not my cup of tea. You two have fun down there!"

And like that, they wave their goodbyes and part their ways, with the Cloth duo going into Sly's shop.

Chapter 2: The action

Myla and Cloth cheerily descend to the basement, loud metal clangs can be heard even outside the shop

"You're agitated today arent you, little ghost" said Hornet, panting in a parry pose.

The knight shrugged and signed the words "I guess", learning the lesson of not attacking during enemy parries.

As the knight charges up their nail art, Hornet breaks out of parry and uses a spike attack, suspending string-spike balls in the arena. The knight releases a powerful cyclone slash, the one they just learned from Mato, slashing the spiky balls into the corner of the room

Myla let out a "Woah" as the knight approaches Hornet, preparing a dash slash.

*Clang*

The nail hitting was so loud it could be heard from deepnest. Startled by the sound, Cloth hugged Myla closely and they closed their eyes from reflex.

Opening their eyes, Sly is seen in between the knight and hornet, with his nail stopping knight's nail from hitting Hornet. How did he get there so fast?

"Good job knight, nice timing on the art." commented Sly, satisfied.

"Hey that's no fair, you already beat me twice!" exclaimed Hornet, exhausted.

The knight lower their nail, and notice the Myla duo standing next to the ladder.

"Hi", waved the knight, the easiest sign language they know that even Myla would understand.

Hornet sits down and turns her head over, while Sly walks toward the Clyla duo.

"That was awesome!" said Cloth, thrilled.

The ghost smiled, signing "Thanks" to the duo as Myla jumps up and down excitedly.

Regaining her strength in mere seconds, Hornet stands up and swings over, "It'd be better if I won, ghost is way too strong. -What are you two doing here?"

"Ah, right, Myla is a little sick, she's experiencing some memory lost and drowsiness" Cloth says, as Myla eagerly touches the knight's upgraded Coiled nail, intrigued as always.

"I think the infection is creeping into the mines, we should give her some treatment" said Hornet, concerned.

With that, Sly clears off the floor of dust and spikes and the 5 of them ascend the ladder.

Chapter 3:

Chapter 3.1: Lifeblood

The 5 of them come out of the shop to meet Elderbug, the cool dude.

"Oho we got quite the party here, you guys heading down?" said Elderbug joyfully, holding a flower in his hands.

"Yeah, we're gonna give the Mantis bros a visit, Myla needs some lifeblood, she's a little sick." replied Hornet, causally.

"Oh I hope you're well little guy," Elderbug said to Myla, patting Myla's head as she delicately touches the petals of the flower, "Safe journey down there you guys, the crossroads give a stink."

"Thanks Elderbug, we'll be careful. Sly would you like to come with us?"

"Uhh, sure thing! It's been a while since I've visited my buddies", said Sly.

With that, they descend the well into the crossroads.

Chapter 3.2: Mantis village

"Myla, are you okay? Is it the mushrooms or the acid?" Cloth said while the knight looks up in concern.

"No no, I'm fine, just a little sleepy" Myla yawned, adjusting her sit.

"Take a nap then little guy, we'll be there in no time" said Cloth and Hornet, almost in unison

They chuckled, entering the mantis village.

A mantis warrior bows upon seeing the knight, welcoming their entry, the knight politely bows back.

They travel through the village and gets to the bottom of the village, where they meet the Mantis lords. They stand up and bow while the 5 travellers bow back.

"It's been a while, what brings you lots here?", said the tallest mantis.

"If we could, we are here to take some Lifeblood, Myla is a little ill" said Hornet while the knight looks at the sleeping Myla on top of Cloth.

Due to the lack of care, most lifeblood cocoons in Hallownest have died down, remaining only 2 active and reproducing cocoons: The one in Mantis village surviving due to the care from the Mantis tribe; and a man-made cocoon Joni's repose, an artificial breeding center made by the knight with the power of both Joni's blessing and lifeblood core.

"Ah why of course, we wish the little one well!"

As the knight carried Myla and climbed up the wall to the lifeblood cocoon, Hornet proceeded to chat with the Mantis lords.

"How's the deepnest going? Still giving you guys trouble?"

