ugh okay I think I'm FINALLY done with my bittersweet art for the contest!!!

only took me....nineteen and a half hours.....my right arm is sore....owie....

anyway, I'll look at it again in the morning (when I'm less sleepy) to see if I catch anything that needs to be fixed, but hopefully tomorrow it will be posted!!

Been collecting these like Pokemon

I recently watched some TV and happened on Amazon's Fallout tv show -

I never played the games but I think ultimately it didn't matter that much since the series is pretty self-explanatory, but what I really liked is how the heroine, despite being backstabbed, betrayed and insulted for like, the majority of her time "outside" in the post apocalyptic world where people excuse this sort of behaviour as "doing whatever it takes to survive", she still remains the kind of person who upholds, whenever she can, the values from her sheltered life (lol) in a peaceful community of mutual aid and refuses - unless necessary - to behave like the people who mistreated her.

There's a scene where someone, who used her as a bait to lure a giant mutated fish, forced her to drink radioactive water and I think it's implied had her indulge in cannibalism, sells her to people who traffic human organs in exchange for some medicine - the heroine survives but when she sees her former captor on the ground, on death's door because of the lack of medicine, she still gives him some, because she still believe in the rule she was taught, to not inflict on someone the things you wouldn't want to be inflicted on yourself.

And I liked how this positive/naive way - at odds with the general atmosphere from this "post nuclear world" - is portrayed with shady group of people whom you are led to believe engage in human experimentations and want to keep a secret at all costs... but when the heroine discovers this secret and is found out, the shady group of people, far from executing her... just throw her out of their community, and give her food/drinks to survive outside.

Ultimately, when she meets the person who is the reason why she had to live her "shelter/vault" and venture outside, because that person kidnapped her father and killed people living in her vault - instead of killing her or planting a bomb in the, uh, thing she was supposed to exchange for her father, again, asks her to please return her dad in exchange for the "thing she brought".

Of course plot happens - but where I expected some "I had some life experiences and now I'm #badass and #jaded and #sweareverytenwordstoshowhowbadassibecame", I was pleasantly surprised when it wasn't the case.

Maybe it's just the first season and it'll change later on.

And I compared this to the few episodes of some random indian tv show where we follow two policemen dealing with terrorists setting bombs -

In true "early 2000" shows, the officers don't hesitate to, uh, break the protocol and use force to interrogate people - to the point of, when they have to interrogate a grandpa suspected of money laundering, they pick his grandson at school and bring him to the warehouse where grandpa is being interrogated, which makes grandpa talk, of course because the policemen brought grandson as a thinly veiled threat... - and I thought we were back in the era of "gritty" antiheroes who do "bad stuff" but for the "greater good" so they get a pass -

I still don't know if the writers intended to convey this message, but karma striked back when, one of the policeman has to corner a terrorist who, in turn, uses a kid as a hostage.

Of course, being a "nice" person, he puts the kid's safety above his own, much like the grandpa who talked to protect his grandkid, and the terrorist got what he wanted - the policeman was killed, much like the policeman got his intel after threatening grandpa - and didn't kill the kid afterwards.

If you use a kid as a hostage, what makes you think the same thing can't happen to you?

Coupled with the fact that his operation to arrest/corner the terrorists was mounted "outside" of the proper regulations and organisations, because they wanted to strike fast - meant they had no backup and ultimately ended up in a mess, with the death of one of the two policemen and the terrorist escaping - and this is a valid point that is, well, brought out by the female lead to which the surviving policeman has nothing to reply, because she's right.

(I keep my expectations low for the next episodes because of experience)

Anyways, watching those two series really lampshaded that I'm too old for the #dark and #gritty and #realism, and I'm maybe not the only one.

Being kind/nice hero is always harder than becoming dark/jaded antihero, but hey, at the end of the day, if you complain about murdered babies when you already murdered some, are you fighting for the "greater good" or are you just a hypocrite?

