With Friends Like These
The office is deserted – its 7 PM on a Friday – so Caroline’sstartled by the sound she hears coming from the hall. It’s a staccato series oftaps. Heels, eating up the distance quickly, and she rolls her chair back,grabbing her phone from the corner of the desk just in case someone’s bleeding.
She’s about to go and see what’s happening, when Kat barrelsin. Her eyes are wide with what Caroline suspects is glee, her hair a wildwindblown mass of curls. Her jackets only half buttoned and she tosses asideher purse, rushing towards Caroline. “You will not believe what I just heard!”
Caroline lets herself be shaken, taking another confusedlook at Kat’s dishevelment. “Did you run from the bar? Thought you were goingto try to seduce the new guy.”
Katherine looks offended. “Try? Please. Mason’s a sure bet.He’ll keep until next week.”
“Wow,” Caroline drawls. “Something came up that’s kept youfrom guaranteed sex? Must be big.”
Katherine lets go of her, tossing her hair over her shoulderand letting out an irritated huff. “Yeah, yeah, mock me. We don’t all get to scheduleregular freaky married sex.”
It takes a fair amount of willpower not to tear her eyesaway and Caroline lifts her chin stubbornly. Katherine might know far too many details about her and Klaus’ sex life butthat was only because Caroline gets a little over share-y when tequila’sinvolved in a girl’s night out. Klaus is shameless enough not to care, evenwhen Kat’s comments get overly pointed. If anything, he leans into it, lets hishands linger and does his best to make Caroline blush. Caroline is working onbuilding up the same aplomb in the face of Kat’s suggestive smirks and taunts.
“You seem to do just fine in the freaky sex department,” shesnipes back.
Katherine grins, slow and very pleased with herself. “Ireally do.”
Caroline groans, walking over to the couch that lines onewall of her office. “I do not want to have this conversation with you.”
Her dry spell is hours away from ending and she’s really looking forward to it.
Klaus has been gone for ten days, dealing with inspectionsfor the new hotel the company is opening in London. Caroline’s team is busy puttingtogether room concepts so she hadn’t been able to justify taking the time awayto accompany him.
She likes phone sex as much as the next girl whose husbandhas a hot accent but it got old after a few days. She misses having a warm bodyto roll into at night; the way he wakes he scrapes his morning beard againsther shoulder when she grumbles about the alarm.
“Someone’s cranky!” Katherine sings. She circles Caroline’sdesk, helping herself to the bourbon that’s stashed in the lowest drawer. “Mynews might not help you.”
Oh joy.
Caroline slouches low, letting her legs flop ratherungracefully, “And yet, you rushed all the way back here to tell me about it?”
“It’s just too hilarious. I couldn’t not.”
Katherine’s sense of humor is a weird thing, an acquiredtaste, so Caroline braces herself. “Alright, hit me.”
“Uh uh. Let me set the scene.”
“And people say I’m dramatic.”
Kat ignores the complaint, lifting the bottle high. “There Iam, in the ladies room…”
“Taking off your panties so you could stuff them in Mason’spocket?”
“Please. Like you’ve never used that move.”
Caroline could honestly say she hadn’t (Klaus likes toremove her lingerie himself) but Katherine’s already continuing her tale. Sheperches on the edge of Caroline’s desk, wiggling in an effort to getcomfortable.
So it’s not going to be a short story. Caroline presses herlips together, holding in a sigh, glancing at the clock. She’s supposed to grabKlaus from the airport at eleven and she’d planned go home and change intosomething easier to remove beforehand. Hopefully Katherine can resist the urgeto embellish too extensively.
“I’m minding my own business, about to flush, when I hear afamiliar name.”
“Yours?”
“Nope, yours. Preceded and followed by some very colorfuldescriptors.” She pauses expectantly, eagerly watching for Caroline’s reaction.
Only to be disappointed when Caroline shrugs, emitting onlya dismissive, “Somehow I’ll survive.” The last time she’d really been overlyconcerned with other people liking her she’d owned pom poms.
Katherine, however, isn’t finished.
“Really? Even when I tell you that our little bathroomgossiper had very complimentary things to say about your hubs?”
