Important question. There are many crosscode height scholars who have come before me and done pixel by pixel analysis to determine everybodys height in feet and inches but lets not worry about that. we only need to figure out if he is short or tall. so for simplicitys sake lets base this off the portrait sprites bc that is where the height differences are most visually evident.

We dont have super concrete information about anybodys height except lea who is canonically, textually Short. Emilie looks to only be a little bit taller than lea. As for c'tron his stupid fucking hair may throw you off at first but if we measure his and emilies hairlines they seem to actually be almost exactly the same height.

Conclusion: He's Smalled

however we can take this further. to be truly fair i think we should compare him to the rest of the first scholars

measuring by the same standard, lukas and albert are significantly taller than him while hlin and buggy are juuuuuust barely taller by like a pixel or 2. nonetheless making him the shortest in this lineup.

He's canon 5'9. That is average male height IRL. It's easy to picture him taller and it was hard to picture him not taller until I had a chat with someone about body types and sports.

He is built like a soccer/futbol player.

He has low body fat, so he's cut.

He's lean muscle, so he it's not bulked.

He starts off slim, but as he has more blood, he bulks a little.

This girl is very tall, but not like giant. Some tend to make her like 6'5, but she's more like 6'.

Sun Wukong Height:

Here’s my PERSONAL take on Monkey King Height for some universes. I was going to wait for the figures for BMW to be released but they take FOREVER. And we were talking about it in my server so here goes!

****GAME SPOILERS BELOW****

BMW is decently tall - 5.8-5.11 - genuinely appears about average human height in the game.

JTTW Shorter depending 3-4ft ish give or take (I think pretty short though)

Monkey King Reborn - Shortish 5-5.5 he is almost average person height I think here as Master is fairly tall (almost as tall as Wujing) & Comparing Wujing next to a village human then Wujing next to Wukong, Wukong give or take is the same height as a human. Also, Pigsy is just shy of Masters height and Wukong is almost the same height as Pigsy but a liiiittle but shorter. (This was annoying because both Wukong and Pigsy slouch almost the entire movie and there are a LOT of angles and visual trickery with background and foreground stuff. I even tried comparing to doors but it’s inconsistent.)

Nezha Reborn - Tall 5.8-5.11

I think PERSONALLY, he’d be tall in BMW specially. I know in JTTW he’s fairly small - they saw him more as a monkey at the time right? So somewhere between an actual monkey and probably short adult human 3-4ft something? Where as modern times we see him as “anthropomorphic” but human leaning. So it makes sense for us to scale him up and change some features. He is a “demon” after all as well. *Plus I’m bias on the idea that I want him at least human sized - idc if he’s a short king or a tall king necessarily.*

ANYWAY! *see under the cut*

In BMW we see at the beginning Wukong is shorter than Erlang (not as big of a difference during cut scenes though) during the first fight of the game, but in some clips I was watching recently (modded game lol) the Broken Shell of Wukong stands at the same height ish as Erlang. So while I was already fairly certain this was a “design” choice by the devs to make it easier to see the broken shell when you fight him, this confirms it for me too. Broken shell is MUCH taller than DO during the battle.

When in cut scenes during that fight they are the same height, build, etc:

Basically what I was getting at is this, it’s clear bosses are scaled up in the game to make them easier to see as well as make them more intimidating to the player (which I think is pretty universally understood). So in a way, it’s deceptive of actual height. Untrustworthy.

So, let’s factor this instead: Wukong is an anthropomorphic monkey. Let’s say he’s between 5’ and 5’11 give or take to give him some wiggle room.

Erlang, isn’t a regular “human” by any means so him being taller than average makes sense. The other demons? Same thing. Especially creatures that are actually bigger than a monkey - like a tiger. Some other creatures we see SHOULDNT be that big though. For example insect demons. Yet they are when they should be smaller than Wukong if you’re going by “scale up based on a specific average”.

So again, deception. Height doesn’t follow natural normal rules for everyone (magic). Yes sizes can change based on certain lore & magic things and Wukong can adjust his size as to be bigger or smaller.

I don’t think Wukong is super tall or anything by any means though, that’s why I said give or take in the “head canon” estimate earlier. He’s basically a compact power house - think like how ants can lift 10-50 times their body weight. He’s agile and lithe with muscles designed to be swift and quick, he’s a monkey so he’s all energetic. Hes not meant to be a body builder (like some *Tiger 👀*……YES he is strong as fuck - this isn’t about his abilities. *Also I’m not saying any of you dudes that aren’t 6ft aren’t ‘tall’ but I’m 5.5 and “tall” to me is 6ft and up.*

Anyway, I’m getting at that Destined One is a near carbon copy of Wukong and no matter how you SEE the ending of BMW be it DO just gains Wukongs memory or Wukong is made whole again and absorbs DO and takes his memories of his short life/journey for the artifacts - the two Monkeys are the same height.

So Monkey is fairly tall also based on in game things like surroundings etc. Hes not tiny. The game devs have deceived us throughout the game regarding height in several ways since it’s not consistent.

(Funny side note, if you add an inch or two to DO and feel they are separate beings - Wukong being offended by that would kill me with laughter and be hilarious - or if they are the same and Wukong realizes it after he “awakens”)

So basically, imagine him as tall as you want 🤣 I HC as mentioned above give or take for a specific AU I make. No joke depending on what AU I have I make him as tall or short as I need. So no one is wrong, okay?

Last note: this is before figures come out (yes there was the one but idk its actual metrics and while it can help to figure out size it won’t necessarily be an end game as everything surrounding bmw and height is genuinely inconsistent as hell.

If I may ask, in your head what’s the height difference between Percy and Finnick in the story. The reason I ask is because there’s no definitive answer from what I’m seeing some people are claiming/ head cannoning that Finnick is 6’3 or even 6’5. Or what even is Percy’s height that you envisioned?

Lol this is one of those asks that you probably didn't expect me to have a lot of thoughts on, but I have a lot of thoughts on it.