Some stars are teal and the color I associate with source finns portals

Alphonse is willing to give but Seth is hesitant to take, hence Seth's more angular appearance

The star in the middle dosen't just represent sugarboo but also a life in which Seth and Alphonse are not surrounded by the hate and despair they thought they deserved previously.

OK, I'm having so many ideas of AU in the Professor Layton universe! 👀

So may I present you the

Layton!Casino AU

(not a very good name but I couldn't think of something else °^°)

So, the basic idea is as follows :

- The divergence starts after Claire's death and Hershel's assault

- Bill Hawks managed to get Gressenheller University to withdraw Hershel's professorship, so that immediately after all the shit a the last three months, he suddenly found himself unemployed

- He's also regularly threatened / followed in his every day life, making going outside a very taxing experience

- there's also regular vandalism of his material goods and such, as well as rumours spread about him

- it reaches such a point that Hershel is forced to leave London behind in hope of escaping Bill's manigance behind (the man's plan being for him to get as far away from him/any sorts of clues about the incident)

- Not wanting to pit more pressure on his parents (that were also being threatened on a smaller scale to push him to his mental limits) he decided to try his luck in Monte d'Or

- At that point, the reputation of the 'city of miracles' has started to spread, and truly, Hershel needs one at that moment.

- He's not expecting to reunite with Henry or Angela. After all, when they had parted ways ten years ago, they blamed him for Randall's death + thought of him a coward for running away instead of trying to look for him

- They're the ones who seek him out when they caught the word of him being there + the rumours slowly arriving from London about him.

- There's like... A huge discussion/confrontation/arguing/crying mess that happen

- At the end, they reconnect as friends. Hershel explains to them the whole deal with Claire and Bill, and the two go on their plan of waiting for Randall together (Angela/Randall/Henry because we need more polycule)

- Hershel ends up working for the Ledore, and eventually got to the point of being at the head of one the city casino

- He uses it, with the Ledore's blessing, as a way to uncover shady/illegal businesses by luring "bad" people in, extracting information and some other not quite legal means... But with the end goal of handing them to the cops

(it's Hershel's way of fighting corruption after being victim of such scheming)

- At some point, he ends up taking custody of one Flora Reinholds when she's 6 y/o

- Her father was forced to find her a new guardian as he finds himself in a precarious situation a few months after his wife's death.

- He gifted Flora with a golden apple necklace before leaving her into Hershel's hands (for the latter proved himself to be great help and trustworthy... Even tough he was unable to prevent the Baron inevitable end...)

- Hershel here truly act as a new father figure to the girl, helped by Henry and Angela, as well with Alphonse, with who he eventually reconnects

- He never pressured her into considering him as a father if she doesn't want to. She started to call him dad a little while before her 9th birthday

And... Oh dear... Is that some plot being brewed here? 👀

some of my Fullmetal alchemist headcanons: Elric Brothers edition

Edward experienced favoritism in his childhood, he was often met with the lines that he is the older brother and wasn't allowed to act in the same way Alphonse did. Which led him to act out most of the time.

Trisha’s main caregiver was Edward, since the Rockbells couldn't help her full time and Hoho wasn't there. Edward learned everything that his mother did in order to run the house while she was bonded to the bed.

Ed blames himself for Trisha’s death because he fell ill with a cold two weeks before her death. She pushed herself to take care of him and that made her body weaker which lead her to pass away.

Because of that Alphonse when he gets angry, he screams that their mom’s death wasn't their father’s fault but Ed’s

Yuri Rockbell was the closest one to the boys after their mother’s death, he took it upon himself to make sure that they were taken care of and had enough money and all their living needs, he also made sure to spend time with them every day.

After Yuri’s death, Edward and Alphonse were alone, they didn't have enough money to pay for bills and electricity or buy food which lead them to steal sometimes.

When they got caught, Edward will always take the blame, which left the whole village to say that Edward was a brat and a bad boy while Alphonse was the total opposite.

