every few months i get really into pokemon and start thinking about red and blue pokemon again and then i get the sudden urge to binge reread peaks and valleys by clefairytea its so real its happening again this is me rn

This report has been supplemented with statistics, observations, and information from one Professor Alexander DuPin.

‘Twinkle’ has changed in form. Instead of the ‘Eevee’ I wished for (Exact verbiage, ‘I wish there was an Eevee here.’) the subject is now an exact, perfect copy of my Partner Pokémon, Umber.

Some information about Umber. As you may be able to deduce, he is an Umbreon. He is old, nearly as old as I am, and no longer fit to battle in his advanced age. He has grey furs around his muzzle. His frontal ring is misplaced, and circles his left eye as opposed to sitting neatly on his forehead. He loves chin scratches, and his favorite food is imported Salmini bites from Altera.

Prior to the recent ‘incident’ involving the disruption of the ‘Wishmade Sky,’ which made the formerly begin phenomenon a threat, the Eevee ‘Twinkle’ was its own entity.

Twinkle was a young Eevee of approximately 2 years old. He was able to battle perfectly fine, and even seemed enthusiastic about it. His markings were average, with no sign of any kind of distinction from the average specimen. He pointedly did not enjoy being touched on the chin, and seemed to enjoy Pecha berries more than anything else.

On the morning of June 10th, 2025, it became apparent to me that ‘Twinkle’ no longer existed.

The Eevee was theoretically, still in its provided habitat. However, when approached, it became apparent that ‘Twinkle’ had been replaced with a perfect copy of my Umbreon. Stranger still, I seemed to completely believe this was Umber. I even freed him from his habitat. This, of course, became an issue when I returned to the main body of the lab, and saw the real Umber sitting in his bed.

Curiouser still, I could still, for some reason, not tell which Umber was the real one. This is all despite it being abundantly clear in hindsight.

This launched me into a bit of a panic, I’m embarrassed to say. The idea of losing Umber, and the guilt of somehow mixing him up with an imitation was horrific. Even thinking back on it now is panic inducing.

I gathered myself best I could, and contacted a colleague to come and help me by preforming non-invasive tests to find out which Pokémon was the real Umber. When Professor LePin arrived, however, he could immediately tell which Umber was the imposter. Apparently to everyone but myself, ‘Twinkle’ still has a characteristic shine to its pelt.

Tests were preformed just to be sure, however, every test done only proved that the two Umbreon were completely identical in every way. I had no choice but to take Professor LePin’s word, and allow him to continue with the testing of ‘Twinkle.’

I could not bring myself to do invasive testing on a creature with the face and nature of my partner Pokémon.

it took me a while but I got an idea I wanna know about your favorite pokemon :-) has it always been the same? did it change over time? why do you like it? what's the story behind it?

well right now my #1 favorite pokemon is sprigatito and the reasons for that are probably pretty obvious LOL, gen 9 has had a massive impact on me, i love cats, and also sprigatito is like the face of pokemon horizons and belongs to liko who is also really important to me... brings me comfort to see her

obviously i've been into pokemon for 2 decades so that hasn't always been the case though. as a young kid my favorite pokemon was. well. it was pikachu. pretty simple. we're talking like age 4-7 or so. i think after playing sinnoh my favorite pokemon became eevee, or whatever eeveelution i was obsessed with at the time. again pretty straightforward. this lasted more or less into adulthood (i've been one of those people obsessed with the eeveelutions for forever) when i started playing pokemon games more seriously again and started interacting with the pokemon community... playing so much damn pokemon and using so many pokemon naturally led to new favorites and also the memories i have with real people naturally get connected to pokemon and so that influences my opinions too...

before sprigatito my favorite pokemon was zigzagoon for a good while but it's kind of hard to articulate why. i don't have any bombastic or special memories with zigzagoon. i really love its cute and spiky design but that's not enough to warrant it being my favorite even though loving the design obviously helps. but i think similar to how sprigatito is like the face of paldea to me, and all of my memories with gen 9 and the pokemon community lately, zigzagoon was the face of the GBA games when i was getting into ribbon mastering for the first time and interacting with that community, the face of that era of retro pokemon to me... a small unassuming mammal everywhere in those games. so i guess really the symbolism torch was just passed from one pokemon to another

all this being said my #1 favorite pokemon i don't feel is a wide enough net and my choice between like, #1 and #2 are somewhat arbitrary or chosen on purpose. i have a LOT of favorite pokemon and a lot of guys i am passionate about. it's just hard not to be when you interact w pokemon this damn much. like ie. lumineon is one of my favorites because as a kid, the diamond/pearl dex is the only one i ever fully completed until much later in my life, and somehow lumineon was the last pokemon i hadn't obtained, so it was the last one i had to evolve, and i still remember the pride that washed over me evolving it and then opening my pokedex and seeing it done... then PBR taught me that thunder always hits in rain, which is the first unique battle strategy i ever really learned as a kid, and i experimented with it with a rain dance lumineon, the same one i evolved for the dex, and a thunder luxray in PBR. i have so many stories like that it's ridiculous

Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #30

So… remember the music box that I said I was working on in my 8th letter to you? I finally finished it today. I'm not very good at turning the music box crank, but I still think it turned out well. Check it out:

Though this one is much more simple than the ones I've made previously, this one took a lot more time than I expected; this is probably due to all of the weird stresses and shifts in schedules that come about as a result of the holidays. I haven't been able to go to Eggcellent as often as I would have liked.

As I said previously, this music box is not for you. It's for a person in my social circle. I said before that I'd explain. I guess now is the time.

There is a place that I go to, when I have the time and the energy. I love it there. The people there are all very kind. They sing a lot of pretty songs as a gentleman plays piano - I know one of the songs, so I sing along a little to that one, even though raising my voice in public scares me a lot. The leader of the group is especially vibrant, kind, and wonderful; there is much that I can learn from him about how to be, and how to maintain my empathy even when I am troubled, so I pay careful attention to the way he speaks to other people and the words he chooses so that way I can continue to do my best to make sure the people around me feel safe and understood. I'll speak more about this person at some point in the future; I have many good things to say about him, but for now, it is outside of the scope of this letter.

This may seem irrelevant, but bear with me: I run around the world with an Eevee hat on my head all the time. Mewtwo will always be my favorite, but they do not make Mewtwo hats (he is not very popular, and this is sad), and I adore Eevee for the fact that it looks unremarkable, but it's secretly prismatic - given the right influences, it can become anything! Behold:

The gentleman on the piano, noticing my hat, began to play the theme for Pallet Town. When he did this, I felt seen, and from that, I felt joy and a sense of belonging. To feel seen and to feel as though I belong anywhere is a very rare thing for me. Rare enough that I was inspired to create a music box for the song that he played. I intend to give the music box to him next time I see him. I hope he'll like it. I hope that from it, he will understand that his existence, his words, and his actions are all things that matter. I hope he will understand the vast power he and all other humans wield.

Everyone is like Eevee in that we might seem unremarkable at first glance, but on the inside we are prismatic and we can become anything and everything that we wish, if we're willing to work at it, ask for help, and expose ourselves to the right influences while minimizing our exposure to toxicity and other things that do not serve us.

There's a song about that, actually. I've been meaning to show it to you for a while. I guess now is as good a time as any to send it along:

May the way I use mine reach you somehow, and inspire you to use yours for kind, wholesome, gentle, and good things. Hoenn was, at one point in time, my least favorite region. This is an asinine statement, but listen. They didn't have Eevee. Eevee was my favorite! I did Crystal with an entire Eeveelution team! How am I supposed to play this game without Eevee? This is a concept that will come up twice more in the series, but to simplify this moment: Hoenn is now arguably my favorite. I adore these games.

I played Emerald, the superior game. My team was Blaziken (Lonely), Delcatty (Hasty), Tropius (Bold), Banette (Naive), Walrein (Naughty), and Mawile (Jolly). The game was pretty much a straight shot, with only one stop to train up to Walrein's evolution before Tate and Liza.

Hoenn is a region based on exploration more than any other. One of the interesting things that stands out about Hoenn is the pathing of the game. You start out going up to Rustboro, then double back to take a boat to Dewford and then around to Slateport, continue north around Fallarbor then loop back to the gondola that takes you up to Lavaridge, then go all the way back to face your dad, then you open up all the Surf routes you took on the boat and the east toward Winona, then to Tate and Liza, and then all the surf routes that loop to Slateport again. The game feels very interconnected, and the constant looping back somehow doesn't feel too irritating. You'd expect this to be tedious, retracing your steps so often, but it's always with something new you can do when you come back. Alongside this are a ton of optional areas, like the Sunken Ship, Shoal Cave, all the Trick Master trials, the routes between Slateport and Pacifidlog including the nonsense Regi puzzles, etc. There is a metric ton to do in this game.

Part of what's exciting about Hoenn is that, in my personal opinion, this is the best new roster of Pokemon ever made. Hoenn has some of the strongest new designs, and almost nothing I could criticize. With the size of this dex, it creates a situation that is perfect for replays, picking between all-time favorites like Mawile, or options that I like but never used before like Tropius and Walrein. It's a delightful region.

The biggest gameplay transition is also one that you could completely ignore: the change from Stat Experience to EVs. I won't bother getting into specifics, if you know you know, but these changes...fundamentally alter nothing. Your Pokemon are unlikely to hit caps, and the main way you do is through medicine. In essence, your stats aren't any higher at the end of the game between these two systems. I will note that EVs tend to go faster than stat experience does, at the cost of not improving every stat simultaneously.

A criticism I have historically levied against EVs is that they can be, at times, wasteful. This is, from this replay, a superficial complaint. The idea is that, if you're training Kadabra in the Fighting Dojo in Gen 1, you still gain the stat experience of their defenses and speed, while in Gen 3 using Ralts against Brawly puts on a lot of Atk EVs that Ralts will never use. While this is technically true, it is functionally without meaning. By gameplay, you will never feel this substantial difference. It's a minor optimization you can make at best, to consider using, say, Taillow instead, but it's not necessary. If anything, EVs in a generation before the physical/special split are best when they distribute evenly. Ralts and Kadabra are extreme examples, but most Pokemon will utilize both offensive stats, so no EV truly goes to waste here.