Okay so, when I think about PJO character's heights, I like to think that all the demigods are like... stupidly tall. They're descended from gods who are 20 feet or something in their actual form, so it makes sense to me that their kids would all be tall. Now, this isn't canon because I'm pretty sure multiple demigod characters are described as short in the books, but I like to headcanon it anyway because it's a nice extra (and subtle) touch to show they aren't fully human. So, in my little non-canon fanfic, there aren't really any demigods shorter than like 5'8, and even that is *short* for them. Most demigods average like 5'11 to 6'0 for women and 6'2 to 6'3 for men. With that being said I don't remember Percy ever being described as particularly tall in the books? (I might be wrong on that though.) So, in my mind he's about 6'2. Maybe 6'3, which is normal for a healthy demigod his age :)

On the other hand, Hunger Games characters from the districts are, on the whole, food insecure. Katniss even talks about how her growth was stunted because of malnourishment. However, she contrasts this with the career kids who are bigger and stronger because they are better fed. Additionally, I can imagine that for a male tribute, like Finnick who presumably relied a lot on his strength to win, he must be pretty tall + strong. Plus, I think Katniss actually calls him tall in the books. (Once again, I don't have the books on me, so this is just my memory and I might be wrong). Anyway, I picture him as being around 6'1.

I definitely think Percy is the taller one, but not by a lot. And the only character I can picture being 6'5 is, like, Frank lol. (Okay, side note, I looked it up and apparently Frank is 6'5-6'6 according to the percy jackson wiki)

Hi, I was doing some research regarding the characters for an AU project and I noticed a Reddit post where it's said that there were some historical inaccuracies regarding the Cullens' canon heights. Do you think you can help elaborate on what is true or false? Maybe explain with their human backgrounds in mind like the time frames, how they grew and were brought up in their family status, etc. Maybe that affected how they grew.

I mean were there tall people in the past? Sure. But the Cullen men are tall even for the modern era. The average American male is about 5'9" (175 cm). The Cullen men are 6'2-6'5" (188-195 cm). They are STILL abnormally tall and would have been even more abnormally tall back in their human lives.

The average (English) man in Carlisle's era (based on I think soldiers of a certain war, I can't remember the details) was about 5'7" so only a little shorter than the average American today, but still considerably shorter than Carlisle himself was/is. It probably a lot to do with nutrition. People couldn't necessarily reach their full height potential if they weren't properly fed, but it could also have been genetics. I'm no expert on any of this.

There were certainly tall people in the past (I think Abe Lincoln about said to be about 6'4"), but probably fewer of them, and also statistically it seems really weird that all four Cullen men would just so happen to be over six feet tall. It makes you kind of want to handwave it like, "oh well maybe tall people are targeted by vampires because there is more blood, or they are more likely to survive being fed on because there's more blood" or something. But this height thing doesn't apply to female vampires, where several of them are very short and thus should have been less likely to survive/be targeted.

Edward, at least, was from an upper middle class or possibly even upper class family, so he was probably getting good (for the time) nutrition. We really don't know anything about Jasper's upbringing; Emmett grew up in relative poverty and hunted for food for his family and worked on the railway. Carlisle likewise it's hard to say; it's implied they weren't wealthy but there were some perks to being the children of clergy that could work in his favor.

At the end of the day I think SM just thinks tall men are attractive and so most of the male characters you're supposed to think are sexy are also Very Tall, but women can be tall (Siobhan, Zafrina) or short (Alice, Maria), and everything in between.

Any ONE of the Cullen guys being tall isn't that unlikely; what's unlikely for their time periods is that ALL of them are. I guess Carlisle and Jasper could have been 'targeted' by the vampires who turned them because they were tall (assuming vampires do have a reason to turn tall people and/or tall people are more likely to survive being fed on), but it doesn't apply to Edward and Emmett who were turned because someone else asked Carlisle to save them (Edward's mom and Rosalie). I think SM just likes tall dudes.

Control Apples: head of science and with the ability to express himself as well as a cardboard cutout. He does feel emotions, he just cannot show them. At all. Something about one of those therapy beds that was a O.O.P. (Object Of Power). He also likes burning things. Like, more than most Versions.

The tank (formerly known as Fallout apples): bright green power armor, yet blends in better than some people with stealth boys. Want to try to silence a fat man? He's your guy. Also for drugs. He makes all the drugs. ex-soldier of three wars. One for Alaska. One for Vegas. One for Boston. All three for his survival. And maybe fun on that last one.

Felix (fur-merly known as Fursona apples):, Engineer, former leader of the Regrettables (both the faction and the band). He got his time in the limelight. Now he is a actual character! And with the free trauma too. Also he made a lil ring to propose with so... don't tell Will.

Looper: robotic* mercenary for hire. Hope you got the gold! Also there are hundreds of him running around because of time loop shenanigans. Some of them even canonically fuck. Do with that information what you probably won't. (*He isn't a robot, technically. It's a techno-organic virus. He still has all the bits, just robotic. Minus nose, unless it's a snapshot of him with a snout. )

Fog killer: Also known as the apple themed streamer, the apple themed mayor, and the guy with a bigger arcade than @the-arcade-doctor, he is a totally normal and sane botanist trust me bro. Fog survivor: He is an engineer. He solves practical problems. Also works as a medic. He used to be scared of his own shadow. Now nothing phases him. Except getting stabbed because that still hurts.

Clone 007: traumatized asshole with no sense of friendly fire. He will kill anything in his way, no matter if they are helping him or not. Also he has extreme trauma, abandoned issues, and mood swings. The last one isn't related to his past, it's related to his very DNA.

Cashew: A young creature in an old automaton. He is basically a nutcracker from lethal company with some damages. And shorter. Still taller than the average dude, but small for a nutcracker.

Zweifel: What happens when you put a teen so far in the closet he tricked himself into thinking he isnt gay, into a endless colorful hell of wacky whimsical adventures? A hatred of the circus and a fear of vr.

