Duke — Son of the Dark Fairy, Duke doesn't care much for his destiny, choosing to ignore it entirely as he much prefers to use his talents for entertainment.

Pluto — Son of the Chesire Cat, Pluto often finds himself falling into the background and going unnoticed. That is, until his roommate casts him aside and he stumbles upon a place he can finally be himself without worry; his home with the Rebels.

Eulalie — Daughter of the Mad Hatter, Eulalie is often looked down upon and treated as if she were a child simply because of her unique understanding of the world. She hopes that her new friends, the Rebels, will be able to understand her better.

Berenice — Daughter of Little Red Riding Hood, Berenice would consider herself to be pretty outspoken, refusing to let anyones status get in the way of what they deserve to hear. ((i wasn't going to add notes here, i feel like it kills the immersion, BUT I GENUINELY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO WRITE FOR HER INTRO. i feel like i know nothing about her jfshjf))

Morella — Daughter of Goldilocks, Morella is often pulled between groups. Shes incredibily loyal to all of her friends, but her not-quite-royal not-quite-rebel lineage leads her to questioning with who she truly belongs.

Annabel Lee — Daughter of Snow White, Annabel Lee, being the future queen means that eyes are always on her, and so she must constantly maintain her perfect porcelain persona. Its for this reason that she finds herself naturally adopting the role of leader for the Royals.

Prospero — Son of Prince Charming, Prospero is the most eligible bachelor in all of Ever After Academy-- much to his chagrin. To avoid the unwanted attention without disregarding his destiny, he agrees to a mutually beneficial fake-relationship with his best friend Annabel.

Ada — Daughter of the Swan Queen, Ada is rather discontent with her destiny, desiring to be more like the fairytale pioneers she'd grown up adoring. If there was any way for her to be percieved as more than she is, she'd do it in a heartbeat.

Montresor — Son of the Queen of Hearts, Montresor is not what most would consider a 'typical royal', his callous personality leading many to first believe him to be a rebel. The Wonderland students say he gets it from his mother.

Will — Son of Sleeping Beauty, Will knows he isn't what was intended for his destiny, and if hes being honest with himself, he doesn't even really want it. He'd much prefer to live his own life while one of his many sisters got to follow in their mothers footsteps instead.

gender is a social construct, dont mind the fact everyone but prospero is based on a girl 😭😭there wasnt a whole lot of male characters to pick from, and the ones that were there didn't suit anyone ;p

ALSOO LAST QUICK NOTE! i know that some characters would definetely suit others best (ex. like montresor couldve easily been someone like faybelle or courtly, but i ended up picking lizzie instead), HOWEVER i really wanted their status as a royal/rebel to match the nevermore groups. so the misfits are all rebels, and the posh gang, i forget what they get called lol, are all royals even if logically montresor should be a rebel because he is a horrific human being!! oh and ofc morella is stuck in the middle, being both royal and rebel.

OKAY END OF TANGENT, heres my thought process;

Lenore — Raven Queen; i dont think i need to explain this one, it just felt right. plus she already has tons of raven imagery + even had a pet dragon named nevermore! it was too perfect lol

Duke — Faybelle Thorn; struggled a bit with him, but ended on faybelle since it suits him being a magician. hes definetely not as mean as her unless its warranted, we all know he has a mean streak, cough attempted to murder annabel, cough cough. but yeah, i think the misfit magician/fairy vibe works.

Pluto — Kitty Chesire; between the cat motif, gloomier color pallete, as well as the ability to disappear and go unnoticed, i thought this worked as a nice parallel!

Eulalie — Madeline Hatter; its the weird girl aura to be completely honest lmfao. eulalie definetely isnt as mad as maddie, but you cant tell me they wouldnt be best friends. and the color schemes arent a complete match, but i think maddies colors would look SO good on eula!

Berenice — Cerise Hood; honestly. this was mostly vibes, i think she'd look good with a red cape LOL. but it also works in the sense that shes kind of a tomboyish free spirit. lmk your thoughts on if she should be half wolf like cerise is, because i actually dunno if we should keep that in the au ;p

Morella — Blondie Locks; there were probably hundreds of better choices, but i was stumped. i needed someone that was both a royal and rebel, and the only options i could think of were blondie and poppy. between the two blondie was a better choice, morella doesnt have much of a rapunzel vibe.