When families from cities come to look for orphans to adopt, and they visit Resembool where all the orphans will line up hoping that they get adopted- the Elric brothers were never wanted- sometimes families choose Al who refuses to go without his brother.

Edward and Al, although close to their granny, she abused them mentally, and sometimes on occasion, physically. They didn't know that was abuse until after they started to work under Mustang.

Alphonse finished only 3ed grade ( while Ed first grade since he dropped out to help his mom.) before they went to study under Izumi for a year before they were kicked out from her home and they made their way back to Resembool.

They tried to bring their mom at ages 10 and 9 ( instead of 10 and 11.) and of course that failed. They ended up living with the Rockbells for 6 months before Major Mustang found them.

Edward joined the military before he turned 12. He was 11 and some and his first birthday after he joined was the 12th.

Both brothers idolized the Colonel, subconsciously or consciously. Since he was their legal guardian, Edward’s commander and the adult who was stable in their life, it just seemed to fit.

Edward is short because as a child he didn't get to eat well, therefor his body did not grow well- unlike Al who ate his meal and Ed’s ( Ed used to give him his meals because let's face it, Ed is dumb like that.) he dislikes being called “ small.” because his mom used to nickname him her small man. So when people make fun of his height, they make fun of his mother’s nickname.

Edward’s harsh, angry, loud and impolite personality comes from two points, the first being not having guides growing up. Maybe Al is considered more polite but really, Ed raised Al while raising himself. Al is just sweeter and is shy and he doesn't put the angry mask on like Ed. And the only reason Ed does have it on is to protect himself and his little brother.

Al calling Ed “ big brother.” or “ brother” more than by his first name because Al sees Ed as an adult if that makes sense? Those names are titles, just like when he called Trisha “mom” that is her title. Ed’s title is “ brother.” because Al can't call him mom or dad so he just sticks to their relation.

Ed’s red jacket was inspired by the colonel’s black one. We see Ed coming to the state exam and receiving his watch while he wears all black- I bet He saw Colonel looking cool with the black coat and since he doesn't want anyone to think he is copying his CO, he went with the red jacket instead.

At the start of his millitry career, Ed refused to sleep and eat to the point he developed disorders. He genuinely thought he deserved to live the same way Al was living- Thankfully he had the whole team Mustang catching him and helping him get better and receive help.

Speaking of team Mustang, they are all just a family to each other, and that includes the Elrics! The boys viewed the men ( Jean, Haymans, Vato, and Maes.) as their uncles, since they acted like ones and it just felt right thinking about them as If they were uncles. Kain being younger and closer to their age, Ed and Al saw an older brother in him. Riza took a longer time for them to see her role in their life, before it dawned on them after a couple of years how much motherly she is towards them, it wasn't the same way as Trisha or Izumi, but Riza was their mom too. As for Roy he was the father they needed but had the hardest time admitting that since the word “ Father and Dad” meant HoHo. Eventually tho, both brothers found happiness in these titles.

Ed’s foodie personality continued even after the promised day. Starving for days as a child made His body always wanting to eat more than a normal person's because it is scared it will go through starvation again.

Sure Ed and Al are close but you bet they still fight like normal siblings on normal things- like who get to sit in the shotgun seat or the upper bunk in the bed or gets to do that one chore.

Ed grew his hair as a promise to Al. He burned the house as a promise as well. The house one so he won't quit and go home and the hair as a reminder, he will not cut it until Al can cut his hair too. So that day when Al got his hair cut after PD, and Edward got one too.

Ed and Al went back to Resembool. They both took a year break before Ed joined the military again as a research state alchemist after Roy was able to pull a few strings, that way Ed could research alchemy and get well paid in order to get Al into a university.

When Roy knew that was Ed’s goal, he surprised him with the fact that he will pay for both of their educations. Saying that “ both of my kids deserve the best education. You did plenty for your bother, let me now carry that burden.”