Her hands curl into the couch’s cushions, a teeny flare ofjealousy flaring bright.
She’s an only child and she gets a little possessive, okay?Klaus is into it. He’s also no stranger to getting growly and shooting murdereyes and staking a claim and, since he’s got a bajillion siblings, he doesn’t evenhave the same justification for being bad at sharing.
Those incidents usually result in an immediate need forprivacy (or the reasonable facsimile found behind a locked office door or thebackseat of a car). The next day they’ll sleep in, there will be hickies on herthighs and scratches on his back, and they’ll eat dessert for breakfast.
Honestly, Caroline kind of loves that particular ritual,knows very well that Klaus does too.
“Not everyone thinks Klaus is awful,” Caroline points out.
“Because most people are dumb and lack my excellent taste.”
Caroline eyes the bottle, seriously considering chugging abit and just calling a cab when it’s time to collect Klaus. She really doesn’twant to be drunk for their reunion but, if Kat doesn’t hurry up and get to apoint, it might be her best option. “I love you so I’m going to ignore the factthat you kinda just called me dumb.”
Katherine scoffs, “You’re not dumb, just dickmatized.”
It’s probably a good thing she’s not drinking because shewould have choked. Caroline’s laugh sputters out, grows in volume, and she hasto cover her mouth when it becomes hard to control herself. Her eyes water alittle as she finally manages to stop giggling, “Yeah, I’m totally tellingKlaus that you said that. He’ll take it as a compliment.”
“Literally the only nice thing I’ll ever say about him isthat you’re far more bearable and less uptight than you used to be. I creditthe regular orgasms.”
She and Katherine had been hired at about the same time and,in the beginning, hadn’t gotten along overly well. Kat now headed The MikaelsonGroup’s marketing team, was a wizard at luring in celebs and influencers andmaking their hotels a coveted destination. Caroline had worked her way up torun a design team. It’s how she’d met Klaus (and they’d butted heads too in theearly days) coordinating with him and his architect minions.
“I, too, am a big fan,” Caroline admits. “Though, honestly,you should really give cuddling a try. Totally relaxing.”
“Ew, pass.”
It’s an argument they’ve had before.
“Anyway,” Katherine says, so loudly that Carolineinstinctively glances towards the door. “Back to my story. Greta Martin thinksyou should stop being a total bitch to Klaus in meetings. Oh, and she’s alsoplanning on banging him.”
Caroline sits up, now outraged. “I am not…”
Katherine cuts her off, “You have been a little snippy thisweek.”
Only because Klaus has been baiting her.
“That’s just how we are. He pokes, I prod. He’s annoyinglysmug, all ‘oh, aren’t I the cleverest?’ and I like to knock him down.”
“Verbal foreplay is your thing,” Katherine says, adding aknowing nod.
She throws her hands up, collapsing back again. “Exactly! Mymarriage is freaking great and if that…”
Again, she doesn’t get to work up to a proper rant. Superannoying.
“That’s the best part!” Katherine crows. “She has no ideayou and Klaus are married! Talk about dumb people.”
Well, that’s mollifying. Slightly. Caroline will just haveto make things clear. Plans begin to form. She discards the racier ones (unlessGreta proves to be unwilling to take a hint). She twists her wedding bandabsently, “How has she not noted the rings?”
“Forget the rings. How she hasn’t noted Klaus’ doofybesotted face whenever you walk into a room is the bigger issue. Maybe sheneeds glasses?”
Maybe Caroline will get her assistant to shoot Greta anemail detailing the company’s excellent insurance coverage on Monday.
She hears the bottle clink and she shakes off her mentallists, shooting Katherine a glare. “You know, it would have been easy for youto clear up her misconceptions in that bathroom.”
Kat’s brows rise and she shoots Caroline a look like she’ssaid something totally insane. “And deprive myself of prime workplace drama?Please. You know how bored I get on Wednesdays when I have to sit in those dumblegal meetings.”
Caroline’s displeasure must read on her face because Kattosses her a bright smile, leaning forward and offering the bottle. Her toneturns placating, “Oh, relax, Cupcake. It’s harmless. You’ll probably forget allabout this little snafu over the weekend.”