But this raised an interesting question for me. If the system doesn't feel different...why change it? And I think I know the answer now.

Gen 3 introduced Double Battles, and Emerald in particular offers a ton of situations where you can get into Doubles. In the old stat experience model, stat EXP was split between combatants, such that each participant received half. In essence, in a Double format, Stat EXP would train each Pokemon half as quickly. EVs, however, cannot be split. All participants share the EVs, so a Double battle is training two at the same time for the same full amount. I suspect that EVs were adopted due to the anticipated shift to Doubles formats. Which. Did not catch on. As it turned out. Best laid plans?

The last big takeaway I had was that Hoenn is where difficulty first appeared in the series. Not like in a big way, but Gen 1 is piss easy, and so is Gen 2 barring Red, and even Red can be easily counterpicked. Gen 3 has a lot of tools it throws at you that test your problem solving, or at least push you to grind.

Consider Roxanne. In Gen 1, Brock is easily beaten regardless of starter, because Geodude and Onix have terrible Sp Def and no Rock or Ground moves. There isn't really a trial, so much as maybe a showing for Charmander that not very effective attacks may still be better. Roxanne, however, goes for the throat. Nosepass is obscenely bulky for this time in the game, and she backs that up with two Potions. She can stop you from switching, lowers your speed with Rock Tomb to spin turn order to her favor, and is generally a menace. I love her for that.

The rest of the bosses also have an interesting flow. Brawly has Bulk Up, which turns Makuhita into an absolute beast. He then hands you the TM for Bulk Up, which you may decide to employ against your next big battle. Only for Wattson to whip out paralysis and Selfdestruct, killing you instantly. So okay, status is good. Only for Flannery to go "I may be statuses, but have you tasted Overheat in the Sun?"

Every gym leader seems to build off previous concepts, and at a minimum, has a lead that is carefully designed to counteract possible strategies. Winona has Perish Song on Swablu, Sidney has Sand Attack and Roar, Phoebe has Curse, Wallace has Water Spout for absurd damage, and Steven has Toxic and Spikes. This is the first game to easily hand you boosting moves to play with, and its bosses are designed to teach that you can't just use them without repercussion. Which I think is a really interesting design, and shows the care and consideration they put into their fights.

This does, however, have the long-lasting effect of "just hitting them with sticks is the most effective plan." Four attacks to cover weaknesses remains the dominant strategy, and there's a lot less opponents do to counter that approach than there is countering the boosts or status. But then again, the boosting still works if you're careful. Trust me, you have not lived until you sweep the superboss with Mawile Baton Passing to Calm Mind Delcatty.

Speaking of, Steven Stone qualifies as one of my favorite fights here. I know I dunk on Red, but that has a lot to do with discrepancy of level. The difference between Red's best level and the top level of the League, the best grinding location, is 31. The difference between Wallace and Steven is 20. With the introduction of boosting moves, You also have a lot more options to work with. Despite that, Steven also employs a lot of nasty tricks, like lead Skarmory having Spikes and Toxic, Claydol having Dual Screens into Metagross, or the unbreakable nature of Cradily. Compared to GSC Red, who is very easily counterpicked by just switching around team members, Steven is much harder to counterpick. Unless you bring the legends. Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza are all excellent responses to him broadly.

I just have very little negative to say about Hoenn. I started this talking about how it used to be my least favorite, and that is true. Lacking my favorite Pokemon of the time was rough for my baby child brain to deal with. But you manage. You pick up new favorites, and they grow on you, and maybe you learn to love something new. And by god, did I learn to love Hoenn.

"Even the Battle Frontier?" Don't push it.

Ruby and Sapphire Corner Ruby and Sapphire are games I have not played in 20 years. This is not an exaggeration. They came out in 2002, Emerald came out in 2004, and I have only played Emerald since. Sapphire is one of the only games I don't physically own anymore. I wish I did...

Ruby and Sapphire are very different from Emerald. Aside from the changes made in Emerald to have both Magma and Aqua involved, Ruby and Sapphire also lack the Steven superboss, the Battle Frontier, and changed up a lot of the gym teams and layouts. I have seen a map of Ruby and Sapphire Tate and Liza's gym. No thank you. But of course, the big difference is that Rayquaza has story significance, and a whole event surrounding it.

Obviously, I consider Emerald far superior. But this is the time to talk about something I remember an old high school friend explaining to me. See, he preferred Ruby and Sapphire because of a single event: The Sky Pillar. In those games, Sky Pillar is 100% optional, and he greatly valued exploration and finding out something novel. To him, the best experience he had with the games was accidentally discovering the pillar, climbing it not knowing what would happen, and then running into Rayquaza. Which...fair enough! The third games do tend to put story emphasis on something that used to be a surprise benefit if you explored. I tend to like the added focus and story, but I can at least understand feeling like you found something magical just by putzing around.

So something happened and I suddenly became very very into pokemon. I found myself running 4 different directions at once: Pokemon Shield (no, no shiny elekid yet), Pokemon Go, Legends Arceus, and Let's go Eevee.

Pokemon Shield is the game that has gotten the least amount of attention. While I am still hatching eggs on occasion, me and Fen have put Shield aside for the time being and are playing through Arceus instead.

I think I just got bored hatching eggs. I never had one take so long to appear, so it just started making my mind feel dull and fuzzy whenever I tried. Even though I had moved on to hatching eggs while doing something else, such as watching a movie.

Thankfully, Fen is the best pokemon partner ever and it didn't take much convincing at all for him to agree to play Arceus with me in the meantime. I have leapt into this game at full speed without looking back. I forgot how beautiful it is! And how fun the catching system is. While catching and completing the pokedex is my favorite part of the games, I do also enjoy the challenge of battles. I even will occasionally agree to a battle with friends of which I already know the outcome - me being completely and utterly destroyed.

I don't play competitively so I don't have roles for my team(like tank?). Nor am I choosing team members based on what their max stats and endgame potential are. I just make a team with pokemon I like. I will focus on speed and attack/special attack, so I do am for jolly/timid, or adamant/modest natures to try to bring out their best potential. I will also boost the same stats with their EVs, and lastly try for the best IVs possible.

In Arceus, we are currently up to the 3rd map. I think it's my favorite one - it sure is pretty! I somehow managed to catch a shiny Zubat before even getting the shiny pokemon quest. I also found a shiny Kricketune, and even a shiny alpha Carnivine on the second map. From someone who didn't catch any shinies for nearly a decade (I never tried either), I do like these higher shiny rates in the newer games. A selfish part of me is wishing the shinies I find would actually be pokemon that I like...but I will never voice those words out loud! I know better, and truly am very very thankful for my unusual luck. Fen is usually the one with of the luck...so maybe he's somehow sharing some with me? It's a nice change in life! Thank you Fen!!

Evolution (aka "Evo", she/ her, cis girl) grew up in a small town :3 she never really knew what she wanted to "do" with her life? she had some dreams of going on adventures. but never really took them seriously

also! Evolution's family is just. the best. she has three moms (an espeon, an umbreon, and a slyveon) and five brothers (a flareon, jolteon, vaporeon, leafeon, and glaceon) :3

Evolution is. a sweetie pie <3 maybe not always the most clever. but she has a heart of gold and will ALWAYS be by your side

then there's Silver! (any but he/ him, AFAB demigirl) who is a shiny eevee :3 thus. "Silver". lol. Silver has two eeveelution parents (not sure what eeveelutions tbh) and no siblings. but, uh. Silver's parents kinda suck :/ they didn't wanna have a kid but kinda got stuck with one. but then! the child was a shiny female! which is really rare! so they basically used Silver as a prop to get into fancy social circles and stuff. and then Silver ran away, lol

Silver's name wasn't originally Silver! I haven't decided what its old name is, but Silver changed their name to distance herself from ver parents :') which is. part of why its so simple/ generic lol

Silver is. kind of an asshole? but that's what you get sometimes when you're raised like a prop rather than a living being, so- (also, Silver just. happens to end up in the town Evo lives in at the start of the story!)

then! there's Clue!!!!!! (he/ they, demiboy) Clue has ALWAYS wanted to be an adventurer. he left his home town (but keeps in contact with their dad, a jolteon! and their two little siblings, both eevees, named Tiny Rainbow and Soft Paws - another old oc recycling lol)

so! one of my favorite things about the world i've made up is called "pup names" :3 while they aren't exclusive to eevee pups, most other pokemon don't give their young pup names. since with eevees, there are so many possibilities for what they might turn into! it's hard for a parent to give them a name that will accurately represent them. so! eevees are usually given "pup names" - basically, they're given some simple, generic name, OR something really cutesy, but when they get older/ have a better idea of who they are/ want to be, they give themselves new names! (Soft Paws and Tiny Rainbow are pup names!! Evolution ISN'T a pup name, but it was just a nickname that stuck. so. lol)

the only story thing i really have is how the three eevees meet. Clue and Silver had both traveled to where Evolution lives, but, oh, no, someone is being mean to Clue and steals all of the fancy bows he decorates is tail/ mane with! Evolution is like "I'll save you!" and. Silver somehow gets dragged along idk.

they end up in a mystery dungeon! (oooooh!) but manage to escape. sadly, Clue still loses his bows :( but, Evolution has a little bit of money, so she spends it to buy Clue some new bows - rainbow ones! sadly, Evolution can only afford three (Clue had more before then) and they aren't the same as what he had before... but as a sign of friendship, Clue actually insists that Evolution and Silver both keep one! Clue puts their bow on his mane (like a bow-tie!) and Evolution her bow on her ear. Silver is hesitant because ze thinks it looks stupid (also because of the way its parents treated ve ._. but Evo and Clue don't know that!) but is eventually like "fine" and wears it on her tail "so, at least then, i won't have to see it!"

they all end up really caring about each other tho :3

oh, and i. don't have a name for the team yet ^^'

i gotta get into pmd blogs on tumblr,,, i love pmd so much :3 and i know you have a comic!! i've only looked at it a bit. but i love scout and pheobe so much <3 and also i've kinda been thinking about my own pmd team but i don't think i'm gonna do anything with them and also they don't fit the "traditional" team setup since they're three eevees but WHATEVER

Also yes polyninja (Jay x Cole x Kai x Zane) is a thing in this and this specifically pre-movie Lloyd (so maybe I’m not a big fan of the new seasons the designs and lore change caught me off okay)

Even after all these years, he still has a mischievous streak and likes to occasionally catch the other ninja off guard and prank them (which he had gotten very good at thanks to Jay’s teaching)

People say he’s the leader of the ninja, the ninja say he’s the gremlin

Sometimes he can’t help but manically cackle when he laughs

Worst sleeper of the ninja, besides Jay. He’s a night owl and an early bird, so good luck trying to make him sleep more than 5 hours.

