So.. A chat with some friends on Discord made me realize something with Gozyuger's Mecha Gravyard. A lot of the Sentai Mechs weren't just mechs. They where alive. Boondario, the Kiramai Stones, the Kikainoid Mechs, the Ryusoulger mechs, the Buddyroids, the Shugods, the Kroyuger mechs. Hell the Magiranger's where the mechs themselves. That kind of makes the graveyard even more messed up when you realize a lot of those busted up robots are actually corpses of mechanical beings and Sentai Legends.... @rpking99

Shockingly dont think ive mentioned this before but i love the little interactions the gobus trio outside of their spoken lines like in the bg of shots and also love the background interactions they have with the buddyroids and nicks suit actor.. the cast overall have such good chemistry its very easy to believe that theyre close and care about each other and work well as a team

in a world fully reliant on a single source of miracle energy

the honest to god millennium bug seeks to steal that energy to help it escape from another dimension, via use of a frenchman and a bunch of household appliances (their name should totally be Bugrus or Buglass or something along those lines right, officially naming them Vaglass is a Toei Romanisation fuck-up, right?)

only three people with highly generic powers and highly unusual weaknesses have the power to play the highest stakes game of tower defence ever devised

and in the part of the show IM watching this for, three robots try not to let their anxieties over their idiot buddies kill them

yeah the main trio of this one haven't quiiite grabbed me as characters yet

i dont dislike them or anything, i just haven't felt a spark yet

except with maybe hiromu, it's interesting to have a red ranger who's kinda blunt and standoffish, even if none of the others are compensating for his humourlessness really

the buddyroids though? hell yeah i would watch a show that's just them fighting enter's ability to speak terrible french

enter does at seem pretty charismatic though, and while messiah is a very Generic Big Bad kinda floating head, his tendency towards screaming his orders is fun to me

i do enjoy the established mechanics at play here, though i will admit to being a little worried that the show might get hamstrung by how rigid they are

how many ways can you have episodes structured around a mech battle to stop the villains doing the Big Succ before it gets boring?

i could be wrong, and i hope i am, but hey

however, that mech action? fucking COOL

so yeah, cautiously optimistic might be the best way to describe me going into this

despite the fact that you may have noticed i dont have as much as usual to say about the individual episodes this time

other than the fact that if my co-worker and surrogate brother broke a wall trying to punch my head in while acting like a cartoon villain, i too would burst into tears and get rather nervous around him for a while

super sentai, giving kids a fear of hospitals and injections since 1976

relatable scenarios: have YOU ever become a cartoon villain if you grip to hard? have YOU ever collapsed from lack of sweets? or have YOU ever frozen at the sight of a chicken? we have a special-ops programme just for you!!!

I REALLY LIKED IT A LOT the characters and their arcs were really solid i loved seeing how smiley hiromu was at the end compared to how he started out

enter was a really good villain i think they made a good choice to pivot to him vs the first iteration of the messiah where hes kind of a standard cartoon evil hungry for power for the sake of power, to enter trying to be a real boy and failing because he doesnt understand the series thesis i think its a much more like. obviously not like excusable but sympathetic? motive in a way. like you understand why hes doing the things hes doing and it's obvious the ways his logic is like. twisted

with escape.... im torn on this because i thought him nerfing her into treating him like she treated messiah and then realising that actually he hates this and wants her to go back to the way he was before only to find out shes irrevocably corrupted and he can only bring her back wrong repeatedly and through that experiencing unpleasant human emotion for himself was a really interesting story For Enter but im also upset that her autonomy gets violated like that and that she never really gets to be a character in her own right outside of her subservience to male characters, first messiah and then enter. for what it's worth im glad that ryuji and yoko do recognize how fucked up whats happening to her is and i think i did like that she doesn't have a redemption arc but yeah. weird feelings all round on that one

i feel like the overall structure is less one season and more two distinct seasons with a quick gavan break in the middle and i wish id gone in with that mind because it definitely lost a little momentum for me when the second half starts even though it did pay off in the end

i wish in the second half there'd been a little more focus on the busters motivations because i felt like they spent a lot of time on that in the first half with yoko and hiromu wanting to save their parents, and i think i would have liked more time dedicated to them dealing with the fact that their parents are now Officially For Sure dead and what's driving them forward after the fact. jin and possibly kuroki too on that fact.