The Angel Of hypocrisy, Nicholai: A homophobic and transphobic douchebag who should eat shit and die. Depending on which version you meet, the name makes more or less sense. Because post time skip, he gets a trans-mask boyfriend who he loves with all his heart. Even ignoring the fact his boyfriend is a serial killer. Pixel: Kleptomaniac heister with more kills from just using the environment to his advantage than with his actual weapons.

Stuffie (Formerly known as Monster Apples.): see @plushiemonstervoid I ain't repeating myself.

Satchel: living puppet made from old junk like torn towels and potato sacks. He is tall, lanky, and overall intimidating. He is also a complete pushover who literally can only attack with yarn. Normal yarn. Not exactly lethal.

Demons-Bane: a demon that kills demons. Simple as that.

Warface Apples: currently turned into an anthropomorphic raven for fuckin with... I don't remember, one of @ignisuada 's characters. Generic military dude #171. Nothing special.

Warframe apples: Sneaky, but like stealth in the Deadpool game. He has lore, I just forgot it.

Metal gear apples: god im not even going to bother trying to tie this fucker in with all the bullshit lore this game has. He is a super-soldier. He has a flamethrower. That is all thats important at this point in his non-existent lore.

Age/height/weight headcanon

The suitors 3

Ooh, good question! My headcanons fluctuate somewhat (and you'll see this especially in my art because, to be honest, I haven't figured out how to draw people the right sizes), and I'm very biased toward being a tall person in a tall family who thinks that 6'0" is a perfectly average height for a dude. But, going with what I picture (not necessarily what makes most historical sense, given that people were generally shorter back then…): 

Arthur: 26 years old, 6'3" (190 cm), heavy with a decent amount of fat and bulky muscles.

Quincey: 27 years old, 6'0" (183 cm), lean and muscular (used to be lanky, is just now growing out of it)

Jack: 29 years old, 5'9" (175 cm), skinny but scrappy 

Arthur is canonically tall, and I liked the idea of him being one of those hunky athletic dudes, while Quincey is thinner and looks tall until he stands next to Arthur. (I think in one of my fics I have them being the same height, but I honestly can't remember. Again, my headcanons are all over the place.) I see Jack as shorter but not short (though he is absolutely one of those guys who insists he's 5'11"). Since Jack is canonically 29 and refers to Arthur and Quincey as "the younger men," I decided to make them a couple years younger than him, with Arthur being the "baby" of the group (despite Quincey being the one with the baby face).

I meant to post these yesterday (between the anniversaries of ZTD's Japanese & NA/EU releases), but Eric was giving me trouble still. D-Team honestly has the least offensive designs, so I'll save them for another time. Under the cut is all my commentary on them, including more thought process stuff.

Carlos:

Square-ish design language

The concept art mentioned specifically his broad shoulders, so I tried to make them a little broader than I would on average, though I think I tend towards drawing my characters a little broad-shouldered naturally.

varsity jacket instead of button-down, emphasize "jock" attributes

Canon Carlos kind of looks like a surfer dude. I still wanted to make him look sporty, but in a different way.

I think it was a good move for the team to change this one. I like the symbol.

kept burn scarring

I feel as though the burn scarring is less likely to be from his job and more likely to be from when he saved Maria, since he wouldn't have been wearing gear at that time. But I liked the idea, so I kept it.

Junpei:

giving him the emo mullet he deserves

I think with his general self-neglect the fact that his hair is shorter in ZTD than it is in 999 is wild.

I did keep his hair being a purple-black bc I like that :)

put a design on his shirt to make it less plain, so even if you do rob him of his leather jacket he doesn't look boring

Akane:

in the actual game her dress is really close to her skin tone so it blends in. it's still close but not as bad. and it being a turtleneck mitigates those issues mostly

I also gave her the River Patented Loose Strand of Hair because I can't draw an Akane without it

both Junpei and Akane:

so I decided to put both of them on the same canvas and work on them in tandem because I like the light/dark contrast they have going on in ZTD as well as the detail that in 999 Akane is purple and Junpei is red & blue

if you look at Junpei the red & blue is still there, just darker and duller

Sean:

honestly I really like the components of his design individually but the desaturation of the colors makes him not interesting to look at past the helmet

the stripes on his shirt were originally blue I think but they're orange here so that the sneakers look less out of place

was REALLY hard to work with

like, I have four different versions of this saved, that are all the same base but slightly different

I really liked the note on his concept art where the artist wanted to make his shoulders asymmetric, and wanted to take that asymmetry idea to the next level

I made him blue to contrast with Mira's red

I also wanted to keep the "just some guy" energy, so he is still a Guy In a Shirt, but executed differently and with more color

Absolutely! Let's be real, all of the FT men are ripped on some way and Freed's no exception. And it's no wonder either because sword fighting does make you pure muscle. Man Freed's got a whole washboard stomach and his physical strength is not to be underestimated. Sword fighting does train your overall body strength, especially GRIP and also hip strength. There are multiple instance in the canon material that proves Freed's physical AND magical strength. And let it be said that muscle MASS doesn't necessarily equal strength but people just see Laxus' bulk and Freed's not as broad statue and just deprive him of physical strength/a toned body entirely because he's not broadly built but more on the slender and toned side (like most other FT men are as well). And Bixlow ain't even THAT bulky either? Man's also got a pretty slim waist but Laxus and Bix are also both taller than average. Which is another factor like..... People tend to make Freed short? Which he isn't?? I think he's supposed to be as tall as Gajeel and Jellal and Gray and Natsu are shorter for example.

@wispzoa don't mind me tagging you, I read your comments on this and thought it'd be easier to reply in this post than in the comments (because of character limitation haha). So I too am glad that we all seem to agree on the issue!!

Honestly Twitter is wild anyway but the thing you describe would upset me as well. That people take a single feature just so they can stereotypically make one party of the ship the 'feminine' one even if it bends their appearance AND their character to the point that it's not even the character anymore and make the other one the 'masculine' one is not even just a shame for the characters but also just... kinda homophobic?? You're right there are ships that work like that and that's completely fine. There are characters that present more traditionally masculine or feminine and that's amazing - but with Fraxus it's exaggerated to a point where it's just ridiculous and you're right, I never saw these roles apply to Freed and Laxus. Overall Freed's got more masculine pattern of behavior and also appearance. The long hair seems to be really key because you're right, Yuri's got those eyelashes and in some panels/shots it looks like Laxus is wearing eyeliner. We've also got Hibiki for example who's got long lashes as well.