Annabel Lee — Apple White; same thing as lenore, do i really gotta explain this one?😭 visually and storywise it just works so perfectly! theyre both the top of their class, both the leader of their respective groups, ANDD they both pretend to be straight. your honor i rest my case

Prospero — Daring Charming; so like. prospero is very much not daring-esque. like at all lmfao. and im aware of that! but it works in the sense that he'd be annabels 'prince' and a lot of people fawn over him (much to his disliking, aroace rep lets gooo).

Ada — Duchess Swan; this was one of the original ideas that sparked this whole au cause WOW THEYRE SIMILAR! both of them desire to be higher class than they really are, and are willing to change the way they behave to reflect that. ada probably wouldnt try to steal destinies in this au, but she definetely would get buddy-buddy with all of the more popular royals (which would be why she falls so hard for prospero)

Montresor — Lizzie Hearts; THIS ONE. THIS WAS TOUGH. im still not 100% sure if this was the right choice, but its a start! basically the thought process was lizzie is a royal who could still be perceived as cruel. add in the mommy issues (this queen of hearts would be a worse parent than lizzies) and firey red color scheme, it felt like the best choice for him. i did consider sparrow hood at one point but lowkey i dont think im ready for that combination LOL. which is fine cause i forgot sparrow was a rebel and that makes the whole idea fall apart, sigh

Will — Briar Beauty; this actually started as a joke since he sleeps through classes, but then it kind of grew on me lmao. it also works in the sense that theyre both unsatisfied with the life they lived/the life they need to live. originally he was going to be alistair wonderland, since theyre both kind of just normal guys, but i feel like theres less story potentional with that idea. so im sticking with briar unless someone convinces me otherwise ;p

Few aspects of the agent’s work are made easier by operating alone, but keeping a low profile is certainly one of them. For all of Doctor Robotnik’s many, many strengths, the man isn’t always capable of being subtle. Even before he became a living god, Robotnik had had a brilliant, unerring habit of commanding every situation he entered-- and commanding the attention of everyone present along with it.

Agent Stone himself is far more visible now that he can no longer occupy the Doctor’s shadow, but without Robotnik around, no one has reason to look Stone’s way in the first place. It makes slipping through Crimson Lane unnoticed exceptionally easy. Stone’s dark suit bleeds into the shadows cast between flickering streetlamps, and the echoing jeers of unlucky gamblers mask the quiet scrape of his shoes against pavement.

So far, this whole night has been something of a disappointment. When he had heard rumors of a “less savory part of town,” he had hoped to find people of use, like corrupt lawmakers in need of overqualified ex-government agents to handle their sensitive data and assist with top-secret escape attempts. All he’s found so far, though, are the sort of petty criminals who skulk around here because they have nowhere else to go.

He’s almost ready to give up for the night and make the long trek back to his apartment when he notices someone else who seems more interested in observing the various unsavory activities on offer here than in participating in them. The young man is alone, loitering just far enough from a club exit to not be noticed by the rowdy groups passing through here and there. If Stone weren’t actively attending to his surroundings, he might have missed the figure altogether.

Interesting.

After observing the stranger for a few more minutes, Agent Stone quietly approaches from the left, politely clearing his throat to announce his presence once he’s gotten close enough.

“Hey,” he starts, taking in the young man’s sickly appearance and the still-healing bruises on his hands.

“If you’re just trying to take in the night air, this is pretty much the worst place to do it. So... what are you doing here?”

It’s a beautiful day. Barry’s on his fourth cup of coffee this afternoon. The previous night was an insomniac one, he’s got more magic than usual, and his sense of decisive inhibition isn’t at its peak. Which might be why he decides to ask a very blunt question of a very powerful psychic.

“Didn’t you say you your dad was a scientist? What happened?”

James has been setting traps around the (apparently) preferred dwelling area of one highly rare Pokemon, as advertised by Todd. This town doesn’t have much in the way of Pokemon food, so it’s hard to find anything specialized to use as bait, but he’s making do. Fire or Bug or anything between, most any Pokemon is fond of some sort of berries.

So if that strange creature is anywhere out there, it’s sure to stop for one of the piles of fruit out here... and be scooped up by the hidden net beneath.

“Ehehe...” he whispers to himself as he hides in the brush. “Ohh, rare Pokemon, come out wherever you might be! I’m told you’re a treat to hear and see.”

Todd had noticed early on that the animals of Spirale were far shyer and less approachable than most Pokemon back home. There were exceptions in both worlds, of course, like curious young fox cubs approaching for nuzzles and pets in the forest here, and grumpy Tyranitar warning him off with powerful roars back in Lental, but overall Todd had found himself struggling to truly connect with his subjects here in the same way he could at home.