i liked that hiromu never actually gets over his fear of chickens

i really liked the buddyroids a lot but im predisposed to enjoying characters with overexaggerated personalities. though it did mean J was in kind of a weird place being part of the main ranger team while not being developed as the other characters and staying a sillyguy. like it would have been weird if he was too but it put him in a weird position i think. i really liked him a lot though

ummmm i can't think of anything else atm. thats my immediate thoughts. tldr really good series yasuko kobayashi you madwoman youve done it again. she really loves to sneak those reveals up on you

Watching go-busters now and I instantly fall in love with Hiromu and Cheeda's friendship. Also damn those rangers are basically their parents' little soldiers.

Hiromu and mr bike guy cheetah man Nick are a wonderful pair. Hiromu is so harsh to Nick but its only bc he wants him to be his best self, following the same advice Nick gave him as a young lad uwahhhh. all the Buddyroids and their busters have the cutest relationships. robo nannies.......

Also yeah. literal child solider sentai lol. gobus is so cute a lot of time it almost makes you forget The Horrors. and there are a lot of Horrors

Random headcanons for when one of the King-Ohger’s predecessor teams end up on Tikyuu

Shinkenger: The King Ohgers see the Shinkengers' fealty to the Shiba family and start arguing about which one of them deserves the same treatment

Dekaranger: Rita hears about the jury system that the SPD rangers answer to and is quite interested about it. They convince the Dekarangers to vouch for them as an observer

Go-ongers: Like everyone, the King ohgers are baffled by the Engines. Machalcon's existence basically makes Yanma's head explode

Ryusoulger: When they learn how old the Ryusoulgers really are they wonder if Jeremy was descended from one of their tribes because of his own slowed aging

what can i say, im currently coasting on some free time and a burning desire to get through the part of the show ive heard things dont happen in

and boy dont they happen!!!

but they keep almost happening

vaglass spent 10 episodes cooking up a new megazord, and it turned out to be a reasonably strong bug one that got outclassed immediately

extra rangers!!! beet buster is a great time and keeps threatening to have something interesting happen, and stag buster,,,, well,,,,,,,, i think i might be in love with beet j stag,,,,,,,, sadly all he sees,,,,, is himself,,

messiah had fun exactly one time, forgot about taking over the world and created a woman who is in fact allowed to step on me, all for the promise that enter might finally snap in the future

this leg of the show is a true exercise in lining up dominoes

youd think with so many plot points about to kick off, something would happen

but not really

that's like,,,, 3 major potential shakeups if we're being generous? with other things being teased and character development happening at the speed of an advancing glacier

and im not exactly tense

im more just sort of trapped in a sense of desperation waiting for the show to deliver on any of its promises

but ive been told, that by stopping for today at episode 27

i have parked myself around about just before things actually kick off for real this time

because this show genuinely does have promise!!!

i dont hate my time with it!!!

ive ever so gradually been coming around on our original rangers

the buddyroids have been a great time

beet j stag is the greatest fictional character ever conceived

enter is a fantastic villain and once he inevitably snaps it will be glorious

i just had to get through the mire of "hey, so the new rangers have joined with their new mechs and are teasing the possibility of everyone being able to break into hyperspace one day, which could be huge for everyone, and you think they're going to like, complete a narrative thread like these shows normally do, while leaving some of it as promise for later, but NOPE NONE OF IT RESOLVED NOW FUCK YOU IT'S TIME FOR THE EPISODE WHERE GO-BUSTER ACE IS SLOWLY WINCHED DOWN A BIG HOLE FOR 20 MINUTES, FUCK YOU"

i did enjoy the movie though

pretty typical sentai movie, but that means i had fun :D