And I think you also make them look great in your art! The last beach Fraxus you drew for example has a very good rep of their body types without depriving any of them of their toned bodies!

i gotta say, whist fraxus is easily the most popular freed ship, and one i have always loved, recently ive started preferring bixfreed, if only due to the fact that it’s one of the only gay freed ships where he’s not made into the “flamboyant one”. thats bixlow. noone is out flamboyanting bixlow, and he never loses any masculinity despite it.

ive always hated how common it is for freed to be completely mischaracterised (not even flanderised hes just straight up not the same character anymore) in most gay ships. people seem to really love making him a “damsel in distress” type, especially with fraxus, i can only assume because laxus is so stereotypically masculine.

this really seems to only be an issue with gay ships including freed (although it is especially egregious with fraxus, and a LOT of old miraxus media. no im not getting into that.)

ive never seen a ship involving freed and a woman that has this issue. he’s almost always presented as this suave intellectual, a gentleman, someone independent, but who chooses to help others. (i personally headcanon freed to be gay so its always a little annoying seeing him being characterised so much better in many of these straight ships lol)

anyway back to bixfreed

its always fun seeing freed have to act as the straightman (lol) to bixlow, and it further helps bixlow’s own character. its so good to see a man be presented as wearing typically feminine things (his skirt and nail polish), and be so willing to be silly, to goof around, to hang off ceilings, and yet not once is his masculinity compromised.

I’ve seen a great deal of fanart of freed where i genuinely thought he’d been genderbent. Freed is still a masculine character, but so many fans just see his eyelashes and hair, and throughout the series mashima just fed into this, especially in the anime, with multiple “gags” of him fawning over laxus, to the point where fans started comparing him to juvia (also someone who was flanderised to the point of being unrecognisable.)

im not even sure what my point in this rant is anymore im just so tired of this mischaracterisation. you can have a character be gay without forcing stereotypes onto them so much it becomes homophobic. im BEGGING just leave this in 2016

Primarch body/physical appearance headcanons, because I do not accept GW stupid idea that everyone has to be a big buff bastard

Lion el'Johnson: Big. Strong. The only one to keep a full beard. Green eyes and Strawberry blond hair. Pretty hairy, a TON of scar under that armor due to growing up alone. Slightly pointed teeths.

Fulgrim: Androgynous. Delicate. Tall with barely any visible muscles in spite of his strength. Hips that are just ASKING to be gripped. White hair, violet/pink-ish eyes. Their body hair is so fine it disappeared, the albino bastard. Slightly asian features.

Horus Lupercal: This man was born with an epic head of curls, holly shit. Shave them off because they annoy him. Constant beard stubble. Kind of on the heavy, fatter side of body type. Think of heavy weight olympic champion. Kinda has an eastern european face to him.

Leman Russ: has a THIN layer of fat all over his body, to hide the pure absolute complete muscle power house that he is. Long ass ash blond hair, blue eyes, fanged mouth. The inside of his hands is super rough and covered in thick callus, almost like dogs paw pad. The hairiest. Will sometime get a bit of a beard if he's lazy.

Magnus The Red: Can, and do, choose his appearance. Naturally has a more coppery skin with his bright red hair, but decided it was funnier to be red all over. His favored look is more on the lanky nerd type, but he always bulk up in presence of his humongous bros. Like to have his hair braided, and rock cornrow. His eye(s) color change constantly, and has a tendancy to glow.

Sanguinius: Sanguinius is beautiful. Sanguinius is wonderful. Sanguinius look arab, and I am not taking criticisms on this one. He also almost never disrobe in public, because his musculature to support his wings is FREAKY. Like, "what the fuck are those muscles" level of freaky. His wings actually molt through various colors, and are usually more grey or stripped, more like a bird of prey. On the shorter side, but who care, mf can FLY. Blond hair, dark brown eyes.

Konrad Curze: the second tiniest, and it's even worst since he's always hunched over and so thin. Look very sickly. Long dangly dirty black hair and HUGE eyes. If washed, feed and properly cared for, would look gorgeous. Delicate in an other worldly way. Can be described as fey, if you remember that fairy use to eat children. Filled teeth, and nails that are definitely claw. Has horrible scars on his body.

Vulkan: Biggest boi. So huge. Much awe. Very dark skin, but like... Not in a "literally chunked in black paint" way. Look kind of centrafrican, think Rwanda and the like. Nothing but muscles, not a once of fat on that body. Get sometime peach fuzz on his head, and shave it due to fire hazard. Best ass in the entire Imperium. Glowing red eyes, but yall know that.

Rogal Dorn: also an albino! Blue eyes to go with the white hair and skin. Very, very muscular and strong, more of a military man build tho. Keep his hair perfectly trimmed, otherwise it irk him to no end. Always perfectly prime and proper physically. On the taller side of the family.

Roboute Guilliman: Blond lock, blue eyes, mister perfect boyscout. The funny thing is, you can keep track of his mental state by how he look! The more stressed he is, the more rumply he will be. Naturally very well build, full grec god, because some people just get all the good things. Second best ass is the Imperium.

Ferrus Manus: Kinda have a native american look to his face. Darker skin than in canon, because again, canon is weak. Black hair, dark eyes. Nothing but pure muscles, in competitions with Vulkan on who is the most ripped dude around.

Perturabo: Average size in height, but my *god* is he buff. Huge. Body builder level of bullshit. Had soft brown hair that he shave, along with his beard. Would be naturally pretty hairy but he's strangely against it. Brilliant blue eyes. Very soft hand, to everyone surprise.

Corvus Corax: biologically Konrad identical twin, and yet... Also, like always with me, trans woman. Average build and size, lean muscles. Has fluffy, poofy black hair, almost feather like up to her shoulder. Has huge black eyes and would look beautiful, but she's kind of uncomfortable with that fact.