Caroline’s does have big plans.
“Maybe,” she allows grudgingly. She stands, straighteningher pencil skirt. “Speaking of, I should go home and make myself pretty.”
“You’re going to do that gross airport make out thing, aren’tyou?”
Caroline smiles, not trying to hide the slightly mockingedge to it. “Usually, yeah. But Elijah’s not a guy who tolerates a scene.”
She relishes the freezing of Katherine’s body, the wideningof her dark eyes. Her hand flexes, looking for the bottle that had recentlybeen clutched there.
Caroline withholds it, setting it down and out of reach.
She’s not entirely sure what had gone down at the Christmasparty last year (Katherine was way better at keeping secrets no matter how muchliquor was applied) but she knows Kat’s red lip had been rubbed off and Elijah’svest had been buttoned incorrectly when she and Klaus had met the odd couple atthe elevator bank.
Kat had twitched a little at the mention of Elijah’s nameever since.
She adopts her sweetest expression, “Maybe the legalmeetings will be more exciting when Elijah’s leading them in person, hmm?”
Katherine’s mouth opens. Closes. She wiggles her toes to gether heels back in place before hopping off the desk. “I need to…”
She doesn’t finish her sentence, stalking out of the office.Caroline watches her go, both satisfied and bursting with curiosity. A speechlessKatherine Pierce? Caroline never thought she’d see the day.
She makes a mental note to tell Klaus, to wheedle until heagrees to pump Elijah for info. She didn’t often get bored at work, not whenshe could just pop into Klaus’ office and poke around in his projects. But hehad another trip on his calendar next month.
She won’t turn down a little in office entertainment whilehe’s gone.

That sibling post reminded me that Sokka and Katara are such a great example of a realistic sibling duo in media. They go from "don't even LOOK at me or I'll smack you" to "I would hide a body for you" in the same episode.
You are so right, my friend. Part of me was thinking about them when I reblogged that post because they are the perfect sibling duo and they are so criminally underrated.
I mean, it kind of makes sense for the Avatar universe (and its fanbase) to prioritize other familial dynamics. Not that Zuko and Azula’s messed up relationship is “better” just because it’s complex in a different way, but it’s… easier to talk about, I suppose. Avatar does family so well and in so many ways but it’s easy to focus on those dynamics that are truly, heartbreakingly disturbed than those that are much closer to everyday experiences. I know you didn’t bring up Zuko and Azula or any other sibling duo but I think there’s this unspoken thing that everyone would talk about them first when it comes to sibling relationships. Or about the cloudbabies, or the airbending kids, or the other great dynamics. But Sokka and Katara? Their greatness lies in the fact that they are so true to everyday experiences.

Just like the other characters, they are still part of this magical world and a war-torn era and they go through some traumatic experiences as children. But at the end of the day, they are the closest we get to a typical dynamic, despite their personal tragedies clearly shaping them. Sokka and Katara are exactly the type of siblings that post described, and you did as well. I think you chose the perfect word there by saying that they’re realistic. They represent the essence of what it’s like to have a sibling and it’s glorious in its simplicity but also showcases so many different shades of the meaning of family throughout the series.
Sokka and Katara fight. Sokka tries to impress so many people and tries to act tougher than he is, but he never does succeed with Katara. She knows him; she’s known him her whole life. She knows where he’s vulnerable and insecure but also knows where he shines and what he’s genuinely the best at. His big boy act doesn’t work on her, both because she knows how immature he can be and both because she already knows what he’s capable of. She tells him off like no one else. Katara might not be the funniest or snarkiest of the Gaang but she throws shade at Sokka like an absolute pro. She’s not afraid to tell him off and go a bit harder on him than on anyone else. He annoys her.
She annoys him. She always has to be right about everything and she can’t help but run headfirst into trouble. Katara would rather risk their incredibly important mission than make the pragmatic choice and leave some Fire Nation citizens alone. She’s stubborn and self-righteous and her sudden rage makes one wonder if in a different life she was a firebender. Sokka’s only slightly older but still older and believes he knows best. His little sister gets carried away and then ruins the fun at the worst possible moments. He knows she can be cruel and he knows the scars of the war run deeper than anything her water could heal.