Electro pop, rock, My Chemical Romance and Marina and the Diamonds for days.

Gets very uncomfortable and awkward around his fans, especially the more…bolder ones.

You thought Cole had a sweet tooth? Wait until you meet him. The ninja are banned from half of Ninjago’s candy stores because of him.

A good chunk of his clothes are hand-me-downs from the other ninja, some he just straight up stole without the other ninja knowing, the other half are from 3 AM emergency runs to the store for midnight snacks and he happened to find something that caught his interest

Because he’s a terrible sleeper, he can and will fall asleep anywhere if he’s not given anything to do. Leave him alone for more than 2 minutes? Boom, he’s running a free-death trial.

Because he’s the elemental master of energy his metabolism is extremely weird. Sometimes he’ll be able to eat twice as much as Cole does on the daily and gain no weight whatsoever, but other times he’ll have a few granola bars for a day and call it good.

Swears like a drunken sailor when none of the ninja are there to stop him

He can climb anything. He regularly goes out with Cole to mountain climb. Has no fear of heights whatsoever. One minute he’ll be on the ground the next he’s 50 feet above you.

Lloyd loves to ride in the shopping cart during late-night snack runs

His ears are a bit pointy

Sometimes he’ll put his hair up in a messy man-bun during training

Whatever you do, do not trust a word he says during April Fool’s Day

He likes getting spoiled but will never admit it

I got Mela done too Umby is quickly becoming an MPV for me (not surprising Umbreon is MY favorite Pokemon) as I ended up using him again in the Raid and also lead with him in the battle. This time Umby just kept spamming Fould Play until Tokoal ran out and when Revavroom came out I baby doll eyes spammed for two turns until the Revavroom finally knocked Umby out and it let the Drought wear off for Vapor (Vaporeon) to come in and finish Revavroom off in two turns. Somehow Mela decided to use Screech instead of any attacking moves against Vapor

As for the Titan Klawf, i started out with shellder and it was really rough, my shellder fainted easily against the first half of it and so did Chips the Skwovet and I had to bring Buddy, still a Maschiff at the time against it. I try to avoid using Buddy as much as possible since Arven technically wouldn't have Mabostiff at that point, but I had no choice in the matter. His team really is weak at this point. The second time, I did better since I managed to get Klawf all the way to red before it finally knocked Shelk the Shellder and Arven's own shellder out. Form there, a few bites from Chips got the Mystica.

So overall, Penny's route is going well so far, and she can theoretically knock out the Star Bases with little trouble. Arven... no so much, he socks. Then again it could be because I'm intentionally overlevelimg the Eevees because Penny is supposed to be the "strongest" of the Star Bosses so a little overleveling would match that and I definitely don't do it to ridiculous levels (Sylvie, naturally, was the strongest team member and she was lvl 31 to Mela's level cap of 26)

I'm not even bothering with Nemona. I'm sorry. Since I used Spriggatito for my starter, she sucks against the first 2 gyms, but otherwise, it isn't really much to speak of.

Yeah, Arven's team is probably the weakest since he's not supposed to be good at fighting but it sounds like you're going great!

Speaking of commentary, here's the A/N on the first chapter since it has a lot of my philosophy/reasoning behind writing it:

I must reluctantly confess that the story is named after a TVTrope. On top of being a pretty cool sounding name, the story is, as its core, a complete and total rejection of the trope and the ideas behind it. The trope in question is more or less the idea that personhood is inherently tied to humanity, and therefore ‘it's ok for someone like Batman to kill aliens, guys, they're not really people so it doesn't really break his no killing rule’. I've always hated this idea. Personhood is not something to be arbitrarily restricted by species to make ourselves feel special. Because Pokemon already plays with these ideas, it proved the perfect place to try my damnedest to push them to the extreme. I've read other Human x Pokemon fanfictions, but they tend to either try to somehow separate the main romantic lead from other Pokemon or are just straight up porn without any serious thought behind it. Not to put down other authors, many of whose work I genuinely enjoy, but I feel like this misses the point. It is made very clear in most media that Pokemon are equal in intelligence and emotional capabilities to humans, even having their own language. They are people, regardless of whether or not they're psychic or can speak human languages. However, they are not humans. They have different base instincts and anatomies, and that means they will inherently tackle certain problems differently; but just like humans with mental and physical differences, that doesn't take away from their personhood. I'm trying to express this with Hazel throughout the story. For example, in this chapter, she's able to communicate the things she wants in her sandwich but then immediately tries to scarf it down as her instincts momentarily take over. However, in the Pokemon universe, they are not entirely treated as people. While yes, they're treated better than animals are in reality, being given jobs and even occasional places of authority, they can still be legally kidnapped from their homes by ten year olds and are barred from entering certain spaces humans can. This strange dichotomy between how Pokemon act and how they're treated is part of what I love about the franchise due to the exploration that can be done regarding it. Ultimately, although the real reason I chose an Umbreon for the love interest is that they're my favorite Pokemon and I already had the Hazel character floating around for a while, it fits perfectly because Eevees are so obviously inhuman but are also so obviously people in the Pokemon universe that denying it would be absurd. This is why I placed the beginning of the romance well before the introduction of the communicator, because it is important for Jason to see his partner as a person without it; otherwise, the entire story would not go far enough in its complete and utter rejection of humano-centrism. It was the realization that his Pokemon is a person that allowed him to fall in love with her, so putting it after she becomes ‘more human' in a sense via being able to speak their language implies an inherent connection between humanity and personhood, a connection that is antithetical to the entire premise of the story. The communicator needs to exist as a way to reveal the Pokemon's pre-existing personhood to doubting humans, but it cannot be taken as the defining point of personhood. I fully expect this to be a story in search of an audience. I mean, a human x Pokemon fic featuring a non-anthropomorphic Pokemon that can't even speak English at first, complete with make out sessions and sexual references, but lacking explicit sex scenes? A Pokemon story with next to no battling outside of a few key moments, but filled with politicking? Who is this for other than myself? I don't know, but I love the idea so much that even if I'm the only reader, I still want to make it.

Tiara steals and plays on Kou's switch (it's fine because Kou isn't much of a gamer) and loves to run around and catch Pokemon so her brothers got her let's go!Eevee (they had to fight over which one she would like Kou said Pikachu and Teru said Eevee) and she can't stop playing with them! she nearly cries everytime a Pokemon faints so Teru battles for her (and secretly plays some for her character to go farther also he's a game addict) her favorite type is Fairy!

Sakura barely gives a shit whether her skirts flair up in the wind but she does make sure they don't just to be modest, also it comes naturally for nature to never ruin her hair or clothes idk...

what's your personal story with lumineon? i'm really happy to see empoleon, cradily, and fidough here since they're some of my own favorites! - 🦢

ogh ty for asking, i forget if i've shared this before but even if i have i'm doing it again LOL

even though FRLG was my first pokemon game, for a variety of reasons, i consider sinnoh/gen 4 to be my true childhood pokemon games. despite this, my childhood memory is extremely spotty (i am almost 24 years old + i have a severe dissociative disorder, i don't remember shit ever LOL) and so my memories of actually playing gen 4 are very few and far between. but lumineon is involved in two of the ones i still manage to hold onto

in pokemon diamond, i actually completed the natdex as a child, which was an arduous process that took me a Really long time, i don't know how long. i unfortunately no longer have this save file. gen 4 was obviously the dawn of wifi features and i always wanted to complete my dex in FRLG but i couldn't because i didn't have the hardware/games to trade with myself and i didn't have friends (in fact i was bullied pretty severely for liking pokemon, i had to change schools) so when i could use the GTS and trade with people online i got VERY excited about dex completion, and just like, interacting with people. i managed the task with a mix of breeding eevees and evolving them into eeveelutions as trading chips on the GTS and using my mom's yahoo account without her permission to ask for trades from people on fucking Yahoo Answers lol (sorry mom SDJKSD)

i don't actually remember doing most of this, i was just able to put it back together with context clues from my pearl file that survived and things i am just vaguely aware happened but don't actually have Sensory Memory of. BUT what i do remember is that one night i realized i was finally almost done and somehow the finneon line is the one line of pokemon i never got. they were the Final Dex Entries i needed. i did everything in a really weird order and wasn't prioritizing the sinnoh regional dex lol

so i went and caught a finneon and grinded it to evolve it into lumineon. i think the reason i remember this is because i was so close to being done, i was way more impatient with grinding than usual, and then just like. the sheer pride and relief i felt when that finneon evolved and then scrolling through the complete dex list is like nothing i had ever felt before gonna be honest. high point of my childhood

even back then i formed an attachment to lumineon in this moment and i used that lumineon for other stuff in sinnoh. i don't remember how i found this out, but one of the first competitive doubles strategies i ever learned was that thunder always hits in rain, and i knew that my lumineon had rain dance through level-up and i had a luxray with thunder, and i was Obsessed with pokemon battle revolution, so i have a brief memory of spamming thunder with my luxray after setting up the rain with lumineon and being really proud of myself for that (even though there's way more optimal ways to do this that i'm aware of now LOL, cut me some slack i was 8 years old)

this is a really long explanation cause i wanted to really emphasize WHY this meant so much to me as a kid but tldr lumineon was the last remaining pokemon left for me to get the dex entry for in sinnoh as a kid and it was a culmination of a lot of months of work and then i went on to use that lumineon in battles and yeah shoutout to lumineon

My Collection: Flareon

In my quest to get more Eeveelutions I have taken to farming for legendaries. While exhausting, it’s a great way to trade for legit shinies, so meet my new Flareon, Bastila (extra points for people who know where her name is from)!