"Ah though there are occasional intruders, they seem to have calmed down after..." She paused, "after your mother ascended" continued the other Mantis lord

"Its okay, I'm over it, the knight gotta do their mission afterall." sighed Hornet.

"Is the little one getting infected? Is she okay?" said the tallest Mantis, shifting the center of attention to alleviate the atmosphere

"Oh, yes, the infection from crossroads are creeping into the mines and Myla is mildly affected. I'm sure she'll be fine with us around" said Cloth, optimistically.

"The crossroads are infected? Since when?" exclaimed one of the lords.

The knight, standing on the ledge of the Lifeblood cocoon, turned down and signed "Dreamers"

"I see, though with the temple being in the center, it's no wonder the place gets flooded. Please wish Elderbug well for us when you return to Dirtmouth."

"Will do!" said Cloth and the knight nodded in agreement.

Time passes while the party chats with the Mantis Lords, especially Sly as he's a newcomer to the village.

"You guys doing good up there?" said Cloth, "Need our help?"

The knight gives them a thumbs-up as they carefully cutopen the Lifeblood seed with their nail, feeding the Lifeblood to Myla.

"She looks sleepy," commented by one of the Mantis, "Does she need a place to sleep? We have a bench in our village protected by one of our senior warriors."

As she says this, the knight waves their tiny hands, holding Myla's pickaxe on one hand and pointing to the blunt unsharpened edges on her pickaxe with the other.

"How observant, little ghost, you want to find the Nailsmith?" Replied Hornet.

Hollow Knight part 28

Yet another gameplay, whoo! Today I was just going through the Ancient Basin and I had to fight a hard enemy but at the end I got a new ability and I can now double jump!! It is so cool. There are some places I can now go to because of it. But I also unlocked a Hidden station and the Stag Nest so I went there.

From the bench where I left off last time I went over the giant gap using one of my abilities.

I ended up in a labyrinth where I had to either kill or avoid some enemies that spat out acid. Once I made my way around I could create a shortcut across.

I made it to the end and had to fight a Broken Vessel. It looked like me kinda but had been infected with that orange stuff. It was hard and I died. A lot. It took a while for me to beat.

During one of my times where I had died I went back down to get some Soul so I could start my fight with some. And I found an area I had missed and found a Simple Key.

I finally won against the Broken Vessel after a hard battle and went to the next room and got a new ability Monarch Wings and it enables me to double jump. So cool!!

I went back and the Broken Vessel body had those wheel things indicating a Dream so I used my Dream Nail and went inside. It turned out to be a battle against a Lost Kin. And it was HARD. I was not able to win. I tried several times and then looked it up and it is apparently one of the hardest bosses, so I just gave up.

Continuing back I went up an area using my new double jump and found a worm baby!

Further back into the Ancient Basin and went over to the area where I could double jump up to get to the Palace Grounds. It was empty except for a corpse in white armour halfway through. 

The next part was a Hidden Station with a lone toll machine that I paid for to activate the stag coach. He was excited because he found the way to the place he was born, so I could go there now too.

I took the stag coach to the Forbidden Crossroads to try to go to the shop down there but was greeted by a change in there. It was now Infected Crossroads with the orange stuff that had been down in Deepnest. It was all over and some of the enemies had been infected and were stronger and attacked differently.

After I went down to the store in the newly Infected Crossroads (he didn’t have anything new). I went down to the City of Tears because I was looking online on what the Pale Ore was for and turned out it was to upgrade my nail, so I went to the Nailsmith but I needed more money. So I went to the store that buys things from me but he wasn’t there. I had to go look for him by the fountain and after I talked to him he went back and I could sell my stuff.

I then went back to the Nailsmith and paid for my nail upgrade. Nice. I can still upgrade it but I need two pale ores for it. I’ll need to find more then.

I then took the stag coach to the Stag Nest. Th stag said it brought home memories. Glad to take you home buddy.

I walked through and there was a bunch of dead stags but I did find a soul vessel piece. Further in I found a short cut to the Howling Cliffs.

I found an empty  eggshell and I went to tell the stag and he said that there was hope that there were more out there. You may not be the last stag after all.