Jaghatai Khan: Mongolian. Very, VERY proud of his facial hair. Longuest hair of any primarch, Magnus doesn't count, he cheat. On the fatter side, but still very damn strong. Has thigh that could kill someone. Dark brown eyes, and a pretty round face. Very nice smile.

Lorgar Aurelian: Don't you dare draw that man white. Really dark african arab look, shave his head for the cool tattoos. Golden eyes, on the small side. Muscular, especially in the arms. Has very nice hands, made for writing. Very little body fat, and has a hard, tanned skin.

Mortarion: The most alien looking one in the family. Completely hairless, covered at around 80% in white and pink scar tissues. His eyes are brown with a white film over them, almost like cataract. It was actually a protection mechanism to help them not burn out in the toxic atmosphere. Also, personal headcanon: he's intersex, of the ovotestis variety. It fuck with his hormones a lot. He's very tall and gangly, almost as thin as Konrad. Would never be seen naked.

Angron: Pretty dark skin, but his feature are kinda undefined. Had bright red hair before the nails. Has electric blue eyes. Average leaning on short, but SO fucking stacked, holly shit. Give Perturabo and Leman a run for their money. Covered in painful, ugly scars.

Alpharius/Omegon: the Average Man. The true smallest, even if Konrad look smaller. Brown hair if they let it grow, but shave it. Brown eyes. Features look like they could have been a computer average. Nothing distinctive anywhere on their body.

Chapter 9: Packing Up

Summary: “Your theory about possibly being matched with aliens? Well, he isn’t exactly an alien, he is a part of the First Order. When they found out who I was matched to I was immediately escorted here.”

You were alone for a moment, you swore you could almost hear Kylo talking to the general on the other side of the door. He sounded harsh. You hear his footsteps walk further down the hall.

The door opens and the general walks in with the tree junior officers trailing him. He stepped back and let the junior officers quickly clean up your and Kylo’s lunch. “The Supreme Leader has made me in charge of your safety. He also said I am to take you where ever you would like to go.”

You nodded. Just now you realized you never messaged Hayden or Carter that you had been escorted, in fact, you had yet to check your phone.

You pulled it out of your back pocket and saw that you had 30 messages from Carter and Hayden and 15 missed calls. They were all asking where you were, if something happened, if you were all right and if you were being interrogated.

You decided to call Carter. “Excuse me, General, I need to make a phone call.”

He nodded and stepped out of the room leaving you alone. You dialed Carter’s phone number, it rang twice before they picked up.

“Oh my god Y/N! Are you all alright? We have been trying to get a hold of you for hours now,” their voice was laced heavily with concern.

“I know. I’m alright, everything is fine. Actually, it’s better than fine, but I don’t know if this is how I want to explain it. I’m safe, I’m in Washington D.C.”

“Wait I’ll put you on speaker. You will explain everything,” you heard Carter switch the phone to speaker. And heard Hayden clear his throat.

“Hayden, you were right,” you said with a light chuckle.

“Sweet! Wait right about what,” he asked not remembering.

“Your theory about possibly being matched with aliens? Well, he isn’t exactly an alien, he is a part of the First Order. When they found out who I was matched to I was immediately escorted here,” you paused second guessing if you should reveal who Kylo is. “He is a high ranking officer, so it looks like I’ll be joining them.”

“Wow, Y/N we are so happy for you. I’m guessing you’ll probably leave when they do. Are you coming home tonight?” Asked Carter.

“He said I’ll be joining him on the ship tonight and that I will be able to come back down tomorrow,” You glanced at your watch. 3:30 PM, the suttle ride itself only took an hour and a half to get you from Toronto to D.C. You should have enough time to go back grab some things and be back in time for the nightly public First Order address. “I know you guys have more questions but I have to go.”

“Bye, be safe my dude,” said Hayden.

“You know we love you and want you to be happy, just call us when you can,” said Carter.

“I know and I love you guys too,” and with that, you said your goodbyes and you ended the call.

Unsure of what to do you walked over to the door opened it and stuck your head out. You could see the general down the hallway talking to some other First Order officers and people whom you assumed to be White House staff. You called to him, “General?”

He turned and started walking towards you. You now exited the room. “Yes,” he asked.

“Your orders were to take me anywhere that I would like to go, correct,” you asked.

“Correct, I am assuming you have made a choice,” he responded.

“I was wondering if I could take a shuttle back to Toronto to gather some of my things? I’m hoping to return before the nightly public address.”

“That can be arranged,” with that he looked over his shoulder to one of the junior officers who left immediately to make the arrangement. “Of course because I have been tasked personally with your safety I will have to escort you.” And with that, the junior was back and informed the general that there was a shuttle ready. He nodded and they excused themselves. He gestured for you to once again follow him and you were off to the shuttle.

You exited the White House and were once again aboard the shuttle, “This is a Xi-class light shuttle. It is mostly used for ferrying on planet surfaces and transporting freight. Not, that I expect that you will remember this right now, but if you are to be Supreme Leader’s consort then you will be expected to know these things.”

You looked at the general slightly shocked. This wasn’t something you had thought deeply about. You were now about to literally give up your whole, albeit boring, life for a man who was in charge of a military regime. You didn’t want to be in the spotlight. You just wanted to be loved and to love.

Both of you buckled in facing each other, “Would you like me to prepare some education videos for you? You have much more to learn than the average First Order planet citizen,” he said while working on a datapad.

You just nodded your head and he handed one to you, “This video is outdated but contains lots of good information and background knowledge for you,” responded the general.

He pulled up a video titled “First Order” by The Templin Institute. This one was much shorter and was just under ten minutes. This video gave you an idea as to who the man Kylo killed in order to receive the Supreme Leader position. It also gave you more information as to how the First Order came to be. When you glanced up after finishing the video the general used his datapad to send you another.

This time it was a speech given by the general himself from Starkiller base, “The First Order: Last day fo the Republic.” The video was intimidatingly impressive, it was similar to the speech he gave yesterday, but this time it caused the destruction of an entire star system, the New Republic’s capital.