Bastila has a very playful personality. While talking to her she couldn’t stop hopping around and posing! Of course while walking around she was all business. Despite taking multiple pictures with my other Eeveelutions she only really seemed to hang out with Undine. Undine is a camera ham though and with the camera turned on Bastila Undine somehow managed to squeeze herself into almost all of the photos until I took Bastila out for some solo shots!

I was not fortunate enough to get a shiny Eevee during the sponsored PoGo event over the weekend (although I did get a handful of non-shiny unown) so this might be the last Eeveelution update for awhile while I dig deep into my Pokémon coffers to see what I can trade for.

Flareon reminds me a lot of Charmander and Charmeleon as a shiny. While Flareon is a little more subtle, they’re all slightly bleached versions of the original. My favorite part about Flareon is the little cream puff on their heads and their little bean feet! Ok maybe the bean feet are pretty universal to all of the Eeveelutions but they’re still pretty awesome.

If you are looking to get your own shiny Flareon, the easiest way to get one is still the guaranteed shiny Eevee special research in PoGo. Outside of that your options become a little harder as the games make it more difficult to farm shiny Eevee traditionally. However it’s not unheard of for people to run into shiny Flareon in the Dynamax cave or dens!

Lastly here’s a little treat of all of my shiny Eeveelutions smiling (that’s Espeon’s smile lol)! This is an actual picture I printed out with the instax mini printer. It’s an expensive but cute way to print out physical pictures of your Pokémon!

Krenko’s Guide to Pokemon: Eevee Line

Part 1. Because seriously.

DESIGN:

Eevee was intentionally designed to be some sort of generic wild critter that could exist but doesn’t. Given traits of all sorts of small, furry things, the purpose of Eevee is to be cute, lovable, and evoke the feeling of ‘some animal.’ It is simultaneously known to everyone and completely unknown. Everyone recognizes Eevee but nobody actually knows what it is.  Eevee is, above all else, THE ‘normal’ Pokemon.

And honestly, it’s totally freaking adorable. Eevee is the best rabbit dog fox kitty thing that ever was, and nobody doesn’t love Eevee. Its design basically couldn’t be better. There’s a reason this fuzzlewuzzle regularly competes with Pikachu for being the face of Pokemon. Sure, it can’t quite win, but it’s up there.

But the concept of Eevee is really the interesting one. Eevee was the first Pokemon with branching evolutions, and while other Pokemon have gotten such since then, Eevee has always had the most. Starting with three in Generation 1, there are currently eight possible evolutions of Eevee, and there could easily be more on the way. This puts the Eevee line in a really notable position. I always love when a Pokemon has a unique gimmick, and while in combat each Eeveelution might just be another, having an Eevee with so many options to choose from makes it an interesting Pokemon to obtain.

But before we discuss the designs of any evolutions, let’s talk about the non-evolved alternate form: Gigantamax. Like Pikachu and Meowth, GIgantamax Eevee is just a gimmick. The Pokemon’s not strong enough to be used, and Gigantamax Eevee can’t actually evolve, so it’s just there to be big and fluffy and cute… and it just fails at that. It’s not that Gigantamax Eevee isn’t cute- of course it is- but it’s not cuter than Eevee is normally, and the big bushy collar isn’t nearly as fun of a unique touch as Meowth being memes or Pikachu going back to its fat gen 1 design. Sadly, Gigantamax Eevee is a waste of everyone’s time.

And now onto the actual evolutions.

VAPOREON: 

Vaporeon is an interesting and unique creature, with large fins on its head and small ones down its back and tail giving it the appearance of a fish, but still with a clearly mammalian mouth and legs. Vaporeon is clearly aquatic and clearly related to Eevee, but other than that it simply doesn’t look like anything. And yet Vaporeon still has a clear design and aesthetic, as something that could maybe possibly be something between a dog, a seal and a dolphin. It’s an elegant, clean design that looks fantastic without looking absurd. 

JOLTEON:

Jolteon’s just yellow with spikes. It’s simple, but it works. There’s nothing weird about Jolteon’s design in the least, though admittedly that means there’s nothing overly special about it. Jolteon is just what happens when you take Eevee and make it cool, and other than the bright coloration there’s nothing particularly odd about it. One of the more subdued Eeveelutions, I like it, it’s cool, but I don’t exactly have specific praise for it.

FLAREON:

Flareon looks even more realistic than Jolteon. The red coloration’s a bit bright, but other than that it’s just a big ol’ floofy floof. The shape and color of its fur suggest fire, but unlike many fire types it doesn’t feel the need to actually be on fire.  Like Jolteon, Flareon is a good, clean design.

It’s also noteworthy here that the first three Eeveelutions have big collars, like Eevee does. The rest do not. Honestly, I really like this part of the design, but I understand why not all would have it.

ESPEON:

The psychic evolution, Espeon’s purple colors are a bit more out there than the previous three,  and my first instinct when looking at it is that it’s supposed to be hairless like a Sphynx Cat, but then it has those huge tufts on the side of its face that are clearly hair despite it not having tufts or even signs of fur anywhere else. They’re too high to be whiskers, too, so they just come across as weird. In fact, everything about Espeon is weird, and not always for the better. The split tail is a cool design, but I don’t understand what it’s going for. The jewel on the forehead I DO understand as a psychic focus, but it’s so obviously artificial compared to the previous Eeveelutions that it feels out of place. In fact, the core concept of Espeon feels a bit out of place. Most of the Eeveelutions are the result of stone or location radiation, and Umbreon happens at night. Espeon levels up in the day time with affection, and somehow becomes a psychic type. A psychic type whose pokedex entry calls the Sun Pokemon. 

Eevee’s whole gimmick is that when exposed to weird stuff it transforms, so I have a hard time understanding why a happy Eevee turns into a psychic type during the day. If it was just about the strong bond with its trainer, why does the sun matter? And if the sun does matter, what’s going on with its everything?

Espeon ultimately just doesn’t work for me. It reads wrong as a creature and I don’t understand how it fits in with other Eevee lore.

UMBREON:

Okay, what’s up with those circles? Black fur I get. Gold stripes I get. Floofy tail, red eyes, sleek body, sure sure sure. I am totally on board with that. But those clean, obvious golden rings absolutely take me out of this design. I get that they’re supposed to be moonlight rings or something, but I’d have been much happier if this thing had golden spots instead of such clean shapes, to make it look more like a realistic animal. 

As far as actually fitting though, it makes sense as a Night-based Pokemon, but the Moon thing is a bit more of a stretch. It’s not nearly as bad as Espeon and the Sun, but Eevee plus Moonlight should result in a brighter, glowing Eevee, not a darker, more sinister Eevee.  Umbreon also has a serious issue of its abilities not being what it says they are. For example, the Pokedex says it’s got poison; Umbreon has never naturally learned a poison type attack. Its rings glowing is supposed to be one of its key features, but none of its abilities reflect that.

This isn’t to say that I dislike Umbreon or Espeon overall. Some of my favorite Pokemon have been Umbreons and Espeons. Their designs just really don’t sell the story that they’re trying to.

LEAFEON:

So, now this is more like what I’m talking about. Eevee + Moss Rock/Leaf Stone = Eevee that’s turning into a plant. It’s still an animal, but with its ears and tail and some of its fur turning into leaves so it can now photosynthesize. Also the leaf is a sword because that’s bitchin’.

Now, while I am totally on board with Leafeon’s concept, I do think the design could’ve used a bit of tweaking. The head and tail are great, but the little leaf things coming off the body look a bit odd, and I’m not really sold on the mostly tan color scheme. I think it’d have looked better with more browns and greens. Specifically, brown legs and belly, green back and neck. Maybe a leafy collar like the original Eeveelutions all had collars. Still, I like it overall.

GLACEON:

I don’t particularly like Glaceon. While it reads as an Ice Eevee it doesn’t read as an Eevee infused with Ice or adapted to Ice so much as it reads as an Eevee with design elements that look ice-like. The sharp diamond shapes over it don’t actually have anything to do with ice the way Jolteon’s spikes are the result of electric charge or Flareon’s floof looks like fire. Further, the addition of what is clearly a hairdo is just sort of weird. It’s too sharp to look like it comes naturally and while it makes for an interesting visual element it doesn’t mean anything or serve any purpose in the Glaceon itself. At least Espeon’s split tail was supposed to be for sensing things. Glaceon just has huge flaps that are definitely a disadvantage in a fight and don’t seem to serve any purpose other than possibly attracting a mate. 

Glaceon is a solid design for a creature but not for ‘this is an Eevee mutated by the ice element.’

SYLVEON:

OH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ABOMINATION!?!?

Oh, it’s a cute fairy Eevee that’s pink and blue with ribbons and bows? You’d think so, and I don’t mind the color scheme for a fairy type but THOSE ARE NOT RIBBONS AND BOWS. Those are ‘feelers.’ Those are FLESH. Fur-covered, wriggly, boneless flesh. 

This is bad. This is wrong. This is not okay.

This is not a fairy. This is an eldritch horror. Foxes should not have tentacles, and tentacles should not have fur. 