Alphonse stuided Biochemistry and then traveled to Xing, to learn Alkheasty.

Edward studied physics and engineering ( double majoring!!) he started playing with the idea If humans could fly using vechails ( I like to think he started sketching airplane.) After he finished his studies and traveled around for few months, he proposed to Winry.

Alphonse and Mai decided that they will play as the aunt and uncle in the family as they weren't ready to be parents yet with their lifestyles.

Edward and Winry had 6 kids and Ed was a stay at home dad while Win countined her ever-growing business.

Roy adopted the Elrics, but no one really mentions that. It was after the PD, as a promise that he will still take care of them and look after them even when they left the army, and that they will always have a place with him- all the good parental things.

Ed’s kids are named after important people or things in life. Like his oldest, a boy is named Yuri Roy Elric, honoring both of Win and Ed’s dads. And so on with the rest of their children.

Alphonse gave his gate to Ed as a birthday gift, since he stopped using it and just saw it a fitting after everything Ed did to him.

Edward when he shared that with Roy and how he has his alchemy back, he became a soilder again, “ Colonel Elric.” and became Roy’s bodyguard ( since Hawkeye and him got married.) and Roy’s secret weapon. No one knowss that Ed has his alchemy again so he always took his enemies by shock.

Alphonse lives in Xing and is a honorable member of the royal family.

Ed opened the gate and exchanged his automail leg with his arm. It was painful getting a new port, but for his new bodyguard gig, it seemed like the best choice, since his arm is his weapon.

Okay, I feel like this is a weird question, but I have thought of this every now and then, and can't really decide on an answer of my own, so, do you think there's a reason Victor goes through his marriage to Elizabeth?

Like, I always kinda imagined that Elizabeth blamed herself for Caroline's death, and then for feels like she owns it to Caroline to honor her deathbed wish (on top of that she's a woman in the 1700s, so she probably doesn't get a lot of say in who she will marry) and that's why she's does it, even if she's not, understandably, into it

For Victor tho, I feel like can't really get behind the thought process, like he's given a few outs from it by both his dad and Elizabeth and I can understand that at that point it's a little too late and he is kinda looking at the marriage as a form of suicide.

But the Frankenstein parents did seem to plan the wedding form, pretty much day one. Did the change for Victor to object just never come up?  🤔

Am I thinking of this small, probably not that important detail, too deeply? Probably.

Either way, poor dear Elizabeth, you deserved so much better 😢

Victor gives every indication that he really doesn't want to marry Elizabeth but he's also bound by the expectations of his time period and it was his mother's dying wish that he and Elizabeth would marry. So not only does he feel obligated to go through with it, he feels obligated to behave as though this is something he wants and is happy to do. Alphonse also has some pretty rigid expectations of his children. To be honest, Victor paints a very idealistic picture of his relationship with his parents but if you read between the lines he comes off like an unreliable narrator. It's a personal interpretation but I feel like there's a lot of unspoken resentment towards Victor's parents but he isn't about to bad mouth them or express his discontent over the situation to Walton as he tells his story. I think that's important to keep in mind, that we're not looking at this story from an objective perspective, we're hearing Victor tell it to someone else and of course Victor is going to have his biases about his family and the creature. I'm not saying he's lying about events by any means, but when he talks about his mother and her wishes for him and Elizabeth I wonder if he actually believes this was a good thing or is just afraid to admit it's horrifying because he either doesn't want to think badly of Caroline or doesn't want Walton to think poorly of her. The nightmare he has about trying to kiss Elizabeth and her turning into his mother's rotting corpse is very very telling about how not ok he is about the whole ordeal. All said and done Victor is not a well man. He went low contact with his family for months and built an 8 foot tall homunculus in his dorm. That's not indicative of a great home life. I think it's also fair to note that Elizabeth asks if he's found someone else at one point and is extremely ok with it. Like "I completely understand if you found someone else! I won't be mad at all!" Almost like she half hopes he did. But Victor is not about to go against his dead mom's wishes so of course he hadn't.