He had taken it as a challenge to be met, and had thrown himself into his research in order to better understand the new breeds of wildlife and how to communicate with them. It's taken tireless effort, and he has to admit that this “petting zoo” is a... welcome break.

The creatures at this event aren’t Pokemon, but they behave more like Pokemon than many of the other animals Todd’s met so far. In addition to their friendly curiosity, there seems to be a sense of awareness of his intentions and goodwill that is wonderful to see. He wonders whether that’s unique to these types of creatures, or whether he’s finally learned enough about the fauna of the island to express himself in ways they more readily understand.

He takes picture after picture, breaking here and there to run his hands through soft fur or across glittering scales and thank his new friends with warm smiles and warmer words.

Most of the animals look as though they’d be most at home deep in the forest when they’re not out visiting people in town. Many have the sort of muted color schemes that one would see on Buneary or Shroomish-- excellent for camouflage against the twigs and debris of Radiale’s forest floors-- with breathtaking blues scattered here and there on the wings of what Todd’s friend Barry has described as “magical” beings.

Todd is sure to line up his shots so that each pattern pops against the background of the village; he’s just about finished finding the perfect angle with which to highlight the pale gray of a Noctowl-like bird’s feathers when his shot is suddenly interrupted with a flash of bright yellow that definitely does not belong to any of the visiting animals.

Wh-- hey! He recognizes that tail!

Todd lowers his camera for only a moment before lifting it again, shifting to focus more directly on the mousey shape of a Pikachu a small distance away. Is it here with a trainer, or has it come on its own to investigate the wildlife just like Todd has? ...or maybe it’s even intended to blend in with the animals, awaiting pets and adoration from the human visitors?

He observes for a few minutes, snapping another round of photos just of the Pokemon. Finally, his excitement at seeing a creature from home gets the better of him, and he waves to catch the Pokemon’s attention.

“Pikachu, over here!” Hoping for one more quick shot if it turns to face him, Todd fumbles in his bag for an apple and rolls it gently in Pikachu’s direction.

“How are you liking the event? Have you made friends with any of the animals?”

The University’s secondary robotics lab tends to be quiet, remaining mostly empty throughout much of the day. Although the facilities are open to non-students and occasionally play host to small demonstrations for the public, the lab itself is too dark, old, and out of the way to compete with its sleek new replacement near the front of the building. In Stone’s opinion, the privacy the secondary lab affords is well worth the trek; he’s never once been disturbed when working here.

Which is why he’s so surprised when he walks in one day to find the room occupied by someone other than himself. The stranger is definitely the sort of person who would stand out even in a crowded room; in the emptiness of the lab, his presence immediately commands Stone’s full attention.

“...uh, hey,” the agent says, a little too quietly, setting down a large box of parts on his own workbench. He tries not to stare, but it’s difficult to tear his eyes away; even now that he’s met nonhumans other than those little alien menaces, he has never seen anyone quite like this.

The stranger towers over Stone, and that’s the most normal thing about him. He’s non-mammalian, or at least appears that way; while he does seem to be at least partially organic, the agent’s gaze lingers on what are obviously mechanical parts poking out of the creature’s clothing. Stone doesn’t get a chance to study them too closely before he manages to find his manners and look resolutely down at his box of supplies. From what he did see, however, the craftsmanship of the mechanical joints looks like something even Robotnik himself would find interesting. And the owner of those parts had been working on them with an ease that could only have come from a mix of skill and familiarity...

Stone hasn’t been this excited since he woke up here.

“Hey,” he says again after a few moments; this time, when he turns back toward the stranger, Stone appears collected, open, and friendly, all traces of shock wiped carefully from his expression.

“It’s great to see someone else using this space.” He catches himself before he can say something clumsy like “if you need a hand--”

“If you could use any assistance, just ask. With the way my own project is going, I'd jump at the chance to focus on something else for a while.”

James is out in the woods again. He doesn’t have any real reason to be, aside from getting Carnivine some fresh air, but... it feels weird, being in one city all the time. No team, no twerp-and-Pikachu, nothing to guide where he chooses to go. Taking hikes through the forest feels a little more normal, and the terrain isn’t familiar yet, even if it’s getting easier to navigate.

It’s Carnivine who first notices another person near their improvised route, some kid out in the woods. It jumps lightly through the air and lands in front of her, greeting her with a cheery “Carnivine!” that has James trotting quickly after it.

“Hello, hello! Sorry about Carnivine, it’s just excitable.”