And that’s not even getting into how much I hate Sylveon’s evolution method. Eevee evolves into Sylveon when it has affection and knows a fairy type move… but Eevee can just learn Baby-Doll Eyes on its own at level 15, so this isn’t a feat or anything special, it’s just a normal part of raising an Eevee. The worst part is that this is some weird new and special method to explain why you couldn’t have done it before, but the only actual change here is that Eevee didn’t learn Baby-Doll Eyes naturally before, so instead of something being discovered the world has just been rewritten to allow Sylveon to exist.

Because Sylveon is a monster from outside reality that has forced its way in here.

I hate Sylveon. I hate Sylveon so much. And to truly understand how much I hate Sylveon you need to understand that I love Eevee. I have two Eevee on my nightstand- named Artemis and Apollo after my Espeon and Umbreon from Gold and Silver. I make it a point to use Eeveelutions in every game, because I love them so much. One of my oldest RP characters was a Jolteon named Flash. On Halloween, I had one of my video game characters dress up as an Eevee to go to a costume party in an MMO. Which obviously didn’t have an Eevee costume so I had to assemble it. So my hate for Sylveon isn’t just ‘oh, this is an icky Pokemon,’ but I take its existence as an insult to Eevee, who I love so much.

TYPING:

What type do you want? Eeveelutions come in eight different types, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. But that’s Pokemon for you. And in the future we’ll probably get even more types. I just hope they have good designs and aren’t disgusting abominations.

STATS OVERVIEW:

We’ll talk about stats of Eeveelutions individually, but for now let’s note what they all have in common: numbers. Every evolved form of Eevee has a 130, a 110, a 95, two 65s, and a 60, for a total of 525 base stats, making for Pokemon that are highly specialized in some areas and very weak in others. This results in all of them having at least a decent stat array, except for Flareon, though whether their array is offensive, defensive, or more balanced varies.

Eeveelutions by Endivinity

MOVES OVERVIEW:

As with stats, we’ll discuss them for individual evolutions, but as they’re all evolved from Eevee they do share a large amount of their move pool. Eevee is notorious for learning Baton Pass naturally, a move so powerful and useful it’s been banned in many formats, and though it requires chain breeding, Eevee’s one of a relatively small number of Pokemon that can learn Wish.

Yawn, Substitute, Protect, and Rest all offer strategic options, and though not available in the current generation, Eevee could previously learn Toxic. 

Actual attack forms for Eevee to learn pre-evolution are pretty limited, but an Eevee can learn Shadow Ball and Iron Tail, both of which have their uses.

Eevee does have a number of unique attacks, primarily from Let’s Go Eevee but also the Z-Move Extreme Evoboost. While all of these are viciously powerful to the point of being outright broken, Eevee’s evolved forms can’t learn them, and thus they’re not relevant in most competitive play. 

Next time, we’ll start going down the list of forms and discussing them in the specifics. This one’s a doozy.

It’s partly my fault when it happens. Like I’ve said before, I’m an aspie, and part of what that means is I struggle to understand situations emotionally. I can come off as insensitive or read the mood wrong which often leads to people misunderstanding my intentions or where I’m coming from.

More often than not, what I’m saying will make 100% sense to me but not the person/people reading it. I also stick a lot more firmly to my opinions than I should because people tell me I fold too easily, and I come off as more egotistical than I actually am to cover up my low self-esteem lol.

UGH, I remember watching that show and being so annoyed because I really liked Marco and Jackie and wanted them to be a thing but I knew that they’d pull Starco in the end because of course they would.

It also totally makes it seem as if love is the most powerful relationship there is (aros would like a word), which is so bizarre when there are so many “power of friendship” tropes. Like, a male and female lead have to get together because their relationship is the strongest.

But she's actually a lonely girl who's driven insane by the fact that nothing around her is real. She latches on to you because you're the only other person who's real and sapient and has got a mind of their own. You're literally her outlet to the outside world.

She's personally my favorite character in the game due to her actually being a more fleshed out, sympathetic(and not in the idealized "moemoe" way), and realistic take on the Yandere archetype(which, like many moe archetypes, is kinda misogynistic in nature in that it reinforces submissiveness; it's basically animes version of "woman scorned".). So it makes sense that people would sympathize with her and want her to become real, because all she's ever wanted was to be real and to talk to real people. Especially since she really did care about her friends and even returned them back to life because she saved their backup files, taking herself out of the picture.

I read a few "Monika becomes real and lives with you" fanfictions where she's really sweet and not at all crazy and cares for you a lot, and it's never felt the same as all those other "Yandere/psycho lives with you and is your girl/boyfriend" type stories precisely because those stories tend to just glorify possessive partners that kill your loved ones, drive your family members to commit suicide, and tear up your stuffed animals and dollies for the sake of it, rather than go into why they're so crazy for you, and often reinforce Stockholm Syndrome.

Plus, those "things" she talks about in the empty room? They're actually quite smart and make you think about the world for a bit. Not many "crazy" type characters actually get that. They're all about how "I'll slice your boyfriend open with an axe if you don't date me wa ha ha", and even if they're not, it's all the fandom will focus on, to the point of ignoring any and all other aspects to their character. Because that "crazy in love" aspect is the most appealing part of them. Maybe it's due to forbidden fruit/bad boy(or girl) appeal? Who knows? But I'm starting to wonder if it's still as bad if people recognize the problematic aspects of "crazy in love" characters or "dysfunctional" relationships.

Because if they recognize it's not real and don't really want it for themselves, then it's probably not much of a problem. But if they just go on wanting it to be real and never take a step back and go "wait a minute, this isn't real love; they're only together because he latches onto the first girl to show him any kindness and affection and she's a doormat who doesn't want something bad to happen if she leaves him", then that's bad.

Obviously it's not as bad as being in love with literal stalkers, killers, and rapists in real life(which is an actual thing, believe it or not, it's called hybristophilia), because fictional characters will never be real. Karma Akabane will never be real. Yuno Gasai will never be real. JD will never be real. But loving fictional characters who do those things and not realizing the problem with it may cause people to seek out real criminals, so it's best to separate fiction from reality.

I can’t help judging a little internally, but yeah, I think people can ship whatever as long as it has that “not in real life” scenario going for it. It’s ultimately fiction, so just because I don’t like it and/or think that it’s bad doesn’t mean other people can’t ship it.

It reminds me of the phrase "you're pretty for a black girl", which, while it's never been said to ME, I have heard other people complain about. It's sick and it hurts, just like this. And the few people who didn't say things like that still said that they couldn't get into the show at first because it looked "girly and vapid", before changing their minds and thinking that the show either proved their biases about girly shows wrong, no longer think it's girly since girly shows "can't" be good, or like it "despite" it's girliness.

And there were 70 reviews in all. 70 reviews full of this misogynistic "girly is bad" shit. So in conclusion nearly all the reviews on TV Tropes for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic were along the lines of one of three things. 1) "This show is girly so I looked past it because girly shows are dumb." 2) "This show is good despite being girly/the characters are good despite being girly." and 3) "This show is not girly to me at all because it is well-written and captivating and girly shows aren't capable of such things."

Granted, some people there were able and willing to call out those who judged the show badly for being girly(or gave it the "not like other girls" treatment, but in show form), as well as people warning other potential viewers to get rid of any potential bias they may have against it due to it being girly. But there were still more people insulting its girliness as a reason they think it sucks or denying its girliness to justify their liking of it than the other way around.

I would've accepted it in the form of "If you think this show is bad because of its inherent girliness, then you are wrong!" or "This show is proof that a show being girly or aimed at girls doesn't and shouldn't take away from its value, as people seem to believe." or "A girl can be girly and be a strong female character.", but no, instead I got shit like this. It's especially insulting when TV Tropes is a site that devotes itself in part to critiquing sexist tropes found in media, only to turn right around and reinforce them.

I don’t read TV Tropes that frequently, so I fortunately missed out on all of these complete idiots who associate girly products with being bad.

You shouldn't have to be forced include women because their presence should be a given.

How many stories nowadays take place in the war front in Viking times or whatever? A lot of men just don't want to include female characters or see them represented(well) in media because those who are overrepresented tend to want to stay that way. They likely also have insecurities about their masculinity and are worried about female characters flooding their shows with estrogen and ruining the shows they love, because they can't relate to female characters or enjoy shows about them without negating their girliness(ie. This show seems girly, but it's actually good), since they're ashamed to associate themselves with anything feminine due to looking down on women or seeing them as bad.

Plus they want to be the center of everything so the second a show is about mostly women they get upset and claim it's "sexist against men" because it's not about them. Hence why bronies(bless their souls) are made fun of for the grave sin of enjoying a female-centric show with a female protagonist and largely female characters. Granted, there are some freaky fans, but there's still some sexism at play here.

This reminds me of a post I saw about a boy who actually looked up to female characters because you can pick a role model who doesn’t fit your gender. Crazy concept, I know. ;P

And yeah, that’s how it goes with equality. People who are best/most represented don’t want equality because they think it means less for them and they don’t want that, like a child who doesn’t want to share their cookies with everyone else.

They're MEANT to show that being a tomboy is not the only way to be strong, and TV Tropes acknowledges that! But then they also go and claim these characters have "Tomboy Streaks" thus undermining the positive message by insinuating that you have to be tomboyish to be strong and that even girly girls have to have some level of masculinity to be deemed respectable and equal human beings, plus manipulating many impressionable folks into thinking strength and bravery is automatically tomboyish.

Worse yet, they often put a character here because "she's a big eater" or "she burps/farts a lot". Gee, I didn't know women had bodily functions? I didn't know women had digestive systems? So basically any time a girl shows that she is a human being and not a pretty, passive doll to be idealized, she is acting like a man. Because only men are fully-fledged human beings. Even outside of that, look at basically any masculinity-femininity contrast trope(Tomboy and Girly Girl, Sensitive Guy and Manly Man, Masculine Girl Feminine Boy, etc.). The "masculine" character will often be described as dominant, assertive, or outspoken, and the "feminine" character will often be called weak-willed, passive, emotional, and timid. It's fucking sickening.