I really like listening to her, she's very beautiful and her voice is very pleasant!! Well, sometimes the stories that Miss Killer tells me I already know, but it doesn't matter! I will listen to her forever

How long was I lost to time 

again? 

I thought I smelled her on the sheets. It’s all my own sweat and burnt hair now, cloying.  

I can't do this again. 

I can't. I can't. I can't. Hylia please. Please, Hylia. 

I fall asleep praying to a void. 

I am an orphan of time but worse, still. At least I could not miss what I had never known, before. 

But there is no scar as painful as the memory of her touch. Her fingers flayed me open to the world and I am raw. 

I am raw. 

I beg for the wound to close but it will not. Our love was not a spar or papercut it was torture in reverse, bliss so sharp I recognized its end in the very moment. 

In every moment. 

I existed in every moment 

with her. 

Wherever she is now, she has the truest part of me. I am the husk of memories, faded 

and begging to fade further still. 

But the memories are my only guide. There are no sacred whispers now. 

She had awakened me once, her voice commanding the voice of the goddess into my broken mind.

FMA Brotherhood Tickle Headcanons :D

Edward: SHORT KING! (Shh, don’t let him hear you call him that) We love! We adore- is it weird I always assumed he was canonically ticklish? Maybe it was all the fics I read growing up about him- ANYWAY! This man is a walking tickle spot. No matter where you touch him, do it lightly and he’s weakened. And he is ANGRY about it! He’s the king of those “Ehehehe-STAP! >:O” kind of giggles! He gets so grumpy about it you’d think he was being serious, but then if you don’t play with him he’s all pouty (Not that he’d ever admit it). If I had to give him a specific tickle spot I’d say his belly- again, blaming all the fics and art I consumed growing up, that was a common spot- but also he just radiates being ticklish there? Like I said though, he’s a walking tickle spot so go nuts! Just..be prepared. As a ler-he is ruthless. The kind that can push past his own ticklishness to get you good!

Alphonse: My baby! The “Big little brother”! Canonically ticklish (Finally remembered that scene it only took 15 years what-) it’s been SO LONG since someone tickled him? Kind of hard to do so when you’re a suit of armor, admittedly. When he had a body, he was the go-to target for Ed and Winry whenever they hung out. He’s got the CUTEST laugh! It’s bubbly and giggly and endearing to listen to; the kind if Ed heard it again he’d likely tear up because it’s so nostalgic and happy sounding! As a ler, Al is so GENTLE. Hands made of metal, but the most feathery of touch- he mainly pokes and prods at Edward whenever his brother is #stressed (which is admittedly often). Sometimes he’ll poke at Winry whenever she’s about to lose her mind over her workbench. His worst spots were his ribs and belly!

Winry: I had such a crush on her growing up-RIGHT WINRY! Queen- we love our lady mechanics! I’d say she’s just as ticklish as Edward, but just in different spots! Her armpits are really bad- sometimes her hair will get stuck there and she’ll squeal and twist around to throw her  wrench at whomever tickled her. Admittedly Ed likes to sneak up on her and tickle her before running for the hills, so she’s got a 50% hit rate. (No Edwards were harmed in the throwing of her wrenches). Her hips are also ticklish, though you have to use those deep tissue methods if you want to tickle her there. Her laugh is really pretty and fun, the kind that makes Ed-you stop and linger for a while, you know? Like Al, it’s nostalgic and heartwarming! As a ler, she’s dangerous! She knows ALL of Edward’s spots (as his go-to mechanic and childhood friend, naturally) and has a knack for finding them on others! She’s got those metal detector hands!