“What did you think,” he asks as you can see the smug look on his face.

“It was intimidatingly impressive. An entire system gone in a matter of minutes.”

He was pleased with your answer as he sent you a news release from the First Order. “The Voice of the First Order: Issue 23.” Ironically the first one being about propaganda, avoiding Resistance and the New Republic propaganda and where a First Order citizen my uncover the truth.

Lastly, he sent you a bunch of articles talking about the different transport ships that were standard issue within the First Order.

The pilot spoke to the general informing him of the arrival back at the registration station. You handed the general back the data pad. You both unbuckled and stood to exit the shuttle.

“General, if you don’t mind I need to take my car back to my apartment to get my things,” you said to him.

“Yes, one of the ancient wheeled vehicles. I suppose we will have to return it. How many passengers can you fit,” he asked almost disgusted by the idea of having to ride in a car.

“Not including the driver I can technically seat 4, but only three comfortably as it is a sedan,” you replied.

“This will probably be the only time you will be allowed to drive one of those death machines again, but we will take three troopers with us for protection,” he said. And the thought of never driving again made you sad and curious as to see what freedoms you would be allowed. The general ordered three troopers to escort you two your car. “We will have the shuttle pick us up from your apartment to make things easier upon departure.”

With that, you got into your car. The general still seemed to be disgusted with it, even though it was clean. The three troopers struggled to sit in the back as they were too large for the seat. Once everyone was settled and buckled you were on your way to your apartment. It was not a long drive and for once all of the lights were green when you got to them.

Parking in your ramp you all got out of your car and approached your building's elevator. The troopers were making sweeps of the area and the general followed confidently behind them and all of them behind you. The elevator ride is awkward, even more so than the car ride. You reach your floor and you unlock your do, but be for you enter one of the stormtroopers moves you out of the way. They enter and sweep your tiny apartment.

The general just hummed in response. You went to your closet and gathered your duffle bag and your backpack. You began packing all of your clothes and your toiletries knowing this could be one of the last times you would be back at your apartment. Packing didn’t take very long. You grabbed your work tote and filled it with your laptop, planner, notebooks, and chargers. You also grabbed your favorite coffee to-go cup and water bottle. It only took about 15 minutes to pack everything. “Is there anything I can get you? I have water, tea, coffee, and various fruit and snacks.”

The general shook his head in response and the troopers gave no sign of acknowledgment. And with that, your life was packed and ready to be moved again.

“This is everything I need, we should be able to go now.”

The general nodded to the troopers and you made your way down to the main entrance of your apartment building. Once again you boarded the shuttle.

I was just thinking about the height of some of the characters (Tristan's patrol in this case) and I just remembered that canonically Anders is tall and idk how to feel about that. So what are your height hcs for the patrol?

Tris- He’s probably around 6′0″ (182.88 cm) to like 5′10″ (177.8 cm) 6′0″ is like average for dudes so he’s probably around that

Nyka- She’s around 5′4″ (162.56 cm) maybe 5′6″ (167.64) 5′4″ is like she’s still able to do stuff, but she’s also on the shorter side

Lysandro- I headcanon him to be about Nyka’s height, maybe taller so like 5′5″ (165.1 cm)

Anders- 5′0″ (152.4 cm) no I will not be taking constructive criticism at this time

Latham- Probably about like 6′0″ (182.88 cm) I don’t really have an opinion on his height, other than he’s taller than Anders. 

Ronyn- 5′8″ (172.72 cm) He seems like shorter and stocky to me tbh

Elliot- He seems tall to me probs about 6′0″ (182.88 cm) or like 6′1″ (185.42 cm)

Sparrow- Short. She’s so short. 4′9″ (144.78)

Val- eh probably not much taller than Nyka, so like 5′7″ (170.18 cm) to like 5′8″ (172.72 cm)

Cranberry

The ideal Holmes is tall and dark with sharp edges and an intelligent look to him, but also posh and with a sense that you could fold him into origami if you really tried. Dresses well, but wouldn’t look out of place sprawled dramatically over a couch in a dressing gown with a pipe and surrounded by drug paraphernalia. Once made a pillow fort and sat in it to think. Caught somewhere between handsome, pretty, and weird looking. Emphasis can be on any of the three. CANNOT have facial hair.

Holmes Adaptations

S-Tier

Miss Sherlock (Yuko Takeuchi) - 95%

You’ll notice, of course, that nowhere in the earlier description did I say Holmes needed to be white, a man, or even human. None of those qualifiers or the lack-thereof prevent someone from looking the part -- it simply becomes necessary to compare them to the characters around them. And when I picture a female Sherlock Holmes, Yuko Takeuchi embodies the exact image in my mind. Her sharp edges, piercing eyes, and impeccable fashion, along with the powerful weird energy she brings to the role, fit Sherlock perfectly. She does look more than a bit like she could kick my ass, but more in the manner she dominates the room, which is perfect for the character.

Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) - 85%

I haven’t watched this adaptation, though I’ve been meaning to get around to it. So this ranking is based solely on screenshots and promotional images. And honestly, as ugly as i find this guy, he totally nails it. He even kind of looks like the illustrations in the stories. I won’t give him a perfect score because his hair could be darker and his face is a little small, and there’s just barely something missing. But as far as “canon” Holmes adaptations go, he’s the cream of the crop.

A-Tier

Sherlock: The Abominable Bride (Benedict Cumberbatch) - 80%

Definitely the more accurate of the two Cumberbatch Holmes designs, the sleek fashion and slicked back hair complement Cumberbatch’s angular build and “somewhere between pretty and just weird” face. He’s tall, dark, and posh. If there’s anything holding him back it’s simply that even dressed up properly, there’s something still a bit modern looking about him.