They bicker more than the other members of the Gaang but it never lasts. Just like real siblings, they can go from “you drive me crazy” to, like you said, “I would hide a body for you”. More than that, they would personally kill anyone who ever harmed the other. They snark each other better than anyone else could but hurt one and the other won’t hesitate to cut you down. They are brother and sister, after all, and family is everything for the Water Tribes. Annoying each other is part of the deal.

Katara acts like a mother towards most people. It’s a combination of her nature and the trauma of losing her own mother at a young age. She stood up and filled a hole at a young age so that others would have someone to rely on. She took on a role that would help her process things too. She started taking care of her older brother at such a young age and never thought twice about loving him with the power of two people combined. He says some infuriating things and needs to learn not to take her for granted, but she loves him anyway. And it’s not like Sokka loses his sister when Katara starts acting like a mother: they still fight and share responsibilities and she still teases him relentlessly. She’ll go further with him than anyone else, push him until she realizes that he’s truly upset. She’ll comfort him about his insecurities and cheer him up by going shopping. She’ll yell at him for taking her for granted but then realizes that she’s been taking him for granted. But it’s alright because they’re brother and sister and they’ll always forgive each other.
Sokka seems like the goofy guy who’ll also plan their greatest missions and be the voice of reason when they need him the most. But he’s also a warrior, a protector of the people. When their mother dies, Katara fills in that hole. When their father leaves, Sokka has to step up and protect the tribe. More importantly, protect his sister. He’ll make fun of her waterbending and stories and idealism, but when they find a stranger he’s distrustful because he doesn’t want her to get hurt. He’ll go along with her ridiculous missions because he would never leave her. Because he would tackle the Avatar, his friend, if he ever were to hurt his sister. People think Aang or Zuko would go mad with rage if anything ever happened to Katara, but it would be Sokka who would be unstoppable in his quest to bring her to safety.
They have so many great scenes together that it’s hard to choose which one to describe in detail. Many of them subtle, just the perfect representation of how their dynamic works. Luckily, they are on the top 15 Avatar relationships list so I will get to gif some of these and write about them some more (whenever I get there, they’re quite high up). But if I were to go with one scene for now? It has to be this.

This, because it’s so heartbreaking yet simple. They both tease each other but it’s usually Sokka who’s wittier and has the perfect response. But Katara is more emotional and careless with words and at her lowest points, she hurts those who are closest. She doesn’t mean it, of course. It’s just all that anger and pain and loss that she’s been feeling and the lack of it that she sees in her brother. It’s enough to make her cruel for a moment. It’s enough to shock Sokka. It’s enough to hurt both of them as they face their shared trauma. But it’s not enough to change anything between them. Sokka, a boy who barely remembers his own mother’s face because his sister has been there for him for so long. Katara, a girl who has been acting like a mother while so deeply missing her own. He forgives her without needing to say anything.
There’s the cliff scene from “The Runaway”, of course, and in many ways, that’s even more telling of their dynamic. I do love that as well, but this one from “The Southern Raiders” always strikes me as one that would only, and could only go down between siblings. I’d like to believe that there was an off-screen apology, but even without that, there’s a quiet understanding. Only a sibling would be willing to look over something like this. You could only say this to a sibling in the first place, but it goes beyond their shared trauma. It makes them even more realistic because sibling fights get ugly and they get personal, but they never stick.
They do represent what it means to have a sibling perfectly. They might not always like each other, but they love one another.

So you might have caused me to think a lot about these two. But thank you for that, because I love them so much and would write about them anytime. They are such an underrated dynamic amidst all the family drama and betrayal and reincarnated friendships and ugly love relationships. They aren’t perfect and aren’t as high-stakes but that’s what makes them so realistic. Their bond is deeper than a lot of people give them credit for. I remember the old days of Book 1 LoK fandom and how people talked just as much about Katara’s loss of Sokka as that of Aang. Because the latter might have been the love of her life but Sokka was her brother and no one could convince me that his death didn’t hurt just as much. It’s been years since I found out that Katara’s still alive and Sokka isn’t and the pain of thinking about that is still too much.