Roy: Mm, mm, mm- how I love me some Roy Mustang! This man- this MAN, he is the type to be all bravo. “Me? Ticklish? HA! As if I’d be taken down by something so childish!” And then- like immediately gets taken down by something so childish. He’s not nearly as ticklish as Edward or Winry, but like…he’s got no defenses. Especially when Hawkeye tickles him, he’s gone. Dead. Deceased. Sing his praises at his funeral, he is not coming back! His legs are by far his worst spot- squeeze his knees, pinch his thighs, run your fingers along his calves- gone. Thanos snapped. He’s got a hearty laugh- loud and boisterous (kinda sexy) and addicting as hell! He’s not much of a ler himself (cause he can literally be destroyed in five seconds flat) but when he does get the chance, he’s actually rather good at it! Arrogant in his teasing, sure, but very mindful of his lee’s reaction and what’s okay/what’s not. (Also big on aftercare- he’ll get you whatever you want and need). Can you tell I love him???

Hawkeye: I still have a crush on Hawkeye-EHEM! Right- our angel. Our goddess. Our badass queen. Don’t let that quiet, composed personality fool you- this woman is DEADLY on all fronts; including tickling. By far the one who tickles Roy the most when they’re alone, she has that man pinned and screaming for mercy everytime. She’s meticulous-drawing out every last breath of laughter until she’s satisfied (or until her lee calls it quits, whichever comes first). She herself is ticklish, but it depends on who’s tickling her whether or not she’ll give you a laugh. Most people will get a dry, sarcastic “ha ha.” Before she glares at them till they wither. If it’s Roy or someone she loves, you’ll be charmed by her soft breathless giggles and gorgeous smile that can kill a lesser man. She’s just so- AHH!

Envy: (I’m going in cause I know you love them) Does one’s tickle spot change depending on the form you take? And does that even apply to someone like Envy when their entire being is One. Big. Tickle spot? Scientists have yet to find the answer, but I can say with full confidence that Envy CANNOT handle being tickled under any capacity! One touch is all they need before they’re spazzing out like a bug and chewing out whoever dares to tickle them up down left right all the way to hell and back- all while laughing like a hyena and not fighting back cause they actually LIKE it???

Their preferred tickle spot changes on the day to day. Sometimes they crave belly tickles, others good ol’ neck tickles. Sometimes they want to get ribbed, but I’d say their thighs are consistently favored. Accidental brushing against them will get Envy giggling, but be very, VERY careful. They take any and all tickles as a challenge and will immediately seek revenge, even if it was a genuine accident. Did I mention they like tickles? More on the receiving side, sure, but they get SUCH a power rush when they can take someone down as a ler! Can tease with the best of them, but can’t handle teases in return- the enigma of Envy!

Oh also they get jealous if they witness tickle fights and don't get tickled too. Super pouty but also quick to cheer up when they finally get tickled back <3

nah nah i gotcha- ed gives MAJOR canonically ticklish vibes, all of the scenes of winry fixing his arm alone like come on 😭 i agree, he'd pretend to get so mad about it too, he would never admit that getting tickled actually reminds him of some of his happiest childhood memories. and i looove his stomach being his death spot, i gotta throw in his underarm tho; but only on one side, right where the metal meets the skin. that's basically a spot exclusive to winry, but just let her trace it reeeaaal lightly and he'll be giggling and stuttering out cusses while absolutely melting into her they're my babies i'm sorry- 💗💗😭😭 (also yk his ler instincts kick into high gear the second someone dares to utter the l-word, and if only to tell him what a "cute little giggle" that was)

ALPHONSE MY SON i'm ready to cry about him at any given time 😭😭 ed would be so miffed that he can't tickle al back while he's in the armor, but he would totally tell him in great detail how exactly he's going to do it once al gets his body back. like al would tickle ed to calm him down or get him to stop working and then once ed lies down he's like "i can't wait to pin your arm over your head and scribble your armpit with all five fingers at once" and when al's like HUH?? ed would just go "goodnight :)" and zonk off to al's armor clanking as he shakes with fear (but also he's really excited about it okay can you blame him)