Fate/Grand Order - 78%

Given that his design and presentation are a direct reference to both Brett and Cumberbatch’s portrayals, it’s a given he’d place so highly. It’s really hard to nail down a 2D Holmes, especially in the anime style this game employs, since it has a tendency to prettify characters by default. True to form, FGO Holmes is far neater and more precise than I’d like. But he’s by no means a bad design, and depending on the image he can really hit the spot for me; he’s definitely a chart topper in the realm of 2D Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes: The Furtive Festivity (Gregory Johnstone) - 75%

There aren’t many Holmes that we only get to see as an old man, in no small part due to the ACD estate’s notoriously malicious copyright practices. Johnstone ranks so highly not due necessarily to the details of his look, but the overall feel he embodies. This Holmes is soft, affectionate, more than a little floppy. His hair and costume portray a man well grown into his eccentric life, and his face is sharp and mature enough to suggest the brains underneath; even if that’s more wisdom than intelligence in this particular story. This is a Holmes designed by someone who really loves Sherlock Holmes, and it definitely shows.

BBC Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) - 75%

Cumberbatch’s features still naturally suit Holmes well, and he’s tall and striking enough to cover the rest. But this isn’t a rating of his acting performance aside from the visuals it supplies; it’s hard to modernize Holmes, especially since it makes perfect sense for Holmes to gel well with the changing times; he was always a man ahead of his era. BBC Holmes’s trademark trenchcoat and curly locks aren’t traditional Holmes, but they suit him well enough.

Yuukoku no Moriarty - 73%

The long hair is an unorthodox take, but I'm certainly not complaining. YnM's Holmes definitely nails the youthful scientific exuberance of an early Holmes. It's clear they were going for a sort of BBC/ACD mix, but with their own spin. Pretty -- he is an anime boy, after all -- but all sharp edges and full of energy. Decent, way better than most anime Holmes designs manage.

B-Tier

Basil of Baker Street [The Great Mouse Detective] - 70%

Comparing the character to those around them is especially important when it comes to non-human characters, who naturally don’t have the same features. Putting Basil next to Dawson makes this abundantly clear, as they make a perfect portrait of Holmes and Watson. For a mouse, he’s thin, angular, even a little ratlike; all decisions that suit Holmes well. I have some complaints about his ensemble, though; while the dressing gown suits him well, his normal brown coat and hat don’t work so well with his fur; the monochrome look makes him come off a bit scruffy and unrefined.

A Study in Black - 68%

Rules are made to be broken, they say; here’s a Holmes with well maintained facial hair and who’s shorter than Watson, and yet I can without question say they were the right decisions. This Holmes takes a very different design approach than any other on this list, even the other modern takes, but he embodies the spirit of Holmes much more than if he’d tried to match every detail. Holmes is still gaunt and striking, eccentric and fashionable. He looks absolutely great.

The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (Robert Stephens) - 62%

Stephens in this role is, I have to say, far too soft. But he’s playing a different sort of Holmes, and I can’t resist keeping him here. There are some parts of the look he has down; he certainly looks high class, and the softer elements of Holmes’ character look good on him. Holmes’ traditional costume, the hat and coat, look out of place on him. But that suits the message of the film, and may very well have been intentional.

C-Tier

Dai Gyakuten Saiban - 58%

Not the only blond Holmes on this list, but it doesn’t suit him as poorly. From a character design standpoint, it looks very good. As a Holmes, it’s unorthodox. He’s not gonna be a chart topper with it, but I wouldn’t rule it out. This Holmes’ real problem isn’t his coloration, merely that he’s much too conventionally attractive. His jaw is a bit too wide, curls a bit too lovely, the peek of lavender under his coat a bit too rich, and I can’t look at him for too long without blushing. Do some cocaine and get back to me.

Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) - 55%

Now, this one might be controversial. I don’t think Rathbone Holmes looks very good. I can’t put my finger on why; his head is the right shape, his nose very sharp, though his face looks very smooth and he seems overall vaguely packed in. Like he was plucked out of the sky just before walking on set. The shapes are all right, it just seems off to me. I guess what I’m getting is that his look is too obviously produced. He looks too much like an actor portraying Holmes, rather than Holmes. But I know he’s gonna be the guy a lot of people swear by, so I won’t defend this placement too hard.

Sherlock Hound - 45%

Really, what is up with the monochrome design on some of these cartoons. Sherlock Hound has the darker hat to make up for it, though, so it’s a little better. Applying the same rubric as Basil to him... doesn’t get the same results. As far as I can tell, this just looks like a normal dog. And a scruffy light-furred one, at that. There’s a contrast between him and Watson, sure, but it could’ve been pushed further. At the end of the day this is an average guy dressed as Sherlock.

D-Tier

Herlock Sholmes [Code: Realize] - 40%

This is a very pretty anime boy. I’d pick him first in whatever dating sim this is. ...Wait, this is supposed to be Holmes? How can you tell? Look, I know it’s hard to make an anime boy Holmes. Holmes’ key design elements aren’t his costume or his hair, they’re the things that make him unpolished. And anime dating sim boys don’t like to be unpolished. But really, this is just a steampunk boy who likes tea. Nothing here reads as Holmes to me.

Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) - 35%

Now, I love this movie. RDJ got me back into Sherlock Holmes when I was younger. And as this character, he has a very specific and well designed look. ...Does that look gel with canon Holmes? I don’t think so. He’s rough, he’s scruffy, he’s short and wide and strong-jawed, and he refuses to go for a clean shave. I like him a lot, but he’s not very Holmesian. He does, however, nail the eccentricity and his costume design works for him well. I do like a messy Holmes. So I won’t go any lower than this.

F-Tier

Basil [Blush Blush] - 28%

So, he’s got the outfit. There’s that. But otherwise... This is just some soft ugly anime boy cosplaying Sherlock Holmes. He doesn’t have a single trait that works in his favor. On top of that, he’s got the same problem the other Basil on this list had -- the all monochrome light brown just looks weird, and not Holmesian at all. And this boy doesn’t have the excuse of literally being a mouse. This is just an ugly design.

Elementary (Jonny Lee Miller) - 25%

Now, I've only watched a few scattered episodes of Elementary. Partially because I'm morally opposed to shows that only gender-flip half of the duo, partially because I’m absolutely outraged by the travesty they made Moriarty. But this isn’t a bad character, per-se.