I am maybe an ignorant person but ... I don't understand the Jonsa thing so ... I fou have time can you explain this to me .. ? And even if i'm a Jonerys shipper for years i would really like to know the Jonsa chemistery :)
Oh wow… 
The thing is I think shipping is kind of subjective to a degree. It doesn’t matter if it’s canon or not because there’ll always be a group who think it shouldn’t be canon and so on and so forth. I don’t know how to explain Jonsa to someone who doesn’t see it (not that I’m blaming you for not seeing it! Some people just don’t and that’s totally okay!) but I will try my best, Anonny. 
For me personally, it began in Season 6. I had no prior inclination for Jonsa or even an inkling of the possibility of them. Frankly, I was the most casual of Game of Thrones viewers. It took me nearly a year to actually finish watching Season 5 (but that’s mostly because my ex told me about the Sansa x Ramsay storyline and I hated it so much I refused to watch it). For me, GoT was and has always been a political fantasy drama with lots of boobs and blood. Shipping wasn’t on the cards for me at all (aside from my love for Gendrya). But then Season 6 happened and we finally, finally got a Stark reunion. Only this Stark reunion felt weird. 
First of all, Jon and Sansa had so very little interactions (ie. none) prior to this. They were the two most seemingly random Starks to meet. And yet when they hugged, Sansa nuzzled his face. At first, I thought ‘okay, well they lost everyone and this is the first person from their old life they’ve seen’ and even in retrospect I don’t see it as particularly a romantic action on their parts. But it is a weird thing to have the actors do. Even if they were always meant to be platonic, nuzzling is weird for anyone not involved romantically or sexually. I would never ever nuzzle any of my family members or my friends, but then I’m not the best comparison. I don’t like physical affection from anyone I’m not dating so lmao. Still, I was willing to overlook that because it’s Game of Thrones. Maybe they’re just trying to amp up the intensity of the scene. But then you get continued lingering looks from Jon, strange awestruck half-smiles and dim romantic atmosphere. The most bizarre shot for me though was the tent scene. Jon and Sansa had to stop in the middle of their arguing to stare at each other, chests heaving with candlelight in the background. This is Romantic Trope 101. If you had siblings arguing with each other, there’d be more angry yelling, insulting and storming off. You don’t pause to stare at each other as you struggle to catch your breath. 
This all contributed to my questioning over what I was seeing. I didn’t immediately think ‘oh yeah this is my ship’. I just thought ‘okay this is weird, right?’ and continued to think that for the rest of Season 6. Honestly, the idea of them as a ship didn’t really cement itself in my head until the very last episode where Jon kissed her forehead, lingered just a bit too long, stared at her lips, walked away and the immediate next shot is the reveal of R+L=J. It was like light bulbs flashing in my head, like ‘oh shit they’re cousins and cousins totally get together and is accepted as a viable marriage prospect!!’ I mean I suspected Jon wasn’t really Ned’s son, but the confirmation right after a Jonsa scene felt so so important. Not even through shipper goggles. It was what made me realise the strange tension between them wasn’t solely in my head and that this probably had a purpose for setting something up.
That’s the Jonsa thing for me. That’s literally how I began to ship them. I don’t know if this answers your question about their chemistry, but these were the moments that highlighted their chemistry to me personally. 
The reason why I’ve stayed with this ship for as long as I have, I can list you the reasons below: 
To paraphrase from a Tom Cruise film, they complete each other. I know, I know. How utterly cliched of me, but for lack of a better phrase, it’s true. I don’t even mean it in a their souls match and blahblahblah, but I mean that in personalities. Jon is the emotionally-driven, honourable, brave and intelligent military tactician, whose life has been consumed by war and physically fighting for survival. Sansa is the emotionally-guarded, brave, shrewd and pragmatic politician. Her life in contrast has been consumed by the political game and she’s had to mentally fight for survival. Jon knows the North and the dangers beyond; Sansa knows the South and the dangers there. They’re two sides of the same coin and they need each other to survive. Yes, I’d love it if it was romantically, but even taking that away, they still need each other. Together, they make a formidable team. They are Tyrion and Dani but better because there is no power imbalance. They’re equals. Yes, Jon doesn’t quite listen to Sansa sometimes, but him leaving her the North is a testament to his trust and respect for her. This is one of the reasons why I love and adore their interactions so much. You can still see how different they are as individuals but just as clearly, you can see how well they mesh together, and you sit there rooting for them both. 