METAL DETECTOR HANDS IS PERFECTION STOPPIT 😭💀 winry is definitely the one who starts every single of her and ed's tickle fights (because ed is too cool and too adult for this bullshit, obviously.) and they give each other NOTHING, it's always an all out war with them and sometimes al even has to step in and pull them apart by the scruff of their necks like little kitty cats. also the aim of her throwing her wrenches gets better the more deadly the tickle attack, as crazy as it sounds, so if ed wants to get her really good chances are he's absolutely gonna end up with a concussion 💀

squiggily i must say you conceal your love for roy mustang so well i really couldn't tell 😌😌 i honestly didn't think he was that attractive until he got turned into a pathetic little guy by some rain and then i was like oh yeah i get it shfgdsxkj- no fr tho he's so cool, his fight scenes go crazy hard if he doesn't get nerfed by the weather and he's such an amazing character too - AND YES mans is weak, that is the face of a man who CANNOT resist when someone so much as grazes against the back of his knee. hawkeye likes casually putting her leg over his lap like a seatbelt and then tickle his legs so all he can do is kinda flop around and grasp onto her arms without actually doing anything to push her off 💗💗 and imagine roy as a ler to ed tho, can you imagine- he'd lecture him about obeying your superiors while poking his stomach urgh he's such a dad 😭😭

riza hawkeye the woman of my dreams 🛐🛐 girl is a mean ler, the eye of a sniper sees all weak points immediately - if her and winry teamed up they'd be unstoppable, everyone fears the day they might get the idea 💀💀 she also sometimes tickles her friends and/or comrades very briefly when she feels like they need to shut up, she'll notice someone nearly dozing off during an assembly and pinch their side before giving them the blank stare of silent judgement which, unsurprisingly, always works. also- "if it's roy or someone she loves" oh that's weird you just said roy twi- *gunshot*

i know the homunculi are technically like. not capable of love or whatever but i like to see them as dysfunctional siblings in my head, just for me to enjoy, personally, and i just. envy was getting the annoying younger sibling treatment i feel it in my soul. lust especially, she loved just pinning them face down, sitting on their thighs and raking her nails up and down their sides and envy's just screaming but also they're having fun psht don't tell anyone- and them being jealous when others get tickled but they don't STOP that's so funny, envy you don't have to live up to the name all the time 😭😭

ANON YOU ARE MY HERO!! You have been warned these are my personal taste opinions and don't necessarily reflect what makes a "good" story

I have two main points that sort of tie into one: I think fma makes more sense as a smaller scale story.

Under the readmore because this got long:

Yes, it’s a shounen of course it eventually has a grand arc with the world at stake. I can’t really blame it for that. But at its core the story is about the Elric brothers’ love for each other, and their loss of innocence as they venture out into the world that's hurt them so. We care about them, about their near impossible struggle to right a mistake and get their lives and bodies back. And we see how cruel and horrible the world can be through the eyes of children. Keeping with mangahood’s hopeful tone we also see how good the world can be, and imo this works best in the smaller interactions ie winry helping to deliver a baby, the hughes’ family’s generosity to the elrics and winry, etc. The jump from a character driven story (Edward wants to save his little brother) to a more shouneny plot driven story (Edward needs to save the world) takes the focus away from a lot of what I find compelling about FMA.

3/4's of the way into mangahood the Elrics are sort of subsumed into the plot at large and the story doesn't come back to them until Al makes his sacrifice. If I'm being honest, the final battle feels a little contrived to center our protagonists when the whole conclusion could've been written with them at the center to start with (that said I LIKE the end of Brotherhood, this is just a personal taste for story structure thing).