I then took the stag coach to the Resting grounds to see if it was possible to upgrade my Dream Nail if that was a thing. Turns out it wasn’t but I did open up a new area for collecting 200 dream wheel things. And also some other stuff.

The door that was now open lead to a Spirits’ Glade. There was a bunch of graves that I could talk to but there was nothing dangerous.

I found a wheel tree and activated and had to go around the graves to collect all the red orbs. When I got them all the tree activated and had a message “Sacred memories, Honored Souls.”

I then went to visit the Worm Daddy and I got a bunch of money. He made it rain!! Look at them all! There are so many worm babies.

I then went back to the City of Tears and I was able to use the Simple Key I had to open the door that was up on a ledge.

I turned out to be in the Pleasure House after going up in an elevator.

I went to the left and found the ghost of a singing bug named Marissa. I could sit and listen to her. It was really pretty.

Gasp! It’s the thief who stole my money at the fake bank!! I went up to the next level and was at a hot spring and Milibelle was there and she said she had spent all the money she had taken and wanted me to just leave.

I just hit her and a bunch of money came out, the liar. She wasn’t dead though, just curled up in her shell. But I got a bunch of money. Ancestor worship is a big thing. They’re not so much into the gods and all, instead they venerate the dead. The big trilobite shrine hidden in the Beast’s Den? An ancestor shrine for the old sire’s family. Herrah paid her respects there, too, as did most people who regularly worked in the building.

Speaking of, I’m not entirely sure what the old sire looked like, but I think he was on that almost crustacean-y side like the trilobite, or like God Tamer’s buddy.

Part of Herrah’s rise to power involved an attempt to take down Deepnest’s caste system from the inside. She got folks on her side by understanding them and seeking to unite Deepnest. It worked rather well, from the Devouts’ being so, well, devoted to her, and how universally loved Hornet is.

There is a surprising amount of mobility through the caste system. Though it is designated by species at birth, it’s possible for someone to end up in a caste primarily constructed of those outside their species. There’s downward mobility, of course, but one can sort of work up to the top, like Herrah did. However, her species means that if she had a kid with just someone random who wasn’t nobility, they’d have to work up just like she did. The Pale King’s genes were basically her way to skip that entire process and keep her line at the top of the pecking order until there’s no pecking order to speak of. Nobility doesn’t beat godsblood.

In Deepnest, children have to earn their adult names, usually some time in adolescence. This is celebrated through the entire village, with a parent, mentor, etc. reintroducing the child to everyone they know by their new name. (Hornet, of course, didn’t get this ceremony, having gotten her name after the Weavers’ flight.)

Before receiving an adult name, children have a nickname, usually something taken from an observation of the child’s behavior. Hornet’s was The Gendered Child because she decided fairly early on that she was a girl and was very vocal about this. Herrah’s was Keen Little Beast, usually shortened to Keen.

The Devout carve the three eyes into their front claws. It’s all tough plating so it doesn’t hurt, but the design doesn’t quite match up with where their eyes actually are. It’s close enough that it’s about as obstructive as wearing glasses, though.

Weft and Warp are ridiculously common Weaver names. Loom is a close third.

While Weavers often have strands of Soul in their silk to work magic, Hornet’s style threw them off. She doesn’t naturally produce normal spider silk like they do. Her silk is pure Soul. It was quite a time, figuring out how to teach her.

Weavers only rarely use looms. They’ll use any close surface to anchor their weaving. Hornet’s embarrassed that she needs one.

Baby’s First Web is to them like Baby’s First Steps are to us.

Though like the rest of Hallownest/bug culture, there’s not really any nudity taboo, it’s rare to see a naked Deepnest denizen outside of, like, a hot spring. They love to show off their fiber arts skills.

It’s common for children’s nightclothes to have little stories woven into the hem; the Weaver language is written in textiles, so the construction of the garment and the story itself have to play nicely together, and nightclothes tend to be simple. Plus, giving kids stories to read not only keeps them quiet at night, but gives them a chance to learn reading.

Village life is very communal. There’s decorum standards, but public figures like Herrah are expected to be easily accessible. Bugs of all sorts will leave their children with Midwife, that service isn’t limited to one particular species or caste. If someone can’t hunt, someone will hunt for them.