They offer each other something no one else does. S7 Sansa is the most open and honest and confident I’ve ever seen her and that’s all because she trusts Jon. He might disagree, he might argue, but she feels so safe in his presence that she feels comfortable enough to finally speak her mind and demonstrate how intelligent she really is. And for the first time, she can let herself love and hope again. You see that in the soft and affectionate way she regards Jon in any matter, and that is true even in the scowls and exasperation because those emotions are still born out of her love and thus her concern for him. She wants only the best for him and for their home. Ultimately what it comes down to is Jon makes her happy, safe, hopeful and strong. His faith in her is slowly restoring her own faith in herself. That’s all I’ve ever wanted for Sansa. Even if Jonsa isn’t canon, if Sansa continues to get this, I’ll be okay. But I do feel Jonsa as a romantic pairing would be the perfect way to conclude Sansa’s story. She’s been basically sold into two loveless marriages and believes no one will ever marry her for love even though all she ever wanted was a fairy-tail romance. If her story concludes with the valiant knight (Jon) and her falling in love and marrying, it would be the perfect end, and one that isn’t too fairy-tale considering their angst and conflict over being half-siblings-turned-cousins. 
As for Jon, I personally believe Sansa’s return gave his second life meaning again. He had been so ready and determined to escape to the south and give up entirely. We don’t know whether he would’ve gone through with it and maybe he wouldn’t, but this was the lowest Jon’s ever been. He was so lost, so disillusioned, and insecure and broken, but then came Sansa and suddenly he had purpose again. Maybe it was simply family obligations, but you can’t say she didn’t inspire him to fight for his home. I don’t think Jon would’ve done it without Sansa. She also challenges him in a way no one else has since Ygritte and Jon needs that. He’s not the perfect hero; he doesn’t know everything. He’s been in the North too long to understand the political game the way Sansa does. She offers him insight into a world he had no prior knowledge in. She also offers him camaraderie, a partner with equal stakes in this war, and a friend who he can come to, someone who loves and respects him and believes in him so wholeheartedly. Yes, he has loyal knights and friends, but no one quite understands his insecurity as a Stark and a rule the way Sansa does. Their interaction in 7x01 showed us this relationship/friendship between them (the way Sansa immediately knew Jon was doubting himself and sought to reassure him earnestly even when he was being rather rude to her because the thing is she knew he needed it more than she needed his validation).
Another reason why I love this ship so much is Jon’s ferocity when it comes to Sansa. You could absolutely read this as platonic and I’m sure many do, but you can’t deny there’s definitely something visceral and primal in the way Jon strives to protect her. I’ve seen Jon kill and get aggressive, but I’ve never seen him lose control so violently than when he was beating the crap out of Ramsay. It was probably a combination of seeing Ramsay kill Rickon in front of him, but definitely also for Sansa. Then you have 7x02 where Jon chokes Littlefinger, who had been needling him and provoking him all throughout that scene, but it was the comment about loving Sansa in a sexual/romantic manner that really got him angry. The fact is there was no immediate thought to that action; it was absolutely a reactionary thing and again a primal one at that. Jon doesn’t even say anything for awhile and I think for a few seconds he really was considering killing Littlefinger. But then it’s like he comes to himself. Angry murderous kitten Jon is my favourite kind of Jon lol.
There are also a lot of Ned x Catelyn parallels that makes it hard to ignore, as well as 7x02′s parallel to Jaime x Brienne’s awkward wave goodbye. These are 2 of the most established ships in the fandom. Paralleling Jonsa with them feels intentional and important. 
But honestly, there really are so many reasons why I love this ship and why I believe in them so wholeheartedly. Maybe it is just Kit and Sophie having unbelievable chemistry, but I like to believe otherwise. I hope this sheds some light for you, Anonny.