But, like, this is just some dude. This isn't Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes [Clue] - 23%

I love Clue so much. That probably doesn’t surprise anyone. I have the season pass in this game, which automatically gives me every DLC character they add for free. So I was super excited to hear there was gonna be a Sherlock crossover. ...But this is just ugly. Another light haired square-jawed monochrome asshole pretending to be my favorite character. There’s nothing Holmes about this. (The rest of the designs in the pack are no better, but this isn’t about them.)

Skylar Holmes [Blossom Detective Holmes] - 20%

Now, Blossom Detective is a show that I famously disliked so much I immediately sat down and screenwrote my own Holmes cartoon on the spot. And Skylar certainly feels like she should be in the “part 2″ of this list, but a Holmes she is.

She's cute and she accessorizes well, but she's just not Sherlock Holmes by any stretch.

Sherlock Shellingford [Milky Holmes] - 10%

Now, look how cute she is! Sherlock Shellingford, present and accounted for. She’s got TWO Sherlock names so you know she’s the real deal. Now, this is just an objectively good design. She's exactly what she needs to be to serve the role she plays!

And that isn't Sherlock Holmes. Sorry.

Holmes & Watson (Will Ferrell) - 0%

Holmes Archetypes

Not all Holmes’ are meant to be the Canonical Sherlock Holmes, of course; some are just neat references, or characters who naturally fit into his role whether the author intended it or not. Let’s address them here, and remember that not looking the part doesn’t really reflect negatively on these ones as they’re stand-alone.

S-Tier

Dylan Reinhart [Instinct] (Alan Cumming) - 90%

Dylan is so point for point Sherlock Holmes that it’s hard to call him an archetype and not a straight adaptation, or possibly a rip-off if I’m being harsh. But I’m not supposed to be rating him by portrayal, just looks - and he’s really good. He’s the exact right blend of weird looking, though not as angular as he should be. His sharp eyebrows and nose and high hairline work fantastic, and he wears a suit very well. He’s a perfect little bundle of posh and nerves, and though he’s not perfect the fact that this isn’t actually supposed to be canon Sherlock Holmes makes this placement very unsurprising. He wouldn’t look out of place on the other list.

Hubert von Vestra [Fire Emblem: Three Houses] - 85%

Oh? What’s that? You don’t think Hubert von Vestra is a Sherlock Holmes archetype? Okay, then explain to me why he uses the word “sentiment” exactly twice in his supports. Atheists 1, Church of Seiros 0. Anyway. Let’s start with the obvious. Hubert looks like Benedict Cumberbatch. But, he looks like a vampire Benedict Cumberbatch who did a lot more cocaine. And if you don’t think Sherlock Holmes should look like a vampire, youre lying.

A-Tier

B-Tier

Heinwald [Dragalia Lost] - 67%

I would never look at this design and think "well, that's Sherlock Holmes". Heinwald looks more like a zombie or the bride of Frankenstein, very Halloween. His look being so specific does come at the expense of his Holmesness, but he's still got more than a few traits down and he’s an absolute treat.

L Lawliet [Death Note] - 65%

This is a very, very weird looking man. Key points: dark hair and eyes. gaunt, sharp, and mostly angular (though with a softer face). Extremely foldable. This man could 100% pass for Holmes, if someone else was dressing him. Put him in a suit, comb his hair? Yeah. It’d really work. But until then, he’s just most of the way there.

Kyoko Kirigiri [Danganronpa] - 63%

Kirigiri really gets jilted here, because she could be much higher. Unfortunately, she has to be part of a series that with only a few exceptions just reuses the same face and body for most of its female characters. Kirigiri definitely has the sharp and focused feel she needs to pass for Holmes, and she dresses well. The white hair is the opposite of the dark he usually touts, but it’s striking. Unfortunately, put her next to any other character in her series, and she blends back in.

Miles Edgeworth [Ace Attorney] - 60%

Feels a little weird to put Edgeworth on here when the actual Sherlock Holmes is in his game, but he fits the character much better if not the narrative role. So let’s go over the looks. His jaw is a bit wide, but he’s very pointy, and I certainly have never gotten the impression he’s a physically strong man. He’s very fashionable, and with his big cravat and sharp hair he makes a cutting silhouette. I’d say he needs a bit more to really nail the look, though.

C-Tier

Will Graham [Hannibal] (Hugh Dancy) - 45%

Despite being a noted Hannibal Lecter fan and possible homosexual, I still haven’t watched Hannibal. I’m taking people at their word that Will is a Sherlock; I definitely would have assumed otherwise looking at him. He reminds me deeply of BBC’s John Watson, and it’s hard to see anything else. But I don’t hate his look; he reads as clever, he looks good in darks, and I wouldn’t complain to see him cast as Holmes. He’s better than some of the lower-tiered canon Holmes actors, anyway.

Ranpo Edogawa [Bungo Stray Dogs] - 40%

This is another submission, and I don’t know who this boy is. I really doubt he’s actually a Holmes, given that he’s named after a real non-Doyle writer, but I was begged to include him. Let’s go. I really like his outfit. He’s got an aesthetic I like. Is it Holmes’? No. This kid looks like he’d fit way better as a Baker Street Irregular; maybe he should audition.

D-Tier

Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) - 35%

Take everything I said for Robert Downey Jr, and just mess up his hair a bit more. House is scruffy, poorly put together, and not wearing anything that costs over $100. As a Holmes, he’d work as one of his disguises; I wouldn’t be super surprised if this guy suddenly cleaned up and looked the part -- but it would take a lot of cleaning. I love his look, though -- again, he isn’t trying to be canon. House is an explicit Holmes parallel, but he’s still his own character.

F-Tier

Walnut Cookie [Cookie Run] - 20%

Given how much “Holmes costume” and “Detective costume” are conflated, it’s possible this gingerbread baby isn’t even supposed to be a Holmes reference, but I’ll take her. She’s an excellent design - but a standalone one. Shes too soft, warm, and curly looking to pull off canon Holmes.