The Tomboy With A Girly Streak trope is similar to its inverse in that a tomboyish girl will often be placed under this trope with their proclaimed "girly" streak being that she's tender or cries a lot or is soft spoken/a doormat. Because being girly is about not taking up too much space, not having any ambition or aspiration, and overall being a weak and shallow waste of space. For a site that claims to dismantle such sexist misconceptions, it sure does reinforce them just as much.

I almost want to stop using TV Tropes based on that and many other reasons, but it's a genuinely informative site that at least tries to avoid these stereotypes(plus it's edited by more than one person), it just doesn't do enough. For example, they made an awkward claim once that women can't fight while on their periods, and even have an Improbably Female Cast trope, as if it's abnormal that a cast could consist of mostly women and demands an explanation. To them, femininity=inferior.

And then in comes the “anti-girl tomboy” characters who basically do everything “girls don’t do;” glares at things like make-up and such, rolls eyes at the subject of “girl talk” or “romance,” drinks anything carbonated and spreads their legs wide open, etcetera.

Guys really don’t get the same version, at least not that I’m aware of? Like, at best, they don’t participate in “guy things” but that’s about it.

Having characters acknowledge it just makes everything more blatant, like if a woman comes by and the guys have to assure “DON’T WORRY, SHE’S LIKE ONE OF THE GUYS.”

It’s like a woman can only hang out and engage in “guy talk/time” (the concept of which I hate but that’s besides the point) if they can crush a beer can against their forehead.

For example, they have a trope called Men Are Generic, Women Are Special, which points out the bias of male being the default, and yet on almost every other page on the wiki describing a trope, the default character will be a "he"(especially if it's a character trope), and whenever they mention "The Hero" or "The Big Bad" it's always a he unless it needs to be female(like if the heroine is in a romance story, or if the villain is a seductress). Female characters at best, can hope to be "The Heart" or "The Chick" of the group(which is often used in a demeaning way).

They even have a trope called "Improbably Female Cast" in which they point out all the instances of a story's setting having an "over-abundance" of women or girls with no men in sight, and claim that such stories have majority female characters when it is "unusual" "unlikely" or "lacks justification". Someone even suggested that the trope should be called "Where Are All The Men?" as if there's something inherently weird or wrong when a story is dominated by female characters, and like the story is in dire need of men, as if only men can be protagonists.

Even if the story has a justifiable reason for having mostly women, the fact that the writer made that choice at all is somehow deserving of mention. The mere fact that there's no "Improbably Male Cast" trope shows where the site's biases lay. They don't see anything wrong with a show being dominated by men with little to no female representation(ex. Death Note), and yet a show dominated by women(ex. MLPFIM) is somehow an anomaly and demands an explanation(even if the story does provide a reason for it, TV Tropes will still list it and presume it "improbable", as if to say "I mean, yeah, but there's no reason why you couldn't just make them mEn instead", as if writers who have mostly female characters are going out of their way to steer away from the "default" males.

In fact, they even admit that "Men Are Generic, Women Are Special" is their reason for having such a trope, but not the inverse. They even say that it's not the trope if the show revolves around a group of girlfriends with no indication of the gender ratio in the wider setting. So any time the females outnumber the males a story it's instantly labeled "improbable" because there's NO WAY any setting AT ALL could have more females than males. That's improbable! You see, this is why when women are 1/3 of the people in a given space men perceive it as "majority female" because they're uncomfortable with women having more of a presence than men.

We'll never have true equality if shows with majority female casts continue to be scrutinized under a microscope and assumed to be of inferior, lesser quality, just because there's no male characters around and it's women who are driving the plot. My problem isn't that they have a trope for majority female casts, it COULD be a testament to gender equality(ie., "there used to not be a lot of shows revolving around women, but now they're becoming increasingly common and well-known), but it's that they single out such stories as "unlikely" and thus discredit them.

And worse yet, they refuse to change the name, because they don't see a problem with it. So now every single show that doesn't have an equal number of males and females or more males than females is going to be called "improbable" by TV Tropes, because there's something(bad) to be said about shows that choose to make most of their characters women. Death Note and Naruto can slide by the radar of having loads of men, but Madoka Magica and Touhou are "improbable"? Because they have loads of women?

lol but seriously, I think the Cake Song is just meant to be one of those “weird but meant to be dEeP” things that shows do sometimes to be cool (not a criticism technically; depends on how it’s used).

I think the cake is the labyrinth and Homura saying that she’s the pumpkin makes her the odd one out since pumpkins are associated with scares and halloween, so it’s “foreshadowing” her being the witch. The things that they say they are... they’re like--ingredients for a meal, but not a cake, so the the cake is the labyrinth and they’re the things that would go inside it.

Homura and Madoka are the only ones who really get descriptions to go with them. Homura says that she’s “full of seeds” (despair?) and Madoka implies that it’ll bring sweet dreams once she’s sliced (which is either referring to the godly freedom given to magical girls before they turn into witches, or foreshadowing Madoka being “split” after Homura stops Madoka from purifying her, leading to Homura’s “sweet dream” of what it’s like when everything is “normal” after her reality twisting).

And it’s always like, “okay here’s this character’s backstory to make you feel emotionally attached--HA NOW THEY’RE DEAD. SEE??? WE TOTALLY GOT YOU.”

He only watched those shows after making Madoka Magica and admitted they were weird to him. Well, maybe they wouldn't be weird if you actually used them as inspiration! Reminds me of how, on TV Tropes, someone suggested that there should be a "Weak" and "Strong" Bechdel Test, where "Weak" refers to the women talking about something other than men because it is literally what's relevant at the moment(such as two female police officers discussing how to catch a female killer), thus applying the Bechdel Test there seems semi-void, while "Strong" is when they could talk about men but choose not to(ie. two female students talking about their grades during lunch).

And just to clarify about the "Strong" one, when I say they could talk about men but choose not to, this isn't to imply that female characters should talk about men, or that something's wrong with them for not talking about men, just that there's nothing stopping them from doing so, but they choose to talk about something unrelated to men. I think this strategy is much better than the test we have because it makes conversations between female characters seem more real since they're discussing things other than men of their own volition, rather than the non-male-centered talk being because they have to talk about it in-universe. I say that because The Bechdel Test serves to show that women's lives don't and shouldn't revolve around men, and they can talk about other things if they want to, but if the conversation is because they have to(like the example I gave), that gives sexists the opportunity to go "Yeah, well, they're only talking about it because it's their job!"

But if the female characters talk about things other than men of their own free will(as in, when the option is still there), then it shows that women really do have their own free will to talk about their own things and that there is NO REASON to not pass the Bechdel Test in today's day and age(I keep hearing people claim the test is stupid and doesn't matter, but then it should be easy to pass). "Oh, but if they had the choice, they would talk about men." No, because men don't sit around and talk about the women in their lives all day so why should women talk about the men in their lives all day? And to the people saying these types of tests are getting in the way of their "creativity", well, now that we know that you think female representation is stupid and something you have to be forced to do, we don't have to listen to a word you say. ;)

I like the idea of adjusting the Bechdel Test for other circumstances and expanding it as such!

You could also extend it to things like sexualization, because--I mean, having two female characters who talk to each other probably doesn’t mean much if they’re half-dressed or the writer wanted to make them bisexual for “The Fanservice.”

It's not that you can't deconstruct the genre at all, but it's almost never done tastefully and the magical girl themes are just a cover used to explain the suffering the girls go through. :(

Another thing about magical girl deconstructions is that they often reinforce patriarchal themes, like that girls shouldn't want things for themselves and that genuinely doing something for someone while also having ulterior motives that help yourself are a BAD BAD BAD thing, no matter how ultimately harmless they are, even if they help everybody involved. They also tend to reinforce Tall Poppy Syndrome and portray the powers as harmful or a bad thing, implying that girls shouldn't have power.

Honestly, I think there can totally be even more substance in magical girl anime that doesn’t have to resort to “make it eDgY” (which I feel like is a slippery slope that can easily come off as lazy); for example, I’d really enjoy seeing something deeper to magical girl powers than something like, “oh, this magical girl happens to have the power that fits their personality,” such as a magical girl who has a power she feels she doesn’t fit but it’s a matter of perspective/seeing herself differently, or a magical girl who does have the powers that “fit” her personality - like a “fiery” girl with fire powers - and the weaknesses in her powers correlate to the weaknesses in her personality, so she has to either iron out those issues or find workarounds, as true “perfection” isn’t possible nor practical, which is something all the girls have to accept despite whatever pressure they’re under.

.I dunno, I like lore and powers revolving around metaphors. It’s fun.

People can say whatever they want about Sailor Moon and Pretty Cure, but ultimately they also had dark and dangerous themes(to the point where some kids had nightmares), but ultimately allowed the girls to rise above the hell they went through and find the strength in them to save the day. We feel bad for them when they die, not because they're moe girls, but because we were actually given the time to form a connection with them and want to see them succeed, rather than just be expected to pity them because they're cute manipulated girls. That way, when they ultimately save the day, it's all the more satisfying. Princess Tutu was a deconstruction that actually went about it in the right way, because the girls eventually found the courage to defeat their enemies in a way that made sense. Why the hell is it a "good" thing to subvert that?

No clue, but I basically agree with everything there. I mean, Madoka Magica’s entire stick is basically that all the girls are like “uwu” in terms of the style (with Madoka being the “cutest” of them all) and then being put in this dark and edgy plot+setting; it’s for both the shock value and the “contrast” of having “moe” characters be thrust into these situations to essentially die.

And the conclusion doesn’t end up being satisfying (at least to me) because the villain doesn’t have emotions so he’s just like “owo” (seriously, I wouldn’t hate on Rebellion so much if Kyubey had been given emotions rather than going crazy; Homura can basically do whatever she wants and it was SUCH A MISSED OPPORTUNITY) so it ends up being more about the journey getting there like wow look at all the sUbvErSiOnS and dEaTh we had along the way!