Now obligatory 03 ramble, in contrast 03 keeps the Elrics centered throughout. The final battle isn't much of a battle at all. And sure, it isn't as grand. But it feels in keeping with the heart of the story--Dante is going to kill Alphonse so she can live forever. The whole series up until this point is about Ed trying to save Al, it makes SENSE for this to be the conclusion. The brothers' codependent love comes to a forefront with each unwilling to let the other die, even at the cost of his own life. In this way not only do we begin and end with the Elrics, but we've stayed with them the entire time. 03 is a much more character driven personal story and that's where its charm lies.

My second and bigger issue with the structure of mangahood isin the way it uses large-scale tragedy to fuel its plot.

There are better posts than I can make already written about how mangahood centers the feelings of the perpetrators over the victims. What I will say is the fact that the ishbal war started due to an “accidental” hate crime against an ishbalan child by a military officer is a very sensitive topic and hits close to home (I’m American and this is a very, very relevant conflict). It feels a little in poor taste to me to take something so political and so sensitive and go ahaha but you see it was ENVY all along! Arakawa picked a very heavy subject as the backdrop for her story and sort of relegated it to that: a backdrop. What’s presented as a racially motivated genocide actually was just the bad guys being evil. It falls just short of a real, in-depth criticism of the military. Instead we are left with good men and women who were just following orders (which she DOES explore to a good extent and I appreciate how she does not shy away from making it clear what they did was unforgivable). The corrupt military being corrupt because it is the pawn of a big bad inhuman god-wannabe just... falls flat for me.

In 03, the child's murder at the hands of the police is a fabricated story created to "explain" the genocide--instigated by the military without provocation. And this happens because one, powerful human selfishly wanted to extend her own life. This is the story that feels more true to life and dares to really engage with the themes presented instead of writing them off as some plot device. Not to say that 03 didn't have its own problems with its depiction of genocide because. oh boy nazis in shamballa?? HUH!.

Anyways again these are all my opinions. I think FMA has a lot of heart, and it works best on a smaller scale in order to tell a more personal story.

brohood (all versions rlly) Al is an empath. do u think so ?!?! i bet that boy wouldn’t let ed kill a spider (but then again Ed is probably an empath too HELP THOSE BOYS R PRECIOUS)

i feel like al has extremely heightened senses of empathy towards every living being and im not a deep person but i feel he’s very sensitive and he can’t help but take on the emotions and situations of others and his strong desire to help and save everyone and his frustration when he can’t (also im HEAVILY prodjecting rn)

i feel he’s very giving also he’s handsome hehe got me kicking my legs infp to his core he’d probably help the birds that slam beak-first into screen doors or make burials for any roadkill or sm he also probably dissociates a lot from being stuck in that body

im probably gonna regret this when i sleep on it. any headcanons in ur end ?

I do think both he and Ed are quite empathetic ppl! This might not be super correct but I feel like he gets mad almost as much as Edward but it’s sometimes overlooked because it doesn’t show on his face (cus he doesn’t have one) and he doesn’t / can’t express his anger through his body. Alphonse also gets sad quite a bit which I cannot blame him for at all.

This might be a bit of a nerd ramble but emotions themselves are inextricably linked to your body and bodily reactions and imo, if you don’t HAVE a body or have a body that can’t feel properly I think that would definitely effect how you express yourself in the future and your mental state. He’s still obviously emotional but he can’t feel things like your heart beating faster when you’re scared, your body trembling when your furious, the burn in your throat when you’re on the verge of tears and I think that because of that his emotions are definitely dampened in a way that could make him feel like he’s disassociating almost constantly idk. Being able to fully feel your emotions can help you process things eventually too but he doesn’t get that. (This is probably all just rambling but AGH I love talking about him and my thoughts on him)

I’m not sure I have any headcanons really that I can think of, most of them are kind of just me speculating on how the events of the story effected him post promised day and how he would recover. I have little hcs kind of like gender and sexuality headcanons, I do like to think that he becomes pretty good at alkahestry and maybe has a little side job similar to a doctor or vet.

Anyways, this is way too long sorry! 😅