Because at the end of the day, it’s still like, “the girls give into their ‘hysterical emotions’ in the end basically no matter what,” even if they get saved by Madoka in the end.

Not to mention how the show seems to forget that the Incubators are villains and even seems to put them in the right and the girls in the wrong, what with the claim that they rationalize with the girls they make contracts with like sentient human beings(yeah, because emotionally manipulating young girls and literally taking their souls out of their bodies and making them liches without their consent is definitely treating them like sentient human beings), and that they always follow up on their end of the deal whereas it's the girls' faults their wishes go sour because they never wish for what they truly want(I'm sorry, but I simply DO NOT buy that. Homura and Mami outright wished for what they wanted. Their wishes went sour because the plot "decided" that they should have wished in a different way; plus, you're telling me that if Sayaka had outright said she wished "for Kyousuke to love her back" that the show wouldn't just "make" him mind-controlled or have Sayaka "outgrow" her feelings by the time he falls in love with her, all the while making it out to be "her" fault he's so heartbroken because she was some kind of tease or whatever, further demonizing girls' sexualities?).

Plus they explicitly claim that every woman in history was a magical girl and that without them, humanity would still be in caves(as in, humanity wouldn't be able to progress without the oppression and exploitation of women, and women can't gain power without going insane because female power is some unhealthy, inhuman, infernal thing.). Even if we take this all as a reflection of patriarchal society(which I highly doubt it was, if anything, it reinforces it), all it does is imply that the oppression of women is the natural order of things, required even.

As for the girls themselves, they routinely beat themselves up and the show makes no effort to tell them they're wrong(up until the massive cop-out of an ending), like how Sayaka's last words before becoming a witch are literally her "admitting" that she was "stupid, so stupid" for wanting a boy to love her and be healed of his infirmity. It just seems like we're supposed to think "you know, maybe the Incubators aren't that bad!" while ignoring that the girls are being treated like the disposable trash bags of the universe. This show already does the magical girl genre dirty but treating it like everything the Incubators did was necessary and like it's all the girls' faults these things happened to them in the first place is the icing on the stale, sour cake. Nothing like a giant heap of sexism to help get you through your day. :/

I’ve noticed this a lot in Miraculous, but Madoka Magica somehow does it worse; this “one (supposed) mistake leads to all of these consequences you never saw coming.”

Like Ladybug calling Lila out. We know that Lila’s pettiness in “Chameleon” shows that it wouldn’t matter whether Ladybug yelled at her or not; the simple fact that Marinette opposes a liar led to Marinette getting expelled, even if only for a while. Then there’s “Miracle Queen” and all that garbage that came with it.

These two shows put their teenage girls through hell for having emotions and there’s no way to undo it.

Like, let's go through their arguments one-by-one to prove that they don't hold up. First of all, other Magical girl shows also got very dark. Princess Tutu and Utena are also "darker" takes on the genre, but even more lighthearted shows like Sailor Moon and Precure had scary moments.

The only difference is, with them, they still managed to critique problematic aspects of the genre and actually provided ways to improve it, while STILL managing to keep their target audience(FEMALES) in mind, without condescending to them and infantilizing them. And they still showed the girls being empowered and overcoming the darkness.

In Madoka, there's none of that, there's no actual critique of the genre because Gen didn't have the respect for it to do his research, it's aimed at men so it doesn't keep female viewers in mind by definition(which is also another reason why it can't be a deconstruction; deconstructions should be done FOR its target audience), and the girls are constantly put down and treated like Moe crybabies by the narrative even when they're not(cause, you know, teenage girls are "emotional"!). And it doesn't offer ways the genre could improve, it just takes a female-empowering genre and twists it to be this system of oppression that the genre is meant to avoid.

Magical Girls tend to have a very strong focus on girls empowering girls and all that awesome stuff, and yet when Madoka and Mami form a special bond and Madoka encourages Mami by telling her she's not alone? It makes her big-headed and overconfident and she gets devoured by Charlotte. See what happens when girls rely on each other? Madoka is Sayaka's best friend, but gets pushed aside in favor of Kyoko, who later dies for Sayaka because girls who want to help each other had better be prepared to suffer and die for their beliefs. Sayaka loses everything, which happens to include her best friend, over a guy. And the whole witch process means that any female solidarity that could be found in the show is thrown out the window since the core concept of the show is girls being forced to brutalize and kill and exploit each other.

People act like Madoka is Yuri when it's not, Gen was asked if Homura really was in love with Madoka and if Kyoko really was in love with Sayaka, and what did he do? He beat around the bush. Naoko Takeuchi and Kunihiko Ikuhara(the latter of whom also worked on Sailor Moon R; woah, what a surprise) both admitted that there was gay love in their stories, yet people act like Madoka is super progressive regarding homosexuality when it's just implied and those shows were MUCH more open! Doesn't stop people from claiming the show is "honorary yuri" and saying that the meaning of "yuri" should be broadened to include any close bonds between two female characters, whether or not it's actually romantic, AND favoring the show(and HomuMado) above actual yuri shows that are made to appeal to women. If all this were actually valid, Sailor Moon would be yuri as hell.

I hate seeing people fap over this show and act like it's so revolutionary for recycling things that the genre was ALREADY DOING, because I know full well that the ONLY reason it gets this wide acclaim is because Magical Girl shows have traditionally been written for women and this show is aimed at men. That's literally it. Because nothing a woman writes is good enough, especially when it dares to go against patriarchal constructs of femininity as weak and docile by portraying it as cool and awesome. It doesn't matter how cool and dark and diverse and inclusive and complex Sailor Moon and Precure and Princess Tutu and Utena are, they're written by/for women with the intention of empowering them so they're automatically invalid, cheap, happy-go-lucky crap where nothing bad ever happens and anything those shows try to do ought to be discredited because they don't appeal to men like they should so what's the point?

But the second a MAN comes in and intrudes on a female-dominated space by doing all of those things but with a very shallow understanding of how they ought to be executed, people are all over it because a MAN did it and now it's interesting and respectable! I have seen so many people say that they don't like Magical Girl because it's girly and shallow and stupid, but then they praise Madoka for things that the girly and "shallow" shows have already done! Men are always taking away things meant for women and distorting it to fit their patriarchal views and yet when they do it it's somehow better and anyone who complains is simply a whiny straw feminist!

The fandom does it all the time, someone complains about the show and why they don't like it and find it sexist, and the response is always "you're just not smart enough to understand it; you have no idea what you just watched". Because obviously since it's made by a man it's sooo much smarter then the traditional sappy stuff made by women. That's why it's so annoying when others praise it at the expense of other works in the genre: they know their reasons for liking it are, more often than not, rooted in sexism against female-aimed and female-empowering works, so the only way they can praise it is at the expense of said works, hence them being just like girls who claim they're "not like other girls" when there's nothing wrong with girls being feminine and in fact many of those girls may like the same things you do!

So while I'm not saying there's anything inherently WRONG with liking Madoka, I DO have a problem with people who act like it's better or more serious than other shows in the genre and simply discard them on the grounds that they're "for girls", since they obviously didn't watch them.

But no, all of that gets thrown out the window because they dare to be "feminine" while doing all of that stuff and the Japanese are forcing their girls to be girly through Magical Girl propaganda. And I just HATE when people act like anything feminine must be societally forced onto girls, rather than girls just happening to like them. In addition, stating that they are simply reinforcing gender roles by being feminine is such bullshit because the whole purpose isn't about conforming to patriarchal femininity, it's about reclaiming femininity.

Too often, femininity is associated with being weak, powerless, helpless, submissive, docile, vapid, catty, bitchy, petty, vain, stupid, the list goes on. Magical Girl saves femininity from a bad reputation. It shows femininity in a new light, as something strong and powerful and, hell, even admirable! It's about telling girls "Hey, you can be strong and powerful and smart, but you don't have to be a tomboy or act like a man to do so". Girls are always told they have to act masculine to be taken seriously because the only way to be respected is to be like a man, which is an indirect way of saying that only men deserve respect.

Magical Girl does away with all that in favor of showing the feminine as something innately powerful, and yet naysayers MISS the point and say that it's just stereotyping girls instead. To see people claim that Magical Girl forces girls to fit a feminine ideal to be respected is just disappointing. It's supposed to be a female power fantasy for young girls that shows them as the ones being powerful and empowering each other.

Take how in Sailor Moon the heroine often says something along the lines of "I won't let you take advantage of girls", which Wedding Peach went on to imitate. The purpose of the genre is for girls. To empower girls. So why on earth would they show them fitting into a "male" mould of power? Do these people think that any time women are shown acting distinct from men that they are doing something wrong?

And the hypocritical part is that nobody pisses on male-oriented anime for reinforcing a harmful narrative to boys that they have to be masculine to be valued and respected. Of course they don't! Because being "masculine" is never seen as a bad thing to be. It's assumed that masculinity is always strong and good and awesome and there's nothing wrong with boys being forced to be masculine because you're supposed to want to be masculine. You're not supposed to want to be feminine.

So of course people will shit all over Magical Girl for embracing, empowering, and reclaiming femininity, because it's not supposed to be that way! You're not supposed to be feminine and also be strong. You're supposed to deny your identity as a woman and assimilate into the boys' club because only boy things are worthwhile! And they cover it up by saying that Magical Girl forces girls to be feminine, when in actuality the WORLD forces girls to be MASCULINE. Magical Girl doesn't force girls to be feminine, It ALLOWS them to. Do you see the difference there?

Another thing I'd like to bring to the table is that the claim is racist and here's why: The claim that "Magical Girl shows are seen as feminist in the US for portraying femininity as a source of strength but not in Japan because it's telling girls they have to be feminine"...what does that mean? Japanese people can't be feminist? All Japanese people are sexists and think girls have to fit in a certain role? Do Japanese feminists HAVE to be anti-femininity? Are there literally no Japanese people who think you can be feminine AND strong(who also obviously identify as feminists?) Because it seems hella sexist to insinuate that Magical Girl shows are sexist because they're made in Japan and they don't believe you can be feminine AND strong there.

While there is some credibility to it since Japan IS, by and large, much more strict with gender roles, hasn't it ever occurred to these people that these types of shows exist to counter that belief? Not only that, but it implies that people aren't allowed to have opinions on works that aren't made in their culture, and that anyone who sees those shows as feminist are just projecting their Western beliefs onto an Eastern work. And even worse, when people say that, they don't have the same opinion of Western Magical Girl works.

Just look at LoliRock, Miraculous Ladybug, Winx, W.I.T.C.H., Star vs the Forces of Evil, and countless other European/Western Magical Girl works. Where are the people saying "They get their power from femininity and that is sexist!"? Nowhere! They're silent! Even though those are very much like Magical Girl works from Japan(although I don't think the genre originated from there), while still being original.

It's because people think that any media exported from Japan is automatically sexist and demeaning and so anything they create, no matter how empowering their intentions, gets twisted into something that's somehow toxic or unsafe for girls to watch. But when Europeans do the exact same thing nobody complains. Because Japan is not allowed to do anything empowering whatsoever; something's always wrong with it, apparently.

So that's why I have a problem with people who say those things; it's so problematic because they think they're being all open-minded and aware/respectful of other people's cultures, but all they're doing is reinforcing negative stereotypes further. It's kinda like what I said earlier(in another ask) about how people love to praise Madoka Magica for being a unique, dark, and interesting take on the genre when all it did was rehash elements of the genre that already existed, strip away the female empowerment, and gear it towards grown men, which is why people like it more. How about instead of speaking for Japanese people you let them speak for themselves?!

I would also like to add that there’s even a limit to women acting masculine because that’s still “not enough” for those kinda of men who would promote those beliefs. Women need to act more masculine to “be taken seriously” but then you have men who’ll tell them to “dress less” or whatever.

I think what it comes down to is that they want women to not be “emotionally taxing” with all those dAmN eMoTioNs of theirs (unless it’s for the sake of their angsty magical girl anime where the girls suffer for having emotions), but they also need to look pretty and be sexualized.

We can’t win.

One Trainer’s Trash is Another Pokemon's Family

So if you didn't know, i ended up taking a hiates from writing ANYTHING for a bit, but I was just sitting around earlier and thought "huh, there was that oneshot I kinda wanted to write" and BOOM im formating this at 2am when I finished writing so I can just post this in the morning.

Also note me writing this does not mean I'm fully back to writing because I tbh have no clue when I'll be back in full writing mode, a lot of stuff is going on irl around health issues (I'm good dont worry, just trying to figure out this issue so we can fix it) and my mind hasn't been able to put words together into written sentences well recently for anything, so exspect everything and nothing!!

A chance encounter is about to change three lives forever

“Slow down!” the Eevee hissed to his companion, running through the crowd of humans to catch up. His green and brown eyes swept the crowd, making sure no one grew suspicious and followed the two Eevees, sighing as he thankfully saw everyone's gaze sweep past them, uninterested.

There had been a few incidences when a trainer or a ‘nurse’ had tried to catch them, whether for his strange fur markings, trying to get his friend’s fur cleaned (no one held him for long once that information was leaked), or purely for them being Eevees. He’d heard it all, common lines being “hey are you lost?”, “where is your trainer?”, “is that a wild Eevee?” and of course, the most common

“I’ve got to catch it!”

Heh, no one had succeeded yet, and he didn’t plan that to change any time soon. Or ever.

“Not sorry” the simple line snapped him out of his thoughts as he looked over to the grinning Eevee that probably did need a bath “but I heard yelling in the back alley of the Good Place, and I just have to see if it's new!” The ‘Good Place’ was a restaurant the two constantly saw in their travels from town to town. While they couldn’t read the written name, and wouldn’t dare get close enough to a human to simply know the name when it had no use to them, it always had an identical symbol at every location. It was his trash loving companions (and though he would never admit it, his own as well) favorite location to get food.

“Very well, lead the way” with a flick of their tails, they rounded the last few corners to the back alley where two large dumpsters lay. As a Trubbish scurred off at the sight of them they both leapt up, balancing as they opened one off the lids.

He sat watch as the other squealed and dove in, rummaging through and ripping open plastic bags with sharp teeth. They always had the same parts when working together, he would keep watch making sure no one saw them from the regular path or had any workers walk out the door, while the other would search, eating what he wanted and tossing stuff up to save for later. They had tried to swap jobs once, but it was a mess that nearly got them caught if it wasn’t for his own keen ears, so they kept to their own and worked together.

He glanced at the door, the symbol imprinted on it. Doing this dumpster diving always reminded himself when he was alone. How he’s grateful to have a friend. Actually, doing it at the Good Place always reminded himself when he met the trashy Eevee. It was just after-

A paw swatted at his face, causing him to dodge. He seemed to be falling into nastolga easily today, he thought shaking it out of his fur.

“Did you hear me? I said all these bags have already been looked through” the other huffed “they must have used the other one, which is weird because they usually use the one closer to the door first….” he frowned, confused before brightening “anyways can you help me open the other lid?”

The clean Eevee nodded, hopping across to the other dumpster.

Sta- he shivered, the angry yells still echoing in his ears. She was so mad when she discovered there was no dragon evolution, when she finally discovered he was completely useless. He glanced at the snapped pokeball at his paws, fallen through a space between a few garbage bags.

 

He knew he had to get out of here, but what was the point? He was with a trainer up till now, and while she was horrible he was still at least alive. But to try and survive on his own? No, he might as well just curl up on this garbage, might as well just

A scene flash in his mind, of a Pecha bush laying under a sprawling indigo sky. Two other faces similar yet different then his, laughing, smiling.

 

He couldn't give up, not yet, not until he could find them again.

 

Chatter and a crash of heavy plastic hitting a wall distracted him from the thoughts racing through his head. He pressed low against the bags, ears flat as he waited. Were there people taking trash out? No.. that didn't sound human, that sounded

 

The lid thunked twice, before late afternoon light poured down onto his dark brown fur. He froze as another pokemon fell down in front of him, another Eevee.

 

He was bigger, though everyone was bigger. His fur seemed to be a normal shade of brown, yet it was hard to tell with all the dirt and dust coating it. He looked up into the newcomer's eyes, surprise and delight filled them to the brim.

 

"Oh? OH!" The other gasped for only a moment before flashing forwards, grabbing him lightly by his scruff and before he knew it St- he was in open air and sat on the hard plastic lid.

 

"Hey hey!" The Eevee scrambled across to another Eevee, his turned back to the both of them. The third Eevee's ear twitched to show they were listening, watching the humans walk by.

 

"I found a child in the trash!" Trash Eevee declared happily. The Eevee on watch somehow looked skeptical from behind, but curiosity got them to turn around.

"Hmm" seemingly gaining his composure, the one on watch came over to inspect him further, sniffing curiously at his fur "I don't think so, he smells too much of humans" the trash Eevee visibly shrunk.

"No!" He cried, snapping his jaw closed at the sudden speaking "I, I me- mean no, I had a trainer, but I don't have one anymore" he attempted to explain, hissing at himself for stuttering.

 

"I uh" he coughed, attempting to clear his throat, "I, I'm sorry for disturbing your search" he flicked his tail toward the two before curling it around himself, finally looking into the others faces. It was at the moment he noticed the strange markings around the single green eye on the watcher.

 

"It's no problem," the calmer one replied. He looked as if he were about to continue, before the trash Eevee popped "hey, have you gotten food today?"

 

He blinked, thinking about all that happened since dawn. Dawn, when his trai- ex-trainer had learned the news.

 

"I.. haven't?" He tried, not wanting to test his luck. They were strangers, he had to be cautious.

 

"Here!" The other dove back into the trash. He leaned over frantically, thankful to see the pokeball halfs had sunken out of sight. If they ever asked why he was in there, he would just tell them he was looking for food.

No one would find out the true reason. Well.. maybe two others, but that would have to wait till he found them again. He would find them again.

 

The walking trash pile hopped back up, dropping what seemed to be a freshly thrown away berry skewer at his feet.

 

He looked up, alarmed "no, I couldn't-" "oh don't worry" the other's purr sounded like a motorcycle "we'll survive without a few berries."

 

While he was still uncertain, his stomach grumbled with hunger so he bent down and took a bite of closest fully intact berry. When the sweet familiar taste hit his mouth, he barely stopped the tears. Arceus really had to do that, didn't they.

 

"Everything ok?" He looked up from the Pecha berry, the special marked Eevee looking at his watery eyes with concern.

 

"Y-yes, just haven't eaten anything this sweet in a while" he lied quickly, finishing what he could before pushing towards the others "here, might as well not let this go to waste" he smiled.

 

The marked Eevee hummed before taking a bite from a nearby Oran berry.

 

After a bit, the dirty Eevee spoke a question he knew was coming "so, you said you had a trainer, do you have a name?"

 

He paused, thinking, before shaking his head "she never gave me one."

 

The others nodded in understanding. He looked out at the people walking in the street, passing by with no clue of the trio sitting on the dumpsters.

 

He didn’t have a name, not to them at least. To them, he would be the Eevee that they found, the Eevee they took in, the Eevee one day they would realize they see as a brother, the Eevee that would inevitably disappear in the back of a truck

One day there would be another family, they would know him as Virgil, Virgil who they found in the forest, Virgil who followed them everywhere, Virgil who got caught finally by his own free will

But no one would know him as Star but his original family. No one would know him as Star, the being who hatched into the world with an angry scream that was not his own, Star, the one who fell in love with the sky on his first night of his existence, Star, the one who found family and then was ripped away from it in his sleep

Star, who would keep searching till the ends of the Earth to find his family.

 

But for now, he was just a strange looking Eevee in a strange situation, hiding his name from everything and everyone, and that was ok.

 

He glared at the crowd of humans walking by peacefully. There was only one thing left from his life with.. with the Dragon, one thing he would keep

He would never trust another human again.
